Chase Burns struck out eight batters in his debut and dazzled at times, but the Cincinnati Reds had to come from behind twice against New York on Tuesday night. They would get the job done, scoring twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Yankees and guarantee themselves a series win with a chance to go for a sweep on Wednesday.

You never really know how a guy is going to react the first time they get on the mound in the big leagues. Chase Burns acted appropriately and announced his presence with authority. He needed four pitches to strike out Trent Grisham to begin the game. He battled with Ben Rice but came away with another strikeout after six pitches. Then he would strike out Aaron Judge to complete his first inning.
In the second inning Chase Burns picked up where he left off, but it wasn’t quite as easy this time. He battled Cody Bellinger for eight pitches before striking him out. Paul Goldschmidt then struck out on seven pitches. Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke up the no-hitter with a single into right field, but the Reds rookie right-hander rebounded with another strikeout to end the inning to give him six on the day.
Chase Burns didn’t strike out either of the first two batters of the 3rd inning, but both Austin Wells and Oswald Peraza grounded out. Trent Grisham, however, did strike out – for the second time today – to end the inning and give Burns seven of them on the day.
Ben Rice started the 4th inning by breaking up the shutout as he clobbered a slider 427 feet way up into the seats in right field to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Aaron Judge followed up with a single. After two lazy fly balls for outs, Jazz Chisholm Jr. picked up his second single of the day. Anthony Volpe then hit a liner to center and TJ Friedl made a do-or-die diving attempt on a ball in front of him and he missed it and it rolled by him and all the way to the wall for a 2-run triple that extended the New York lead to 3-0.
Burns returned to the mound for the 5th inning and gave up a leadoff single to Oswald Peraza on a line drive off of the glove of a leaping and outstretched Elly De La Cruz. Peraza stole second, but he would be stranded there as Burns picked up his 8th strikeout of the game before getting Ben Rice and Aaron Judge out to end the inning and ultimately his day.
The Reds weren’t getting much done against Carlos Rodon, but he was finished after the 6th inning. The Yankees turned the game over to the bullpen there and brought in Jonathan Loaisiga to face the middle of the Cincinnati lineup. Tyler Stephenson picked up a 1-out walk and then Rece Hinds hit a 111 MPH grounder off of the glove of a diving Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s glove for a single to put two men on for Jose Trevino. The first pitch he saw he picked up a second infield hit of the inning on a diving play by Anthony Volpe at shortstop and that left the bases full of Reds.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who hasn’t played in several days, was due up and facing a right-handed reliever. Manager Terry Francona opted to not pinch hit for him and it paid off as Encarnacion-Strand doubled into the left field corner and cleared the bases to tie the game up. Former Reds reliever Fernando Cruz then entered the game and was able to strand the runner to keep the game tied up and send it to the 8th inning.
Brent Suter, who had struck out the side in the top of the 7th, returned to the mound in the 8th and recorded the first two outs against the top of the Yankees order. But when Aaron Judge came to the plate it was time for a pitching change and Lyon Richardson entered out of the bullpen and he got a ground out to shortstop to end the top half of the frame and keep the game tied up.
In the bottom of the 8th inning the Reds caught a bad break. On a 3-1 count Elly De La Cruz took the 5th pitch of the at-bat and the umpire called it a strike. It looked low and the pitch tracking sure seemed to show it as being low. He would then strike out on the next pitch. Spencer Steer followed up with a single and one that had De La Cruz been on first base, would have moved him to third. Tyler Stephenson ended the inning on a fly out to right field that was plenty deep enough to have been a sacrifice fly. But baseball still refuses to go with an automated strikezone and instead allow human mistakes by those not involved in playing the game to dictate the outcomes and because of that the game remained tied and went to the 9th inning.
Lyon Richardson returned to the mound for the 9th inning and gave up a leadoff single. He rebounded quickly, getting a fly out and then back-to-back strikeouts to send the game to the bottom of the 9th.
Cincinnati saw a familiar face enter the game as the Yankees called Devin Williams to the mound. He sat the Reds down in order and the streak continued for Williams, who has not given up a hit to the club since September of 2022 and thrown 14.0 innings during that stretch.
Tony Santillan took over for Cincinnati in the top of the 10th inning. He would get a pop up and the a line out against the first two hitters, but then he walked Trent Grisham on five pitches. Another walk followed to load the bases. That resulted in a visit from pitching coach Derek Johnson before Santillan had to face Aaron Judge. The talk worked as Judge popped up next to the mound and stranded all three runners.
The Reds half of the 10th inning began with the team sending Will Benson to pinch run for Christian Encarnacion-Strand as the free runner. Then Santiago Espinal was allowed to hit for himself against a right-handed pitcher despite being one of the worst hitters in baseball against right-handed pitching. He failed to get a bunt down and then popped up to first base. TJ Friedl followed with a pop up to shortstop. Matt McLain then ended the inning with a ground out to first base.
Connor Phillips took over for Cincinnati in the 11th inning and got a ground out on a nice play by Spencer Steer at first base, but Aaron Judge advanced to third on the play. Phillips then threw a wild pitch that brought Judge in to score and give the Yankees the lead.
