The Cincinnati Reds got a good combination of strong pitching and a good offensive performance on Thursday evening. Nick Lodolo’s six innings of shutout baseball were continued by the bullpen the rest of the way against Miami and the offense had a big 6th inning against the Marlins to put the game out of reach as Cincinnati earned a split of the series with a 6-0 win.

Nick Lodolo took care of business in the top of the 1st inning. In the bottom of the inning the Reds put a run on the board when Elly De La Cruz singled, stole second base, and then scored on a hit by Austin Hays. He was thrown out at second base on the play to end the inning, but not before the Reds shortstop crossed the plate to give his team a 1-0 lead. In the next inning Cincinnati would tack on another run when Spencer Steer crushed his 11th home run of the season to make it 2-0.

Both starting pitchers locked in for a while at that point and the score stayed 2-0 until the bottom of the 6th inning. With Cal Quantrill still on the mound for Miami, Cincinnati’s offense went to work. Noelvi Marte led off the inning with a single and TJ Friedl followed up with one of his own to put runners on the corners. Matt McLain then walked to load the bases.

Elly De La Cruz then cashed in a run with a single to make it 3-0 and then the relay throw got by everyone and that allowed a second run to come in as the Marlins chased down the ball. Austin Hays then singled in two more runs as the Reds made it 6-0 and chased Quantrill from the game as he failed to record an out in the inning after retiring 11 straight entering the inning. Ronny Henriquez entered the game for Miami and struck out the next three hitters to end the inning.

Graham Ashcraft took over for Nick Lodolo to begin the 7th inning and immediately got himself into trouble as he walked the leadoff batter on four pitches and then gave up a single on the first pitch to the next hitter. After getting a fly out, he walked another batter to load the bases. But Ashcraft got out of the jam with a grounder up the middle that made an easy double play to end the inning.

After Tony Santillan tossed a hitless 8th inning for Cincinnati, the Reds turned the 9th inning over to Scott Barlow with a 6-0 lead. He had to face the middle of the Marlins order. Barlow walked Otto Lopez to begin the inning but rebounded by striking out the next two batters. For some reason the Reds then made a pitching change to bring in Sam Moll with two outs, a runner on, and a 6-run lead. A 7-pitch at-bat ended in a lazy fly ball to left field to end the game as Cincinnati completed the shutout to earn a series split.

Key Moment of the Game

The Marlins choosing to send Cal Quantrill back to the mound for the 6th inning. He had only recorded an out in the 6th inning one time all season. The fact that they didn’t have a reliever ready and allowed him to face five batters – all of whom reached – before going to the bullpen changed the game and turned a close one into a bit of a blowout.

Notes Worth Noting

Nick Lodolo lowered his ERA to 3.38 with his six shutout innings. Since a tough outing in early June he’s posted a 2.28 ERA in his last five starts that have covered 27.2 innings.

Elly De La Cruz and Austin Hays each had two hits in the game. The two hits raised the average for De La Cruz to .280, which is the highest it’s been since April 30th when he was at .281.

The win moves the Reds back to two games over the .500 mark.

Now sweep Colorado and go into the ASG with a 5 game WS and back to 4 over .500. Give Krall a sign – make him work.

    • Mark A Verticchio

A sweep would put them at that problematic 5 games over. Even 2 of 3 puts the 3 over at the break, not great, but still in it.

      • LDS

For some reason, I thought they were 48-47. 5 games over would be their best under Francona. Playoffs are far off without upgrades.

    • Melvin

If we sweep the Rockies we’ll be five over .500 big guy and for the first time will we not? Krall indeed will start sweating knowing the pressure will be on him to actually do something.

      • CLTRedsFan

Atlanta appears to be sellers from what I’ve read on different platforms. Clearance Rack Krall may be able to bring our beloved Stuart Fairchild back for cash considerations or a PTBNL!! Let Stu be our RH RF platoon with Will Benson. I thought during Spring Training that Blake Dunn or Rece Hinds would step up and one of them would win RF on a full time basis but obviously I wrong. My better half was ticked off when the Reds let him go!! She thought he was absolutely adorable. Make my wife happy and bring him back!!

      • JB

Fairchild? Seriously? Here for the laughs

      • Tom Reeves

Consider how absurd this statement actually is – that Krall would be scared of Reds success and he’d actually be actively worried about trying to improve the ball club.

