Andrew Abbott and Padres starter Nick Pivetta were locked in a pitcher’s duel tonight. Pivetta went seven shut-out innings, allowing only four hits while striking out eight. Meanwhile, Abbott rebounded from his recent tough starts in a huge way. He allowed just one run over eight innings, a Fernando Tatis Jr. solo home run in the 5th. He was pitch-efficient, throwing just 102 pitches, while striking out six and walking two.

Abbott did have to work through a couple of jams, but maintained his composure throughout them all. In the bottom of the third, Jake Cronenworth led off the third inning with a walk. One out later, Tatis Jr. singled to center, but Abbott was able to get Luis Arraez and Manny Machado out to end the inning with no damage done. In the fourth inning, Abbott walked another lead off batter and Ramon Laureano followed with a single. He still got out of that inning with relative ease though, aided by a nice play by Sal Stewart to get the lead runner on a bunt attempt with one out and the runners at first and second.

The Reds had their opportunities to score off Pivetta too. In the third inning, the Reds got back-to-back one-out singles from Ke’Bryan Hayes and Matt McLain, but TJ Friedl grounded into a force out and Noelvi Marte struck out to end the inning. The Reds had another chance to tie or take the lead in the sixth when Friedl drew a leadoff walk, but they could only manage an Austin Hays two-out single for the rest of the inning. Ramon Laureano robbed Ke’Bryan Hayes of a game-tying home run to end the seventh inning.

The Reds broke through in the eighth though when Friedl reached base via a one-out bunt single that Padres reliever and Cincinnati native Kyle Hart couldn’t quite make the play on. After a Marte ground out, Padres manager Mike Shildt brought on lefty All-Star pitcher Adrian Morejon to face Elly De La Cruz. De La Cruz delivered an RBI single past the first baseman to score Friedl from second and tie the game. Terry Francona called on Miguel Andujar to pinch-hit for the struggling Gavin Lux and Andujar delivered a bloop single to left field that scored De La Cruz from second after he had stolen his 34th base of the season.

The Reds failed to score some insurance runs in the 9th even though they loaded the bases with one out, but Tony Santillan was able to work around a lead0ff double by Gavin Sheets in the bottom of the inning to earn the save and close out the game for the Reds.

Key Moment of the Game

Miguel Andujar’s pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the eighth that scored Elly De La Cruz from second and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Notes Worth Noting

-Friedl’s bunt single in the eighth inning gives him 11 bunt hits on the season, the most in MLB.

-It was the Reds’ first series win in San Diego since 2019.

-Both the Mets and the Giants lost today, so with the Reds win, it moves them into a tie with San Francisco and two games behind New York for the final wild card spot.

    SPECTACULAR outing by Abbott.
2.79 era on the season. I’ll take that all day, every day.

  2. Indy Red Man

Wow. One thing that stood out to me though in a bad way was how close Friedl’s slide was. Is he not running well? He didn’t steal when he got that leadoff walk and Pivetta was throwing big looping 12-6 curves so he could’ve made it easy if he timed it right. Maybe he’s got an Andujar? Elly didn’t kill that ball and there was 2 outs? I was shocked it was going to be so close

    • Jim Walker

I was surprised too, but Tatis has a world class arm and showed it there.

Doug mentioned in one of the recent posts that, per Statcast, Friedl has lost a significant amount of speed and is no longer rated as fast.

      • Jmb

He’s rated just below Grisham on D, has a higher BA, but is 2 years older, and Grisham has hit 30 homers.

      • Makk s

I have not seen or heard this. Just keep in mind you have .more outfielders now with big arms. Tatis is right there with the best of them. Great throw then pick and tag by the catcher

    • VaRedsFan

      “Elly didn’t kill that ball”
Elly hit that ball at 101.3 well above the 95 mph “hard hit” classification.

MLB Central broke down this exact play and how everybody (both teams) did everything right.

    • Mark s

Nothing wrong with Friedl’s speed. That was an incredible throw by Tattis. There is reason he has thrown out a lot runners on the basepaths. He has a big-time arm. It was an even better play for the catcher to pick that skip throw and then a sweep tag. Overall that play was a Big League play all around. Great throw, great pick and tag by the catcher and Friedl big time slide. Keep in mind other teams have big time players that make big time plays. Thats why all these guys are in the major leagues.

  3. Jim Walker

Repeating from the game thread; but, it is worth repeating. Every night is playoff baseball! Hopefully, the Reds will win enough and someone will lose enough for the Reds to advance to the October round.

