Brady Singer

Two weeks ago the Cardinals were in Cincinnati and Brady Singer was the scheduled starter, but the game was rained out. The Reds opted to then skip him in the rotation and he didn’t pitch against St. Louis the next day. When he returned to the mound after 13 days between starts he allowed three runs and walked four batters in 5.0 innings in a loss to Atlanta. Cincinnati hasn’t won a start of his since April 25th. Since that start Singer has allowed 19 earned runs in 22.0 innings while giving up 11 home runs.

When it comes to the splits there’s only one area where Singer is doing well and that’s walks. Neither lefties or righties are drawing walks against him. Right-handed hitters have a solid average and they are hitting for a lot of power against him while making tons of contact. Left-handed hitters are making less contact but still plenty of it, but they are hitting like prime Ted Williams without as many walks when facing him.

Kyle Leahy

While Brady Singer missed facing the Cardinals when they were in Cincinnati, Kyle Leahy faced the Reds and he gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.0 innings. That start accounted for five of the eight earned runs he gave up in his five starts in May. It was also the only game in which he allowed a home run in May and he gave up two of them that day.

The splits for Leahy this season are huge. He’s been very good against righties, holding them to a .616 OPS. Left-handed hitters, though, are crushing him. They are hitting .350, drawing plenty of walks, making a lot of contact, and showing good power against him. Not shown below in his splits is that he’s been much better in St. Louis this season where his ERA is 3.28 (5.04 on the road) and his OPS against is just .740 (.872 on the road). He’s yet to give up a home run at home this season (8 on the road). He also isn’t striking anyone out at home, with just 14 strikeouts in 122 plate appearances at Busch Stadium in 2026.

Derek Johnson takes a leave of absence

The Reds pitching coach is stepping away from the team for an undetermined amount of time. There is no reason being given as to why he is taking a leave of absence.

Assistant Pitching Coach Matt Tracy, who has been with Cincinnati since 2023 will be the guy who makes the trips out to the mound to talk things over with pitchers during the game.

We gotta start looking at these divisional contests as opportunities, Opportunities to move up ! From where we stand, what do we have to lose ? And we have everything to gain … Play the game the way it should be played ! The lineup is lookin’ good !

  2. Mark Moore

“Late” start for this old man means a relatively short leash …

Let’s Line ‘Em Up and Kick some WLB Dirty Bird Tail Through the Gateway Arch!!

  3. RedsGettingBetter

So Derek Johnson is going to IL too?
Reds need to win this game…

  4. Mark Moore

That works to get it started. I’ll avoid commenting on the challenge he should have made 😀

  5. RedsGettingBetter

    Good start by Stewart delivering…

  6. RedsGettingBetter

Geno! 0-2 count 2-out RBI single

  7. Jason T.

Glad we got some early runs with Singer starting.
Some nice 1st inning hits by Sal and Suarez.

  8. Jason T.

This MLB.tv feed is trash so far. Lots of pixelating and artifacting.

    Great play at 3rd.

    • Mark Moore

Mine is fine. I’m on the TV via the Roku box over wireless.

      • Jason T.

Hmm, must be local. Appreciate the update. I never know if it’s the broadcast or a local issue.

  9. Mark Moore

That’s the way to make up for a mistake.

  10. JB

I don’t know what the numbers are for arm strength for McLain and Arroyo but Elly just looks way ahead of both of them. Elly is so fluid and it just seems to come out of his hand like a rocket.

    • Mark Moore

I believe MattyMc grades out well, but Elly’s missile launcher is in a league of its own. I kept wanting him a 3rd and Matty at SS, but not any more.

      • JB

Yeah it’s funny how you get use to Ellys arm and then they put somebody else out there and it basically hits you in the face what an arm he has.

  11. RedsGettingBetter

Singer needs good defense to have success…. Reds playing bad defense in this first inning turns into a unearned run and the inning stay alive

  12. JB

The one angle looks like he is on top of the bag.

    • Mark Moore

Almost looked to me like Steer could have tagged the runner headed into 2nd. But I know that’s not a natural thing to do.

  13. Mark Moore

Tossed him. At least Sal backed away before he got jacked.

  14. Jedi Joey

That was garbage! His foot was on the bag. I would have got tossed as well. I’m at home and I’m fired up.

