The Cincinnati Reds picked up a win on Tuesday night to open up the series. Tonight they’ll look to beat the Minnesota Twins once again and give themselves a series victory. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET.

Nick Lodolo
It’s been a good season for Nick Lodolo in 2025, but he has had a few hiccups along the way. One of those hiccups came in his last outing when he gave up six runs in 3.1 innings to Cleveland as his ERA jumped up to 3.76 in the outing.
In three of his 14 starts teams have had an entire lineup of right-handed hitters against him. Lefties just aren’t getting many opportunities to face him, but when they do they continue to find success as they’re hitting .346 and getting on base quite often. Right-handed hitters aren’t finding much success against him as they are hitting for a lot average, not getting on base, and have shown moderate at best power.

Bailey Ober
In 2025 Bailey Ober has either been real good, or quite bad. In starts #2-12 this season he posted a 2.43 ERA. But in his 1st start, and his last two starts he’s allowed 20 earned runs in 14.1 innings (12.56 ERA). The last time out he gave up seven runs to Texas while walking six batters and giving up four home runs.
This season the splits against Ober have favored right-handed hitters. They are walking a bit more and hitting for more power. Lefties are walking less, making way more contact, but not hitting for as much power against him.

News and Notes
Jeimer Candelario doubles, homers on rehab
It was a good day for Candelario while on rehab assignment in Louisville. He hit a 402-foot home run and he later had a 2-run double.
Chase Burns with another strong start
In his second start with the Bats since being promoted, the Reds #1 prospect allowed one run in 7.0 innings with no walks and he struck out seven batters. His ERA is now 1.77 through 66.0 innings where he has 13 walks and 89 strikeouts.

Don’t look now, but the Reds are only 1.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
I’m sure that must come as a shock to people who declared the season was over in May.
It’s funny what happens when you have a very good rotation and some bats warming up finally. Just hope Greene comes back sooner than later. Still not sure if the team sees Burns as a stop-gap until Greene returns. Maybe they should?
I read something today that Reds P have 6th best WAR in MLB.
I wonder if the team plans on brining up Burns soon? I don’t understand having him pitch 7 innings in AAA honestly especially if you want to conserve his arm/# of pitches. It would almost seem better to have him go short for awhile in case the team needs his arm down the stretch? Is that crazy? Maybe 🙂
I think it would be cool to have Burns in the pen in Cincinnati. Limit his innings expose him to MLB. Earl Weaver use to do that with young pitchers back in the Orioles glory days
Bob Gibson spent a couple years in the big league BP. Didn’t seem to adversely affect his ability to start and go deep.
So then when the Reds need him, he would only be able to throw about 4 innings. The whole idea is to get these kids prepared to pitch on the big club. NOT BABY THEM.
He just threw 90 pitches and 7 innings. Nobody is babying Chase Burns.
90% chance of rain??? Wonder how that plays into the mix tonight.
I think the worse of the rain is supposed to go through by 10pm or so. Not sure what they plan on doing with the game.
Just looked at the general radar. Looks like a mix and a couple of waves. Of course, it’s the time of year that stuff falls apart before it starts … and vice-versa.
It looked like a slam dunk rainout this morning, but on the radar, it now seems like the worst of it will miss downtown to the north… maybe all of it?… still a decent chance of a delay, there’s some smaller storm cells trailing behind to the southwest. (I think those are called storm cells? The red dots. Big expert here.)
Yeah, what @Mark said.
Pre-game show on and you can see them grooming/prepping the field for play.
Why stop now? True to my plan, I will not watch any of tonight’s game and hope that extends the current win streak to 4 games!
As opposed to last night, let’s score early and often and give Lodolo some run support so he can even his W-L record to 5-5!
We appreciate your sacrifice, Dennis. +250,000 for you.
And the tarp is coming out. Won’t start on time tonight.
Steer in the 4 spot…Stephenson’s getting in a groove, couldn’t find a way to get his bat in the lineup? Hopefully I’ll eat as much crow as I can stomach and Spence has a big game
I just looked at the lineup and thought it was a bit unusual as well. Guess we will see what happens.
