Last night saw the Reds take a lead into the 8th inning before the Phillies scored four runs to put the game out of reach for a struggling offense. Tonight Cincinnati will try to even the series up against Philadelphia in their 3-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm ET. If you are in the greater Cincinnati area this game will also be on Fox 19.

Brady Singer

It’s been a bit of an inconsistent season for Brady Singer and coming out of the All-Star break has exemplified that as he allowed seven runs in 2.1 innings in his first start, and four runs in 3.2 innings in his last start but threw 13.1 innings of 1-run baseball with 18 strikeouts in the two starts between those.

The splits are pretty big for Singer. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a low average and now power while showing a solid walk rate. Lefties, though, are hitting for a good average and showing plenty of power while also walking at a solid rate. Not shown below is big home/road splits, where hitters have a 154 point lower OPS and Singer’s ERA is 3.36 at home compared to a 6.02 ERA on the road.

Ranger Suarez

Having an All-Star caliber season, Ranger Suarez was passed over because he would not be eligible to pitch in the game. Like Singer, Suarez has had two tough starts in the four since the break. In his last outing he allowed five runs on nine hits to Baltimore in 6.1 innings in a game the Phillies lost 5-1.

The splits for Suarez favor right-handed hitters this season. They are hitting for a higher average, walk more, and hit for more power. Lefties rarely get a chance to face him and in four of his 17 starts he hasn’t faced a single left-handed hitter. When they do get a chance against him they do very little in terms of hitting or walking. Not shown below is that he’s been significantly better on the road where his ERA is nearly three runs lower (1.48) than it is at home.

News and Notes

A lack of offense

The Reds game notes today had a few depressing stats about the lack of offense this season. The Reds have scored one run or less 26 times this season. That’s the worst they’ve done through the first 120 games of the year since 2015. They’ve scored two or fewer runs in 41 games this season, which is the worst since the 2009 season through 120 games. And then there’s the Reds scoring 33 runs in 10 games this month, which is the third fewest in baseball despite scoring 14 runs in one game.

I can’t believe how far Austin Hays has fallen. Just imagine if we can get him back to where he was in the 1st half for this last month.

    • Votto4life

Yeah, good thing the Reds didn’t extend him. Although, he could be their key free agent signing again this winter

  2. RedsMonk65

Is Espinal manning 3B and hitting 9th tonight? Other outlets posting lineups have him there. Or maybe a late switch has been made…

    • Mark Moore

Gameday still shows Espinal. We know it will be one or the other.

  3. BK

I noticed the Phillies are essentially platooning at three lineup spots if last night and tonight are normative. They have the second-best record in MLB as of this morning. Several have criticized the Reds for platooning over the last few years. Perhaps a better question is how the Phillies have achieved success with this strategy, and what adjustments the Reds need to make when they do platoon?

    • greenmtred

Good observation, BK. My facile answer to your question is that the adjustment the Reds would need to make to their platooning is to have better players in the platoons. An answer that doesn’t help.

      • VaRedsFan

Gold star for the correct answer.

      • BK

Of course … I think it’s the weak side of the platoon where the Reds have missed the boat. It seems to me, the weakside player needs to be good against LHP, and good enough against RHP to not need to be pinch hit for if their partner has already been burned. Both players need to be close to league average defensives at the spot the Reds where the Reds play them, too.

But I suppose the overall observation is that the strategy can work if executed well. It’s not necessarily the liability many assume it to be. Like so much in pro sports, it simply comes down to getting the right players to execute the strategy. It would seem that finding some upgrades for the weak side of a couple of platoon players would be a cost-effective strategy for a small-market club.

  4. Mark A Verticchio

This team looks really tired and kind of uninspired. I think when your offense is this bad it kind of deflates the entire team. I also think the pitchers are facing too much pressure and are afraid to make a mistake. Unless the offense finds new life this team, who is 2 out, could be out of the playoff picture very soon. An unexpected win tonight would really help, but I don’t think anybody is counting on it. That is why last night would have been a huge win.

