Graham Ashcraft

After spending three weeks in Triple-A, Ashcraft returned to Cincinnati last week to start against the Pirates and things could have gone better as he allowed six runs in 5.1 innings.

Lefties and righties have both found success this season against Ashcraft, but they get there a little bit differently. Right-handed hitters walk a bit more and have an advantage in on-base percentage. They hit for a good average and they’ve shown solid power. Lefties hit for a higher average, make tons of contact, and hit for a good amount of power against him.

Luis Gil

The 2024 season has seen Luis Gil return from injury and be one of the better pitchers in the American League to this point in the season. He allows fewer hits per 9-innings than anyone in the league. But he’s also struggled the last two times he’s taken the mound. On June 20th against Baltimore he gave up seven runs and didn’t get out of the 2nd inning. The Mets then scored five runs in 4.1 innings against him the last time he was on the mound.

The splits aren’t all that different in terms of slash lines for Luis Gil. Lefties have a small advantage in average and on-base percentage over righties, but neither group is performing particularly well. Left-handed hitters are walking more often and they are making a lot more contact, but so far it’s not resulted in much more production.

  1. Old-school

Nick martini stuart fairchild and Will benson starting in the outfield.

George foster cesar geronimo and ken Griffey it isnt

  2. RedsGettingBetter

I’m skeptical about Ashcraft facing the Yankees lineup. The matchup isn’t encouraging.
Luis Gil has been very good, it’s tough to defeat.
Hopefully the Reds and Ashcraft shut me up

    • Dennis Westrick

Tough task ahead for the Reds hitters facing two 9-game winners and a 7-game winner in this 3-game series!

  3. Mark Moore

1st game magic? Or do we break that streak. Awe inspiring it ain’t.

Man! I do so hate the NYY on principle.

  4. Dennis Westrick

So, 2 games past the halfway point in the 2024 MLB season, this is where our Reds stand! 1) six (6) games below .500; 2) 10.5 games behind the NL Central leading Brewers (10 games in the loss column FWIW) and 3) 4.5 games out of the 3rd & final NL WC spot (again, 5 games behind in the loss column.

All that being said, the next 13 games before the ASG break may be the “make or break” point to turn this season around!

Playing at NY against the Yankees evokes memories of when I first became a Reds fan at age 8 while also becoming a lifelong Yankee hater after the Reds lost the 1961 WS in 5 games to those darn Yankees!

Note to Bell and ALL Reds SPs & RPs! Exercise extreme caution pitching to Aaron Judge! Duh!

As always, block out the noise of the obnoxious Yankee fans, score early & often, limit the SOs, minimize the errors and NO TOOTBLANS!

    • Oldtimer

Six does not require (6) after it. That grammar rule changed 30 or 40 years ago.

  5. Myles

Today the Reds made their final payment to Ken Griffey Jr. who technically is their sixth highest paid player according to spotrac

    • Mark Moore

The Mets celebrated Bobby Bonilla Day this week 😛

  6. Matt McWax

Gil definitely still wears pajamas with feet.

    • Doug Gray

And why wouldn’t he? Those are the best kind!

      • Roger Garrett

Yes Sir they are and if I could get em on and off probably would still have a pair myself.

  7. Jason T.

What a pathetic outfield. Benson and Martini are not major league players.
Hoping Ashcraft can reverse the trend of a very disappointing season so far.

  8. RedsGettingBetter

Ashcraft was a little bit lucky, 3/4 contacts were hard…

  9. Mark A Verticchio

I was wrong Marte is not ready.

    • Matt McWax

      I recommend Rust-oleum unless it’s a banned substance.

  10. Mark Moore

Can’t make those kind of bad plays/throws like that one. Not against the NYY’s.

  11. JB

Oh look a bunt single. Some good teams do the little things to try to win.

  12. Indy Red Man

Ashcraft looks sharp so far. Marte iffy defensively and 5’10 Steer showing why thats not ideal at 1B. Same thing w/moving India there. Candy/CES might get that ball and stay on the base. Maybe?

  13. Matt McWax

The chewing never bothers me until he walks back to the dugout after striking out.

  14. Beaufort Red

    Fairchild and Benson over Fraley?

  15. RedsGettingBetter

Three easy inning by Gil against this cold Reds offense

  16. Indy Red Man

We’re such an exciting offensive team. Take about 12 losses a month where they score a total of 22 runs or so.

  17. Moon

Reds have now gone 14 straight innings without a run…

  18. Dennis Westrick

I seriously doubt that the Reds score a single run in this series! The Yankees have outstanding SPs and a good bullpen!

    I hope I’m wrong!

    • Dennis Westrick

OK! Made a liar out of myself! Now let’s win the friggin’ game!

      • Kevin H

LOL, this team is so up and down, your prediction was valid. Lol

  19. Mark Moore

Walk Soto to get to Judge … that’s a solid plan.

