The Miami Marlins picked up a win in the series opener on Monday night. Today the Cincinnati Reds will try to even things up and keep from extending their streak of losing the first game of a series and failing to win that series for the 34th consecutive time – a streak that dates back to June of 2023. First pitch is set for 6:40pm ET this evening.

Nick Martinez

It’s been a bit of a tough start for Nick Martinez this season. He’s allowed 14 earned runs in 21.0 innings through his first four starts. He’s also given up four home runs and walked seven batters. Neither of those latter two numbers are poor, but compared to how he performed in the two categories last season it’s a big step in the wrong direction.

In his breakout in 2024 he didn’t really show splits when it came to lefties and righties. Left-handed hitters had a small advantage when it came to average, which carried into their on-base percentage. His home and road splits were big. Away from Cincinnati he held hitters to a .503 OPS (.769 at home) and had a 2.18 ERA (4.00 at home).

Edward Cabrera

The season began for Edward Cabrera in Triple-A. He made two starts on a rehab assignment with Jacksonville, allowing two earned runs in 7.0 innings before joining the Marlins where he’s now made two starts and struggled with his control in both outings.

The splits last season for Cabrera aren’t too big when it comes to average – lefties did hit better here but neither righties or lefties hit all that well for average. Where the difference came was that left-handed batters made far more contact, walked significantly more, and hit for a bit more power than right-handed hitters did. This season righties have gone 1-12 against him, while lefties are 7-25 with four extra-base hits.

News and Notes

Tyler Stephenson, Sam Moll begin rehab assignments

Cincinnati sent catcher Tyler Stephenson and left-handed reliever Sam Moll to Triple-A Louisville to join the Bats on rehab assignments. You can read more about the moves from our piece earlier today if you are interested in more information.

Wade Miley also starts a rehab assignment

The left-handed starter will take the mound tonight for High-A Dayton. Unlike Stephenson and Moll, this is not a big league rehab appearance as he’s on a minor league contract for the 2025 season. Miley is recovering from Tommy John surgery and isn’t quite a full year away from having the hybrid procedure.

  1. Mark Moore

Just need some patience and for Jobu to wake up the bats. Here’s hoping Martinez has a reversal of fortune tonight.

Let’s get out there and MANHANDLE SOME MARLIN!!!

Best to TySteve tonight … we want you back at full strength.

      • Mark Moore

I used to do shark or swordfish. My First Wife is headed off on a solo trip in May. I’m thinking I need to get her to make up some of the glaze she does for our planked salmon and I’ll grill up a tuna steak. They end up on sale frequently.

  2. Klugo

How much are people paying for a closer these days? 21mil?

    • RedlegScott

Got anyone in mind you’d like to sell?

  3. LDS

Really need Candelario and/or Steer to start hitting. Maybe today? Otherwise, Stephenson at first and hope Trevino and Wynn keep hammering the ball.

  4. Votto4life

I am at the Bat’s game looking forward to see Tyler Stephenson tonight.

    • Mark Moore

Watching it now for a bit. TySteve’s looking pretty loose and good back there.

      • Votto4life

Yeah he made a good throw on the SB attempt.

      • Mark Moore

Pedestrian first AB and a backwards K. But he did nail a runner in the top of the 1st.

      • SteveAReno

Any chance they get They are going to run on Stephenson like a wild goose to test him and see if has the ability.

    • Votto4life

Cub’s prospect Owen Caissie is pretty impressive, he hit an opposite line drive bomb is the first inning. Wish he was in the Red’s system.

  5. RedsGettingBetter

It is not an encouraging start by the offense….

  6. Mark A Verticchio

Please quit striking out so much.

  7. RedsGettingBetter

It’s incredible the amount of walks Martinez has given up this year thus far…it’s weird in him

  8. Mark Moore

Walk leads to a run … where have I seen that flick before? 😐

  9. Mark A Verticchio

2 innings 4 K’s this is starting to get old.

  10. RedsGettingBetter

Well , it seems Cabrera took the things where Meyer left last night… 4 Ks in 2 IP six retired in order…This series isn’t looking good but there is still game to play

  11. Mark Moore

That was a pleasant surprise to end the inning.

  12. WCRon

Could be a very quick game. A pitcher with 6.5 ERA is looking like a Cy Young winner. We may not even score one run

And Martinez is not looking very good

  13. Mark Moore

Who is that wearing Marte’s uniform?

Looked like a line-drive that just kept rising … 😮

  14. RedsGettingBetter

Very good Noelvi Marte!! Is he becoming into his pre-PED shape?

  15. CI3J

Marte has been on a real tear lately.