Nick Krall wants to win baseball games far more than any of us do AND he’s doing way more any of us are doing (or are even capable of doing) to help the ball club.

The fact that we’re actively rooting against and critical of the person who’s trying to deliver us a winning Reds team is the most entitled and ridiculous thing I think I’ve ever heard.

      • doofus

You have to excuse us. Our entitlement emerges from all the winning brought on by Nick Krall’s ingenious player acquisitions which are purely devoted to improving the squad and not ownership’s wallet.

      • LDS

“Nick Krall wants to win baseball games far more than any of us do” – seriously Tom, what evidence of that can you produce? That’s not really supported by his signings in the last couple of years.

  2. Jeremiah

Nice bounce back from the Reds the last few days giving hope they could still stay in the race. 2 of 3 against the Rockies would be ok, bit a sweep really would give them some solid momentum heading to the break.

    • JayTheRed

Not to be a downer, but this team has been terrible right after the Break. Go look up the numbers from mid-July to Aug 1st. It’s not exactly the best hopes we can have.

      • Doug Gray

I checked. It turns out that this team hasn’t actually played any games from mid-July to August 1st yet.

      • Leonard Smalls

        That’s a weird take.

Yes, the Reds were 12-17 in August of 2024, but David Bell, Jonathon India, Jeimer Candelario, Ty France, Frankie Montas, Julian Aguiar, and Justin Wilson aren’t walking through that door to support your pessimistic loosey-goose theory.

  3. Oldtimer

Pitching beats heating two days in a row. Pitching AND hitting at the same time wins a lot of games.

    • Oldtimer

Hitting, not heating. No edit function for me.

      • Dennis Westrick

Plus, when you get to our age there’s NO filter either!

      • MK

Thought you were from Cuba in another life, where guys would say, “ I Heat it pretty goood.”

  4. Jason T.

Lodolo with a very solid outing. That’s great to see, especially at GABP. What was the deal with his finger? Blister?
Offense did enough with some timely hitting. Great way to split a series after playing so poorly in the first 2 games.
What was with all the bullpen walks? Didn’t like to see that.

    • CenTexRed

I was wondering about that mound visit right before his last batter in the 6th.

Would be a bummer if that chronic problem returned.

      • Jason T.

Agreed. Need Lodolo to be healthy, especially with Greene missing a lot of time.
This early start time caught me off guard and I had to see a patient. I only managed to catch a few minutes here and there and didn’t see exactly what the issue was. Not seeing much reported on it. Hopefully it’s a non issue.

    • earmbrister

In the postgame TF said it was a problem with his fingernail, not a blister. The ASG break should allow for some healing.

Really nice game from Lodolo, and the offense had a good night as well. This is a much better team with Hays in the lineup, even better if Marte can continue to hit.

      • Jason T.

Thanks for the clarification. True. Some additional time off should absolutely help.
Lodolo seemed like he was really pitching well. I know his home stats haven’t been great compared to his road starts so that’s even better.

      • earmbrister

        YW JT.

If Lodolo can continue to progress and stay healthy it will be a boon to the team. He’s just 15 IP from his career season high of 115 IP.

      • doofus

Nothing like a nice manicure over All-Star break.

      • MK

Many times the blister will develop under the mail so long term it might not be a good thing.

    • Jmb

If it’s a blister, he’s got to stop throwing the curve which causes it.

      • jon

Yea the other team could just measure up his fast ball?

  5. Indy Red Man

I could only follow on my phone, but glad they took care of business. Hays looks like he’ll have the best ops of his career. Hopefully he can go the rest of the way.

Hate to see CES rot away on the bench though. That kind of raw power where he can lunge at a pitch or golf a low one right out of the yard is hard to find. Its not like we’re getting so much out of Lux, Benson, and Fraley. Tito could manuever him into the lineup if he wanted to. Thats the only way he can revive his career is to play. Gomber on Sunday is a lefty so maybe then?

The rotation could drive a possible run if HG comes back pretty soon. Moving Martinez back to long man strengthens the team. Maybe he could eat enough innings in the pen to keep Tony from having to pitch 24 days a month lol

    • Oldtimer

$21M long man on a small market team would be highly unusual but so be it.