  20. Mark Moore

OK, got out of that one in good shape.

  21. Beaufort Red

Lazy throw from Martini to 2nd. This team has no discipline.

    • Kevin H

I saw nothing wrong with the throw.

  22. Jason Franklin

Maybe I am crazy, but I think the Reds should be sellers at the deadline. They are too inconsistent and so offensively challenged it feels like what they need is a change in approach/tactics when it comes to hitting. I don’t think a lot of these guys know how to do that and maybe the coaches neither.

  23. Mark Moore

Oh he caught that one nicely!!!!

  24. DW

Disappointing to hear Elly talk about being a huge Yankees fan growing up, as far as future contracts go. Enjoy him while we can.

    • Indy Red Man

Trying getting I have enough problems in 2024 to worry about 2029 or whenever

    • Mark Moore

He’ll be playing for them or the Dodgers. I think he’s made that abundantly clear. He wants a big market and a salary to match.

      • Jason Franklin

If the Reds don’t want to pay, than can you blame the kid? He is living the dream. He sees how Ohtani, Judge, etc are idolized and he wants a slice of that pie. I think they should have invested last year, ala the Braves (early on), and could have signed him to a 7-10 years deal at a relative steal. That is not going to happen now. They are probably looking at an escalating contract value. So, he would probably demand at or above $200 million for a long-term deal.

  25. Roger Garrett

Candy with an out to score Elly.Gave us a run and we actually took it.Good at bat.

  26. VaRedsFan

Paul O’Neil waxing poetic about the 1990 Reds.
As they got to comparing Elly and Eric Davis.

  27. Kevin H

Well the time is now for this team.

    Let’s go!!

  28. Roger Garrett

If we can’t hit are way on walks we will take. Two on one out and one in can we get some more?

  29. Mark Moore

HT to Martini for battling that AB and providing a productive out that almost made it over the fence.

  30. Mark Moore

Yeah, Marte is probably in mid-ST form at this point.

    • Kevin H

My thinking too, however would of liked to see reds bench him after that error. No excuse in that situation

      • Mark Moore

Hard to do when you are playing with only 11 on the bench (Fraley apparently not available, Maile a catcher).

      • Kevin H

@Mark, I didn’t know Fraley wasn’t available. Thanks, and yes hard to do

      • WCRon

How do you listen to Paul. Played tennis with him once at Harper’s point tennis club. Great athlete

    • WCRon

How do you listen to Paul. Played tennis with him once at Harper’s point tennis club. Great athlete

  31. Indy Red Man

Marte about to go full Benson….just weak outs instead of Ks. Took 1-0 and 1-1 right down the middle then can of corn at the top of the zone. Also if he’s going to make an error every series then just move Candy back over there

  32. Mark Moore

    OK for GA ToDay!!!

At least keeping things calm in NYC. And we ran up the pitch count for Gil a bit.

  33. Indy Red Man

Wow. Ashcraft with a change-up. When did that happen? His stuff is easily #2 starter good if he can command it. Yankee broadcast talking about him and a 97 mph cutter to Judge

  34. VaRedsFan

The pitcher threw it where Willie B swung.

  35. Roger Garrett

As the late great Mel Allen would say How about that? Will walked in to one.GO WILL.

  36. Kevin H

Question, could Aaron Boone win in cincinnati

    • Mark Moore

Probably. Still have roster challenges this year, but he actually played substantive baseball as a player which puts him well ahead of #75 of 30 (at least in my book).

    • VaRedsFan

He’d win 6-8 games more than Bell

    • Roger Garrett

I want to believe he can because he manages a team that is expected to win and thats all that matters.I don’t see him managing any other way and fell he will do whatever it take to win.

  37. Beaufort Red

Take it back! I love me some Benson. ?

  38. Indy Red Man

Xfinity robbed me of a Benson positive. Maybe he’ll have a big July and turn it around

    • Beaufort Red

Now that’s funny. Dude hits ONE home run. But keep on hanging in there.

  39. Mark Moore

2 hardest legs of the cycle in the bag for Elly … 😮

  40. Jason Franklin

I would love to see him lay down a bunt for the single. If he could bunt, man, he would destroy teams defensively against him

  41. JB

Elly with a 200 mph homer. That thing might have been over the fence before he hit 1st.

  42. Indy Red Man

Ball went around the plate. Candy absolutely right

  43. Roger Garrett

Crooked numbers are good for us.

  44. Roger Garrett

Its obvious as Elly goes so do the Reds.

  45. Kevin H

Game is far from over, however this is what’s frustrating about this team.

  46. Mark Moore

Why is Spencer still on 2nd? Not that it matters now anyway.

    • Kevin H

He was going on the pitch. Not sure if he was close to 3rd when ball was hit to Soto.

