Zack Littell

In his first start since being acquired at the trade deadline Zack Littell struck out a season best eight and allowed a run in seven innings.

The splits this season aren’t very big for Littell. Most of it boils down to right-handed hitters finding a few extra singles along the way. Those extra singles carry over to a slightly higher on-base percentage and a slightly higher slugging percentage.

Mike Burrows

After beginning the year in Triple-A, Mike Burrows joined Pittsburgh in late May and has been with the Pirates ever since. He hasn’t pitched against the Reds in any of his 14 games this year. The last time out he struggled, giving up three homers and six runs in 4.2 innings to the Giants.

The splits against Burrows are quite big. And they are reverse. Right-handed hitters have hit for a good average and plenty of power. They don’t walk much at all. Left-handed hitters, though, hit for a low average, walk a lot, but don’t hit for any power.

The last I heard from Tito was he was progressing and may not pitch this year for the Reds but trying to get him so he’s ready to have a normal off-season throwing routine for next year spring training.

      • MK

Since he is on the MLB IL does he get credit for a full season of service time?

    • Jim Walker

I recollect that several media sources have reported within the last 10 days to two weeks that Lowder is not expected to pitch competitively this year.

      • Jim walker

@mk> yes, players on the MLB IL receive full service time credit for the time spent on the IL.

  1. David

Just in terms of looking at the starting pitchers, I would say the Reds should win this game today. But you don’t play the games on paper or on the Internet, so somebody has to show up and win this thing.
The hot teams this week in the AL are the Guardians (Guardians??) , Red Sox and the Mariners. Did the Mariners do enough at the Trade Deadline to improve? Looks like it.
The hot teams this week in the NL are the Brewers (who ARE these guys?), the Phillies and the Padres (bad news for the Reds). The Padres are only 3 games behind the Mighty Dodgers.
The Mets had a really lousy week (1-9) so that’s good news for the Reds.

    • JayTheRed

Honestly, The Reds are probably chasing the Mets now. The Padres made a lot of quality moves at the deadline to improve their team.

As for the Brewers your quote about “Who are these guys” is what I have been saying all season. They always seem to find some marginal player for another team and suddenly when they are on the Brewers they turn into great players. There are a few exceptions on that team to this but overall, I am always like; how do they keep winning.

Mariners already had pretty great pitching they just needed to get some hitters, and they did that so now they are on a roll.

  2. old-school

Greene is taking Burns start on Wednesday. Off day Thursday. Brewers Friday. Burns is at exactly 100 innings, what he threw at Wake Forest last year.
Does Burns go to the bullpen Wednesday when Green comes back and Martinez/Littel/Abbott/Singer/Greene become the new starting 5 with Martinez headed back to the bullpen August 20th when Lodolo could come back?

Martinez and Burns in the bullpen for the final 6 weeks would be a massive upgrade. I might be tempted to use Burns as an opener on Friday with Martinez to follow against the Brewers.

    • Mark Moore

I keep thinking Burns in the pen the same way the Rays used Price in a similar situation.

      • Tom Mitsoff

It seems like a great possibility for great success.

  3. Will the Red

This lineup is… questionable. But the biggest thing to me would be putting Hayes at 2, in front of Elly might get him some better pitches to hit. Not saying it would help for sure, but can’t hurt.

Out how about mixing Elly to 2, then Marte, Andujar, Lux and Hays, so at least a series of tough at bats in a rough. Cab really extend that to Trevino, a bit, too, depending on the day, although I know he’s come back down to earth of late.

    This lineup though…

  4. Mark Moore

Looks like a warm one there in Jolly Roger Ballpark. Hope our hits fly and their hits go nowhere.

Pig Kicking, et.al. … hope springs eternal even in August.

  5. Kevin H

Took a break and Reds went on a losing streak. I take the blame. Watched yesterday and followed the comments. They won.

So gonna do it again lol… oh and also got the coffee ready like yesterday.

    • LDS

Way to shoulder the load @KevinH. Carrying the Reds into the playoffs is a heavy lift, but someone has to do it.

    • Dennis Westrick

What to do? What to do? When you take a break, the Reds lose! When I take a break, the Reds win!

      • Kevin H

*Shrugs *.. since we r both watching they go on a 10 game winning streak!!!

  6. JB

No game for me today. Sucking up the sun at Watkins Glen Race track. Good luck Redlegs.

    • Mark Moore

I remember the traffic way back in the day during a race event. We normally went through Watkins Glen to get to summer camp in Tyrone, but that weekend you needed to go the “back way” up 17 to Bath and then to Tyrone.

  7. Gpod

Elly in full swing mode lately….swing & maybe I will hit it

  8. Jason T.

Come on Reds. Hope Littell is lights out.

  9. Jim Walker

And here we go (again). Took only 9 pitches to retire the Reds in the first, with only one ball put into play.

  10. Tom Mitsoff

Pirates have four guys hitting below .200 in their starting batting order.

