The Cincinnati Reds have made three roster moves this afternoon ahead of their series opener on Friday night against the National League Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers. One move is one we knew was going to be happening – the team called up #6 prospect Carlos Jorge. The outfielder is taking the spot on the 28-man active roster of utility player Ivan Johnson, who was optioned to Triple-A. Jorge’s call up also required the club to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. To clear that spot the Reds moved Michael Toglia to the 60-day injured list.
Early on Thursday we started to see details that indicated that the Reds had informed Carlos Jorge that he was being called up to Cincinnati. That was later confirmed by multiple sources. The 22-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic is known for his defense and speed, but he’s also hitting .308/.376/.427 this season in 88 games played between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. The lineup is already out for tonight’s series opener and Jorge is not in it. With a lefty on the mound for Milwaukee that makes sense to let Jorge get into a game in a better situation.

Ivan Johnson is heading back to Triple-A. He’s been called up three times this season since June 30th. He didn’t get much playing time in any of his call ups, getting just six plate appearances in three weeks during his first call up, just eight plate appearances in the two weeks in his next call up, and just five in his third call up that lasted 13 days. Over all three call ups he went 1-16 with two steals, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
Michael Toglia was not with the Cincinnati Reds all that long before he injured his shoulder making a diving catch. He dislocated his shoulder and wound up undergoing season ending surgery. He had been on the 10-day injured list but with the team needing a spot on the 40-man they were able to slide him to the 60-day injured list to create that spot.
6 INF, 5 OF, 3 C, 6 SP, 8 RP seems like a good mixture of position players and pitchers.
