Hunter Greene

In his last start, Hunter Greene was nearly perfect. He gave up one hit and he walked one batter in a complete game shutout win against the Chicago Cubs. That start, though, followed perhaps his worst start in the last two years when he gave up five runs on four hits and four walks in 2.1 innings against the Athletics.

The splits against Greene this year basically don’t exist. Lefties hit for a lower average and a little more power. Righties have a higher average and they make a little more contact. Overall, though, there’s just a 12 point difference in the OPS against him between right-handed hitters and left-handed hitters.

Paul Skenes

Likely the winner of the NL Cy Young Award this year, Paul Skenes is going to make his final start of the year in this game. He leads the league with a 2.03 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and a 0.5 HR/9-innings pitched among qualified starters. Six weeks ago he faced the Reds for the only time this season and fired off six shutout innings while giving up seven hits and walking no one. He’s coming off of the worst start of the year for him as the Cubs scored three runs on seven hits and three walks in 3.2 innings against him. He had only allowed three runs combined in his five previous starts.

The splits against Skenes this season favor left-handed hitters. They are hitting for a higher average, walk more frequently, and they hit for more power – though still very little power. Right-handed hitters have not been able to do anything at all against him all season long – posting a .500 OPS against him.

  1. RedlegScott

Tonight’s lineup noticeably different than last night’s. Good luck, HG!

  2. RedsGettingBetter

Reds should find the way to defeat Skenes or at least win this game after he leaves it…

  3. Mark Moore

Focusing all the positive energy/thoughts/whatever on the Boyz and HG …

    Scuttle the Pie-Rats!!

  4. Klugo

About as “must win” as one can get.

  5. Noyes

It’s September 24 and Reds/Pirates is the main event of the evening. Cool.

  6. GPod

I am begging….Tito, try a steal, try a hit & run…..please!!! Not another night with three DP’S please

    • Daytonnati

Interesting pre-game stat: Reds with 104 steals total this year. 207 last year.

  7. Eddiek957

Gotta win. Go Reds and go Cubs. Still can’t pull for the Dodgers oh what the heck I hope Arizona loses

  8. Will the Red

Don’t understand how Andujar isn’t healthy enough to start at DH, but IS healthy enough to pinch it AND not go on the IL. Just me, sitting over here, scratching my head.

  9. Eric the Red

Go Reds! Three wildcards is an abomination, but we might as well take advantage and then run the table in the playoffs.

    • Mark Moore

      +5,000

Moving toward NHL and NBA territory. Because when everybody’s super, then no one will be.

  10. Will Henry

Another interesting fact: Reds hit into 86 DPs last year, 102 DPs this year.

  11. Mark Moore

That’s the way to start the game

  12. RedsGettingBetter

Good first inning by Greene… the ump miscalled two pitches favouring Pirates

  13. Mark Moore

5 straight out of the zone to Marte and he whiffs.

  14. RedsGettingBetter

Friedl and MArte were patient both working 3-2 counts….Lux made swing to the first pitch…

    • Tom Mitsoff

The hitters have probably been told that if they get something they like early in the at-bat, you might as well go for it.

      • Noyes

Skenes is no dummy. Dance around Marte, attack Lux.

  15. GreatRedLegsFan

First call during the offseason should be to look for one or two good situational hitters, able to hit with RISP instead of SO or HDP, which has been a major flaw this season.

  16. Mark Moore

    6 up, 6 down.

Pham got the benefit of at least one “didn’t swing” call. Probably both.

  17. Tom Mitsoff

Twenty-four consecutive scoreless innings against the Reds by Skenes, according to John Sadak. Someone has to run into one eventually. 😉

    • RedsGettingBetter

So the odds are high about the Reds scoring sooner than later ..Aren’t they?

  18. RedsGettingBetter

It was a good at-bat by Stewart… Skenes is unhittable so far

  19. GPod

to be real…..what are the chances the Reds score in this game…maybe 10% chance

  20. GreatRedLegsFan

Pirates will surely enjoy spoiling the postseason hopes.

  21. Tom Mitsoff

Greene’s location on everything but the fastball is inconsistent.