Matt McLain began the bottom of the 11th as the Reds free runner with the middle of the lineup due up. Elly De La Cruz began the inning with an infield single where he just beat pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. to the bag. Spencer Steer then took the first pitch he saw and lined a single into center to tie the game up as McLain scored from third. On the play De La Cruz seemed to not realize his team was down a run and he casually jogged to second base on the play as he seemingly thought the game was over. During the next at-bat a wild pitch to Tyler Stephenson moved both runners up. Stephenson would eventually draw a walk to load the bases.
With Rece Hinds due up, the Reds opted to pinch hit for him and send lefty Gavin Lux to the plate to face a laboring right-handed Leiter Jr. The Yankees brought Cody Bellinger in from the outfield to load up the infield and play with just two outfielders, hoping to prevent a ground ball from reaching the outfield. The move didn’t seem to matter as Lux lined a single into center for a walk-off hit.
Key Moment of the Game
Gavin Lux walking it off in the 11th inning.
Notes Worth Noting
Chase Burns allowed three runs in 5.0 innings with no walks and he struck out eight batters. He topped out at 100.1 MPH on the day and he threw 81 pitches with 53 strikes.
Entering the day the two teams were a combined 2-11 in extra inning games this season and had each scored just one run in those 13 games.
Spencer Steer had three hits on the day. Both Elly De La Cruz and Christian Encarnacion-Strand had 2-hit nights. Tyler Stephenson had all three of the Reds walks on the day.
Austin Hays has gone 1-4 with a walk and a run scored in his first rehab game with Double-A Chattanooga. He served as the designated hitter. His run scored came on a single and he scored from second base on the play.
Up Next for the Cincinnati Reds
New York Yankees vs Cincinnati Reds
Wednesday June 25th, 7:10pm ET
Max Fried (9-2, 2.05 ERA) vs Brady Singer (7-5, 4.13 ERA)

Now that was a great win!!!
Agree! Let’s get one more tomorrow!
Great news and Good news! The Great news is that the Reds beat the hated (by me) Yankees and win the series! Been a Yankee hater since the 1961 World Series!
The Good news is that Burns survived his first ML start and did not get charged with what looked like a loss early on!
Great job by the Reds bullpen tonight! The covered 5 innings with five different pitchers yielding only ONE hit and ONE run (Phillips).
Why stop now? Let’s get the brooms out tomorrow and sweep the Yankees out of town!
Make that SIX innings covered by the Reds bullpen! Math can be challenging after 10:30 pm!
I was a fan in ’61 as well. I’ve never hated the Yankee team but just like the Cubs, I hate their fans, two of the most disrespectful groups of people going.
Red Sox and Phillies fans are also obnoxious.
New York’s A.L. team was originally the Highlanders who came from Baltimore in 1903. They became the New York Yankees in 1913. They have a fascinating and incredible history of great players. I especially like to recall the Red’s 1976 W.S. sweep. Burns debut and the Red’s walk-off win is a positive.
Great Reds win. So fun to watch. 5-0 vs Yanks. 1 more then we can get some more on the WS.
The Tankees.
Man, great win and obviously a big time performance from Burns. Look forward to watching him every 5 days!
I’m also hoping that this game gives Phillips some confidence. It would be huge for the Reds if he could develop like Richardson has. Elite arm, and the Reds need that in the bullpen.
Chase Ryan.
Good point on Phillips Tampa! Phillips looked ready for the moment and mildly annoyed that TS tried to backhand that ball. Very positive sign for a guy that’s been through a lot in the past year.
No doubt about it. TS trying to backhand a ball like that with a runner on 3rd was just terrible. Runner on 3rd means block the ball no matter what you have to do.
I realize it was an 11-inning game, but Yankee hitters had 13 SOs for the second straight game against Reds pitching! Noteworthy!
Burns K’d 6 in the first 2 innings.
What a game!
Burns is everything as advertised. Faced giving up some runs, settled back down and was just great.
CES and Steer with some great hits. That CES hit to tie the game was a beautiful thing to watch. Lux with the walk off winner was just electrifying.
Bullpen did its job well. Suter and Richardson lights out. Santillan flirted with disaster but got the job done. Wow! Just an excellent team effort all around.
Crowd was great. My wife and I happened to be surrounded by Yankee fans on the 3rd base side. And man can they trash talk. Was priceless to see their faces after the Lux hit. Now 5-0 attending Reds game and we’ll be back again tomorrow.
Go Reds! Let’s keep it going.
We need to start a GoFundMe account for you to attend all of the remaining Reds home games this season!
Grew up in Cincy, my wife in Dayton, and we’ve always been huge Reds fans. Actually live in Montreal now but we try to get to as many games as we can.
Great to see a packed stadium on a Tuesday night. And a hot night it was.
What a win!
We’ll keep sending you to games with results like here and Detroit.
You witnessed a great one tonight.
Congrats!
Trash-talkers from NY? No way.
We were in 109, row LL. Yankees fans weren’t too terrible and they seemed to get a kick out of all of the Yankees suck and f the Yankees chants that were going on.
Nice! We were in 117, row G. Glad to hear that. Great crowd and the Reds fans were loud indeed! Way different atmosphere at these type of games.
Had a blast messing with Yankees fans in the Bronx at Castillo’s final game as a Red back in July ’22. Which they miraculously won. Front row center right field right over the Reds bullpen. Went alone and miraculously ended up sitting next to the only other Reds fan there. What a hoot! But it’s clear they see us as a farm club and everyone in that stadium expected Castillo to be wearing a Yankees uniform the following week. (Just like–sorry–Elly will by the end of the 29 season).
