Andrew Abbott

It has been an up-and-down season for Abbott. The last time out was most certainly a “down” as he allowed three home runs and seven earned runs while recording just nine outs in the game that the Reds lost 17-5 to the Cubs. Earlier this season when he faced the Brewers he held them to two runs in 5.0 innings on five hits and five walks.

This season left-handed hitters have hit for a higher average and hit for more power when facing Abbott. They are not walking much at all, though. That said, since the start of May they are not hitting nearly as well as the numbers below show (.650 OPS since May 1). Right-handed hitters are showing a solid average, walking nearly as often as they strikeout, but they aren’t showing much power.

Dustin May

Acquired at the trade deadline from St. Louis, Dustin May has struggled  in two of his last three starts and the one that he didn’t struggle in he pitched to one batter before taking a line drive off of his back. But in the two starts surrounding that one he allowed 11 runs in 6.1 combined innings with five walks. On July 24th he faced the Reds while with the Cardinals and allowed one run in 6.0 innings in a game the Reds would win 4-2.

The splits against May are noticeable this year. Left-handed hitters are hitting for a high average and walking at a good rate. They are not showing much power at all against him, though. Righties hit for a lower average, rarely walks, and they don’t hit for much power when facing him.

Play good ball today guys. As much as I want to win this game, I know you have to be loose at the plate, and focused in the field. Eat ’em up, spit ’em out, and walk all over ’em !

  2. Ksdavis

Looks like AA needs to lose 10 pounds. Maybe that is why he seems to run out of steam late?

  3. Mark Moore

A little takeout BBQ tonight, Melvin.

Let’s see about righting the ship in the CC2 uniforms on ELDC bobblehead night.

Gopher ball to Contreras doesn’t help.

  4. Andrew Brewer

There goes the shut out, but just a solo shot.

  5. Mark Moore

Trevino BETTER have challenged that. Could be a long night if that’s the Chumpire’s zone. Good grief, Charlie Brown!!! 😮

  6. Mark Moore

And we waste our first opportunity. Got to know who is throwing it there.

  7. Mark Moore

Celebrate your bobblehead, Elly. Too bad nobody was on in front of you.

  8. Andrew Brewer

Too bad Hector wasn’t still on when Elly blasted that one !

  9. DWCT

Elly hits the ball awfully hard and often.

  10. Andrew Brewer

You just don’t think of Sal Stewart as a threat to steal … he’s on 2nd.

  11. Andrew Brewer

Have to settle for one in the first, we’re all tied up !

  12. Kevin H

Ya know I do wish they would replace Sadak. Here he goes again with a story about the other team. Larkin stays quite

    • VaRedsFan

      All broadcasts do that.
When the Reds are on the road, I get the home team’s broadcast.
They tell stories about Reds players.

      • Kevin H

That wasnt my experience recently listening to the Cleveland broadcast team when playing the tigers.

However, good to know Sadak isnt the only one. Lol

      • VaRedsFan

I kind of enjoy the tidbits about other players. To hear where they from, strengths and weaknesses.

  13. VaRedsFan

It’s a shame that nobody else can make plays at 3rd, except the guy that bats .150.

  14. Mark Moore

WOW!!! What a pick and throw. 😮

  15. RedsGettingBetter

Is Ke’Bryan Suarez playing at third? Nice play

  16. Andrew Brewer

Abbott ends the 2nd with a 3 pitch strikeout … After I was thinking he didn’t have a strike out pitch !

  17. DWCT

Nothing doing for the Reds in the bottom of the second.

  18. DWCT

Carlos Jorge hit the ball on the nose, but all for naught.

  19. VaRedsFan

    Good wood by Jorge…..
Bullet right at the 1st baseman though.

  20. Kevin H

That seems like a ball Mclain should of got too and Sal going to the bag. As Andrew had no chance.

    Thoughts?

