The Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Guardians split a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday after being rained out on Monday night. Tonight they’ll get back on the field at Great American Ball Park where the winner not only takes the series, but also the fabled (I’m laughing as I type this) Ohio Cup trophy. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET this evening.

Brady Singer

Over the last two months Singer has pitched very well. In his nine starts since the start of June he’s posted a 2.92 ERA and thrown 52.1 innings with 16 walks and 52 strikeouts. In that time he’s only had one lackluster start, giving up five runs in 4.1 innings to Pittsburgh on June 28th. When he faced Cleveland back in May he was dealing with some minor injury issues and he gave up five runs in 4.0 innings to them in a 10-3 loss.

The splits against Singer are big. Right-handed hitters hit for a lower average and show solid power against him when they get hits. Left-handed hitters walk way less but they hit for a very high average and hit for a good amount of power when they get hits. Not shown in the splits is that he’s pitched much better at home (2.98 ERA vs 5.89 on the road).

Joey Cantillo

The 2026 season has been an inconsistent on for Cantillo. His ERA was sitting at 2.05 through his first 11 starts. Since then it’s 5.03 as he’s mixed in plenty of good to very good starts with multiple bad to worse starts. When the lefty faced the Reds back in the middle of May they tagged him for four runs in 5.0 innings in a Reds 7-4 win.

The platoon splits against Cantillo are noticeable, but not extreme. Right-handed hitters are a little bit better across the board but all of that “little bit” is just that they hit more singles. The spread between the average and on-base percentage and slugging is about the same for both groups, but righties just hit for an average that’s 30 points higher. Teams haven’t been sending many left-handed hitters out there to face him, though, so that’s the line for the better lefties in the league.

Another night of positive thoughts from me. Winning the series would be sweet. Hoping Singer can keep up his performance. The line up is what the line up is. I’m glad it isn’t my job to assemble it.

Let’s Crash These Guardrails One More Time!!!

  2. Dennis Westrick

The Ohio Cup Trophy? What is it? A buckeye on top of a Hudepol bottle?

  3. Dennis Westrick

    Hudepohl, forgot the “h”!

  4. Old-school

Singer has been a reasonably good starting pitcher and durable and a good Red. Reds won the India trade with KC and the Mahle trade with Minnesota for Steer. Neither of those transform the organization.

Unfortunately, Nick Krall’s professional scouting department hasnt delivered. Geno Suarez is a Reds Hall of famer and Jesse Winker made an All Star team and Sonny gray may make the Hall of Fame and Luis Castillo has been an elite pitcher for 8 years and all 4 were traded in their prime for Conner Phillips, Jake Fraley, Justin Dunn, Brandon Williamson, Chase Petty, Noelve Marte, Edwin Arroyo, Levi Stoudt, and Andrew Moore.

    Time for a new FO.

    Rebuild 3.0 since 2014.

    • CincyDo

Asking for another rebuild is very similar to asking for a call up of Hinds. What you’ll get is another strike out. Sorry Hinds I know you are not in Reds organization anymore but I’ll continue to use Uou as an example because the cry for your call up from RLN is still echoing in my ears.

      • Indy Red Man

Isn’t a new potential (likely) strikeout better then watching the same last place team strikeout again. Krall has had his chance

    • RedAlert

100 % agree …. He’s had more than enough chances …new FO badly needed and he needs to be the first one out the door ….

      • RedAlert

This was in response to what Old -school posted ….

    • Mark Moore

Replacing Krall still shackles the new FO to the same ownership. I think we all know what they are capable of doing. They’re pretty predictable.

      • old-school

Milwaukee, Cleveland and Tampa bay find a way with competent outfielders and great bullpens and elite defense and baserunning and fundamentally sound baseball. Thats not to say MLB isnt fundamentally flawed and I support a big shutdown DEC 1. Mets cant spend $350 mil and Dodgers cant sign Ohtani for $700 million and accounting allows that to be deferred to 2035-40. that has to stop.