  15. RedAlert

Wow Brady Singer pitching from behind CONSTANTLY … defense doing him ZERO
    favors

    • Mark Moore

He’s not doing himself many either.

      • RedAlert

Agree 110 % … he won’t last 4 innings pitching like this … dude is pitching scared

  16. JB

Singer is to much of a veteran to let this get to him. Get Lowder back and put his lousy butt in the bullpen.

    • RedAlert

Maxwell can’t pitch at this level …. Time to move on from this guy ….. he’s had his chances … will never amount to nothing but a AAAA PITCHER

Keep promoting some other guys from
Lower levels and move em up to AAA

  17. Roger Garrett

We just can’t have a clean nice inning to start the game. Why oh why can we not?

  18. Richard Fitch

Steer probably put 2 runs on the scoreboard for St. Louis.

    • JB

That’s why he should be playing first. He is their best defensive 1st baseman and as much as people hate McLain , he is their best 2nd baseman. He has great range.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … that’s what I’m thinking. He may like the position, but I can’t say he’s at the top of my list there.

    • Jason T.

In Steer’s defense at least he’s hitting unlike McLain. Plus Steer has been solid in the field in his multitude of positions.

  19. RedsGettingBetter

It’s incredible. Singer pitched for a scoreless inning but the defense put him in trouble and he lost control suddenly. The result 2 unearned runs and he is on 34 pitches…

  20. Roger Garrett

Two errors a walk a wild pitch and 34 pitches and we worry about the pen and the bats. Can’t make this kind of stuff up and I thought the 18-3 beat down of the Cubs today was awful baseball.GOOD GRIEF

  21. Jason T.

We may need to score like 10 tonight…

    • JB

Reds are hitting Leahy hard unfortunately it’s at people.

      • Jason T.

Yeah, solid contact right at the Cardinals. Hopefully we catch some breaks.

  22. Andrew Brewer

Good to see Arroyo get his second hit in the Bigs … No runs in the second, but the Reds are in this game.

    • Jedi Joey

The Cardinal’s city connect hat looks very generic. Honestly looks like something you would see a team wearing in a slow pitch softball league.

      • JB

It is. Looks like something you would buy at the local gas station.

  23. Roger Garrett

Pen is in bad shape so to asked then to go 5 or 6 innings is not a good thing at all.

  24. Jason T.

Singer pitching like strikes are bad.

  25. RedsGettingBetter

walking Scott II makes me angry

  26. JB

That’s about 5 pitches tonight the ump has missed. It’s like the Reds are playing against 12 tonight

  27. Roger Garrett

Singer walks the 9 hole hitter that is hitting like 188 then he steals second.Singer just is not doing his job and its going to just destroy the pen tonight unless he rights the ship right now.

  28. JB

Lol Stewart catches the throw from Arroyo and looks down to make sure his foot is on the base. Like giving the ump the finger.

  29. Andrew Brewer

Good recovery in the 2nd. (No not the walk to the .188 hitting Scott II) Singer is throwing well.

  30. RedsGettingBetter

Singer is in pace to pitch just 4 innings today unless they can have quick ones…

  31. Mark Moore

Sadak – “How quickly the umpires adapted to ABS …”

Well, not all of them. Like Porter 😉

  32. Andrew Brewer

Geno gives Leahy his first K… I didn’t think he would get him. Reds put nothing across, but they will.

  33. Jedi Joey

Brady Singer giving up homers, death, and paying taxes

  34. Mark Moore

Cement mixer chest high … what would we expect?

  35. Jason T.

    Oh boy Singer…
    NL central owns the Reds.

  36. RedAlert

Done with Brady Singer … he’s pitiful …
12 million dollars flushed down the toilet.

  37. RedsFanForLife

Geno has got to be the biggest disappointment to date this season. After 60+ games, he’s on pace to hit 10-11 HRs with only 4 right now. Granted he is playing in his 38th game tonight because of injury, but it’s a far cry from the 49/118 he put up LY

  38. Mark Moore

I do believe MattyMc makes that play and throw.

    And I LOVE Steer.

  39. Hanawi

Have to expect the other team to hit at least 2 HRs off of Singer every start. Like clockwork.