Hope he keeps this up. This is the player we thought he could be.

    • Pharmer85

Now if they could get CES going when he comes back. How sweet that would be.

  16. Old-school

Tito looks to be having open tryouts corner infield

Steer and Marte you wanna beat out Candy??? Show me

Not sure Marte is our 3b but hes not looking overmatched hitting and he can flat out run

    • Andrew Brewer

      Meanwhile we’re missing Espinal’s bat …

  17. Mark Moore

Just missed that … a couple degrees lower launch angle and it’s out.

  18. Old-school

    Reds need this win

Cant lose series to the Marlins if you want to play october baseball

Gavin Lux may lead nl in obp

  19. Andrew Brewer

The score is tied at one a piece, but we’re being out pitched. Martinez had a good 3rd inning though… They are calling Rivera’s 94 mph pitch a changeup. His sinker is coming in at 97. He can also throw a slider and a curve.

    • Andrew Brewer

Excuse me, it’s Cabrera pitching for the Marlins

  20. Andrew Brewer

Martinez showing his big league savvy, and gets the runner trying to steal third. The Reds are hanging in there.

  21. RedsGettingBetter

    Trevino is a doubles machine

  22. RedsGettingBetter

Friedl!!! Reds take the lead 2-1

  23. Mark Moore

Played TJ to pull … and PULL he did … 😀

  24. Andrew Brewer

How about that ! back to back dbls with two outs ! Reds up 2-1.

    • Melvin

I was wondering when you were going to say that. 😀

  25. Ron

So Marte gets hot and the rest of the team goes into a slump.

    • greenmtred

Not Friedl or Trevino. Not Fraley, either. Or Hays. Or Lux. So you mean EDLC and McLain. Candelario may not be slumping.

      • JB

“Candelario may not be slumping” lol

  26. Andrew Brewer

    Excellent 5th for Martinez, 1-2-3

  27. RedsGettingBetter

Let’s see what Francona will do about Martinez keeping him for the 6th. MArtinez has been no good after 5 inning usually

  28. Andrew Brewer

    Awright Elly ! Leadoff single.

  29. Andrew Brewer

I figured Cabrera walked Hays after Elly stole 2nd. But then the Marlins change pitchers to face Lux.

    • Andrew Brewer

Lux goes down swinging on a 3-2 count, after Elly, and Hays dbl steal. Only one out.

  30. Andrew Brewer

The Candy Man comes thru… sac fly brings in Elly from third.

  31. Andrew Brewer

Ah, looking for a bigger inning there… We get 1. Reds up 3-1

  32. Andrew Brewer

Uh oh, 2 out dbl after an infield hit… two outs but one run in.

    • Andrew Brewer

Francona doesn’t hesitate to bring in Ashcraft.

  33. RedlegScott

Most unfortunate. An infield single with two outs followed by an RBI double.

  34. Andrew Brewer

Trevino leads off the 7th with a base knock. We have two good catchers, and neither one is named Stephenson.

    • Andrew Brewer

Watch out for that Bachar splitter ! Elly took one to the wall. but the Reds come up empty in the 7th. Reds lead 3-2

      • Doug Gray

Mark is correct, Andrew. We don’t need play by play, or close to it in the game thread.

    • Mark Moore

Easy on the running play by play Andrew … Doug didn’t appreciate it last year (same for many of us).

  35. Kevin H

Mclain needs to be sent down. If he can’t hit. My goodness…

  36. Mark Moore

Gave it a ride, but just a noisy out

  37. Andrew Brewer

We got a ball game going tonight ! the Marlins just tied it up.

    • Andrew Brewer

Big second out there, with a K from Ashcraft. Man one 2nd two outs now.

      • Andrew Brewer

OH, run scores on throwing error by the Pitcher…

  38. JB

McLain has OPS of .757. it was .811 yesterday. Yeah his BA isn’t good but I’ll take the OPS all day. He is in a slump. You don’t send every body down to AAA when they slump. McLain will go down and kill AAA pitching. He needs to stay and face Major league pitching. Maybe a couple of days off will clear his head.

    • Melvin

No way McLain is going to AAA. No need to worry.

    • Kevin H

You dont? Huh, according to some on rln that’s what you do. Go figure..

  39. Melvin

I’d say Candy has to come off the bag there to make sure that ball doesn’t get to the outfield and score a run.

  40. Andrew Brewer

Francona was quick to pull Nick, but not Ashcraft…

    • Andrew Brewer

Ah, on comes Santillan ! Reds down 4-3

  41. DK in Erie PA

Had my fill of Candelario already this year. Cant name anything that he does well

  42. Hanginwithem

Isn’t there a meteor shower at it’s peak overnight? Lyrids?