  5. Goldenbear

When I look at the standings, you just have to admire what the Brewers do year in and year out. Even though they always flame out in the playoffs, it must be fun to be a Brewers fan every summer.

  6. CincyDo

Very important game today and it’s not because of winning the Ohio cup. Let’s go Reds.

  7. Indy Red Man

Not a Singer fan, but 3.08 in June and 2.77 in July ain’t bad. Took the Reds 5 innings so our pen can’t beat me

  8. Indy Red Man

This is it I promise….but the 2-1 was an inside breaking ball and he hammered the 3-1 heater. Either one was a great time for a hit-n-run. 1st/3rd

  9. RedAlert

3 whiffs first inning -just unbelievable and pure pitiful

  10. GPod

as usual…get them on….and then they die….all outs by SO….gives you no chance

  11. Andrew Brewer

The Cincinnati Whiffers … C’est la vie.

  12. Jeremiah

Probably the last time we’ll see Singer in a Reds uniform. He’s had some ups and downs, but that was a good trade receiving him for India.

    • Indy Red Man

I was down on India when he left, but his last year of .750 ops/.357 obp would look pretty good now.

    • Mark Moore

RoY India was a great guy. The trade was good for us (both initially). I do wonder what kind of future he’ll have at this point though. Injuries really can change career trajectory.

  13. Jeff Morris

T Stephenson strikes out too much. I know the Reds maybe looking to trade him this year at the deadline, but what team will take him?

    • Mark Moore

Several teams. He’s a competent MLB starting catcher. They are pretty rare and a few teams in the hunt are looking for one. I expect him to be gone by the deadline.

Also, yes he whiffed there, but his stats of late have been rather solid.

    • Andrew Brewer

You might be surprised, the Yankees are looking … But the Reds will be hurting.

  14. GPod

43 pitches in the 2nd inning for Singer….bullpen in the 6th most likley

  15. CincyDo

Living up to the game of 2 worst offensive teams for sure

  16. Andrew Brewer

He’s not looking sharp. Appears hesitant to put anything in the zone.

  17. Indy Red Man

Marte? They show Cantillo gives up .429 or something first 2 pitches so Marte takes heater strike 1 and ends up with another K. Kid is down 0-2 1-2 every single at-bat.
I’d play him over Friedl, but he makes it hard to justify playing every day or any day

    • old-school

Outfield beyond Bleday and Myers is a midnight graveyard. Reds admittedly dont draft outfielders. They draft infielders with good combine scores and when they cant hit or field a competent ss or 3b or 2b throw them into the OF to learn it on the fly. Krall and his scouts would not use 1st round picks to draft Jay Bruce in 2026 or for that matter Frank Robinson or Vada Pinson or Cesar Cedeno.

  18. Mark Moore

    Another “unlucky” shot by Hayes

  19. CincyDo

Man Hayes barely missed a double or Hr not by much there. Good swing,l

  20. Indy Red Man

KBH wanted a gabp special. He does hit a decent amount of balls hard, but you also have to beat spray charts by AI. Not easy

  21. Andrew Brewer

Cantillo is pitching like Singer. Rarely throws anything good to hit. Hayes proved the exception, but leaves a man at second.

  22. DW

That shows just how bad of a hitter Hayes is. The man gets a 3-0 fastball at 91.5 on the heart of the plate and watches it, which is great. Then whiffs on a fastball at 90.9 right down the tube. Then gets another fastball down the middle at 92.1 and hits a lazy fly to center. He is like having a pitcher hit. We are practically back to old NL rules of no DH with him in the lineup.

  23. RedsGettingBetter

Singer is in big trouble… he’s hanging pitches in the middle…too much pitches and the bullpen is taxed

    • Dennis Westrick

At 62 pitches thru 3 innings, Singer will probably only last 5 innings at best!