  40. Roger Garrett

He is out there for 90+ pitches so lets hope it doesn’t get to far out of hand.

  41. RedsGettingBetter

Both pitchers at 67 pitches through just 3 IP…

  42. Mark A Verticchio

That one play may have changed this hole series.

  43. Dennis Westrick

Singer at 67 pitches thru only 3 innings! He’ll be lucky to make it thru 5 innings! What else is new?

  44. RedsGettingBetter

Arroyo is having better at bats tonight

    • Mark Moore

Marte is also putting it in play. That’s where it starts. Hit it. Then hit it where they ain’t.

  45. JB

Arroyo keeps having at bats like the first two and McLain is out of a job.

  46. Andrew Brewer

Another goose egg in the 4th … We know the Reds will have to score runs in this one. 3-3

  47. old-school

Great play Blake Dunn. Myers is a good outfielder. Bleday hits. There’s 3 outfielders. See what Marte can do in RF .

  48. CincyDo

Need Bleday to get going right here. Let’s go.

  49. Andrew Brewer

Singer holds ’em in the 4th… Bleday to leadoff in the Reds 5th.

  50. RedsGettingBetter

I wonder if Tito will let Singer to pitch in the 5th after 84 pitches to face the top of the Cardinals order… Paddack is available as long man…

    • Mark Moore

Freddie’s in charge. Tito is stewing in his office.

  51. Roger Garrett

Now is the time to grab the lead.Crooked number right here.GO REDS

  52. Mark Moore

So this game has me thinking about where Steer fits best. I do like him at 1B and he’s shown excellent defense there. But that means Lowe doesn’t play enough. Steer can play a respectable LF or RF, but we can’t run him out there permanently the way Bleday is hitting and until we see what Marte does this time around.

Sal is growing on me 3B (I’ve been a Hayes supporter, but I think that ship needs to stay at sea). But then where to you get Geno playing time.

Even the armchair managing is difficult with these guys. I’m glad I don’t have the real job … 😉

    • VaRedsFan

      Steer 1B
Sal 3B gives you the best defense

      Lowe has cooled off
But that mean MMC has to play.

  53. RedsGettingBetter

Reds offense is stuck after the first inning…not good at all

  54. old-school

I am a Spencer Steer fan. Warning. I was a Senzel and India fan.

But can we just admit the obvious. Steer is a quality hitter but he’s not a second baseman or 3b or RF. Stop asking him to fix Reds roster problems of the day. Reds moved off Geno 4 years ago at 3b. He’s not going to be here next year either. Benson wont. Friedl wont. Hayes wont. Lowe wont.

    Bleday LF
    Elly SS
    Stewart 3b
    Steer 1b

    Figure out CF/2b/DH/RF

That and a bullpen makeover is a lot not to mention Singer wont be here either as a SP.

Start the sorting and stop using core players like Steer and Sal to rotate all over the diamond. Make McLain or Arroyo earn 2b or trade for it. Find a CF. Make Marte earn RF. HE at least gives reasonable at bats. This roster rotation is a mess.,

    • Andrew Brewer

Steer has always been used around, and has done pretty well I think. Playing Sal at third is fine. The options arise with Lowe, and Geno playing or being DH. If Arroyo’s bat is not that good, then Steer can still play 2nd. I don’t see a big dilemma there. In fact it’s a luxury to have this much talent.

  55. Andrew Brewer

Started well but ended quickly in the 5th. Dobbins replaced Leahy on the mound.
Have to expect Singer back for the 5th. 3-3

    • Andrew Brewer

But, no, it’s Brock Burke for the Reds in the 5th !

  56. RedsFanForLife

Why Burke in the 5th? He’s a backend guy with how the rest of the bullpen is pitching. I guess there’s no faith in some of the others like Maxwell, Mey, Paddack and Santillan, all who should be currently pitching before the 7th inning.

  57. Dennis Westrick

Good job Singer! Only 4 innings, 3 walks, 3 runs and a HR!

  58. Mark Moore

I just sit here and shake my head.

  59. old-school

Little league returns on the pickoff

Probably need to sign off so Teresa can watch Lincoln Lawyer.