    • Dennis Westrick

Yet they have outscored the Reds 10-4 in the first 3 games of this 4-game series!

      • Oldtimer

7 runs in 1 game. 4 runs in the other 2 games. That’s 11 runs for PIT. Red have scored 4 runs in 2 games and 0 runs in the other.

  11. Gpod

If Sadek was not able to blurt out 1000 stats during the game, do you think his brain would malfunction?

    • Jason T.

Absolute meltdown would be imminent! He just never really stops talking. I want to like the guy, I really do but he’s something…

      • Daytonnati

Mary Beth Ellis has a great observation once, “he needs to let the game breathe.” A little dead air won’t kill anybody. Vin Scully learned that early.

    • Mark Moore

It might, Rabbit … it just might. 😛

  12. Dennis Westrick

If the Reds “hit” like this against the Phillies and the Brewers, they won’t win a game!

And did I read correctly, in Doug’s intro, that the Pirates SP (Burrows) gave up 3 HRs and 6 runs in his last start?

Burrows will probably pitch a shutout today!

    • Oldtimer

Score is 4-0 Reds in the third inning.

  13. GreatRedLegsFan

Next ST can turn out to be very interesting considering the number of position players that may be competing for a roster spot: Rodriguez, Stewart, Hinds, CES, Dunn, Benson.

  14. Tom Mitsoff

Sliders have been eating Hays alive. His hitting approach has changed drastically since early in the year.

  15. GreatRedLegsFan

Hays is now going thru the “HR swing syndrome”.

  16. RedAlert

Give me Rodriquez or Stewart over Hays the rest of the year – HES TERRIBLE

  17. Indy Red Man

Almost every starter we face lately just got bombed by somebody else….then they promptly take us to school

  18. Jason T.

The splits for the Pirates at home versus on the road is insane.

  19. RedAlert

Give me Rodriquez or Stewart over Hay the rest of the year – HE’S TERRIBLE !

  20. Gpod

And the strike outs keep on keepin on for the reds

  21. RedsGettingBetter

Reds offense keeps struggling through the first two innings against another unknown Pirates pitcher

    • Jason T.

Must be the pluralized cousin of Joe Burrow. Cranking out those strikeouts early.

    • greenmtred

He may be unknown, but he throws gas and he has a good change up.

  22. dimondfvr

How in the world do you hit a grounder to Elly on a possible double play ball and get no one!?

    • Mark Moore

Slow grounder and Lux at 2nd didn’t help matters at all.

    • Kevin H

It was hit to Lux, Elly started and then changed course tried to get to bag. It was too late. Things like that happen

      • greenmtred

Lux bobbled it a little, and I think Elly expected him to run to the bag instead of of throwing it to him.

  23. VaRedsFan

Burrows before his bad game last time out.
    6 ip – 0 runs
    6 ip – 1 run
    5 ip – 2 runs

  24. Indy Red Man

I kinda need a waffle is retired to end the threat of the .100s

  25. dimondfvr

Littell worked his way out of that one!

  26. RedsGettingBetter

Littell fought against the bad luck and bad defense to get out of the big jam. unscathed..

      • greenmtred

The Lux/Elly on the ballet of futility.

      • VaRedsFan

The ball was hit to the SS side of 2B.
With Elly Deep in the hole there wasn’t much chance of getting anyone…maybe Lux could have tried a long throw to 1st moving away from the play….but not really.

  27. Tom Mitsoff

I’m not sure we all realize just how good of a pitcher the Reds acquired in Littell. Nothing flusters him, and he has incredible control.

    • RedsGettingBetter

Tom, the only weakness Littell has shown is literally his homerun-prone

    • greenmtred

I agree, Tom. He’s 2nd in MLB in percentage of strikes, and 2nd in first-pitch outs. And he has the highest percentage of GIDP. And he seems unflustered by runners on base.

      • Old-school

        He fields his position too!

        Trevino seems to connect

They said his splitter was best in long time against cubs

  28. Mark Moore

Littell says he’ll do it himself.

  29. CincyDo

Teams are attacking Hays with sliders and Elly change up until they prove they can’t hit it. They whiff on these 2 pitches badly. Good escape by Littell.

  30. Kevin H

Henry Davis is a great example of a “cant miss prospect ” he hasnt lived up to the hype. Which is why I myself am cautious that Stewart or Rodriguez would immediately help or help at all at big league level. By all stats in minors, yes they should. Yet, prospects r just that.

    • RedAlert

Some of these guys right now on this roster should also be considered prospects lol

  31. Jason T.

The Hayes revenge tour starts today. Solid contact there.

  32. dimondfvr

Reds arenow 1-28 with Runner in scoring position!

    • Jason T.

That’s a scary level of ineptitude.

  33. Indy Red Man

Come on??????????? Friedl swings at 2-1 way inside then takes 2-2 right down the middle.