    • Indy Red Man

Texas just swept Milw and they’re the first team the Mets get when they get back home on Friday. SF has 7 more with LA. I thought we were dead a couple of times , but Mets losing 2 to us after the opener and then 3 straight to Philly gave us a chance.

      • Jim Walker

Baseball Reference says the Mets have an opportunity to lose again to the Phillies on Thursday.

      • Jim Walker

Not getting one of the two games blown versus the Jays may loom as large as a missed PAT for the Reds in the next 2+ weeks.

      • Indy Red Man

Yeah we need Philly to keep bashing them

      • Jmb

TX is surging. They may turn out to be the Reds of the AL–making it not on their own merit but because no one else seems to want it enough.

  4. Jeremiah

I’ll be honest, I’ve somewhat stopped following the Reds closely the last 4-5 days and pretty much gave up on them, yet somehow they are only 2 games out of the race? Crazy! I think it’d be pretty crazy if the Reds or Giants beat out the Mets for the final spot. Epic collapse by the Mets overall right now. Maybe they turn it around who knows.

Nice clutch hitting by Elly De La Cruz and great slide by Friedl. Still kind of the same team, just getting elite starting pitching these last several games. It’s too bad this Offense wasn’t a little better. They could easily be up 3 games or so on the Mets if they had a better overall Offense.

Maybe they’ll sneak in to the playoffs. I think 84 wins is still a bit embarrassing getting into the playoffs at. 85 would look a little better.

    • Indy Red Man

Yeah I gave up for the 2nd time after Toronto smashed us the last 2 games. I caught the last few innings of the choke vs the Mets in the opener and then gave up again lol.
These guys don’t hit much and can be boring at times, but they are resilient. Mets just go on 4+ losing streaks constantly…idk how they are still ahead? I guess they were just so dominant at home early in the year

    • Erik the Red

Can not disagree with the logic that a team gets in the playoffs with 84 wins however the Mets won the NL East with 83 wins in 1973 and beat the Reds in a 5 game playoff and then played the Oakland A’s in a seven game World Series before losing. Either way I would be happy with any playoff opportunity.

    • CincyDo

How will Reds get to 85, you ask. Sweep As, sweep pirates, split Cubs, win 2-1 Cardinals, lose 1-2 Brewers. That’s 11 wins plus 74. Ask and you shall receive.

      • Jmb

The A’s are better than you think, but the 3 NL teams aren’t playing so well of late, like the Mets and Pads.

      • TR

A surprising big win for the Reds with their co-ace pitcher, Abbott, going eight innings. It was recently six games out and now it’s two. Things can change fast. I take it a game at a time. The A’s are usually tough for the Reds, so let’s not have a letdown in Sacramento.

      • Jim Walker

If the Reds get to 85 wins, I think it is more likely to happen without a sweep but by winning all 5 series (note: the Cubs series is a 4 game set, the others all 3 games).

      • Jason T.

As has been the case all season long, the Reds offense doesn’t inspire much hope. Just too inconsistent even with pretty dominant starting pitching. They’ve been about a .500 team virtually all season long. Every time they’d get to 5-7 games over they’d lose and drop close back to the .500 level. That’s the reality of this offense. Not having Andujar play consistently has hurt. The Reds seem to have more streaky hitters than most teams do. They lack a veteran bat to steady the ship. Also the homers have been lacking overall which is exacerbated by playing home games in the most homer friendly ballpark.
Could they sneak in? Sure, it’s possible. We’d all love that. The Reds playing meaningful baseball is the stuff dreams are made of. I’m just not optimistic but with their pitching it’s still possible.
I just dream of an off-season where appropriate money is spent to correct the offense and build a contender. The pitching is there and has a higher ceiling. Full seasons out of Burns and Lowder in the rotation could be pretty special when added to Greene, Abbott and Lodolo. Singer has been pretty good too. He’s durable and pitches a lot of innings. Address hitting and bullpen arms.

  5. CincyDo

We won with tremendous SP and enough offense. Defense was sound and Francona didnt mismanage. This is our winning formula and we will ride it to October baseball. Very little to none margin for error. What a game. What a series.

  6. Indy Red Man

Mets were 45-24 on June 12. Thats crazy.

They’ve had losing streaks of 7,7,4, 4, and the current 5 gamer they’re currently on

    • Jmb

Soto has gotten hot, after a long cool spell, and I think Lindor and Vientos have improved, but their pitching has really struggled.