Steer 2-2 with a HR and double in first two at bats.
Is it raining at GABP right now?
May not be raining at the moment, but radar has an absolute MESS heading in. Looking like a significant delay that may lead to a subsequent delay. Got to wonder if they pull the plug and make it a DH tomorrow.
Sounds like a plan. All games in Chicago/Detroit area are postponed. Nasty rain and thunderstorms in Midwest. If the game does start, the offense needs to get going early, make sure we don’t fall behind.
If a DH is set for tomorrow Reds will have a problem on Monday because Lodolo is gonna be on short rest vs Yankees so an emergency starter should be used
Mark don’t know how they can play a DH tomorrow! Tomorow’s game is scheduled for a 12:40 start and I assume the Twins are scheduled to fly out of Cincy shortly after the game! I guess they could have an early evening game. Most teams and managers dislike DHs because they are brutal for pitching staffs, especially for unplanned, last minute DHs!
I read the comments about Burns and I flashback to the Rays and David Price. They brought him up for a pennant run and used him late in games. If memory serves, the started the next season (which is what he was doing in Durham before his call up).
I don’t see teams taking that approach anymore, but I wonder why not.
I don’t know, Mark. I don’t think anyone is very certain of things, either.
MLB and the Players’ Association did a study last year on the vast number on pitching injuries.
I can only summarize poorly, but some things they reported were that conservative measures such as pitch counts snd innings limits were an absolute key in preventing pitching injuries in youth baseball.
There were two splinters off of that, however, which were concerns. One was that pitch counts and innings limits, etc. for older adolescents, including college and pro kids, were considered something of a detriment within this group in developing kids’ capacity and/or durability, thus negating any gains in injury prevention made with those same measures. They have to develop overall strength and capacity, and failure in essence heightens risk of injury.
The other thing which you can really see coming a mile away was the degree to which youth and/or prep coaches (and families) didn’t follow health and safety related guidelines. That made me ill, to be honest. I coached boys and girls travel/premier soccer from U8 up to U19. Two things happen. One, you break hearts when the more ambitious families figure out their kid isn’t D1. The other thing was how inconceivable it is to risk a kid’s health. And yet youth/prep coaches do it consistently, in collusion with parents.
Going forward, the inevitable (and perennial) “Further Study Needed” clause was in full effect. This was particularly aimed at a variety of thoughts floating around, including the impact of top level velocity, spin and, in a less well reported area, pitching labs “designing” individual pitches for individual players, matching changes in delivery. Other speculation included whether the pitch clock caused guys to throw before their body recovers sufficiently, as well as whether the ML baseball, with its lower seams and less grip has an impact on injury rates.
Last, my favorite part of this was a chat guy at MLTR absolutely dismissing my question about whether MLB and the MLBP union had considered a study on pitching injuries. They said, “That’d sure be dumb, you dummy. Each team spends millions on the issue and there was not only no need but they’d never agree to sharing information to begin with.” Shortly after came the surprise announcement of the study. Redemption!!
Already have 3 rainouts in baseball today and now 2 delays. Crappy year so far here in NY. It’s been raining for 3 months.
Been one of the rainiest springs I remember in southern Ohio. Hopefully the weather next week will cooperate. Have tickets to the Reds- yanks on Tuesday night.
Nice. Yanks are slumping and Judge has gone cold. Maybe Reds can sweep
Radar check is NOT looking good for baseball tonight. Several bands coming through at a fairly rapid pace. I would expect them to call it before too long.
Frigid cold in April
Brutal rains in May and June
Scorching heat in July and August
Then 1 nice game in september when the reds play the pirates in a meaningless game.
I go to 20 games a year. 15/20 games I wish I was indoors
Time for an indoor stadium imo
Less injuries
More stable attendences
More winning. Justt look at Milwaukee for proof
+10,000
I wish all it took for the Reds to be winners every year would be a move to a covered stadium. 🙂 Remember: There is no way that the city of Cincy or the Kroger family would invest a huge sum of cash into a new staidum.
