Brady Singer

After a strong first month with the Reds where he made six starts and had a 3.24 ERA, Brady Singer has struggled so far in May as he’s allowed 19 hits, walked six batters, and had just seven strikeouts in 13.1 innings while posting an ERA of 9.45. He’s allowed a home run in seven consecutive starts.

The splits for Singer this season aren’t big when it comes to average or on-base percentage. But left-handed hitters are responsible for six of the seven home runs hit against him this season and it’s given them a big advantage in slugging percentage. Not shown below are his home/road splits where hitters are crushing him on the road (.341/.367/.565) and his ERA is 7.45 in four starts.

Andrew Heaney

Consistency hasn’t been there for Andrew Heaney this season. In his first five starts he walked six batters and had 31 strikeouts in 31.1 innings with a 1.72 ERA. In the four starts since he’s walked 13 batters with just seven strikeouts in 19.1 innings and a 5.12 ERA.

The platoon splits against Heaney are not what you would expect to see. Left-handed hitters don’t face him much, but the ones who do have found plenty of success against him – hitting for a good average and plenty of power. Right-handed hitters haven’t hit for average or power, but are walking often and making plenty of contact. His splits over the previous four years were mostly negligible.

News and Notes

Ian Gibaut is back, Chase Petty is out

The Reds activated Ian Gibaut this morning and optioned Chase Petty to Triple-A. Gibaut has missed the last four-ish weeks while dealing with shoulder impingement. You can read more details on the players here from our piece earlier in the morning when the move was announced.

Sam Moll optioned to Louisville

An hour prior to the game the Reds made another roster move. Sam Moll, who had been on the injured list and rehabbing in Triple-A for the last month, was activated and then optioned to Louisville. The lefty had an ERA of 6.52 and a 1.97 WHIP in his 10 rehab outings with the Bats.

I’m not sure today’s matchup is particularly favorable to the Reds. A lefty with reverse splits sounds challenging. It’s time for Singer to get back to what was expected. His last few games have been abysmal. Regardless, the Reds need to win the series and get ready for the Cubs. The season could take a massive hit if they don’t take the Cubs series.

    • Old Big Ed

Heaney didn’t really have reverse splits in the prior 2 years, so I am chalking the splits up this season to small sample size. He’s 33 and pretty much a soft-tossing lefty these days.

He’s been shaky lately. His last four starts have covered only 19.1 innings, and he’s given up 21 hits, 13 BBs and 11 ERs. That certainly doesn’t preclude him from beating the Reds 1-0, but Austin Hays has hit him well and Elly has a HR in 3 ABs against him. They need to get into the Pirates’ bullpen by the 5th.

    • Melvin

The Cubs just activated a couple of days ago one of our favorite players in Mr. Happ.

  2. CincyDo

Every year every team has a good luck charm pitcher. Singer is looking like Reds good luck charm, spotting a 5-2 record with an above 5 ERA. He’s got good offense support every time he pitched? Hope that trend continue today. Let’s get a dub.

  3. RedsGettingBetter

Question: Could the Reds hit and score today?

  4. LarkinPhillips

There is some abysmal stat out there about how bad the Reds have been in rubber match games the past couple of years. Something like 4-26 or something. Hopefully today turns that around!

  5. Kevin H

According to Gordon Wittenmyer the reds record of 25-25 is their best through 50 games start since the last full season playoff off season of 2013..

    Interesting, or sad lol

    • Melvin

Have to look at the big picture I guess. It would seem we hit rock bottom when we were 20-24 after having losing two in a row against the White Sox at home. Now we’re 25-25.

  6. Tom Diesman

The Reds need to score early and often, don’t leave it for later in the game. Rain is forecasted in Pittsburgh for 3:00 PM.

  7. RedsGettingBetter

    Easy inning by Heany… Isn’t encouraging…

  8. Mark Moore

Well THAT’s and ugly way to start the bottom of the 1st … 😐

  9. JB

I said the last game of the Cleveland series, will the Reds go to Pittsburgh and play down to their competition?

  10. Roger Garrett

Another lefty and its 3 up and 3 down very quickly.Reds just have no plan at the plate.Elly looks at 91 and fouls 90 right down the middle then grounds out on a low slider.Friedl competed Espy swung at a pitch outside and fans.No plan at all.None.Now lets hope they turn it around.Hinds in so maybe he runs in to one with a couple on.