Place was PACKED and I mean PACKED on a Wednesday night. A lot of good natured banter with the NY crowd. They respect crazy and two lonely Reds’ fans in the front row of the bleachers was pretty crazy. Born and raised in Cincy but my kids think I belong in NYC because of the way I drive. Yankee Stadium is a GREAT place to see a game and you should go sometime. I got lucky. I was in town to see the Dead lol.
It felt really satisfying to see the boys shut off the “Let’s Go Yankees” chants down by the river last night with what looked like a playoff win. So sorry to miss this one. It felt like ’23 only better after seeing Chase Burns pitch. They should lock him down and I mean NOW.
Definitely bullpen won this game. A lot of positives to take away for Burns. He certainly has the make up to be a star. Offense was a l? to get some hits. Defense made some plays particularly that play by Steer. But for me the key of the game is when Boone pulled Rondon after 6 innings at 88 pitches and cruising. Curious to see what he has to say because the media, NY media, wont let him get away with that decision.
Yeah Boone may get accused of still being faithful to Cincy after that one! Reds hitters had to be thrilled to see him not come back out for the 7th.
The Boones have a history with the Reds and are one of the town’s baseball families.
Yeah that was kind of the basis of the comment.
Watching Brett Boone and Brandon Phillips play together was a must watch. So much fun.
I don’t ever recall seeing those two play together…
@redfanorbust, I expect you mean Pokey Reese. Brandon never played alongside Brett Boone.
In his post game comments, Boone was questioned on his decision to pull Rondon and simply said: he was done. When he was pressed further, he just repeated “he was done”. He was also second guessed in the YES postgame studio show about only have Williams pitch one inning (9 pitches). Of course, in the extra innings, Leiter Jr would throw 28 pitches on top of the 20 something from the night before.
The Reds bullpen may have “won the game” but they had help from the offense who had to score 2 in the 11th to win the game in their own right. The bats are coming alive.
Time for you to get season tickets Jason!
Brady Singer against Max Fried tomorrow at 610 pm. You had Burns and Rodon pitching again in the article. Just a templet oversight and no big deal of course.
Francona said in the post game that he didn’t pinch hit for CES because the pitcher has reverse splits. So he was playing righty/lefty in that spot.
Mental mistake by EDLC on the Steer base hit. He should’ve been on 3rd if he ran hard off the crack of the bat. Stephenson seen talking to EDLC about it during the walk off celebration on the field. Francona will definitely have a talk with him too. Ultimately it didn’t affect the outcome of the game negatively, but could’ve been a huge mistake had things gone differently. Celebrate the Reds win of course, but can’t continue making those types of mental mistakes going forward
If Stephenson took care of it Francona doesn’t need to say a thing. When teammates take care of these things it is much more effective. It is a nice maturity thing to see if Stephenson did it. Leadership 101.
And a missed catch by EDLC. But he’s better than Volpe. What if the Reds had got their wish and landed Volpe and Dominguez for Castillo? That might have been better for both teams!
That’s why you check in and listen to your base coach
Some final comments before I turn in for the night! Reds have played 80 games with tomorrow marking the halfway point of the 2025 season! I believe Tito has slowly been figuring out what works with this Reds roster and working around some significant injuries, especially Greene!
Need to survive the next 10 games (through July 6th) and then light the fuse for a strong 2nd half.
Great job, Burns! I hope you learned something on that play, Friedl. Not really close. Outstanding managing by Tito, IMHO.
Except maybe Lux could’ve done that earlier and score CES so we win in 9. He’s strangely confident in Espy for some reason and its not paying off
Agree 100%. I don’t know what it is about Espinal that Tito is so enamored with.
I’m never going to fault TJ for making an attempt like that. It was close.
So many times I see OF’ers loaf for a ball, and then let it drop in front of him, when it looked like with any effort and a dive they could make a catch.
Giving max effort shouldn’t be chastised, IMO.
I was more disturbed by Tyler Stephenson trying to backhand a pitch in the dirt with a man on 3rd, instead of moving and trying to block it. That was a lack of effort error that almost cost them the game.
I hear you, VA, but on that play, he wasn’t really that close to making the catch, as I saw it. I’m not chastising him per se, I just hope he’s a little more mindful of what’s catchable v what isn’t.
I think Friedl was caught in no man’s land. I think he thought he had a chance and then realized he didn’t and was caught in a bad decision. It happens. Seen a lot of outfielders do it.
@JB Agree. It happens.
Stephenson, Candy, and Benson to Phils for Castellanos.
I won’t go after Friedl on that play. You need to have a certain level of aggressiveness in CF. That doesn’t change it was a mistake, and it nearly cost the Reds the game. On balance Friedl is a good CF.
I think that Friedl lost the ball in the lights, momentarily. It might have been a strange angle for him to move to the ball, and in the twilight, I think the ball was up in the lights and he lost it for a moment.
After that play, he was talking to Benson in LF, and pointing up into the lights.
My guess is that the ball had a lot more top-spin on it than Friedl could see, and it sunk faster than he anticipated.
Hinds made an excellent catch later in the game, and Steer made an excellent play at first.
Meanwhile, Jazz Chisholm is a bad defender at 3B, plus he got himself tossed for sassing the ump over the exact same call made on Elly in the prior half inning. The LH-hitting Chisholm’s replacement was RH-hitting LeMahieu, who made the last Yankee out against Phillips.