You’re absolutely correct Jason. I hope we’re able to keep the Reds in Cincinnati playing in GABP!! Tampa Bay Rays are in the process of changing ownership according to reports today. I wonder if they stay in the Tampa St. Pete area or if they relocate to Orlando? Maybe Jacksonville? Nashville, Charlotte, and another team for Montreal perhaps?
I thought CLT from what I understood reading about Tampa is the new ownership group basically has to agree to keep the team in Tampa in order to buy the team.
I’ve never been to Tampa Bay, but can’t understand why MLB would want to keep a team there. It seems like it was never a great idea. I read they are a fairly big TV market so that must be part of the draw. Tampa and the Marlins have been fairly successful on the field overall, but just seems that neither franchise really ever took off as far as fan interest, having a great following, etc.
I hear you on the idea of a retractable roof.
It’s taken me a long time to come around to covered stadiums. And I grew up in Houston going to the Dome.
But that place was so big, sometimes I forgot.
My only current gripe with indoor baseball is that the experience can readily turn into a non-stop media barrage…and any ‘pastoral’ element of Summer baseball…one of it’s real pleasures for me is nearly impossible.
I know I’m being nostalgic and idealistic…and that it’s long gone.
The current GASP has a nice view out to the river. I’ve been to {irates stadium and the skyline view of the city is fantastic.
I wouldn’t hate on a retractable roof for the Reds….but if the owners won’t sign EDLC they won’t pay for one of those.
I haven’t been to Minutemaid / Juicebox / Advil stadium since the Asterisks scandal, and I won’t until the last of the trash can bangers is gone.
It is a nice place to watch a game, but the giant scoreboard, the non-stop PA noise and all the media blasts are a bit too much. Likely worse since I’ve last been there.
The surreal train full of oranges makes the fireworks shooting smokesstacks seem normal. I love those things however weird.
I was at a Reds /Dbacks game in 2021. Did not like that park one bit. Thought it was way too dark. Felt like being in a cave. Not sure what the answer is. But you are right the views in some of the stadiums are nice( San Francisco) looks really nice on TV.
@Ks Yep, with lid on, that stadium is dark.
But please, no more Crawford box stadia like the one here in Houston where a pop up that clears the infield lands in the seats in left field. What a joke of a major league field. Made a bunch of RH pull hitters rich, though.
I think they were trying to come up with a sanitized version of the “Jose Cruz Section” from the Dome.
And shoe-horn some of the funk of Camden Yards or Fenway.
Not like GASP has particularly serious dimensions, though.
I loved going to the Dome, just like I enjoyed going to Riverfront during my memorable Cincinnati sojourn.
But you didn’t have to walk through the world’s biggest parking lot to get to Riverfront.
And the food was a lot better.
Riverfront brats, metts and Hudepohl made me a Reds fan as much as Dave Parker and Mario Soto.
Game time 9:15
Isn’t another front coming through around 10? Yipes.
didn’t look like it on the radar I pulled up.
Kind of looks like that. Then more bands of rain. If they get an hour in based on the radar, they’d be lucky.
The other NL Central teams won’t play today due to rain…Let’s see if Reds will…
Speaking of teams up for sale (above)? Do any of you guys want to fork out ten billion to buy the Lakers?
Melvin?
I’ll have to think about it. 😉
I pick up 51% of the tab. You get 49%. Deal?
Suuuuure. 😉
MLB.tv feed still showing rain delay. Nothing on the Reds FB page.
Anyone have any updates to share?
Game is supposed to begin at 9:15pm ish.
Looks like we’re live at GABP. Squeegees on the warning track. Radar still shows another wave about an hour from now. Thrall saying it’s a light rain at the moment.
That ain’t no way to start. Their only run…
I don’t blame them for wanting to get the game in at all costs, but man alive… it’s gonna be a long night.
