After being rained out on Friday the Reds and Cardinals had to play a doubleheader on Saturday. St. Louis grabbed a victory in the afternoon and then Cincinnati took the night cap. After 20 innings of baseball the two are back at Great American Ball Park Sunday afternoon where the winner of the game gets the series victory.

The game has been postponed.

This contest will be made up on Monday, August 17th at 1:40pm ET. It will be a part of a day/night doubleheader with the second game being played at 6:40pm ET.

Brady Singer

The 2026 season for Singer has been very inconsistent. He’s had a few strong starts but most of his starts have seen him struggle. In three of his four starts in May he’s failed to pitch into the 5th inning. His last time out he gave up five runs in 4.0 innings to Cleveland. Cincinnati has lost all four of his starts this month.

Right-handed hitters are hitting for a solid average against him, but are showing a lot of power when they do get hits. They are making tons of contact against him, too. Lefties are hitting like Ted Williams against him, but without as many walks.

Brycen Mautz

The Cardinals are calling up Mautz today for his big league debut. The 2nd round pick in 2022 has spent his season in Triple-A Memphis where he’s kept runs off of the board at a good clip. He’s started nine games there this season but he’s only topped eighty pitches in five starts and never topped 85 in 2026. He’s given up two runs or fewer in eight of his nine outings, but has only thrown 5.0 innings or more in four starts.

The splits against Mautz in Triple-A are pretty big. Left-handed hitters have found little success against the lefty, hitting for a very low average and showing no power. They have walked at a good rate against him, though. Right-handed hitters aren’t hitting much, either, but they are hitting much better than lefties. They are walking at a high rate and are making plenty of contact against him.

News and Notes

Big performance from 2025’s 1st round pick

Out in Arizona on Saturday the Reds 2025 1st round pick, Steele Hall, had a 3-hit day for the ACL Reds in a blowout win. The 18-year-old shortstop is hitting .327/.465/.691 this season. In that same game Ryjeteri Merite, a 20-year-old lefty, struck out 11 batters. Over at RedsMinorLeagues.com we wrote a little more about each guy if you wanted to check that out.

“First pitch is scheduled for 1:40pm ET, but the weather may not play along for that one.” Doug Gray

I agree. Radar looks like rain until 5. I wonder if they stick around until then.

The game will not begin on time. We will provide updates when they become available.

For those of you who like math, and who doesn’t, the box score from last night’s Reds extra-inning win revealed the following: Reds had 38 ABs which included 10 hits and 5 walks. Sounds good, right? Not entirely! Most noteworthy were the 16 SOs. Since the Reds won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning with one out, they recorded a total of 31 outs.

My point is that of the 31 outs, 16 were via strikeouts! That means over 50% of the outs were outs made without putting the ball in play! FWIW, the Cards had 6 SOs.

Happy for the win and twin bill split but the Reds have simply got to get better in putting the ball in play! Especially with RISP! And can we limit the GIDPs, please! (Yes, you Ty Steve!)

Need Singer to throw a Zinger! No HRs and limit the walks, please! Go Reds! Win the game today and take the series!

      @Dennis

People losing their minds Rece Hinds DFA’d but you cant take the stripes off a tiger . Hinds struck out 28x last 2 seasons and was 2-47 against lefties. In MLB. Thats unplayable. CES was a badball hitter in the minors. Unless you have Elly skillset or prime Geno 40-50 HR ……k rates matter under Tito and Reds are prioritizing bat to ball skills

Catchers dont count in the equation

See what this new nucleus of Dunn steer elly Sal Lowe Geno Bleday and Myers can do. Benson and Friedl arent providing anything but while Marte and Arroyo are very close…. They need to play everyday when they are called up and reds desperately need a lead off cf so reasonable to give Dunn a shot with Myers a regular in the of mix

That said…. Its pitching pitching pitching . Bullpen is in disarray and yesterday was the first game the Reds won since April when burns or Abbott wasnt the starter. Thats impossible

      • Roger Garrett

I agree and as long as we don’t have 3 or players in the lineup that can’t hit it is ok.You can hide MM and the catcher but you can’t hide them and Benson and Friedl in the same lineup together. They won yesterday with late help from Myers and Steer. As you have said Marte is one of the 13 best hitters and for me I bring him up and stick him in the outfield and move Steer to second base and don’t even blink. No I do not throw MM away and yes Steer is not as good as MM at second base but you add Marte over MM as a hitter.I get it Marte has things to work on but after over 800 at bats since surgery so does MM.Reds can move Steer around and get MM some at bats.Geno will need a break as will Lowe and others but Marte plays every day.Dunn is the starter in center and Benson has to go if the Reds believe in Friedl at all.If not both go .Greene and Lowder return and all stay healthy, the starters will give them a chance to win every night.Pen is awful but for me right or wrong and its based on stuff then Ask and Burke close until one wins the job. Both throw high 90’s and Tiger in the low 90’s has had his chances.Reds won 7-6 and they must win games with offense until the pitching catches up and it will.GO REDS

On the other hand, a K is better than a DP, unless a runner scores on the DP. Why is a K worse than a weak ground ball or popup?

