Chase Burns

It has been a dominant year thus far for Burns. He’s made 13 starts and in one of them he’s allowed more than two runs. That start came back on April 10th when the Los Angeles Angels hit two home runs off of him and scored five in a game that the Reds lost 10-2. In his last 12 starts he’s pitched into the 6th inning in every game, but he’s also only reached the 7th inning twice and neither of those times were in the last month.

The splits for Burns are quite noticeable. It’s not that left-handed hitters are performing all that well against him – they don’t hit for average or get on base much, but they are showing solid-ish power when they do get hits. It’s that Burns is embarrassing right-handed hitters to the tune of a .445 OPS.

Tobias Myers

A starter in the past, Myers has spent most of the last two seasons in a relief role in the big leagues with Milwaukee and now New York. He’s started two games this year and both outings saw him pitch into the 2nd inning but not the 3rd.  In two of his last three games he’s faced the Reds, throwing 1.1 perfect innings on May 25th and then allowed a run in 0.2 innings two days later. He’s been in Triple-A for the last two weeks but is coming back for this game.

The splits this year are huge. Right-handed hitters are crushing him and they are walking as much as they strike out – which is not often. Left-handed hitters have one walk and 20 strikeouts while hitting .162. A third of the hits from lefties have been home runs, though – so they make them count when they do get them.

Fully expect Burns to limit the Mets to 2 runs or less! The question is can the Reds score more than 2 runs? Let’s hope the offense shows up tonight!

  2. Mark Moore

Let’s go Burns. Let’s go Boyz!

Kick some Metro tail to the Purple Bridge and beyond tonight.

  3. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds must to win this series and if they can sweep would be very huge. The next series looks pretty tough against NYY who will likely send Schilttler , Warren and Cole to the mound….When would Pierce Johnson start a rehab ?

  4. Dennis Westrick

Just a reminder! Soto is a Reds Killer! Proceed with caution!

  5. Mark Moore

That was a tad embarrassing for Mr. Soto. Serves him right for the late time out.

  6. Chris

That’s some hustle right there from Dunn!

  7. Chris

Tough luck again. Bleday smacked that ball!

    • Jason T.

He’s been very unlucky as of late.

  8. Chris

Why do most of those players look so young the didn’t use to forty fifty yrs ago they looked my age…

    • Chris

Double steal! I like it! Use our speed!

  9. Mark Moore

Cowboy, “Juan Soto didn’t pick that ball up until it landed.”

Nice way to open the game.

  10. Jason T.

Nice job on the double steal then Steer getting Dunn home.

    Very nice homer from Suarez!

    • CI3J

I thought it was a can of corn the way Soto stood there frozen. Thought it was going to drop right to him without him needing to move.

It was only a few seconds later when he started sprinting for the wall that I thought it was going to go out. Coming off the bat, it looked like a fly out, but I guess it got just enough drive behind it.

      • Jason T.

Totally get it! Soto was totally off guard and definitely searching. Just seemed to carry and carry and so glad it did. We needed an inning like that.

  11. Dennis Westrick

    Good start! Let’s keep scoring!

  12. Jason T.

    Chase is dealing! Yes please.
So happy to watch his maturation this season.

    • CI3J

33 pitches through 2 is still a little high.

But he absolutely looks like an elite pitcher otherwise.

      • Jason T.

        Definitely elite!
Yeah, you make a good point. Something to work on and get himself later into games. More innings, less bullpen, win all around.

      • Mark Moore

But do the math and this is what you get from a predominantly strikeout pitcher.

27 batters, average 5 each MINIMUM, 135 pitches. Which ain’t gonna happen these days.

Complete new respect for Seaver, Carlton, etc. from back in the day.

  13. Mark Moore

Nice 2nd from Chase. Crowd already tasting pizza.

    • Jason T.

Speaking of pizza, in Chicago for a work conference. Lou Malnati’s pizza for dinner and Graeter’s ice cream for dessert. Reds winning, a trifecta here.

      • Mark Moore

Not bad … but you missed an opportunity in my book.

Exchequer on Wabash under the El is the absolute best Chicago-style I’ve ever had. 😀

      • Jason T.

I’m here all week! Added to the list!

      • Mark Moore

Weber Grill on State and Grand is also highly recommended. Multiple Thanksgiving Day dinners there over the years.

  14. Chris

I keep losing the MLB feed? Anyone else?

    • Mark Moore

Solid as a rock here. I’m synched with WLW audio on the laptop. No glitches.

    • doofus

Yes. Just back out and pop back in. Manfred wants us to work for our opportunity to watch games.

  15. Mark Moore

Question for you locals from my First Wife …

What is it that we see “floating” across the CF camera pretty much every night?

SteveO smoked that one. Too bad MattyMc didn’t swipe 2nd first.