  7. CincyDo

Singer, Greene, and Lodolo pitch in next series. We can’t ask for better SP. Maxwell, Phillips, Burn, Martinez in bullpen to go along with Santillan and Pagan. We’re ready to go to war.

    • Jim Walker

It is going to be an interesting call which pitcher gets optioned or sent to the IL to make room for Burns on Friday (and possibly Ashcraft this time next week). I do not think they are going to risk waivers or a walk away from outright assignment by a veteran, i.e., Suter or Barlow.

    • SteveAReno

Good to see that but the A’s are much tougher than our fans are willing to know. It will be a difficult series so bring the A game! In addition the Louisville Bats are on a long win streak third best now in the International division! Buck Farmer, Hinds, and Plutko getting attention.

  8. Indy Red Man

Not to be Debbie Downer and signing off, but Friedl not running well and never stealing really bugs me. Even old man Iggy stole on the Reds last night. Pivetta is up there throwing big looping 12-6 curves….cmon? They run Stephenson ragged and we rarely counter with our own speed. I really hope someone can talk Tito into changing things up next year. Going into tonight we were 10th in the NL with 95 steals.

      • Frostgiant

Just imagine how many bunt hits he could have if he was top 34 percent sprint speed in baseball.

    • greenmtred

We’ve heard that Tito has partially shackled the running game, but it’s also the case that Elly–the chief base thief–has been dealing with leg issues all season. I also wonder whether McLain and Steer are being conservative due to the danger of headfirst slides aggravating shoulder problems.

      • doofus

Perhaps they should slide feet first? Unless something else is ailing them.

      • MARKS

MCLAIN has not been on base enough to run. You can’t run when not on base. Steer has been dealing with leg issues all year. Its been a combination of playee health and lack of people getting on base.

      • VaRedsFan

Because unless you just get a huge walking lead and will be safe by a mile, sliding feet first is just a bad choice when stealing.

Tag avoidance when sliding head 1st allows one to slide several more feet away from the bag and grab it on the way by. That option doesn’t exist when sliding feet 1st.

Overall though, I agree they should be stealing more.

Jogger Machado has 13. Soto has 30.
Bring back the sneak attack SB’s like Todd Frazier used to get.

      • greenmtred

Surprisingly, McLain has been on base 165 times (more, since he’s probably been HBP a few times and also gotten on through fielder’s choice), and has had 16 stolen bases, caught twice. He’s decent at it, and is one of the fastest guys on the team.

      • greenmtred

Good point, VaRedsFan, though I do remember practicing the legendary hook slide when I was a kid. Still takes you closer to the base than head first, though.

  9. RedlegScott

No team is a pushover at home, but if we ever needed a road sweep, this series against Oakland is it.

  10. DaveCT

Hayes and McLain at 8 and 9 were a combined 3-6 with 2 BB.

No runs but there is a cumulative effect of pressure coming from the bottom of the order.

This is heightened when the order turns over to Friedl, 1-3 tonight with 2 BB. Oh, and a very big run.

    That’s 8, 9, and 1 going 4-9 with 4 BB. On base 8 times.

They’re like a bunch of gnats flying around your head when you’re mowing the yard. Or, worse, cooking on the grill.

    • RedlegScott

Where I’m from, they’re like a bunch of scorpions hiding out in your shoe when you put it on.

  11. RedsGettingBetter

A not usual come from behind win tonight especially against arguably the best bullpen in baseball… Reds were 6 GB from the Mets on Friday after the 5-4 loss looking they were done for the season, now just 6 days later they are only 2 GB back again. They are still alive!
TJ Friedl bunt single was so important in that 2-run rally… Ke’ Hayes keeps hitting well and reaching often even he was robbed from hitting a homerun. Marte is in a deep slump right now…
Abbott was masterful…He could rebound so well after many struggles…
They should be careful facing the A’s…that team can hit well and they are spoilers…

    • Jmb

Hayes obviously likes playing in/for Cincy.

    • MARKS

MCLAIN has not been on base enough to run. You can’t run when not on base. Steer has been dealing with leg issues all year. Its been a combination of playee health and lack of people getting on base

  12. DW

Thought maybe Abbott had hit the wall for the season…then he comes out and performs like this. Very impressive.

  13. Jmb

How is it Marte dropped the ball and didn’t get an error?