      • CenTexRed

Value can be had in surprising, unconventional ways.

They’re paying the ghost of a 3rd baseman $15M not to play for the team.

      • Oldtimer

Reds are getting one of best SS in MLB for under $1 M (I think). It balances out. Market value for ELDC would be considerably higher.

Likewise Abbott is a bargain (great value) for what the Reds are paying him.

      • Jmb

Yes, but if gets out of gas, he’s out of gas.

      • Rob

I can’t see Martinez in the pen in the foreseeable future. For whatever reason, we have 3 starting pitchers who are going to hit their career innings limit. Lodolo, Burns, and possibly Abbott. Krall has this same data and has had since January. I don’t know the plan but convention says maybe an extra 15% beyond their career high before arm fatigue sets in. That is about 2-3 extra starts for Lodolo and Abbott, and 1-2 extra for Burns. That sounds like the second week of August. Why in the flip would you construct your roster this way? And push them beyond this artificial number? No way. That is partially the reason why we are walking the tightrope here. Did you see the hook on Burns the other night at 80 pitches? No, I can not imagine the September starting rotation without Singer, Martinez, and Greene. Almost as if we need an innings eater like Miley or Montas for sanity sake.

    • JB WV

CES needs to earn his playing time. He’s a butcher at third and is still lunging for pitches. Marte, if he can keep his head straight, could be the answer at third but I’m relieved when Espinal comes in late for defense. Still has some maturing to do.

      • CenTexRed

CES has made one error at 3B this season.

4 errors total in ~900 innings played in his brief career.

How do you “earn” playing time sitting on the bench?

        The occasional grand slam?

      • JB

CES is a butcher at 3rd but Marte isn’t? I’m here for the laughs

      • JB WV

Are you watching the same guy I am at third? The lumbering hack that has trouble getting the ball out of his glove when he does catch it? He’s a DH or occasional first baseman at best right now. And he’s sitting on the bench because better players are playing. Francona is trying to get these guys to the playoffs. They’re in a position to do so. It would be great if CES took advantage right now but brief flashes of power, like Hinds and AA and then the 0-20 something’s don’t help. And if he’d played 100 games at third he’d have a lot more errors than four.

      • JB WV

        @JB, I didn’t say Marte wasn’t. That’s why Espinal comes in late.
Look, third is a hole right now. Espinal is a weak hitter but an excellent glove. Marte can hit on a team that needs offense. I like the way Tito is using them right now. Is there an outside answer before the trade deadline if the Reds are serious? Maybe, but more likely a deal for a bullpen arm or right-handed outfielder. Love to see Marte clean up his fielding and be the guy. Just can’t see it being CES.

      • Jmb

Stewart is the answer to third. CES and Marte are just filling in until the youngster arrives.

    • Jason T.

@Indy, I too hate to see CES rot away on the bench. There’s zero chance on working on opportunities with his swing and pitch selection if he’s not given the chance to play.

      • Dan

Ortiz?? You mean the guy who’s currently suspended for a gambling inquiry?

      • JayTheRed

Reds can’t afford to have a guy consistently striking out and batting around .220 or less most of the season. You do actually want the Reds to win games, correct? Tito is doing the best he can with the team he has been given.

I would love to see the Reds add 20 or 30 million to payroll, but I just don’t think the Reds ownership would do that ever with the current ownership group.

    • JB

Exactly. Martinez improves the bullpen. Doesn’t matter at this point in the season how much a person makes old-timer. It’s about what makes the team better.

  6. RedsGettingBetter

Splitting this series wasn’t the first plan but due to Miami was red-hot recently, especially on the road and the team started losing the first 2 games being routed so I can’t say this is an awful result , although it’s kind of sweet and sauer…Abbott & Lodolo carried the Reds holding the Marlins hitters on…
Let’s go to find the way to sweep the Rockies to close the first half on a high note… Hope Burns have a nice outing tomorrow…

    • Dennis Westrick

Hope Burns not only has a nice outing but gets his first ML win!

    • JayTheRed

If Burns struggles against the Rockies, he is not ready to be in the Big Leagues. He needs more work at AAA. I know he did well in AA but feel like there is some seasoning to be done yet with this young man.

