Sal Stewart’s clutch home run powers Reds comeback in Seattle

The Cincinnati Reds had to come from behind twice on Wednesday in Seattle to beat the Mariners, but they did just that. The final runs of the game came on a late, go-ahead home run by Sal Stewart as he helped the team pick up a series win on the road at T-Mobile Park.

Seattle struck first in this one. Josh Naylor singled with one out in the bottom of the 2nd inning, stole second base, and then he came in to score on a single from Cal Raleigh. The score remained 1-0 until the 4th inning. That’s when JJ Bleday got Cincinnati on the board with a leadoff homer – his 17th of the season. The Reds weren’t finished there, though. Tyler Stephenson picked up a 2-out double, took third base on a wild pitch, and then scored on an infield hit by Dane Myers to put Cincinnati in the lead.

The lead was short-lived. Seattle would get the run back in the bottom of the frame after a leadoff single was followed up by a ground-rule double from Josh Naylor. That put Luke Raley in position to cash in and he came through with a clutch single to bring in two runs and put the home team back on top, 3-2.

Brady Singer locked in after that and kept Seattle off the board in both the 5th and 6th inning. In the top of the 7th the Reds put together a 1-out rally that began with a walk by Edwin Arroyo and then a single from Ke’Bryan Hayes. Elly De La Cruz flew out for the second out of the inning but Sal Stewart came through in a big way with a 2-out, 3-run home run that put Cincinnati up 5-3.

Singer returned for the bottom of the frame, but he walked Weston Wilson with two outs and that ended his day. Brock Burke entered from the bullpen and got Colt Emerson to fly out and end the inning. Burke then returned for the 8th and worked around a 1-out double by Julio Rodriguez to send the game to the 9th still up by two runs.

Looking to close things out, manager Terry Francona went to Emilio Pagan for the bottom of the 9th inning.  It wasn’t quick or easy for Pagan as he needed 20 pitches, but he did retire the side in order to seal the win on the day and the series.

Notes Worth Noting

Dane Myers and Edwin Arroyo each had two hits in the game. Arroyo also added in a walk.

Sal Stewart is 4-27 since July 12th. All four of his hits have been extra-base hits – two doubles and two home runs. He’s also driven in nine runs in that time frame.