    • Jim Walker

The ruling was that he had controlled the ball and dropped it on the transfer to his throwing hand, same call as when the middle man in a would be GIDP drops the ball on the transfer.

  14. Rednat

The speed topic is interesting. I remember players like Morgan, Concepcion, Ozzie Smith. Their speed carried with them well into their late 30s. Now it seems like these players have good speed for a few years then their sb numbers fall off the face of the earth. Jonathan India is 0-4 in stolen base attempt this year.

    • CenTexRed

It couldn’t be the result of Friedl or India’s multiple injuries.

It must be their choice of breakfast cereal.

No other way to explain it.

      • Indy Red Man

Shouldn’t be leading off or playing CF then? And if Iggy can steal then so could Friedl. Pivetta kept throwing those slow curves.

Actually I’ve said this for years….Friedl would be hitting 8th or 9th in a really good lineup. I will say he is walking more and getting his bunts down. .365 obp is pretty good in todays game

      • Jim Walker

@CenTexRed: “No other way to explain it.”

And of course, not just the random luck of their DNA. That could never make them more susceptible to certain injuries, recovering less fully from them, or to aging more quickly 😉

      • VaRedsFan

Iggy stole a base when the batter’s follow through hit Tyler in the chest during the throw, and the ump didn’t call it.

Ty does have to do a better job of selling the interference.

    • Marks

I think you are dreaming on that. Morgan had good speed. He was a technician on base running. One big difference today is you have a lot of catchers with big arms. 50 years ago you had a few. None of the guys you mentioned would tell you they maintained their speed. I have heard over the years from players that over 30 the legs are not the same..

      • greenmtred

I hadn’t heard that catchers have better arms today than catchers of fifty years ago. Evolution isn’t that fast, and there were certainly strong arms at other positions.

  15. CI3J

It is for sure exciting that the Reds have clawed their way back into the playoff chase after being left for a dead a week ago.

But with just 16 games left, I’m not sure the Reds have time to make up the 2-game gap on the Mets, unless the Mets go something like 6-10 or worse over this final stretch.

Guess we’ll see. It ain’t over ’til it’s over, but I have a sickening feeling that the Reds are going to eliminated in a heartbreaking fashion in the final series of the season against the Brewers.

    • Indy Red Man

It is possible to make up 2 games in 2 games you know. Mets are 45-27 at home and have a 9 game homestand starting tomorrow. Hopefully Philly will sweep them today

      • CI3J

        Yes, I know it’s POSSIBLE.

But I was commenting more on if it’s LIKELY.

    • docmike

Not sure they have time to make up the 2 game gap? Are you serious? They literally just shaved 2 games off the deficit over the last 2 days. In fact, they’ve cut the Mets’ lead from 6 games to 2 over the past 5 days.

They definitely have enough time. Just a matter of going out and doing it.

      • CI3J

As I said above, I know it’s POSSIBLE.

I’m just not sure I see the Reds being 2 games better than the Mets over the final 16. The Reds would need to get hot and the Mets would need to falter.

If the Mets play just .500, the Reds would need to go no worse than 10-6, something I’m not sure they can do.

  16. Brett

Need the Phils to sweep the Mets today to put the Reds one game out heading into the weekend.

    • Doc

Reds are off today so cannot be more than a half game swing either way.

    • still a red

Still have to worry about the Giants and Diamondbacks. Mets and Giants have a slightly tougher schedule perhaps. Diamondbacks not so much. Of course, for Reds, the Cardinals and Pirates are not ‘gimmes.’

  17. Redsvol

Abbott with the big, big, big time outing. And Tony with the 13 pitch save.

Finally an Andujar sighting and he comes thru just like that.

Lots of leg injuries on the team – Friedl, Steer, Elly, Lux, Andujar – that they are playing thru but obviously hurting performance. With they would have Dl’ed them once during summer to give them a breather but now it’s all hands on deck.

The Athletics are a very up and coming team. I’ll be happy with a series win. We aren’t sweeping them.

Would be cool to see a Nick Kurtz – Chase burns matchup. Power against power.

    • Indy Red Man

And if Andujar can rest up today and play. He was 5-12 with 2 doubles, 2 HRs in his last series in Sacramento. Lux hasn’t been going well so we need him.

Andujar and Burns would really be nice adds!

  18. Tom Reeves

This team with the worst owners, worst front office, worst manager, worst hitting coach, and worst young players, just pulled within two games of making the playoffs by playing hurt and finding a way. Reds fans who expect the worst are probably shocked.