I postponed to watch the reds and bad decision

  60. RedAlert

And Burke’s failed pickoff cost em another one ….. can’t get out of their own way…
    giving them the game

    • Dennis Westrick

It’s something new every game! Reds have found just about every way possible to lose leads and ultimately lose the game! It’s almost comical at this point!

  61. Roger Garrett

I agree and today its get Marte and Arroyo both in the lineup so Steer comes in and plays second base.Great post OS.This mess started last year when Hayes was signed then what do we do with Marte then what do we do with Sal. etc etc.

  62. Dennis Westrick

After tonight’s loss, the Reds will be 31-31 and they will likely be below .500 when they leave St. Louis on Sunday!

    • Mark A Verticchio

Sad but true and then San Diego, this road trip may bury this team.

  63. Kevin H

No matter what happens. Umpires are responsible for two runs. That was end of first inning. Just a terrible call and not overturning the call is just as bad.

    Reds 3-2 after 5 innings… excellent

  64. RedsGettingBetter

This games started by Singer are a really struggling for the Reds…

  65. Dennis Westrick

Cubs got trounced by the Giants, Pirates lost and Brewers are losing! WAKE UP REDS!

  66. Jason T.

Even with only 1 earned run, Singer and his around 6 era this season has been garbage. Very, very disappointing season.

  67. JB

Not one time was that pitch ever in the strike zone Geno.

  68. Roger Garrett

Marte with some good at bats but nothing to show for it.

  69. Mark A Verticchio

3 in the first and they won’t score again. On a side note Suarez has been absolutely awful, no other way to put it.

  70. Gpod

There are really no words to describe what it is like to watch this offense night in and night out …it’s a sad display for a major league team

      • Gpod

I just tell it like it is….live in reality …as most people on this site can see if they are really paying attention

      • Kevin H

“Live in reality ” not sure what that means. You talked about how watching this team makes u feel. I said don’t watch.

        Pretty simple concept. *Shrugs *

    • Jason T.

They test our patience that’s for sure. What’s more alarming is the silence after the 1st inning more or less, no real scoring opportunities.

  71. RedsGettingBetter

The two unearned runs are weighing heavily on this game so far

  72. Brett

So happy Marte’s back. Man I wish we had a pen like the Cards’. What a joke. This so called club is a disgrace.

    • VaRedsFan

They lost their best 3 relievers to injury.
Were you expecting the fill ins to be equal or better?

  73. Mark Moore

I’m probably good for the 7th, but if we don’t score then it’s “iffy”. It’s not a school night, but my eyelids are getting heavy.

  74. RedsGettingBetter

Scott II gets on base only against the Reds apparently…

    • ksdavis

Well Cowboy stated that you shouldn’t be playing a 189 hitter to pull a 101 mile fast ball.

  75. Brett

Hey—- Bring in TJ, or how about trusty Marty. “We need a HEEEEEEROOOOO!!!!!

    • Brett

Matty!!!!! Brennaman COULD probably hit better than McLain.

  76. Mark Moore

    Or maybe I don’t make it to the 7th … 😮

  77. ksdavis

Terrible throw from Steer to the plate. Good thrown might have had the runner.

    • VaRedsFan

      You need to watch again.
      No chance at getting him.

  78. RedsGettingBetter

This game goes in wrong way …The team started good scoring 3 runs but an ugly first inning changed things and the offense cooled off unexpectedly… Now the bullpen is struggling again…

  79. Jason T.

Game getting ugly fast. Maxwell with the BP out there.

  80. Andrew Brewer

Bringing in Maxwell did it for me … it’s now 6-3 Cards.

  81. Mark Moore

On a different baseball related note …

I recorded “The Stratton Story” on TCM sometime over a week ago and watched it while doing my recumbent stepper thing. What a great story (Jimmy Stewart in the lead role). If you don’t know it, look it up.

Watching our relief core again made me think of it. If you know, you know.

  82. RedsFanForLife

Maxwell and Mey pitching to see who will get demoted on Sunday when Lowder gets activated

  83. Mark A Verticchio

This road trip may put this team at 31 and 36, and the season is over.

  84. Jeff Morris

This Maxwell has no idea where the ball is going…..does not throw strikes, maybe throws the fastball for strikes half the time, and ends up a hit by the other team. Reds farm system that bad, that this is all they can produce!

