Jose Trevino had a big game as he homered twice and had three hits, but that was the lone bright spot for the Reds. Cincinnati only got 2.1 innings from Rhett Lowder in a disastrous start as the Colorado Rockies crushed the visiting team on Saturday afternoon to pick up their 40th win of the year.

Statcast | Box Score | Game Thread

The Reds went down in order in the top of the 1st inning. Colorado began their half of the 1st inning with a double and after just four batters it was a sign of how the day was going to go. The Rockies would score twice in the 1st inning. Rhett Lowder then gave up four runs in the 2nd. Jose Trevino would homer in the top of the 3rd to get Cincinnati on the board and cut the lead to 6-1.

Colorado would tack on two more runs in the 3rd after Lowder gave up a double and a single before being replaced with one out in the inning by Julian Garcia. He allowed a run to score on a groundout and then another one on a single as the lead ballooned to 8-1.

In the top of the 5th inning Jose Trevino came up with two outs and hit his second home run of the game – a 424-foot blast into left-center. An inning later the Rockies got that run back and then some after a walk was followed up by a 2-run home run by TJ Rumfield to make it 10-2.

Cincinnati would get a run in the 7th inning after Noelvi Marte doubled and then came around to score on a single by pinch-hitter Nathaniel Lowe. That would cut the lead to seven runs. It was as close as the game got as both teams failed to score the rest of the way as the Rockies held on for a blowout win to even up the series at one win for each squad.

Key Moment of the Game

The Rockies 4-run 2nd inning that made it 6-0.

Notes Worth Noting

Jose Trevino had one home run this season entering the day. He had only played in 25 games but that had resulted in just one ball going over the fence. He tripled his season total with his 2-homer day in Colorado. This was his first multi-homer game since May 12th of 2024 when he was with the Yankees. It was his third multi-homer game in his career.

In Rhett Lowder’s last two starts he’s given up 14 runs on 22 hits while throwing 7.1 innings. In between there he allowed one run in 7.0 innings out of the bullpen.

You could tell in the first inning it was just gonna be one of those days.

Two balls lost in the sun, Bleday just missing on a sliding catch, Trevino not doing ABS challenges on Lowder’s strikes that were being called balls.

Yeah, from the off, this one had some bad mojo about it, and it bore out.

    • Oldtimer

Yep. I heard it in the WLW 700 announcers’ voices.

  2. Melvin

Jose home run machine today. Too bad the rest of the offense was flat.

  3. Jim Walker

Does anyone else have Jose Trevino on their list of guys playing to get themselves out of Cincinnati and onto a contender at the deadline?

From the Reds’ POV, moving him would take ~$8m of sunk cost off their books (remaining 2026 salary+2027 salary+$1m buyout of the team’s 2028 option (against $6.5m salary)).

I don’t foresee the Reds moving both Stephenson and Trevino at the deadline. However, might they be willing to let TS play out the string to free agency in return for getting $8m off the books?

    • BK

I think there are relatively few Reds that aren’t available in a trade right now. I also agree that they are unlikely to trade both catchers.

      • Jim Walker

I thought it was telling that they moved Banfield to the 40-man roster in place of Higgins to ensure Banfield did not exercise his walk-away opportunity. To me, this indicated one of the MLB catchers figures to be on the move.

And who knows, with the CBA situation and the Reds fading into the sunset of the postseason chase, maybe they would move them both and go with Banfield and Higgins to close out the season if it meant taking $10m off the books (adding the ~$2m+ outstanding on TS to the ~$8m sunk on Trevino).

      • David

Banfield was moved (as Doug said at the time) because if he was not on the 40 man by a certain date, he could opt out.
I think that Banfield is fundamentally a good catcher, and he is having a decent year in AAA.
I have no idea what it would take to keep Stephenson, so it might be a choice as to which one, Stevenson or Trevino, could be trade fodder.
Duno is a high value prospect, but I don’t know how good he is , technically, as a catcher.

    • ksdavis

Good catching free agents are few and far between. Twins catcher (currently hurt) is having his best offensive year, but supposedly defense is lacking. I wonder if the feeling around Ty Steve has changed due to his excellence in challenges. I would not be opposed to another year for him.

Trevino called a terrible game today. Weren’t able to adjust pitches from Lowder to stop first pitch hitting by the Rockies.