  34. Mark Moore

    Nice job, Elly.

Now head for 2nd since Lux made it vacant for you.

    • Mark Moore

Or just trot home. That works just fine as well.

  35. dimondfvr

We scored! We scored! We scored! Sorry….just haven’t seen that two often! LOL

  36. Gpod

Finally a hit with a runner in scoring position…keep it going!

  37. Old-school

Ke’bryan hayes hits a liner double

Gotta score and lux and elly stretch the inning and get the run

    Andujar massive bomb!

    • JayTheRed

Andujar Looking like a decent pick up in small sample size so far.

    • Mark Moore

You can take the credit for that.

      • greenmtred

It appears that Kevin is still watching. Or paying close enough attention that it would count the same in the eyes of the baseball gods.

  38. Jason T.

Bomb from Anduijar! Keep him hitting 4th please!

  39. greenmtred

    Things suddenly look much better.

  40. Indy Red Man

KB Hayes and Andujar and Littell. Krall is a genius! Lol

  41. RedAlert

Angular should be in lineup somewhere every game from here on out – he has proven it

    • Kevin H

Yep, and one last thing in Hays. I wonder if they can put him on il, and bring up Rodriguez or Stewart? LOL.. Hays is lost rigjt now

  42. Indy Red Man

I’m going to toot my horn….I called for Andujar after Pitt let him go.

    • Old-school

Read my post on other thread before this game started on Andujar

Hes what candy was supposed to be x can play LF too

  43. dimondfvr

Please sit Austin Hays on the bench. He isn’t helping anyone!

  44. Old-school

    That wasnt a fence scraper

I wanted Yandy Diaz but bears a resemblance physically

  45. LDS

So sign Andujar for next year and get rid of Espinal.

    • greenmtred

Andujar isn’t a utility player who can play middle infield. Hays probably won’t be here, though.

      • LDS

Yep, I’m all for moving away from “Utility”. that’s my goal. I view utility as an excuse when you have a poorly constructed roster. I don’t view it as a strategy.

      • greenmtred

Players need days off, and you can’t have a different player backing up each position.

      • VaRedsFan

        All teams have utility.
That being said, the Reds don’t need 3 of them.

    • JayTheRed

No. Espinal is a nice bench player to have at the worst and can fill in almost anywhere defensively. Just don’t play him every day starting.

  46. Oldtimer

Reds up 4-0. Reds pitcher is throwing well. RLN commenters are ignoring both.

  47. CincyDo

Hays struck out on a slider…again. He has to fit the fastball when he sees it to have any chance of getting a hit, just like Elly did in his last PA.

  48. Tom Mitsoff

Andujar came in with the reputation of hitting much, much better against lefthanders than righthanders — the prototype platoom player. He has hit righties very well in his games with the Reds, and really needs to be in the lineup every day until he proves otherwise.

    • Jason T.

Absolutely true all around! He’s been quite impressive. I’d keep him in the 4 hole.

    • Jason T.

Been really impressed with him so far! Seems to have the baseball smarts.

  49. Kevin H

Anyone know why CES got pulled after one ab?

  50. RedAlert

Would really like for them to sign Littell next year for this rotation – strike thrower and knows how to pitch …

    • Tom Mitsoff

Agreed. He has impressed me greatly. He’ll get a big contract (from someone) after this year if he keeps this up.

    • Indy Red Man

You kind of need a spot in the rotation, but he looks great. Lets see how he deals with Gabp specials though….leads mlb in HRs allowed

      • Jason T.

Ball definitely flys at GABP. Steinbrenner Field has produced the 6th most home runs this year so the ball seems to fly out of there too. One positive I guess is largely they’ve been solo shots.

    • greenmtred

We lauded Littell too much and it went to his head.

      • VaRedsFan

The pitchforks will be out shortly.

  51. MK

I keep reading comments here about the do nothing front office but today with Littel, Trevino, Lux, Hayes, and Andujar; 5 of the starting lineup were acquired by trades since 2024 and three since last month. If we include free agent Hays that be 6 of 10 of lineup acquired by the front office.

    • Indy Red Man

Hmmm. Pitcher with the most HRs allowed. Worst hitter in mlb. Standard backup catcher except a turtle amputee is faster. Lux who leads mlb in seeing eye singles.

      What else you got?

    • Hanawi

That doesn’t mean those players are good or that they gave up appropriate value to acquire them.

    • Justin T

And you think they have helped that much? Because of those transactions, they have a lineup with no power. None of the weaknesses were addressed at all, and they are now committed to the .230 hitting Hayes for a long time.

    • Jason T.

Littell is apparently human. Gotta shake it off Taylor Swift style and get back to what worked. A couple left right over the plate and a couple nice swings.

  52. Indy Red Man

Bunch of hits with 2 screamers to Hayes for outs. Not good

Offense needs to keep going in the worst way

  53. greenmtred

I think that the comments are not referring to an absence of activity, but to absence of really impactful activity. Positively impactful, that is.

