The Cincinnati Reds injuries were piling up before the start of the game on Wednesday night. And then the game began. Hunter Greene had been lights out through the first three innings of the game, not allowing a run and striking out six batters.
When the 4th inning began Greene took the mound for his warm up pitches but shortly after that started Terry Francona and the trainer headed to the mound. The conversation wasn’t too long and then Greene walked off of the mound and to the dugout. Brent Suter was then called on to start the inning for the Reds.
Shortly after Suter took over the Reds announced that Hunter Greene had left the game with a right groin injury. It was the third injury of note for Cincinnati on the day. Noelvi Marte was placed on the injured list in the afternoon with an oblique strain. Then Jake Fraley was said to be unavailable today as he’s dealing with left calf tenderness according to Mark Sheldon of Reds.com.
Update:
Following the game manager Terry Francona told the media after the game that Greene felt his groin grab, not pop and that they would look at it again tomorrow and see how things are.
Reds' Hunter Greene to have MRI (groin) Thursday morning before team decides next course of action. He and team officials suggest it might not necessarily be severe. But Greene adds: "I don't know. I'm not a doctor."

If Cincinnati has to place Greene on the injured list it seems likely that they would call up Chase Petty to fill out his spot in the rotation. While he struggled in his big league debut, Petty returned to Triple-A last week and threw 6.0 hitless innings with eight strikeouts for Louisville. That outing lowered his ERA with the Bats to 2.54 in eight starts dating back to the final week of the 2024 season. The 22-year-old right-handed starter pitched on Tuesday night, so he would line up with the spot in the rotation that would be Greene’s if such a move needs to be made.
The only other pitchers on the 40-man roster that are healthy at this moment are relievers. While the Reds could make a move to add someone to the 40-man roster if they opted to, it wouldn’t make a ton of sense as Petty is clearly the best option at this point among the pitchers in Triple-A and the only other argument that could be made would be to call up Chase Burns from Double-A. Burns, however, has only thrown more than 61 pitches one time this season and has only pitched into the 5th inning one time this season.
After the game we will likely get a little more information on Hunter Greene’s injury. That may or may not provide us with a better idea of what the club will have to do in five days.

We just can’t have nice things in Cincy.
One day people will listen to me and the curse will be broken.
I hope that day comes soon! 🙂
Can we just erect a statue of Bo Jackson on Fountain Square and end this thing already?
@AC, sadly I remember that Bo game as a kid. That was a brutal injury! Thanks for ruining my childhood, Bengals. The 90’s were brutal being a fan. lol
Listen to you? No way. lol
Bo Jackson’s got nothing to do with the curse.
Collective sigh of relief. NJ, pen. Back to .500. Redemption game for Lodolo tomorrow.
Think it might be time to change whoever has been leading the pregame stretches in the middle of the circle for Pete’s sakes
The dreaded “pop”.
Yeah. That’s the part that says see ya in 2026
It’s his groin, not his elbow.
Maybe we can step back from the ledge for at least 24 hours? I know that isn’t the RLN way and all but jeez…
Not even sure where you guys are seeing he heard/felt a pop. Is this just ridiculous over-speculation?
I think that one is on me, 2020ball.
I misheard Francona and had him misquoted above (it’s now been fixed). He said Greene said he felt it grab, not pop.
Ok, sorry for my feistiness ??
Oops, ?? Were an emoji
He’s always been injury prone.
You don’t have to be this way.
Show your math
There it is. I was waiting for someone to say it. Lol
Greene was on the IL in late 2018 that lead to his TJ surgery and caused him to miss 2019.
The next time he was on the IL was August, 2022, three years later, for six weeks.
In 2023, he missed three months with a hip injury.
In 2024, he missed five weeks.
In seven and a half years pro, Greene has missed one year due to TJ and otherwise a total of 23 weeks.
That’s not “always injury prone.”
As far as “always injury prone:”
injury-prone
idiom
: frequently injured
It is pretty hard to be always frequently injured.

