Chase Burns

In three of his four starts he’s been outstanding, allowing zero or one run in those starts. His outing on April 10th saw him allow five runs in 5.1 innings to the Angels. Despite his three strong starts, he has only picked up one win because the Reds have only scored six total runs across his four starts.

Over the limited action he’s had in his big league career the platoon splits against him have been large. Right-handed hitters have struggled to do much of anything against him. Left-handed hitters, though, have found plenty of success and teams send more lefties to the plate against him than they do righties. They are hitting for a solid average, they walk a lot, and they hit for plenty of power against him.

Steven Matz

The first start of the season wasn’t great as he allowed four runs in 5.0 innings against St. Louis in a game Tampa Bay won. Since then he’s allowed five total runs in 16.1 innings. The Rays have won each of those games, too.

A former start who turned into a reliever in 2024, the Rays have put Matz back into the rotation. That means that his splits are a lot less useful than they would be for a guy who had been starting. Still, he threw 55.0 innings last season and that’s not nothing. Lefties did very little against him despite making contact often. Right-handed hitters hit for a high average, but like lefties they almost never walk. Righties showed solid power against him.

Beating the winning clubs

From the Reds game notes today: The Reds own a Major League-best 12-2 record this season against opponents entering play with a .500 or better winning percentage (minimum 4 games).

Did you know?

Sal Stewart is tied with Elly De La Cruz for the team lead in stolen bases. Stewart, unlike De La Cruz, has not been caught stealing this season. The Reds rookie is currently leading the National League in home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage, and OPS.

“The Reds rookie is currently leading the National League in home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage, and OPS.”

He’s 35th in BA @ .289. If he gets that up, which he is capable of doing, he’ll be going for the Triple Crown. Pretty cool.

    Let’s win again.

    • TR

It seems the Reds have a candidate to be a consistent .300 hitter.

  2. CI3J

Very strange that of all the 13-9 teams, Pittsburgh is given the best shot to make the playoffs (if just barely).

Also strange that their percentage is more than double the Reds’.

    • JB

I believe that is the highest fan graphs had been all year. Fangraphs has never been a big fan of the Reds.

  3. JB

The Reds and Sabres!! Going to be a great night. Well I hope.

  4. Jason T.

Love watching Burns pitch and continue to mature on the mound.
Hoping Myers can do some damage in the leadoff spot.
    Go reds!

  5. Dennis Westrick

Hey all you RLN junkies! Anybody else been to Tropicana Field? Let me know please!
I am going to make the 3-hour trip from my home on the northeast side Orlando for what will be a win and a 3-game sweep of the Rays!

    • Dennis Westrick

      Tomorrow afternoon’s game obviously!

    • SR

I was there yesterday. Nice park, for a dome. Lower attendance so access in and out was easier. The say the dome only has one layer as opposed to two on the prior one.
Lots of Reds fans out on Monday.

    • Dennis Schiavone

Trop is damaged from Hurricane 2 years ago. They play in Tampa at the Yankees AAA facility. Great atmosphere Attended yesterdays game

      • Brian

What game did you go to yesterday because the Reds and Rays are playing at Tropicana Field. We all watched it and it was not at the Yankees AAA facility, which is in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

  6. RedsGettingBetter

Well, I have the Reds 8-2 against .500 or better mark teams, maybe the “minimum 4 games” that I don’t get it is the difference…
If I am not wrong Steven Matz always has pitched well against Reds through his career hope that won’t happen tonight…
I don’t remember if Reds were 7 games above .500 mark sometime last year…I know they had it during July 2003 …

  7. Jim Walker

This is a big night for Hinds watching. His MLB career wRC+ versus right-handed pitching (71 PA) is 144 (100 = league average); but, his career wRC+ versus left-handed pitching (41 PA) is a beyond dismal -37.

Tonight, Tampa is starting an LHP, and Hinds is in the lineup. He needs to start improving this terrible reverse split.

    • Wayne Nabors

The deck is already stacked against hinds by batting him in front of hayes, most likely will not get anything to hit

      • Dennis Westrick

But KBH got a hit last night to raise his BA to a robust .071. I obviously agree with you on Hinds likely not seeing any good pitches to hit!