    • RedAlert

TimE to move on from this guy …. He will never be nothing more than a AAAA PITCHER … keep moving some boys to Louisville and clean that bullpen out down there …. Mey another one

  85. RedsGettingBetter

It’s sad to repeatedly bring in Maxwell , Santillan and others struggling guys in 1-run game only to give it up immediately because there aren’t reliable options…just frustrating

  86. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds just can’t get involved in these bull pen games.

  87. Mark Moore

And I’m out with that RBI HBP.

    Maybe tomorrow.

  88. Kevin H

So who would you all put in?? You see why Francona uses certain guys?? Do you understand Francona can only use who he has.

Someone said Francona was responsible for this mess. News flash its not On Francona!!!!

    • JB

McCambley. After the other night he should have given the shot. Not the two headed walking mobster of Maxwell and Mey. Amazing these 2 jokers are in the bigs.

  89. RedAlert

Mey can ride the same bus back to Louisville that Maxwell is on … time to cut bait with both these guys …. Neither is MLB material by a mile

  90. Jason T.

Mey, Maxwell, McLain, all suck. What’s with the M crew and their turrible ways.

  91. RedsFanForLife

Expect to see the same lineup tomorrow with Myers replacing Lowe and Higgins replacing Stephenson against the lefty. Myers in CF, Dunn in RF and Marte the DH.

  92. RedsGettingBetter

It’s obvious the Reds have far the worst bullpen in baseball right now…embarrassing

  93. Jason T.

Utter meltdown. NL central owns the Reds unfortunately.

  94. Michael B. Green

Made the mistake of turning on the game to watch 2 relievers come in and walk guys and pitch up in the zone. Game off.

  95. Jon

This fine bullpen…brought to you by Nick Krall. Eliminating peaks and valleys since 2022…

  96. RedsFanForLife

Send Maxwell down tomorrow and bring Phillips back up and send Mey down on Sunday when Lowder is activated.

      • RedsFanForLife

There’s no other reliever available unless they give the open roster spot to Misiewicz, which might not be a bad idea instead of Phillips

    • Jon

Hopefully his last ever appearance in a Reds uniform… an absolute disgrace

    • Doug Gray

Jason – Going to ask to choose your words a little better.

Calling someone trash is not acceptable.

Saying they are pitching like garbage is acceptable. This isn’t a warning for a possible suspension or anything, just a heads up on how I/we try to keep the conversation proper.

  97. Jon

If I was given this horrendous pitching staff to work with, I’d have taken a leave of absence a long time ago…

  98. Brett

Can’t wait to hear has been tired ol Tito’s excuses after this one.

  99. Kevin H

You know though calling human beings trash is unacceptable. Complain is one thing, but calling human beings trash is unacceptable

    • Jason T.

Ok. His pitching is trash. Act like a MLB and do your job. This isn’t his first rodeo. Clearly he isn’t a MLB pitcher. His pitching is trash. TRASH! Thats a completely unacceptable appearance on his part.

  100. RedAlert

The fact that the do not have any bullpen arms better than this at AAA speaks volumes about Krall /Meador and the entire scouting department … totally embarrassing … but as long as fireworks and bobbleheads are good , ownership could care less

  101. Jeff Morris

Same thing with Mey, no good at all! Looks like the Reds farm system is really that bad on pitchers!

  102. RedsGettingBetter

I haven’t seen so many 99-100 mph pitches out of the zone in only one inning until this…

  103. Goldenbear

And yet tomorrow morning, Nick Krall will wake up and survey this hot mess he has handed this city and return to work as a major league baseball General Manager. If only I could do my job this well.

    • Brian

Nick Krall is not the general manager.

  104. RedsFanForLife

Do we start to give Krall some props for the McCambley-Hinds trade?

      • RedsFanForLife

Would rather be Tito than Kelly down at Louisville. At least the FO is trying to make the Reds roster better. In the first 2 months of this season, Kelly has lost CES, Hinds, Bleday, Arroyo and Marte. Who has replaced them? Players like Hendrick, Faltine, Ascanio and Friedl. Tough to win that way

  105. Jon

Francona should be using his influence as a HOF-bound manager to call out ownership and the front office for their incompetence. What’s the worst that will happen? They fire him and pay him to leave this dumpster fire? Win-win either way…Hard to believe he came out of retirement for this…

  106. Jason T.

Stephenson and his 63 ops+ this season another major disappointment.