  11. RedsGettingBetter

The ump is not helping at all missing pitches

    • Roger Garrett

Hinds just has to be given a chance and a good chance. He can run and throw and has awesome power. He just has to show it in every way but the truth is he goes down when the boys get healthy. He may have to walk on water to stick cause his fate is already decided.

  12. Roger Garrett

Bucs can hit 90 and we can’t and they take walks and we don’t and they are just an awful team with no where near the talent the Reds have and well.

    • JB

Situational baseball. Bunting ,stealing, moving the runners up, hitting behind the runners, running the bases, hitting cut off man , taking pitches, etc . There is more to winning the game than just swinging hard and hoping for the best. When the Reds win they go oppo and do all the little things. Yesterday was a prime example of not doing the little things.

  13. Melvin

When is the last time you saw ANY Reds outfielder throw out ANY runner? Not too often.

    • JB

That is why Hinds needs to be given a shot. They don’t have strong arms out there. Friedl has the worst arm . Hinds and Benson need to be given opportunity the chance because they are the power guys they need. Not Joe or Farley. Hayes,Friedl,Benson and Hinds need to play.

    • greenmtred

They’ve had 37 outfield assists this season, Melvin.

  14. RedsGettingBetter

Hinds picking up Singer…Only 1 run seems cheap

  15. Magi210

Great throw by Hinds and tag by Stephenson.

  16. Dennis Westrick

A DP the hard way and Singer escapes with only one run allowed! It’s tme for the Reds offense to wake up and make sure Heaney is not in the running for the 2025 Cy Young award!

  17. Dennis Westrick

Just checked today’s batting lineup for the Reds in the box score. We have THREE batters in today’s lineup hitting below .200! Yikes! And we wonder why this team struggles to score runs!

  18. Kevin H

Positive thinking is hard at times watching this team.

    • JB

I agree. I try like heck but man they aren’t the most disciplined or fundamental team.

      • Roger Garrett

Yes and If that changes a little this year and the roster changes next year maybe just maybe they get there cause they have some talent.

      • Kevin H

Have they improved yes, however they still do the same thing. Big Elly fan, however I feel a day off would help him reset perhaps

  19. Roger Garrett

Great at bat and I mean great at bat by Steer even if he makes an out to see 11 pitches is well great but he singled.Hope others are watching.

    • JB

Yeah I don’t know why somebody was questioning him yesterday. Brings solid defense as well at first.

  20. Kevin H

I tell ya, Brantley is just a wealth of knowledge

  21. JB

That was a strike to Cruz . It just looked bad because of the way Stephenson caught it. It hit the corner. Surprised the ump gave it to him.

  22. Magi210

Awful third strike on Oneill theee.

  23. Dennis Westrick

Singer appears to be nibbling! Thus the two walks and high (42) pitch count after only two innings!

  24. Kevin H

Reds more patient at the plate this game. Heaney up to 68 pitches with steer at the plate.

  25. CincyDo

It comes down to Hays and he delivered the elusive run. We need one more bat to complement Hays.

  26. JB

Reds tie it up and Singer comes out and walks the first batter. Good lord.

  27. Dennis Westrick

If you owned a duck farm and needed to hire someone to watch over them, then you would hire the Reds hitters! Why? Because they leave more “ducks on the pond” than any group of humans I know!

Yes, I know we finally scored a run!

    • Kevin H

That was pretty good. I laughed… LOL

  28. Dennis Westrick

Can’t let it go without saying! Singer – 3 walks in three innings, 59 pitches and will probably only go five innings on a day where our bullpen could use some rest!

  29. GPod

McClain is a shell of himself from 2 seasons ago

    • CenTexRed

      McLain’s K rate is at 33%.

      Not good.

      OPS lower than Espinal’s.

  30. Dennis Westrick

Some Reds hitters’ batting averages look like my stock porfolio – going down!

  31. Kevin H

Singer battling today. Not his best stuff.

    • JB

Singer just sitting in the dynamite shack smoking a huge Cuban cigar and just begging for trouble.

  32. LDS

Singer is starting to look like a less than great trade. He’s doing the every other year thing as he has for his career. The Reds are getting an off year.