    • VaRedsFan

Overall they were all just league average guys. The provide a decent floor, but not much of a ceiling.

  54. Roger Garrett

Reds only have 3 hits after 4 innings with the 3 run blast by Andujar the difference in this game right now.Power plays.Going to have to score more then 4 today.Wake up offense.

  55. greenmtred

Do we suppose that Reds, unaccustomed as they are to scoring more than two runs, figured that four runs would be more than enough?

  56. Indy Red Man

Mets lead 3-0. It would benefit us to win the game

  57. Indy Red Man

He is throwing meat up there. Better go to the pen quick

  58. greenmtred

That strike three splitter to Cruz was the best Littell has thrown today.

  59. Indy Red Man

How to almost instantly blow a 4 run lead

  60. RedAlert

Amazing how the Reds continue to falter against one of the absolute worst teams in baseball …4-0 lead gone in a flash

They got guys that can’t hit the ball in the ocean against any other pitching … unbelievable

    • Kevin H

Pirates are playing good baseball. Plus they are 6 games over 500 at home. Their trouble has been on the road.

That said, yes Reds need to win these games.

  61. Gpod

You might think up 4-0 against a last place team…you could cruise to a non-stressful win….but not the reds

  62. Mark Moore

Tough game for Littell. Battled and couldn’t sit them down often enough.

    • Gpod

He picked a bad time to lay an egg….2nd shortest outing of the season….many of our starting pitchers could only dream of being given a 4 run lead

  63. Indy Red Man

We need Smalls to provide a complete analysis on how the Reds are actually average and should be expected to do mediocre things lol

    Our expectations are the problem

  64. LDS

And that inning @OldTimer, is why the RLN commenters were being reticent.

    • Mark Moore

Or take 3rd even with a good throw. That also works.

Now, Mr. Hays … let’s talk about your AB here 😐

  65. RedAlert

    Andujar a professional hitter ….

  66. Roger Garrett

Making contact would be good for starters right here.

  67. CincyDo

C’mon Hays. Wayyyy overdue. Let’s deliver here.

    • Jason T.

Horrible at bats for quite some time from Hays.

  68. Mark Moore

And the statue play from Hays AGAIN!!!

    • Roger Garrett

You can’t watch 95 in the zone for strike three.Hays has to be moved down or set for awhile please

  69. Indy Red Man

Hayes omg. Make up an injury and IL him. He’s completely lost.

Marte though….double machine. Lets get atleast 1 more

  70. RedAlert

Time for Hays to be relieved of his duties … absolutley ridiculous …. I am sick of watching this guy suck at the plate !

No way Stewart or Rodrigues could be any worse !

  71. Mark Moore

Another 2B from Marte. Cost us a run, though with the GR2B.

OK, Steer. You like this situation.

    • Mark Moore

THANK YOU SPENCER ALL THE WAY AROUND!!!

  72. Jason T.

Nice at bats from Elly, Andujar and Marte. Need to score more though this inning.
Hays needs to ride the pine.

  73. Gpod

All I ask is that Hays be dropped to a lower position in the lineup….is that too much to ask ?

  74. Frogem

Need to raise the wall. Gr2b are boring.

  75. Tom Reeves

People were slamming Krall for getting Andujar and I can’t figure why: .305/.796

    • LDS

It’s not specifically getting Andujar. It’s that he didn’t get the pieces the team actually needed, like an OF bat and a lights out reliever. Some of the things the team has needed for a couple of years and he continues to ignore, counting on castoffs, has beens and maybes from AAA.

    • VaRedsFan

Not sure anyone was barking at that one. It was my favorite of the 3 deadline moves.

  76. Indy Red Man

There you go boys! Steers ball is way out at Gabp

Elly 111 mph, needs to work on launch angle in the offseason. Thats 440 feet if he lifts it

  77. VaRedsFan

Oh Steeeer…please don’t abandon that beautiful oppo gap double

  78. CincyDo

Offense comes to okay today. Inserting Andujar in the line up injects energy into this offense. I go to war with Marte and Steers any day of the week. They are clutch.

  79. Indy Red Man

Marte might lead the NL in doubles if he played there. Fast and sprays the ball all over and it takes off in the alleys. Hard ground ball up the middle is a double if the CF is shaded the wrong way

  80. CincyDo

Inserting Andujar in the line changes this offense so far. I go to war with Marte and Steers any day of the week. They are clutch. Marte is probably the only Red that can hit slider.

    • greenmtred

No rest for weary fans. I may have to resort to whisky.

      • greenmtred

It’s powerful medicine. Needs to be carefully considered.

  81. RedsGettingBetter

I don’t like how this game is going…Pirates are often threatening inning by inning…

  82. Mark Moore

Bike Helmets to the rescue once again.

    • greenmtred

But it feels more like a stay of execution than competent business as usual.