I would move Trevino if anybody would pick him up, if if for only caash.

      • still a red

mmmm….first pitch hits were center up…don’t think Trevino told Lowder to pitch them there.

Switching Lowder back to starter vs keeping him in relief may need time to adjust. With Lodolo down though, not much choice.

Gotta be able to keep Greene and Lodolo on the field.

      • greenmtred

I saw about two minutes of the game. Were Lowder’s breaking pitches not breaking well? That’s a known effect of pitching in Colorado, and Lowder depends on those pitches.

      • 2020ball

I’m sure other teams know his ABS acumen, but I doubt anyone is fooled by it, he’s still a mediocre option defensively.

    • MFG

I would extend TS and trade Trevino. Is Lowder hurt or just not very good?

      • David

He was not sharp, would be my guess, as moderately informed fan.

Lowder has show stretches in the past when he pitched very well. I think he is a guy that just needs to work to be sharp. Or, I am totally wrong.

        One of those.

  4. Votto4life

It will be interesting to see which team ends up with the worst record in baseball. The Reds, Rockies, Royals, A’s, Angels, Giants and Mets all in contention.

    • Jim Walker

I think several of those teams will be worse than the Reds, regardless of who the Reds sell off; plus, at least a couple of them are unashamedly committed to deep selling, which I doubt the Reds will be when push comes to shove.

In addition, the Reds AAA team can still put runs on the board even without the likes of Hinds, CES, Dunn, et al. Depending on who and how deeply the Reds sell, the likes of Ivan Johnson, Hector Rodriguez, and Michael Toglia might come up and do more than the guy(s) they replaced would have done. Also, there are a couple of career 4A mashers who might come up and pull a two-month 2023 NicK Martinez routine.

      • Rob2

If the Reds sell at the deadline, it must be with an eye to improvement in 2027. Toglia, Johnson, Friedl, Benson, etc. are not improvement pieces over Lowe, Bleday, Stephenson, etc. That is just filling out a 26 man roster which we do have some experience with filling in the bullpen in May. Wouldn’t season ticket holders be entitled to a partial refund for lack of performance? Sorry. Maybe Krall forgot he demoted many of these guys (and DFAd some) earlier in the year.

      • Jim Walker

@Rob2>> I beleive unless Krall goes completely against his past deadline performance, the people coming in would likely be high ceiling current Class AA and lower guys instead of guys who would go directly onto the MLB active roster. Also, I believe one of his guiding criteria will be to avoid taking on MLB salary commitments for 2027 forward that are beyond pre-arbitration status.

      • still a red

Who’s going to trade MLB ready guys for what the Reds have to offer? Wouldn’t blame that on Krall.

      • Votto4life

StillaRed – I agree I think the best we can hope for are players years away from the majors or lottery tickets. Of course if the Reds decide to trade Hunter Greene things may be different, but I suspect the Reds are hoping Hunter can prove that he is healthy over the next couple of months before even considering moving him.

      • Rob2

So my translation to all the above is that Krall believes this team he called “playoff competitive” in the spring is now a few years away from contending and can’t be helped near term. ?? Under what other guise would you trade solid, quality players for high ceiling AA guys. That is what we did in 2022 when we unloaded Castillo, Gray, Mahle, Naquin, et al for Arroyo, Marte, CES, Steer, etc. and waited with bated breath for 2025 and beyond.

I am not debating that is what we may end up doing but I don’t see what that accomplishes. The problems – McLain, Hayes, Friedl, Benson, and maybe Marte and Arroyo remain in place – and contributors like Lowe, Stephenson, Bleday, and Singer – go to help other teams. Why on earth would you keep the problems around or invite them to spring training. You have 2 years worth of data that tells you that you made mistakes with who you asked for in return for Castillo, Gray, and Mahle. (It is too early to write Arroyo and Marte off but it is not too early to unreserve a starting spot for them in 2027.). Those are the kinds of moves that will make the 2027 offense even worse than 2026. Come on. We haven’t finished higher than 3rd place for years with this leadership and if Krall waves his magic wand in another few weeks, we won’t be any better in 2027. Isn’t there any kind of performance standard here?