    • docmike

Jonathan India and is .636 OPS says hi.

  33. JB

Henry Davis and his .187 career batting average with the line drive hit. Singers days as a starting pitcher are numbered.

  34. Jason T.

    Hinds saved some runs.

This offense and its Jekyll and Hyde act is super frustrating.

  35. Tom Diesman

They got Singer through the 4th with 86 pitches. Probably safe to say he’s done for the day.

  36. Brian Rutherford

If I were on the team I would have to wonder what you have to do to get the same long leash as some others. We watch McClain, Steer, Stephenson and others strike out and struggle but are in there almost every day.

You are player of the week in the NL and are left on the bench. You are hitting close to .300 and have been one of the most consistent hitters for the team all year and have been left on the bench.

As a fan I don’t get it. As a member of the team I would be wondering what else do I have to do to get the same opportunities?

    • JB

Steer has a 10 game hitting streak at a .333 batting average.

      • Brian Rutherford

He has 35 hits in 163 ab. He hit .225 last year. I have nothing against him but between last season and this season he hasn’t showed he is someone that we are just waiting to turn it around.

Respectfully disagree. Small sample size doesn’t change the recent results.

      • Tom Diesman

I believe you are incorrect on Steer. He’s been a better than MLB Avg hitter over the last month after his on the job spring training first half of April.

      • JB

Lol so you don’t want to use a small sample size for Steer but you want to use a small sample size for Trevino who litterally hasn’t done anything hitting wise his whole career except his last 2 months. Gotcha

    • Tom Diesman

In Benson’s case, he has to learn to hit LHs.

      • Brian Rutherford

Why is McClain getting unlimited opportunities and Benson isn’t? Why isn’t Gavin Lux?

      • JB

Benson and Lux are getting playing time against righties. Neither can hit lefties. McLain is playing probably because of his defense and nobody else can play 2nd besides Espinal who is playing 3rd every day. Lux is not an everyday 3rd baseman or 2nd baseman. Until Marte or Candy comes back it is what it is.

      • greenmtred

Brantley says it’s because they know that McLain will be a cornerstone of the team and he’ll only get out of this by playing.

  37. Dennis Westrick

Singer has now walked 4 batters in 4 innings! Luckily, only one of those batters he walked has scored!

Don’t know about the rest of you but I was excited when the Reds acquired Singer and was hoping for much better based upon his career stats!

  38. Tom Diesman

Wow, look at Francona letting a SP get stretched out to 100 P. Seems like it’s been a rarity this season.

  39. Dennis Westrick

Need a low-pitch, 1-2-3 fifth inning from Singer like a baby needs a mother!

  40. Magi210

Singer living a charmed life on the mound. Nice catch.

  41. GPod

we complain about our pitching, but most of the time, they give us a chance to win night in and night out….but the hitting is the real problem with this team…it is so difficult for this team to string hits together.

  42. Kevin H

I wonder Singer being back out for the 5th is a direct result of a over worked bullpen

  43. JB

Ok I’m good with bringing in the bullpen next inning.

  44. Dennis Westrick

Singer gutted out 5 innings and kept his team in the game! That’s all you can ask of your starting pitcher!

It’s now time for this anemic Reds offense to get a blood transfusion and score some runs!

    • Kevin H

U r on a roll this afternoon!!! Hahaha

      • Dennis Westrick

        Took my Geritol this morning!

  45. Tom Diesman

Today is the 4th time in 51 G this season that a Reds SP has reached the 100 pitches in a game started. Twice for Singer and twice for Greene.

  46. Kevin H

Took a good throw to get Steer at the plate. Took a chance.

  47. RedsGettingBetter

It’s impossible definitely to score in these stretches…the things go in wrong way

  48. LDS

Reds offense needs to wake up or the factoid Doug posted a week or so ago will be extended – like 30+ consecutive series where the Reds won the first game but lost the series. That’s mental not physical/talent.

    • DW

It was actually 36 straight series that they lost the opener and didn’t win the series…so doesn’t apply to this series. There is a terribly bad number for their record in rubber match games, too, but I can’t remember it.

This offense is so hard to endure though.

      • LDS

Thanks, I guess I got it backwards, but futility is futility.

      • DW

        And futility it is!

The only reason I knew is because I stated it incorrectly to someone recently and had to look it up.