  5. docproc

Espinal, not Hayes, is batting 9th and playing 3rd.

    • Doug Gray

Fixing it now. I swear I saw Hayes but my brain is making things up apparently (not surprising, it’s not as young and good as it used to be)!

  6. Mark Moore

Pig Kicking yada yada yada …

Need a win against a tough pitcher. Then another win tomorrow. Hopeful but, frankly, not overly optimistic.

  7. JohnnySofa

Aside from Sunday’s explosion, Reds are averaging just a tick more than 2 runs per game in August. Amazing that the Reds’ own pitching has kept them competitive in most of these games.

  8. RedlegScott

OK, Mark, I’m going to go ahead and beat the dead horse. The new life for the offense was supposed to be acquired by the trade deadline. And we all know it.

    • Mark Moore

Can’t disagree with you … what we see on the field is what we get. And we just aren’t getting enough runs scored most days.

  9. Brett

Yeah, good luck tonight Weak Hitting Reds facing Lefty Suarez and his 296 ERA. With Singer giving up 5 in the first and Francona using his pathological complacency and apathy running things what could possibly go wrong?

  10. Dennis Westrick

Don’t look now but the Cards are only ONE game behind the Reds AND they are playing the Rockies tonight & tomorrow! Need a win tonight but not very hopeful as the Reds are up against their Kryptonite, a LEFTY SP!

Didn’t watch last night’s game but found it curious that Abbott pitched the 8th inning when he was at 80+ pitches after 7 innings! Plus, the 8 LOBs didn’t help!

Another unfortunate loss AT HOME when the Reds were FOUR OUTS from a win!

Need to reset, refocus and battle every at-bat and hope THE GOOD Singer shows up tonight!

    • Dan

Abbott looked totally in control, all the way through the 2 K’s to start the 8th. I believe he was at about 92 pitches after the 2nd K.

I thought it was a perfectly good decision to leave him in. In fact, if Tito had yanked him after the 2nd K in the 8th, I would’ve been surprised and a little ticked off. I suspect people on here would’ve been griping about over-managing or something.

With 2 outs, no one on, and the 8th and 9th hitters coming up, it seemed like he was cruising. (And to be honest, whoever the pitcher is, you have to be able to close that inning out w/ no damage.)

      • Dennis Westrick

Don’t disagree with the decision for Abbott to start the 8th! Just concerned that this late in the season the total innings pitched become a concern and one would hope the Reds BP could get the final six outs!
Unfortunately, the train went off the rails quickly after Abbott got the first 2 outs!

  11. Andrew Brewer

We need “rally magic” or Homeruns tonight. And they both need to happen more often. Who will step up and make it happen tonight ?
Losing that opener was a tough blow, but if the Reds respond when they’re up against it, then we have a team that refuses to lose.
    We’re about to find out.

  12. CincyDo

As long as Steer battting 2nd and MM batting behind Marte, this anemic offense gets weaker if that’s possible. Maybe Francona will give up on this attempt of batting Steer 2nd after we’re swept. SMH. But go Reds 🙂

    • greenmtred

There aren’t a lot of good choices on the bench or in the batting order.

      • CincyDo

I know. But it’s ok to keep MM at 2nd. We’re not getting much out of the top of the line up anyway. We got 14 runs out of batting Anjular, Hays, Marte, and Steer in that order. Why not keeping it like that for a couple games for continuity?

      • greenmtred

Okay with me, but it is a different pitcher and maybe this lineup profiles better against him than a different one would. No evidence of that in the top of the first, however. And why is Elly hitting so many grounders? Is this recency bias on my part?

  13. RedsGettingBetter

Singer was crushed in his only career outing against Phillies…

  14. JB

Espinal hasn’t homered since last August 30th.

  15. Indy Red Man

Huge game for Singer’s credibility. If hardly anyone hits .300 or 40 HRs anymore then 4.50s is no longer mediocre 4th starter material

  16. CincyDo

Based on what I see, for Singerntonhave any success, he needs to establish the slider at the bottom of the zone, and then mixes in his Sinker and high cheese. Limit walks.

