Last night saw the Cincinnati Reds tie the game up in the bottom of the 6th inning in a steady rain and then saw the inning end, the tarp pulled, and about 30 minutes later the game suspended. This afternoon the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds will get back on the field at 2:10pm ET to resume that game, beginning with the 7th inning, and then they will play the regularly scheduled game about 40 minutes after the completion of Friday’s game or at 4:10pm ET – whichever comes latest.
Given that there won’t be “starting pitchers” for the resumed game, there isn’t going to be much of a preview for this one. Here is the Gameday link for the game if you wanted to check the lineups and see how things played out.
Where we are:
The game is tied up at 3-3.
Eugenio Suarez will be the first batter of the game when it resumes to begin the 7th inning. Nick Lodolo completed all six innings for the Reds, so Cincinnati will have a full and rested bullpen where no one has pitched since at least Wednesday.
The Reds lineup for their half of the 7th inning will be the very top of their lineup with TJ Friedl set to lead off. The looming question for Cincinnati will be if they put Elly De La Cruz into the game when it resumes after he was out of the lineup last night.

While the game last night was on Apple TV+, the resumption of the game will not be. You will be able to watch the 7th inning on for game one and all of the regularly scheduled game on FanDuel Sports Ohio.

Nick Martinez
After a bit of a slow start to the season, Nick Martinez had turned things around over his final two starts of April and five starts in May. But in his first start of June he struggled, giving up five runs in 4.2 innings against the Cubs.
The splits are pretty big for Martinez so far this season. He’s found plenty of success right-handed hitters, holding them to a low average, keeping them off of the bases, and limiting them in the power department. Lefties have hit for a good average and they’ve shown a good amount of power against him, too.

Ryne Nelson
This season has seen Arizona use Ryne Nelson in a multi-inning relief role for the most part, though he has made three starts this season. On April 18th he gave up five runs in 0.2 innings against the Cubs. Since then he’s been very good, posting a 1.72 ERA in 31.1 innings. In his last three games he’s thrown 15.2 innings and allowed just one run and one walk.
The splits for Nelson aren’t that big. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a higher average, though it’s still a low average. They don’t have an advantage over lefties in on-base percentage or slugging.

Joe La Sorsa is the 27th man today
Today’s situation qualifies as a doubleheader, which means the two clubs get a 27th man for the day. Reliever Joe La Sorsa will be that guy for the Reds. In 20.2 innings with Louisville this year he has a 3.92 ERA and 14 walks to go with 14 strikeouts.
Hot Prospects
The Reds top position prospect has been on a different level over the last four weeks. 19-year-old catcher Alfredo Duno has an OPS of 1.120 with Daytona in his last 99 plate appearances in a league where the average OPS is just .691. He’s not the only hitter swinging a hot bat on the farm right now and we looked at a few of them and some draft information over at RedsMinorLeagues.com this morning.

Last year, Danny Jansen was the catcher for the Blue jays and played in a game against the Red Sox in June. That game was suspended due to rain and resumed in August. Jansen was traded from the Blue Jays to the Red Sox and finished the same game playing for the Red Sox. First player in MLB history to play for both teams in the same game.

There could be tough times ahead for Steer. He isn’t the guy he was in 2023 (let’s not forget he was 6th in RoY that season). With the chronic shoulder issue, he may never again be that guy, which is sad but part of the business.

CES had back problems coming out of Spring Training in 2023, after he had a “phenomenal!” Spring training that year. “Needs more time at AAA”, per the Reds Brain Trust.
His hand injuries sidelined him last year.

Dodgers 14 pitchers on the IL now. Good market for Nick Martinez, Pagan, Gibaut, Rogers, etc if we end up sellers. I think Pagan will be 35, but he’s the one guy I’d like to keep.
I did take a brief nap and tuned in just before the game started. Had it on radio on my phone while I was outside grilling my burgers and drinking down that Killian’s Red I rescued from the fridge.
All settled in now. That 5 runs was fun, but things have settled in a bit. Good to see Benson taking the BB and Fraley shooting one up the middle. And the CES rainbow was a treat.

Dbacks and Braves are toast. Dbacks have $72 million invested in Jordan Montgomery ( out with Tommy John) Corbin Burns( out with Tommy John) and Eduardo Rodriguez( bad signing) just this year. They arent competing. Braves are 28-35 and Spencer Strider is 0-4 throwing 95 mph instead of 100 mph with ERA approaching 6 after a Tommy John and modified 2nd surgery. Reds need to get a good reliever( nats Finnegan ) and trade for Geno Suarez and go after the Brewers and Cards and Giants. Dont give up!

I’m not quite as enthusiastic about McLain, but don’t send him down. I completely agree with using the 8-9 spots in the lineup for slumping/recovering but proven MLB players. McLain is just barely there as proven, and Benson does very well at the bottom of the order.

Hit a Hr & 5 rbis today. He’ll be 28 in October so still in his prime. 32 at-bats in Gabp w/5 doubles, 2 HRs, and 5 walks (1.020 ops). He might go off in Gabp full-time. I like Benson, but Sanchez is much scarier to the opposition imo. Neither one can hit lefties though

Larkin has gone MIA in the booth. Lol Sadak trying to get him involved and ask him basically a Question and nothing.
Larkin belongs in the coaching realm in some capacity. He gets bored in the booth. Sakak is almost tolerable with Brantley in there with him.
Looks like it’s going to be transactions week ahead – everybody gets to play in the blowout, and lots of moves coming.
WLW booth just summed up the scores as a “Bench” and a “Morgan” … sounds about right.
Commenting gets a little slow on a day like this, but I know we’re all happy with the result.

After series losses to the Cubs and Brewers, all the talk on Thursday sounded like the Reds were finished for the season… Now it appears like there’s new life, and more hitters on the way. It’s going to be an up and down season. Too soon to make the call that the Reds are now suddenly contenders, but this series helps in that direction.
I still have doubts about October ball, but these past two games had excellent starting pitching and the offense showed up … big time today.
At least we have a lineup now that gives us hope that we can possibly go on a run especially with Hays coming back. No Espinal, Hampson, or Joe. It would be nice to get Hays back tomorrow.

Noticed that as well to Grichuk – that makes for a 10 year bullpen career.
Coming into today, the Reds had a +24 run differential, which is better than 5 of the 12 teams currently in a playoff spot across MLB.
That is going to go up to somewhere around +36 run differential after this game.
CES back and healthy. Hays will be back soon. Marte will be back eventually. McLain will turn it around at some point.
To the Gordon Wittenmeyers of the world who say “SELL SELL SELL” – lighten up. This team has the dogs to get it done, just need help in the bullpen at the deadline. Sell to get… what? Once all our guys are healthy, there will be a logjam. Hays and Frield will take up two OF spots. That leaves Lux, Steer, CES, Espinal, Fraley, Benson, and eventually Marte (not even mentioning Candelario) all clamoring for time. And Stephenson needs more playing time, so he will be at DH a lot.
I wouldn’t be opposed to flipping Singer for a reliever, because we have Burns tearing it up. Or Candy for… candy. But don’t blow it up. It’s just getting fun.
Not saying they’ll make the playoffs guaranteed, but Tito will have this team in contention till the end. I’d much rather watch that than wave the white flag in defeat.
