The Cincinnati Reds lost the first game of this series last night when St. Louis put together a big 7th inning thanks to poor pitching and questionable defense. The Cardinals will look to pick up a series win this afternoon as the Reds appear to be going with a bullpen day. Today’s first pitch under the scorching hot sun will be at 2:15pm ET.

Brent Suter

The Reds are going to give Brent Suter his third start of the season today. The good news is that Cincinnati won both of the others, so perhaps this can be a trend. In both starts he threw 3.0 innings and didn’t give up an earned run. Given that he pitched 1.1 innings two days ago, that might be a big ask of him today.

The splits for Suter are quite big. Left-handed hitters are hitting slightly better than you are this season with a .192 average, almost no walks, and almost no power. Right-handed hitters are finding more success. They are hitting for a solid average against him with mediocre power output.

Sonny Gray

When Sonny Gray has been good this season, he’s been real good. But when he’s been bad, he’s been real bad. In his last outing he was bad. Facing Milwaukee he allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk in 4.1 innings.

The splits for Gray this season had been quite big. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a high average and for plenty of power. They rarely walk, though. Lefties are hitting for a much lower average, walk twice as often as righties, and are hitting for no power. Not shown below, though, are his home and road splits. His home ERA is three runs lower (2.85).

This is the beginning of our next opportunity to drop the first game and still win the series.

    • Jim Walker

I thought the broken streak was winning the first game of a 3 game set, then losing the next two. Or maybe there were two streaks? Or, I was just confused, which seems to be one of my personal streaks at times. 😉

      • RedlegScott

Im probably the one who’s confused, Jim. lol

      • Mark Moore

I think it was Lose the first game, lose the series.

    • RedlegScott

@both of you: I think it was lose all three games, win the series.

  2. CincyDo

Minimize errors and we have a good shot at this. Reds usually have good success against former pitchers, hope the offense scores some early runs, Will see what happens. Francona needs to instill a belief in his players that they can beat the cardinals

  3. Mark Moore

Saturday picnic of BBQ Red Bird sounds good to me.

Hope we shell Sonny but good.

  4. RedsGettingBetter

I know Gray is gonna struckout a lot of Reds hitters today but despite of that I hope they also bounce back today and could hit him well and in the clutch.. I’m a little hesitant about using a bullpen day since there are no good performances recently although using Petty as starter is not better either I guess…

  5. LDS

I had a good feeling last weekend after the Reds dropped the first game against the Tigers and it panned out. Today, my confidence isn’t nearly as high. Getting swept by the Cardinals seems more likely than winning the next two or even one of the next two. And Krall continues to sit on this thumbs, doing nothing to help the team. Dump Hampson for Hinds – even a little Hawthorne Effect is something to the fans.

  6. Klugo

Still POed we let Gray go to St Louis.

    • LDS

Actually Minnesota, but they got back Chase Petty. That’s been game changing thus far. Besides, Gray is making $25m this season and more next season. You know this cheap ownership would never have sprung for that. They wouldn’t even go for Castillo who was both younger and cheaper.

  7. Roger Garrett

Hoping Elly can lead us today to a win.

  8. Mark Moore

What’s the balance between being wildly aggressive and too passive? Backwards K’s on one down the can really bug me.

    • Melvin

The old saying, “Protect the plate with two strikes”. 🙂

  9. Tom Mitsoff

John Sadak just said it’s 99 degrees in St. Louis. It’s “only” 92 in Madison, WI. 😉

  10. Roger Garrett

Looking for a big game from Benson today.Reds are just in a funk right now over the last 14 or so innings.Time to snap out of it.

  11. Melvin

Did their lefty batter hit our lefty opener? That’s no fair. Is it?

  12. RedsGettingBetter

A bad located pitch is meaning 2 runs deficit

    • VaRedsFan

It was actually about 6 inches inside. Don’t know how he didn’t just pull it foul…or ground weakly to 1B

  13. H.B.

Not the start we needed. Hope we can bunch some hits.

  14. Tom Mitsoff

If Suter gets lit up, we’ll see Petty to eat some innings. It will be a big opportunity for him, because someone will need to start next Friday against San Diego. If Petty gets another chance and can’t convert, I’d say there’s a decent chance we’ll see Chase Burns then.

  15. VaRedsFan

59-101 vs the Cards in the new Busch Stadium.

  16. Melvin

What happened to Espinal going the other way with men on base? He’s getting pull happy too often.

  17. dimondfvr

One out, a man on third, another missed opportunity.

  18. Tom Mitsoff

Quite surprising to see Nick Martinez warming. I believe he only pitched 2.2 innings last start against Minnesota.

    • Tom Mitsoff

They may ride him for some middle-inning work today, then slot him back into the rotation next Friday — a spot which right now would be TBD.