  83. RedAlert

Lux is a thrill a minute in the field – defensive liability anywhere you put him …Steer saved his tail right then

  84. Indy Red Man

Moll! I still get a warm fuzzy when he comes in….first impression and he was the best guy we had when he first arrived. 34 in Jan. though….need a young lefty with a big arm. Maybe Williamson? He didn’t throw all that hard, but was good vs lefties.

  85. Roger Garrett

Ramirez is back out there keep it going offense.

  86. Roger Garrett

Gift run at third got to get him in.

  87. greenmtred

Mark: have another word with Hays. 2nd time might be the charm.

  88. Kevin H

After getting two hits Elly looked more relaxed and didnt chase.

  89. Indy Red Man

Hoping we get a 5 run lead so Tony only has to face a couple guys

  90. RedAlert

Can’t continue this with HAYS …dude should now be a bench piece ….. don’t want this guy back next year …. Keeping somebody out of AAA that should already be up here (you
    Awake Krall ???)

    • CincyDo

He transformed into CES, can’t hit slider to save his life.

      • greenmtred

He seems to hurl himself at pitches early in the count and swing out of his shoes.

  91. Indy Red Man

Who’d we trade Moreta for again? He’s better then Gibaut and some of these guys we rolled out there this year

  92. Kevin H

One thing about the game of baseball. Failure happens way more than success

Hays definitely struggling at the moment. My goodness

    • greenmtred

He’s really damaging his prospects for a big contract, I would think.

      • VaRedsFan

Which means the Reds might become interested if he comes cheaply.

  93. Indy Red Man

Mets went from 5-0 to 6-5. Can’t stop Milw right now

  94. Kevin H

This is where I was upset Reds didnt get a shut down reliever at deadline. No offense to Moll or Barlow. Lol

  95. WCRon

What I would give for a1-2-3 inning. We never seem to get it with our pen

  96. Kevin H

Ashcraft, Santillan, and Pagan cant pitch 4 out of 5 days all the time.

    • Roger Garrett

You right Kevin and this is another spot we needed and didn’t get any help in.Risky move to bring in Mey because of his control at times but what do you do.

  97. VaRedsFan

You think a few Red’s players have issues with lefties?

O’Neil Cruz bats .111/.221/.192 vs lefties

    • JayTheRed

Ouch! I almost think I could hit better than that against lefties.

  98. Mark Moore

DP impossible and that lead out was hard enough. Way to go Hayes.

    • RedAlert

He gets his glove on it 99% times it’s an out … can for sure pick it

    • greenmtred

He wastes no time fielding and throwing.

  99. RedsGettingBetter

Mey’s lack of control is always a risk

    • greenmtred

Truer words were never spoken. And now McCutcheon is going to pinch hit.

  100. dimondfvr

And now Mey can’t throw a strike!

  101. RedAlert

Throw the ball over the plate man !!!!!

  102. Indy Red Man

Seen enough of Mey. What about Phillips down there?

  103. RedAlert

Why is it ALWAYS LIKE THIS with this bullpen !!!!

  104. WCRon

Mey can’t throw a strike to save his life

  105. RedsGettingBetter

Reds bullpen relying on Mey to high leverage situations is an evidence of weakness… That’s on Krall blame

    • Jim walker

You took the thought about the Reds desperate bullpen situation right out of my brain.

    • greenmtred

Glad to, VaRedsFan. Evan Williams on the rocks with a splash of deep well water.

  106. Roger Garrett

What else do you do?Krall got no help. Its the same story as last year.Wait till Green and Lodolo get back but you have to play games while you wait and wait and wait and wait.

    • Kevin H

Yep, reminds me of 2021, when reds waited for bullpen help. Then if I remember correctly the starting pitching collapsed

  107. dimondfvr

And now, which Ashcraft shows up today!

  108. Indy Red Man

2 outs and a man on 1st and he walks 3 in a row. No more big league pay for you this year. He needs to go back down tomorrow….thats ridiculous

    • VaRedsFan

      Unfortunately, that’s Moll’s run.

  109. dimondfvr

Okay. Ashcraft gets the Reds out of a BIG jam!

  110. Mark Moore

    Sam, “Strikes are good.”

Oh yeah. I think we can all agree on that.

  111. Roger Garrett

Its on Krall and nobody else period.Mey is risky anytime and is your way way ahead or way way behind guy he just is.His stuff is good but he has no clue and never has as to where it may go.

    • Mark Moore

I think Mey has a bright future … but today he showed he has a lot more to learn about pitch location. Even the swing, swing, swing Pie-Rats didn’t go for it.

  112. RedAlert

Send Mey down and let him stay there rest of year – RIDICULOUS !

And while you’re at it , bring one of those young hitters up and sit Hays’ tail on the pine

  113. Kevin H

Man, Moll got charged with that run. I thought the runner he walked was out on a force at 2nd???