    • VaRedsFan

Initially I thought that, but after watching the replay, I changed my mind. Ball only took two hops, and Sal caught it. Looked like Abbott was a tick late leaving the mound to cover….that’s all it took.

  21. RedsGettingBetter

Abbott was late and slow in that play

  22. Mark Moore

Sal!!! You can’t do that, buddy!!!

  23. Kevin H

Two bone headed plays by Stewart give the Brewers a run

    • Kevin H

Thanks VA, pay no attention to my comment

      • VaRedsFan

        No worries…I’m not necessarily correct…
        Just opinion

      • Kevin H

And I got to keep in mind ball looks slower on TV. Sal has a spilt second to make a play or let it go. Etc

  24. RedsGettingBetter

Hamilton have to be out twice but the bad defense gives the Brewers the lead …you can’t play bad against this Brewers team

  25. DWCT

Brewers don’t need any gifts. Grrr. 2-1.

  26. CincyDo

Are the Reds trying too hard when playing Milwaukee? 2 singles and a Hr and we scored 1 run. They didn’t in theory have a hit and scored 1 run. Mind boggling.

  27. doofus

Team needs to stop giving the opposition 4-5 outs per inning. They need to stop being allergic to leather.

  28. Andrew Brewer

Can’t tell what happened on Gameday, but the runner we had picked off ended up on third and scored on a ground ball. 2-1 Brewha’s middle of the 3rd.

    • VaRedsFan

Sal’s throw to 2nd sailed a little high.
MMC was shielded and couldn’t adjust to the throw.
      E-3

  29. GreatRedLegsFan

We may be looking at the 2027 OD outfield roster today.

    • VaRedsFan

I think that would be shortsighted on the Red’s part.
Bring in known talent, instead of hoping 3 guys will blossom.

  30. Andrew Brewer

Reds K twice on pitches out of the zone, nothing across in the 3rd.

  31. Roger Garrett

The Brewers play the same game night in and night out. They have a team plan at the plate and just wait till you make mistakes.Lock down pen and most of all do not fall in love with players.Sell high on players to keep the farm stocked and develop other players..Its a small market that gets it from top to bottom. So obvious where they are at and where we are at as an organization.Good model to copy in order to build a franchise with limited revenue.

    • VaRedsFan

      +1
I’d add to those facts that, the commitment to hit, bunt, move runners, and steal bases. No reliance on hitting the ball over the fence. Low strikeout rates.

    • Mark Moore

      +100,000

Exactly! Something about them just breeds consistency year after year. And they aren’t spending Cubbie or LA money to do it.

  32. SR

Why was that second run by Brewers an earned run? He should have been out, or at worst on second with a good throw..

  33. DWCT

Abbott is pitching well. How was that second run earned?

  34. RedsGettingBetter

It’s me or Abbott’s phisycal shape doesn’t look optimal for the big leagues

      • Ksdavis

He is not the only one that thinks so. I posted earlier about this. Maybe AA running out of steam rapidly in games is a conditioning issue.

  35. GreatRedLegsFan

Two straight games committing silly defensive errors, that’s why Reds can’t beat them anymore.

  36. Jason T.

Sadak mentions how fun it is to watch McLains defense. I mean, he can’t hit so I guess there’s his defense…
I can’t believe how inept he is offensively. How many more opportunities does he deserve?

    • Kevin H

About as much as you point out how “bad he is”

  37. Andrew Brewer

Abbott shuts ’em down 1-2-3 in the 4th !

  38. DWCT

It should be 2-1 Reds. But shoulda coulda woulda. Good teams don’t beat themselves .

    • Jason T.

Reds = last place team. Facts. You make a very valid point. Good teams don’t beat themselves. Unfortunately Reds aren’t a good team. A few fun players and 1 superstar in the making in Sal.

  39. Mark Moore

They keep talking rain … I’ve got LSU v. Clemson ready to go if that happens.

  40. DWCT

Bleday and Sanchez giving Reds fans some hope. And we will head into a rain delay.