  22. Tom Mitsoff

Pretty big moment for Greene to try to get a strikeout against the #9 batter with a runner on third.

  23. Noyes

The dorks like Gonzales and Yorke who cut down their swings gave him trouble. Davis and Cruz swung from their shoes and didn’t.

HG looked pretty frustrated with himself when he kept missing with sliders in the 2nd. Don’t have to be perfect, man!

    • VaRedsFan

      Yes.
All Reds hitters should use this approach vs. Skenes.

  24. Pharmer85

Didn’t amount to anything, but nice AB by Yorke to advance the runner, something we rarely see from the Reds. Way to battle back HG

  25. GPod

I do not know what has happened to Marte

    • Tom Mitsoff

Sadak just mentioned that pitchers are pitching him tight with pitches completely off the plate that Marte is swinging at, and then they are getting him on pitches away.

  26. Mark Moore

Marte has seen 10 pitches and only 3 were strikes. Yet he’s whiffed twice … 😐

  27. Tom Mitsoff

Skenes is living rent-free in Marte’s head.

  28. RedsGettingBetter

Noelvi Marte was guessing , he chased a far away pitch

  29. Doc4uk

Hines is a better hitter and fielder than Marte

    • VaRedsFan

      Stats to back this up?
      Fielding for sure.

      • JB

Haven’t seen enough of Hines to say his fielding is a sure.

      • Roger Garrett

Why stats for his post and not yours?Fielding for sure?He can’t voice an opinion but you can?Oh I get it Marte has never played the outfield and Hinds has so naturally Hinds is a better fielder.Go it.

  30. Tom Mitsoff

It’s not ridiculous to say that might be the game.

  31. RedsGettingBetter

    The walks haunting… Game over?

  32. Mark Moore

Hunter gets hosed on a call with Reynolds and he walks and scores. Marte airmailed that one. Great communication from TySteve and throw by Steer.

    • VaRedsFan

That’s why there are 2 cutoff men.
They weren’t getting the guy at home.

  33. Votto4life

Wife and I are at the game. Some guy behind me is telling his buddies what a great player he was. in high school and he is pretty sure he could hit Paul Skenes. (Hard eyeroll)

  34. VaRedsFan

Day mentioned that Elly has gone back to a leg kick vs. a toe tap.

  35. GPod

why in the heck did you not give Elly a chance to run????

  36. VaRedsFan

Elly on first and Stewart swings at the 1st pitch.
    Not a fan of that.
He’s not the only one that does it either.

  37. H.B.

It’s starting to look like Marte might be a good platoon player or a platoon D.H. You have to try to reach base. Some of his swings look like he has given up for tonight and batting second!!!

    • Mark Moore

Do remember he had only half a season last year (and a miserable one at that).

But I get what you are saying.

      • H.B.

He is young and learning a new position. At this level you have to adjust because they will find your weaknesses and exploit them.

    • Justin T

He has been the best hitter on the team for most of the second half. Tough crowd.

  38. DW

How many wins would Skenes have this year if he played for any playoff bound team? He is currently the best pitcher in baseball.

  39. GPod

The longer this game goes and we don’t score and are down on the scoreboard, the more tighter our at bats get, the more the pressure grows and the less chance we have to score…just like last night

  40. Brett

Looks like another huge disappointment on the way. Their typical mid season offense has shown up. Go Go Go Dodgers and Cubs. PLEASE!!!

  41. JB

Reds luck right there with Stephenson double.

  42. chris

on third one out. cannot leave him stranded.

  43. Indy Red Man

So glad we rode it with Trevino last night. Dude shouldn’t catch at all with the time left

    • JB

But but everybody said he was the savior and the Reds should trade Stephenson and one moroon said to DFA him.

  44. RedsGettingBetter

McLain is killing the team… Unfortunately he got all the clutch at bats

    • RedAlert

It’s always him when it’s on the line seems like …. He’s awful.

  45. Mark Moore

We just can’t execute when we need to. Chumpire hosed him, but still …

    • Tom Mitsoff

They need to be able to get more than one hit in an inning.

