Cincinnati Reds left-handed pitcher Wade Miley was making his second rehab start on Sunday afternoon as he attempts to come back from Tommy John surgery. He only threw 10 pitches in the game, with the final one leading to some sort of discomfort or pain as Miley threw the pitch then waved into the dugout for someone to come out and talk to him.

It’s tough to tell what happens here, but it’s also clear that he knew immediately that something did not feel right. The conversation on the mound with the trainer was short and he exited the game.

Update:

Wade Miley suffered a “lower body injury”. Nothing more specific was cited. If nothing else, it’s good news that it was not related to his pitching arm.

Miley had faced just three batters in the game. He recorded two outs and gave up a solo home run. The pitch he was injured on was just the second pitch of the at-bat to the cleanup hitter.

The 37-year-old left-handed starter signed with the Reds in the offseason on a minor league contract. He had Tommy John surgery with an internal brace on early May of 2024 when he was still playing for the Milwaukee Brewers. This past Tuesday he made his first rehab appearance, also pitching for Dayton against this same West Michigan team. The Whitecaps scored six runs on nine hits and a hit batter in 2.1 innings that day.

I like Miley but his arm is prolly cooked. He’ll be great on TV.

Well darn – my comment from the TySteve rehab post – “As for Miley, I expect it may be an all or nothing decision on his part – he either feels good enough and knows himself well enough to return to MLB, or it’s over. He doesn’t seem like the “hanger on” type; I think we may hear the same soon from Shaw.”

Update – very good, unless it’s a knee issue in which case oh well – still, much more hopeful than an elbow issue.

Strained elbow? Will be out till May 4th.

Wade is a good guy but the end might be close. Pretty sure there are better replacement alternatives even if he gets healthy.

As sad as it is, when you hit that age, your body just doesn’t bounce back the way it used to. A young pitcher may be able to make a full recovery from TJ surgery, but the older you get, the harder it becomes.

I don’t want to say this is the end for Miley’s career, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Either way, he deserves all the praise in the world for what he’s trying to do.

    We’ll see what happens next.

If that was the last pitch of his career, congrats to him on a great career. I want to see him in the dugout working with our starters. His pitching knowledge is immense.

Here here! My thoughts as well. TV or dugout this man has knowledge to spare.

Why isn’t Elly’s throw an error?
    The ball beat the batter!

His throw pulled 1B off the bag.
Thats an error — and keeps the No No.!

I thought the same thing. The other hit was basically a swinging bunt. Outstanding effort from the young lefty.

Oh well. Grounder roller breaks it anyway.
I hope we play like this against the Cards this week!

“Lower body injury” doesn’t sound career ending.

We’re all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the children’s game, we just don’t know when that’s gonna be. Some of us are told at eighteen, some of us are told at forty, but we’re all told