      • Tomn

        I meant is a K NOT better than a DP…?

      • greenmtred

Because when the ball is put in play, there’s a chance the other team boots it or makes a bad throw, etc.

      • Tomn

Duh, below please ignore the comment. A K IS better than a DP. Half asleep.

    • SteveAReno

A good way to put the ball in play is to just bunt. We do it far too rarely for our swing and the miss-the-ball kind of team.

Thinking about a probable postponement and how this would affect the Reds…the starting rotation would be moved one spot so Singer would start in NY tomorrow followed by Lodolo and Burns. Against Atlanta the scheduled pitchers would be Abbott-Paddack-Singer…The bullpen would get an off-day after being taxed yesterday…All of this seems to be not bad …BTW How is Rhett Lowder progressing?

    • doofus

I saw Lowder in the dugout on Wednesday in Philly. I guess he is scheduled to throw bullpens.

  5. Jeremiah

They should postpone this one in my opinion. The only thing is the next time the Cardinals are in town they play 4 games in a row at home, so would be a little hard to have a day night double header during a 4 games series, 5 games in 4 days. Memorial Day weekend, lot of people on vacation, I would not want to sit around for 3-4 hours at GABP waiting on rain.

  6. GPod

If there is a rainout today, can’t they just skip Singer…that would be my wish

    • Dennis Schiavone

      @gpod. Nice call. Done deal

  7. Mark Moore

Radar view suggests an evening game at best. I know they hate to cancel.

    • greenmtred

Jim Day said–I think–that both teams have to travel and are playing day games tomorrow, so that might mitigate against an evening game today.

      • doofus

Reds are in ny to play the Mets, 410p start. Birds in Mil for 210p start.

  8. Old-school

Reds have an off day thursday and weather clears up late afternoon
Get this game in and get a W

Send the cards off licking their wounds as they face the brewers and cubs next 6

Time to start sorting and moving in NL central

  9. LDS

Mautz is a monster. That effective and rarely topping EIGHT pitches a game? Still like to see Lowe in the lineup. Though he hasn’t faced much LH pitching this year, his career split line is respectable. McLain’s career splits are slightly better, but that’s largely a function of his rookie season. He hasn’t hit lefties much these last two years. Lowe has had a couple of bad years against LH’ers, but most has hit them respectably.

      • CincyDo

The butcher. We can use him to chop up the birds for dinner

    • greenmtred

      Diplomatically done, LDS. Kudos.

  10. Brian

The Cubs just put Edward Cabrera on the injured list with a blister. Should they fire their training staff? The pitching coach? Maybe Jed Hoyer?

    • greenmtred

It would be easier–and perfectly appropriate– to just disband the team.

    • doofus

Definitely yes. Those darn trainers have done it again!

    • Justin T

Anything make you happy? Never seen strangers random comments raise someones blood pressure so much.

  11. Indy Red Man

Fan Duel has 2:41, but they also had 2:10? Idk?

Took both teams to score 3+. Also parlayed both teams 3+ & Josef Newgarden top 3 at Indy. He’s moved way up to 5th so I have a good chance. $25 pays $144

    • JB

That’s going to be a long 5 game series.

    • RedsGettingBetter

      This was a 1-1 homestand…

      • Dennis Schiavone

2 games out of wild card and we are somewhat not playing great balll. Not such a bad position to be in until the FO gets their stuff together

  12. RedsGettingBetter

Now Singer and his catcher should discard the plan on how to face the Cards hitters and focus to a new one about Mets hitters…Singer had the advantage for today of having seen the Cards last two games so that could give a bit better idea how to pitch to them but he is probably heading to Lodolo and the scouting staff to get info about the Mets

  13. CI3J

Not mad about this. Bleday has been scuffling a bit lately and needs a day off. Don’t know why Tito doesn’t see it.

I hope he rests him tomorrow in New York too. Then let him come back on Tuesday.

  14. Rob

The Mets are bad and the Braves are good. Probably will be 3-3 for the week.