  46. JB

Like who didn’t know that Stephenson would be stranded.

  47. dimondfvr

Another wasted opportunity! We have seen this story play out all year.

  48. Noyes

Skenes with the right-on-right changeup down and in to McLain. That’s just gross.

  49. Votto4life

Getting to dread seeing Matt McLain in the batter’s box. Becoming an automatic out.

  50. Redlegs1869

Gotta give Stephenson some due. But did we think we’d score after a lead off double? I didn’t. Pitiful effort from McClain and Friedl. Can’t score there? May not all night.

  51. GPod

I always remember Pete Rose saying: don’t check swing with 2 strikes, either commit to th pitch 100% or just do not swing….nothing good happens when you check swing when you already have 2 strikes…..I see that play out all the time

    • VaRedsFan

Except Pham check swung twice, and eventually walked and scored.

  52. JB

McLain reminds me of Billy Hamilton. Every time the Reds needed a clutch hit to drive in a run and Billy would be up. Billy failed repeatedly.

  53. Doc4uk

Can we move McClain to tenth in the order

    • H.B.

Colorado Rockies might need a second sacker.

  54. GPod

Sal has a glove at 3rd….now we can move Hayes (to another team)

    • VaRedsFan

He should have used it there for the 3rd out.

    • Redlegs1869

Woops! Not so fast. I agree with him playing but he just cost a run. And 2 probably does the Reds in.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. And that’s the argument for playing him.

  55. RedlegScott

That’s trouble. No run support for HG.

  56. Pharmer85

Reynolds has always been a thorn in the Reds’ side. Having an average year overall but my idea of a professional hitter

  57. dimondfvr

So the Reds get a double with no one out and can’t score. Pirates get a double with two outs and score. You can’t make this up! Cowboy says if you are a major league third baseman you should make that play!

  58. lsimfred

Outplayed in a playoff race by Spencer Horwitz? He technically shouldn’t even be playing today as it’s still the New Year holiday.

  59. Roger Garrett

Good year so we look to next year with hope one more time. Why not its what we do.

  60. Mark Moore

That felt like a dagger to the back

  61. Andrew Brewer

Time for the Reds to hit this guy !

    • Andrew Brewer

but nothin’ doin’ in the 6th …

  62. GPod

It’s sad that a starting pitcher who only gives up 2 runs in 6 innings may get an L…..this reds offense is just killing them all season…what a waste of starting pitching all year long

  63. Noyes

The fastballs that Reynolds and Horwitz hit were both middle-middle (and so was the splitter that Cruz just missed). Above-average fielders might have had both of those too.

Skenes is human. Time to get everybody off the hook.

    • RedAlert

Getting completely Owned by one of the worst teams in MLB … that hurts … yea it’s Skeins , but this has happened all year

  64. H.B.

Sadek really is starting to wear on me. He is so knowledgeable but never shuts up!!! Give me the Cowboy and Tommy Thrall. We still can come back on this guy and I’m sick of hearing about the only run we have ever scored on Skenes!!!

  65. JB

Skenes only at 85. He’s got at least 1 more in him.

      • GPod

i stand corrected…looks like he is done too

  66. Andrew Brewer

Looks like Tito is going to save Greene for another day… Chase Burns on for the 7th.

    • JB

I think the Reds are saving their offense for another day.

    • Andrew Brewer

Nice work by Burns, but the Reds have to score … 3 innings left.

  67. LDS

It’s starting to look like the Reds will have to depend on the Cubs and Dodgers. They sure aren’t helping themselves. No doubt, Skenes is a great pitcher, but he has been hit a few games. No reason the Reds shouldn’t. Maybe they’ll win this one on defense. Who needs a bat?

  68. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds being eliminated by Pirates is embarrassing…

    • Andrew Brewer

Skenes gets pulled in the 7th … Pirates are giving us a shot.

  69. VaRedsFan

Here you go Roger, since you asked.

Here ya go, since you asked.