Barlow yesterday and Richardson today with some excellent work in mutliple innings. A very small thing in picking up what Ashcraft was moving to, but if either or both can continue to do so it will save the starters pitch counts/wear and tear with benefits later in the season.
Family in town so I missed most of it, but big win. Crowd was electric! Happy for CES and Hines had a hit and made a nice catch. Steer seems fully back on track too! I’m not assuming anything whatsoever, but maybe they can make a run 2nd half!
This is a very huge series win… Reds stay in the wildcard race at 2 games behind cutting the distance from the 1st place Cubs to 4.5 GB.
Chase Burs had a very solid debut in my opinion against one of the MLB best lineups, just blinked in the 4th inning surrendering the runs. It’s encouraging heading to the next games and he could be starting the series opener at Boston.
Doug has as the key moment of the game Lux walk-off hit, but I think another key moment was Judge being dominated with the bases loaded to end the Yankees 10th inning with no runs…
Just thinking on tomorrow since Max Fried will be starting for the Yankees and the Reds offense is gonna face another tough lefty…won´t be easy…
Reds need Singer could go deep in the game, the bullpen is gassed
Did anyone notice what pitch Lyon Richardson got Judge to ground out on?
I was traveling and bickering as usual with my my map app on my phone. Natural consequences, i agree, but i digress. Was it the change? Seems like it’d be The Weapon.
Judge has been on a cold streak since a bad series in Boston.
“But baseball still refuses to go with an automated strikezone and instead allow human mistakes by those not involved in playing the game to dictate the outcomes and because of that the game remained tied and went to the 9th inning.” I could not agree more. There is nothing good about having a balls and strikes umpire shown to be wrong time after time. Getting automated balls and strikes would also add more offense in the game, if I have read the research correctly.
Everyone agrees except the league’s front office it seems. The wheels of change grind slowly.
Umps are integral to the culture of the game for sure, but the strike zone is the most consequential cornerstone of the game. If we want the right call on a close play at first, we want the right call on strike three.
If the grandparents of the world can pick up a smartphone and adjust to modern life, surely baseball can suck it up and get with the times.
They certainly warmed to the gambling with ease…I can’t imagine the suits in that business never mentioned how erratic game calling might lead to less betting.
For better or for worse, players need to be rewarded for good pitching, and batters for good discipline.
….or you could hold the umps accountable and let go the ones who can’t make the correct calls. i don’t want to see the robo umps, call me old fashioned if you want, but i like that human element
Super entertaining game!
–loved seeing Burns so chill in the first inning and his usage of the changeup. He has IT.
–great work by the bullpen, esp. Richardson.
–seen enough of Espinal (-0.8 WAR). He failed the team in the 10th 3 times during his 3 pitch AB: not bunting at a strike the first pitch, pulling the bat back too late to hammer a center cut fastball on the second pitch, then not advancing the runner to third on the last pitch. Had he done his job TJ’s bunting would’ve ended the game.
Like I said during the game thread, Lux should have been pinch hitting there.
Espinal also had a horrendous PA in the Saturday debacle versus St Louis. In the 11th inning, the Reds free runner advanced to 3b on a wild pitch during the first PA of the inning, which ended in a K by Benson. Espinal then K’d for the 2nd out.
Agreed on Espinal. Getting way too much time to be a well below average ML hitter
Since 2020 the Yankees are the worst extra innings team on the road. They are the best extra innings team at home. Weird stat.
I was at the game again, 2nd of 2. Jason T. I wish I’d known you were there – we were just behind the Yankees dugout. Could have said hello. And yes, Yankees fans can be obnoxious. The kids that came down after the original ticket holders left their seats were annoying. Though if they’d been little Reds fans perhaps I’d have found them heartwarming!
My observations from tonight.
Exciting debut for Burns. He was electric at the start and looks like a future stud. Cool to see his very first start. After that the bullpen was very impressive. Suter doesn’t look intimidating but he gets outs. Hats off to the whole crew, including Santillan who responded to the pep talk to shut down the 10th.
Agree completely on the Elly strikeout. Terrible call that may have changed the course of the game. Glad the Reds still won.
Defense was terrific tonight. You didn’t do Steer’s play at 1st in extras justice, Doug. Bellinger was unlucky that it hit the bag – a sure double otherwise – but Steer handled the bad hop beautifully. Impressive major league play. And Hinds made a terrific catch on the next batter. You guys watching on TV probably had a better view of the Stephenson PB / WP but it looked like a very tough play, with Phillips at fault not Tyler. My only complaint was the Friedl dive. It didn’t look close from our angle and it was too early to be taking that risk. Probably cost the Reds a run.
Finally, Elly’s baserunning was the story at the end. He flat beat Leiter to the bag and transformed the inning. But his situational error could have been a disaster. Glad to hear that Stephenson had a word with him after, and I’m hoping Colin Cowgill and JR House stay on top of that sort of thing all season, for Elly and everyone. On a related note, whoever had the “More Cowgill” sign last week deserves free front row seats for an upcoming series IMHO.
Finally, I do love seeing the Reds at GABP and when they win? Magic. Back to Atlanta and Asheville but we’ll be back again next year of course. In the meantime, Go Reds!
MORE COWGILL!! LMAO!?
I was in 117, probably right by you too!
