The Cincinnati Reds are in Boston today as they open up a series against the Red Sox. Prior to the start of the series they made a set of roster moves on Monday afternoon. Left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa has been called up from Triple-A Louisville and he is taking the place on active roster of right-handed reliever Ian Gibaut, who has right shoulder impingement.

Gibaut last pitched on Saturday in the loss to the San Diego Padres. He threw a perfect 9th inning, needing just 11 pitches to record three outs. Now he will be out at least 15 days while on the injured list.

Cincinnati is bringing in lefty Joe La Sorsa to take his spot. He’s pitched in two games for the Reds this season and spent the rest of his season in Triple-A with the Bats. In his first game with the Reds he tossed a hitless inning with two walks against Arizona. Four days later he made his second appearance and things didn’t go nearly as well as he allowed four runs on five hits in an inning to Cleveland.

He headed back to Triple-A after that and has now pitched in four games for Louisville and allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings on three hits, three walks, and he’s had seven strikeouts.

La Sorsa has pitched solid at Triple-A but I am still hesitant he could be good at major level…Hope he proves he can…

Interesting choice … Sanmartin has been the Bat’s most effective LH reliever. While he is not on the 40-man roster, the Reds have an open slot. Luis Mey could have also been summoned … curious.

My thoughts too. Righty goes IL, righty replaces seems logical. I didn’t register SanMartin isn’t on the 40 man roster.

Hopefully he’s only used in mopup situations.

His AAA numbers are scary when you extrapolate them to MLB.

It could be that LaSorsa was chosen “because” he is left handed. The Red Sox, if I recall, are very left handed, so having another lefty in the pen may be a calculated addition at this time.

Our bullpen depth is getting downright scary.

Hurry back Graham, and Rhett/Hunter (moving Martinez to BP)!
