The Cincinnati Reds opened up the series on Monday night with a bang. And then a few more. The Reds pummeled the Mets 12-0 in the first game as they hit three home runs and got strong pitching throughout the night. This evening Cincinnati will look to make it two in a row over New York. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET.

Brady Singer

Early in the season things were up-and-down for Singer, but May was simply just downs. The first start of June didn’t go well, either. But the last time out here came through with a 6-inning, 2-run outing that featured just one walk.

The splits this season for Singer are big. The bad news is that he hasn’t been successful against any group of hitters, it’s just that left-handed hitters have been a lot better. They are hitting for an incredibly high average and for a ton of power. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a solid average and like lefties are hitting for a whole bunch of power.

Kodai Senga

The season started out well for Senga after he allowed two runs in each of his first two starts, covering 11.2 innings. But then things fell apart and he allowed 16 earned runs over three starts that covered just  8.1 innings before he landed on the injured list with a back injury. He’s made four rehab starts in the minor leagues since late May, with his last coming in Double-A where he allowed one run (on a homer) in 6.0 innings.

The splits are still in small sample size mode, and they likely feature some data from when he was pitching injured. Still, the splits have been big. Right-handed hitters have been good across the board against him. Left-handed hitters, though, have been incredible across the board against him so far this season.

Elly De La Cruz headed to Georgia!

When it was announced that De La Cruz would go on a rehab assignment this weekend it was not announced where that would be as all four of the Reds farm teams that are full-season league teams are on the road. This afternoon manager Terry Francona told the media before the game that it would be with Louisville in Gwinnett and he would play five innings on Friday, serve as the designated hitter on Saturday, and then play shortstop on Sunday.

Where is Marte, if he is here please play him.

    • Redwave

He is on the back field practicing fly ball routes

    • Andrew Brewer

Bleday, Dunn, and Steer are in the outfield today. McLain at short, and Arroyo at second. When Elly returns, who gets sent down ? Sometimes hard decisions have to be made. Marte is not going to be a full time starter in the outfield, but he is getting good playing time.

      • David

Will Benson goes down, or DFA’d. Whatever.

      • GreatRedLegsFan

I wonder what’s the plan for Arroyo.

  2. Dennis Westrick

No Marte in tonight’s lineup? No Bueno!

  3. RedsGettingBetter

Senga has been awful since last year but I think he has pitched well against the Reds through his career…Mets shows a heavy lefty lineup as usual the teams do against Singer…The Reds need to win many games in a row …We’ll see

  4. Mark Moore

Let’s just Kick Some Metro Butt and not worry about the line-up construction. Just hit, baby, hit.

    • DW

Yeah, yesterday I was wondering why Lowe wasn’t in the lineup after his 2 for 2 with two walks performance in the Dbacks finale. Things worked out okay.

  5. Dennis Westrick

“Your mission Mr. Singer, should you decide to accept it, is to pitch at least 5 innings with 2 or fewer runs allowed1”

  6. Jason T.

Come on Singer. We need you to give us a quality start. Reds need to heat up. Hopefully last night was a precursor of what’s to come.

  7. Indy Red Man

Singer 93 and pounding Bichette inside. Where has this been all year?

    • Dennis Westrick

      Saw that too! He’s pumped!

  8. Andrew Brewer

Mano – Man O , Stewart comes thru in the clutch … Couldn’t have scripted it any better !

    • Mark Moore

      He’s 2 for his last 30 … both of them HR’s

  9. Dennis Westrick

Keep it going guys! Hope they run out of fireworks!

  10. CincyDo

It takes the Mets pitching staff for Steer to end 1-30 skid, right? What a way to end it though

  11. Andrew Brewer

Six fast balls in a row to Spencer and that was one too many ! It’s outa here ! 4-0

The Reds come out with big damage in the first !

  12. Richard Fitch

All that’s missing now is the spaghetti

  13. RedsGettingBetter

Nice job by the Reds offense…Singer needs enough run support …. Senga threw 36 pitches in the 1st inning

  14. Mark Moore

Run up the pitch count and the score. I like that action.