Those are great observations. If Steer keeps hitting, McLain having a solid June, to go with what Friedl and Elly can do it’s going to be fun to watch not only the wild card race but this divisional race. Throw in Lux with just professional at bats and a big if but a healthy Hays. Loved watching CES crank that double down the line. Hinds needs to get some consistent playing time.
NL is stacked. A lot of competition and it’s great how well overall the Reds have played over this key stretch of games. Just need to start winning series in our division. Some good fortunes with player health will go a long way too.
Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Cinci a combined 22/30 over the last 10 games (nearly 75% winning rate). At least the Cubs are stumbling.
Sweep ’em!
Boy, I’ll tell you what. I was really impressed by Chase Burns. He has a triple digit heater, but he doesn’t seem to think he has to rely on it. He was mixing up his pitches and throwing them all with confidence. He got strikeouts on three different pitch types (slider, fastball, changeup) and kept them off balance and guessing.
Compare to Hunter Greene when he first came up, who was basically a two-pitch pitcher and leaned heavily on his fastball. It took Greene time to learn how to pitch at the MLB level. Burns looks ready now.
We’ll see how he does as other teams get the scouting reports on him, but a very, very impressive start. Very polished.
I’m looking forward to adding Lowder back into the mix. (Greene, too.)
Burns major league debut was somewhat reminiscent of Mo Sanford’s debut back in 1991.
Sanford faced the Padres and promptly struck out the first 3 batters he faced:
Bib Roberts
Tony Fernandez
Tony Gwynn
(3 guys who weren’t exactly easy to strike out)
Hopefully Burns will have a much better pro career than Sanford
WOW!! Mo Sanford? Now THAT is a deep pull.
I remember watching that Reds / Padres game on television many years ago thinking ‘wow’, this Sanford guy might turn into something special.
As I recall, his 2nd outing wasn’t as spectacular as his first one.
What a fun game! Are we peaking or just getting started?
First Wife and I switched to one of our shows when we were in what looked like a deep hole (which we were). I checked my phone and Gameday just in time to see the bases loaded and then cleared (watched that clip this morning). Our show wrapped shortly after that and we tuned back in.
All that walk-it-off energy was amazing to watch. Love it when the NY*D*Y’s lay an egg like that.
Great debut from Burns. I know they will manage his innings closely, but the young man looked ready to me.
Back at it this evening and a chance to sweep the Evil Empire!!
@Mark>> Prime Days are coming up in less than 2 weeks. Get yourself a small or mid-sized tablet to follow along in such situations. Just mute the sound (and turn on the captioning if you want commentary). Works great here.
BTW, a tablet is also great for resolving on the fly where you previously saw actors you recognize from other shows/ movies, but can’t recall which other shows/ movies. Last night, the guy I knew wasn’t quite an aged Bryan Cranston turned out to be an aged Kevin Bacon. 😉
Tito can certainly manage well against AL teams. Now if he can just figure out the NL Central!
Tough matchup for today’s game. But a big step forward for the team if they can knock of the Yankees again. Not to mention a huge boost to the fans. Most of us would rather see the Reds sweep the Dodgers, but sweeping the Yankees is a close 2nd – kind of reminds me of 1976. Regarding EDLC, looking at his errors this year, two things jump out. First, while he’s made 12 errors so far this season, only 5 are fielding errors. The rest are throwing errors. Does he rush his throws, etc? Secondly, his error rate overall is down from last season. While his 5 fielding errors are tied for the ML lead, it’s only one error more than Lindor. It’s the throwing errors that are holding him back. Maybe he can get to Witt’s level (who has only 2 of each thus far), maybe not. But he’s clearly making progress, despite the frustration that many of us experience when he screws up a relatively “easy” play.
Larkin brought it up on the previous game his throwing errors often are a result of not getting his feet in the proper position and his arm slit drops causing the ball to sail out of his hand. All correctable through practice to muscle memory.

Yes. If he were a pitcher, they’d say he was getting under the throws.
Someone like Elly, who has a GREAT arm, sometimes relies too much on his natural talent, and slips up on fundamentals. Like you said and Larkin, footwork prevents throwing errors, by getting in the right position to make and accurate throw.
Let’s hope Larkin or Francona straightens him out. He may not become an Ozzie Smith but he could be much better defensively. And likely will become so.
Was at the game and sat behind reds dugout. Section 127. Was very happy to see the team erase 3 run deficit and win in extra innings. Bullpen was very good. Would love to sweep the Yankees but winning the series is huge for this teams confidence.
Reds , brewers and cards all playing very good baseball at this time.
Reds , brewers and cards all playing very good baseball at this time.
Still would love to pick up a corner outfielder and would love to get our starting pitching back and healthy.
Key moment of the game,
NY manager taking Rodon out of the game with 88 pitches.
Tito would have him pitch 7th
Division is crunching at the top, with only Pirates left behind. Reds should find a way to defeat the Brewers and the Cards if they want to chase them, there’re still six games left against each of them. Espinal is killing any given opportunity for the team to score, as much as a good defender he’s his bat turns everything down.
Marte and Hayes are on the horizon so who gets sent down. Likely Joe and Hinds but in my mind Espinal needs to be traded or dropped given all of the infield talent the Reds have . He seems to be in a deep rut of grounding weakly to the left side and likely leads the league in grounding into double plays. He has absolutely no power and there are backups for SS and 2B and now with CES and Marte able to play 3B.