  19. Melvin

McLain going opposite field a lot which is a big reason why his rise in hitting.

  20. Mark Moore

TJ hit that hole nicely. Hate the 1st pitch GIDP but we did get a run out of it.

  21. Melvin

Good job by Friedl. We got something going. I was JUST ABOUT to say NO DP. Oh well. We got a run in.

  22. Mark Moore

That’s on House. Should not have sent him home.

  23. Roger Garrett

I love Espy and he is a good utility player. He has played in 67 of the Reds 76 games with 215 at bats.If he continues to play a lot or bat a lot its not a good thing. We know he has played a bunch because of injuries and a bunch because we have lefty hitters that don’t play against lefties but it doesn’t change the fact he is a utility player known for his glove and not his bat.No homers in those 215 at bats and 20 in over 1500 for his career.Right now the starters at third and first today have a total of close to 500 at bats with 6 homers. That will not get it done and we all know it.Help is coming but can we hold on until it gets here? Lets hope so.

    • Melvin

CES must be locked in the dog house.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Your other options at third are Lux and CES, and both showed this week why they should not be playing third base on a regular basis.

  24. Melvin

That was not smart to try for home there. Even he was a dead duck.

    • Jason T.

He had no business trying for home. Love Elly but that was bad baseball.

      • Melvin

If he didn’t what was TERRIBLE base coaching. Virtually no chance unless a pretty bad throw. The kind of thing you’d definitely try in Little League though. 🙂

    • Mark Moore

Yep. And it’s on House for sending him.

  25. RedsGettingBetter

Wow when the things aren’t working in the Reds way …

  26. Kevin H

What a play by Gray to that ball up. Otherwise a triple and run by Elly.

  27. RedsGettingBetter

Nick MArtinez with 1 day of rest after 50+ pitches on Thursday is pitching

  28. Melvin

Tito didn’t sound to happy with Martinez giving up three HR his last two starts. We may see Burns sooner than we think.

    • Roger Garrett

Yes he was asked about reflecting and he quickly said well he doesn’t have much time to reflect. Now I thought he meant Martinez only had 4 days to reflect but I guess he only had a little over 48 hours.I love it even if it doesn’t work out.

    • Mark Moore

Sadak actually explained it pretty well.

      • CI3J

Sorry, I’m not actively watching the game, just checking in every now and then.

        What did he say?

      • Mark Moore

Basically Tito and Martinez talked about it in light of the 50 pitches and short outing. Martinez agreed to the plan and we got what we got. I think Petty factors into the mix as others have said.

    • Jason T.

Don’t quite understand that no matter how the explanation went or the reasoning. Glad it turned out for the positive. Starting pitching is thin no matter how many pitches Martinez did or didn’t throw 2 days ago. Plus I think it tells Petty that you have little faith in him.

      • Melvin

I kind of think Tito is protecting the confidence of Petty and doesn’t want him to get discouraged. Of course that only goes so far.

      • Jason T.

        That’s fair. I hope that’s the case.

      • CincyDo

Maybe Francona is going for the dub today. Worry about next week when next week comes.

  29. Roger Garrett

Cubs pouring it on the Mariners and the Brewers doing the same thing to the Twins.Good time to bounce back with a win.

  30. Roger Garrett

Good time to try and steal right here.Don’t think Espy can drive Benson in from first but we will see.

  31. Indy Red Man

So glad they found a way to get Espy in vs a righty.

  32. RedsGettingBetter

I wonder why Tito always put Espinal in a spot different as the 9th…he should be 9th when he is playing… Where did Tito get the idea of Espinal being a good hitter from?

    • JayTheRed

Espinal is a good hitter when he is not playing every day. He is a strong option when he hasn’t played in almost every game of the week. I’ve been saying this since we got him. He is getting overused, and he is not used to that.

  33. Mark Moore

Playing on days as hot as this is just plain miserable.

  34. Melvin

Elly is sick. Easy to do on a day like today.

    • Melvin

He’s NOT going to come out unless he absolutely has to. He’s gamer for sure.

      • Jason T.

He’s a competitor that’s for sure. Doesn’t like missing or leaving games. Just want to make sure his health isn’t put in jeopardy.

      • Tom Mitsoff

The question becomes, just how effective can even a standout player be when he is sick?

      • Melvin

Yep to both of you. Sometimes throwing up helps and sometimes is weakens a person. We’ll see.

  35. Jason T.

That was a great stretch by the “undersized” Steer at first.

    • Mark Moore

Sadak saying the stats put him 2nd behind Matt Olsen in fielding.

      • Jason T.

That’s impressive! My eye test said I thought he’d be up there but didn’t know he’s 2nd.