  15. RedlegScott

A win for Singer would be outstanding. Just what the doctor ordered.

    • Andrew Brewer

They lost the first one, and now they’re afraid to.

      • Andrew Brewer

And that should do it for the Mets challenges … lose two and you’re done.

    • Mark Moore

He forgot they only had one to burn. And it burned him.

  16. Andrew Brewer

Brady Singer looking like somebody else today !

  17. David

Based on his last start, Brady Singer might actually be physically ok. I think he has been pitching through some nagging problems, but he’s a pro and doesn’t complain.

Maybe he pitches really well the rest of the season.

Andrew Abbott was lousy the first month, then finally got straightened out. Nothing wrong, just using the wrong pitch combinations……so they say.

    • greenmtred

Brantley said, awhile ago, that Abbott had changed his arm angle.

  18. CincyDo

Today we get to make jokes at some other teams. What does it take for Singer to have 3 strike outs through 3 innings? The Mets.

  19. Mark Moore

Let him off the hook a bit that inning.

Keep it up, Brady. Nice and easy.

  20. Dennis Westrick

Stay on target, Mr. Singer! Stay on target!

  21. Andrew Brewer

Singer not going to let Soto tie it up. Bases loaded now though…

    • Andrew Brewer

And gets Young to fly out to short … Mets get 1 in the third. 4-1

  22. JB

Hate to break it to you Soto but you are out of timeouts and your lucky because it was a strike

  23. Dennis Westrick

Singer is not helping himself with a HBP to start the inning and a walk to load the bases! Danger Will Robinson! Danger!

  24. RedAlert

Need a 10 run lead with Singer on mound … loses focus faster than any other pitcher on Reds staff

    • Dennis Westrick

Agree! Just don’t get it with Singer’s lack of focus at times!

  25. Mark A Verticchio

    Red’s need more runs tonight.

  26. Mark Moore

That’s the way out of a jam.

Let’s get that one back plus a couple more. I’m feeling greedy again tonight.

  27. RedsGettingBetter

Singer could limit the damage but a 3-run lead looks short with him on the mound…

  28. Dennis Westrick

Singer’s struggles in the top of the 3rd inning increased his pitch count to 50! Looking at another 5-inning outing by a Reds SP!

  29. Dennis Westrick

Singer, what are you doing Dude? You have a 3-run lead, and you walk the leadoff hitter?

    • Oldtimer

For the RLN commenters who may not know everything, Cowboy said on WLW 700 that Singer is sweating heavily and having a hard time gripping the baseball. I texted Cowboy and told him I would pass that along to RLN commenters who need to know.

  30. Dennis Westrick

Singer is his own worst enemy! 3 walks and 2 HBPs

    • Mark A Verticchio

Not a recipe for success. The most innings he is going to is 5, if that.

  31. WCRon

He’s ahead of the hitter and then goes awol. Hard to fathom
Got a bad feeling about this one

  32. Andrew Brewer

That walk to Alvarez hurt … can he get out of another jam in the 4th ?

Yes ! His life is charmed today …

  33. RedsGettingBetter

Singer has struggled last two innings fortunately hr gave up only 1 run but he has played with fire…he’s past 80 pitches in just 4 ip

    • Oldtimer

Struggling with gripping the ball. Sweating heavily, says Cowboy on WLW 700.

  34. Roger Garrett

His stuff isn’t good enough at 90/91.He had to nibble and pays for it

  35. Mark Moore

We’ve settled into a rather unexciting game. No great pitching to speak of. Hitting went quiet. Nothing much in the way of spectacular defense.

I’m in danger of nodding off.

  36. Roger Garrett

Reds need to run cause they only have 2 hits and both went out.Put it in play and run

  37. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds just depend way too much on the home run, just look at their averages.

  38. Mark Moore

Thanks OT for repeating Cowboy’s observations. Helps make a little bit of sense out of what we’re seeing from Singer as the game progresses. I heard him say it as well but it really didn’t register until your comments.