  24. Dennis Westrick

Was bored this afternoon so I watched part of the Brewers-Giants game! The Brewers hitters put the ball in play with regularity with few SOs! Reds hitters would do well to emulate that approach, especially with RISP!

    • Dennis Westrick

Giants tromped the Brewers 16-3 by the way!

  25. Andrew Brewer

Bases loaded and one out, and the Guards can’t do it … We are in this one.

    • Dennis Westrick

Lucky, lucky, lucky you were Mr.Singer!

  26. GPod

nice to face another team that can’t hit with men on base

  27. Mark Moore

OK, somebody enlighten me … what does “Against the grain” have to do with baseball? I’ve heard a certain broadcaster say it 2x now in two different situations. I know what it means in the real world (steak and woodworking) but I don’t believe I’ve heard it used before tonight.

    Asking for a friend … 😉

    • GPod

I think it means going “against the book” i think…maybe?

      • Mark Moore

Kind of joking. He’s using it as an alternate phrase for “going the other way”. I rolled my eyes at him using it the 2nd time for Arroyo’s field and throw. It’s just another quirk of him wanting to use way more words than anyone else.

    • old-school

Dont know but probably something non-conventional like pitching backwards…..throwing an offspeed pitch in a fastball count or throwing Bronson Arroyo 77 mph curve for strike 1.

      Being deliberately non-conventional.

    • Mark Moore

That was pretty sweet to watch. But defense doesn’t really matter.

      • GPod

OK….I asked for a 1-2-3 inning for Singer and got it….now, I am asking for a Reds run….lets see what happens

  28. Indy Red Man

Cam Schlitter on pace for 200 innings after 73 last year. Interesting to see what they do as opposed to Chase Burns. Thats an ace. High of 150 and averaging 120 after 4-5 years is not an ace.

  29. Andrew Brewer

Geno with a leadoff single, and Ty Steve works a walk. 2 on with no outs.

    • Andrew Brewer

Then we found ourselves in the bottom of the order … swinging at bad pitches.

  30. RedsGettingBetter

    What a walk by Stephenson

  31. DWCT

Two on, nobody out. Reds got them where they want them.

Cleveland starter is throwing a ton of pitches.

  32. Indy Red Man

Thought that was 3-0. Or atleast off the wall. Dang. Kid has plenty of bat speed

  33. JB

Marte was swinging at every first pitch and now he is taking pitches. Maybe he is starting to feel comfortable. Almost hit it out.

  34. GPod

    2 on…nobody out…don’t score…..what’s new….2 outs by SO’s….it never ends!

  35. RedAlert

First and second no outs …. FAIL
FAIL AND FAIL again …. Reds do absolutely nothing ever to try and manufacture a run …EVER ….. I mean it’s just PITIFUL …. Just a bad baseball team …. Just don’t get it …

  36. DWCT

8 Ks. 0-6 w/RISP. Same as it ever was.

  37. Indy Red Man

Has to be the worst risp team in Reds history or atleast in Gabp history. Other bad teams lost because they couldn’t pitch, but this team

  38. RedAlert

Arroyo CANNOT PLAY SECOND BASE …. ATROCIUOS ! Seen enough of this dude over there … he stinks at second !

    • Ted Alfred

Yep, I thought he was supposed to be some real Wizkid in the field. On top of that he shows absolutely zero power hitting… big disappointment

      • RedAlert

He has absolutely killed them at second base

    • oklared

Definitely not a 2nd baseman needs to play somewhere else if we feel we must play him. constantly costing pitchers easy outs

  39. Mark Moore

C’mon guys … got to be much better than that. Gonna breach my positive only promise.