WLW audio is way ahead of video feed. So I “heard” the blast before I saw it. Have to listen to Sadak and Larkin 🙁
Good luck with that. lol You can always use the mute button like I did last game. 🙂
Alternative is WLW audio on my laptop and sync it myself.
You’re a genius. I didn’t realize how nice it was to just watch and not listen without all the drama. It’s good to do sometimes for me. 🙂
Traling after first pitch ….Lodolo down the middle against Buxton
So Nick got the shut out and no-no monkey off his back early … that’s a good thing, right?
That’s why I call him First Inning Nick.
All the “extra prep time” for Nick isn’t looking good on him. 11 HBP against 18 all last year.
In only 21 starts.
So he’s actually better in that department this year?
Yeah, but he didn’t hit Harrison Bader.
Nick going heavy on the rosin tonight.
Even I knew a breaking ball was coming. Just couldn’t lay off.
What kind of AB was that for EDLC?
Wake up.
A very undisciplined one … but what do I know?
STEERRR! clean up hitter!!
Steer picks us up with a nice oppo!!
Thank you Steer!
Glad you’re not riding the pine.
Steer battting clean-up against a righty. Go figure.
I guess the skipper knows what he’s doing batting Steer 4th.
Looks like a genius at the moment.
Tito plays by intuition and plays by sense of smell?
Benavides leads him in, and he just does the rest.
Nice reference
JB WV should have some fun with that one…see his comment above 🙂
Other players chip in. It’s a team game. It’s Steer stepping up in that at bat. This game might stop at any time so Reds need to stay ahead on the scoreboard
Steer has been down so long, I forgot what an impact he makes.
Any production is welcome.
He hits the ball hard.
When he hits it.
Let’s see if Lodolo can settle now
For a big guy, Ober doesn’t throw very hard.
Yeah, he’s having a nice little career but he’s pretty much just a guy.
Sitting right on that line and he misses the strike call. Glad it didn’t cost more than 2 pitches.
Nice bounce back 2nd from Nick.
Nice job, Nick.
(It’s almost 7 PM here, and it’s 109°. Send one of those thunderstorms this way, please.)
Raleigh has been having heat indexes in the high 90’s. We’re predicted to be in the 100’s next week with actuals well over 90. The rain hasn’t helped other than watering the flowers and my pepper plants.
115 here tomorrow. I’ll trade you.
I’ll pass. Even though I’ve got a place to stay in Glendale 🙂
I won’t even go down the “dry heat” path …
McLain back to the 2 hole watch is officially on.
The Mendoza Line is in sight!
Today a ground ball single, tomorrow a .300 OBP, tomorrow the world!
MattyMc heating up!!
Lodolo threw a fastball in the middle to Buxton as the first pitch again
Way to stick with that one MattyMc!!
This game may become a battle of the bullpens. Not sure either starter is going to make it past 5 innings. Should be interesting to see who Francona uses.
Especially if we get another delay.
I’d wager Richardson gets some work.
How’s the weather holding up ?
2+ hour delay and it was a light rain at first pitch. Haven’t checked the radar lately, but the earlier prediction had stuff rolling in before long.
Not happy with that AB. Not at all.
Too bad given Steer smoked that one.
Steer showing some more pop ! Dbl with one down.
And Benson brings him home ! Reds up 4-1.
This version of Will Benson is very fun to watch.
Steer delivers
Willy Benson delivers
Just a noisy out for Jose. So close.
Steer has as many extra-base hits tonight as he had in the previous 21 games (78 PA). This has to feel good.
Reds getting big hits from Benson, Fraley, Steer, Mclain last couple nights. Who knows, maybe they all just needed some time, and getting more healthy as well.
Was it close at 2nd ?
It was. Tito didn’t want to burn the challenge. Probably would have been “call stands”.
What is the deal with the Fangraph odds? I understand that Athletic the start of the season, they’re baseball on player projections, but 73 games in, I would think the current season stats would factor in a lot more. Based on Run Differential, the Reds have underachieved so far this year. Weird that Brewers and Cards have such better odds.