  49. Votto4life

This team is hard to watch at times. The offense is so anemic.

    • Jason T.

8 times we’ve been shutout in 50 games or 16% of the games they’ve played is crazy. Really hard to watch at times. Sad because the pitching a majority of the time has done their job.

      • Votto4life

I’m agree the pitching has kept us in most games. If we had just a decent offense we would be right there with the Cubs. But, you can’t lose series to the White Sox and Pirates and expect to stay in contention.

      • GPod

being shutout 8 times before memorial day is just a total joke

      • JohnnySofa

In addition to the shutous, how many times have the Reds scored 1 run?

  50. JB

I feel more comfortable with Gibaut than Rogers. Rogers and Barlow don’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

    • Dennis Westrick

Rogers and Gibaut both make me as nervous as a blind, long-tailed cat at a Rocking Chair convention!

  51. GPod

really getting tired of watching McLains weak AB’s

  52. JB

The Reds have played 15 series so far. They are 5-9-1. It’s amazing they are 25-25. They have beaten S.F,Pitt,Col,Balt and Cleveland. 3 terrible teams and 2 decent teams. If Milwaukee wins today then the Reds play 39 games in a row against .500 or above teams. Not looking good.

  53. JB

Why do the Reds always get somebody on after 2 outs.

  54. Mark A Verticchio

The Mclain issue is getting worse everyday, he basically is an automatic out. If the rest of the team was hitting I think you could be patient with him, but they are not.

    • Brian Rutherford

I have been told he a future cornerstone of the team so we need to be patient.

    • GPod

automatic out is exactly what i was thinking as he walks to the plate…..not even competitive AB’s…..if it wasn’t for his defense….he would not be on the roster

    • LDS

I just looked it up. He’s actually hitting about 40 pts higher in May than April, still less than .200 but better. Not taking that contract extension is starting to look like a bad move on McLain’s part. Stephenson isn’t doing well either. Maybe they both need more time on the IL or some time in Louisville. Regardless, neither are living up to expectations.

      • GPod

I think jis decision not to accept the extention is actually adding to his problems at the plate….I tend to believe that decision is weighing on his mind and making him press even more

    • Tom Diesman

You can become an automatic out in 4 G?

      From 4/30 – 5/17 McLain had a 17 G reached base streak with a .356 OBP.

So he’s had a few bad games since, he’ll come out of it.

  55. RedsGettingBetter

it seems nothing is working offensively

  56. Mark A Verticchio

Why in the world was Benson running would have been a 3-0 count on Friedl.

  57. Frogem

Thrown out stealing 2nd when you have Friedl with a 2-0 count. Shaking my head.

  58. Kevin H

Benson trying to make something happen. Didn’t workout.

  59. JohnnySofa

Hmm. How could this be happening to the offense after the addition of Connor Joe to the lineup … how?

    • JB

Joe is 7-20 .350 average since joining the Reds. Can’t really blame him.

  60. RedsGettingBetter

Elly hitting from the right side has been poor…

  61. Kevin H

Well so much for me not getting frustrated. Stopped watching and on to big bang theory reruns lol

    • Dennis Westrick

Funny you should day that! Reruns of the Big Bang Theory is my go-to when any of my sports teams is performing poorly! That includes the Reds, the Bungles and Notre Dame!

  62. Mark A Verticchio

To be honest it looks like these hitters are tight as heck or they have just given up on themselves. They very rarely even make hard contact.

  63. greenmtred

Question: Would any team offer Elly a billion dollar contract right now? Should the Reds try to lock him up long-term (for less than a billion, obviously).

  64. Votto4life

I’m not nearly as high on Elly than I have been in the past. It’s probably a good thing the Reds haven’t sign him for a gazillion dollars.

  65. Indy Red Man

77 wins for Bell last year. This team has young guys progressing in theory and added Hays. Problem is they’re no better. I see about 74-78 wins because we can’t hit and Francona is less aggressive.

  66. Mark Moore

That pretty much seals it. I’m at Clete. Disappointing given how we battled back in Game 1. Doesn’t bode well for playing the Stupid Cubs.

  67. greenmtred

I’d clete if it were earlier in the game, plus there’s a sort of sick fascination in watching. Kind of like picking a scab.