      • Jim Walker

Hinds MLB career K rate versus LHP is 51%. In his defense, he faced several top-tier lefties when he was swamped last year and in 2024.

Now, he needs to run some counts like last night when he ran 3 full counts resulting in a K, a ground out, and an RBI double, and get the ball into play or draw a walk as first steps.

        .

      • LarkinPhillips

While selfishly I wish Tito would flip Rece and Stephenson to give Rece a bit of help, at the end of the day it’s the big leagues and Rece has to make the adjustment and succeed. No excuses for who is behind him or anything else. I really hope he does because I really like to root for him.

      • greenmtred

We’ll see. But I bet that he’ll see breaking stuff, and he’d see that no matter who followed him in the order.

  8. Dennis Westrick

This is one of those games where I wish the Reds could have banked a couple of runs from last night! Burns hasn’t gotten a lot of run support, and the Reds are facing a tough lefty which has been their Kryptonite in seasons past!

As always, let’s score early and let Burns be great!

    Go Reds! Just keep winning!

    • Wayne Nabors

Jim i haven’t counted but I do believe he’s had several full counts in just a week, most of them would have been a walk had he not swung at balls, not defending him just see what I see

      • Jim Walker

Hinds’ overall MLB K rate for 2026 is down to 35%. Considering how poorly he did in the series versus the Giants, that is good progress when it is factored in that over the last 3 games, he has driven in 5 runs and scored another run after reaching base, all in leverage situations.

It started with him seeing more pitches per PA, even if it took several games to show results. That’s how I see it.

  9. Mark Moore

I had it on mute … what did Geno say to Jim Day?

  10. Goldenbear

I faintly remember Matz giving the Reds some problems around 10 years ago when he pitched for the Mets. Seems like he should be older than 34. Hope they do better than they usually do against lefties.

    • VaRedsFan

      Back when pitchers batted…
He had a bunch of hits against them I believe.

  11. Mark Moore

Settled in for the duration. Keep Jobu sober and the bats active, Boyz!

  12. Melvin

Maybe EDLC should bat all RH instead of all LH. haha Just kidding. Good job. 🙂

  13. Indy Red Man

Wow. You don’t see oppo bombs in their dome that often. Looks like his issues batting righty might be over!

  14. Melvin

Smart Salbert Salvotto with another steal. 🙂

  15. Klugo

Let’s flip that run diff to the right side today.

  16. Mark Moore

Good start. Takes some discipline not to challenge some of those calls. But it is the 1st inning, so I say go with the strategy.

  17. RedsGettingBetter

It’s interesting how Burns will handle this early lead… Should avoid to walk guys

  18. Indy Red Man

Had to take the Reds today. 19 for 42 off Matz with this lineup coming in

  19. VaRedsFan

This particular lineup is hitting .435 lifetime against Matz

    • greenmtred

Somehow I knew he was going to hit that. Didn’t surprise me at all.

    • Andrew Brewer

and it’s Back to Back with Myers having one of his own !

  20. RedsGettingBetter

Oppo homer by Hayesss…end of the world…

    • CLTRedsFan

Ice Storm forecasted for Hades tonight!!

  21. Melvin

Hayes with an opposite field HR? Keeps that up it’ll move the defense back. 🙂

  22. greenmtred

Too bad the lead-off hitter follows KBH: imagine how well he’d hit if Sal followed him.

  23. Indy Red Man

3-8 with a HR coming in….that ought to buy til 2028

  24. RedlegScott

Can’t help but wonder how long Matz is going to last?

  25. Gusnwally

I hear a choir in the distance singing hallelujah.hallelujah

  26. Melvin

Starting to like our chances tonight. 🙂 This is starting to have a little bit of 1990 feel.

  27. Dennis Westrick

    What’s next? An alien invasion?

  28. Mark Moore

Chase is probably confused with this much run support. Time to take care of business.

  29. Jeremiah

Boy, Reds looking good. If they get more consistent Offense outside of the 3-5 hitters like tonight they could be really good, 90-95 type of win team I think.

  30. VaRedsFan

    In regards to GoldeBear above.

