The Cincinnati Reds had a good Saturday as they picked up a walk-off win in extra-innings in the resumed game from Friday night that was suspended by rain after the 6th inning. Then they pummeled the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 in the regularly scheduled game. Today the Reds will go for the sweep and try to get back to the .500 mark on the year. First pitch is scheduled for 1:40pm ET.

Brady Singer

One game has really crushed the ERA of Brady Singer this season. His 7-run, 2.1 inning outing in Houston is responsible for nearly a full run of his ERA this year. In his other 11 starts his ERA this season is 3.82.

The splits for Singer are a bit weird. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a higher average and getting on base at a higher rate, but they aren’t hitting for any power. Lefties aren’t hitting for much average and they aren’t getting on base, but when they do find hits they are hitting for plenty of power.

Zac Gallen

After struggling in the last four starts of May (8.02 ERA), Zac Gallen rebounded well in his first start of June. In Atlanta and facing the Braves he allowed one earned run on four hits and a walk in 7.0 innings with four strikeouts.

The splits are noticeable for Gallen. Left-handed hitters have an advantage in both batting average and on-base percentage, while those extra singles also give them an edge in slugging percentage. Lefties walk more and make more contact. Right-handed hitters aren’t hitting for average, or getting on base, but when they do get hits they are hitting for solid power.

News and Notes

Austin Wynns has been traded

After being designated for assignment this last week, the Reds have traded backup catcher Austin Wynns to the Sacramento Athletics for an undisclosed amount of cash. You can read a bit more about the deal from our piece that was published earlier today.

Chase Burns does it again

Last night saw the Reds top prospect take another step forward in Chattanooga. Burns threw a 7-inning, complete game shutout with no walks and with six strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader. He’s now made eight starts in Double-A and is 6-1 with a 1.29 ERA, just four walks, and he’s struck out 55 in 42.0 innings pitched.

What do you think the timeline is for Chase Burns to be moved to AAA? It clearly seems like AA is no challenge for him.

  2. Melvin

Burns is destined for the Reds this year one way or another eventually. Hard to imagine a better pitcher in the minor leagues.

  3. docproc

Nice to see a lineup without Joe, Hampson, or Espinal. Put Hays in Benson’s spot and that a pretty strong group.

    • CI3J

Unfortunately, Matt McLain and his 57 OPS+ is still there.

      • Jason T.

He should be in AAA. Still think he can turn it around but he needs to do it in AAA. Our offense isn’t consistent enough to carry his lack of offensive output.

  4. Old-school

Get a sweep of the dbacks

Braves in free fall and need those tiebreakers and Reds won series already against giants and dbacks

Time to focus those crosshares on brewers and cards and get to .500

    Cubs are good

Hays should be back soon plus CES adds 2 big bats against lefties

    • CLTRedsFan

Until the Reds start beating the Cardinals and Brewers on a consistent basis it’s not realistic to consider them as a Wild Card contender. It’s time to evict those two teams from inside the brains of the Reds. They’ve been living there rent free for years. That said things seem to be turning around with the return of CES, Hays soon, and later Marte. Add Hinds,an extended stretch of minimal injuries, and continued good pitching, we have a reason to be optimistic from this point on.

  5. wkuchad

I know Trevino has had a good year, but if you’re hitting behind a defense-first backup catcher, your season hasn’t gone as expected.

  6. Jonathan Linn

Trade a SP for OF bat, IMO. Go big at this point. Loosing Hunter Green and ELDC best years

    • Jason T.

I think that’s the Cincinnati mantra. The Bengals are doing a very good job of wasting what they have with Burrow/Chase/Higgins with that “Defense” they run out there.
Sucks to waste talent on the Reds. Hopeful that CES can stay consistent, Marte would be another nice offensive piece if he can come back soon and perform to his talent level. But yes, improving our ability to score runs consistently would be outstanding.

  7. Dennis Westrick

Unfortunately, despite the two wins yesterday, the Reds made up little ground on the four teams ahead of them for the 3rd NL Wild Card spot! The Giants, Cubs and Cards all won their games!

Just need to keep winning! Let’s do so today and sweep those nasty reptiles out of GABP!

  8. Roger Garrett

Nope we don’t need a 24 year old right handed hitting outfielder with power that can also run and throw.Nope we have Joe and Hampson that can play the outfield.Let him stay right there in Louisville.

    • Melvin

That 24 year old just hit a two run homer. 🙂

      • Dennis Westrick

I assume you are referring to Hinds! Yes?