  17. dimondfvr

Tito says on the pregame the Reds need to make suarez work, and so the first three go down on five pitches .

  18. VaRedsFan

Queue the 5 pitch inning head explosions from RLN

  19. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds are making it so easy for the other team’s pitchers, that is coaching. You have to make them work. Also, have you ever seen a team hit so many soft pop flies.

    • Doc

Maybe the other team’s pitchers are making it very hard on Reds hitters!

  20. RedsGettingBetter

I don’t think it’s a good idea to be so aggressive against Suarez to fail so quickly. Just 5 pitches in the first inning is helping to a long outing from him

  21. dimondfvr

Apparently some posters believe swinging on first pitches is the way to go!

  22. Roger Garrett

Reds just don’t even compete at the plate.Five pitches and 3 outs in the first inning.Singer just barely set down.Where oh where is the fire the desire the hitting coach the leadership on the field and in the dugout. This is little league stuff. Please just blow this up next year and start over on offense.

    • Mark A Verticchio

I could not agree more, let Francona stay but a new hitting coach. They are not even competitive.

  23. RedsGettingBetter

Singer being efficient through 2 innings on just 19 pitches…

  24. Andrew Brewer

Suarez is a soft throwing lefty. It’s up to the Reds to foul off the close ones, and hit the ones they like.
    Singer looking sharp thru 2.

    • Andrew Brewer

Well, that was laughable at bat in the 2nd by the Redlegs… Just pitiful.

  25. dimondfvr

That’s the way to make Suarez work! He had to throw Seven pitches that inning! He can’t last much longer!

  26. RedsGettingBetter

Reds hitters being retired in order in just 10 pitches through 2 IP by Suarez is insane

  27. CincyDo

Look like both teams have early dinner plan to go to.

  28. Mark A Verticchio

This is a joke 2 innings on 12 pitches, zero hard hit balls. I am sorry but several AAA guys could do better than these clowns.

    • Roger Garrett

Tito’ message was well you know not heard I guess.

  29. WCRon

12 pitches thru 2 innings for Suarez. Unbelievable

  30. Roger Garrett

Not to be out done we do it again in the 2nd inning on 6 pitches.Where is Mark when we need him.I got it Mark you just can’t make stuff like this up.

  31. 70times7

I hope whoever is gonna work with Hayes on his hitting isn’t the same guy working with the rest of them

    • Roger Garrett

Now thats funny. Can’t wait to see what happens in the bottom of the third.

  32. dimondfvr

Singer is taking care of business on his end!

  33. CincyDo

Maybe both teams just agree to skip 3-7 innings, start 8th where Reds typically win or lose game?

  34. Andrew Brewer

Singer however continues to impress ! Nothing like his last outing.

  35. JB

Did anybody catch the game the other night of the first female umpire? She was behind the plate and the first pitch was inside and nowhere near a strike. She called it a strike. She fits right in.

    • VaRedsFan

Saw that….then they kept showing the clip of her ringing up a batter with a clearly inside pitch.

  36. Mark A Verticchio

singer doing his best, but you know the Philly hitters will find a way to break through, Reds not so much.

  37. dimondfvr

Singer doesn’t want the hot bats from his teammates to cool off!

  38. RedAlert

McClain man …. Just pitiful !!!!!

  39. Andrew Brewer

Trevino comes thru with base knock !

    • Andrew Brewer

And Espy follows suit ! 2 on with one out in the 3rd.

  40. Jason T.

Does the Reds offense know that the all-star break is over? That these games count? That they’re playing for a wild card spot?

Please give Singer some run support!

  41. MK

At what point does McLain get the opportunities to acquire some splinters? Espinal might create less of a lineup whole.

    • Andrew Brewer

Espinal does well down in the order. We can’t seem to find anyone for the No. 2 hole.