    Hinds.
    2025 – 116/.136/.279
    Career – .191/.242/.506

    Marte
    2025 – .269/.409/.459
    Career – .256/.298/.404

    Fielding – Outfield
2025 Marte – -3 Def Runs saved (Only 399 innings)
Hinds didn’t show up in the rankings, but at least passed the eye test. (arm and range)

    • Roger Garrett

Oh come on now eye test? That’s an opinion right and not based on stats. So your opinion is Hinds is the better fielder?Friend you challenge a lot of the opinions of others with where is the stats as if all that is said on here must be backed up by stats Unless I missed something in the posting guidelines we don’t need stats to make a comment.

      • VaRedsFan

I provided the stats my man. …7 lines of them.

If you can’t see that Marte is not a good outfielder yet, then I’ve got no help for you.

I believe he will get better with time.
Hind has been good when he’s out there.

      • VaRedsFan

And ditto if you can’t see that Marte is a better hitter

  70. Roger Garrett

I would rather they make a few errors and walk a bunch of our hitters cause if we have to actually hit to win well lets see.

  71. RedAlert

This is pitiful baseball …. Another great
pitching effort going to wasted because of this pathetic offense

  72. GPod

watching this reds offense is like putting a nail in your eye….remember earlier in the season when the reds lost 3 games in a row 1-0…..who does that?

    • Andrew Brewer

It was early in the season, but, yes, we remember it … and more.

  73. Andrew Brewer

It’s onto the 8th … and the Reds season hangs in the balance.

  74. Moon

Reds have not scored in 14 innings. Noodle bats.

  75. RedsGettingBetter

It is possible that the end of the season has come…

  76. RedAlert

Pirates 68-89 ….. unbelievable choke by Reds this far . Skenes or not , the PIRATES ARE A TERRIBLE TEAM

  77. Jedi Joey

This team couldn’t score in a whore house with a fistful of 100 dollar bills

    • Mark Moore

Harsh … but accurate last night and tonight.

  78. Indy Red Man

McLain fail w/man on 3rd and Stewie not getting a groundball that looked about 2 feet away. Idk? Maybe you go with HG yesterday and Tito def should’ve started Stephenson until we’ve either clinched or been eliminated. They had a day off already? Makes zero sense.

    Under 6.5 looks peachy atleast

  79. Votto4life

Is Austin Hayes hurt? Sure hope they don’t re-sign him. He had some good games early in the season but hasn’t showed us in the second half.

  80. Indy Red Man

Hinds, Dunn, CES, anybody down there would also be more valuable to the operation then Espinal. First he got a million at-bats then he went MIA but still on the roster.
    Tito?

  81. Mark Moore

Desperate for a positive spin … Burns looks sharp.

  82. RedAlert

Pinch hit somebody for McLain …. ANYBODY

  83. Andrew Brewer

We’ll see what Tito does now in the 8th … need some hitters up there !

      • Andrew Brewer

I mean Mattson has been feeding them fastballs to hit !

  84. GPod

Reds need to restructure 1/2 of their lineup next season….this cannot go on….wasting the best pitching we have had in years

  85. Doc4uk

McClain , Friedl and Marte. Two strikeouts and a grounder to 1B

  86. Justin T

Improving the defense is like improving the offense. Lets go defense!

  87. Doc4uk

McClain , Friedl and Marte. Two strikeouts and a grounder to 1B. Ugh

  88. GPod

McLain has had 2 deep flyballs….but when we needed a flyball to score a run…strikeout….of course

  89. Mark Moore

    WOW!!!

    That’s something special.

  90. Indy Red Man

If you told me in March that McLain would be at .650 and Elly/Marte under .800, I’d say the ceiling would be about 77 wins

  91. JB

If only Stephensons was 3 inches higher .

    • Noyes

No kidding. Two homers missed by less than a foot. One of those games?

  92. Mark Moore

First Wife and I can’t believe they aren’t checking Cruz.

  93. Indy Red Man

You could pinch run Dunn or Hinds here and actually shake them up a little bit

  94. Andrew Brewer

So close and yet so far, the score is 2-1 Pirates after 8…

  95. Justin T

This Reds team is a perfect example of why batting average, hone runs and rbis are still the most important stats when building your lineup. Unless you hit (at minimum) 25 homers, a .240 average hurts your team. I call it the Candelario Theory.

