Last night the Cincinnati Reds took until 1:30am ET to put the final stamp on an 11-inning win over San Diego. That win evened up the series between the two clubs. Cincinnati will look to topple the Padres again this afternoon and come away with a series win out on the west coast. This afternoon’s 1st pitch is scheduled for 4:10pm ET.

Brady Singer

It’s been a rough season for Singer to this point. He’s had a few solid starts this year, but he’s had some big time struggles quite often, too. Cincinnati last won a game he started on April 25th. His ERA since then has been 6.92 over six starts. The last time out was easily his best outing and he allowed one earned run in 4.0 innings that day.

When it comes to the splits there’s only one area where Singer is doing well and that’s walks. Neither lefties or righties are drawing walks against him at a high rate. Righties have a solid average and they are hitting for a ton of power against him while making lots of contact. Lefties are making less contact but still plenty of it, and they are hitting like prime Ted Williams without as many walks when facing him.

Michael King

After his start on May 18th, King had an ERA of 2.31. He had allowed just four home runs in 10 starts. In the three starts since then he’s also given up four home runs and has been charged with 13 earned runs in 15.2 innings while striking out just 10 batters.

Teams have been stacking left-handed hitters against King this season but it has not worked out for them. Lefties are hitting for a worse average, walking less often, and hitting for less power. Righties aren’t hitting for too much average, but they are walking often and hitting for more – but moderate – power.

News and Notes

Chase Petty up, Zach McCambley down

The Reds decided they needed to at least have some innings available out of the bullpen today if needed and called up starting pitcher Chase Petty to be in San Diego in case that situation arose. He’s taking the place in the bullpen of reliever Zach McCambley, who was optioned to Triple-A. You can read more about both guys here from our piece earlier today.

I’m still tired from last night. Need Singer to step up today.

    • Dennis Schiavone

We all can get back to our bedtime schedule tonight.hopefully winning the series would sure be nice

  2. Mark Moore

Steer at 2B doesn’t produce much in the way of warm fuzzy feelings for me …

Chance to at least win the series before limping back to the Queen City.

    • Brian1

He’s a positive WAR at any position and is acceptable with Elly out. I don’t like sitting Arroyo though. Maybe play Arroyo at second, Steer at first and bench Lowe and his gold glove. I’m not a McLain fan but he is the best defensive second baseman. Is he better at SS than Arroyo?

      • Dennis Westrick

Agree about Arroyo! He impressed me with that 11-pitch AB last night!

      • Roger Garrett

Steer is used to insure Geno and Lowe both play.He will bounce from second to the outfield which puts Arroyo on the bench and like last night Marte watches. On occasion he will play some first by far his best position.Arroyo nor Marte are starters on this team as it is right now. They will play some but not every day in the majors. Its just the way it is until it isn’t.Lowe is a professional hitter and Geno makes 15 mil on a one year deal to hit homers. He will be given every at bat possible to do just that.Tito just can’t help himself to not move MMC up in the lineup. His speed and defense say he is a starter and belongs at the top of the order but his bat says nope and nope and nope again.Maybe today it does.

    • Dennis Westrick

MMC in the leadoff spot doesn’t give me even cold fuzzies!

  3. Dennis Westrick

The Reds 15 Million Dollar Man, Mr. Suarez, needs to step it up! HRs are nice but hits with RISP would be even better!

    • Brian1

He did have a big hit lastnight but was 3 for 40 before that for an .075 avg.
He needs to start sitting if he doesn’t pick it up, that negative.7 WAR and .203 avg.is looking pretty ugly.

  4. Dennis Westrick

Reds make it easy on King with a 1-2-3 first inning on only 7 pitches!

Let’s see if Singer can duplicate that!

    • Dennis Schiavone

@Dennis Westrick. Do you have to wear a suit every workday.Asking for a friend

  5. Roger Garrett

Petty will be in the game shortly.Singer with his stuff has to be perfect and he just hasn’t been this year.

  6. JB

Seriously Higgins? You challenge that one but you don’t on the Merrill Strikeout which led to a run.