  40. Indy Red Man

They have to send Arroyo down to work on 2B. This is ridiculous. How does he not beat Kwan to 2B there? He gotta go

  41. Indy Red Man

Larkin says coaching? Do they tell him to jog somewhere for a force out? You go hard

  42. Indy Red Man

I’m out. Another series loss at Gabp. Just mind bending silly high school stuff

  43. Matt McWax

I decided not to post my critique of Arroyo after his gaffe in the first inning, thought it was a good decision after his hit and sb, but now the gloves can come off, well his should. The worst defensive audition I have ever seen in 50 years of fandom.

  44. JB

Singer needed that K bad. Defense is not helping him.

  45. CincyDo

We’re absolutely terrible up the middle defensively.

  46. dimondfvr

How much longer is Tito going to leave SInger in the ballgame!!!???

  47. JB

Singer is literally trying to aim the ball.

  48. Jason T.

20th bases loaded walk. 20!!!! This team is not a good team. Striking out again at a high rate. Lack of fundamentals. Not a good look.

Edit: 21! Back to back bases loaded walks. Absolutely unbelievable!

  49. dimondfvr

Terrible defense, terrible pitching, terrible managing!

  50. RedAlert

How bout pull Arroyo while you’re at it TITO !

  51. Mark Moore

Well … I think that wraps up my night with baseball. Wheels all came off at the same time.

    Be well, RLN Friends!

    • Hanginwithem

Your efforts to remain positive are appreciated!

  52. CincyDo

Reds still have this type of inning in them. Started with Elly.

  53. Indy Red Man

1 bases loaded walk wasn’t enough for Tito. Steve Miller should be playing Gabp after the game in honor of Tito…..oooohhhh take the money and run

  54. RedsGettingBetter

Those Elly’s plays literally lost the game immediately for the Reds …Incredible …

    • Indy Red Man

      Wrath of Kevin incoming …..4-3-2-1

      lol

    • CincyDo

It’s a case of leader gives bad example. If Elly can make a bad play, so can I sort of thing for the other players

    • VaRedsFan

Physical errors happen and are part of the game.
      Elly made a physical error.
The mental error by Arroyo was unacceptable. You can’t make those.

  55. GPod

    4 runs down…..not much chance…if the reds don’t hit HR’s…reds don’t win….pretty simple

  56. Andrew Brewer

Yeah, well, Tito gets credit for at least two of those runs. Ridiculous.

  57. Dennis Westrick

Walks, as always, come back to haunt Reds pitchers!

Now down 4-0 means this old man will probably be turning in early!

Thought Singer had turned it around! Guess not! Likely to be traded and become some other team’s problem!

    • VaRedsFan

The 1st two runners allowed by poor defense.
Guards had 5 outs that inning.
Singer pitched pretty good until the last two batters.

    • Oldtimer

Singer was near 100 pitches for the last two batters. Had the Reds INF made two simple plays, he is out of the inning with shutout intact.

    • oklared

Don’t blame pitcher because the defense can’t defend same as the other night with Burns

  58. RedsGettingBetter

This Guardians team is not good but the Reds playing their worst baseball are helping it a lot…

  59. Indy Red Man

4 unearned on back to back days. Thats not good. Funny how these other teams with a bunch of young guys hustle and have their heads in the game for 9 innings…even if their record is worse then ours

  60. GPod

is it me, just seems like Elly has done nothing since all-star break

    • CincyDo

He’s actually done well offensively and made some very nice defensive plays as well. But he still makes a lot of errors or boneheaded plays. Still a work in progress. Star but not super star yet

    • VaRedsFan

      13-44
      3 HRs
You obviously haven’t been paying attention again.

  61. Dennis Westrick

To sum it up, this is just a bad team that makes too many mistakes and cannot hit with RISP!

Let the fire sale begin and the 2027 reset started!

  62. Matt McWax

Why have Ke’Bryan hit down 4 runs with Elly and Sal coming up and a right handed pitcher? Marte can play 3rd.

