After a series split with the Cubs over the weekend, the Cincinnati Reds (71-68) welcome in the Seattle Mariners (77-59) to Great American Ball Park for a three game set. First pitch on this holiday is set for 4:10 pm EDT. It will be a bullpen game for the Reds. Tejay Antone will get the official start, and the recently recalled Michael Mariot will likely follow him.

The Mariners come into this series as one of the hottest teams in baseball. With 21 wins in the month of August, they put themselves back into the playoff conversation and climbed to the top of the AL West division race, where they currently lead the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros by one game.

Bryan Woo

Right-hander Bryan Woo makes the start today for the Mariners. The 23-year-old was drafted in the sixth round by Seattle in 2021 and made his MLB debut on June 3 of this year. It was a rough start for the young pitcher, giving up six runs in two innings to the Rangers, but really started to settle down and pitched decently through June and July. He went on the IL in early August for inflammation in his right forearm. Since returning to the Mariners rotation, he’s made two starts, giving up six hits and only one run while striking out eight in 10.0 innings. Those two starts were against the White Sox and the A’s.

Woo has some interesting splits. He’s a right handed pitcher, but right handed hitters actually have hit much worse off him this season. They are hitting only .154 against him and striking out at a 31 percent rate, while left-handed hitters are hitting well above .300 against him. He’s also given up seven home runs to lefties and just one to right-handed batters.

Tejay Antone

On Saturday night against the Cubs, right-hander Tejay Antone made his first appearance for the Reds since August 2021, pitching one inning out of the bullpen. He gave up one hit, but induced a ground ball for a double play and finished the inning with a strikeout. This afternoon, Antone will be the opener in a bullpen game for the Reds. This was David Bell’s reasoning for letting Antone pitch first:

In his first game back, Antone used a sinker more than his four-seamer, a shift from the last time he pitched in 2021. He has thrown the sinker while on his rehab starts the last month. On Saturday, his velocity was averaging about 95 mph with the four-seam fastball and 86 mph with his slider, both similar to 2021.

News and Notes

Roster Moves

In what is becoming a nearly everyday occurrence lately, the Reds made a couple of roster moves today. Lyon Richardson will likely be back up to start Wednesday’s game.

Bullpen Game Today

Michael Mariot will see some innings in today’s game after Antone is done. He’s a journeyman pitcher who hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2016. He has 6.93 ERA in 37.2 innings for Triple-A Lousiville in 2023. You can find his stats here.

Reds Prospect in Rare Company

Those Reds prospects just keep doing incredible things on a baseball field. This time, it’s Blake Dunn doing something that hasn’t been done often in the Reds farm system.

Geno Returns to Cincy

A familiar face returns to GABP. Good vibes only, am I right?

Update on the NL Wild Card Race

It’s tight. Go Reds.

Got to love Eugenio. Wouldn’t be surprised if he hits a few homers. Mariners are a fun team, probably the team I root for most in the AL because of the Cincinnati connection. Hope the Reds can win a game or two and get to the day off and then kind of group for the stretch run.

  2. Dennis Westrick

All is lost! All is lost! NOT! Despite the disappointing loss to the Stupid Cubs yesterday, the Reds are still in the thick of the NL Wild Card race! Following this tough 3-game series with the Mariners, the Reds last 20-game schedule is favorable!

The Reds need to keep pace with the Cubs and leapfrog the Giants, Snakes & the Fish!
That is entirely possible as all of the other 5 teams competing with the Reds for those precious 3 WC spots have tough schedules, especially the Marlins!

Let’s work some magic today and stick a trident in that team from the Left Coast!

  3. Doc

I would expect RH hitters to hit worse off a RH pitcher. The information presented in the write does not appear to show reverse splits.

  4. Indy Red Man

Leave it to the Reds to be a playoff battle and suddenly lose 3 starters and their hottest reliever. I’m ready for Group Turf Toe ILs for Fraley, Benson, CES, and Stephenson…..despite the fact that none play on turf

  5. Kevin h

If they can somehow win 2 out of 3 against Seattle that would be huge. All said and done Reds are still in hunt for last wildcard spot. Amazing considering the rough August and injuries and covid list.

    • JB

It is pretty Amazing. Just when they are written off they show up again.