      • Melvin

haha Yes. His next AB he hit a ball off of his leg in the same spot twice going down each time with the trainer out. Then he was called out on strikes. He challenged it and won the challenge for a walk. Tough AB. lol He was taken out of the game for a pinch runner when he reached 2B. Hopefully no breaks.

    • Redsvol

I’m with you RG. Get him up here and give him 300 at bats. Let him take his lumps this year so we know whether he can contribute in 2026. . He can get right field and center field at bats.

    • Richard Fitch

One who also strikes out 50% of the time and walks a paltry 5% of the time. Tell the whole story before you make him out to be CES.

  9. Mark Moore

Time to complete Operations Snake Eradication …

    Let’s make it happen, boyz.

  10. RedsGettingBetter

Was not Austin Hays activated from the IL? Is there any update?

  11. Dennis Westrick

The Brewers also had a walk-off win in their game against the Friars yesterday! Drat!

  12. Noyes

Tough matchup for Singer on paper, with only two righties. Hang in there.

  13. Pharmer85

The DP is so much better this year

  14. Mark Moore

Thomas tracked that one like a dog on a scent.

    • DaveCT

If that was my dog on the scent, the D-back would have run 8 miles over the 40-yard distance.

      The great golden huntress.

  15. LouieDLefty

McClain has been a poor hitter this season but tjat glove is worth 60 points on the batting average.

  16. Roger Garrett

Reds come out hacking which I guessed they would and go down on 6 pitches.Looked like they had good pitches to hit though.Reds will hit Gallen if he continues to be up in the zone as it appeared he was.

    • Roger Garrett

Yes and that has to part of why he still is being given a chance to hit.He can field and run.

  17. LDS

Gallen a six pitch inning? Tito needs to whack those guys on the head and tell them to take their time.

  18. Dennis Westrick

Suarez is killing the Reds in this series!

  19. Noyes

I don’t bet, but I’m taking the over.

  20. Dennis Westrick

Hmmm? Gallen at 6 pitches thru one inning and Singer at 31 pitches thru 2 innings! Any bets on which SP lasts longer?

      • Dennis Westrick

Hope you’re right! Would really like to get a sweep today in a Sunday game before heading to north Ohio!

  21. Melvin

How bout that speed from CES tagging up from 1B?

    • Noyes

Awareness and confidence, too. Never crossed my mind he would go for it.

      • Melvin

He’s a much better all around athlete than many give him credit for.

      • Melvin

Fortunately Espinal is back on the bench as a backup where he should be.

  22. Roger Garrett

Terrible at bat by Fraley.Never made contact and strikes out.

  23. Dennis Westrick

Seriously, the Reds need to consider opening an orphanage for the runners they abandon in scoring position with less than two outs! There would be a waiting list!

  24. Melvin

Good news about Hays probably coming back Tuesday or Wednesday.

  25. Kevin H

D backs pitcher with a good knuckle curve. Bottom fell out on the k to fraley.

  26. Mark Moore

I know it’s just the 3rd inning and only 2 runs, but this feels like a Sunday death by a thousand cuts.

If I stop commenting, it’s probably because I drifted off to a land where we win every game we play.

  27. Dennis Westrick

Well, we need Jobu to “Wake Up Bats”!

    • Mark Moore

      +10,000

He’s probably camping out in Clevland

  28. Mark Moore

I know it’s a hard game at this level, but with the 3rd base position wide open, couldn’t TJ at least try to slap one through?

  29. Dennis Westrick

The Reds pitchers, collectively, have to be some of the worst at fielding their position!

    • Mark Moore

Uh … that was a bullet up the middle that hit his pitching arm.

    • Kevin H

I hope your not talking about the line drive back at Singer that hit him on the throwing arm. That he didnt have time to react too.?

    • Noyes

Martinez is good, Lodolo is hopeless, I don’t really have a sense on any of the others.

  30. Dennis Westrick

The Snakes now have 2 “hits” this inning on balls that never got out of the infield! Incredible!

  31. Mark Moore

We’ll see what sitting does to Singer. Personally, I’d like to see him sit while we bat around and score runs.

  32. Jason T.

Thanks, again, CES! Crushing it and loving it.

    • Tom Mitsoff

He’s looking like a very disciplined hitter … and hitting a good breaking ball at the bottom of the zone for a homer. He has my attention.

      • Tom Mitsoff

Pitchers will start attacking the top of the zone against him, and we’ll see how he handles that.