In the last month or two, Singer has been the 2nd or 3rd best starter on this team. As Burns reaches his innings limit in ~5 more starts, who is going to be our starting rotation for the last 1.5 months? I am not convinced that Lodolo or Lowder will be there. Greene and Abbott and ? ? ? Won’t that be thrilling with our offense? There is one August stretch where we have 17 games in 16 days with a west coast swing in there. I mocked Krall earlier fr blaming the players. In hindsight, maybe that wasn’t the best. He won’t be able to say any longer that guys underachieved. He knows they lack talent.

    • Votto4life

Jim I agree the Reds won’t likely finish with the baseball’s worst record. But, if they do avoid finishing last, it will have to do with their remarkable start more than anything else.

  5. Mark A Verticchio

We must now just admit that this team will not make a run and may lose 90 plus games. The worst Reds year I can remember, they stink.

    • Jim Walker

Hold on, the Reds lost 100 games in 2022. 😉 This said, in terms of the actual results compared to the general pre-season expectations, I hear what you are saying.

      • Mark A Verticchio

That is exactly what I am saying especially after the 20 and 11 start.

      • Votto4life

I agree Mark. If you disregard the 20-11 start the Red’s record would stand at 24-42. .360 ball.

I think we all knew the Reds were not going to sustain their early season success due to their underlying numbers. Even then though, I didn’t think the team would be this bad.

      • Dewey Roberts

Can you imagine where we would be without Burns record of 11-1?

  6. Mark Moore

I guess that makes tomorrow the Meatloaf Game …

Hopping for 2 out of 3

      The Meatloaf game?

I’ll Do Anything For A Win (But I Won’t Do That)?

  7. sultanofswaff

You would think that on a day with bright sunshine that De la Cruz would do the obvious and take sunglasses out into the field with him, but no…. and more to the point knowing the field conditions should be part of your preparation. I’d be super ticked if I’m Lowder (even though he’s the last one who should be pointing fingers).
Pair that with last night’s error and getting picked off you really wonder where his head is at sometimes.

    • Robert Worthington

The guy is not a team player, dump him and his agent and move on,he has never respected the game from day one, team has been dismal with him,go get a leader who teammates respect,a leader, the manager doesn’t know how to lead!Never extend his contract anyway with his agent

      • Matt McWax

“Team player” is an invention of agents and mediocre talent. He’s our most productive player and biggest fan draw. Also celebrates, hugs and supports his teammates. Should we only select from the pool of players that aren’t Boras clients?

      • Kevin H

You are absolutely wrong in terms of Elly. It is okay to admit you dont like him. Yet, stop assuming you know him. I happen to know from our neighbor who is a part time grounds crew person at GABP that Elly De La Cruz is a very humble, nice person.

He has improved his game each year. Learned how to speak English.

Not sure what you what from him. He wants to play every day and hustles defensively and makes the team better.

    • Kevin H

I am more ticked that Lowder didn’t adjust or Trevino didnt try to help him adjust.

  8. sultanofswaff

The rest of the season will be telling as far as what kind of ceiling Lowder might have. As it currently stands he’s maybe a number four at best…. and thankfully that’s where he will slot if it comes together, but it would take some drastic improvement in his command to reach even that threshold.

Looking ahead, the rotation depth certainly seems lacking. It almost feels irresponsible to pitch Lodolo and Williamson anywhere besides the bullpen. Going to be a lot of pressure on Petty and Lowder in the 2nd half.

  9. RedsGettingBetter

Lowder has been disappointing as starter…I wonder whether he will stay in the rotation at least while Lodolo is out or next start will be covered by Petty …
This game was ugly…it’s hard to think this team making a run before the deadline

  10. Roger Garrett

I hoped for a clean game in all phases and that started south early and kept on going.I checked in already down 6-0 and well knew its was over even at Coors.Looked as if the Rockies knew what was coming and just ambushed Lowder from the start. It was over at 6-0 and not sure if I would have pulled Lowder at only 48 pitches. Not to punish him but to save some innings for the pen.Reds got 7 last night with 5 via the homer from the top of the order and 3 with 2 via the homer today from the bottom of the order.Maybe they play a clean game tomorrow and take the series or maybe not.Lets play it out and see what happens at the deadline, let the dust settle and look towards next year and beyond.College ball and the NFL is just a round the corner which gives hope to all fans as we move on from baseball for 2026.Its not all bad its just sooner then I would have liked but well it is what it is.GO REDS for a little while longer.

