News and Notes
ESPN ranks the Reds 18th in their Power Rankings
Having the team 18th doesn’t sound great, and realistically it’s not. But four different “experts” chimed in on different topics around the team and they all had nice things to say about someone on the club.
Two roster moves
This actually happened yesterday and it’s not surprising to anyone who has been paying any attention, but the Reds did make the moves official. Nathaniel Lowe was added to the 40-man roster and Hunter Greene was moved to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Lowe.
The medical staff….
The Reds medical staff is often the ire of many fans. And honestly that’s the case for just about every team’s medical staff – the fans think they are all bad at their job. Every so often that is warranted. But something showed up today that makes everyone else look like the smartest people that ever lived. Real Madrid’s soccer medical staff did an exam on the knee of Kylian Mbappe back in December and they misdiagnosed the injury. How did they do that? They performed an MRI on the non-injured knee (Free read from The Athletic). Mbappe makes $16.2M a year in salary, but he also got a signing bonus of $162,000,000 for his 5-year deal.

Thank God Hayes is batting last, not second like yesterday. Go to see Matt back in the lineup.
He drove in the Reds’ only run yesterday and had the team’s hardest hit ball.
Also had the worst wRC+ of any qualified MLB player last year
I think he should bat last, too. Just funnin’ you.
Almost the opening day lineup – Marte in RF, Steer to LF, Benson a platoon/defensive move.
Just an update on my MLB subscription in case it helps anyone as I know it’s different for a lot of people. I did indeed need to subscribe to the MLB Reds regional package for $99.99 since I live in Indy. Today was the first day T Mobile offered their free MLB package valued at $149.99 which I singed up for. That package did not include the Reds regional subscription as I hoped it would. However the good news is that I can use both subscriptions on the same account without having to log in and out in two separate accounts which I was informed that I needed to do a couple of months ago. As a side note an extra benefit that I didn’t know about last year is that the games are archived up to two years and I can go back and watch any time.
This is much better than Fubo this year. Last year I watched Reds games on there for free with a subscription. This year they want to charge me $29.99 per month for MLB plus $14.99 per month for a regional package which doesn’t even cover Reds home games.
What it all comes down to is that I can watch everything I was able to watch last year for $99.99 more per year. Not ideal by any means but better than it could have been.
Glad you are on board, Melvin. Wondering who your underlying internet provider is and what kind of connection you have.
I’m with Metronet with gigabit Fiber to my door for $75 a month, no contract. We were informed several months back that T-Mobile is absorbing MetroNet in a “partnership” deal, and at some point, we will become direct T-Mobile customers. Hence, I’m wondering if I will be able to get the full MLBTV deal soon.
I’m a T Mobile customer obviously formerly with Sprint who merged with them of course. Up until recently T Mobile didn’t provide wireless internet in my area which has changed I’m told. As of right now I’m with Verizon wireless internet for $70 per month and for the most part I’m really happy with it. I tried Spectrum for a few months a couple of years ago and they gave me terrible service.
The free MLB deal with T Mobile is on the T Mobile Tuesdays app and is only available for a short time from the 24th to the 31st of March.
“I tried Spectrum for a few months a couple of years ago and they gave me terrible service”
A story as old as time itself. Maybe even older.
Yeah, I have a friend here nearby who is just beyond the fiber and chose T-Mobile wireless home internet over Spectrum.
My advice to anyone and everyone who has the opportunity to get true fiber is to take it if it fits their budget. It is not unusual for me to have 2 games running and my wife bingeing on Netflix with nary a blip, burp, freeze, or definition downshift on any of the streams.
And the “fiber-powered” service offered by the aforementioned cable company is not really fiber. “Fiber-powered” simply means the signal rides fiber to some unspecified distribution point before being bridged onto copper at an unknown distance from the customer’s house.
Yes. It was much better for me to switch from Spectrum to Verizon wireless internet (which is really fast and rarely out) and use Fubo as my streaming service. Up until now with the Reds thing Fubo has been much better as well.
Well, at least the Real Madrid medical staff did clear up that Mbappe had one good knee. The Reds’ training staff did clarify that Lodolo has no blisters on his right hand.
Sproat made his MLB debut against the Reds early last September. Pitched fairly well, giving up 3 runs in 6 IP, but with 4 BBs. Elly in his 3rd AB against Sproat rifled one over the CF’s head to drive in a run, then came in to score. Sproat came to the Brewers as part of the Freddy Peralta trade with the Mets.
Hunter Greene pitched 7 innings in that game, and gave up 1 hit (Baty’s HR), walked 2 and struck out 12.
Not a bad start by Burns. Three straight Ks. 🙂
Looks like they left their bats in AZ
As long as they are in Cincinnati by Thursday it’s fine.
Let’s return the favor today, shall we?
Benson hitting bad luck continues…
hey hey hey…Hayes with2 hits. gimmee a 250 BA with decent wak rate with his fielding and what’s to complain about.
We’ll see. It’s just spring training but his numbers right now are .237/.356/.263/.619. Is his average of less than three chances per game worth that?
Heck yeah, a .356 OBP from the 9 hole and he gloves about 40 more balls at 3B than the average MLB defensive 3B, that’s a no brainer.
Too funny: a game or two ago commenters were wondering how Sal Stewart, who had erred, could be at 1B when the Reds had a Gold Glove winning 1B available.
Perhaps tonight sheds some light. That Gold Glove winning 1B has two errors, and counting.
Stewart is a very hard worker. He will continue to get better playing 1B. IF he eventually moves to 3B the same goes there.
New season, same old second-guessing.
You contribute so much here.
You never offer an opinion of your own.
Unless it’s after the fact or when it is to second guess others.
Wait, I almost forgot: When you’re running down Hunter Greene for some petty reason or another.
I don’t know but hope these last two exhibition games at Milwaukee won’t set the tone for the season beginning… Brewers seems to play seriously for good vibes but Reds don’t so far..maybe I’m wrong but don’t like it
Well it does seem that the Brewers love to see the Reds coming whether it’s spring training or regular season. They are by far the biggest hurdle the Reds need to get over.
As I recall, we hurdled them into the playoffs on the last weekend of last season. So that’s some positive momentum, at least!