Espinal far too valuable defensively to simply drop. Marte’s struggles at 3rd well documented. Santiago is an ideal end of game defensive replacement. Clearly he isn’t hitting well right now, and has been over played out of necessity. Previously, he’s been a great professional AB, even minus the power. He’s a keeper.
Marte is weeks away and certainly not a Brooks Robinson at 3b in his own right.
Who else to handle the defense in late innings / close games?
Certainly not Lux or Steer, or really even CES.
They’re not going to rotate EDLC to 3b and McLain to SS as some folks here imply is a solution.
Espinal is a strong bench piece to have. True, he’s getting over played recently and his hitting has sorely dropped off.
But his career stats with Toronto and previously with the Reds have been more than adequate.
He’s a pro and likely will work his way out of things. But moving McLain and / or Lux to the #2 spot is a relief.
Also, FWIW, I too have wondered about Espinal and GIDP and while he’s up there, he’s not tops. In NL, it is Juan Soto himself at 14 GIDP. Espinal tied for 10th with 9. Someone for TB rings in with 20 in the AL.
Further, as a sign that we tend to think our team is “always” doing something more often, I would have sworn the Reds would be top 5 as a team in GIDP. Nope. They clock in at just below the average! MLB average is 52, Reds have 50. A’S lead all with 74.
Now, in turn, it sure seems like the Reds don’t turn many double plays, and this is VERY true. Tied for 2nd worst in all of baseball. This needs looked into… is this the pitching staff being fly ball prone? Positioning?
IDK, I had a different take on the 11th. I didn’t see Elly stopping at 2nd as an egregious error. It wasn’t hit that deep, and everyone here has seen enough of ELDC making TOOTBLANS out of aggression. People would be outraged if he made an out there, and rightly so. It was not a given he’d get there. I thought it was a sign of recognizing he scores just as easily from 2nd as from 3rd on most hits. The game was now tied, there was zero reason to push it with no outs.
Friedl, on the other hand, I agree was caught in no man’s land. It looked bad, but I forgive the hustle play there.
Yes, better safe than sorry with nobody out and some decent hitters coming up.
I think it was EDLC chugging into second that raised some concerns.
Some question about whether he was on top of the score / game, etc.
Pirates manager pulled Cruz for a lack of hustle on a couple plays and he took it well.
Looks like some folks chatted up EDLC about the whole chain of events.
Better way to handle it, if it works.
Yes, his TOOTBLANS are incredibly annoying, but he seems to be cutting back on them, improving situational awareness.
Somewhat.
All’s well that ends well.
Yeah, Friedl’s move was a tough one, caught between two tough options.
That one didn’t work out so well.
But understandable.
My concern was, given his injuries last season, was having himself get banged up diving after an uncatchable ball.
He’s been having a great season, and I’d really hate for him to go on the IL again at this time.
Or any time.
500-550 ABs, 100 runs scored for Friedl would be awesome.
I don’t know. If you watch the replay, it appears for a second he was starting to walk in towards the mound (as if the game was over) before going back to the bag.
Aside from EDLC turning around to the left side of the plate versus RH pitching, the only left-handed batting PA in the game for the Reds was Lux’s pinch hit game winner.
The Reds right-handed hitters tied the game at 3 and again at 4 versus RH pitching with the help of 1 left-hand PA from EDLC.
Maybe the time for lock-step platooning by the Reds can come to an end?
Oops. I forgot all about Friedl who is a 2 way guy! Sorry.
Well they’re 29 games deep into the 39 game stretch against winning teams. 17-12 is pretty darn good considering how they were playing coming in. SD is 19-22 on the road so no reason they can’t win the series this weekend. They have tomorrow off to rest the pen and get their pitching lined up. After that is Boston and they dealt off Devers and are clearly rebuilding so it might be a good time for that series.
They got dominated by Rodon last night so lefties are still an issue. Hays should help and I really hope Tito plays CES/Hines every day? Hays/Lux would probably squeeze out Hines from playing every day, but Hines/Friedl/Fraley is our best defensive OF. Marte is coming too….good problem to have I guess. Erasing Espinal’s .000 batting average when it matters will help as well.
The Red Sox aren’t rebuilding. They just decided that they had had enough of Rafael Devers, and found a team willing to take on $250 million and give them a 2024 first-round pick and 3 arms, including Jordan Hicks. They have that money to spend, now, and Kyle Tucker in their sights.
Boston has a ton of good young position players, but pitching injuries are piling up. The Reds are also lucky that they will miss Alex Bregman, who is expected back around the ASG.
I hope the BoSox aquire Tucker! Would serve The Stupid Cubs right!
Burns looked fantastic. The umpire was terrible, and I can’t remember the sequence, but Burns got a pitch called a ball, when it looked like a strike on the inside corner. He then threw two more balls outside and well out of the zone.
After that 3 – 0 he worked himself back to a 3 – 2, then punched out the hitter.
For a rookie making his debut against the Yankee’s he was very poised.
Greene and Abbott better watch their backs if they want to remain the top dogs of the rotation. That’s going to be a fun trio to watch.
I believe he had 3-0 three times, first two Ks, and didn’t walk a batter.
Impressive to not give in vs the Yankees lineup on a 3 – 0 count.
I look forward to the ABS system. The ump called one pitch to Aaron Judge a ball that was center of the plate and at least two baseball diameters below the top of the zone. There really is no good reason to miss calls like that anymore.