      • Leonard Smalls

        Burns in AAA:
        2 starts, 12.1 IP, 14 K, 4 BB, 0 HR

Are the Rockies really any better than the 49-37 Scranton RailRiders?

        Let’s GO REDS!

  7. ksdavis

Off game topic – but Jeff Passan for ESPN had the perfect player for teams to pick up. Suggested Steven Kwan to the Reds. What would everyone think of that pickup?

Not great power, but looks to be a decent doubles guy. Does not strike out a lot. Left field mainly but has played right and center.

Don’t know much about defense – in 4 years has committed a total of 14 errors.

What say you – a decent pick up – and if so what would it take to pry him from Cleveland? I am thinking maybe Petty, Arroyo, and an outfielder (not sure who).

    • Jason Franklin

Having Kwan batting second or third would be a big time upgrade and help solidify the outfield (and allow for the least qualified outfielder to be sent out). I really think it would cost more then Petty as the main piece though.

      • Jmb

They might. Cleveland’s offense is a complete joke. The number of guys hitting under .200 is incredible, and they have no power at all. We might see Kwan, Bibee, AND Ramirez get traded…for the right returns, of course.

      • TennTom

Maybe if we include CES, arroyo and a PTBNL. I like CES, but have my doubts whether he can become a starter with Reds. Marte, Stewart and Collier all 3B. Steer is really good at 1B.

      • Jonathan Linn

Kawan for CES and Phillips, and Hendricks

      • Old Big Ed

JMB, Ramirez has no-trade rights. He’s got 10 years with the Guardias, and his contract also likely has a no-trade clause, given his stated desire to stay in Cleveland. (Ramirez is a sure-fire The Guardians have 3 years of control left over Kwan, and 2 years of control over Clase.

The Guardians are 5 games out of the wild card, but don’t have the vibe of a team that is going to make a move. They will likely sell, but Clase isn’t having one of his better years, so there is no reason to sell him low. There might be a bullpen arm available, but nothing that would cost the Reds a top prospect.

    • doofus

How about Burns, Collier and Dudo for Corbin Carroll?

      • Old Big Ed

Carroll is under AZ control through 2030, with an option year for 2031, for very reasonable terms, given his production. Arizona has no reason to want to trade their most popular player, especially when he has good contract terms.

And that isn’t the kind of deal that either Mike Hazen or Nick Krall tends to make.

      • doofus

        L’audace, encore L’audace, et toujours L’audace!!!!

      • Old Big Ed

Takes two to tango daringly. Hazen likes Carroll and has him under a good contract.

The D-Backs are trying to get $250 million from the state toward a $500 million stadium upgrade. Trading away their 24-year-old star isn’t the way to curry political favor.

  8. Jason Franklin

Just a fun hypothetical trade scenario: supposedly Duran of the Red Sox is possibly on the trade block. Would you do a one-for-one of Chase Burns for Duran? Duran is not a free agent until 2029.

    • Jason Franklin

Simply put it would be fun to have Duran and EDLC in the same lineup. It would be chaos.

    • Jmb

Duran for Bibee. The Sox want an established front of the rotation guy.

      • JayTheRed

Duran for Lobolo plus a little extra from the minors?

I have doubted the Reds would even do this though.

    • Nick in NKY

No. Burns is on my “untouchable future cornerstone piece of the team” list.

    • Old Big Ed

I’d rather have 6 years of 22-year-old Burns than 3 arbitration eligible years of the soon-to-be age 29 Duran. He was excellent last year but has taken a step back this year. He does shows up to play every day.

Duran has some severe platoon splits: his OPS against RH pitching is .849 OPS, and .568 v. LH pitching.

  9. CincyDo

We are training idle SF by 3 games. SF plays LA while we fight Rockies. Advantage Reds. SD plays Phillies and Cardinals play Atlanta. Sweep Rockies we must, and see where the chips fall. 5 over and let’s say 1.5 games back for last WC spot, FO will at least pretend to talk some trades.

  10. RedlegScott

Impressed by Lodolo. Going to need him and more if we’re to make a run. Rollercoaster Reds.