    • CincyDo

Espinal always hits well against LHP

  42. RedsGettingBetter

It’s unbelievable…Friedl made a hard contact only to hit for a rally killer double-play… It’s absurd what is happening with the Reds offense

  43. VaRedsFan

When the Reds swing at the 1st pitch they bat .268
When they don’t they bat .236

When they put the ball in play on the 1st pitch they bat .354.

      • Doc

A lot more than a comment posted about a double play when the play is not totally over and appeals reverses the call at first.

  44. Jason T.

Steer clutch again with RISP. Great at bat. McLain are taking notes?

  45. Andrew Brewer

Whoa, there was no DP, and Steer has Dbl’d to bring in two ! Smokin’…

  46. Indy Red Man

Caught a break, but MM swung at a 3-2 ball as well.

    • JB

Down and away. He has to know that’s coming with 2 strikes. He should just stand there and not swing. Period

      • Jason T.

Rightfully so we question CES on it yet McLain gets passes. McLain just isn’t that good of a hitter. Last 30 withstanding he’s been given a ton of playing time and the results aren’t anywhere near consistent.

  47. Mark A Verticchio

Big hit by Steer and thanks to the bottom of the order = two guys who don’t play that much. Elly needs some time off, he is an easy out right now.

    • Jason T.

Elly might like to play all the time and I appreciate that he wants to be in there but it’s such a long season, especially with the Bristol debacle and lack of days off, he needs a day off.

      • Jason T.

True, that heat and humidity is no joke.

  48. RedsGettingBetter

Good job by Steer… Go Singer, hold the lead on

  49. RedsGettingBetter

As Abbott did yesterday, Singer retired the first 12 Phillies batters in order…

  50. old-school

The Singer/India trade is a nice win for the Reds. I loved India but hes looking more and more like a healthier grittier version of Nick Senzel

Singer bWAR 1.1 and gives the Reds a chance to win every 5th day.
    India bWAR -0.1 .236/.321/.339/.660. OPS + 85.

India is headed to a non-tender FA after winning ROY and now a future bench/role player.

Senzel/India/Stephenson/McLain all righty bats with such high promise that fizzled or are actively fizzling from such high expectations.

  51. Mark Moore

Very nice 4 innings from Singer. Backing him with those 2 runs feels HUGE at this point.

We continue to hold on to our butts.

    • CincyDo

Whats the scariest roller coaster in the world? That’s how we Reds fans feel every time Reds play 🙂

      • Mark Moore

        +50,000

I was a HUGE coaster fan in my younger days. Loved the loops, the turns, the pneumatic take off (Hollywood Studios).

One time only on the Demon Drop at Cedar Point and wouldn’t do that again for love nor money.

    • Jason T.

Singer minus a few duds which happen to most pitchers has been solid and durable.

  52. CincyDo

Singer is pounding the strike zone with sinkers and sliders. No walk or hit batter so far, that is big.

  53. Matt McWax

Mid-rotation Singer threw an ace slider there to Harper.

    • CincyDo

It’s a beauty. Slider at the bottom of the zone is how he earns his paycheck

  54. RedsGettingBetter

Andujar! blast! he is there for doing that

  55. Jason T.

    Thank you Andujar!
    #Redscleanuphitter

    • CincyDo

He’s been better than we expect. Hays almost made it back to back there. There’s hope for Hays.

  56. JB

3 runs!! This team is smokin hot right now.

    • VaRedsFan

The key is getting 1 more run

Reds are 51-16 when scoring 4+ runs

  57. Jason T.

McLain with strikeout 120 and 121 on the season tonight…

  58. RedAlert

McClain CANNOT lay off breaking ball –
    AWFUL !!!

  59. Mark Moore

Base hit??? You’ve got to be kidding me. Cowboy maintaining his calm, incredulous tone.

    • JB

First hit of the game on what should have been a error. What happens if it’s the 9th and that’s the only hit?

    • Pharmer85

Official scorer has been awfully kind to Elly this year

    • dimondfvr

I hope the official scorer will reconsider!