  114. WCRon

Send Hays and Mey down Don’t even bring them back to Cincy. They are a drag on this team

  115. Roger Garrett

Krall did nothing significant to help the team,he just didn’t.Reds are in a bar fight every game with pop guns against real guns. They are just good at dodging bullets most of the time.Ash Tiger and Pagan fight like crazy but they all need a week off or more.Tiger on pace to appear in 80 games which in today’s game is insane just insane.

  116. Mark Moore

All the way to the concourse!!! 😮

    • DaveCT

He has had to claw his eY back to his power but if you’ve seen Steer in BP, that’s exactly his power stroke.

  117. Indy Red Man

The Bats finally beat Toledo 9-6. Hinds 3-5 with 2 doubles and a triple. Stew 1-4 w/a double.

    • Jim walker

With two big series coming up at GABP, Hinds or Benson could not be any worse than Hays right now. If they put him on the IL now, he might get healthy enough to help out down the stretch.

  118. DaveCT

Six outs to the finish line seems like a long way to go today.

Being typed as Steer hits one out, but still.

  119. CincyDo

For a young player Marte impresses me with his ability to hit with 2 strikes and that he can hit any pitch. Strong and fast too.

    • DaveCT

Was just thinking how much he’s grown as he laid off the slider at the top of the zone.

    • JayTheRed

I am starting to come around on Marte. After last year suspension and looked terrible in the Bigs striking out more than almost anyone I had a lot of doubt going into this year. I have been pleasantly surprised by his new attitude and play overall.

  120. dimondfvr

That does feel better. Nice one Steer!

  121. Jason T.

Thank you Steer! Gold glove 1b and has some pop. Hopefully he keeps getting better and better.

  122. Indy Red Man

    Maybe we’ll see Benschoter today?

    • DaveCT

      I like Sam!!

Undrafted free agent, like Spiers, albeit in the shortened 2020 draft.

      Big, 12-6 curve.

  123. Roger Garrett

Steer can and does hit hangers and don’t know if he has ever hit one that far but that was a bomb close to 440.WOW

  124. CincyDo

Worth repeating. I go to war with Marte and Steers any day of the week.

    • greenmtred

Again, I agree. Marte may prove to be the big bat, but we need another one. Steer, McLain and Elly rediscovering their power would make everything look different.

    • Indy Red Man

Steer hit .211 in July and was hitting .160 in August coming into today. Glove is great though and the hits will come if he’s fully healthy

  125. Indy Red Man

Here we go now lol. Cmon GA. He’s a mess.

  126. RedAlert

Give it up Graham back in business …

  127. Indy Red Man

Goes down and in to a lefty w/2 strikes thats swinging at anything today

  128. Indy Red Man

    Send him down. He’s horrible

  129. old-school

Reds have 9 runs and this game is a nail biter agaisnt the pirates.

Bullpen needs infusion of Burns and martinez and SP needs Greene and Lodolo back. ‘

  130. Mark Moore

Keystone cops routine and we barf up more runs.

  131. Jason T.

Come on McLain. If you’re not going to do it with your bat, and you’re not, gotta be money on D. Terrible play.

  132. old-school

McLain throws it over Elly 6’7 head?????

    You cant make this up

    • Mark Moore

      Well … I think he’s only 6-5 … 😐

      He completely air-mailed it.

  133. Jason T.

    Ashcraft just way too inconsistent.

    • Pharmer85

Shaky for sure but should have been out of the inning with just one run allowed

  134. Tom Reeves

I’m finally ready to say McLain might need a trip to Louisville.

  135. RedAlert

Would love for Francona to just light these guys up ONE TIME coming off the field ….. makes me wish Lou was in the dugout …. You think he would sit back with this circus going on ???!!!!!!

  136. Jeremiah

Boy this game is a thrill a minute it looks like!

This would be a really bad loss I think if Pgh somehow wins it. Hopefully some more runs in the 9th or Pagan just shuts them down with a run lead.

    • TR

How to possibly ruin a Sunday for a Reds fan who were once up 4-0 and now they’re holding on 9-8 in the 9th. inning.

  137. JB

Just got home from the track( nice to live 10 minutes away) and surprised to see the game still going. Ashcraft bring Ashcraft. Like I said they have Barlow,Tony and Pagan and a bunch of crud. Wth McLain?

    • Mark Moore

This is the month Seneca Lake hits 68 degrees, isn’t it?

      • JB

Really warm here and will be 90 for the next week. The lake is 72 today. 🙂

  138. greenmtred

If we needed another reminder of why defense is important, there it is. It does seem as though McLain has made a number of inexplicably bad throws this season.

  139. CincyDo

Mercy, Ashcraft. He can ruin the season in a heartbeat. Steer Hr proves huge.

    • Justin T

Marte could be turning into a star in front of us. Keep it going, young man. He plays the game hard, with a big smile. He is one of the only players we have who looks confident at the plate and goes where the pitch takes him. Very disciplined up there for a young guy, he clearly has worked on his craft and has his arrow turned around and pointed back up in terms of his potential.