  36. Mark Moore

And the Buckner Bizzarro Zone grows … 😐

  37. RedsGettingBetter

    Definitely McLain is hitting better

    • RedsMonk65

Yes, I’ve noticed he appears to be slowly coming around. Now hitting well over his weight.

  38. Mark Moore

This version of MattyMc is what we’ve all been expecting and hoping for.

  39. Melvin

Mighty Mac is finally starting to hit and that’s awesome.

  40. Melvin

Hit Friedl on the knee. Hope it doesn’t linger.

  41. Magnum44

I don’t comment much anymore, but with Suter and Martinez going today I would bet a paycheck Burns is up for the Martinez spot (They are on the same day) Martinez is as available in the bullpen makes the start on Thursday.

  42. Mark Moore

Gray is NOT going to give him strikes … but Elly didn’t care.

    • Jason T.

Elly made solid contact, that’s unfortunate it didn’t squeeze by.

  43. RedlegScott

Can’t seem to find that clutch hit.

  44. Kevin H

Great player by Cardinals 2nd baseman. Elly hit it hard and almost got it through

  45. Dennis Westrick

One thing about tuning in late to a Reds game is that some things never change in those innings you missed! See where the batter Suter walked scored on the following HR! I hate WALKS by Reds pitchers!

Plus, see where our old friend Sonny Gray has 5 SOs in five innings! Reds hitters need to be patient with Gray pitching and take advantage of any mistakes which will ultimately lead to scoring opportunities!

Despite the ugly losses in the last 2 games there’s always an opportunity to start a new winning streak!

  46. DaveCT

Did you see the look of relief on McLain’s face when he hit to second base?

I always have to give guys credit for dealing with adversity and battling their way through.

  47. Indy Red Man

Lux now dropping like a rock. Can’t hit lazy fly ball on a 3-1 pitch. We just suck with situational hitting. 8-24 runs in a few games hides that fact statistically

  48. CincyDo

Gray didn’t give Elly anything to hit in that at bat

  49. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds seem to have lost the momentun they had until Wednesday…

  50. DHud

If the key to baseball was walking the first batter you saw, Gibault would be a perennial All Star

  51. Tom Mitsoff

Well, that is a horrible way to start an inning in a one-run game.

  52. RedsGettingBetter

Gibaut is making the things harder

  53. Dennis Westrick

Good start by Gibaut! A leadoff walk! Just so frustrating to watch Reds RPs failing to challenge hitters and get ahead in the count!

    Cubs are winning big early!

And as I’m typing Gibaut walks his second straight batter! Suicide by walks!

  54. Kevin H

Ian frustrated with self after that second walk. Good to see the fire of. “Come on”

    • DHud

      NOW.

      Not work through the inning.

      Not “hey let’s battle here”

      Not “get this next guy”

      Get. Him. OUT!

      • Frogem

Dude, you’re right, but won’t happen.

  55. RedlegScott

C’mon, Tito. Do a Captain Hook, please.

  56. Tom Mitsoff

That’s really about as bad as it gets from a relief pitching standpoint. Thank goodness for a pickoff.

  57. Indy Red Man

CES something nagging? Anyone heard anything? Can’t play Espy vs righties. We don’t have enough to carry people.

Gibaut 2023 was fun. GL with your life’s work

  58. RedsGettingBetter

Come on , three walks is absurd … release him now…

  59. Mark Moore

At least the back-pick helped a little. But 3 straight free passes …

    Somebody check in on Dennis.

  60. Dennis Westrick

Gibaut with walk No. 3! Incredible! And after being ahead 0-2 in the count! It’s the adult version of The Bad News Bears!

    • Kevin H

I agree the Cardinals sure did that inning

  61. Tom Mitsoff

Nice scoreless inning by Gibaut. 😉

  62. Mark Moore

And the Unassisted Bike Helmets to the rescue.

  63. Kevin H

What a way to battle by Ian, and great base running blunders by cards.

I thought Reds were only team who did that? LOL

    • Dennis Westrick

Yes! Nice to see the Reds are not the only team that took the TOOTBLAN class!

  64. Dennis Westrick

With the pickoff at second for the 1st out and a line-drive DP to end the inning, Gibaut should rush out and buy a bunch of Ohio lottery tickets!

    • Kevin H

U make me laugh man, keep doing what u do!!!

      • Dennis Westrick

Like the line in the Waylon Jennings song – “I’ve Always Been Crazy, But It’s Kept Me from Going Insane!”

  65. Roger Garrett

Same story when you don’t score.Every pitch is high leverage by every pitcher.Reds seem to be content to just do what they do while they wait on Hayes and Marte which could be weeks. Then you know they won’t be able to just step in and start to hit for awhile all along we fall behind even further.Just got to do better then that.Maybe they do have a plan beyond waiting.Surely hope so cause this just isn’t fun right now with the Yanks and Padres up next.