    • Mark Moore

So you could say he’s dealing with Schweddy balls (apologies to Doug if you have to zap that one) 😮

  39. RedsGettingBetter

It’s incredible Senga is still on the mound. The Reds offense couldn’t have knocked him out in the first two innings because they weren’t patient in the 2nd inning

    • Oldtimer

He started throwing faster after first inning. Not sure why. Low 90s in first. Mid to upper 90s after that.

  40. Andrew Brewer

Four runs is not enough, and here come the Mets …

    • Andrew Brewer

Only to ground out into a GIDP … Singer good thru 5.

  41. Dennis Westrick

Truly frustrating this team is! The score 4 runs in the first inning on 2 HRs and then not a single hit since! Plus, they are back in the SO mode with 5 SOs in 4 innings against a Mets pitcher with an ERA of 9.00!

    • Oldtimer

Cowboy said the Mets P starte throwing 5 mph faster after first inning. Not sure why.

  42. Chris

Singer hanging tough out there on the mound.

  43. WCRon

That DP helped. Maybe we can get one more from him and limit our BP exposure

  44. RedsGettingBetter

Another outing by a Reds starter with only 5 ip and at least 90 pitches

  45. Dennis Westrick

To Singer’s credit he did make it thru 5 innings while yielding only one run!

  46. Mark Moore

First XBH for Arroyo … congratulations, young man.

  47. Mark Moore

    Another Sac Bunt Single!!!

    Now swipe 2nd.

  48. Chris

Good bunt again by Dunn both runners safe let’s score here!!!

  49. Mark Moore

Sadly, Bleday would have walked had he challenged earlier.

  50. Andrew Brewer

But Sal comes thru again with the clutch hit ! 5-1

  51. Dennis Westrick

So, do we get the good Moll or bad Moll tonight?

    • WCRon

Why can’t singer go one more. Asking for a friend

      • Oldtimer

Struggled to grip the ball due to sweating. So said Cowboy on WLW 700.

  52. RedsGettingBetter

Geno is back to his duties with 3Ks on 3ABs after hitting two dingers and batted in 6 runs yesterday

  53. Mark Moore

I was thinking Myers to CF, Dunn to RF, Steer to 1B … but I forgot Lowe was the DH tonight.

  54. Andrew Brewer

Vientos not fooled by the changeup on a 3-2 count … now 5-3 reds

  55. RedsGettingBetter

The bullpen is starting bad its job ..Moll has allowed homers recently

    • LarkinPhillips

He is being overused. He is not a guy who should be top 3 in appearances.

    • Oldtimer

Mets LH Perez was throwing 97 mph. Moll is throwing 90 mph. Makes a difference.

  56. Dennis Westrick

Moll was one pitch from getting out of the inning! But no! Served up a big fat meatball to Vientos! And then follows that with a 2-out walk to Alvarez!

Anybody else out there in RLN land confident the Reds bullpen can protect what is now a 2-run lead?

    • Don A

Of course we are confident! LOL Moll lucky they are out of challenges. Those were not strikes…

    • RedlegScott

      I’m 50% confident. How’s that?

  57. WCRon

I must have missed it. Did the Mets use up all their challenges

  58. LarkinPhillips

It’s incredible how often Sadak talks and Larkin just doesn’t respond at all. Those two have no chemistry and it makes Sadak worse. When cowboy or Sam are with Sadak he seems a lot easier to tolerate to me than with Larkin. I hope this is the last year of Larkin in the booth.

  59. Mark A Verticchio

Same old story, the offense needs to score some runs or this could be a loss. The issue is the starters need to go more than 5 with this bad of a bull pen.

    • VaRedsFan

They have 5 runs in 5 innings.

That would average out to what??? 1 run per inning.

Where do you get you material from?

  60. RedsGettingBetter

It’s necessary to score more runs…the bullpen is unreliable

    • Dennis Westrick

Hard to score runs when Reds “hitters” have 8 strikeouts thru 6 innings! Either HR or bust it seems!