  60. JohnnySofa

Let’s be honest here: MM has been the biggest disappointment of the season and I don’t think it’s close. If he were even hitting an Espinal-esque .252 with an OPS simply at .700 from that #2 hole, this team would have several more wins — enough to be among the three WC leaders.

    • Mark A Verticchio

Let’s be honest he should have been sent down a long time ago to get himself right. Too late now though.

    • Pharmer85

CES in the running for most disappointing. Thought he would be a stud. Didn’t happen

      • JohnnySofa

The expectations for CES were based on wishes. He was coming off a .190 season w/ a .513 OPS.

  61. Indy Red Man

Don’t get these guys with the Civil War beards? Seems like it would be miserable in the summer

  62. Roger Garrett

It really points to the offense as a whole when a platoon player is picked up and inserted at cleanup on a winning team in mid August.Thats how much Krall and others don’t get it and I guess never will about the state of the Reds offense.Again you can’t make this kind of stuff up you just can’t.Andujar is the the lone wolf in the pack in that he doesn’t strike out much and gives a professional at bat almost every time.

    • RedAlert

Well stated !!! Exactly right Roger !

    • JohnnySofa

He has been a pleasant addition, no doubt. I’m humble enough to give Krall credit for picking him up. But yeah, the fact he’s a presence at cleanup (unlike Stephie and Hays) says something.

  63. MK

Worse than Elly’s defense on that missed one hopper is Larkin’s excuses for him. Big Leaguers make that play.

    • Hanginwithem

That’s an error. Always has been, Always will be.

  64. RedlegScott

It sure has been a roller coaster ride with Singer.

  65. RedsGettingBetter

Singer has been really good thus far tonight

  66. Jason T.

Nice double play to help out Singer. That’s nice to see.

  67. CincyDo

Minimum 15 through 5. Let’s give Singer a few more runs here.

    • Jason T.

Just not too many that they won’t score any tomorrow though, lol.

  68. Indy Red Man

Cashed Andujar rbi +160. I remember how hot Jerry Hairston Jr was when we got him.

    • Jason T.

Cha-Ching. Always nice to cash in on those.
Pretty safe bet too with a LHP.

  69. Andrew Brewer

Suarez just pitched around Espinal, for real !

    • Andrew Brewer

And now 2 on for Spencer Steer, one out.

      • Andrew Brewer

Bases now loaded for Andujar, 2 down…

  70. RedsGettingBetter

Friedl has been hit by pitches constantly this season

  71. Mark Moore

TJ got hit … go figure … 😮

  72. Roger Garrett

Andujar stays at 4 and DH until he crashes and burns so we will see.His mid teens strikeout rate keeps him in the game at the plate and has enough pop that you can’t just say here it is hit it.

    • Andrew Brewer

close enough, but the Reds come up empty in the 5th.

  73. VaRedsFan

Dang…Turner saved a run there with the diving stop.

  74. RedsGettingBetter

Nice chance wasted to put the game away… I don’t like it

  75. JB

Andujar swung at ball 2 and then grounded out. Bummer

  76. GPod

this is where the Reds needed to add on and again that has been a problem all year….seem to get men on but cannot cash in

  77. Indy Red Man

Couldn’t blow it open. Mets up 3-1. Have a feeling they sweep Atlanta. Hope I’m wrong

  78. RedsGettingBetter

Tito should be alert…back-to-back singles and Shwarber is coming

  79. Jason T.

Deja vu of 8th inning yesterday…
    Shut them down Singer!

    • Jason T.

Thanks you? Shouldn’t type with a summer flu.

      • greenmtred

Just put a comma between them. It works.

  80. Mark Moore

Out of the 6th still in tact … Cowboy commenting on MattyMc staying in front of that ball.

  81. RedsGettingBetter

Despite Singer got out unscathed that was a sign of what this tough Phillies lineup could do so quick…I think Tito will send Singer to the 7th anyway but two guys should be warmed up in the bullpen

  82. CincyDo

5 straight sliders to Schwarber. Gave him nothing to drive. Great job Singer.