Matz MLB debut was 2015 vs the Reds
    7.1 innings 2 ER
3-3 at the plate 4 RBIs

  31. VaRedsFan

Great throw by Ty and tag by Elly.
    Mullins just beat it.

  32. Indy Red Man

Myers has done alot for his limited time so far. One walk-off and another late game-winner. Up to .382 obp now. Could be a more well rounded Phillip Ervin

    • CenTexRed

      Interesting comp with Ervin.

      I’d forgotten about him.

You’re right, Meyers likely has more going for him.

You get a sende he’s playing for a job, which I never really got from PE, despite all the skills.

      • Jeremiah

Jacob Brumfield came to my mind for some reason too!

  33. CenTexRed

Some pretty nasty sliders from Burns.

Fun to see opposing hitters flail at those for a change.

  34. Jason T.

Nice recovery there Chase. Love the back to back strikeouts.

  35. Melvin

Tuesdays With Tito now in live game. haha

  36. Indy Red Man

Has Chase popped 100 yet this year? Slider is so good that 97-98 is more then enough, but you’re talking Cy Young stuff with 100-101. Thats like DeGrom before he started getting hurt/old

    • Jason T.

Yes. He was 101 in his first start. 100 multiple times that game too.

  37. Tom Reeves

While I still struggle with Sadek’s incessant hammering, I really like how the broadcast team feels more like part of the Reds team.

  38. Optimist

The halcyon days are here, good times abound, sowing now to reap later – sometimes regressing to the mean appears as dramatic improvement!

  39. RedsGettingBetter

Matz is totally spread outside the strike zone

  40. Mark Moore

Oh Rece … if ever there was a moment.

And you get a shot at redemption … and everyone knew what he was throwing you.

    • clammy

yeah, that first fastball he took, then he just couldn’t lay off the same pitch, even w/ an extra strike.

    • greenmtred

He was too honorable to profit from the terrible call.

  41. BCMurph

Just getting on board with Reds game. Woo hoo, great start!

How did Hayes’ HR look? Did it have good exit velocity as more of line drive? Hopefully, now this will be his hitting groove start! Obviously hit well enough to leave the park, but curious how quickly it exited.

One comment…. I would really like to see
Bleday up really soon and send Benson or Friedl down. Not sure which.
The Reds only have him on a one year
contract and I believe he could be positive help to the offense.

    • Jeremiah

It was a hard hit line drive, not much height. Nice hitting by Hayes on that one. Matz serving it up a bit tonight with the Fastball.

      • BCMurph

Thanks Jeremiah, hoping to hear that!

    • Mark Moore

TJ isn’t going down … possibly a trade but I doubt that very much.

Can’t remember if Benson has an option left.

      • BCMurph

        Thanks Mark, on Hayes HR.

I will agree that TJ not likely to go down. I don’t know if Benson has any options left
either. I just want Bleday to get his chance to perform and he has certainly done well enough to merit a chance, especially if Benson or McClain still under perform.

    • Tom Reeves

Frankly, it was an opposite field line drive HR.

I hope it’s a sign of regression to mean.

Because BABIP has been mean to him.

  42. RedsGettingBetter

Hinds wasted a pretty nice chance to open this game…He chased many pitches after Matz was obviously with no control

  43. LarkinPhillips

Terrible AB from Hinds. He has to get more patient. And start hitting the ball middle oppo rather than pulling everything.

  44. Indy Red Man

Being a Hinds fan is pretty frustrating. Takes fastball down the middle for 0-1 then Ks on garbage offspeed….again. Be.ready.to.hit.the.ball. Look for location if you can’t guess right

  45. CenTexRed

    Miserable, regressive AB for Hinds.

    Last night he looked solid

One step up, one step back.

    Stick with him for awhile.

Maybe swap him and McLain in the order?

  46. Jeremiah

This one not over yet. Would have been nice to get a few more runs last inning and I think it would have been about over. But hopefully Burns can have some quick innings.

    • greenmtred

Our general euphoria may have jinxed it.

      • greenmtred

But Burns may have undone the jinx. If we were a bit more lugubrious in our commenting, these jinxes wouldn’t be an issue.