    • JB

Can’t help you this series. I’m blacked out. Had to get a free trial from SNY to watch the series. Will have to do same for the Yankee series. (Gotham App) Positive side no Sadak.

      • Mark Moore

Yes … but you and I both know the true history of lacrosse and the approximate dimensions of Seneca Lake (not to mention the difference between Cayuga Lake and Keuka Lake) … 😉

      • JB

Lol true but I live 4-5 hours from the city. Blackout is rediculous

      • Mark Moore

My “local teams” are Washington and Baltimore. Similar distance and never on any station here.

    • VaRedsFan

      Not local, as you know.
But looks like cottonwood tree shedding its seeds.

  16. Mark Moore

Sac Bunt that goes for a single. Got to love it.

  17. RedsGettingBetter

Dunn has cooled off in last games…he’s stranded a lot of runners

  18. Jason T.

Reds recipients of a bases loaded walk, heck yeah!

  19. JB

Perfect swing by Sal. Don’t need to kill it. Just slap it into the outfield.

  20. VaRedsFan

Nice 2 strike approach by Sal.
I wish the team were forced to do that all the time with 2 strikes.

    • TR

One of the most deflating things in baseball is taking a third strike.

  21. Old-school

Need to check my sources but I thought suarez got cut and should never play again and horrific signing for reasonable $15 mil 1 year

    • JB

There wouldn’t be any players on the team if people got their way. Smh

    • VaRedsFan

Basically it’s 2, or 3 people that spew the same nonsense every game.

    • 70times7

One good game does not make up for 2 bad months. Very bad. But I hope he’s coming around

    • Brian1

He’s up to Negative .5 WAR so he definitely hasn’t come close to earning that 15 mil…. yet. Let’s hope that this is just the beginning of good things from him.

  22. RedlegScott

Could we please have a little more offense like this?

  23. Chris

Chase Burns has got to be pinching himself.

  24. VaRedsFan

    I guess the MV’s and the RA’s don’t want to sit Suarez anymore…unless he K’s his next 3 AB’s

    • 70times7

Geno has a lot of catching up to do

    • Mark Moore

I very much prefer him at DH where he can do exactly that and not take the defense down a notch. But tonight … I don’t really care.

    • Old-school

Suarez single handedly won a game in Texas with massive late 3 run bomb or was it twins … not looking it up

      Hes won this game

Hes gonna K and slump but geez when he gets on a heater he carries the team

Great risk reward signing and ill take him at 3b over hayes but sal geno lowe and Steer +++ at CI DH arent the problem

  25. Mark Moore

Funny fact and small world …

The kid on the mound who just gave up that blast pitched in college for Shorter University (Rome, GA). My DD#1 was on staff in their drama department for 3 years. I’ve been there multiple times. They have a Baby Braves club where she worked for one season.

    • Jason T.

      That’s awesome! Small world indeed.

      • Mark Moore

In case you missed it above, Weber Grill at State & Grand is also a favorite place.

      • Jason T.

Appreciate the recommendations! I’m adding to my list!

  26. Dennis Westrick

I’m at a loss for words! Has there been an alien invasion?

  27. Jason T.

    Chase, we’re not worthy!
    Keep it up.

  28. Mark Moore

Geno giving Marte a lesson in bubble gum?

  29. GPod

Reds taking out a lot of fustration on the Mets tonight… maybe it’s the light at the end of the tunnel… climb out of the hole and start a winning streak…could happen

  30. RedAlert

Please get Sadak a muzzle ….maybe he can borrow it from Larkin

    • Mark Moore

He came with an extra full XXL word bag tonight? I feel for you.

  31. Jeremiah

Anyway the Reds can get the Mets on the schedule more this year?

    • VaRedsFan

It usually coincides with Burns pitching

  32. Mark Moore

Find some green, Dunn. Just scoot one through.

    Nope.

  33. Chris

A little adversity but Burns worked out of it. All part of growth as a pitcher.

  34. Dennis Westrick

Not complaining but Burns’ 2 walks that inning added 10+ pitches to his game pitch count!

  35. Jeremiah

Maybe Suarez will get hot. That’s what they paid him the big bucks for. It’s nice to see he’s still capable of putting some power out. Main thing is runners consistently being on in front of him.

  36. Mark Moore

    Backwards K … what a bum … DFA him now …

OK, let’s not get complacent even though we’re ahead. Wainwright said no lead is ever safe at GABP.

    😉

  37. dimondfvr

So Burns throws 30 pitches last inning, and the Reds promptly come up and go down on a total of six pitches. They don’t give the guy time to catch his breath!

    • Chris

Yes, seems like MLBers would be pretty aware and take up some time while up to bat for pitcher’s sake.

    • Dennis Westrick

That requires baseball awareness, intelligence, and plate disclipline!