  68. Dennis Westrick

That 3rd Pirate run is probably the coup de gras! Six games behind the Stupid Cubs when the meet at GABP on Friday!

  69. Jeremiah

Boy as soon as you start getting excited about the Reds then it looks like losing 2 out of 3 to the Pirates! That would be series losses to Pirates and White Sox in one week.

I hope it’s not true but the Red mainly may have been a beneficiary if Will Benson being awesome for 5 days instead of them turning the corner overall. But maybe this team will just be like this all year up and down.

  70. Kevin H

Well only thing I will say is seems like Reds play well against better teams. 3-3 vs Giants and 3-0 vs Cleveland. That’s all I got. Lol

    • Dennis Westrick

Maybe the Reds should stop playing the weaker teams! Because of the dumpster fire the Reds left burning in Pittsburg, the series against the Cubs gains in importance and may determine how the rest of the season goes! Win 2 of 3 or sweep and maybe the Reds stay close to a NL Wild Card. Get swept by the Cubs and suddenly they are 8 games back with little or no hope of catching the Cubs for a magical NL Central winner!

  71. JB

So some seem to think it’s McLain and Steer who are hurting the team. Steer is 18-69 .260 average for May going into today.
    McLain is 13-66 .196
    ELLY Is 14-74. .189.
Seems like your anger should be directed towards Elly.
    Elly is not Bobby Witt.

    • Kevin H

True but Mclain isn’t any better at the moment. Kinda cherry picking JB.

      • JB

I’m not cherry picking. I’m saying everybody is blaming McLain and Steer and Elly gets a free pass. Elly is doing worse than those 2 .

      • Brian Rutherford

Elly leads the team in hits, hr, rbi, sb, is second in doubles. He clearly is the main issue. He has been struggling in May but to compare he and McClain isn’t even a race. Respectfully disagree

      • GPod

I think they are all to blame….I can’t think of 1 player on this team (offensive) that you could say is really having a steller season so far

      • JB

Elly is suppose to be the next billion dollar guy. Comparing him to Bobby Witt. Guys like that should be carrying the team. I just checked 10 shortstops and all 10 are ahead of Elly in WAR. Witt,Abrams,Pena,Seager,Crawford,Swanson, ……. Elly should be getting a lot of blame

      • Kevin H

Fair to say to say we are all frustrated. All I am saying JB is Mclain is not much better at the moment than Elly. Both have not done what we expected. I am more frustrated with Stephenson and the sitting of Lux and Benson. Than Mclain and Elly at the moment.

      • JB

McLain isnt better than Elly. I never said that. You said it. I’m saying is Elly isn’t getting any blame. Elly leads a terrible offense in hitting categories. Big deal. Guys like Witt and Trout carry their teams. Elly isn’t. McLain and Steer aren’t getting compared to great players. Elly is. It’s the price of being good. He isn’t carrying his team right now.

      • JB

I agree with you all on McLain and Stephenson. But let’s not just blame them. Elly stinks right now as well.

      • Votto4life

I agree with Gpod there is plenty of blame to go around.

There isn’t really one guy that I find myself rooting for to hit. Not one guy in which I think “if only we can get to his spot in the line up”. Austin Hayes was that guy for a stretch, early in the season, but no longer.

I am at the point where I just dread seeing McLain, Stephenson or Steer stepping into the batter’s box.

      • Kevin H

I understand what you are saying. Elly isn’t carrying the team and more people are upset with Mclain and Steer. All I was saying is right now they are both struggling.

      • Dan

Stats IN MAY for various Reds (not counting today’s game):

        –Espinal – .233/.282/.274 (.556 OPS), 10 K, 78 PA (12.8% K rate)
        –Stephenson – .173/.271/.288 (.559 OPS), 23 K, 59 PA (39.0% K rate)
        –De La Cruz – .189/.268/.365 (.623 OPS), 25 K, 82 PA (30.5% K rate)
        –McLain – .197/.316/.318 (.634 OPS), 26 K, 80 PA (32.5% K rate)
        –Steer – .261/.311/.420 (.731 OPS), 20 K, 74 PA (27.0% K rate)

Steer looks decent (about average) in May… the others, quite grim.

Some really alarming K rates too, led by, surprisingly, Stephenson.