  61. Roger Garrett

Either our pen can’t throw strikes or they’re afraid to throw strikes. It has to stop.

  62. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds hitters are so hot and cold, good one day and look awful the next.

  63. Mark Moore

What is up with us not challenging any of these calls tonight????

  64. RedsGettingBetter

McLain is in one of those ugly days …

  65. Roger Garrett

MMC no contact last two at bats. How long?

    • Dennis Westrick

When Elly comes back move Arroyo to 2nd and ship MMC back to Indianapolis!

      • Mark Moore

Only AAA hasn’t been in Indy forever. Playing there he’d be a Pie-Rat.

  66. Dennis Westrick

Burke gets a big 2nd out by Soto then gives up a 2-out single! Maddening!

    • RedlegScott

Pitchers give up hits now and then, Dennis.

      • Dennis Westrick

I know! But was relieved he got Soto and got thru the inning on only 5 pitches! Let’s see if Tito sends him back out for the 7th inning!

  67. RedlegScott

    That’s getting it done, Burke.

  68. Mark A Verticchio

I am not thinking the Reds will score again, hope I am wrong.

  69. RedsGettingBetter

    Come on , Semien was K’d , Steve didn’t challenge 6th pitch…he wound up walking …yikes

  70. Mark A Verticchio

Antone is not a high leverage pitcher.

  71. Chris

Wow just wow .. more walks go ahead run at the plate

  72. RedsGettingBetter

8th and 9th inning have been a nightmare

  73. RedAlert

    That’s ridiculous Antone ! Inexcusable

  74. RedlegScott

This is where I say if you walk the first two batters, you’re out of the game.

    • Dennis Westrick

Should be automatic! The bigger question is why not Burke for another inning? He only threw 5 pitches in the 7th!

  75. Mark A Verticchio

Maxwell up while Petty was wasted last night.

  76. Dennis Westrick

I am eating unsalted soda crackers and washing them down with Pepto Bismol watching Antone trying to give away another game!

      • Dennis Westrick

You think I’m kidding! The only thing missing is I haven’t added any vodka to the Pepto Bismol! Waiting for the 9th inning to do that!

  77. Mark A Verticchio

Now Santillan in the 9th, Reds need to score.

  78. Mark Moore

Now we REALLY need a run or six.

I’m guessing we get Tiger in the 9th now and Big Sugar sits back down.

  79. RedAlert

Nice escape ! Made it hard on himself !

  80. JB

People on here wanting McLain sent to AAA. McLain going into tonight was hitting
270/.413/.595/ 1.008 in 46 at bats since Elly went on IL.

    • Kevin H

They don’t look at stats. Their comments show.

    • Mark Moore

      +10,000

But easy on the facts, will you JB?

    • Dennis Schiavone

Thanks JB for accurate information concerning MM instead of some emotional feelings about sending him to AAA

  81. RedsGettingBetter

Antone could put the 0 somehow

  82. Kevin H

Saw a comment about Burke must be tired. He pitched lastnight as well.

    • Dennis Westrick

Makes sense! Based upon recent performances by the Reds BP pitchers it looks like Chase Petty may be the new closer! Unfortunately, he can’t pitch every game!

  83. Roger Garrett

Second guessing the pen is useless. You could argue non of these guys are more then 6th inning guys behind or ahead.I don’t get too upset about it except the walks.Thats either they are afraid to throw strikes or they just can’t Sam Tiger and Burke are the only 3 from opening day

    • Mark Moore

More than a little truth to this Roger. At least that’s what I would suspect. Just a whole lot of Jekyll and Hyde act.

    • Kevin H

I started laughing after Antone walked two in a row. Its like a jink or something. Lol

  84. Oldtimer

I love to read the RLN commenters words then go to http://www.reds,com to check the score.

Despite doom and gloom here and there, Reds 5, Mets 3, bottom of 8th.

  85. Chris

Would be nice to pick up an insurance run before the ninth

  86. Mark Moore

Well, as Samuel Jackson once said, “Hold on to your butts!”