    • VaRedsFan

      no he can’t.
But Sal can, and move Lowe to 1st

  63. Gregmlb

When EDLC is going bad it’s bad. Basically 2 errors and hasn’t hit a ball hard all night. I’m not sure if he will ever be the player we thought he would be, at least in Cincy

      • Gregmlb

Well he definitely gets a mental error on that play. No matter what 1 out should’ve been made. Maybe you want to study the game!

      • VaRedsFan

Arroyo mental error, didn’t cover the bag.
        Are you even watching?

    • VaRedsFan

Elly is 3rd in all of MLB in hard hit%

  64. RedsGettingBetter

I don’t know but I feel like the Reds will be shutout today …Hope I am wrong…

  65. Dennis Westrick

One more thing! Some things never change with this 2026 Reds team, game in game out! Too many SOs!

Eight (8) SOs thru five innings! Absurd, ridiculous – pick one!

    • Oldtimer

Don’t be so harsh on yourself. Putting the (number) in parentheses behind the word is just grammatically wrong, not A or R. Grammar rules changed in 1980s.

  66. Jason T.

4 hits, no XBH, 8 strikeouts. Such a terrible offense. This happens way more than it should. Tough to be a Reds fan. Hitters just up there hacking. No patience. Unacceptable for professional hitters to be this bad..

    • CincyDo

No Lowe snd no Bleday. We struggle against lefties usually. Elly bats right.

  67. Dennis Westrick

Just noticed that the Cleveland relief pitcher’s name is Holderman! Great name for a relief pitcher!

  68. RedAlert

This is plain and simple just unacceptable From a professional baseball organization . Past embarrassing …. These guys just going thru motions … they do nothing about it though , nothing

  69. GPod

Larkin says: ” Jose R. shows why he is the all-star that he is” …..a bloop hit and the bad news bears/reds throw the ball all over the yard and he runs to 3rd…..I have no clue what that has to do with a player being an all-star

  70. Dennis Westrick

How many errors is the Reds defense going to make tonight? Making the Bad News Bears look like Allstars!

  71. RedsGettingBetter

Good job by Petty holding the deficit in 4 runs

  72. Noyes

The way these teams are hitting, it’s fewest errors wins.

  73. Dennis Westrick

Kudos to Petty for escaping that potential disaster created by the so-called ML players behind him!

  74. Andrew Brewer

Reds escape without damage in the 6th …

  75. VaRedsFan

    Bullpen ERA

    Guardians 6th
    Reds 24th

  76. Dennis Westrick

    Darn! There goes the shutout!

  77. Andrew Brewer

Marte comes thru with a base hit for the Reds first run. Big League pitchers play him for a rube, but he rarely goes hitless.

  78. CincyDo

Marte has 2 good swings so far. But his hitting pattern is very predictable. Swing at 1st pitch and take 2nd pitch.

    • Andrew Brewer

Smiles … Elly woul always take the first pitch and swing at the second. I used called him 0-2 de la Cruz. This year he’s doing better.

  79. Dennis Westrick

Ivan Johnson is fitting right in with the Big Club! A SO with 2 men on base, one out and, of course, a RISP!

    • Andrew Brewer

Ivan has picked up the silver sombrero award tonight, and there’s more to come.

  80. GPod

    2 on….run in….new pitcher…2 SO’s … inning over ……nothing new here

    • Dennis Westrick

The Reds are averaging nearly 2 SOs per inning! Truly remarkable!

  81. CincyDo

Man, the rooks, Johnson snd Arroyo, are eaten up by curveball

  82. RedAlert

Several of these at bats are just hideous ….cannot believe there are no better hitters in this organization than what is witnessed on this roster on a daily and nightly basis …. Reflection of this scouting department’s
    ineptitude …. It’s unbelievable

  83. RedsGettingBetter

The advantage given by the Reds to the other teams with Johnson instead of Steer is overwhelming… the 6 to 9 spots in the lineup are bad…

  84. GPod

This team just cannot string together hits to have scoring innings….It has been this way all season long….long ball or nothing basically

    • Andrew Brewer

I’ve only seen 1 or 2 rallies all year. Back to back hits are even rare. Homerun or nothin’ baseball.