    • RedAlert

Wish they did have a plan , but this front
office flys by the seat of their paints ….
Incapable of making any moves that
improve this team and for an owner that only cares about bobbleheads and fireworks .

  66. RedAlert

Stephenson is a strikeout machine… just bad !

  67. Melvin

Thank you very much Mr. Lefty Pitcher walking Benson. 🙂

    • Mark Moore

Pitcher didn’t walk him … Chumpire Buckner did.

  68. CincyDo

Mr Houdini at it again. Ian Gaut, lmao, 3 walks and escaped.

  69. Mark Moore

Buckner completely missed that one to give Benson the freebie. Talk about a guy who needs to go back to the Minors 😉

  70. Kevin H

I am a fan of Espinal, however him to the bench for games cant come soon enough

    • Mark Moore

His glove is stellar. He’s been a decent hitter at times, especially when he was trying to lace on oppo. Something changed and it ain’t for the better.

      • DaveCT

I think it is mostly over exposure of a guy with limitations, such that less is more.

  71. JA

    Cardinales has well scooter Reds.
BB to Benson and then face Espinal . A no brainer

  72. RedsGettingBetter

Well, more bad news, Reds reached 6th inning trailing…

  73. Indy Red Man

Espy with the 42 mph exit velocity 23 footer. What a bomb

  74. Dennis Westrick

It appears that Ty Steve is back in a funk! Not good!

  75. DaveCT

How the Reds respond to getting stagnant in this series — meaning next series but also tomorrow — will tell a lot about how resilient they are. If nothing else, playing teams like the Cubs, Brewers and Cards, that treat you like second class citizens, is a good measure of how good you are.

  76. Mark Moore

Buckner got medical attention … what he needs is a thorough eye exam and a refresher course on the strike zone.

    • Kevin H

Now Now lol…. a eye exam would be a start!!

  77. Dennis Westrick

Why do I always feel like Tito is waving the white flag when he puts Richardson in the game?

  78. JayTheRed

I don’t know what’s more entertaining the comments today or the game. Hate when the Reds play the Cardinals in St. Louis. It typically doesn’t go well.

    • Mark Moore

It’s the comments from The Nation … and I’m with you playing the Dirty WLB Birds.

    • Dennis Westrick

I’m never happy when the Reds lose! But I hate losing to the Dirty Birds! I view them as the Yankees of the NL the way they buy players!

    • DaveCT

Being the youngest of six kids, I can assure you the lack if fun playing the Cards may well have to do with being on the lower/lowest end of the food chain, and the Cards knowing it.

  79. RedlegScott

Two runs in 15 innings. Deja vu a over again?

  80. Roger Garrett

Matz will have two lefties next inning in Fraley and TJ and a third in Lux with Elly after that who is less then 200 against lefties.Cards just taking advantage of Krall’s roster.Same as last night and unless we get ahead tomorrow it will be more of the same.Sad as we wait and wait and wait.

  81. Kevin H

These comments today is why I enjoy this site. Good fun and laughs. Now let’s go!!!!

  82. Dennis Westrick

Gotta hand it to the Cards! Two runs on two measly hits! That’s what walks in front of HRs will do!

  83. RedAlert

Great pitching once again going to waste so far … it’s truly amazing …. And thier refusal to improve this offense

    • Kevin H

Two for Two Red… we gotta stop agreeing lol… 🙂

  84. Jim t

My prediction is the reds will get the win.

    • CincyDo

Right here right now. Man on, MM and TJ up next

    • Roger Garrett

Me too lets do it right here in this inning.

  85. RedsGettingBetter

After a good walk by Joe McLain keeps rolling with another double…Go!

  86. Mark Moore

    MattyMc on FIRE!!!

Time for Mr. Legit to make something happen.

  87. Dennis Westrick

Being a Good Old Boy from Kentucky who migrated to Florida in 1986, I’m sure I can Google a recipe or two on how to cook a cardinal in an air fryer or on the grill! Again, PETA, that’s humor!

  88. JA

If Reds don’t score here, they don’t deserve the win.

    • Indy Red Man

Elly. Wow. We needed that badly. Nice at-bats from Joe & Lux too. Matty back to #2 tomorrow maybe?

  89. Melvin

At least we got the run in. Tie game.

  90. RedsMonk65

I think Elly is feeling better! Reds up 4-2!

    • Dennis Westrick

Figures! I walk away for five minutes to fix a snack and miss Elley’s HR! Maybe I should stay away for the next 3 innings? Vote Y or N

  91. Mark Moore

OK, we’ll take that from Lux. New ballgame.

And #17 puts us on top!!!