  7. Dennis Westrick

Higgins does know he can challenge the HP umpire’s calls, right? Singer’s 5th pitch to Merrill looked like a strike on TV!

  8. JB

Should be 0-0. This whole crew sucks behind the plate.

  9. Mark Moore

I’m in agreement that Higgins probably cost us that run with his “enthusiasm” to take it around the horn when he should have challenged the call of a ball.

OK, at least he won the next one and they got Manny at the plate.

Time for some offense. Have to mute the sound so I can lead my 4:30 meeting.

    • Dennis Schiavone

Why would you ever start a meeting at 4:30. You should have gotten a government job like I did. Lol

  10. Chris

Are you in kidding me,Bleday!? Nice throw! Tag by Higgins.

  11. DW

Wow! Has Manny Machado gotten slow or what!? Looked like he was running in water. We’ll take it!

    • Dennis Westrick

      Father Time has never lost!

  12. Mark A Verticchio

Higgins cost Singer a run and he can’t afford that the way he is pitching.

  13. Daytonnati

Anyone else tired of “going perpendicular”? I suspect I have seen that ad 200 times so far and the season is relatively young?

  14. Dennis Westrick

Nice bounce back inning by Singer! Still fuming over Higgins not challenging that pitch (an obvious strike) in the Merrill AB in the 1st inning!

    • Mark A Verticchio

I am with you Dennis, that was obvious.

  15. JohnnySofa

Must be hard for Marte to look at the scoreboard and see that he still has 0 RBIs.

  16. Mark A Verticchio

it would be just like this team to get a big win and then come out flat as can be. Moving Mclain to lead off is a very poor move my bet is he doesn’t get on base.

    • JohnnySofa

Every time he collects a few hits, he’s instantly bumped back into the #1 or #2 spot. He hits .158 as a leadoff hitter, as opposed to .500 in the #7 hole and .250 as the number-9 hitter. He clearly has stunk at the top of the order since 2023. But someone blindly believes THIS time the old magic will reappear. No, wait … THIS time. No one else is given this much grace.

    • Brett

Yeah I can’t figure it out either. Francona again, having those La Russa-esque gut pains errrrr feelings.

  17. Dennis Westrick

MMC has very little plate discipline! Just don’t get it! His ABs make Manny Sanguillen look like a hitting savant!

  18. Dennis Westrick

Doug, any update on Elly’s likely return date?

    • ksdavis

supposed to get an MRI Friday when back in Cincinnati. Depends on that result

  19. old-school

Some really poor years by veterans.
    Machado .171
Lorenzen 0-5 with ERA 10 last 5 starts and getting shelled @ Coors
Castillo stunk outside of Seattle before but now just stinks ERA 5.16
Swanson .182 and benched 2 days.
    Bregman .675 OPS and apologized
    Bo Bichette .606 OPS

Why you dont shell out $100-200 mil to guys over 30

    • Dennis Westrick

I hear Nick Castellanos is available!

      • WCRon

He may still be in San Diego and ready to go

  20. Roger Garrett

Tito I get it about MMC and his defense and his speed and what he was in 2023.Please please just leave him in the 8 hole or 9 hole and play him every day for as long as you want.He has seen 3 pitches in the lead off spot today and made two outs. That is not a top of the order bat.Its not.I get it that its a get away day game and the plane is ready and we are in a hurry to get on it but please.

    • Dennis Westrick

Bleday or Stewart would have been a better choice IMO!

  21. Dennis Westrick

Why was Stewart swinging 3-0 just after the Padres SP threw a wild pitch? Not smart baseball gents!

  22. JB

3-0 count and last ball went to the backstop. Sal swings. Just let him walk you and be a team player.

  23. Roger Garrett

It didn’t take but a couple of months to send Friedl down but it may take years to do anything with MMC.He is not a top of the order bat.He has seen 3 pitches and made two outs.I am ok if they never ever do anything but please leave him at the the bottom of the order. No reason not to have Myers just slide into that spot while Dunn takes a day off.