  38. Mike Adams

    Hey!
5 or 6 more runs by the Reds and this game will be “bull pen proofed”

  39. Mark Moore

Was that Cowboy taking the cap off a Mexican Coke I heard? And maybe dropping the cap?

  40. Dennis Westrick

Sorry guys! The walks by Burns with a 9-0 lead are irritating!

    • WCRon

He is laboring bad. Can’t go more than 5. Hope the BP can hang on. Have seen them blow big leads

    • Mark Moore

Yes they are. Excessive BB’s are always irritating. Would be a shame if he can’t finish the 5th for the W.

And he owes Dunn a big surf and turf dinner.

      • Dennis Westrick

Well, Burns survived the 5th! Now it’s time for Bullpen Roulette!

To be a truly elite pitcher (and Burns will be!) you have to pitch beyond the 5th inning on a regular basis!

  41. Jason T.

Chase with back to back tough innings but credit to him for not allowing any runs.

  42. dimondfvr

Yea. I get it. Let Burns get five innings for the win. But he threw 1o5 pitches last game, and 101 tonight. That isn’t good management.

  43. Redwave

What is the word on Derek Johnson? Has anyone heard what’s going on?

    • Mark Moore

Crickets. Figure it’s pretty intense at this point.

  44. Dennis Westrick

Gotta be honest! Burke makes me nervous!

  45. Mark Moore

Oh the chatter in the WLW booth when we’re attempting a blow-out 😮

  46. Dennis Westrick

SIX WALKS by Reds pitchers so far thru 6.1 innings! Just sayin’!

  47. WCRon

I know we need bodies. But Ferguson is beyond terrible.

    • Mark Moore

True … but what are the options available to us? It’s a thin market to begin with and an even thinner farm system.

Nice pitch by Petty. I’m guessing they’d like him to finish the game.

    • Kevin H

Looking at his numbers. He isnt terrible. His era is 1.93. He has been one of the better bullpen arms reds have.

  48. Dennis Westrick

The Cincinnati Reds have been playing professional baseball since 1881. In those 145 years they have not come up with a defense for a walk!

    • Oldtimer

Reds started playing professional baseball in 1869. Then AA in 1882 and NL in 1890.

  49. dimondfvr

Apparently, Reds hitters wore themselves out after scoring 9 runs in two innings.

  50. dimondfvr

Yep. Do you expect anything less. This is a place to offer opinions the last time I checked

    • JB

      I get that but it’s 9-0. Can’t anybody just enjoy that ?

      • dimondfvr

Okay. I feel better now! No more complaining — tonight. LOL 🙂

      • JB

Let’s wait until they are losing. We have seen enough of that lately. 🙂

  51. Roger Garrett

Petty throwing strikes and got 4 outs on 5 pitches. It can happen believe it or not

  52. MBS

I just scored a Jeter Downs rookie card. Remember the turmoil many here had when we gave him and Gray up in a trade

  53. Mark Moore

Yeah … I’m thinking that’s enough of a lead to be comfortable.

  54. Dennis Westrick

Wish we could have saved some of those 12 runs for the next 2 games!

  55. Chris

It’s all starting to come together, Pepper.

  56. Mark Moore

    And the pizza K.

    Nice job by Petty.

  57. Kevin H

What a nice refreshing game. Petty bullpen full time? Time will tell, and let’s hope its the start of a roll!!!

    • Dennis Schiavone

I’m so glad no one tonight has ripped into Matty. He hadn’t missed a beat at short. Told you so told you so. LOL

  58. Doc

I hope something is learned. If starters can only give 5-6, need to cultivate relievers who can give 3 innings. Petty pitches like Miz of the Brewers. 2.1 innings on 20 pitches. Superb.

    • TR

Maybe the Reds can develop Chase Petty, age 23, into the closer they definitely need and then build a strong bullpen around him.

  59. Dennis Westrick

Burns record is now 8-1 with an ERA of 2.01. Yet those baseball geniuses over on ESPN still are talking up Paul Skenes as a Cy Young candidate with his 6-6 record and 2.85 ERA!

    • Doc

When did ESPN ever hire a baseball genius?

    • Doug Gray

When the year ends Paul Skenes almost assuredly will have a better case because unlike Burns, Skenes isn’t going to be shut down and or moved to the bullpen in order to limit his innings.

Of course Skenes right now has a whole lot of catching up to do against Cristopher Sanchez….

  60. LDS

Suarez is a streak hitter and often hits well in the summer months. Plus, despite his denials, missing a chunk of ST got him off to a slow start. Maybe that’s over. Get Elly back in the next week, maybe Greene as well and things might start looking up. Especially if Petty can keep it up. Not the kind of game we see nearly often enough. But I’ll take when they come, especially getting that 1/2 game on Milwaukee.