  47. Jeremiah

Power hitters coming up for the Reds here! Hayes, Myers

  48. RedsGettingBetter

Burns has a high pitching count at 61 through 3 IP. Much traffic…

  49. RedlegScott

Burns looking good. Let’s get some more

  50. Indy Red Man

Sal would’ve tagged and went to 2nd. Smartest baserunner already

  51. Jason T.

Watching McLain bat is about as exciting as getting a root canal.

    • Indy Red Man

Should’ve sent him down last year. Let him reset. Stewie 2nd Steer 1B and it gives Lowe some time. It also gets Bleday in the OF replacing Steer. Bleday has tremendous pop and can help us out

      • Jason T.

Absolutely should have sent him down. Give a chance to reset and work on things in a less pressure situation.
I’m all for Stewart sliding to play 2nd.

  52. Chris

Before the month is over Hayes will have a better BA than McLain.

  53. CenTexRed

While we’re roasting Hinds and McLain, it’s worth noting that that was also a weak, weak AB from EDLC.

The guy can crush it, and other times just mail it in.

    • Jeremiah

I agree, sometimes it looks like Elly is just kind of lollygagging at at-bats even after a really good at-bat.

  54. RedsGettingBetter

    A quick inning by Burns…That was needed…

  55. RedlegScott

Just what Burns needed – get out of the inning with under 10 pitches.

  56. Pharmer85

Eight pitch inning for Burns. Needed it.

  57. SR

2 change ups from chase through 69 pitches. He really needs to show a third pitch.

    • RedlegScott

He has an opportunity to practice it right here with a five-run lead.

  58. greenmtred

Watching Sal foul off pitches reminds me of Joey.

  59. greenmtred

Rumors of Steer’s demise were premature.

  60. Mark Moore

    Timed that one well …

    Another 2-out run.

  61. VaRedsFan

Spence is heating up over the last week.

    • old-school

OPS is now a respectable .722

On pace for 20+ homers again. Steer isnt going anywhere.

    • Andrew Brewer

4 homeruns in 5 innings… this is not last years team.

  62. RedlegScott

Jax has good stuff, but he didn’t fool Steer.

  63. Jeremiah

Steer on track for another 20-25 Homer season. If he improves just a little Offensively this year would be big for the lineup.

  64. Hanginwithem

Burns pitching with a nice pace and confidence tonight. DJ’s star pupil.

  65. Jason T.

Chase, I’m signing up for this every 5 days all day long. Excellent inning again.

  66. Indy Red Man

Steer is firmly in the average camp for OF so far this year. 2B is only .687 and 1B is listed .720-.740. Steer/Stewart would put the Reds ahead of schedule there. McLain needs to hit or go down. KBH contract wise will hang around, but I would consider platoon with Geno sliding over some. Lowe is a bat and so is Bleday. You could send McLain/MM down for Bleday/Arroyo too

  67. old-school

Burns a couple pitch efficient innings to get back on pace for an outing. These young pitchers are getting it done. Give DJ credit.

    • Jason T.

DJ has been fantastic since he got to Cincy. He deserves a lot of credit.

  68. SR

2 change ups out of 9 that inning. If I knew all I had to do was ask nicely…….

    • VaRedsFan

It’s a really good pitch for him.

  69. VaRedsFan

    KBH’s OBP is skyrocketing tonight!

  70. Andrew Brewer

Last two pitches to Hayes were balls and called strikes, and still the Reds batters are not using the challenge … gotta get it right !

    • Andrew Brewer

Ah, there was a challenge, and Hayes is now on first !

  71. CenTexRed

Time to sit Mr. Hinds for a game or two.

    • Andrew Brewer

He’s up there swinging wild !

    • Indy Red Man

I think Nick Mart goes tomorrow and he doesn’t really have a good slider. Idk? Hines will test your patience. He could make a monk scream out

  72. RedsGettingBetter

Good challenge did by Hayes…Good game by him

  73. old-school

For those of us who watched 1990….this is starting to feel like April 1990.

    Reds are en fuego!

    • Oldtimer

33-12 first 45 games that season. 58-59 next 117 games. Then 8-2 in 10 postseason games.

      I had similar thoughts today.