    • JB

I for one want McLain to swing more on first pitch. It’s the best pitch he will see in my opinion because he is below the average of first pitch swinging. He is about 28 %. Pitchers know it and throw it down the middle. McLain said he likes to see what the pitcher had. He handcuffs himself. He does need to be at bottom of the order though.

  24. JB

Someone complaining about Steer last night? Spencer says shut it.

    • VaRedsFan

It’s the same 2-3 people that wait, and come in here once the Reds are losing, to start complaining.

You can set your watch to it.

  25. old-school

    Steer massive bomb!
He is half way to 20 homers yet again in early/mid June.

    • JB

Yet people don’t like him and wanted to get rid of him because he doesn’t deliver.

      • old-school

Go easy on them. I was skeptical of Dunn but you challenged me and hes been a huge lift last 3 weeks. Elite speed and defense and scrappy hitter.

Dunn/Myers/Bleday/Steer/Elly/Sal/Lowe all solid years. Need MM/Arroyo/Marte to grab their spot. Maybe Suarez catches a heater???? Or not……Catching is what it is and pretty much every other team too.

      • WCRon

He is a reliable solid citizen. We need more of that in all walks of life

  26. Roger Garrett

Need to leave him alone for sure.On a team that looks like they never picked up a bat on some nights and hitting is hard at least he produces.Lets also keep in mind he moves all over the diamond and that has to effect him.Maybe he just needs to play first.Just a thought.

  27. Dennis Westrick

Thank God for Steer! Unfortunately, may need more that 2 runs unless Singer emulates the ghost of Cy Young today!

    • Mark A Verticchio

Sorry Dennis I don’t see that happening. I just hope he can hold onto the lead for an inning.

      • Dennis Westrick

Singer is battling! At least thru the first 4 innings!

  28. Jeremiah

Steer I think only has a .4 WAR which is not very good for this time in the season. I think moving him all around actually may lessens his value. It feels like aside from the WAR stat he’s having a good season. The Reds should probably put him at his 1st or 2nd best Defensive position and not move him at all, and then figure out the other positions.

    • old-school

All you need to judge Steer by is wRC+ or OPS+. Hes a good hitter and versatile defender and good 1b but WAR doesn’t account for that.

WAR rewards middle of the field defense and speed and is not the end all be all. It loves Matt McLain. It hates corner OF/IF bats who arent Joey Votto or Willie Wilson.

Adam Dunn career WAR 18. 462 HR and OPS +124 but a donkey.
      Dante Bichette career War 5.7.
      1995 season
      .340/.364/.620 40 HR 128 RBI 2nd in MVP- season WAR 1.2

Anyone want Bichette playing LF and batting 3rd?

      • Jeremiah

I like the WAR stat on Baseball Reference as it kind of gives a general glance at a player’s productivity, but I agree it isn’t the be all end all, and I’m not too sure how accurate it generally is at times. I’ll be honest I’m kind of old school mostly paying attention to Average an OBP. I still don’t really understand OPS…I guess I should look into it a bit!

  29. Dennis Westrick

Often wonder what goes thru Singer’s head when he is pitching with a lead?

  30. CincyDo

Another play that Meyers couldn’t finish. I’ve seen a few of them this year. He needs to improve. Dunn is opposite, he gets the deal “done” defensively

    • Dennis Westrick

Watching the Reds outfield these days is more thrilling than a ride at Disney World!

  31. Mark A Verticchio

I just don’t think Mclain will ever be what we had hoped, even expected, after 2023.

  32. Dennis Westrick

McLain couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat right now! And we wonder why the Reds have so many RISP left out to dry!

  33. GPod

why do the reds just stop hitting when there are runners in scoring position? It has been a huge problem all season long

  34. Dennis Westrick

As expected, the Reds squander another opportunity to expand their lead! BOTH Reds hitters with an opportunity to drive in a run struck out! Happens far too often!

  35. Roger Garrett

Singer has kept the Reds in it but well our offense is not getting it done so far.Maybe they bust out with some crooked numbers .