  140. dimondfvr

Today we have given up eight runs on fourteen hits to the last place Piratres! Not looking forward to the Phillies and the Brewers!

  141. Kevin H

Man Ashcraft seems to have bad luck when he pitches. What a fun ball game.

    • JB

He puts himself in those situations. He isn’t good. He is a 6th inning guy.

  142. Justin T

The play earlier where de la cruz was late to the bag and both runners were safe on the DP attempt is an example of the bad fundamental defensive SS he is. It wont show up on the stat sheet so there will always be arguments if he is a SS or not. His footwork and awareness are so inconsistent it drives me crazy watching him. He makes the highlight play. With his size and athleticism he would make highlight plays anywhere on the diamond. We need consistency, he will never be consistent over there. He is a corner outfielder, that would solve the problem.

  143. greenmtred

Hays gets a hit! If he can do it…….

    • JayTheRed

I told my friend if Hays didn’t get a hit I wouldn’t watch another game this season. He must have heard me. haha.

      • VaRedsFan

We could have used you earlier Jay.

    • Lex

Thank you Noelvi! Man did we need that one!

  144. JayTheRed

Marte!!!!! Holy crap that guy is on fire right now.

  145. DaveCT

    Bring … us … a … SHRUBBERY!!!

    — The Knights Who Say Ni!

  146. Mark Moore

A Big Boy 3-run blast to dead CF!!!

We’ll take that, Marte. Sam and Tommy weren’t sure he got it.

    • VaRedsFan

Tommy never knows if they got it.

  147. Magi210

Marte has cut down the largest shrubbery in the forest with a baseball.

  148. Hanawi

Hopefully Marte has finally put this one to bed

  149. VaRedsFan

Marte visits the bushes in deeeep center.

  150. CincyDo

Marte. Running out of compliments for this kid.

  151. MK

The trade deadline sure took care of the right handed bat in the outfield problem. Hayes letting Marte to the outfield has been huge. And additionally Andujar.

    • Hanawi

By putting someone already on the team out there? They could have done that by bringing up Stewart to play 3rd or bringing up HRod to play LF instead of giving away value.

      • greenmtred

Always assuming that Stewart and HRod prove able to hit MLB pitching. The fact is that there is a power hitting outfielder starting for the Reds now. And a 3rd baseman who saves runs instead of making every throw an unwelcome adventure.

  152. Mark Moore

Lob wedge with a back check = base hit.

Sam’s having trouble seeing where the balls are going from the mountain-top perch they occupy.

  153. JB

Elly,Friedl and Marte would be a great outfield. 🙂

    • greenmtred

      They actually would, wouldn’t they?

    • Mark Moore

I don’t think Elly is headed that way. Marte’s arm definitely plays in RF. But that would be something to see with TJ in Left and Elly in Center. They could cover the biggest of parks.

    • DaveCT

Why don’t we just get a good outfielder instead of moving our best player?

Better yet, our best player off his best position, which also happens to be the most important defensive position, thus weakening that most important position?

All in order to have our best player in play somewhere he has never played, where there is zero evidence he will better than he is currently? I mean, just watch O’Neill Cruz — impressed? I’m not. But I also watch a real CF, Julio Rodriguez, play every day …

Maybe we should move Elly to 1B because he is tall? Or catcher because he has a great arm. Or the bullpen? Same logic.

      • greenmtred

DaveCT, I’ve never been in the move Elly to outfield camp, but there is certain logic to it. I agree that it won’t happen.

  154. dimondfvr

Milwaukee has just tied it up in the bottom of the eighth!

    • JayTheRed

I need to start going to Brewer games, so they start losing more games. haha.. Might work.

  155. Ronnie

Something tells me we will still be biting our nails in the bottom of the ninth. Just how it goes w this team.

  156. LarkinPhillips

Huge couple of minutes in Reds country. Marte hits that 3 run home run and Helsley blows save for Mets allowing the Brewers to tie up at 6 in the 8th.

    • VaRedsFan

Helsley gave up a big bomb last night too.

  157. Kevin H

One thing about it. This team goes into a offense funk collectively it seems and then bam. Let’s up they keep it going against phillies.

    • JayTheRed

They know the Phillies are a good team so they will play their hearts out hopefully.

  158. JB

Was watching the Brewers a couple of weeks ago and the Brewers 1st and 3rd basemen had a combined .217 BA 12 or 17 HRS and 80 RBIs. They were close to last in the league. Yet they are best team in baseball.

  159. Mark Moore

At least one more to put it out of slam range, please.

  160. Mark Moore

LeCure is growing on my in the WLW booth. He’s a work in progress, but I’m seeing improvement.

    • Kevin H

Listening to him this week while driving for work and yes I agree. Sam is fun to listen too.