    • Indy Red Man

Trying to get them out quickly through contact is hard for alot of guys. It burns up your pitch count even if you do K quite a few. Maybe watching AA has helped, but Lodolo threw very well vs Philly. AA, HG, Lodolo, Burns, and Lowder could get us a few division titles at the minimum

  11. Indy Red Man

Taylor Ward with the Angels. 20 hrs, .815 ops vs lefties. His ops vs lefties in 2024 was .873 and .896 the year before that. 20 HR power in their park probably equals 24-25 in Gabp. He has only 6 of those at home. He’s also hitting .324 in July. $7.8 mil doesn’t break the bank and upgrades 10X over Benson, etc

    • Jmb

I couldn’t agree more. I heard that just Arroyo would bring Ward, who is controllable through ’26, but it seems it would take a little more since Arroyo is no longer a top 100 prospect and is still at AA.

      • DaveCT

“Still at AA” is actually just his first half season and only 285 at bats there at age 21, almost 3 full years under league average.

  12. Nick in NKY

Any reason given for the Sam Moll appearance? I couldn’t figure that one out.

It would be a real boon for the team if Marte can keep his bat working and consistently barrel up balls like he has been.

    • TennTom

True that on Marte. He needs to work on defense too.

      • Old Big Ed

They bring in Espinal in the 7th inning or so for defense for Marte.

It reminds us old-timers of the Reds’ trying Dan Driessen at 3B in 1974. Driessen was at horror show at third. He started 126 games there, but only finished 36 of them. He still managed to make 24 errors and field .915; advanced metrics would have melted down the computers. They would bring in a defensive replacement – usually Darrel Chaney – as early as the 6th innings.

Marte is bigger, stronger and faster than Driessen (who had 31 SBs one season), and should put up bigger offensive numbers. Neither one belongs at 3B.

      • Oldtimer

I thought of Driessen, too. He was actually pretty good at 1B though.

    • wkuchad

I had the same question on bringing in Moll for Barlow. I wasn’t watching the game at that point, just following on my phone. I thought Barlow must have gotten hurt.

Bell caught a lot of flak about burning out our bullpen. I feel like Francona is even more aggressive about cycling through our bullpen. But it’s only a bad thing if they run out of gas before end of season.

      • Jim Walker

There was probably a specific reason they wanted Moll to make the appearance. Or, it could have been that Barlow was on a pitch count. He had pitched on the 4th, 6th, and 8th of July ahead of Thursday (10th). I more suspect it related to Moll though.

      • Old Big Ed

I think that he just wanted several guys to get some pitching in, with the 4-day break coming up.

The Rockies don’t have much by way of LH hitters, with Mickey Moniak and Ryan McMahon as the main ones. McMahon leads the league in strikeouts while posting an OPS+ of 82, and Moniak has a road OPS that is .277 lower than his home OPS.

I think Tito must have figured that he would at most need Moll (who had last pitched on July 6) for one game against the Rockies, and didn’t want to risk Moll’s being idle for 12 straight days.

    • AllTheHype

I think bringing in Moll was two fold.

      1. Keep Barlow’s pitch count down so both he and Moll are available today.
      2. Allow Moll to pitch to a live RHB, which I don’t think he has done much of since he’s been back.

    • JayTheRed

Probably trying to keep the magic Moll has had since coming up going. If he doesn’t pitch enough, he might go back to his early 2025 ways. I too thought it was a little odd but whatever.

  13. TR

As the mid-summer ASG approaches, I hope the Front Office is preparing a trade for a veteran hitter to lead the Reds to the playoffs. That hitter could occupy the DH position, which in my mind, has been underutilized by the Reds since the NL finally accepted it. Also, the occupant of the ‘hot corner’ has to be resolved and stabilized between Marte and CES, or through a trade. No question, third base is a key position for a winning team.

    • wkuchad

I don’t want a DH. If we trade for a big bat, I want a true 1B, 2B, or outfielder.

If we don’t trade for a big bat, at least get an OF that can only crush lefty pitching to platoon with Benson or Fraley.

      • VaRedsFan

Steer has been a beast at 1B defensively, and his bat has come around over the last 6-7 weeks.

Which 1st baseman would you want?
        Are they available?
        What is the cost?

      • VaRedsFan

Taylor Ward (mentioned above) hits leftys well.

      • wkuchad

        correction: 3B, not 2B

I like Steer, but if we brought in a true 1B, Steer could get plenty of playing time in LF and spot start at 2B, 3B, and DH as needed.