  96. RedsGettingBetter

Elly hit that ball at 112.7 mph and was out… Just unbelievable…

    • VaRedsFan

Their 2nd baseman saved 2 hits that inning

  97. RedAlert

Reds very very unlucky this game. Geeze that ball was spanked !!!!! That’s unbelievable bad luck !!! Pirates playing with a horseshoe up their tail !!!!

    • Pharmer85

Not to mention the double by Stephenson that was so close to going out

  98. DK in Erie PA

Apparently ELDC is not made for clutch time.

    • VaRedsFan

Sure…ok…he hit that ball at 113 mph

      High leverage .288/.397/.495
      Med Leverage .324/.382/.516
      Low leverage .215/.284/.370

      • DK in Erie PA

Are you telling me that hitting the ball is what matters? Not results? Name 3 top ELDC clutch moments at plate at end of game. Everyone today is so in love with exit velo and spin rate. Getting the job done matters. Oh! He hit it hard! Two extra orange slices and a good job you tried your best for you Elly. He’s a freaking professional that this team depends on and he doesn’t deliver in clutch.

  99. Redlegs1869

That was our chance. Two on with your best player AB. Looking grim.

    • GPod

if Pagan can hold it….at least we would have 3 chances to hit a HR to tie it in the 9th

    • DK in Erie PA

Now bottom of lineup in 9th (not that anyone can tell the difference)
Plus now I have a genuine dislike for McLain. Jeepers that guy is as lost as anyone I’ve ever seen

      • Daytonnati

        “Jeepers”? Okay, Beav … 🙂

  100. RedAlert

Pagan come on MAN !!!!! UNBELIEVABLE

  101. GPod

cubs have bases loaded no outs in the 3rd

  102. Frogem

    RISP: 0-5
    Off-season goal: mental toughness training.

    • DK in Erie PA

Off season goal needs to be better players. The ones that the Reds have are
      Dreadful

  103. JB

Sal had to come a ways for that. Nice play.

  104. RedAlert

Gotta handle your own business Sadak and not depend on help ! Bottom line

  105. Roger Garrett

At Va Red-I call you friend you call me your man.WOW and say you can’t help me.Goodness are you ok.

    • VaRedsFan

You asked for stats, I provided them to the statement that… “Hinds is a better hitter and fielder than Marte” , apologies if you thought that was being disrespectful, my friend.

      • Roger Garrett

Not about the stats.I get it and agree and also agree with the eye test at times. You called me your man and said you couldn’t help me if I couldn’t see that Marte was not a good outfielder. You made it personal and that’s wrong.Just to be clear I am not your man nor do I need your help.

      • VaRedsFan

And I apologized if you mistook my comments. My man is not derogatory to anyone I know.

I stand by everything else that was said, because it was based on facts and watching him play baseball.

You wanted to insert your mouth into it.. by me asking another person to provide stats to back an opinion. You asked “where are my facts”

He didn’t …so I did to prove my point. But you seemed to get bent out of shape when I provided the facts for some reason. So now you are left looking like you do in this conversation.

      • Roger Garrett

Must be a generation thing we are dealing with VA Red.In my world of the 60’and 70’s my man was used to talk down to others staking claim to being superior.I view that as personal and wrong and you don’t so lets agree to disagree and move on shall we.One thing we can agree on is we want the Reds to win.GO REDS

  106. RedsGettingBetter

Pagan is not good tonight…hasn’t the usual power

    • VaRedsFan

He battled and got the zero though

  107. Andrew Brewer

Our homerun hitters are up in the 9th … such as they are.

Lose this one and it will take a miracle to get in the playoffs.

  108. RedsGettingBetter

    STEPHENSONNNN! tied the game!

    • Andrew Brewer

I had to step away and couldn’t watch … Wow, just Awesome !

  109. Noyes

You cannot stop Tyler Stephenson. You can only hope the ballpark contains him. Not this time.