  43. RedsGettingBetter

It’s incredible to be losing back-to-back games against literally a team with a lot of unknown guys

    • SteveAReno

I’ve watched the Marlins closely and studied their team. They are better than their record, for sure. The Reds are close to getting swept because the Marlins are a really tough team.

  44. DK in Erie Pa

    Candelario is Spanish for Moustakas

  45. Kevin H

Well maybe a good sign. Candelario has hit two balls hard to the wall.

  46. Andrew Brewer

Reds need a two out rally here… Marte at the plate.

    • Andrew Brewer

Gotta hold ’em for the 9th.

  47. Mark Moore

A couple hard hit balls from Candy … but for naught.

  48. JB

Marte is laying off those pitches down and away and in the dirt. Last year he would have swung at all of them. His last at bat where he walked was a great at bat. Maybe the kid is turning the corner. Never give up on a 23 year old.

    • Mark Moore

Cautiously optimistic based on what I’m seeing lately.

    • Pharmer85

Puts the ball in play. What a concept!

  49. Gpod

i have a bad feeling this game is gonna go down in the column of “Game we shoud have won” Too many of them already in that column this season

  50. Tomn

Completely agree with the announcer. Why not PR Dunn for Lux and have him steal 2b against an awful catcher. I would have had Dunn PH for Fraley the inning or two ago.

What’s up with Tito? These seem like obvious moves. Or is Dunn hurt and we dont know it.

So frustrating. Another game that it looks like we are going to lose that we should have won.

  51. Mark Moore

Got that growing queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach … 🙁

  52. RedsGettingBetter

They can’t stop the rookie , unbelievable

  53. Andrew Brewer

Did a first pitch dbl leave Santillan rattled ? or did he just want first base occupied…

    • Andrew Brewer

and Barlow comes on to face Mervis, 1st and 3rd with one out.

  54. Mark Moore

Bike Helmets now, please … pretty please …

  55. Kevin H

Bad news Reds may lose game tonight. Good news 11-13 isn’t bad when you have over 5 months of baseball left to play.

    • LarkinPhillips

While true, this will also make 34 straight series the Reds haven’t won after losing game 1 of the series.

      • Kevin H

Such a amazing stat for sure. Truly amazing..

    • Erik the Red

Agree, however very concerned about the number of holes we have now. Bullpen appears to be below average when the game is on the line, lack of defense rears its ugly head to often, and offense seems to go dormant way to many games. Only starting pitching seems to be above average which is the good news.

    • Erik the Red

Agree it is a long season. However way too many holes with the relief pitching when the game matters, defense rears its ugly head way too often, and offense goes dormant far many games. Only the starting pitching appears to be above average.

  56. LarkinPhillips

Barlow looks like he could be brothers with Rhett lowder. Great job escaping that jam.

  57. RedsGettingBetter

Nice job by Barlow holding the game by 1 run heading to the 9th…Go go…

  58. Mark Moore

Last hurrah coming … I know we CAN do it … question is WILL we do it tonight … 😮

  59. Andrew Brewer

Reds escape the 8th, but need at least one run in the 9th to tie.

  60. JB

Man Marlins relief pitchers walk a lot of guys per 9

  61. LarkinPhillips

Can’t wait for the challenge system to get to MLB. (2nd strike)

  62. JB

Ump misses the call on ball 3 and changes the at bat for Trevino. I hate umps.

  63. Gpod

all the great feelings of scoring 24 runs on sunday….down the toilet

  64. Andrew Brewer

And so it goes, a one out loss for the Reds, 4-3.

  65. Kevin H

Up and down Reds go. LOL..

    On to tomorrow.

  66. RedsGettingBetter

The series against theorically a weak Marlins team is already lost and is in jeopardy to be swept tomorrow… The 2025 Reds team…

    • CLT Reds Fan

Never fails!! Every time folks mention that the Reds are embarking on an easy part of their schedule……..!! Just hope we win tomorrow and take 2 of 3 in Colorado. I guess we have to win the 1st game there for that to happen!! Just frustrating losing a series to a young team when the Reds are more of a veteran team. The 2025 Roller Coaster ride for tonight is over!! Looking forward to tomorrow’s game nonetheless!! Where else am I going to go?

    • SteveAReno

They are not a weak team. They have been very impressive and getting better every game. They have timely hitting and good defense.

  67. Tom Diesman

Another great day of baseball in the books. Hopefully tomorrow’s game will be even better.

Can’t wait to see them live tomorrow!