    • Roger Garrett

Please add the worst TV announcers and some of the worst fans.Whats shocking to me is that on almost every other major league site you read the same things.Yankees and Dodgers sites for example. How can any fans of those teams be upset?Guess fans are just fans I guess.

      • Tom Reeves

The funny thing is I think Jeff Brantley is the best in the biz as far as broadcasting goes. He’s an excellent analysis and his play by play has gotten better every year. I would totally listen to a Tommy Thrall/Jeff Brantley simulcast of the TV/Radio versions of the games. If the team could figure it out, I’d narrow it down to just those two, I think fans would be a lot happier with the broadcast team.

LOL, if fans can ever be happy…

  19. Klugo

Quality ABs vs very tough late game relievers have gotten us here over the last week. This team has faced their share of adversity and have failed plenty. If they could just channel those lessons learned into winning plays, this team could make some noise if they could just sneak in.

    • SultanofSwaff

No one would want to face our starting pitching. And you could see Burns doing what Wainright did for the Cardinals his rookie year. At least that’s how I imagine we thread the needle and get to the world series lol.

  20. Mark Moore

I gave up some slumber and got the W in return. Did not expect Abbott to trot back out there for the 8th but he handled it well. That’s a HUGE deal.

The bloop single by Andujar just made me smile. Big turn after the robbed HR.

And I’m definitely on the Hayes in Red bandwagon. He looks VERY comfortable in his current mode.

    • TR

The Reds probably got the best defensive third baseman in the ML’s, and either the hitting coach or someone else is apparently helping Hayes on offense.

      • Marks

I think with Hayes its a classic case of change of scenery. He was a very high draft pick, expectations were high, and Pittsburgh believed in him and gave him a long term contract. He struggled living up to. No different than getting a new job and it does not work out. You make a change and things start comming together

      • Tom Reeves

It could be the pressure is right-sized for Hayes. He had to carry the entire team in Pittsburgh. With the Reds, he just has to do his job – defense like no body’s business and put the ball in play. And I can see where Valaika would be very helpful to that type of player… A player who’s lookin to crush taters??? Not so much.

  21. Mark Moore

Watching Tatis in RF I might just be on the Elly to CF bandwagon. He’s good at SS, but he could be world-class in CF.

    • Makk s

He is not good at short He has the most errors in MLB playing a position where you have to be very good. You can’t hide poor defense at short. Center field is a very demanding position. You are backing up the outfielders on every fly ball. You factor in when elly is on base running its a lot of where and tear on your legs. It very well may shorten his career a few years. Lots of pluses and minuses with moving him to center

      • Doc

Who cares? He’ll be with another team for those lost years if the Tampa model is followed.

      • greenmtred

He’s a mixed bag at short, and is still learning to play it at the MLB level. He makes plays that few if any other shortstops would make, and then blows a relatively easy play. I don’t believe that errors prove anything at this point: great defensive shortstops like Ozzie Smith had lots of errors early in their careers. For that matter, didn’t Doug point out the other day that Arroyo has lots of errors in MiLB?

  22. jessecuster44

Lots of fun when this team puts together two exciting wins in a row. Every game is a playoff game.

  23. SultanofSwaff

Most important win of the season. Abbott was nails, Tony has the guts of a burgler. With our starting pitching, we have a chance. Chase Burns added to the bullpen Friday? Yes please.

Meaningful September baseball is not for the faint of heart!

    • Marks

Reds have to eccentually win every night and depend on 2 other teams losing. Reds could play 800 ball the next 18 games and not make the playoffs. The math is not in Reds favor. They can’t worry about what the other teams do. They just have to win and hope the others lose

      • Indy Red Man

Well you have to go by recent history to try to predict the last 2 weeks.

SF is tied w/the Reds and has 7 more with LA. They’re 2-4 vs LA so far

The Mets were 45-24 on June 12 and now they’re 76-70. Thats 31-46 since that time. They’re just obviously not that good, but they could hang on of course. I don’t think they’d have to be great to catch them. 85-86 wins might do it and they have the tiebreaker

  24. Oldtimer

It does happen often but …

Sept 15 1964. Reds 79-65 but 8.5 games behind Phillies.

Sept 27 1964. Reds 91-66 and 1 game ahead of Phillies.

Reds lost 4 of next 5 games at home.