  110. JB

People still want to trade Stephenson? Lol

    • VaRedsFan

Just wait until he grounds into the next DP….Pitchforks and torches.

  111. Mark Moore

And we’re back in it. 4-for-4 from TySteve!!

  112. Justin T

Now that was clutch TS. Him and Marte have had enough of the comments apparently.

    • Chris

Xtra innings. Can the Reds hold Pittsburgh and then score a runner from 2nd with no outs?

  113. Mark Moore

First Wife is now asking why we keep running MattyMc out there.

    • VaRedsFan

      FW is correct.
Might as well give Espy/Lux a shot at this point.

    • Tom Mitsoff

I was really surprised Francona didn’t pinch-hit someone for him.

  114. RedAlert

Sit McLain for rest of year for gosh sakes man he’s pathetic. !

    • RedAlert

…. And while at it , how bout a new leadoff man … I like Friedl , not at leadoff !

      • VaRedsFan

Leads all Reds regulars in OBP at .402

      • Justin T

        @VaRedsFan

Friedl does not have anywhere close to an OBP of .402 lol …He is at .360

      • VaRedsFan

        Correct you are…misread it.
But he is leading the regulars…Andujar was 402

      • RedAlert

Com on VaRedsFan … how bout check your facts before you post something dude …. I believe that’s the same thing you have told me before now isn’t it !

  115. dimondfvr

Great idea Tito to let McClain come upto strike out — again! On another ball in the dirt!

  116. Jeff morris

Why Reds don’t pinch hit for McLain is beyond me??

    • WCRon

      Blows my mind

Extras are not good for us

  117. Ronnie

Mcclain is killing us. You gotta put the ball in play there. He missed by a foot

    • Redlegs1869

Even Espy is worth a shot. He’s gotta be watching McClain and wondering “why can’t I get a chance? That dude is awful.”

      • WCRon

I would have let Andujar hit and then put Espy in the field

  118. Indy Red Man

Roll it up there and Matt will swing at it. What do you have to do to get benched around here?

  119. Indy Red Man

Bad beat coming on my under 6.5. Thats gambling

  120. JB

McLain wasn’t hitting that with a 6 iron.

  121. LDS

Stephenson brings them back from the dead and Santillian opens with a WP. Come on Reds, get it together. The Cubs are producing. Run with it.

  122. JB

The Reds just can’t have success for more than a minute

  123. GPod

that guy was batting .135……and he kills a double….good god

    • Indy Red Man

Every pitch was away away away

  124. Redlegs1869

Now we’re gonna be behind the 8 ball again in the 10th with a passed ball followed by a double. Judas Priest can we catch a break?

  125. dimondfvr

Again Santillan comes in every appearance all amped up and by the time he settles down, its too late!

  126. JB

The 1 run with ghost runner isn’t bad if he can hold them to that.

    • Redlegs1869

Agreed and they did. Can we scratch one or two here? Please, God…

  127. GPod

the problem is that it seems, anytime the reds get anything going, one of their deadbeat hitters comes up and kills it …..and lately it’s McLain

  128. JB

Will Tito play it right and bunt Friedl over.

  129. RedsGettingBetter

Suwinski is a guy hitting .130 avg 540 OPS and hit a double to deep CF to bring in home the ghost runner

    • Noyes

Santillan vs a lefty, throw the stats out sadly

    • Andy

Game would be over if he had stolen 2nd before the Elly single.

  130. Justin T

Marte haters? Normally I wouldnt say that but some of the comments on him are ridiculous, he is a stud. He comes to play and has been the only offensive bright spot on this team.

    • VaRedsFan

Any slump of more than 20AB’s and they want to call up minor leaguers.

    • JB

Exactly. To call him a platoon player is a joke.

  131. Indy Red Man

No steal, but I don’t think he scores there anyway. That was a bullet

  132. JB

Long at bat usually favors the hitter. Come on Andujar

  133. GPod

I just can’t take Sadek anymore…..he just never stops talking….blah….blah…..just let the game do the talking sometime

  134. Mark Moore

Shutting down the comments for tonight. We’re hanging tough. Hope Martinez can hold the line.