  6. Doc

It’s not really a four way tie. Since the reds are 71-68 (.51079) and the other four teams are 70-67 (.51094), the Reds trail the other four teams by percentage points. All will get resolved when all have played the same number of games.

  7. Indy Red Man

The 3 late leads we blew when Ashcraft pitched since the trade deadline really factor in now. Krall picks up one solid high leverage guy and we win atleast 2 of those. There’s probably 1-2 other ones somewhere in August. I don’t see how they hang around now without that 2-3 game cushion?

  8. Tom Mitsoff

WOW — how about that inning from Antone. He was aggressive and they couldn’t hit him.

    • Kevin H

So would you be cautious with Antone or let him go for a another inning?

      I agree impressive start

      • JB

I would go another inning but man it’s a tough call.

      • Tom Mitsoff

I have no idea what his rehab plan is. I’d probably go no more than about 25 pitches.

  9. DaveCT

I saw the M’s in Seattle a short time ago. Brace yourself, they are playing really well. They’re really loose and having fun. And Julio is the real deal. Fun fact, I ran into Geno last off season in a small vacation town where I live. Great, great guy.

  10. RedsGettingBetter

This inning will give a lot of confidence to Antone… Pretty good and solid performance

  11. Mark Moore

Solid inning from Antone. Great to see that.

  12. Tom Mitsoff

Wow — very nice to see De La Cruz make solid contact on a breaking pitch on an 0-2 count. I already had that strikeout chalked up.

  13. Indy Red Man

Elly! He’s going to be fine. All the things he struggles with he’s already done. He was walking when he came up and chopping infield hits into the ground. He’ll get better

    • Tom Mitsoff

You know, don’t discount this idea. The way he looks today, why not? Give Diaz some days off to see if his arm can recover a bit.

      • Kevin H

I was gonna say something sarcastic, however valid point. At this point Antone looks sharp and fresh. Give Diaz a few days as you mentioned.

      • JB

I agree . Never a bad thing to have a couple of guys that can seal the deal

  14. old-school

Antone as an opener might have some traction the rest of the year. Perfect way to structure his appearances coming back from injury in a safe way and manage his load.

    Wow..great 2 innings.

  15. JB

Nice pick by Marte. Has played a nice 3rd in the last week.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He looks fantastic on defense, and his hitting is improving. I like what I’m seeing.

  16. Indy Red Man

Now time for the AAA dude with a 6.80 era. I can’t wait

    • Kevin H

LOL, I am laughing as I thought to self well okay here we go. lol

  17. RedsGettingBetter

I tip my hat to Antone… He is back my pals! even though he is not the same but I like him so far

  18. Mark Moore

2 innings from Antone. Couldn’t really ask for more from an opener.

  19. RedsGettingBetter

Steer taking advantage of a 93.5 MPH fast meet ball…!! Good lead of five runs to give the game to Mariot… We should cross the fingers

  20. Kevin H

Good AB by De La Cruz.. Drawing a walk..

Steer is rookie of the year in my book

  21. Old-school

I disagree with those claiming the NL central isnt any good.

Brewers and Cubs are quality teams.

Cubs shut out Frisco today. Miami plays the Dodgers starting tomorrow. This team can sneak in the last WC if they can get healthy. They are going to need Greene McLain and India and Williamson and Antone.Fraley has been a huge addition to the offense. Steer just hits.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. Brewers and Cubs have separated themselves. Milwaukee’s outstanding pitching makes them a threat in any short series. Cubs have been beating up people for the past month-plus. Reds are going to need one or two everyday players to go on very hot streaks, along with a couple of starting pitchers to have dominant months. I don’t know if they have enough healthy pitchers to make it happen. It’s going to be a very interesting challenge.

    • RedsMonk65

Agree — but not so sure we see McClain back this season, unfortunately, given the 2-3 week timeline stated the other day.

      • old-school

Im thinking 3 game wildcard series in October against the Brewers for Mclain!!!

      • RedsMonk65

So let it be written, so let it be done.

    • Kevin H

Strike 4 called a ball, and thankfully Crawford struck out.. Geesh

  22. old-school

Sam Moll a great addition by Krall at the deadline. Great inning despite the bad umpire.