  74. Andrew Brewer

McLain comes thru with another dbl today … Reds put another run on the Board ! 6-0 and Elly at the plate with men on 2nd and 3rd.

    • Andrew Brewer

And now Sal Stewart does more damage driving in 2, 9-0 Redlegs !

    • CenTexRed

You’re not going to start doing your play-by-play thing again, are you?

    • Matt McWax

Beautiful move, will be on the highlight rotation.

      • Jason T.

As it should be! That was beautiful to watch.

  75. VaRedsFan

Neo would be proud of that move by Myers.

  76. Gusnwally

How about KBH getting on with a challenge, then coming around to score. Happy for him.

    • Matt McWax

He’s had a lot of bad luck so far. Also, he could’ve challenged the prior pitch too.

  77. Indy Red Man

Methodical and effective like a good offense. Geno, Stephenson, and Hinds only ones left out. KBH dribbler last night got him going a little maybe

  78. Pharmer85

Would not have pitched to Sal with a base open. Glad they did

  79. CenTexRed

Stewart at 3-0, 1st base open, why pitch to him?

  80. Melvin

Time to get EDLC out of the game for a break.

  81. Jeremiah

Wow, incredible athletic move by Myers. Feel a little bad for the Rays Catcher. Reminds me of playing junior high basketball when a more athletic player would just jump over me for a rebound.

    • CenTexRed

      Never call a jinx over.

That’s a jinx in and of itself.

We’ve all seen the Reds blow 9 run leads before…..

    • greenmtred

I actually typed a retraction of my comment, saw that it was all caps and deleted it. But you’re right. I was in dangerous territory.

  82. RedlegScott

Where’s Melvin? Hinds not making us look good tonight.

    • Jason T.

I’ll take it with 9 runs scored though!

    • Melvin

Giving up on him is not a good idea. He virtually always comes back stronger.

      • RedlegScott

Time for you to call him and have another chat with him.

  83. Old-school

    Braves lost their closer Iglesias
    Dodgers lost Diaz for months
    Sonny gray to the IL

Phillies and Mets in free fall.

1990 Reds opened it up in April. Go 20-10 and blow this up early.

    • Tom Diesman

Former Reds Christian Roa and Casey Legumina DFAd today also.

    • Oldtimer

1990 Reds were 18-6 after 24 games. 2026 Reds look to be 16-8 after the same number of games.

  84. Indy Red Man

Arroyo 2-2 with a double & steal. Bleday 1-1 with a walk. Took Over 9.5 there too….5-0 Bats early

  85. Indy Red Man

Hit or K….Hinds is their best defensive RFer so if the KBH rule applies they both are in the Reds lineup for many years

    • Jason T.

Same goes with McLain. He’s been given every opportunity so should Hinds.

    • AllTheHype

KBH was best in MLB at his position in 2025 and 3rd most valuable defender (all positions) according to Statcast (OAA).

No other Reds player is anywhere near his league in terms of defensive value.

So your argument falls flat on that.

  86. BCMurph

Looking good! Reds are now sitting at a +6 with RF vs. RA. Keep it going Reds!

  87. Noyes

Never would have guessed Tampa as the Reds’ best home-away-from-home crowd. It makes sense though.

  88. Jeremiah

Reds 7th in HRs in NL, and 6th in Walks. Maybe that’s where their strength lies this year Offensively.

  89. Dennis Westrick

I’m waiting for Invasion of the Body Snatchers to begin! When was the last time the Reds cored 9 runs?

  90. Jeremiah

Yikes, boy that looks like that would hurt Hinds getting hit like that.

  91. RedlegScott

I’m liking Myers in that lead off role.

  92. RedsGettingBetter

Myers has walked three times tonight…

  93. Mark Moore

Looks like a line drive in the box score …

  94. Gusnwally

Can you tell I benched Matty MC in my fantasy league.

  95. greenmtred

As CTR noted, the jinx is still there, but the score is 11-2.

    • CenTexRed

I know it’s counter-cultural, but two things can be true at the same time.

      Thankfully, the bullpen has improved.

  96. RedlegScott

Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come for our offense.

  97. SR

The Rays are going to have a tired BP tomorrow.