    • greenmtred

Yeah, I like him, too. He’s unpolished in a good way. Heart on his sleeve.

    • JB

He can’t be any worse than some of the guys in the bullpen. Give him a shot and he might be a keeper.

  161. old-school

RLN never agrees on anything. Can we all agree put Marte in RF every day and way up in the order? Maybe you move Elly to 2 and Marte to 3? Thats the 2 best players right now.

    • greenmtred

I agree, O-s. I rarely disagree with you, anyway, but this one is obvious: Marte should be a fixture in right field for the Reds.

      • old-school

It’s been a good Sunday. Did you really eat blueberry cake and play croquet in the dark? Who did you lose to?

      • greenmtred

I did. My daughter and her family came up and she, her husband and her younger son beat me, my wife and her older son. We don’t know the rules, though. The cake was great.

      • old-school

        That’s awesome GMR.
I graduated a son, married a daughter, went to Fenway and old Charleston with my better half last weekend.

It’s been a fun summer and reds are still in it!

        Best to you and family.

    • Optimist

Have to believe he’s the RF from here out, and thru next spring. As for the order, anywhere from 2 to 6 works, to vary with opponents.

    • VaRedsFan

      I 2nd this…
Who’s in charge of emailing Tito?

      • Mark Moore

I’ll bring it up when I have breakfast with him on Tuesday morning 😛

    • Mark Moore

I was thinking Elly at #2 and Marte at #3. They both would likely see some pretty good pitches. Hard to avoid both of them every time through the line-up.

  162. Doc4uk

Agree. Ashcraft is way too inconsistent. How about moving Steer to second base with Stewart at 1B. H Rod in LF .

    • greenmtred

Steer is such a good first baseman that I’d be reluctant to move him. He has been a better hitter in the past, and may be getting healthy enough to be good again. And just like that, Steer makes another good play. I’d also be reluctant to give up on McLain.

      • old-school

I agree GMR. Id run with this infield and catching core and Marte and Friedl every day in RF/CF and Andujar every day DH/LF with Lux against righties and hays against lefties and Fraley as a bench lefty bat.

Need Greene and Lodolo back and maybe Burnes opener/Martinez long guy and releiver.

  163. Mark Moore

    3. Measly. Outs.

    That’s all we’re asking, boyz.

  164. RedlegScott

Okay, I’m going to ask: when is the last time we scored fourteen runs or more? When is the last time we gave up eight runs and still won? It seems like it’s been awhile for both questions.

    • greenmtred

And the question we may not want answered: how many runs did the Reds score in the game following the fourteen run game? But I’m not going to harsh the vibe: this, finally, has been fun, and it has been great to comment along with all of you guys.

      • LarkinPhillips

3 verse Mia following 24 verse Bal
0 day after giving up 8 and winning verse Hou

    • RedsMonk65

      I think this is right:

Reds 24-2 over the Orioles April 20
Reds 13-9 over Astros May 10

  165. Mark Moore

3-4-1 Bike Helmets and a nice job by Suter getting over there to finish it.

  166. JB

Hope they didn’t use up all their runs for the coming week. You know how they are

  167. Jeremiah

Reds offense dominates! Nice not having to use Pagan.

  168. Mark Moore

OK … it’s a weird game and if we somehow gain on the pack ahead of us, so be it.

Back home for the Phanatics tomorrow. Catch you all then.

  169. Dennis Westrick

Well, that was interesting! Especially the inning that Ashcraft was imitating a major league relief pitcher!

  170. WCRon

At least Santillan and Pagan got a day off

  171. Kevin H

What a great game. Other than Mey 3 walks the bullpen shut it down, taking away the Mclain error Ashcraft battled as he always does.

  172. CincyDo

Able to rest Santillan and Pagan. That helps. Great offense outburst for a change. Good series. 2-2 is what it should be. It could have gone 3-1 or 1-3.

  173. dimondfvr

Milwaukee just won on a home run in the bottom of the ninth!

  174. RedAlert

Brewers walkoff HR !! 1.5 games back folks !

  175. Indy Red Man

Sure Milw will cool off by the time they come to Gabp. Louisville lost 16 in a row to Toledo and finally beat them today. We’re due to win a series vs Milw

    • Jim Walker

It was one of those days in Louisville. Hinds had a 95.9 EV double off a *LH pitcher* (of course, his triple and other double off of RHP were both well over 100 EV, topping out at 111.5mph). 😉

      • Melvin

Good thing he didn’t try to challenge a pitch? 😉 He also had a 97.8 EV line drive out to SS. One might say he’s hitting the ball hard.

  176. Roger Garrett

Offense picked up the Reds worn out pen and Reds win.Marte is a no brainer to play in right every game the rest of the way and Andujar is also a no brainer at DH or left every game the rest of the way.Andujar only walks at a 4% clip but only fans at a 14 % clip. Its just who he is this year and in his career.Hits both lefties and righties.Dude can flat out hit.