  23. Indy Red Man

Moll was a nice find. Hope he sticks around for atleast a few years

    • Tom Mitsoff

They still have five years of team control over him, I believe.

  24. RedAlert

Struck the dude out 3 times then !!!
Ridiculous ump !!!!! Just horrible !!!!

  25. RedsGettingBetter

Wow, the ump looked terrible on the calls #4 and #5 … Crawford was struckout 3 times in the same AB…

  26. JB

Marte is getting comfortable. His fielding and hitting is getting there.

  27. Old-school

E-5 suarez. Is there really anyone bemoaning the loss of Suarez and Winker trade for Fraley, Williamson and Conner Phillips….Yes..Dunn injured but Reds have won that trade by a mile.

Love Geno…but hes slow and underwhelming at 3b and leads MLB in K’s with 180.

    Geno .232/.327/.382/.709.

Looks like power is dwindling now…18 HR. Far cry from 2019.

    • Kevin H

      Not Now LOL..

I was last season for sure, however it has played out nicely for the Reds.

  28. Indy Red Man

Phillips tomorrow and Richardson on Wednesday. Good experience for these young guys at a minimum

    • JB

I really like Richardson. Hopefully Phillips can throw strikes and not walk a lot of batters.

  29. JB

Solo shots don’t hurt. No walks and hopefully we can get a couple of innings out of Duarte.

  30. Kevin H

I would let Duarte pitch the 5th as well. He threw 12 pitches and the bottom of the order for Seattle is due up.

    • old-school

agree Kevin…Mariners look disinterested and just Swinging. Solo HR in GABP are just part of the deal.

  31. Indy Red Man

Renfroe $11.9 million. Love to have him as a lefty basher 4th OF/DH type, but no more then $5 mil or so. Anyone going to pay him 10+ again? He’s like a righty Jay Bruce. Very streaky. Will do nothing for 3 weeks

  32. RedsGettingBetter

The offense take advantage in the first 2 innings to score but has let Woo settles after that…

  33. Tom Mitsoff

Good time to bring in Mariot against the lower part of the batting order.

  34. old-school

Mariot got an out and didnt walk the first guy.

He did give up a bomb on hitter 2.

    Just need outs.

  35. AMDG

Wow, the Reds are running anybody with a pulse out the mound.

It’s crazy. Makes me think they are genuinely signing guys from the California Penal League.

    • Tom Mitsoff

That is literally where they are right now, with injuries and COVID.

  36. Optimist

I’m only on gamecast. Please confirm that someone is continuously up in the pen. Thx.

    • Tom Mitsoff

They did not say that on the telecast.

  37. Tom Mitsoff

Three outs, no walks, only one run. That’s about as good as you can hope for with Mariot. I’d let him start the next inning to face the number nine batter, then that’s it.

  38. old-school

    9 pitches ..1 bomb… 3 outs.

Mariners just swinging…. Reds need to play add-on and let Mariners know Solo HR’s wont win it.

  39. old-school

    9 pitches ..1 bomb… 3 outs.

Mariners just swinging…. Reds need to play add-on and let Mariners know Solo HR’s wont win it.

  40. Kevin H

Legumina had two bad outings while up and down this season. 10 appearances So I mean he maybe able to shut Mariners down a few innings as well.

  41. RedsGettingBetter

Apparently, The Mariners don’t hit singles or doubles , just home runs… I think all of them are making swings just looking for a homer trying to take advantage of the GABP

  42. LarkinPhillips

Reds better keep adding on. 5 runs will probably not win this game.

  43. Indy Red Man

Martini walked on 4, but ump ripped us off

  44. gusnwally

JB you can thank me for Stephenson getting hot. After putting up with him stinking out the joint for the entire year. I dropped him from my fantasy team 2 weeks ago.

    • VaRedsFan

      I did too…about 4 weeks ago.
I also dropped Greene….then he threw that gem.

      Coincidence??

      Should I drop Elly too?

      The answer is clear.

  45. RedsGettingBetter

This could be the more dangerous inning of the game thus far

  46. old-school

    Wow…geno K

    Who woulda thunk it?

  47. JB

Boy flirting with diaster by keeping Him in there but it worked out.