    • Dennis Westrick

The Rays had a tired BP coming into this series thanks to their 13-inning game against the Pirates on Saturday!

  98. RedsGettingBetter

Would Nicholas come for the rest of the game?

  99. Dennis Westrick

The Rays had a tired BP coming into this series thanks to their 13-inning game against the Pirates on Saturday!

  100. Indy Red Man

Greetings from the Humungus — the Lord Humungus! The warrior of the wasteland, the ayatollah of rock and roll-ah!

The Reds are now Road Warriors. Who would’ve thunk it

  101. RedsGettingBetter

    Brewers ahead 12-1 8th
    Cards ahead 5-1 8th
    Cubs lead 1-0 5th
    Pirates trail 1-2 5th

    Incredible …

  102. Oldtimer

Off topic. OTD 1966 Cubs trade veteran SP Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl for young prospects OF Adolfo Phillips, P Ferguson Jenkins, and 1B John Herrnstein.

Buhl and Jackson were out of MLB by 1968. Ferguson Jenkins was on his way to HOF.

    • Mark Moore

Baseball is a funny game …

Thanks for the trivia moment, OT.

  103. RedsGettingBetter

    Elly having 2-homer game!!

  104. Jason T.

Again, right handed hitting Elly can hit!

  105. Mark Moore

    Complete MOON SHOT!!!

    Smart move to bat righty.

    • CenTexRed

      8 rbis from the 3 + 4 hitters.

Can’t recall last time I saw that.

      Somebody here will remember.

Is Stewart helping EDLC see better pitches, as dreamed?

  106. RedlegScott

Rays send out a crash car dummy to pitch? Ok by me.

  107. Optimist

We lent them a pitcher to finish the game? B Williamson? Intramural rec league!

  108. RedlegScott

Time to lower that ERA, Nicolas.

  109. Jeremiah

When’s the last time the Reds had their middle of the order hitters, De La Cruz, Stewart with these kind of stats? Maybe Bruce, Votto?

  110. Mark Moore

What a game, friends. I think I can safely shut down the laptop now.

We’ll see how much of tomorrow’s Titanic Battle I can catch with the sound on in my office.

    • Dennis Westrick

I will be posting from Tropicana Field tomorrow afternoon as I am playing hooky from work and driving over from Orlando.

      • Dennis Schiavone

No you should be driving to Steinbrenner field where the AAA Yankees Play. Rays play there. No roof. Great atmosphere

      • Frank

Dennis are you posting from the year 2025? The Rays are playing at Tropicana Field. We have all watched the last two games in the dome.

  111. Jason T.

Nicolas comes in with a 10-run lead and can’t throw strikes. Amazing.

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! He’s not endearing himself to Tito or the pitching coach!

      • RedlegScott

He’s certainly not endearing himself to you, Dennis. Lol

      • CenTexRed

        Remember: “Walks don’t matter!”

  112. Optimist

He still slots ahead of Mey and Maxwell, but with Ferguson and Lodolo to return soon, perhaps a little work in Louisville will be helpful. He had no spring training.

  113. Dennis Westrick

Yep! He’s not endearing himself to Tito or the pitching coach!

  114. RedsGettingBetter

Incredible… Nicholas is going to prepare his suitcase and go to Iowa this week where the Bats are playnig…

  115. CenTexRed

    Some seriously bad pitching there.

  116. RedsGettingBetter

Reds win! again.. 5th straight victory. The power exploded today… very good discipline taking many good at-bats resulting in 10 walks..

  117. jessecuster44

team is Red hot. amazing. so much fun. Go Reds!

And Elly is healthy and doing damage!!!

  118. LarkinPhillips

Not only did Nicolas walk 5 people, but the bloop double he didn’t back up home for the throw. I would be surprised if he is still with the team come Friday.

    • Dennis Westrick

I’m glad someone else commented about the 9th inning walks! Every time I comment on walks by Reds pitchers I get scorched on this site!

      • Dennis Schiavone

Dennis you are not going to the strip tomorrow

      • Kevin H

Dont worry about it. I myself find it amusing and entertaining.

    • BK

Yep. Melvin needs to drive him back to Louisville; no pizza, no ice cream either!