Yes, I would very much like to add Taylor Ward to the Reds. This would help a lot when we face a lefty starter.

      • Old Big Ed

Why is Steer not a “real” first baseman?

Baseball Savant has him 5th among all MLB first basemen in outs above average (4), with Freddie Freeman leading a group tied for 6th with only 1 OAA. And since May 11, Steer has slashed .301 /.338/.503, plus he is an excellent baserunner.

The Reds have a good first baseman. As the (now) late Lee Elia once said, “the name of the game is to hit the ball, catch the ball, and get the __ job done.” Steer checks all those boxes.

I can’t see who at the deadline will be any better than what they have now.

      • wkuchad

Old Big Red, we need a bat. I think we both agree on that.

We don’t need a catcher, 2B, or SS. That leaves 1B, 3B, and OF. Of those three positions, get the best bat you can.

Agree, Steer is adequate to good for 1B. But he can also play LF and 3B if needed, depending on which position we can get the best deal for the best bat.

  14. redwolf

my trade proposal, Marte, Petty. Arroyo for Jose Ramirez. Big price for big production

    • Jonathan Linn

you would have to throw in Chase Burns or Rhett Lowder to get Jose Ramirez

      • Redsvol

Agree with JL. It would take more for Ramirez. And he is one of 3 players in all of mlb that it would be worth it.

    • CI3J

Ramirez is going to turn 33 next month.

Absolutely would not do that trade.

If you want to target a player from Cleveland, Kwan is the one to go for. He’d be much cheaper and would solve an issue the Reds have in the outfield. He’d be an ideal #2 hitter, someone who can get on base and force the opposing pitcher to throw a lot of pitches.

If Tito could open up the run game, Friedl could really swipe some bags during Kwan’s ABs. Kwan is also similar to Friedl in that he hits both RHP and LHP about equally well, so no need to platoon.

That leaves Benson play all over the outfield to give the 3 main starters rest, or else to step in if (when?) Hays is out injured. It also frees up Lux to be a SuperSub and play wherever he is needed on any given day.

On most days, the BA would be:

      CF Friedl
      RF Kwan
      SS EDLC
      LF Hays
      1B Steer
      DH Lux
      C Stephenson/Trevino
      3B Marte
      2B McLain

      With
      OF Benson
      C Stephenson/Trevino

Does Friedl have the legs left to run a lot and play CF every day? He already seems to be going through some changes out there on defense.

Melvin>> Tough day for Hinds on Thurs. 2 K’s, a BB and nothing more. At least the BB was a strong PA against a 33 year vet, Vince Velaquez, with 5+ bWAR at MLB. Hinds was down 1-2 and battled back for the BB in a 9 pitch PA by fouling off 3 straight pitches that would have been called strike 3.

And baseball is so much a game of less than inches and fractions of seconds when the ball meets the bat. Hinds had a high deep drive which would have been a Grand Slam that was caught less than 5′ from the wall. It must have been a top spin loft that died just enough to be caught as the fielder was at the wall looking up, then turned back toward the plate and made the catch. The EV on this was “only” 94.6mph.

Later on, he was out by half a step on a 104.8mph ground ball the 2b made a diving stop on to the SS side and behind 2b and came up firing to get the out.

Baseball is a tough game. Careers, lives, and fortunes are shaped by such things.

A few more feet on that fly ball and we would have said a good day after that grand salami. 🙂

Baseball Trade Values has Ramirez at 57.3 and Marte, Petty & Arroyo at a combined 41.3.

Ramirez is 32 with about 78MM left on his contract.

    • Old Big Ed

Ramirez can veto any trade, and he’s made it clear that he likes Cleveland.

He is a Hall of Famer in my book. If being a “valuable” includes an analysis of what a team would be without him, Ramirez would have about 5 MVPs right now.

      • Melvin

Maybe he’d come back to play for Tito. 🙂

  15. Redsvol

Good, solid start from Lodolo. Nice to see him get thru 6 innings. Hope he doesn’t need an IL stint. No depth right now.

Need chase burns to go out and get his first mlb win.

  16. doofus

Burns, Collier and Dudo for Corbin Carroll.