  41. Mark Moore

Wonder how long we’ll delay …

    • DaveCT

In the meantime, we have a raindrop by raindrop call as if we are watching a moon launch …

  42. Andrew Brewer

1st and 3rd with 2 outs, and a Rain Delay is called.

    • Jason T.

I mean the Hamilton county tax payers already paid for GABP and Paycor. Why not spend more of their money?

  43. Mark Moore

Meanwhile Clemson v. LSU is in delay (I’m assuming lightening in the area) so we’ll move on to one of our regular shows instead.

    • Jim Walker

With the stuff that has been going on with LSU having injunctions and threats from their conference about who can and who cannot be on their roster, the delay could have little to nothing to do with the weather. 😉

  44. Jeremiah

I think kind of a down year for Abbott considering his standards, but I wouldn’t say massive disappointment. He does seem to fade a bit late in seasons. I wonder what type of career he’ll have moving forward. He’s been pretty good for the Reds, reliable, but not sure if he has the talent athleticism to improve upon his best seasons or not. But also he feels like someone that could pitch for a long time in the league even as a reliever later in his career. And pitching in a different home park, more pitcher friendly probably would help him if be leaves the Reds in the future.

    • Daytonnati

It might help if he got in better shape. He’s got a dad bod at 27. Maybe his conditioning is why he runs out of gas late in the season?

  45. Jeremiah

De La Cruz hasn’t really put it all together yet as talented as he is. If he does, I could see a Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Ohtani type of Offensive year.

2027 honestly does not look very promising to me right now as far as win total, but an MVP level year by EDC is one thing that could elevate the team beyond what it initially is looking capable of.

    • Kevin H

Yet Sal is a superstar in the making after 1 season. “Eye roll”

My goodness the expectations for Elly are never good enough. Dude is a superstar now and some are just too blind to see it.

      • Jeremiah

Kevin, I mean it mainly as a compliment for De La Cruz. Him hitting the Homer tonight and being so hot hitting recently. He’s close but not to superstar level yet.

Love Stewart, but he doesn’t have superstar talent. There’s maybe 5 players or so in the league that i think have superstar talent and Elly is right there…ohtani, judge, crow-armstrong, maybe Witt. He hasn’t quite had those elite seasons those guys have had yet, but I think he will eventually.

  46. Andrew Brewer

the games has just restarted …

    • Andrew Brewer

And Trevino singles to drive in Bleday … 2-2

  47. Jason T.

Look at Jose coming through. Nice hit Trevino.

  48. Andrew Brewer

Julian Garcia heads to the mound for the 5th …

    • Andrew Brewer

He walks one, but got his sweeper under control to come thru clean in the 5th.

  49. RedsGettingBetter

Julian Garcia has been a kind of work horse

    • Jason T.

He’s earned it too. Turned into a very quality arm.

  50. DWCT

Elly has consistently put good wood on the ball lately.

  51. Jason T.

Very nice at bat Sal. Battled pitches and drew a walk. Respect.

    • Jason T.

Not surprising though from the guy who leads the Reds in hits, homeruns and RBI’s.

  52. Andrew Brewer

Reds are threatening with 2 outs here in the 5th …

    • Andrew Brewer

Too much lefty on lefty action for Bleday, but the score is tied at 2.

  53. Jason T.

Too bad Bleday couldn’t come through. Not even contact, just a K.

  54. DWCT

They changed AA’s second run to unearned.

  55. Jason T.

Trevino with a successful ABS challenge, nice.

  56. Kevin H

Elly De La Cruz is batting 478 last 7 games and 417 last 15 games.

    Dude is simply amazing.

    • oklared

And what ~275 for year he’s good eliminate a few errors and bat 290 or higher for a year and then amazing. He has potential to do all that and more as he matures.

      • Kevin H

I stand by my opinion. Most people I know agree. He is a amazing player.