  135. RedsGettingBetter

Andujar battled but struck out… How difficult is to win against this bad Pirates team…

  136. Andrew Brewer

Wanted nobody else but Andujar in that situation… it took 10 pitches to get him. Reds and Pirates tied, 3-3 after 10.

  137. Jeremiah

Man, great effort by Andujar! 10 pitch at bat but just can’t get the big hit. This would be Heartbreaker if they can’t pull this one out.

  138. Indy Red Man

What a nerve wracker this turned into

  139. RedlegScott

I was hoping to see Ashcraft. He’s been doing much better lately.

  140. JB

I don’t understand the Andujar situation. The guy singles last night and then runs the bases. Obviously he is decent enough to DH. Tito makes me shake my head sometimes

    • VaRedsFan

Did he really run them? got forced out at 2nd on an infield bobble by the SS

  141. RedAlert

Be glad when Martinez and his 21 million are off this roster ….

  142. RedsGettingBetter

Hoewitz has been a Reds killer tonight…incredible

  143. JB

Again the 1 run is expected by the visiting team in extras. Just hold them to that.

  144. RedlegScott

Nice recovery, Nick. Let’s do this!

  145. Tom Mitsoff

So McLain up third in the 11th. Options are limited. Only Hays and Trevino left on the bench.

    • Andrew Brewer

I was wondering about that. Hays would be my choice.

  146. dimondfvr

Hmmm. Will McClain come to the plate again in the bottom of the 11th or will Tito send in a pinch hitter?

  147. RedsGettingBetter

Hopefully Stephenson if can’t bring in home the ghost runner at least moving him to 3rd is very important

  148. RedsGettingBetter

McLAin has another chance to produce…incredible

  149. RedAlert

Choked again and again and again and again and again …..

    • billmummer

Skenes outpitched Hunter…Reds tie game against relievers…choke in the end against rest of Pirates mediocre staff…

  150. RedlegScott

At least we made it interesting.

  151. WCRon

Season is over. Was a decent year though

  152. Noyes

I love how they play so well when their backs are to the wall, but this team has the killer instinct of a three-legged rabbit.

  153. VaRedsFan

Perfect pitch for his RF stroke.
    Plan aborted.

  154. CI3J

    Absolute dagger.

Reds are running out of time and chances.

Luckily, looks like the Mets are also going to lose.

Reds need to hope the Mets only win one more game all season. Then the Reds just need to win 2.

  155. RedAlert

0 for eternity with runners in scoring position – don’t deserve playoffs losing to this pitiful Pirates team …control own destiny and choke it down drain …. CHOKE CITY

  156. GPod

this is the worst clutch hitting team i have ever seen….seems every night….1-10 or worse with men in SP…..all season long…so no suprise we see it tonight….that is why the reds record in extra innings is so horrible

  157. Jedi Joey

Lost the series to the Pirates. The last place Pirates. Absolutely inexcusable but probably not shocking to anyone.

  158. Brian

That was lousy. A side question…. So it’s ok for pitchers to wear dangling, shiny earrings these days?

  159. Andrew Brewer

Reds just don’t win in extras … Will have to win all 4 now to finish the season with a chance at 84 wins. One more at home and then on to Milwaukee.

  160. Indy Red Man

Lost the season series to the Nats and Braves. 6-6 with the pitiful Pirates. Unreal
Andujar just missed a fun walkoff. Story of the Cincinnati Reds

  161. RedsGettingBetter

If you can’t win games especially against the ugly teams you don’t deserve to go to the postseason…wasted opportunities again in the 10th and 11th…

    • Dennis Westrick

That record alone is why this 2025 Reds team DOES NOT deserve to be in the post season!

  162. RedAlert

    Thankgoodness Mclain didn’t sign that
extension …. Some of the most brutal at bats I’ve witnessed all season have come from that dude … he couldn’t hit it in the ocean , off a batting tee , standing on the shoreline

    • Votto4life

Mclain may be the worst starting position player in baseball. He had a couple of good months Two years ago. I hope the Reds move on from him. I used to like him a lot, but he is pretty much a sure out these days.