    • Old Big Ed

Arizona doesn’t want to trade Carroll, and if they did, they would prefer Duno over Dudo.

      • doofus

Thank you for correcting my misspelling.

  17. CLTRedsFan

Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan are the Guardians two best players and their fans favorites. If they want to totally destroy their fan base they’ll trade them!! I can see the Guardians trading Clase to the Red Sox for one of their talented surplus outfielders. In an earlier post I was being facetious about bringing back Stuart Fairchild!! My reference to Clearance Rack Krall and my wife’s affection for Stuart should have given it away!! Glad you got a laugh out of it JB!!

    • Jim Walker

Amazingly, Stu is still on Atlanta’s 26 man roster with all the comings and goings they have had. If Atlanta sees itself as clearly out of the playoff chase, I’d think they would have a better use for his spot. But, don’t be surprised if he ends up on a postseason team in the same limited role.

      • wkuchad

He was terrible early in the season, but shown improvement lately and getting his overall numbers to… not respectable, but much less embarrassing.

      • Jim Walker

Yeah, I saw his triple slash for the last two weeks is .313/.353/.500 (.853 OPS). He has had just short of a third of all his 2025 PAs (17/55) in that time frame. The slugging is 3 doubles vs a HR. Regular playing makes so much difference.

Also, don’t overlook that Stu missed the end of 2024 with a hand injury and subsequent surgery. The Reds food chain didn’t work to let him play his way into shape on the 26 man roster like a couple of guys are doing. Incredible Atlanta would be the place that has kept him.

      • Indy Red Man

Our boy Stewie! He’s better then Connor Joe and had a .786 ops vs lhp last year. Solid defensively and a little power/speed. Why not?

Anyone care to predict who the Reds will take in the draft? I’m trying not to guess, because when I do, I am always disappointed. lol

    • JayTheRed

It will be a pitcher or shortstop. Don’t know which one. I think I would fall down if they took an Outfielder.

      • Old Big Ed

        Good guess.

They did pick SS Eric Davis in the 1980 draft, SS Billy Hamilton in the 2009 draft, and SS Rece Hinds in the 2019 draft. And we can’t really complain about 2nd round picks Sammy Stafura in 2023 or Tyson Lewis in 2024.

I want them to avoid picking any LSU pitchers, who have been cash cows for orthopedic clinics over the last couple of Reds drafts.

  19. Hanginwithem

Nick Krall has been with the Reds organization in some capacity for over 20 years. He has ascended as high as he can go. He would jump at the offer of a lateral move to a team that would let him work with a competitive payroll. Then, the Reds would start over with Meador, or someone else looking to cut their teeth as a GM, and Krall would be hanging pennants for the Angels or the Las Vegas A’s or the BoSox or any other underperforming team. He’s pretty much done all he can do here. I mean, who wants to come to Cincinnati and play for this current ownership?

    • I'm 3rd

Marte should be playing everyday at 3rd, and Steer, CES most everyday at 1B/DH. Let them play, for once. They have no problem with McLain

    • wkuchad

Until we show some consistent winning, other teams with a competitive payroll are not going to offer Krall a job.

      • Leonard Smalls

I’m not gonna argue that Krall might be a “hot name” in MLB but the trade for Singer and the trade for Trevino are the kind of moves that fans tend to forget about but are probably pretty well regarded around front offices in the industry.

  20. JayTheRed

Just going to say if the Reds get anything good besides a relief pitcher at the Deadline, I will truly be shocked.

    • Old Big Ed

I generally agree, but I could see where they would make an offer for Eugenio Suarez, if the Diamondbacks don’t put together a winning streak over the next 3 weeks. He’s a free agent after the season and won’t cost a lot.

He can’t play 3B any better than Marte, but they could DH one of them.

I think Eugenio would love it.

      • chris

i would go after Suarez’s bat and put him in the lineup behind Elly and figure out what to do on the field later. we need bats! and some new blood in the bullpen. a couple of relief pitchers.

      • Indy Red Man

        Cmon? He’s 100x better then Marte at 3B. Gino’s wasn’t that bad at 3B

      • doofus

Yankees need a third baseman more than the Reds.

  21. Stan

We also need a starting pitcher because all of our starters except for Singer are going to surpass their career innings pitched this year.Zack Little of TB would be a nice pickup .