  83. Jason T.

Nice piece of hitting there McLain.

  84. Mark Moore

I believe you call that one “clutch” 😀

  85. Andrew Brewer

2nd and 3rd with one out for Trevino….

    • Andrew Brewer

And Trevino comes thru scoring 2 ! Reds up 5-0.

      And I’m outa here.

  86. Jason T.

Clutch Trevino! I like his moxie. Fun guy to root for.

  87. Mark A Verticchio

Trevino out of his slump = better than Stephenson.

  88. RedlegScott

    And there it is!
(How long do we continue with our other catcher? Just wonderin’.)

  89. Mark A Verticchio

Espinal and Hayes are almost the same player, what a dumb trade.

    • Roger Garrett

Exactly and why nobody that actually matters saw that is beyond what my pea brain can see I guess. You have Stewart at 21 that seems to have a hit tool we could use even right now and where does he play going forward?

    • greenmtred

Espinal is a good fielder, Hayes is a great fielder.

    • greenmtred

The other issue, as others have noted, is that Espy is a good sub and doesn’t do well as a regular.

    • SteveAReno

Not exactly, Espinal can play more positions if needed. He has more versatility on defense. Espinal will also have a higher OBP this year for the Reds.

  90. VaRedsFan

    The oppo hits keep coming.
It’s amazing that they abandon it for games at a time.

    • Jason T.

Exactly. That’s the strength of this club. Boggles my mind that it’s abandoned so frequently.

    • greenmtred

Memory issues? Irrational exuberance? I don’t get it either.

  91. GPod

Espinal is good when he’s not called on to play everyday…great to have off the bench

  92. Indy Red Man

So we won the series vs the Mets in NY. If we win the series in Gabp in September and win the season matchup 4-2 then does that mean we win the tiebreaker if records are tied at the end of the season?

    • Mark Moore

Could be. Not sure about all the tie breaker rules, but you’ve got to think head-to-head is at the top of the list.

  93. Roger Garrett

Yes could be we need to 60/40 with Trevino now getting the 60.Got to ride anybody right now that is helping on offense.Yes even Espy with another hit is in the mix.No time to play favorites its all about production right now.

    • Indy Red Man

Stephenson is a better hitter then Trevino

    • old-school

They are pretty much 50/50 now . Stephenson may not get 400PA

Stephenson only has 280 PA in mid august.

Stephenson disappointing as a Reds core hitter, but hes still a decent bat for a catcher. Just not what we all hoped

      • Roger Garrett

Of course and by no means do you throw him away but what will it cost next year with Trevino already under contract?Doesn’t Trevino get 4 mil and so what will Tyler get?

      • old-school

Good question . I think Trevino gets $5.75 million for next 2 years. Stephenson is making $4.9 million this year and if Reds tender final year of arbitration likely $6 million?

Do the Reds pay $12 million for 2 catchers next year?

I think they do as there arent any other options but why the other arb eligible players like Fraley and Espinal are likely to be non-tendered- to pay for Singer and Stephenson arb raises.

    • JB

For once Roger actually look up a stat. Since July 1st Stephenson 21-80 .262 BA
      Trevino 9-53 .169. BA.

      • Roger Garrett

Your right of course.I should have done exactly that.

  94. Mark Moore

We get Steer up in his favorite spot … RISP and a chance to play some add-on.

  95. old-school

Nice hitting tonight. Suarez is a 10 year old whining at the ump.

  96. GPod

the philly pitcher and TV guys getting upset with certain pitches called balls….they are pitches that are just barely touching the box on the screen….those pitches can be called either way IMO

    • Jason T.

There’s something in that water in Philly… nutty city…

  97. Jason T.

So close Steer… thanks for the sac fly though.

  98. Mark Moore

Gave it quite a ride. God the add-on, so that’s good.