  107. Brian

Last year someone hired those Etsy witches for their teams in the playoffs. Do we need to do the same thing for this bullpen tomorrow? I do not remember a bullpen this bad.

  108. Doc

Maxwell and Mey should have reserved seats on the DFA bus.

    • RedAlert

To me , these dudes have exhausted their chances with this club …. Aren’t major league caliber relievers period

      • Kevin H

Agree and this goes back on the organization. Poor development, or maybe as you said. Aren’t mlb caliber players.

  109. Roger Garrett

On a positive note Arroyo has been on base 3 times and Dunn has two hits again tonight.

    • Jason T.

Nice to see some AAA standouts parlay that into some MLB success.

      • Kevin H

I apologize, I am very frustrated tonight.

I’ve seen Arroyo a bunch over the years. He’s just a good ballplayer. Super determined. I enjoy watching him.

And Dunn is not the same player they sent down. He was tasked with becoming a good table setter. Which he did.

    Cowboy: “Some semblance of hope.”

    Lol

  111. David

Wow! Zach Maxwell has an ERA of 16.20. Is that good?

Lyon Richardson was DFA’d for less, or more, or whatever.

It’s just a bottomless pit of poor pitching. The Cardinals will score some more before this one is over. Send in Santillian!

    • Kevin H

LOL, this made me laugh. “Send in Santillan

    • Doug Gray

Richardson would have been optioned back to Triple-A if they could have done that but since he was out of options they had to DFA him. Maxwell can be optioned, so that’s what he’s had done with him.

  112. JB

This team is going nowhere. They win one game and everybody quickly forgets about all the holes that this team has. No starting pitcher is getting to the 7th and because of that the bullpen has to finish up and they can’t. Everybody is fresh and they bring in Maxwell and Mey first. Them 2 should be the last out of the bullpen and if those 2 are as good as it gets out of AAA this team is seriously in trouble.

    • Kevin H

Does a day off get everyone fresh though? If you cant use Mey and Maxwell in the early innings. Then when do you use them? The bullpen has been the issue since May 1st, and sadly no trade to improve bullpen. Just back and forth with the triple A dudes.

  113. Mark A Verticchio

I think the team was going poorly and then when Elly got hurt the dam broke. Will be a long rest of the season. 90 losses or more.

  114. Jason T.

The number of bases loaded walks by Reds pitching, I think now at 19 and blowout loses by the Reds this season has been staggering. Sinking harder than the Titantic at this rate. Sad to see.

  115. Kevin H

I mentioned to a family member today. These next 12 games will make or break the reds. If they can go 9-3 or 8-4 I think they will be okay. What cant happen is going 4-8 or 3-9.

    • Mark A Verticchio

      4 and 8 would be a victory.

  116. JB

Next 12? It started against the Royals. They needed to go 4-2, 5-1 in the Royals Cardinals series. With the schedule coming up they are cooked.

  117. RedsGettingBetter

The bullpen difference. Cardinals sent Dobbins in the 5th and he has tossed 4 scoreless innings to save the rest of relievers and keep winning the game… Reds sent Burke in the same 5th inning but he allowed the inherited runner meaning the go-ahead to score before the Maxwell-Mey dúo really made a big disaster surrender 6 more runs in the 6th

    • Roger Garrett

He did but the Reds are about to go 1-4 in the least 5 games with 12 runs in those 5 games unless they score in the ninth. No excuse for the meltdown other then those 2 relievers don’t belong in the big leagues but the Reds offense is still not clicking.

  118. Kevin H

Well Mccambley looks good. Yet, dont want to jinx anything. LOL…what a crazy game and it started in 1st inning.

  119. Jeremiah

Any word on the reason for Johnson’s leave of absence? It sounds like they plan to keep him as the pitching coach when he comes back. Usually something like that is personal health issue, family member’s health, or some other serious family situation. None of our business I know, so if no other info that’s ok, I was just curious. I hope things are ok for him.

Looks like some trying times for the Reds organization potentially in the next month or so. Expectations were kind of high for this team, so going to be a hard crash if they crash. Ownership will have to decide what direction that want to take.