      • Jason T.

Definitely liking what we’re seeing. True, pitchers will make adjustments. He’s looking better versus some pitches that he would chase prior.
I know he’s stated that this is the best he’s felt physically in the big leagues so that’s huge too.

  33. Noyes

These pitches he’s hitting out… they are not cookies. Those are October homers.

  34. Melvin

Mr. Doubles Trevino hits a HR this time. 🙂

    • Jason T.

He deserves to play and play often. Not only great with the pitching staff but has hit well this year. It’s fantastic to watch.

  35. Bet on red

Any idea on the length of the delay

  36. CincyDo

Once again a timely Hr saves the Reds from danger of losing a rain shortened game. Hope it’s not a long delay. Can’t wait to see CES next AB.

    • Melvin

Meteorologist Jim Day says not long. 😉

  37. Jeremiah

Nice to see Trevino hitting again. Would be nice to get Espinal hitting again too even if just for a few spot starts a week or when he comes in for defense.

Fraley kind of has struggled for a long time consistently now. I think he’s a best as a pinch hit lefty off the bench.

  38. Melvin

SMH Bad base running in a close game.

  39. Jason T.

    Elly…ouch…
    Another nice hit by CES.

    • Melvin

Our fastest guy in scoring position already. SMH

  40. Jeremiah

Will Reds get any big late inning hits today? Seems that will be the key.

    • Dennis Westrick

You got your wish! Hope the Reds can make it count!

  41. Kevin H

Elly got over aggressive on the base paths.

  42. CincyDo

Sick and tired of seeing Elly gets caught stealing 3rd. Missed opportunity.

  43. Noyes

McLain jumping on breaking balls? As the kids say, you love to see it.

  44. Jason T.

Thank you Matt. That was a big blast.

  45. Dennis Westrick

The Snakes gambled by sending their SP back out after the rain delay and Matty Mac makes them pay! Now let’s close it out!

  46. Mark Moore

2-out bomb to chase Gallen. Great job by Fraley getting on ahead of him.

Not counting chickens yet, but the “s-word” is on the table.

    • Dennis Westrick

Like an implement a janitor would use?

  47. Redlegs1869

There we go Matt! Talk about him needing that. He was so overdue. Hope that gets him going.

    • Mark Moore

      +25,000

I believe you noted his glove skills definitely play at the MLB level. I personally think his bat skills will continue to improve. Keep him in the 9-hole and watch him improve.

  48. Old-school

McLain is elite 2b defensively and has speed

Keep him in the 8/9 hole until he heats up but hes a big leaguer

    • Mark Moore

+25,000 I typed almost the exact same thing in response to Richard 😀

  49. Mark Moore

OK, it was foul but CES made a nice grab there 😮

  50. Tom Mitsoff

Excuse me, was that Brooks Robinson?

      • Mark Moore

The “turf” over concrete would have flayed this skin off anyone 😮

      • CLTRedsFan

I was 10 years old and 1970 was my first full season of listening/watching the Reds. I cried after the last out and the Orioles won the World Series. After 55 years it’s still painful to remember Robinson robbing us of base hit after base hit.

  51. Dennis Westrick

I say ride that horse and send Rogers out to start the 9th!

  52. Jeremiah

It’s about time there for Mclain! Big hit. Reds whooping the Dbacks this weekend overall.

  53. Mark Moore

Let’s put some mustard on this one and finish it off.

  54. Mark Moore

Melvin, just in case you are monitoring the thread …

Change in dinner plans. Thought it was going to rain, but that’s pushed way off. Going to make some cheesesteak on the flat-top for dinner 😀

    • Melvin

Since your wife is gone you can send me the extras. 😉

      • Mark Moore

I wish. It’s a 14 oz package so I’ll have to split it in half and freeze some. She wouldn’t eat it anyway.

  55. RedsMonk65

Reds sweep snakes out of the house!

  56. Dennis Westrick

I miss old timey baseball when a player, especially a former player like Suarez, hits another HR in a series he would get some “chin music” his next at bat!

    • CenTexRed

You want the Diamondbacks throwing at CES?

  57. Mark Moore

    Well, well, well …

CES had himself quite the day all the way around. Fitting he finishes it off.

    • Mark Moore

      Project Snake Eradication complete!!

      • Dennis Westrick

But Mark, I hear that snakes are great on the grill!

    • Melvin

That was Espinal. I wish CES could have stayed in to finish it. Perhaps as time goes on Tito will have confidence in his defense.