  99. RedsGettingBetter

Steer was near to hit the grand salami

  100. Mark Moore

Everybody thought that was out … 😮 😮

  101. Mark A Verticchio

Nice to see Elly at least give it a ride.

  102. GPod

thought Elly had that one…..but as far as the discussion on Reds catchers….I just hope the reds have someone in theie system that will be their future catcher (and can hit)

    • JB

Duno can but he is in A ball. Has 8 errors so far this year.

  103. Jason T.

Didn’t they say the seams or something are different on MLB baseballs this year? Higher? Tighter?
Feel like those were out of here in years past?

  104. RedsGettingBetter

it’s raining folks…No problem if this game is called rained out

  105. LDS

I check just in time for a rain delay. Singer is having a good game and the Reds are 6-0 after 6. It’s a sacrifice, but I say let’s just call it official and play game 3 tomorrow.

  106. Mark Moore

Rain delay … how ’bout they call it 😉

  107. Indy Red Man

Hinds and Stewie w/HRs tonight but not off Sale. He only went 2 innings. Petty bad again…5-4 Bats after 4. Petty disappointing. I like Williamson better then those other guys if he comes back healthy. He had some moments w/the Reds before

    • Jason T.

High on Williamson. He was on the cusp of being quite good.
Petty and Maxwell can’t figure it out at AAA. Too many walks.
Petty is just 22 so I’m willing to exercise some patience.

      • JB

Petty has seemed to have lost it after his MLB debut

      • Jason T.

That’s a good point. He does seem lost since then.

    • Votto4life

Hopefully, one or more of Rodriguez, Hinds and Stewart become good major league hitters.

  108. SteveAReno

Espinal has been on base three times tonight-more than anyone. It’s awesome to have him come and knock up that pitcher. But, no one has knocked him to score. Strange.

    • Indy Red Man

Espy .324 in July. Very simple…plays every day and he’s terrible, but spot starter he’s solid. I still don’t want him subbing in for Marte with a 1 run lead in the 6th. Then Tito leaves in Lux in the 8th with a lead? Lux throws like a Dad with his t-ball aged kids. His throw home last night was painful

      • JB

That throw was more like t ball aged kid than the dad.

  109. Indy Red Man

Braves fighting back 5-1 is 5-4. Mets are scuffling big time

    • Votto4life

Baseball fans in New York will have a massive meltdown, if the Yankees and Mets both fail to make the playoffs.

      • Jason T.

All of those $$$ spent too… doesn’t guarantee wins.

    • JB

Braves always seem to have the Mets number.

  110. Mark A Verticchio

Braves tie it 5, Cardinals just starting.

  111. Mark Moore

Looking like rain until well after my bedtime per TWC’s radar.

Hanging on a bit longer, but I’m really hoping they call it. Brilliant outing by Singer. I seriously doubt we see him again tonight. That, of course, makes me nervous.

    • Jason T.

Looks like they’re rolling up the tarp.
Singer was outstanding. Always great to watch. Starting pitching again doing its thing.

    • RedlegScott

The additional three runs make breathing a little easier. Ty, Trevino and Steer.

  112. Indy Red Man

Could get within 5.5 of the Cubs. They’re down 4-0 to the Jays

  113. RedlegScott

I realize this game isn’t over yet, but this team is something else, isn’t it? Plundered one day and revived the next. An absolute roller coaster of a season.

    • Jason T.

It’s been a wild ride, that’s for sure!

      • RedlegScott

Just when you think they’re dead and buried. It’s like that Monty Python movie where that old, feeble dying guy on the cart raises hand and says, “I’m not dead yet!”

      • Jason T.

Ha! Good one. Love some Monty Python.

    • VaRedsFan

      Wow…that’s terrible.
Many thought he would have been a great addition….me included.

I think he was injured before the deadline, which saved some unfortunate team.

  114. Indy Red Man

SO much for the Braves….2 outs nobody on 5-5 and now its 8-5 Mets

Just saw Luke Weaver is a FA lol. Come back and actually help us this time please! You owe us! Oldtimer would hurt himself doing cartwheels in his yard

    • VaRedsFan

      LOL. He would.
Looks like the Yankees knew how to use him.