Fangraphs never give the the Reds good odds. Every year.
Statistical probabilities mixed with a healthy dose of voodoo … 😉
WARheads underrate a lot of the Reds’ players. Elly De La Cruz, most notably. Abbott with his bad K rate last year. Lodolo’s freaky blisters. Friedl as an all-around hitter. Benson (but everybody underrates him so WAR is off the hook there…)
Lodolo was a little unlucky in this inning, surrendering a run on 3 grounders
Trying to stick it out through the top of the 5th. Slow day for me tomorrow, but still need to shut it down at a reasonable hour.
The Twins aren’t going to just rollover. They only have 3 hits, but now have 2 runs on the board…
No lead is safe with Lodolo on the mound. Need to play add on here
There it is ! I was counting on a hit from Espinal last inning.
They couldn’t move him up … I thought TJ took a couple pitches there that he could have unloaded on.
Golf slice single.
Just checked radar. Looks like about 30 minutes to play before the rain starts back up. And it doesn’t quit until around 1AM. Would love to add on, but getting a quick top of the 5th is even more important.
That catch by a fan is an out in Banana Ball 😀
We’re thru the top half of the 5th. Lodolo got ’em 1-2-3.
Good to see Ty France, and that he’s having a good year… Just not against us !
It’s an official game … bring on the downpour!!!
Exactly !
And now the bottom of the 5th can take as long as it wants.
Tell the Reds that cause well they do what they do always in a hurry.
Or not
I gotta learn to be more specific.
First Wife is on a roll with the “hat game” during breaks. I think she’s at 3 in a row.
I was to tired to focus. I’m dying here.
That didn’t take long … 😐
All Reds with a hit at least excepting Lux and Ely with 0-3 each
Six Reds hitters retired in order by Ober …The Reds offense need to score more runs
That’ll do, Nick. That’ll do just fine.
Let’s stretch out the bottom of the 6th, score some runs, and let it pour for a couple of hours until they call it a game.
Lodolo with a strong 6th, very strong !
His 9th quality start if his night is done.
I thought Larkin might be on a bathroom break.
He spoke his 1st words after the 2nd out (strikeout).
That was it for the inning. 1 sentence.
He’s just hard for me to listen to. And makes it harder for me to listen to Sadak. That’s saying something.
I like his insight on hitting approach.
Not much else.
The strength of our order today is coming up !
There we go ! Trevino with another hit …
Looks like another quick at bat for the Reds.Just checked in last inning but this picture doesn’t appear to have much yet he is now in a groove.
My screen is saying “Rain Delay” with Fraley at the plate ….
Tarp is on now and they are weighting it down. It’s coming down hard and likely to get harder.
And I’m thinking that’s the ballgame.
At least it is for me. I’m at my limit for tonight.
The skies are open.
So does the top of the 6th count statistically if they call it? I’m thinking no?
Nice bounceback for Steer….HR was a Gabp special, but who’s complaining on our side. He’s nimble at 1B, give him that for sure
Good question. They were saying “quality start”. You get a complete game if you go 9 and your team doesn’t bat in the 9th. Have to think it’s a similar situation.
“So does the top of the 6th count statistically if they call it? I’m thinking no?”
Pretty sure you are correct sir. The inning was not finished.
This from my friend Mr. Google. Keep in mind he’s not ALWAYS correct.
Official Game:
.
If the game reaches the required number of innings (5 or 4.5 if the home team is winning), it’s considered an official game. All stats from that point on, including the top of the sixth, are recorded and included in the final results.
So – suspend and resume tomorrow before the regularly scheduled game? Does that get the extra man callup rule for bullpen help?
They won’t suspend it. They’ll call it short. Or they’ll resume play closer to 2AM which I doubt Tito and Rocco would agree to do.
Don’t know about now but used to be if they don’t pick it up later tonight the team ahead wins because it is a complete game after 4 1/2 if the home team is ahead and its a complete game after 5 if they are behind.Could be wrong
They only suspend if the home team trails or tied
I thought it was complete after 5.