  58. Dennis Westrick

Big Tony finishes the job and banishes the snakes from GABP!

  59. Jeremiah

Take out the Cubs series and the Reds bullpen seems like a top 5 pen in MLB. No one really stands out overall as lights out all the time but they just consistently get the job done.

  60. CincyDo

Finally able to finish the work and back to .500. Fun series

  61. Dennis Westrick

Back at .500 and headed to Cleveland! Any news on Greene’s status/availability?

    • Indy Red Man

Jim Day said it won’t just be 1 start this time. He had back pain too

  62. Kevin H

Anyone know the reds rotation for the Cleveland series? Since they changed the reds website I cant scroll to see who the starters are.

    • Melvin

You don’t want to know who’s starting tomorrow.

    • Mark Moore

      Miley, Abbott, Lodolo.

The websites are now officially a hot mess. If you have the phone MLB app, you can at least find the view that shows you projected starters.

      • Jeremiah

Yes the change to reds mlb site is annoying I think.

    • Jeremiah

I think they should have a bullpen game tomorrow. Bring Miley in the 3rd inning or so. Feel like the Guardians might crush him if they can prepare for him to start the game! Maybe try to keep the Guardians guessing a bit with a bullpen game I think gives Miley a better chance to be effective.

      • CI3J

Based on what we saw, it doesn’t matter when you bring Miley in. He’s going to serve up big, fat meatballs that are going to get clobbered.

It’s embarrassing that he’s pitching for the Reds at all. He couldn’t even get Single-A hitters out during his rehab.

  63. Optimist

Finally, a sweep against a fairly good team, with some late inning action and good relief work. May buy a few days more for Hays, and keep the trend going.

  64. LDS

I do wish CES could work out his problems though. All these HRs are just not the Reds way. Get Hays back, call up Hinds, and dump Joe and Hampson and go for it. Doesn’t cost much of anything to find out.

    • David

      @LDS.

The timing! The timing! CES had to get his timing back.
I think the last couple of HR’s he hit were not even strikes.

  65. Jermeia

Reds send the defeated Snakes back on a plane to wherever they are headed next!

  66. David

And…this one belongs to the Reds!

Funny what a little bit of offense can do for a team.

    Look our Cleveland!

  67. DaveCT

Just getting caught up (thank you MLB.com for keeping my broadcast in “rain delay” until the 9th inning).

CES’s 4th plate appearance, the groundout to Geno. The ump called a 2nd strike well off the outside corner.

The pitcher then threw the same pitch again, another ball, I assume trying to get CES to chase.

So CES had to protect — which he did, and very well. Of note: He fouled off a little chip shot away, instead of trying to get a hit.

It may seem like a small thing but for CES it is not. It’s a very positive adjustment, one that was really necessary.

Insert the standard ‘It’s a great start but we’re not outta the woods yet blah, blah, blah.’ But this is good.

Congrats to CES for the offseason fitness work, for weathering his injury, and for going to AAA and doing the work.

    Credit where credit is due.

  68. Ozzie

I have believed all year MM is the key to our offense. Once he starts to play to his potential consistently, the Reds will then win a a long string of series.

It’s funny one hot hitter can turn around an offense. CES raking allows others to relax and pay loose. The result is they play better. Hays has also had that effect this year when he’s been in the lineup. I think MM will also, once he turns out on.

    • CI3J

I’m still skeptical about McLain suddenly “turning it on”. He’s had a few good games here and there throughout the year (with today being one of them), but the majority of the time, he’s a black hole in the lineup.

Believe me, I’m rooting for 2023 McLain to show up, but I just don’t see any reason to believe it will happen. If McLain can start stringing together a few good performances, then maybe I’ll start to get my hopes up. We could definitely use him.

I still think he needs a few weeks in AAA in order to get right.

      We’ll see what happens.

  69. Roger Garrett

Pen was lights out today and the whole series and CES has made an immediate impact.Power plays and today 3 homers and 4 runs on 6 hits.Tiger velocity back up around 96 /97 and he says here hit it but he was not down the middle and the Reds win.Rogers with his best outing and covers 2 innings and Barlowe continues to just get outs.CES just has awesome power and the homer he hit was like a wrist shot on a line that just kept going.MM continues to battle and he has missed some pitches but he didn’t miss that one in the 7th.Hope Hayes gets back soon and Candy and Marte in a few weeks.Suddenly the lineup gets deeper and whar not to love about Trevino