  92. JB

Just turned it on to see McLain double. Now Elly homers. Nice

    • Mark Moore

2nd 2B and 3 hits for MattyMc today.

  93. JayTheRed

Elly!!!! oh and I love how Lux ducked that borderline pitch too.

  94. RedsGettingBetter

YESSS!! Lux & ELLY let the Reds going ahead… Rally Reds back!

  95. Jason T.

Nice getting some runs across. Thank you Elly.

  96. Melvin

And NOW we got the lead. EDLC doesn’t have to run hard on that one! 🙂

  97. RedlegScott

It all started with a Joe walk, Dennis.

    • Dennis Westrick

Proving once again that I am a baseball savant!

    • JayTheRed

Connor Joe can be a decent bench piece. Just not a starter.

      • Oldtimer

Merv Rettenmund, Terry Crowley, Bob Bailey, Mike Lum, Doug Flynn, Darrel Chaney, Joel Youngblood, Ed Armbrister, and Bill Plummer.

Same thing. The 1975 and 1976 Reds bench players. None great. All played a role for BRM.

PS I consider Dan Driessen as a starter both years (he would have been DH).

  98. dimondfvr

I’m pretty sure I even saw the home platee umpire smile on that one after Elly crossed the plate, 🙂

  99. Roger Garrett

Lux and Elly against a lefty and that is just great,Guess instead of Cards having us where they wanted us we actually had them where we wanted them. How about that?

  100. CincyDo

Reds have great success hitting in early count, first pitch particularly. Satisfying to see Elly homered off a change up, the pitch that got him all series against Minnesota.

    • Kevin H

Yep, you were calling that last series. As far as him struggling with the change up.

      Good to see

      • CincyDo

His bat is so quick, he can afford to stay back a bit and still hit the FB. Staying back allows him to hit the change up. He just needs to hold his horse, dont get over excited and swing too early.

  101. Kevin H

Mclain back to 2 spot? Dude is in fire and 10 game hitting streak…

  102. Mark Moore

A 2nd chance and he whiffs at a Ball 4 that even Buckner couldn’t have called a strike.

I agree, Ty is in a bit of a funk. Maybe Samantha’s 1-year B-Day will turn him around.

  103. Tom Mitsoff

I’m beginning to realize that it isn’t necessary to throw strikes to Tyler Stephenson. Keep an eye on how many non-strikes he swings at.

  104. JB

Contreras with the error.lol I dislike that guy.

  105. RedsGettingBetter

Stephenson swinging a very high ball to get struckout. It was the fourth ball

  106. RedlegScott

Your game to potentially win, Lyon.

    • Indy Red Man

Lyon reminds me of Cowboy Brantley physically. Maybe stronger. Kid has really grown

      • RedlegScott

He has 5 different pitches going.

    • Mark Moore

Dealt with the heart of their order in pretty good fashion.

  107. Jason T.

Lyon roared out there today. He’s fun to watch pitch.

  108. RedsGettingBetter

Richardson did a really great job today…

    • Mark Moore

Do you promise to walk him and clean up after him? 😀

  109. Roger Garrett

Does MM go back to the 2 spot or do you just leave him alone?

    • Mark Moore

Personally, I leave him alone until after the ASG break.

    • Jason T.

Once he can prove he can hit on the road I’d move him up. He was .132 in road games entering the series. Nice to see him getting hotter though.

  110. Mark Moore

Uncontested 3B from Steer!!! And oppo at that 😮

  111. Jason T.

Beautiful triple for Steer. Great to see.

  112. CincyDo

I still can’t get over Ian Gault. He has this look on his face that says he knows something we don’t. He gets himself in great trouble but then gets out of it. Maybe he does know something we don’t. Just can’t explain it.

    • RedlegScott

So fortunate to get out of that frame unscathed.

    • Mark Moore

Cowboy and Sadak were talking about him having 2 sketchy outings in a row. Jeff wondering if it’s the arm where he had the surgery. He’s obviously struggling.

  113. RedlegScott

Steer & Benson getting it done for another run.

    • JayTheRed

Nice to see that happening from two guys who have struggled a little lately.

  114. Roger Garrett

Benson doing the job right there. Two walks and a sac fly.One walk against a lefty

  115. Mark Moore

Joe whacked that one. I think he’s definitely a bench piece.

    • DaveCT

No issue with a good 26th nan who knows and understands his role.

I always thought he was a pain the butt when playing against us.

  116. Kevin H

So if Martinez is back to bullpen. Who goes down or dfa? My thought is Ian goes as you cant send Richardson down. Barlow or Roger’s go go too

      • Mark Moore

Agreed. He basically threw a live side today.

    • Roger Garrett

Something to think about but I doubt it.Just getting him back on track after back to back stinkers.