It’s officially complete if they call it complete and don’t want to finish it. Five innings would do it as you said.
I believe this visiting team has to complete 5 innings for the game to be considered official. They do not have to play the bottom of the fifth if home team is winning
Typically they would call the game and this would count as a win.
It is a complete game after 5 innings unless the lead changes heads in the top of an inning and the home team does not get its at bat in the bottom of that inning. In this case it is suspended.
Should the game be tied when rain stops play after the official length is passed, that would also be a suspend situation.
Don’t believe the “complete after 5” rule has changed, and thought there was a somewhat newer policy on not playing (i.e resumption) after midnight, but never heard the “suspend if the home team is trailing” rule.
It is only suspended if the score was tied or the home team was in the lead at the start of an inning after the 5th and in the top of the inning the road team takes the lead and the bottom of the inning is not completed.
In days of yore in this situation, the game reverted to its status at the end of the last completed inning after the 5th. This meant a road team trailing at the start of say the 6th inning could take a lead and unless the home team got its 3 outs in the bottom of the inning, the game would roll back, the top of the inning would be erased, and the home team would win! Easy to see why this was changed.
Excellent Jim – I’ll go digging on the after midnight policy (don’t recall if it’s a rule) but this is likely a W for the Reds.No more hours-long, after dark rain delays.
The easiest way to remember is that both teams are entitled to the same number of outs unless the home, and only home, team does not need all all its final 3 outs to win.
Somebody tell poor Dennis, Reds Win another one !
Dennis is taking one for the team. Keep riding the pine, Dennis!
Had Reds Over 3.5 and Detroit RL parlay (rain out). They paid me already which is nice. Wasn’t sure if it didn’t go 9?
9 of 11 and it doesn’t feel like we’re incredibly hot or anything. We’re just better with our starter then their guy
Game is still in rain delay per Reds.com website. Still raining here in Florence about 15 miles south of GABP.
If they do call the game, will Lodolo be credited with a complete game as he was the only pitcher?
Again from my usually reliable friend Mr. Google.
Yes, a pitcher can be credited with a complete game even if the game is shortened, such as due to rain or other factors, as long as they pitched the entire game for their team. The key factor is that no other pitcher on their team entered the game to pitch. If a pitcher completes the game under these circumstances, they will be credited with a complete game.
Mr. Google lies to me at times. He is a bit shady, so watch out. 🙂
I’ll keep that in mind @ Jason Franklin. 🙂 He must have a lot of friends.
If we get the W, we are tied for 2nd place in the Division.
If current results remain, 1/2 games behind the wildcard…
Btw Wynns doing pretty decent in As
Yes. And it will be the first time we’er four over .500 this year if I’m not mistaken.
SF down 4-2 in the 7th. SD down 3-1 in the 5th. If SD loses again we’re .5 game out of the last wildcard….tied with Milw
Orioles closer Felix Bautista. 14 of 15 saves this year and they’re hitting .151 off him.
61 ip last year and he had 110 Ks. He’ll be 30 on Friday so he’s not young and maybe they’d part with him. If Krall cares at all he’d try to add a few pieces that could help and this guy is a monster.
Good idea. We cannot be in pennant race with Ashcraft pitching 7th or 8th inning in a tie game. Santillan, Bautista, and Pegan will be a good trio.
Bautista would be fantastic to have on the team. Probably depends on his contract and what they want in return. They would probably want a starting pitcher as that’s what they need.
I think this one belongs to the Reds! Can’t imagine they’d wait till like 1 am to keep playing again but who knows.
Especially with an early start tomorrow, but we still wait.
It’s a final, 4 over.
We take it. Elly had an off night at the plate but this team is still rolling. Let’s keep it going tomorrow.
It’s official. Reds win this one
Time for Martinez to pick up a win.
Reds win a shortened game. Reds win the series too. They have four series win in a row now…
Huge getting another series win.
Lets go Reds!