      • JB

Dan- agree. At one time I think Stephenson struck out 17 times in 34 at bats or something like that. 1 out of every 2 at bats. That’s not good. There was no reason to bring him up from AAA until he was ready and hitting.

    • Jeremiah

Ive probably been a little tough on Steer and hemay be coming out of it but when is the last big hit he had, like a HR, driving in runs, big hit in a tight spot?

I think the bigger issue is the duo of Steer and Stephenson basically playing at spring training level for a month, and then you add in McCain batting 2nd not hitting for a long time. I think I question Krall and the front office on the handling of those 3. They’ve probably lost several games by running Steer and Stephenson out there for weeks when they should have been in extended spring training. Maybe it pays off later in the season and all 3 really start hitting. But we will see. It’s not just those guys but they were supposed to be mostly the right handed power so i think that’s why their struggles stand out.

Typical putrid performance against one of the worst teams in MLB !

    Pitiful !!!!

  73. GPod

losing 4 out of 6 to CWS & Pitts…..gotta be proud…..1 run over the last 18 innings….even better

  74. Don

The team simply was not built with enough offensive firepower to seriously contend for the NL Central. Pitching is good enough to keep the Reds around .500, but .500 won’t get you into the playoffs.

It’s the end of May. These poor offensive outputs are not anomalies. It’s the team’s identity.

    • Dennis Westrick

Yes, the current stte of the Reds offense is not an anomaly! Their putrid offense has now become the norm!

  75. JR

At this point if I’m Francona I request/demand a sit down with Krall & Castellini and lay it on the line listing all the offensive issues with this team. Then either he gets what he wants or resign and tell them to go find another patsy. It’s really that simple & I think he has enough in the bank to get them to listen. No one on the shelf is gonna walk through that door and make a difference.

    • Don

This team will not make much post season noise, if any, until the Castellini family is no longer running the show.

  76. Tom Diesman

Bummer, no big hits today. We’ll take the off day and then get after the Cubs at home.

  77. RedsGettingBetter

This team lost two series against WSox and Pirates , it’s disappointing, frustrating and makes me upset…

    • CLTRedsFan

Exactly!! They lost 2 out of 3 to the Marlins and Nationals too!! I hear folks say that the Reds play to the level of their opposition!! Starting with Friday’s series with the Cubs through the month of June the Reds Schedule is a shake down cruise!! We’ll definitely see if they can hang with better quality opponents!! By July we’ll know if the Reds are buyers or sellers during the trade deadline.

  78. Votto4life

Well, the 9th inning went as about as I expected. The Reds have scored one run in the last 18 innings.

I am not sure why I bought tickets for Friday Night’s game. I’ll get to see Hunter Greene pitch at least. It will probably be my last Red’s game of the season. I made it to mid-May in 2024 also. This offense is painful to watch. The players don’t even really seem to care. I think they are as surprised as anyone when they win.

  79. Dennis Westrick

And the Reds go meekly in the 9th with 2 more SOs! Fitting! All that hard work during the 5-game winning streak goes up in smoke against the last place Pirates!

Bring on the Cubs! Or maybe not!

  80. Redsfanny

Someone wrote recently the Reds are contending for both a division title and last place in the same year. So true.
My observation is our young players are talented but pressing. Playing hard yet without confidence. Time will tell how they handle the mental part of the game. Will they be overcomers and learn what it takes to win these close games? The pieces don’t quite all fit together as far as defensive positions. That doesn’t help.

    • GPod

This is the best pitching the reds have had in a long long time….and over & over they are flushing it down the toilet

  81. Kevin H

I think we all can agree they offense as a whole stinks. Elly isn’t doing anything, Stephenson is bad right now. Espinal is a solid bench player, however shouldn’t be starting all the time. On and on it goes. Good discussion all…

  82. Dan

Reds pitchers allow 5 runs in 3 games to the Pirates… we manage to lose 2 out of 3.

Just a pitiful team right now.

  83. Dan

As of this morning, per Baseball Reference, 21 out of 30 MLB teams have at least a 10% chance of reaching the postseason.

Reds chances at postseason = 3.3%

The only 8 teams with worse odds than the Reds are the bottom feeders (Rockies, White Sox, Pirates, Nationals, Marlins, A’s, Angels) and the most disappointing team in baseball (Orioles).