  115. Hanginwithem

    Defensive replacement, Hayes for Espinal….

      • Jason T.

It’s hard not to root for Hayes. Guy smiles and seems like he’s having fun.

  116. RedlegScott

Ashcraft unscathed! The baseball gods have been appeased at last.

  117. RedsGettingBetter

Ashcraft got the job done with a scoreless frame

  118. Dennis Westrick

Who was that wearing Ashcraft’s uniform? WOW! A 1-2-3 inning from whoever that was!

  119. Jason T.

Good Graham tonight, that’s pleases us all.

    • VaRedsFan

Harper swinging 3-0 when they are down 6-0 REALLY helped.

  120. Old-school

I think id ride ashcraft to start the 8 th

    Off day tomorrow

    Go batter to batter

    • Dennis Westrick

With you on that! Ride that horse!

    • Old-school

      Oops

      Thursday

But still get some innings from not guys named pagan barlow or santillan

  121. RedlegScott

Hays the only hitless starter, but he did get a walk and scored. That’s something.

    • Jason T.

Nice to see the walk and the deep fly ball.
Needs to remember not to kill every ball every time and not try to pull everything.

    • VaRedsFan

Hit one to the wall too….
      Horseshoes and all..

  122. Dennis Westrick

Mets have doubled up the Braves 1-5! Drat!

  123. RedlegScott

Good job, Suter. Who pitches the 9th? Is Mey still around? 6-0 lead…

    • Dennis Westrick

Would be nice not to have to use Big Tony or Pagan! Will be the top of the order for the Phillies though!

  124. Jeff morris

Mclain not seeing the ball well or something….he has struck out 3 times tonight.

  125. Mark Moore

Been watching on the small screen whilst First Wife and I watched one of our shows.

Let’s wrap this up, boyz. Need to keep pace with the Metropolitans.

  126. Mark Moore

So much for the shutout 😀

We’ll give him that for that spectacular play he made on us.

  127. RedlegScott

Starting pitching outstanding. Relief pitching great (minus the gift to Harper). And we scored 6 runs. Doesn’t get any better than this. Let’s do it again.

  128. Mark Moore

Nice. Under 3 hours even with the rain delay.

    Onward to tomorrow, friends.

  129. Dennis Westrick

Nice job by Moll despite the mistake to Harper!

  130. Jason T.

    Let’s go Reds! Victory secured.
Series win tomorrow would be fantastic!

  131. Old-school

August 12 and Reds still fighting and still no sweep

    Back to 5 over

  132. LarkinPhillips

Big Reds win tonight. Tomorrow is time to put up and prove it with Greene starting in rubber match. Tony and Pagan and Barlow all somewhat rested.

  133. RedsGettingBetter

REDS WIN! Singer was masterful and the bullpen slammed the door after the rain delay… Phillies avoided the shutout just with 1 out to finish the game…I had liked to blank them actually… At least , Reds won’t be swept in this series either…

  134. Dennis Westrick

Nice, and necessary, bounce back win for the good guys! Doesn’t look like the Reds will gain any ground on the Mets!

The Cubs’ PCA just struck out with the bases loaded! Blue Jays still up 4-1 in the 7th!

  135. RedlegScott

Singer v Suarez didn’t look good on paper. Throw out the paper.

  136. VaRedsFan

Reds softened up Skenes so that the Brewers could swoop in and knock him around.
    4 IP 4 ER

  137. Roger Garrett

Moll at 93/94 works for me.Good win and the bottom of the order 7 8 9 comes through minus the 3 strikeouts by MM who did double that set up the two run hit by Trevino.Reds beat a lefty and a pretty good one.

  138. Mark A Verticchio

Brewers could come to town Friday with a 13 game win streak.

  139. Stan

Ashcraft gets a lot of grief on here but he has been victimized several times by Bad News Bears defense of the Reds.