  48. Kevin H

Wow the ump isn’t having a good game. Suarez called out on strikes. Just wow

  49. Tom Mitsoff

Wow wow wow — it’s going to take some performances like that from people who you don’t expect to be able to do it for this team to hang tough.

    • Kevin H

Gameday showed strike 2 and 3 to be way outside? Was that accurate?

      • Tom Mitsoff

Strike two was a bad call by the ump, and strike three was a Geno checked swing which the umpire said he didn’t check.

      • Kevin H

        Thanks Tom,

And we will take that thank you very much LOL

  50. RedsGettingBetter

Mariot could leave unscathed….the ump helped the Reds in this AB…

  51. old-school

Senzel bat to ball on low outside pitch single to RF and Freidl bunts and mariners cant make the play….Add-on runs here and Reds win this game.

    Let’s go Spencer.

  52. LarkinPhillips

Taking Fraley out for senzel in the 6th is dumb. Fraley will most likely have had another larger at bat later in the game. If Bader got on I might have been ok with it. But the odds of a big inning with friedl facing a left after is very small regardless of senzel getting a hit. Hope I eat crow here.

  53. Indy Red Man

Senzel should be 3B vs lefties. Seattle seems strangely listless today. It happens

    • JB

Nah Marte has been been way better in the last couple of weeks. No sense in sitting him now that he is getting comfortable.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He’s seen enough of CES to know how to get him out, you’d think.

    • RedsGettingBetter

that’s why baseball is ironic sometimes

  54. Old-school

Luke Weaver v CES with the bases loaded to decide.

    you can’t make this up

  55. Indy Red Man

Weaver? I’d be booing loud as hades from the cheap seats. Better seats and I’d be throwing something. I’m a great role model for kids

  56. Tom Mitsoff

What’s been missing in the past month or longer is the key two-out hit. It’s already been missed a couple of times in this game. Let’s see if CES can make it happen.

  57. Indy Red Man

This is like having a guy steal your car then you go buy a new one and he’s the loan officer

  58. old-school

I mean Reds 2023 are way more interesting than 2022

    No one can deny that.

    • Kevin H

They keep us on our toes for sure..

  59. RedsGettingBetter

They are missing nice chances to expand the lead

  60. Old-school

Elly with the 1-4-6-3 routine out

  61. JB

Mariot gets us to the 8th it will be a huge Coup.

    • Tom Mitsoff

You’re going to get Sims for one out here (hopefully) and then the eighth.

      • JB

I tip the cap to Mariot. He has been everywhere and did a good job. Good for him. For the love of the game he keeps trying.

  62. old-school

Antone Moll Duarte and Mariot with 6 2/3 innings and 2 runs against the first place team in the Al WEst…not bad. Sims needs to end this now.

  63. VaRedsFan

Totally befuddled on 2 straight soft pitches.
Throws a fastball and give up a hit.

    Sims has to rescue this.

  64. Indy Red Man

Well when they axed Weaver they didn’t know c o vid (not capitalizing), bird flu, anthrax, small pox, and the plague were about to hit the Reds

  65. old-school

    Can someone check on Dennis???

    This is high drama .

    Holy cow…Reds need 6 outs.

  66. Tom Mitsoff

Well, they’ve retired Rodriguez twice in key run-producing situations today. Huge.

  67. RedsGettingBetter

What a dramatic K… I wonder if Alexis Díaz is available today…

  68. VaRedsFan

    Huge K by Sims!!!
He’s pretty good after a day off.

    • old-school

You got Sims Va… Can you share ahead of time???

      Asking for a nation.

  69. DW

Here goes Bell emptying his bench in the 6th freaking inning!

  70. Rick

    Runs guys.
That was coming up huge for Sims.

  71. AllTheHype

Pretty good pitching plan by Bell today. Need some innings from Mariot so hide him in the middle of the game, where he’s facing the lower part of the lineup when he comes in.

  72. Rick

Remember who’s pitching for them now guys.

  73. VaRedsFan

    Larkin with rare good insight.
Weaver doesn’t like to pitch in.
    Look middle away…eliminate inside.

  74. VaRedsFan

    TY
    As in Thank you!

    Toe tap magic

    • JB

Yep. You called the toe tap back a few games. Nice call.

