The Cincinnati Reds are still trying to recover from the debacle at Bristol that not only cost them a day off but it also crushed their bullpen after having to fill eight innings on Sunday thanks to Major League Baseball attempting to force a game to be played in a downpour on Saturday. Not that the Reds weren’t at fault, either, because they also had access to the radar that showed it was going to rain all night and they still sent Chase Burns to the mound when the game began and burned him in the process. Nick Lodolo leaving early with a blister then compounded the issue more and ate through the bullpen again.

The Reds called up Yosver Zulueta to take Lodolo’s spot on the roster for the time being. He pitched in just one inning, though. Two days ago in Chicago he pitched an inning and gave up two runs on three hits to the Cubs in a 6-1 loss. Now he’s heading back to the minor leagues for a fresh arm as Cincinnati is calling up right-handed pitcher Sam Benschoter. He was called up on July 1st and spent three days with the Reds but never entered a game. If he gets into a game this time around it will be his big league debut.

The 27-year-old has spent all season in Triple-A with the Bats outside of his three days with the Reds in early July. He’s made four starts and 25 relief appearances, throwing 66.2 innings with a 3.78 ERA.He’s walked just 15 batters this year and has 57 strikeouts to go along with seven home runs allowed. You can see his career stats here.

A starter for much of his professional career, he can give the bullpen some innings if they need it. And they very well might given the current situation.

Doug, Zulueta pitched 2 shutout innings last night in addition to the 1 inning against the Cubs on 8/6.

Is this really where we are at? We trade Taylor Rogers so we can run out AAAA pitchers from Louisville? So Mey, Moll, Zuletta, and Bent improve the team? There were tons of bullpen pieces available at the deadline for like #30 prospects and we didn’t think that would help. Bring up Hunter Greene for a few innings tonite if you are that worried about Burns going 6.

Where are the reds at? Mediocrity at best!

I suppose having a guy in your system whose name starts with a Z is of some value.

Zorro, the sign of the Z! 😉 In the Disney version when I was a kid, he was Robin Hood and the Cisco Kid rolled into one. I was amused that in that take, Pancho was a Spanish soldier (Sergeant Garcia),

Look at tonight line up Tito decides to rest Steer, great defender, for Andujar. Playing Andujar is fine and giving Steer a day off I’m most likely fine but why is a struggling Hays batting 4th with Fraley on the bench against a right handed pitcher.

      • Jim Walker

Do you sometimes feel there is some entitlement evidenced in the use of Fraley and Lux? Not a loaded question. I would not be asking unless I did feel that way.

Yes, Krall announcing during the deadline that they were moving Martinez to the bullpen still bugs me. So believing that Krall has his thumb on who plays wouldn’t surprise me.

      • Noyes

I’ve seen all I need to see from Lux. He isn’t an outfielder, we have second base covered, and you can only play so many banjo hitters in GABP. He would be a wonderful bench bat if pitchers still hit. As it is, he should be starting in somebody’s infield next year. Nice gamble, didn’t hit the jackpot, move on.

I will play along with you, why is Hays playing instead of Marte? Bottom line Hays should not be in the line up period. He will soon be gone and is no part of the team’s future unless they are dumb enough to re-sign him.

      • JB

Hays has a mutual option for $12 million next year. 1 million buyout. No need to resign him.

      • Roger Garrett

Big time problem any time Marte sets for anybody. We commit to MM and Steer all year long and commit to Hayes at third and look at the offensive numbers. Then we set Marte with his offensive numbers and we struggle to score and what’s going on.I doubt if Hays or Fraley return next year so come on.

Maybe tonight is the game where Burns show us a glimpse of what he will be.

Will Reds score more than two today?

      What the man said.

That would be a very welcome shot in the arm.

I had similar hopes with Lowder last season after his impressive end of season debut, but I wonder if he pitch at all this year.

      What a calamity.

Hopefully, the Pirates lineup is just what Burns needs to put together 6+ solid innings.

Whether he has 12 Ks or 2.

I’m afraid our pitching staff seems to have hit a brick wall. Green at this point should go to the pen. Every able body needs to be available.

Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. We’ll be lucky if Burns goes 4 tonight.