  120. Slicc50

    Really??? 3-0 lead……. Now losing 10-3?

  121. RedsFanForLife

Is it time to DFA Friedl? At this point, I don’t think another club will pick him up. If they do, we can get a player or cash. If nobody does, he’s back at Louisville as non roster depth or he may choose to become a FA if he’s able to. Good time to open up another roster spot as he will be non tendered in the offseason anyway.

  122. RedsGettingBetter

A 78-pitch 5-inning scoreless relief is not often seen these days… The Reds looked like an awful team tonight… Another blow loss against a division rival…I don’t know why they play bad against those teams…

    • David

They play bad because they are not a very good baseball team right now. That’s why they play bad. It’s not magic. They just lost two out of three games at home against one of the worst teams in the American League.
McCambley pitched ok, but now that he pitched +2 innings, he won’t probably be available again until Sunday. So tomorrow is going to be another shellacking by the Cardinals.

  123. Jeremiah

Singer has had basically 6 not good starts in a row. Is he having a down year, injured? He’s not giving them much chance to win with how depleted the pen is. I like Singer, surprised he’s not been good especially in a contract year. Seems kind of a negative vibe around the Reds, but maybe it’s just because they’re lacking talent/players currently.

  124. Brady

They will probably snap off 10 in a row at some point because it’s a Tito lead club and they’ve stayed afloat through this rough month and a half, but man, 20 games under .500 by the end of the year doesn’t feel super far off given the wild September schedule.

They’ve got some pieces in place for at least a few more seasons (Elly, Stewart, Burns, Greene, maybe Steer) but the depth in the minors is super thin right now. There is nothing coming for a while outside of maybe Duno, who they will hotshot because Stephenson will likely get moved at the deadline. If they want to be competitive in the next few years, theyre going to have to meaningfully invest in the free agent market and add solid contributors. This felt like more of a transitional year even coming into it, with the lockout looming and having a 40 man with a ton of “prove it” guys who worked their way out – but there is very little talent in AA and essentially nothing in AAA that is going to help this team in the next season or two. They might luck out in the lottery and get a top pick next year but even that guy is going to be a year or two away at minimum.

They’ve made some good moves the last couple of offseasons for sure, but ownership is just going to either have to pony up or clean house completely to get off of this treadmill.

  125. Rob

We are 9 games under 500 since May 1! Seriously, that is probably bottom five among the 30 teams. Krall says the organization is working very hard to stay afloat until Pagan, Greene, Johnson, etc.come back. Good to hear but I am sorry that I don’t see it. We bring up guys demoted in spring training – Dunn, Hinds, Bleday – and somehow expect that the offense will improve.?? That is laughable. We bring up Louisville’s best pitchers – Mey, Marte, Leibrandt, Maxwell, Richardson, and Petty,- and not a one has an ERA below 10! We pick up a guy on the waiver wire that 6 other worse teams didn’t want anything to do with. Sorry but to me. that doesn’t meet my definition of trying hard. I might be slightly persuaded if you did it one time but most of these guys have had 2-3 tries. As everybody on RLN knows, these guys are not going to keep the boat from sinking. Trying hard to Krall must mean exhausting your in house options.

Saw the other day that the Reds World Series odds had fallen below the Tigers, Mets, White Sox, and Pirates. Still ahead of the rebuilding Cardinals though but that may not last. I think we broke into bottom 10 territory. But rest comfortably because the GM says he is trying really hard and making calls. If he is expecting a few dynamos to come in because we are offering up the 3 M bullpen boys from Louisville or our 185 hitters, I don’t think that will happen. I think it is more likely that he will watch the ship sink without doing anything.

    • Robin

Agree. I think dogging the players is futile. Yes Krall has some shortcomings. But we need a bullpen coach and a batting coach very badly. Even I can watch a bullpen and see that this guy or that guy is not on today. Relief pitchers are fickle, sometimes on sometimes off. But they need to throw strikes. The reds hitters take way too many good strikes. Especially EDLC on the first pitch and the third strike. I just don’t get that. And it seems to me when you are losing the game You don’t swing at anything, but you gotta figure out how to put the ball in play and make something happen. I see the pitchers giving way too many free passes and the hitters taking way too many good pitches.