  11. VaRedsFan

CES got called up by the O’s
    Got the start at 3B.
    1-5, K

  12. Roger Garrett

Good for CES hope he sticks the rest of the way.Awesome power.

  13. Votto4life

At this point I am not sure I will purchase the Reds TV package in 2027.

I have followed the Reds my entire life, but I just don’t enjoy it anymore. Part of it is the losing, part of it is the disparity between the haves and have nots and part of it is the game itself. Too little offense, too little strategy.

Maybe (more like probably) I am just an old man shouting at the clouds, but I miss the game I grew up with. I don’t like the Designates Hitter, I don’t like inter-league play, I don’t like ghost runners. All the things I told myself I would get used to but haven’t.

Of course, having a competitive Reds team to root for would probably change my tune. But, I honestly don’t see that happening anytime soon.

    • RedsFanForLife

Quality of life is the most important thing. If you think it’s better, don’t purchase at the beginning of the season, maybe listen on the radio. As the season goes on, if you miss watching, you can always purchase after the season starts. They lower the price at different points in the season.

  14. RedsFanForLife

    Post trade deadline lineup
Dunn, Elly, Sal(3B), Bleday(DH), Steer(1B), HRod(LF), Marte(RF), Trevino, Arroyo. Bench of Banfield, Hayes, Friedl, Myers If MM ready off the IL, Friedl down to Louisville and MM off the bench.

  15. Gpod

I really believe the MLB pkg is a great deal because you get to watch all the games & breaking down the cost per game is really a bargain….the problem I also have is when your team stinks, it’s no fun…brought the whole family to Seattle to watch the reds in the upcoming series….little did I know we would basically just be watching them play out the string with no real meaning for the rest of the season…so sad considering what I thought this season was gonna be

  16. TR

A good game is needed from HG and a series win plus some scoring from the Reds offensive core. I’d like to see Lowe in the lineup, if possible. Then off to T-Mobile for three in Seattle.

  17. Kevin H

I see the reds are saying they are “open for business” well if you trade 3 bullpen pieces and a starting pitcher then be prepared for a even longer rest of the season. As I have no faith this organization will bring back players that will help in 2027. I can see Lowe, and Suarez being traded and maybe Stephenson. Anything else to me makes little since. Especially when reds triple A pitchers they depended on didnt do anything as well as the triple A starters. Lowder has struggled as has Petty in terms of starting.

Oh well, football season is starting soon.

  18. RedsFanForLife

Now that it has been decided, there are 2 ways to go about lineups until the deadline. Showcase all the players that are planning on being traded or play them periodically over the next 2 weeks to avoid them possibly getting injured. I say play them. Lowe, Geno and Stephenson should be in the lineup as much as possible until the deadline. Who knows, now that it’s known we are sellers, teams might try to pivot and make trades earlier. They will try to move all the players with expiring contracts, but I think they should also listen on Pagan, Steer and Bleday. I’m in favor of keeping Steer and Bleday, but if the FO gets offers they can’t refuse, we might see them leave also. Pretty excited to see the players we get back. The FO has a chance to get players that should help the Reds, Bats and Lookouts the rest of this season and beyond.

  19. LouieDLefty

I would think Stephenson would draw a lot of interest. So much so that the Reds may want to extend him as long as he does not want too much money.

    • Jim Walker

Stephenson will be 30 years old by the end of the 2026 season, likely making the coming off-season his only shot at a big, life-setting contract. On the Reds side, Alfredo Duno looks to be only 2-3 years away from MLB. Thus, the term could be as much or more of an issue with Stephenson for the Reds as the money.

    • Rob2

I think Tyler is fine offensively but a pretty big minus defensively (throwing primarily). Maybe near the bottom of the league in CS%. I am hopeful overall improvement here (and CF) would be a big objective for the Reds. A 250 hitting C with plus D and a 2-3 year contract should be out there. Probably cost more than Stephenson but not a fortune.

      • greenmtred

Is it TS’s throwing or is it the Reds’ pitchers’ lack of interest in holding runners on? Jim makes an excellent point, and it may be entirely unreasonable for the Reds to extend TS, but he will not be easy to replace.