Are baseball players in general just not warming up enough. There seems to be so many hamstring, groin, and other freak injuries all over the game of baseball.
Everyone is more explosive these days. On purpose. But to be that way you have to do everything faster with more rotation and torque. I think we’re just at a point that everyone is pushing the body to the limit more than ever and you’re going to get these kinds of injuries.
“I think we’re just at a point that everyone is pushing the body to the limit more than ever and you’re going to get these kinds of injuries.”
I think that makes a lot of sense. A body can only take so much. Down time may be just as important if not more so than year round training. BALANCE
Melvin’s right: Doug’s comment does, as is so frequently the case, make sense.
Trade Diaz and Benson to Angels for Detmers and Adell. It’s a junk for junk trade, but all these guys could use a change of scenery. Detmers had a great spring as a starter and was good out of the pen for 9 outings, but his last 3 were disastrous. If Greene is out for a while, he may prove to be necessary depth in the rotation. Adell could platoon with Fraley in RF.
I truly dont see what Adell provides that Benson doesn’t. Benson has an extra year of control and already has seen far more success than him. Detmers peaked early and all his numbers are trending are in the wrong direction. Hard no on this, the team has enough 4th OFs that can provide the same production on the small side of a platoon with Fraley. Changes of scenery just for the sake of it isn’t what the team needs right now.
nothing like coming out of a left field with a comment, what does this have to do with Hunter’s groin ?
Avoidance is a perfectly reasonable response.
And now we wait …
From SI.com
“Reds manager Terry Francona spoke with reporters after the game and confirmed that Greene did not feel a pop, but a grabbing feeling. They will re-evaluate him on Thursday morning, but do not believe it’s a serious injury.”
A no pop is better than a pop. Hope that’s true.
Way better. Might even be good by his next start.
I think of this every time I hear about a groin injury. A little levity for us Reds’ fans today.
I mentioned this on the game thread, but the Reds don’t need to call up Chase Petty (or any other starter) anytime soon. If you look at the schedule, it breaks pretty favorably for the Reds.
Reds play 4 more games this week – use the other 4 starters
Off on Monday – skip Greene’s spot
Tues May 13 through Fri May 16 – other 4 starters
Sat May 17 – need a 5th starter
Sun May 18 – Wed May 21 – other 4 starters
Off on Thu May 22 – skip Greene’s spot
Fri May 23 – Mon May 26 – other 4 starters
As you can see, if the injury is minor, the Reds can go all the way until Tue May 27 and only need a 5th starter once. That’s 20 days after Greene’s injury.
Is that enough time for it to heal? Maybe not. But it still gives the Reds the ability to bring up an extra bullpen guy, or even an extra bat, to use in the short-term.
Personally, I wouldn’t call up Petty (or any other starter). Let him stay in Louisville and work on what he needs to work on. On that one day, May 17, start Suter or Richardson and make it a bullpen day. Then, hopefully, Greene is back within a few weeks.
That makes way too much sense
I’d use an AAA guy for the next “Greene” turn. It gives the other 4 starters an extra day of rest. It’s a long season.
Sometimes what is thought to be a pulled muscle turns out to be a variation of a cramp. So, it may not be as bad as we think.
Not me. I think that right now, it’s a fairly decent drop-off from our top 5 starters to whoever is next.
Lowder = injured
Miley = injured
Petty = not yet ready
Burns = definitely not yet ready
Spiers = more of a AAAA guy
If we have to use any of those guys as starters, it’s going to severely hamper our ability to win those games they start. I would rather limit their use by utilizing off-days whenever possible. The starters are all used to pitching on 4 days rest, they’ll be fine if we do that.
Again, if Hunter can come back in 20 days’ time, we will only need to cover one start. I say use some combination of Suter and/or Richardson to cover that one start, and cross our fingers for a quick recovery.
Obviously this is a big concern. But on a smaller tragedy note. I had a 3 part parlay going with Hunter having to strike out 7 . So of course he has 6 thru 3 innings and you know the rest.
Is there any update about Greene´s MRI results this afternoon? At the moment I write this, there is no a single move in Reds log transaction yet so I would guess Greene is going day to day for time being…