  85. Dennis Westrick

And with that HR I’ve been tortured enough tonight! NCAA football starts in 4 weeks thankfully!

      • Dennis Westrick

A bar would be my first choice! But it’s late and I’m getting too old for that!

  86. RedAlert

Petty will never stick in MLB … he’s just not good enough period

    • David

He’s got a live arm, but he can’t consistently find the zone. And he’s been getting plenty of opportunities.
And Connor Hines. Maxwell, Mey and all the rest.

Where do they go from here?

  87. Andrew Brewer

Francona jumped on that one. Julian Garcia replaces Petty.

    • Andrew Brewer

But the Guards stack on 2 more in the 7th… 6-1

  88. GPod

1 walk – 13 SO’s by reds batters…..not gonna win you too many games….another reds usual stat this season

  89. Roger Garrett

Looks like 15 or more punch outs again tonight. The only way the hitting coach still has a job is that somebody believes he is right and nobody can hit.So if that’s the case why are we not selling off players now?I mean do something or at least pretend your doing something.

    • billmummer

“The only way the hitting coach still has a job is that somebody believes he is right”…
      That somebody is:
      Terry
      Jon
      Francona….who is Chris Valaika’s friend…nuff said…

  90. RedsGettingBetter

Suarez has to be leading in Ks on just 3 pitches…unbelievable…

  91. Jeremiah

Well if you’re feeling bad about the Reds, just remember Cubs fans went 108 years between World Series wins.

Times like these I remember Eric Davis and the 90s team, or one of my personal favorites, Eddie Taubensee and the 99 team that fell a little short.

  92. Noyes

We’ve got a 2016 lineup with 2006 coaches preaching a 1996 approach and they need to be 86ed.

  93. Michael B. Green

Billy Martin would not have put up with what happened in the 5th inning tonight. Of course, his temper kept him out of the HOF.

    • Oldtimer

Do you remember when Billy Martin was starting 2B for Reds in 1960? His temper got the best of him that summer also. He punched Cubs P Jim Brewer and lost a lawsuit as a result of the punch.

      • Michael B. Green

Shocker! The book on Billy Martin is a must read. I think SABR or some other mlb organization recommended it a few years ago. It’s fantastic and shocking at the same time. He’d barf at the way the game is played now. I think he has the highest winning percentage in history. His teams ran and bunt like crazy.

  94. Oldtimer

Interesting stat offered on WLW 700 tonight.

This Reds team leads the franchise in most BB with bases loaded (stats going back to 1961).

  95. Andrew Brewer

Three heaters to end it, a fitting end.

Ok Tito, put Bleday and Lowe back into the lineup tomorrow in place of Johnson and Hayes. Elly, Sal, Bleday, Geno, Lowe, Stephenson, Myers, Marte, Arroyo. Thank you Brady Singer! Wish you the best!

Maybe one of the poorest games played by the Reds this season…A step backward Could we say? or just doesn’t matter ?

Sell , sell . Sell , sell …. This is an embarrassing organization at this point run by a bunch of clueless so called baseball experts in the front office …. As long as people continue to fill seats nothing gonna change , nothing

    Laughingstock of baseball …..

17,074 is not exactly filling the seats. However, this is a surprisingly bad team, and it’s getting harder and harder to expect better outcomes for this franchise, even for the most optimistic fans.

Singer – and the Reds in general – are a true and fitting tribute to mediocrity. About 50% of the time he manages to put in a respectable performance. But it’s at a point that you just kind of expect him to give up the ghost every second or third time he’s out on the mound.

    • oklared

He is pretty good if the team plays DEFENSE.

      • oklared

Also, pretty good for a team that could consistently score 3 runs

      • lsimfred

It would be fortunate if the Reds could move on from him in a deadline trade to a contender. He’s not making the difference here.
