The Cincinnati Reds will take the field this afternoon at American Family Field looking to avoid being swept in the 4-game series against Milwaukee. They have not won a single game this year against the Brewers and are hoping that all of that changes today. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10pm ET.

Chase Burns

This season has seen Burns dominate when he’s been on the mound. Only twice this season has he allowed more than two runs in any of his 16 starts. The last time out, though, was one of those times as the Pirates scored five runs in six innings against him despite Burns striking out a season high 10 batters in the game.

The splits this season against Burns are big. He’s been dominant against righties who are hitting for no average, not walking at all, and they aren’t hitting for any power. Left-handed hitters aren’t hitting for much average, but they are walking at a solid rate and when they do find the occasional hit they are hitting for some power.

Jacob Misiorowski

There aren’t many guys who have pitched better than Chase Burns this season, but Misiorowski is on that list. He leads the league with a 1.45 ERA and his 146 strikeouts are also atop the list. He’s made 16 starts this season and has allowed three earned runs or fewer in all of them. In 14 of the 16 he’s allowed two or fewer runs. In his last 10 starts he’s allowed four total earned runs.

The splits against Misiorowski are big, but neither group of hitters is finding anything remotely close to success. Left-handed hitters are hitting .107 against him with no power at all. Right-handed hitters are hitting .183 against him with no power at all. Both groups are also striking out a ton.

I know Steer’s bat has gone cold, but it seems like every other game he is not in the lineup.

  2. Dennis Westrick

It’s a good news bad news day for the Reds! The good news is that this 4-game series with the Brewers ends today! Only 7 more games (opportunities) to lose to the Brewers! The bad news is that the Reds are facing the Brewer’s best pitcher who throws 105mph and strikes out a lot of batters! My guess is that the Reds will total 15 SOs this afternoon!

Hope Chase Burns can match Jacob Misiorowski and keep it a low-scoring affair!

Only seven (7) games below .500! No where to go but up!

Only seven (7) games below .500! No where to go but up!

      Not true.

Still plenty of room to fall further down.

    • Oldtimer

Reds lead 7-2 in 8th. I prefer high scoring by the Reds.

  3. steve

only chance today is shorten up swings, if we swing harder, the ball will be in the catchers mitt!

  4. Robert Worthington

Amazing!Guys making millions of dollars and can’t figure out how to run the bases, well today Friedl? He should really be shagging balls in Dayton, unbelievable how bad this team really is.

    • Doug Gray

Half of the 10 players in today’s lineup for the Reds are not making a million dollars (from the Reds) this year.

    • Oldtimer

Friedl hit HR so he could job around the bases.

  5. LDS

Well apparently Stewart doesn’t care who is pitching.

    • The Duke

Safe to say that Sal does not struggle with velo

  6. JB

Not sure how Trevino can make a proper throw to 2nd when Turangs bat is in his way. He should have been arguing that.

    • The Duke

It was on his backswing and was immediately pulled away, there is 0% chance of winning that argument

  7. Roger Garrett

Reds have two hitters that have put the ball in play so far with 5 strikeouts in two innings . Sal homers and that will be all but 102 going the other way was awesome

  8. Dennis Westrick

Reds may set a team record for SOs in a 9-inning game today! Five SOs thru the first 2 innings! Extrapolating thru 9 innings would be 18 SOs! Yikes!

    • Oldtimer

Quoting Spiro Agnew, nattering nabobs of negativism. Reds 5, Brewers 0 so far.

      • RedsMonk65

        Clever game-thread comment. Hours later.

  9. dimondfvr

Nice to see that the Brewers also have brain freeze! 🙂

  10. WCRon

Is Trevino playing because it is a quick turnaround. He seems to be playing every time I watch

    • WCRon

I take that back. Maybe he should play every day.

    • Oldtimer

I love to see these comments. Trevino has two hits and 3 run HR today.

  11. JB

1st and 3rd and no outs. Let’s see if they can get one home.

      • Kevin H

I know its 2 runs against a great pitcher. Yet, this is why this team frustrates me. They are battling against this dude.

      • JB

I know. Then a homer. Just don’t get this team.

      • The Duke

We’ll battle against Miz and Skenes and then get blanked by opposing teams #5 pitcher with a 5+ ERA

      • David

        @ Duke

To be honest, Skenes has not been that great this year. Not throwing as hard, etc. Not that surprised the Reds finally beat him last Friday.

I have no explanation for the Reds today, except (drum roll) they were due, statistically. Doesn’t make logical sense, but it makes a kind of baseball sense.
Burns was not that sharp last time out, but today he is smokin’!

    • JB

Temper your excitement. The bullpen could still blow this game. Unless Burns completes it. 🙂

  12. Chris

Wow. Just checked score at work. Didn’t exactly expect this!!!

  13. RedsGettingBetter

Well, Reds are skyrocketing the Misio’s ERA at least… Let¿s see Burns how can handle this lead

    • The Duke

Only 1 run is earned, so not really

  14. Roger Garrett

Now who expected that?If you did please rush out and buy lottery tickets and get me some. Please let me know.

  15. Noyes

Don’t know why Misiorowski is throwing any cutters at all against this team, but I’m not complaining. Nice rip Jose.

  16. MK

Official scorer working to keep Misorwski’s ERA low by calling Bledsy’s hit an error. No wonder he might lead league in ERA. Maybe he previously worked for Cubs when Sandberg never got a error in Wrigley. 4of 5 unearned at this point.

    • Doug Gray

Prior to today he had been charged with three unearned runs. They came in road games. There’s certainly some home cooking on the play today. Even if all four of those runs were earned he would still have a lead in ERA by 0.18 as of my typing of this reply.

