The Cincinnati Reds wound up with two players and one manager who will be a coach in tonight’s All-Star game. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz and pitcher Hunter Greene will be joined in the National League dugout by their manager David Bell, who will be serving on the coaching staff this evening.
Neither De La Cruz or Greene are starting the game. Both are likely to get into the game, though. If David Bell gets into the game then something has gone terribly, terribly wrong.

Some news and notes
The Cincinnati Reds have drafted 21 players over 20 rounds in the last three days. We’ve got reports on everyone over at RedsMinorLeagues.com if you wanted to check that out.
Speaking of the draft – almost all picks in the draft are ones that can’t be traded. Only the competitive balance round picks can be moved in trade. That could be changing. Baseball America’s JJ Cooper has some more details, but the owners seem to be open to the idea.

Not having these guys in their regular team uniforms really detracts from the game. I get it’s only an exhibition, but still, IMHO it would be a lot more enjoyable to see other team’s players that we don’t see that often as they normally appear, and easier to identify them. But then MLB would have less revenue from selling those ugly things. Rant over.

Not watching, but seeing the comments about the uniforms. A friend over on FB (and a D-NYY fan at that) made a comment and I responded that the uniforms should reflect the state of the ASG … 😛
They do kind of look like “cartoon” uniforms. The National League ones are bad enough the the American League unis are down right ugly.

I loved it in the summer of 1957 when I was working in St. Louis and Reds fans voted in the starting 8 of the NL AllStar team. I recall the Commissioner made some adjustment for the game.
The Reds may have picked up a late-round winner in pitcher Cam Walty. I watched him all season long at Arizona and he was considered the staff ace.

Seriously y’all, can we please be happy for Hunter for being an all-star? Hate the uniforms, hate the airplane hanger of a stadium it’s in (I’ve been there), but be happy for Hunter and Elly for a day.

Relax everyone! I know it’s the norm in an All-Star game to use a pitcher per inning!
Didn’t understand putting Elly at 3rd but I think they are trying to get him 2 at bats, maybe he comes up in bottom of ninth with game on the line so makes sense.
Nice hitting by Elly going the other way there. Greene let’s up the Homer, but it happens. Duran though looks like Kenny Lofton vs. Reds pitching!

I watched a little, pretty boring honestly, seemed to be little energy in the crowd. I think the All Star game is really struggling. Will be good to get back to the regular season!
With the televising of all ML games, if you want to pay for it, and the balanced schedule, the uniqueness of the game is in the past. But, it’s an honor for a player to be chosen as an all star, and it certainly usually helps his career.
Hunter, topped out at like 97 (that I saw). He could have dialed up 101+, is he trying to be a pitcher? Instead of a thrower?
Would have loved to see EDLC get loose on the basepaths…

Beyond the pathetic uniforms, the next thing I find silly is that the starting pitchers only go 1 inning these days. Constantly reminds me of the year that Bud Selig called a tie game when each team ran out of pitchers.
The All Star used to men something to the leagues. Not anymore. It’s just like the NFL, NHL, NBA games, , , a complete bore.

But i agree it is still and honor for the guys to be picked such as Elly and Greene. Good for their careers for sure. I feel like the things surrounding and before the game, the fan fun stuff, games for kids, etc. is probably more enjoyable then being at the actual game.