  117. Mark Moore

Throw the next pitch at the Bull …

  118. RedlegScott

My phone says 95 mph change-up. lol

  119. Mark Moore

Joe’s aggressive play saved a run … for the moment.

  120. JB

Winn roped that. McLain was lucky to get a glove on it.

  121. RedsGettingBetter

It’s Incredible after 2 outs bases empty…Santillan got in serious trouble

    • Mark Moore

The flair by Scott was a defensive swing. But the others were hit pretty well.

Kind of like that one from Burleson 😮

  122. JB

Should have replaced Santillan before Burleson.

  123. RedsGettingBetter

    Tito has waited too long….

    • Jim Walker

Amen, Melvin, Tito had to try and ride Santillan because there were 2 outs in the inning and nobody left to pitch the 9th except Pagan.

IMO, Tony got into trouble by falling behind the first two hitters to reach. He was trying for strikes on his breaking stuff and missed. With a 3 run lead and 2 outs, they should have been going right at both those guys from the get go. Give Burleson credit. He spoiled a good put away pitch ahead of his RBI hit.

  124. JayTheRed

Didn’t expect Santillan to kind of stink today. It happens even to the best pitchers. Hopefully they can hold the lead.

  125. Ozzie

4 outs needed from Pagan. The Reds need this divisional game.

  126. Ozzie

    Time to add on.
Pagan was big there. Great job.

  127. Kevin H

I like the fact Francona kept Tony in as long as he did. He trusts his guys to get out of the jams.

  128. CincyDo

Never easy to win in St Lo. Gotta dig deep.

  129. JA

NL Central opponents have Reds very studied. That’s normal.
What disturbs me is that seems Reds has never faces Ian Happ and the likes

  130. Roger Garrett

Well no luck against the lefty that time but let’s get 3 outs even the series and go for the series win tomorrow.

  131. Melvin

We went from The Lyon to The Tiger. Now to Panther Pagan? …..Kind of stretching it? 🙂

  132. RedsMonk65

Well, crap. Now we need to stop the bleeding and score a few more. Sigh….

  133. Mark Moore

Extra innings in this heat or do we just roll over now?

  134. JB

You could sense it that Arrenado was going deep.

    • Melvin

I’d still love to have him on my team.

  135. RedsGettingBetter

This is very awful…The Reds have a big problem in high leverage situations relievers right now…

  136. RedlegScott

Not good news when both Santillan and Pagan falter.

  137. GPod

you ask the BP to get 6 outs with a 3 run lead….is that too much to ask ?

  138. Ozzie

Uh oh. They were trying to protect Chase Petty. Will they go to him in the 10th?

  139. GPod

we have had our share of finding ways to lose games we should have won…lets not add to that

  140. RedlegScott

Gives up a solo shot then strikes out the side. Go figure. Score, Reds!

    • Jim Walker

Brantley pointed out they tried to start Arenado on 2 breaking pitches, and he burned them on the second one. In the 8th, with a 3 run lead, they got behind 2 or 3 batters throwing breaking pitches. That’s the common thread of the day.

  141. Melvin

Great bounce back by Panther Pagan. Now we’ve got to overcome our usual extra inning funk and WIN THIS GAME.

  142. Kevin H

Had your two best bullpen pitchers and well we are tied. That’s baseball in a nutshell.

  143. CincyDo

Extra inning in the house of Cards. It’s ski-Elly time. How about that? I have not heard the skyline time tune in a while but it just pops in my head.

  144. Roger Garrett

Hindsight is always 20/20 but if we had a power lefty to face all those lefty hitters like marched up there in the 8th well this game is over.Lets score a bunch right here and go home.

      • Melvin

Hes’ “swinging” at everything too. 😉

    • RedAlert

I don’t think Stephenson has a clue Ozzie

  145. Doc

Another BP meltdown? Didn’t have access to the game.

    • Mark Moore

El Tigre didn’t get it done and Pagan gave up a blast to Nolan to tie it.

  146. JB

Barlow,Rogers,Phillips and Petty are left in the pen. God help us.

  147. RedAlert

Stephenson is just pitiful … dude can’t put hardly anything in play

    • Mark Moore

Looking like an ugly slump right now

  148. William

Pagan should be the seventh inning reliever, and the Reds should bring in two relievers, one closer and another for the 8th inning. I do not see a reliever on this team that I want to see in the eighth and ninth inning against the Dodgers in the NL championship or Yankees in the World Series. Bring in these two relievers GM, and this team will be really good. The offense will continue to improve. Save your money on the outfielder. It is the “lights out” relievers that are needed. Two players.

  149. GPod

back to our 2025 play in extra innings….total ineptitude

    • Mark Moore

You thinking that’s asking too much today?