    • The Duke

I still think he is going to throw his arm out sooner rather than later

  17. Roger Garrett

Well here we go.Gives up a single on an 0-2 pitch then a double.Burns will learn but boy we have seen this movie.Got to bare down now.

  18. Jeremiah

How about the Reds hitters scoring off of Jacob M.? Have to give them credit today.
I like Trevino, if he can stay healthy, he can be a decent veteran backup Catcher. I wonder if a team would be interested in him at the deadline as a backup should the Reds be sellers?

I’d like to see Burns go 7-8 innings, even if he lets up 3-4 runs. Not sure what his pitch limit is, if 110 pitches or so? I miss the days of the starting pitchers going at least 6 innings most games.

  19. Jeremiah

Reds can’t hardly beat anyone in the Central, but they are on the verge of beating Skenes and Misiorowski in the same week. Doesn’t make too much sense!

    • Oldtimer

That must mean they can beat them. Can’t Hardly = Can.

      • Jeremiah

Yeah my grammar is lacking a little there.

      • Oldtimer

So’s mine. English grammar “ain’t” that easy.

  20. Roger Garrett

Great job Burns and thanks Brewers for the out trying to get to third

  21. Jeremiah

There you go Friedl! I feel like Friedl may have some hitting ability still left. I’m concerned age and health are catching up to him as most are, but hopeful he can maybe at least get back to a league average batting average.

  22. dimondfvr

What just happened!!? LOL, way to go TJ!

  23. Richard Fitch

… and TJ Friedl says, “I’m not done just yet.”

  24. Roger Garrett

Did anybody have Trevino and now Friedl going deep today?WOW

    • JB

Can you imagine what the betting odds for both of them to hit home runs?

      • Oldtimer

Or that you can actually bet on that at (or near) the ballpark.

  25. Jeremiah

Reds saving their season according to my personal metric that they had to go at least 3-7 on this road trip to hold out slim hopes of turning it around.

  26. Austin

I’ve come to like John Sadak, but my biggest pet peeve about him now is that he consistently talks about “slam range,” which is an old Dusty Baker-ism. Slam range is not a thing!

  27. RedsGettingBetter

Friedl goes deep…Incredible… The Milwaukee pitching coach is removing Anderson from the mound, not Pat Murphy…Uumm how can it be understood?

    • JB

Murphy had back surgery and the pitching coach has been going to the mound for about 3 weeks while Murphy recuperates.

    • dimondfvr

Murphy had major back surgery within the last week. He was back in the dugout the next day! But the pitching coach has been making the walk to call in new pitchers from the bullpen.

  28. RedAlert

Nice job Burns ! This guy is a bulldog !

  29. Roger Garrett

I won’t touch that one.Just happy for Friedl. He put a legit swing on 92.

  30. Jeremiah

Reds best hope I think is taking this game, taking 2 of three vs. Orioles, then 3-3 vs. Phillies, Cubs before the All Star break…45-50 at the break, then hope for the best after the All Star break with Greene, De La Cruz rested, Stewart 2nd half surge.

  31. Jeremiah

How many innings can Burns pitch this year? Would be fun to see him in the Cy Young conversation. I hope he stays healthy. In a potentially down year, I still enjoy the stats of individual players, would be neat to see him go like 17-3, etc., that would feel like a Randy Johnson type of year.

    • The Duke

If Burns finishes top 3 for Cy Young, the Reds would get another Comp A draft pick. Another one as well if Sal wins Rookie of the Year. And next year they already get a Comp A for market size competitive balance since they had a Comp B last year. They could potentially have 4 top 50 picks next year in what is considered possibly the strongest draft of the decade in 2027. Maybe even 5 if this season tanks and they pick at the top of round 2.

  32. RedAlert

Moll is a thrill a minute – geeze man

    • Dennis Westrick

The late Earl Weaver would have gone thru half a carton of cigarettes if he had Moll on his Baltimore teams and he was on the mound in relief!

  33. Roger Garrett

Our old friend Kuhnel is in to pitch. He struggles to throw strikes and we struggle to make contact.Who wins this battle.

  34. Matt McWax

Hat tip to Ortiz, crazy good play.

  35. Roger Garrett

If Nuxhall was still around he has Trevino on as star of the game.Memories from long long ago.Got to go take a nap now.GO REDS

    • RedAlert

The ole left hander rounding third and heading for home …. The best ! Miss listening to Marty and him – they were awesome
      together !

      • Dennis Westrick

Best MLB announcers on the radio in their day!

    • Dennis Schiavone

Does anybody remember the pregame show Dougout Dope. Didn’t Hamilton Joe handle that one
      .

      • Dennis Schiavone

        Misspelled dugout dope I think

  36. JB

What ever Trevino and Friedl ate for breakfast needs to be repeated every morning.

    • Oldtimer

Number 8 and 9 hitters have 5 hits (including 2 HR) and 5 RBI.

  37. RedAlert

Glad for Friedl … I’ve knocked him hard on here ..would love for him to find his bat again… could really help

  38. RedsGettingBetter

Wow Elly smashed that ball but Frelick caught it in a nice play…

  39. Dennis Westrick

Well, well, well! The Reds can beat the Brewers! Great job by Burns, again! And outstanding job by the Reds bullpen for a change!

Let this be the start of a long winning streak!

    • 70times7

Marte hitting a lot of balls hard, and not striking out much. I’ll take it.

  40. RedsGettingBetter

Reds Won 1 game against the Brewers… Burns was solid to improve to 10-1 and his ERA is 2.40… The Reds bullpen didn’t allow a run

    • Dennis Westrick

Reds BP also did not give up any hits! Truly remarkable for that bunch!