  163. paleblue

If only McLain still had options they could have sent him to Louisville four months ago.

    Oh, wait.

    • Indy Red Man

Yeah Lux production looks pretty solid for 2B which opens up DH/LF to someone with an actual ceiling. Hays was out for close to 2 months. Minimum of 3 wins Tito blew by not sitting MM down. He’s been horrible basically all year

  164. Chris

What ticks me off about the McLain issue is that the organization has done him so wrong. This kid should have been sent down in June, so that he could build his confidence coming back from a full season off. Instead, they keep him up, and start him nightly, and his confidence is just destroyed. The kid is VERY GOOD, but he is a mess right now, and has been since his early on injury this season.

  165. Michael B. Green

Young team. Played with heart. I liked the guys that passed the baton and took a walk in big moments. The guys that swung at every pitch under the sun need to reflect. Good experience. Good heart. Good game.

  166. Indy Red Man

Also need to root for Miami tomorrow vs Philly. Milw Magic # is 1 for best record in the NL. If they need it Friday they’ll get it

  167. RedlegScott

Prediction: They will keep McLain and call this season an anomaly.

  168. Votto4life

The crowd the last two nights have just been amazing..too bad the team laid two big eggs. The fans deserve a better team.

    • Jeremiah

I agree, just from watching highlights Reds have such good fans if they provide a winner. I was proud to be a Reds fan seeing the energy the fans were bringing!

    • Redlegs1869

The players asked the fans to show up and they did. Only problem is the players didn’t show up.

  169. Kevin H

Heartbreaking lose. Ugh.. they played hard and didnt go down without a fight. I like this team and the direction they are heading. They have the pitching, now if they add some power bullpen type arms and two clutch/power hitters. Next season should be soild!!

Man, now realistically have to win last 4 games for a shot at playoffs. Disappointed to say the least, however what a fun game to listen too.

    • Indy Red Man

All we need is 2 clutch power hitters? All I need is a mansion and a Ferrari, but if I was like Castellini I’d get a room at Motel 6 and a 1989 Ford Pinto

      • Kevin H

Well Francona uses who he has, and let’s face it your comment is on target.

They didnt do anything at trade deadline.

    • Votto4life

I don’t see the Reds winning the series in Milwaukee. The Brewers won’t just lay down for the Reds.

      • Votto4life

To be honest, I think finishing with a winning record is in danger.

  170. H.B.

Never give up until it’s over. The larger point is that we are not good enough to beat a good team. Maybe next year we will be improved. We have a lot of young players.

    • Redlegs1869

Reds aren’t even good enough to beat a bad team when it matters most. I’ve said all year they are only average, while some insisted they were a “good” team.

  171. Michael B. Green

I don’t want to offend or upset anyone in this group, but I do think showing trust in Matt McLain is the right thing for an organization. Yes, us fans want to win – now. Everyone does.

Having stated that, a 28.5% K% is not going to work. A FB% of 44.3% rate does not work either. Matt is a ballplayer. Not a power hitter. His LD% needs to be way higher than 17.3%. The upper cut needs to disappear this winter. This is true for a lot of hitters in MLB. It’s ugly. Can you imagine Pete Rose hitting a bunch of fly balls?

Still, he is right on the edge of accumulating 1,000 PA’s in the bigs now. That is when you can see a breakout.

I think his winter workouts should focus on flexibility, footwork, and his athletic tools that make him a 2B/SS – not power – not uppercut – not flyballs. There is a great HOF SS for him to model. I hope he spends some time with him this winter. I know it will pay wonders.

Most importantly. Hang in there, Matt. You’re our guy.

  172. Rick

Matt needs to change his setup approach in the batters box or his output/results will never change. He’s to short for the area that he’s trying cover plus, he swings at unhittable fb’s hi out of the top horizontal plain.
Hayes also needs an even setup with maybe a low toetap to keep his balance & his hips torqued to drive from his rt leg. His rt leg is too busy while the ball is released. He’s fixable as is McLain if, if they’re coachable.
