Sam Haggerty has joined the Cincinnati Reds organization after signing a minor league deal with the club this weekend. He has been assigned to Triple-A to play with the Louisville Bats.

In each of the last eight seasons Sam Haggerty has spent at least part of the season in Major League Baseball. He made his debut in 2019 with the New York Mets. He played in 11 games that season. Haggerty was claimed on waivers prior to spring training in 2020 by the Seattle Mariners and spend 2021-2024 with their organization before joining the Texas Rangers in 2025. That’s also where he was at in 2026.

Haggerty has spent his big league career as a utility player and has only topped 200 plate appearances in a season once. That was back in 2022 with Seattle and he had 201 plate appearances that year in his 83 games played. In 2025 he hit .253/.328/.370 for Texas in 182 plate appearances over 64 games.

This year he struggled in a more limited role. While he had played in 35 games for the Rangers he only had 47 plate appearances. When he did get a chance to get into the batters box things didn’t go well for him. He hit just .159, walked just two times, and he had just one extra-base hit. All of that led to a .395 OPS before he was designated for assignment on June 5th. Two days later he had cleared waivers and was given his release. You can see his career stats here.

It was less than a week that he was on the market before the Cincinnati Reds scooped him up on a minor league deal. The 32-year-old utility player will likely get somewhat regular playing time in Triple-A with Louisville and if he can get things turned around at the plate and look more like the hitter he has in the past at the big league level prior to this year, he may be able to get back to the highest level where his ability to sub in at just about every spot on the field except catcher has some value on the bench.

This makes me think a possible trade may be around the corner? Possibly MM?

Low risk move to see if he can do anything in Louisville. Not a bad idea.

  3. Votto4life

Give him some credit, the guy has been around a long time and has bounced around a lot. A lot of players would have given up by now. I wish him the best. Easy guy to root for.

Santiago Espinal replacement but probably not as good as Espy. Espy hit 245 in his 2 years with the Reds. Now hitting 260 with the Dodgers. I doubt that Hagerty has that in him. Don’t really know what this move is all about. We really don’t need another soft hitting utility player since we already have McLain and Arroyo. Maybe Krall has extra money to throw around. Doesn’t sound particularly good for Arroyo …or maybe not so bad if he gets traded. Dodgers are always keen on switch hitting utility players like Edwin.

I mean, sure, why not? No harm in kicking the tires.

Even if it pans out, it’s not likely to have much of an effect on the Reds’ season.

The Reds already struggle to find enough AB’s for Lowe, Steer, Suarez, and crew.
When Elly comes back, that becomes even more difficult.
So, I don’t envision him playing in Cincy anytime soon.

But this move seems to imply they are moving somebody from L’ville and need a warm body in AAA to fill that roster spot?

I mean Louisville has been starting Dominic Pitelli out of necessity. He was hitting .196/.272/.357 in Double-A this season. He hit .186/.283/.248 in Double-A last season.

      • Michael K McCurry

Wow, just wow….and expected Doug. We perpetuate mediocrity in a endless cycle that we’ve saw since the 1990 WS team. Doug I’m 58yrs old, and I feel like I’ll be in my grave before we’re going to see a World Series again and become a successfully run winning organization again, what’s your thoughts?

    • Oldtimer

It doesn’t necessarily imply that at all. It DOES imply they need AAA depth among position players.

Yawn. Hopefully, he never sets foot in Cincinnati. Just another Krall fantasy.

  8. Klugo

Maybe some pitching depth behind Trevino? He may be reaching his pitch count for the year.

    • Oldtimer

Need to save Trevino for his 2 (yes, TWO) OPS+ this season.

AAA bench piece. Don’t read anything else into it.

I do see McLain trade rumors are starting to fly around.

That is an obvious reality, since the national scribes will notice that Arroyo is proving to be capable of staying with the Reds. I can’t see a reason to send him back, but they likely will — for the moment.
Haggarty is a transaction; he’s not a topic of conversation.

He will be in Cincinnati at some point you can guarantee it.

Glad to see that Krall and Company are working AROUND THE CLOCK! to make the Reds better.
This is a pretty profound waiver wire acquisition, I mean to tell you. It’s part of the key to solving the bullpen problems.

    Is it?

    • MK

Maybe they can request another team to DFA a solid reliever they can select.

The Bats are actually real live people and they are required to put a team on the field, even if it’s not to our interest. I’d guess Arroyo is planning to stay with the Reds, and the infielders they have now aren’t getting any days off. Some of the comments here suggest fans who have no real grasp of that.

Good thing the Reds moved quickly on this. I’m told that the Dodgers, Braves, and Brewers all had their eyes on Mr. Haggerty.

Ridiculous comment. He is AAA depth.

Almost the same line up today, no Elly, which is bad news. Tito is going to go down with Suarez and even Stephenson, Dunn, Sal, and Steer but truthfully what choice does he have but hoping, praying, they start to hit. I just don’t see it but I sure hope so. The season is slipping away. I really thought Elly would be back by now, this is not a good sign.

    • LDS

based on Tito’s comments over the weekend, my guess is that Elly wants to be back now, but the doctors don’t think he’s ready.

    • Oldtimer

      Your choices (OPS+) are:

      C Stephenson 74 Trevino 2
      INF Sal 115 McLean 84 Lowe 129 Steer 108 Suarez 74 Arroyo 39
      OF Bleday 151 Benson 77 Myers 110 Dunn 91 Marte 81

These are season long OPS+ numbers. 100 is average.

    • Mark Moore

They have been pretty straight forward about not rushing him and letting the medical staff clear him. I don’t take this as anything but news … neither good nor bad.

    • JB

You don’t want any of those guys to play? Who else would you rather have playing than those 5? You literally post the dumbest crap every day.

  18. Mark Moore

Geno at 3B and Sal at DH. Happy they are both “in”. Confused as to why Geno gets 3B time at all.

  19. Mark A Verticchio

Too much Dunn and not enough Myers and I agree Suarez should not play 3rd if at all. That is turning into another horrible Reds signing.

    • TR

The result if not being able to compete with the Phillies for Schwarber.

  20. Oldtimer

Schwarber chose (preferred) the Phillies over the Reds.