That one was the “Judge Effect” imo. It was so bad that there was no other explanation for it.
Well…its apparent to me that one of the most important takeaways of the game is that Chase Burns’ sister is an absolutely gorgeous young lady. Beautiful family. Another important takeaway is that I’m pretty sure the abrupt body temperature change experienced by Gavin Lux seemed genuinely distressing to his physical well being.
Ha!
Great story, too, from Burns’s parents discussing how they met in the Navy and that Burns was a result of their ‘fraternizing’.
Born in an Italian hospital. I wonder if he’s been back?
I believe the word for Burns sister is Bellissimo!
One thing that I found interesting from last night:
It has been mentioned by others (and by Doug) about the horrendous call against Elly in the 8th inning. That pitch, which looked at least a few inches below the bottom of the zone, cost us a very fast baserunner. The bad call was magnified even more when Steer followed up with a hit and then Stephenson had a deep flyout. A sequence that almost assuredly would have scored Elly had the correct call been made.
The interesting part, though, is what happened the next inning. The Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm gets a strike called on the same exact low pitch as Elly. Rough call, but hey, they can’t say the ump favored one team. But unlike Elly, who walked back to the dugout after striking out, Chisholm was irate. He argued during the at-bat, after the at-bat, and then argued even more after the inning was over, eventually getting himself tossed.
Just interesting to note the difference between Elly’s more mature reaction to a bad call, compared to Chisholm’s tirade.
I often wonder if umps look at the location of controversial pitches after the game to see what the fuss was all about, then see that they missed the pitch by not one but several inches?
I’m sure some umps like CB Buckner (and Angel Hernandez before he retired) could care less. But I think some do care.
Hinds and Joe can both be optioned and recalled. Perhaps the Reds could shuttle them to get Hinds steady PAs.
Hinds has been called up twice. He can be cycled 2 (or maybe 3) more times this season without being exposed to waivers if sent back. Joe was on option to AAA when the Reds acquired him and called him up. Presumably, he has 3 or 4 potential option/ recall cycles left for 2025.
My day is off to not the best start. This was meant to be a reply to Indy Red Man about 4 main comments above. 😉
Your day is off to an excellent start. The Reds are hot, and they should have Hays, Marte and Greene back soon.
It is fair to say the Reds have a competitive team now. They are two games out in the Wild Card race. They just beat the Yankees twice. I hope they can add some additional relief help. You cannot have enough pitching. They need to have depth with the relief pitching, especially if there are injuries in July, August, or September.
Both Rondon and Boone said the same that Rondon was gassed due to high heat and humidity. That helped the Reds for sure but the relief pitcher giving CES a hanging curve ball right down the middle was a gift. Reds are +12 in non division games and -8 in division games. Why? I think that’s because divisional teams exploit Reds weaknesses better. CES would not see a hanging curve ball in that situation when we played Cubs and Brewers. They would give CeS a bunch of sliders out of strike zone.
I think that is a pretty good point. CES big problem (as many have observed) is chasing the pitch outside the zone (or even hittable). I think I saw him hit an HR on a low inside pitch (out of the zone), that he could reach. He has a lot of trouble recognizing the slider from most right handed pitchers, and the NL Central teams have “the book” on him.
It seems easy for us watching on TV or up in the stands to pick on him, but he has to overcome this if he wants to succeed in the Majors. Otherwise, he gets a steady diet of sliders out of the zone.
Espinal early in the season was one of Reds top hitters. Then he inexplicably stopped hitting the other way and pulled everything to 3rd base side. He’s still a great defense replacement at 3rd but man I hope he can get back to hitting so I can yell Vamos
Reds have aprox 68 stolen bases so far this year. Last year at this time they had 190 as a team. Very interesting.
Green light all the time with no accountability vs yellow now, I suspect.
Baseball Reference has the 2024 team has having 207 for the entire season.
They definitely are not running as much. Part of it is that Elly is protecting his hamstring a bit; and part of it is that Tito isn’t pushing them to run as much as Bell did, as evidenced by much lower SBs by Steer and Fraley.
Thanks Ed. I will have to check my references better. I am sure though SB are down considerably from last year.
Love this

Lots of posts on Espinal.
Fun fact
He now has 10 GDP and is 2nd in NL in GDP/PA.
I checked those stats too, and I was humbled to see Stephenson only had two when I checked. I think of him as a DP machine but the data shows different.
Best game of the year. I haven’t been so pumped up and excited since … well, since Barlow got out of that bases-loaded, nobody-out situation in extra innings vs. St. Louis. But the Reds showed so much to be excited for — great potential in Burns, big hits by CES and Lux, pitchers made big pitches when they had to be made, getting a walk-off winner. It felt like a big game between two good teams.
THIS is why I have watched Reds baseball for 50-plus years.
I was surprised at the weak infield defense the Yankees are currently putting on the field. Misplayed ground balls where infielders laid back rather than charging lead to at least three base runners. Limited range laterally too. Steer, CES, Lux or Marte would all be upgrades for NY at 3rd based on what I saw Monday and Tuesday. We might be a little spoiled watching McLain, EDLC and Steer day to day. Most of us would go crazy if we watched that Yankee infield every game.