  150. RedsGettingBetter

Reds are i the verge of a heartbreaking loss …it hadn’t happened since many weeks ago

  151. DW

TySteve’s strikeout rate is becoming very concerning. Something like 36% on the season. A lot of K’s in big situations too.

  152. Melvin

Come on Jose. Trip and fall for your old team.

  153. JB

Bunting the runner over to 3rd. What a great idea.

    • Mark Moore

Can’t ask Elly to do that, though … 😐

      • JB

I could. It’s a team game. Nobody is above the team.

  154. Mark Moore

Perfect bunt and I do believe that will wrap it up.

  155. Ozzie

It seems to me the best strategy is always to play for one run if you are the visiting team in extras. How many times is a bunt thrown away, then you can add on. Having Elly lead off that inning was almost a disadvantage. I get not wanting to bunt him, but if anyone else is hitting, you bunt the runner over. The home team getting the first out without the runner moving up is huge. I just don’t get playing for one run and live for another inning.

  156. JB

So everybody knows your bunting and they still can’t get him. Incredible

  157. RedAlert

Ballgame another loss … awesome Job
    Barlow

  158. Redlegs1869

Didn’t we all know vs the Cards this is how it would end? I assumed it wouldn’t end well. Seldom does.

  159. Melvin

Whew. That was close. One miracle down. Two to go.

  160. RedsGettingBetter

I don’t know what happens when the Reds play NLC teams it’s incredible how they look diminished at all

  161. Mark Moore

Smart move by Steer to throw home. Remember that if we advance to the 11th.

  162. RedlegScott

Awesome recovery, Barlow! Bases loaded, no outs.

  163. Jim Walker

Stephenson with 3Ks on the day to add to a 29% K rate in the month of June.

  164. Mark Moore

    Complete HOUDINI inning 😮 😮 😮

  165. Melvin

THREE MIRACLES. Now we need a miracle scoring inning. 🙂

  166. JB

Barlow is the man. And how about that undersized first baseman? StEeR baby!

  167. Kevin H

Wow… I admit I turned tv off and followed that half inning on gameday.

    Turned tv back on lol

    • Tom Mitsoff

I had put their chances there at less than 1 percent in that scenario. Let’s go and get this one now.

  168. CincyDo

Barlow outldueled Gault and won the Houdini title. Gotta dig deep to win. Let’s go Reds

  169. RedsGettingBetter

Wow Barlow became Houdini there! what a scoreless inning…Will it hunt the Cards??

  170. Ozzie

Please play for one run. Play fundamental offense. Fundamentals will win this game. The Reds defense in the 10th proves it.

  171. Jim Walker

What a job by Barlow and the defense. Now the Reds need to get one run to put the pressure on the home team.

    • Tom Mitsoff

Moments like that are pure joy to watch.

    • Mark Moore

I seriously doubt it. May want to schedule a wellness check.

  172. Mark Moore

OK, Will … here’s your chance.

  173. Melvin

Get at least one run in please…..pretty please…with a cherry on top. 🙂

    • JB

Ok Espy maybe not. Lord that was terrible

  174. RedsGettingBetter

    Horrible Espinal…my….it’s unbelievable

  175. Melvin

Put it in play Espinal couldn’t put it in play there.

  176. Ozzie

The Reds feel destined to lose this game. Ks give you NO chance. NO chance. Arghhh…

  177. Kevin H

Baseball is such a mental game
    Man, these guys battling today.

  178. Indy Red Man

Espy ‘s rap name is MC Strands Alot

  179. Mark Moore

Not that I trust CES, but he wasn’t an option at any point?

    • Kevin H

Have a feeling CES is hurt and we dont know. My only explanation

    • JB

I don’t get it. The guy has what one error at 3rd and it’s like he has the plague now

    • Jim Walker

In his previous 2 games, CES had only 1 K, a 108MPH hit, and several other balls over 95MPH EV, including a couple of warning track fly outs.

My suspicion is growing that they are setting him up for an IL visit to make room to activate Candelario.

  180. Tom Mitsoff

Nobody I’d rather have up here than McLain.

  181. Ozzie

Matt! Here’s your chance buddy. Just hit a dinger and put it out of reach. DINGER I say!

  182. Jeremiah

This Maton guy is pretty tough, maybe Mclain can come through for the Reds here.

  183. GPod

Memo to the reds….the object of the game is to score in extra innings….they didn’t get that message when the season started

  184. JB

Highest of highs today and the lowest of lows. Reds need another miracle.

  185. Magi210

No one wants to win this one. Just call it a tie.

  186. Jeremiah

Man 3 Ks with runner on Third, that’s rough! Overall Mclain though is improving. Stephenson now becoming the bigger worry to me, is he swinging for the fences often? Maybe he’s still recovering from injury too, but way too many strikeouts.