      • Brian

Before Saturday’s game where he had a home run and two hits he was the 6th most valuable position player in baseball according to Fangraphs version of WAR. I don’t quite understand how so many people in the comments section here every single day have no idea just how good he is and think that just because he could improve it means that he’s only just good. The guy is one of the best players in baseball.

  57. DWCT

Excellent inning by Tejay. Let’s get some runs.

  58. RedsGettingBetter

Antone has rebounded last two games

  59. DWCT

Now that home run is what you would call a moonshot. Wow.

    • Jason T.

Absolutely. Brewers execute at a high level with RISP.

  60. DWCT

Bases loaded one out. Time for a double play.

  61. RedAlert

    Cheapest hits ever … unbelievable

  62. Andrew Brewer

The score is tied at 3, and I have got to leave … rout the Reds home !

  63. RedAlert

get Tony out the game TITO !!! GEEZE MAN !!!

  64. Jason T.

Moll last night, Santillan tonight. Bullpen not getting it done.

  65. DWCT

Francona was playing with fire but Santillan gets the big strike out. Tie ball gate at 3.

  66. RedAlert

Thrill a minute … glad he found a way

  67. Jason T.

A Mclain hit? A home run?
    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  68. Jason T.

    Beautiful 2b hit HRod!
    Now that’s hitting.

    • Jason T.

Even out, appreciate the hustle HRod.

  69. DWCT

Goes deep 2 games in a row. Matt is on a mission.

  70. Kevin H

Gotta love new age baseball. He is safe, but he isn’t as glove is on him. As slide takes him off the bag

  71. VaRedsFan

Rodriguez is going to be out at 2nd for the 2nd time in the game.

    • Kevin H

That can’t happen. Hustle is great, however gotta play smart

  72. DWCT

Hector must not have learned about Chourio.

  73. DWCT

Could have has some insurance, but NOPE.

  74. Kevin H

Rodriguez base running blunders has cost reds a extra run. Maybe two depending on what Bleday does.

      • Kevin H

Elly followed with a homerun in first inning.

I was saying second run if Bleday got a base hit.

      • VaRedsFan

Totally different scenario with a guy on 2nd.
        One…he’s pitching from the stretch…
        Two …different pitch selection.

Once the past changes, everything else from that point forward changes.

  75. Jason T.

Another K for Bleday. No surprise there.

  76. RedsGettingBetter

McLain reaches career high 15 homers if I’m not wrong

  77. DWCT

Brock Burke has been a stud all year long.

    • Jason T.

Yes he has been. Surprised he wasn’t extended.

  78. RedsGettingBetter

To be honest , I’d like to see Burke next season with the Reds again

  79. Jason T.

Man, that was sweet. Thank you, Suarez.

  80. RedsGettingBetter

Elly Suarez! scoring from 2nd base in a wild pitch

  81. Chris

Geno a one man wrecking crew in the 8th!!!

  82. CincyDo

Nice to see Brewers give us a run. 2 run lead, is it enough?

  83. DWCT

How did Eugenio Suarez score from second on a wild pitch? Reds will take it. 5-3

    • Redlegs1869

WP went to backstop. Catcher couldn’t find it.

  84. DWCT

Cincinnati has scored in five different innings.

  85. DWCT

Christian Yelich resembles Pete Davidson to me.

  86. RedAlert

Pagan ….. NEVER EVER EASY FOR THIS DUDE , NEVER

  87. Jason T.

Pagan holds them with bases loaded. Nice Reds W.

  88. CincyDo

Finally able to beat them Brewers. Not easy by any means.

  89. Kevin H

Reds win!!! Elly continues to stay hot batting over 400. Last 15 games or so. Somehow though not many talking about that.

Pitching comes through and Reds win!!

  90. RedsGettingBetter

Can exhale! …Reds win a game with a lot of drama at the end against the Brewers…even up this series…Nice job by the bullpen as a whole depite some jams …the offense was good again tonight

  91. DW

The oh so rare and illusive win against the Brewers. Tastes sweet!