  36. JB

They keep putting on that shift and Tatis keeps hitting it in that 2nd base hole.

  37. Dennis Westrick

The one guy that will kill you in the Padres’ lineup (Tatis, Jr.) does it again with 2 outs and a RISP! Never fails! Just after the Reds squandered an excellent run scoring opportunity!

  38. Nick in NKY

The offense so far is its typical state: offensive. (Haha)

But I’m going to need this version of Brady singer from here on out. This will play. Location is on point and pitch mix looks good.

  39. Indy Red Man

Seems like 40% of RLN has given up on Marte and wants him gone, but idk?

4-13 with 2 walks (.400 obp) and 3 steals isn’t too bad so far

  40. old-school

Singer kept them in the game with 2 runs in 5 innings. Not bad for the 5th starter. Hes been very poor but not today. Worse case scenario he gets you a AA relief pitcher at the deadline if things continue down a bad trajectory for the team. If he can just give 5 innings and reasonable ERA for the next month and a chance to win. He did that today.

  41. Gpod

Once again…men on base to drive in….failure

  42. RedsGettingBetter

Nice outing by Singer against an underperforming Padres lineup but it has some dangerous pieces

  43. RedsGettingBetter

McLain was getting hot and taking walks in last games but Tito moves him for the leadoff spot and he is 0-4 2Ks

    • ksdavis

On the TV broadcast the Cowboy talked about how Matt M changes is approach when he is batting leadoff. Not for the better.

3-23 in the leadoff position this year,

  44. CincyDo

Bleday got a hold of that change up.

  45. RedsGettingBetter

Bleday!! went deep with 2-outs…Reds ahead!

    • Brett

Joey, one of the best batting eyes ever. Sal’s got a pretty good eye as well.

  46. JB

Votto would have had a field day with ABS.

      • JB

Votto would have intimidated umps. Ted Williams,Tony Gwynn etc. Joe West and Angel Hernandez would be sweating.

      • Brett

I’m pretty sure Joe West sweats all the time anyway.

  47. Dennis Westrick

McLain is currently 0-4 as the leadoff hitter! Enough said!

      • ksdavis

not just one game. Discussion by Cowboy around the 6th inning that Matt changes his approach in the leadoff spot – and not for the better.3-23 in the leadoff coming into today.

  48. Brett

J.J. Y’know, when they finally rebuild, I’m thinkin’ HE’S a keeper. Cowboy pretty much summed it up about McLain during that last at bat. About time somebody spoke the truth.

  49. CincyDo

Bled at and Steer have a Hr swing. I don’t have data and I don’t want to look it up, but I am willing to bet that they have a lot more fly out/ pop out than ground outs. But when they connect, man, it’s extra base.

  50. Indy Red Man

13.50 Baby Huey in high leverage? Tito are you losing it?

    • old-school

Ricky Karcher saved a game once…..just sayin’

    • Indy Red Man

Actually he was at 3.50 with Lville this year and 4.50 with the Reds last year. Why not? We’re not going anywhere and you can’t pitch Moll & Tony every game

    • CincyDo

Desperation breeds madness. Maxwell came through though.

  51. old-school

Maxwell got Tatis out to preserve the lead. Did not have that on my bingo card this morning!

  52. RedsGettingBetter

A little bit scary Big sugar got the scoreless

  53. RedsGettingBetter

That Geno’s shot is welcome! tacking to the lead

  54. JB

Geno’s swings I thought looked better today. Not surprised he homered. Maybe he is coming out of it.

  55. CincyDo

All right. A double last night and a Hr today. Sign of life.

    • David

105.9 MPH? Is he qualifying at Indy? That’s actually pretty slow! 🙂

I know, the velocity of the batted ball.

Maybe the Reds are starting to come out of their doldrums.

This weekend against the Diamondbacks, a contestant for a Wild Card spot, and then the Mets.