  75. LT

The real Weaver is here. Man, TS been hitting the ball hard, lots of xtra bases. Great to see. We can use his bat for sure.

  76. JB

Stephenson ,the guy everyone wanted gone.

  77. Amarillo

Fun fact, we are 11-1 against the AL West with the 1 loss being Oakland.

  78. Indy Red Man

I’d move Stephenson up now, but Bell won’t. Atleast Bell isn’t a music promoter.
He’d would’ve had Led Zeppelin open for the Monkees

  79. VaRedsFan

    Assume Buck for the 8th.

    I’d let Sims continue though.

Hope to avoid using Diaz today

    • Kevin H

Sims threw 18 pitches yesterday. 11 today.

Agree hopefully they avoid Diaz today.

  80. Rick

    Glad for another run.
    Danger zone late innings now.

  81. Indy Red Man

1-2 run game and he probably rolls with Sims, but I like this because Sims is always going to throw 20+ and that rules out tomorrow and probably Wednesday too

  82. Indy Red Man

We win this and I claim the playoff lead. SF lost, Miami is off, and we have the tiebreaker on Arizona. What happens with Miami/Reds? Aren’t we 3 apiece?

  83. Tim

It’s been a great day at GABP. Really good stuff from the pen and some very nice defense from EDLC. Steer and Ty Steve having a good game

  84. Melvin

Just joining in. Looks like you guys have been doing a good job without me. 🙂

  85. Tim

The 2 waiver pickups are a great pickup

  86. Indy Red Man

Holy Moly. Miami’s next 13 are Dodgers, Philly, Milw 4, and Atlanta. Cubs play SF and Arizona so grit your teeth and root for them.

  87. Rick

Buck & duct tape today has worked thus far.
    Good to dodge Diaz today.

  88. LT

I have not seen You g pitch since he gave up a 2-run HR in AZ. Is he injured?
    C’mon Farmer.

  89. Melvin

Bader took charge there. He knows how to play.

    • Rick

Renfroe is shaky if it isn’t a routine play.

      • Indy Red Man

Step up from Myers though. Big splits vs lefties

    • Indy Red Man

Glad Steers 3 run HR went that extra foot above his glove

      • Rick

        Yes, I’m glad too.
        Agreed, Hunter’s D beats Meyers.

  90. LT

No drama free with this bullpen is there?

  91. Indy Red Man

Elly shifted over or game is over. Relying on spray charts I guess

  92. RedAlert

Gina it gives up runs every time he pitches

  93. LT

Phew. Nice W today. One game won in early Sept is one less game needed to win in late Sept.

  94. Tom Mitsoff

The home plate ump was pretty bad on balls and strikes, but he was right on the last one, despite the beef from Rodriguez.

    • Rick

The ump missed the one excellent pitch on the outer edge.

  95. LarkinPhillips

Big time win today. As a proclaimed Bell basher, credit to him for managing the pen today. The next two days will be a challenge, but getting the win today makes them much easier.

    • Rick

Me too. Nice job by Bell on the pitching.

    • Kevin H

Conner Phillips no hitter tomorrow? 😛

  96. Indy Red Man

Nice win! Renfroe atleast has a rep and will get attention. 2 hits and a walk

  97. Rick

    Well done guys!
Blood pressure will come down now!

  98. Dennis Westrick

Bell’s managing of the Bullpen Day was masterful! There, I said it!

  99. West Larry

I’ not going to comment on the pitching usage tonight. Let’s look at the positive stuff.
    1) The reds as a team only struckout once-and it wasn’t Elle. As a matter of fact he
    walked twice.
    2) The reds didn’t gave up a lot of walks, and the pitching staff had eleven strikeouts
3 ) the reds got the early lead and didn’t relinquish it.
All and all, a nice win.

  100. RedsGettingBetter

Rodriguez was K’ed twice in clutch situations… Really good job by the bullpen, and the offense responded

    • TR

Solid hitter. Imo, the Reds have their cleanup guy.

  101. Dennis Westrick

Only negatives in today’s game was the 3 for 13 with RISP and 12 LOB! Yikes!

  102. Tim

It was a very fun game. Great job with the BP by Bell. Some timely hitting and solid defense.

  103. old-school

Phillips has good stuff. Needs some command and location but promising young pitcher.