  87. Brett

    OK EVERBODY!!!! HERE COMES TONY!!!!!!

  88. Dennis Westrick

I thought Luke Weaver was on that other obnoxious NY baseball team! Did they get tired of his act?

    • ksdavis

He had a pretty good year and then an average year with the Yanks. Having another pretty good year with the Mets. Noticed he hasn’t started since he left Reds.

    • Oldtimer

No. He excelled for NYY and has done the same for NYM. He has sub 3.00 ERA since he joined NYY in 2023. If only RLN commenters paid attention and had a clue.

Weaver has gone 16 straight games without allowing a run. His WHIP is under 1.0 for the season. His ERA is 2.35 for the season.

      • ksdavis

Obvious that he wasn’t meant to be a starter. But I am guessing that the Reds needed him to start in 23.

Stand corrected with my above statement. He did make three starts for the Yanks in 2023, but since 2024 bullpen exclusive.

      • Oldtimer

He certainly had better outcomes as a reliever. Gerrit Cole of NYY taught him an improved way to throw his fastball for NYY.

Happy to see him do well in NYC.

  89. Kevin H

Oh there is Larkin… lol… hadn’t heard him much since arriving home. Lol

  90. CincyDo

I didn’t realize that Antone can still pump fastball to 96. But what makes him better than Santillan, imo, is he throws a few more different pitches: cut, slider, and sinker. Walking batters is an across the board problem for Reds pitchers.

  91. Dennis Westrick

Big out of Bichette there! Want the bases empty with Soto coming up!

  92. Mark Moore

No legit chance to throw him out there. But it stayed in the park.

  93. GPod

there is no question Soto was running on inside of the white line on the last 10 feet before reaching the bag….should not the ump see that?

    • Redwave

Tito was asleep and didn’t argue it

  94. ksdavis

Graham with two homeruns tonight including a grand slam.

  95. Mark Moore

Somebody yelled “PIZZA!” just as Tony threw the ball. 😀

  96. VaRedsFan

    Big win….
    Winning a Singer start

    • Dennis Westrick

Singer deserved this win! Just wish he could stretch his starts to 6 or 7 innings!

  97. Mark Moore

    Nice job MattyMc!!!

Way to hold them down Tony.

  98. Kevin H

That was by far the best Santillan has looked all season. We need him to continue

  99. Kevin H

I noticed some have now said all reds are doing is hitting hr they need base hits. A year ago or some were saying power wins.

    Which is it? Lol

    Reds Win!!

    • greenmtred

The narrative changes with the situation, evidently. Having something to complain about is paramount.

      • Kevin H

Hey good to see your comments Greenmtred

      • greenmtred

Thanks, Kevin. I always enjoy your comments.

  100. Dennis Westrick

Big Tony with the save! Will have to save my blood pressure medicine for another night!

  101. RedlegScott

The pen holds up minus a homer from Moll. Singer gets a well-deserved win. Stewart carries the O.

  102. RedsGettingBetter

Finally the Reds won a series and two games in a row… Go sweep tomorrow in Lodolo’s day

  103. Andrew Brewer

The Mets made a game of it, and our relievers held.

I’m reminded of the time when Melvin said, “Is Weaver pitching today ?”

Yeah, Melvin, but for the other team. And, no, the Reds didn’t score a bunch, except in the first.

  104. Dennis Westrick

Maybe the Rockies won’t blow a lead in the ninth inning in their game with the Stupid Cubs like they did last night!

  105. 70times7

Nice job Tony! Geno 6 k’s in row, Steer 2-32. Our 5,6 “hitters”.

    • Dennis Westrick

It’s Boom or Bust with Geno! Same hitting pattern he had when he played for the Reds during his first tour of duty!

    • greenmtred

Steer hit a homer. Selective memory?

      • Dennis Schiavone

Thanks JB for accurate information concerning MM instead of some emotional feelings about sending him to AAA

      • greenmtred

It was a big enough deal in last night’s game. He’s in a slump now. Everybody has those. Big deal. He was hitting well before.