  187. dimondfvr

1 for 14 with Runners in Scoring position. Not good.

  188. RedsGettingBetter

Can’t score in extra when they are visitors apparently…it’s frustrating

  189. RedAlert

Deserve to lose period …. Brutal man on third no outs … fail fail fail and continue to fail

  190. Ozzie

Poor Chase Petty. What a crappy situation to put him in.
    Let’s see what he’s got.

  191. Tom Mitsoff

If their chances last inning were less than 1 percent, I’d put it in similar range with Petty coming in. Francona may have decided that Rogers and Phillips aren’t available today.

  192. Jeremiah

Oh boy, tough spot for Chase Petty. Lack of depth and injuries now starting to catch up to the Reds. Cards and Brewers just seem tougher than the Reds it seems. Maybe Francona can help change that.

  193. Roger Garrett

Awful at bats by Benson and Espy just no other way to say it.

    • JB

Espy is Espy. Benson seems to take a step forward and then 2 steps back. I wish the light turned on and he would take off.

    • RedAlert

No doubt … a legit MLB lineup would
probably not include either one of these guys

  194. Mark Moore

I’m running out of Miracle Juice … anybody have a few drops left to get this out?

    • Votto4life

Yes Pozo is a 4th string catcher who was living out of his car until recently with his wife and young son. It’s a great story and I wish the young man nothing but the best last.

    • Melvin

Not to pick on Benson but as far as I can remember the only outfielder that’s thrown anybody out all year is in AAA. I take that back. Lux played one off the wall and threw a runner out at second. Can’t remember any more.

  195. RedlegScott

What a tough spot for that kid to be in.

  196. Kevin H

Great game by both clubs. Petty showed moxy to me.

Now bullpen is abit taxed. 3 game losing streak stinks. Yet to me they battled today.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He sure did. I was impressed. I think he’ll get another chance.

  197. Daytonnati

So much of it is culture. The Cardinals expected to win. The Reds hoped to win.

  198. Melvin

Is it just me or was that a poor throw from RF?

  199. JB

Would have liked to see Hinds and his arm on that play to the plate.

    • RedAlert

Agree … should already be back up here

  200. Tom Mitsoff

You just hope for this team to come up with a huge win in these situations against the division rivals. Even with a 10th inning miracle, it didn’t happen.

    • RedsGettingBetter

Cards scoring 2 runs on 2-out 4 straight hits in the 8th inning set the tone to this heartbreaking final

  201. Tom Diesman

What a great game. Fun stuff. We’ll get them tomorrow.

    • Noyes

Amen. Can’t say this team isn’t entertaining.

  202. Dennis Westrick

Brutal loss! Tale of the tape for the Reds offense: 1 for 15 with RISP, 11 SOs and 9 men left on base!

This team lacks the killer instinct! Needed 6 outs with a 5-2 lead!

  203. RedsMonk65

Very disappointed. Should have won this one. Alas …When are the Reds going to learn how to consistently beat the Cardinals, Brewers and Cubs? A must if they expect to contend for the division.

    • Redlegs1869

Hate to say it, but those clubs have a winning culture top down. Reds haven’t for decades. They don’t know how to win. Does t mean they never “win” obviously, but it’s a poor culture. People can argue it’s not true, but 35 years of failure with numerous rebuilds prove it’s true. The Cardinals, as one example, expect to win. Reds and their fans are always holding their breath and looking over their shoulder, knowing a history of beating these types of teams consistently is non existent.

  204. Jon

Same garbage, different day, same result. Fire Krall. Worst GM in MLB.

  205. Joe

For 30 years – every time this team gives a us tiny bit of hope, they quickly fall apart.

  206. GPod

the ball is hit on a line right at Benson, one hop, you have time to load up and make a throw to the plate….and he uncorks that….a high school outfielder could make a better throw than that…no excuses

    • RedAlert

Hinds would have pegged that runner …

      • Melvin

Would have liked to see him try anyway. He would have had the BEST chance.

  207. Kevin H

One last comment. Today’s game showed me Reds need at least two shut down type bullpen arms. They battled and while the outcome stinks, I will take a game like this over a blow out any day, or even a game like yesterday.

I still believe this team will be there at the end.

  208. CincyDo

Cardinals get Reds number, plain and simple. Crazy game. Reds put up a good fight.

    • Dennis Westrick

First the Brewers, now the Cardinals!

  209. Roger Garrett

Brutal loss and no other way to put it.

  210. Dennis Westrick

Is it just me or does it seem like the same Reds-killers like Arenado or Contreras are the players who come thru in the clutch when the Reds play the Cardinals!

Need Abbott to be great tomorrow and pitch another CG!
