The Cincinnati Reds are planning on sending their ace, Hunter Greene, to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment. Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News was the first to report on this.
Hunter Greene is currently on the injured list with a right groin strain for the second time this year. The right-handed pitcher didn’t miss much time the first go-around, but he quickly aggravated the injured and had to go back on the 15-day injured list after just three starts following his return.
Greene has now missed the last month. Much of that time has been spent in Goodyear the Reds spring training facility where they have a rehab team year round. This past week the right-handed starter joined Cincinnati in Boston and he threw a live batting practice session, throwing 20 pitches and facing five hitters.
He recovered well and now he will head down to the minor leagues to prepare for his return to the big leagues. The Bats aren’t in Louisville next week, but they are still quite close as they are facing the Columbus Clippers. If you are in the area it might be a nice way to go watch Greene pitch a little more up close and personal and for a lot lower of a price than sitting in the nice seats at Great American Ball Park. They’ll play at 7:05pm ET on Tuesday.
The Reds could certainly use Greene to return to the mound and continue what he has been doing this season (and last) when he’s been healthy. In his 11 starts in 2025 he’s posted a 2.72 ERA with 14 walks and 73 strikeouts in 59.2 innings pitched.
There’s no mention at this point as to how long Greene will be with Louisville rehabbing. But if he will pitch on Tuesday then he could return to the mound on Sunday for the Bats, then – in theory at least, pitch on Friday with the Reds to open up the second half of the season when the club returns from the All-Star break. Perhaps that is too aggressive and he gets another start in the minor leagues after the break is over before his return – but as long as he continues to get through his outings healthy, he’ll likely be wearing a Cincinnati uniform rather quickly.

Sounds like positive news. Greene is excellent when healthy.
Excellent. Let’s hope he doesn’t suffer another relapse
Please don’t rush this.
I think the Greene’s return depends on how Chase Burns will perform in his outings…If Burns can rebound and pitch well that would give more time to Greene’s rehab
Good news! But, yes, only as long as they are not rushing him back.