  56. RedsGettingBetter

The most of Reds runs scored have done by homers…

  57. GPod

Geno’s 1st HR in forever and Sadek called it like a routine fly ball….I would give just about anything for the reds to come back next year with a new play-by-play TV guy

    • RedAlert

He sure did ….. noticed the same thing

  58. RedsGettingBetter

It’s the turn of Ferguson to blow the lead apparently…the two lefties hit for doubles…

  59. RedAlert

Bullpen gascan in full effect …. Just unbelievable …. 8th inning meltdown in progress AGAIN

  60. GPod

if you are a left-hander out of the BP and you can’t get lefthanders out….you are a waste of a spot in the pen

  61. RedsGettingBetter

What a problem so frustrating is this bullpen…

    • GPod

2 run lead with 6 outs to get…too much to ask this BP…same over and over ….last night was too much to ask for again

  62. RedAlert

Santillan got no business in the big leagues right now

    • WCRon

He has fallen off the cliff completely

  63. Goldenbear

Send the entire bullpen to Louisville. As we have seen with all the other players who we send to Louisville, they bat .190 here and .350 down there. Must be the water.

  64. RedsGettingBetter

Paddack and Petty are the guys who left in the bullpen I guess

  65. WCRon

It would be easier on my health if they just lost. Give by false hopes is causing major hypertension

  66. GPod

That DP by JJ was just a killer….one thing about Tito, he never does anything to try to stay out of a DP

  67. CincyDo

Santillan came in and threw 5 straight fastballs around 93-95 mph. Andujar let him get away with a meatball down the middle but the next batter made him pay. It’s just lazy ass, going with an easy pitch, the fastball. When you lose mph on fastball, you need to use other pitches more, smh.

  68. Andrew Brewer

Read it and weep … Padres 5, Reds 4

  69. GPod

how many times can you use the headline: “bullpen blows lead”

  70. RedAlert

Petty can’t pitch at this level and Reds front office hasn’t figured that out yet …PATHETIC PITCH

  71. RedsGettingBetter

Another really tough loss because the bullpen and wasted chances to score more runs…this game was absolutely winnable…the frustration will be very high

  72. Indy Red Man

Going out of business sale. 1 day only….ok actually 51 days to go. No offer will be refused

  73. RedAlert

Most atrocious bullpen in MLB … hardly any major league caliber pitchers whatsoever in that bullpen right at this moment …. Pure pitiful , dumpster fire bullpen , rudderless ship of an organization.

  74. RedAlert

Most atrocious bullpen in MLB … and it ain’t even close .

  75. Dennis Westrick

Reds with 9 LOBs and 1-6 with RISP! That’s all you need to know! That plus a BP that cannot protect a 2-run lead with 6 outs to go! Pathetic performance and another crushing loss!

  76. Dennis Westrick

Reds with 9 LOBs and 1-6 with RISP! That’s all you need to know! That plus a BP that cannot protect a 2-run lead with 6 outs to go! Pathetic! Another crushing loss!

  77. Mark Moore

To quote Dumbledore re: one of the magical candies …

    “Earwax. Disappointing.”

I personally don’t blame Petty. Game was lost the inning before with the blown save.

  78. Roger Garrett

Help me with Ferguson. He threw 6 pitches all fastballs to the first lefty and 5 more to the next lefty.I looked twice and no sliders or curves and maybe 1 was a cutter. How can that be unless he has no breaking pitches at all.If you throw the same thing over and over it will get hit.No change of speeds just same old pitch. As for Petty a cement mixer to Tatis center cut? Bounce that one dude and make him beat you with a fastball. This pen lacks any knowledge of pitching.

    • ksdavis

Who is calling the pitches though? Aren’t they being called by the dugout?

I agree. Sometimes I wonder about the pitch calling. Even Cowboy is calling out the pitch selection

  79. Roger Garrett

I know nothing about pitching or hitting or big boy baseball at all.Unless you throw 100 and I read one time big league hitters can time an airplane you don’t throw the same pitch over and over. The two lefties stayed in to bat so they couldn’t be that bad against a left pitcher to being with.Don’t even give your self a chance to win doing stuff like that.