End of season. Reds 92-70 and 1 game behind Phillies and Cardinals.

      • Oldtimer

Typos galore BY ME. No way to edit RLN posts.

Yes, Reds and Phillies tied for second, one game behind Cardinals.

I meant to say does NOT happen often.

I was at the September 30th game. 1-0 loss in 16 innings.

    • Dennis Westrick

Sadly, as a young whippersnapper, I remember that season! Let’s finish this thing!

      • Jim Walker

I was at the Reds’ penultimate game of 1964 vs the Philles and witnessed the triple play turned by the Phillies and the eighth inning meltdown on pitching and defense, which caused the Reds to blow the 3 nil lead they had built despite the triple play and lose the game.

That experience probably played a role in forming my ongoing view of baseball and shows through in the comments I make here.

  25. A.B.

No question about it, I am ready to get hurt again.

  26. Roger Garrett

AA put on his big boy pants especially after the Reds went up 2-1.Going back out for the 8th tells me all I need to know about him and Tito.Thats big league stuff right there and even if it didn’t turn out well whats not to like about it.That sends a message to his team if they were watching and to his manager for having and you can insert you own words here to do it.Thats leadership at the highest level.Reds came back late against an awesome pen on back to back nights in must win games. As one man continues to say watching the Reds is not for the faint of heart.BIg hits by Elly and what can you say about Andujar who obviously can’t run yet he gets the job done.Just another player putting on the big boy pants.Tiger bares down and says not tonight although the way Sheets hits us we either should sign him or never pitch to him.GO REDS

    • jessecuster44

maybe Lodolo paid attention to what AA did.

      • greenmtred

I’m sure that Lodolo noticed that Abbott had the good fortune to avoid getting sick.

  27. Melvin

The starting pitching lately has been “flexing its’ muscles” and showing why if we actually do make it to the post season anything can happen if we just score a few runs. I’m looking forward to having a healthy Burns in the bullpen the rest of the way. It could make a HUGE difference.

    • The Duke

We have the capability to flame out like nobody’s business, but man, no team wants to face our starting pitching in the playoffs. We have the kind of guys that can take over a game, and anything can happen as long as you hang around. It’s why ownership needs to be aggressive this offseason, this type of situation doesn’t hang around long in markets like Cincinnati.

On MLB Central, Derosa does a great 5 minute breakdown of Abbott, and Elly’s RBI single.
    Great basebally stuff going on.

DeRosa was my pick for manager. He has great knowledge about hitting and baseball in general. Would have been a great pick.

      • VaRedsFan

        I wanted him too.

Don’t know what experience he has other than coaching the World Baseball Classic team previously and again this year.

        Great baseball mind and communicator.

Abbot might be the MVP of this Reds season! The way he’s stepped up is amazing.

Greene could win a Cy Young if he can stay healthy.

    Lodolo has been excellent.

Springer has been both solid and an innings eater.

And Martinez has flexed his flexibility.

Littell is going to be up and down. If he keeps the ball in the park, he going to be a great 5th starter. But I think he’ll have good starts and rough starts… a 5th starter.

I agree about the starting pitching and if the Reds can add one or two hitters with Burns and Lowder still yet to come then why not this team for the next 2 or 3 years. Its possible for sure.

    • The Duke

The window should be through 2029. Elly, Hunter, Abbott, Burns, Hayes, and whomever else we can add over the next couple years. Hopefully we have something with Sal, we can hope McLain returns to form, we can hope Marte takes that next step, but we can’t hope on everything. Management needs to get aggressive.

“an offer *too* good to walk away from” intended above

        Would have loved Cuban.
Didn’t the baseball owners reject him from the “boy’s club” previously?

      • VaRedsFan

        Uh huh…I thought so…..

Mark Cuban has a significant but unsuccessful history with acquiring MLB ownership, notably his failed $1.3 billion bid for the Chicago Cubs in 2008, which MLB Commissioner Bud Selig opposed due to concerns about Cuban’s vocal nature and potential fines. While not a past owner, Cuban recently joined a group launching the Harbinger Sports Partners Fund in May 2025, a private equity fund designed to take small stakes in major league sports teams, including those in MLB

      • Jim Walker

Yes, but 2008 was a different Commissioner in a different era 17 years ago. Through his NBA experience, Cuban has been to a lot of places Manfred seems determined to take MLB.

      • still a red

Just don’t move the team away from Cincinnati

Great to see a late inning clutch hit from Elly.