I have a connection to one of the (very) minority owners of the Yankees. He tells me they are searching hard for infield upgrades before the trade deadline and are specifically interested in Gavin Lux. We’ll see if that turns into anything interesting. Same guy also told me when I first got to know him “There’s nothing more silent than George Steinbrenner’s silent partners.”
HA!
I always loved the Seinfeld episodes where George Costanza had to interact with “George Steinbrenner”.
Reds should have traded Candyman to them. For Judge, maybe.
Very impressed with Lyon Richardson, and to a slightly less degree Connor Phillips. Both pitched in higher pressure than typical. Reds need more BP depth, and some of these young guys could step into those roles. (Aside from GA returning, they really have no one else ready in AAA. Sorry, Mey isn’t ready until he can control his walk rate.) Need a hard throwing LHP instead of Rogers, who has underwhelmed all season.
Tony Santillan’s arm may fall off before the AS break at this pace.
Not sure they will do this, but if Hunter/Lowder end up coming back in the second half and absent a trade, I’d like to see Martinez moved back into the long relief role. He is special in that he can pitch several innings in any part of the game. Seeing him come out of the BP a couple of times this past week has been fun. He’s not been that special as a starter, at least yet.
I was impressed by Richardson, and have been in past appearances as well.
I felt like Phillips was bailed out by the yankees last night, and glad he didn’t need to go out for another frame. He only threw 6 strikes out of 13 pitches. I don’t view Phillips as a long term BP piece. He just can’t find the zone consistently.
I wonder, because of innings limits, whether they might move Burns to the pen?
I think there’s actually a good chance we see Martinez moved back into the bullpen. But 3 things have to happen:
1) Hunter Greene comes back from his injury
2) None of the other starters (Abbott, Lodolo, Singer) get injured
3) Burns pitches well enough to force the Reds to keep him in the rotation
A rotation with a top 4 of Greene-Abbott-Burns-Lodolo is fun to think about. Then add in a healthy Rhett Lowder and we will have a young rotation other teams will drool over.
Yeah agreed. And I still have high hopes for Petty. He has great stuff. And having Williamson and Aguiar as the next men up is great as well.
Lowder looked fantastic in his MLB time last year. His health is first and foremost. Let him fully heal. He has amazing upside and gives the Reds quite the starting rotation.
Abbott has been absolutely stellar this season and the Reds should have been already in extension talks with him. He’s got this moxie and smarts about him that just make him so nasty to hit against.
Martinez just hits another gear when he’s out of the bullpen. He’s downright dominant. He’s had some great starts too. My concern is just that he’s gone after this year given what he’s going to get financially. Take that money and lock up some younger talent that’s proven that they’re worth a risk/long term commitment.
Love what Richardson is doing out of the bullpen. He’s been terrific. Phillips and Petty certain have potential, especially Petty at only 22.
The question is, what is Burns’ inning limit this season and, another question, how many does he have left? I can’t imagine that he’d get much further into the season as a starter, but pitching an inning or two at a time as an 8th inning guy or closer would keep him available for a lot longer. Plus, if we assume that Greene will be back before too long, the need for bullpen help is more dire. I do hope that he starts long enough to open the series next Monday against the Red Sox: I’m going to the game.
greenmtred, that’s the question right there.
Didn’t Lowder have between 140-150 innings last year between minors and MLB? I’d assume Burns would get somewhere in that ballpark.
And have fun in Boston!
Burns pitched 100 in college last year and more in the fall instructional league for the Reds. So he could likely be 130-50 this year. He’s only at 66 so far so he should be able to get into September.
Thanks Jason and ATH.
Spiers will likely be another BP option once he is back. Still hoping Mey or Maxwell will step up and find some consistency.
I think Connor Phillips deserves some recognition for his outing last night. I cringed a little when he came in to such a big situation, but he pitched well. So, props to Connor!
Jim Bowden at it again. lol He’s kind of the opposite of krall. If it were possible to bring the two together you might have something.
https://blogredmachine.com/reds-trade-proposal-former-gm-instantly-reminds-fans-why-he-was-fired?utm_campaign=FanSided+Daily&utm_source=FanSided+Daily&utm_medium=email&sc=c3a8b03aa4675c74ec4c35e25be58c93e3c61b5ef7e6fc8f70a8923b59647687
Yeah that would be a stupid trade for the Reds…which Bowden is good at.
Skenes on the hill against Brewers today. Good luck, buddy!
Crazy to think how many wins he’d have on a good team. He’s so impressive to watch pitch.
Skenes is good but the guy he is going against is just as impressive.
With all due respect, key moment of the game was without a doubt, CES’s bases clearing double to tie the game up.
Counterpoint: There was a doubt since I picked a different moment.
Haha! 😀
I have a question in regards to Jeimer Candelerio and Luis Robert Jr.
If the rumors are true that the White Sox are willing to eat some salary to help facilitate a trade why aren’t the Reds trying to to get Robert and send Candelerio and a top prospect. Salary would be a mute point at that situation and the White Sox could give time to Jeimer to heat up over the next month and flip him again if he rebounds. Just putting a thought out there
That was beautiful to watch, such a clutch moment and Trevino was hustling. Really like what Trevino brings to this Reds team too, both offensively and defensively.
Counting on Skenes to beat Milwaukee but it does not look like it. So frustrating 🙂
Misiorowski is just dominating the Pirates. He’s looking fantastic. I mean I get that they stink but he’s quite impressive so far.