  47. Indy Red Man

Can’t bunt or defend the bunt. Just add that to the laundry list of can’t do’s

    • Kevin H

I think he is safe anyway. Yet he rushed the throw.

  48. Old-school

I think I keep Elly @ SS and the 2 hole

Hes easily the Reds best player and its not close

Yes he makes mistakes but hes their best player by far

  49. JB

Why does Bell have Marte playing back? The guy bunted the first time, Bell doesn’t think he will do it again?

  50. RedsGettingBetter

Ashcraft in one of his best outing. he’s locating and mixing the pitches good so far…

    • Harry Stoner

A trip to Louisville and Spiers breathing over his shoulder may just be what the medicine man ordered for Ashcraft.

  51. Roger Garrett

Bell don’t fall asleep right here.

  52. Mark Moore

Poor judgement on the throw and now it’s 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.

Time for a change. He did well for 5 but not the 3rd time through.

  53. Dennis Westrick

Bell!!!!!!!!! Don’t screw this up! You know GA usually runs out of gas the 3rd time thru the order which is usually the 6th inning!

Don’t lose sight of The Prize! A win in game one of a series with one of the best teams in the AL

  54. VaRedsFan

For the millionth time Fairchild….who in the heck are you throwing the ball too?

  55. Kevin H

Well good job Bell getting Ashcraft out.

  56. Roger Garrett

As long as mistakes are not addressed or excuses made for the mistakes they will continue to happen.Always must keep the double play in order.Just basic baseball.

  57. Mark Moore

And this is why we can’t have nice things … 🙁

  58. docproc

So many brain farts by Fairchild this season.

    • Mark Moore

He’ll never be more than a AAAA 5th outfielder. We’ve seen enough of him to know that’s the case.

  59. Mark A Verticchio

This all started on a ball that a decent center fielder catches.

  60. Mark Moore

Good heads up play by Martinez with the “lookie what I found” catch.

  61. Roger Garrett

This is all on Bell it just is.Guy is asleep.Reds will never be any more then they are right now with him at the helm.

    • Kevin H

How is this on Bell Roger? This inning how is it on Bell?

      • Roger Garrett

My mistake,Espn showed Ash pitching to Rice who doubled.

    • Dennis Westrick

Always! Always! Always! one batter too late! After the 2nd hit given up by GA resulting in a run scored Bell should have gone to the bullpen!

      • VaRedsFan

        Hit (should have been caught)

Bell removed GA….just like you requested.

    • VaRedsFan

Bell does plenty of bad things.
This inning has nothing to do with him.

    • Amarillo

It’s not like the Yankees’ hitters are chumps.

  62. Kevin H

Interesting stat Martinez has now inherented 8 base runners. 6 have scored now

    • Dennis Westrick

And those runs are not charged to the RP! That’s why I say ERAs for relief pitchers are meaningless!

      • Kevin H

That we agree on Sir. LOL I have always dis liked that stat

  63. Mark Moore

Martinez having some control issues tonight … 😮

  64. Mike W

    Wrong move again bell.
Cruz, not Diaz is who bell should always bring in at pivotal moments like this: 2 on, o outs. Hopefully Martinez lucks out and gives up no runs!

  65. Mark Moore

    I guess that’s limiting the damage … somewhat … 😐

  66. Mike W

    Oops, meant Martinez, not Diaz
Phew, escaped with only 2 runs.
Martinez had given up 4 of 6 inherited.
Now 6 of 8. Not get guy to use Bell!

  67. VaRedsFan

Candy busted an 0-18 slump with that single.

  68. Mark Moore

Need 9 outs against the NYY ballclub. Tall order, but maybe that 1st game magic does shine tonight.

  69. Kevin H

Moll, Cruz, and Diaz would be my next 3 pitchers from pen.

  70. Indy Red Man

Jim Walker is officially on his own with Stuey.

Kid is an athlete, but I swear a decent high school OFer has a better idea what to do with the ball when he gets it. You’re a professional baseball player and you have to know the basic fundamentals. He’s also only really good in the OF when he’s going back on a ball. Doesn’t get a good jump on anything else

  71. Mark Moore

OK, Marte got that one. Throw still didn’t look a clean as it should have IMO.

  72. Mark Moore

Oops … thigh-high to Judge … not a good spot.

    • VaRedsFan

The one guy you should nibble with.

  73. Mike W

    That’s exactly right Kevin H.
The owners must love bell helping manage their budget.
I’m used to him pulling pitchers out before they can get to 5 innings to prevent a W, AND this was a new one: he pulled Ashcroft before he could pitch 6 to stop a quality start.
W’s and quality starts. Two of the biggest metrics pitchers use to negotiate higher salaries. Come on RPs. You can close these Yanks out. Oops.

    • Tom noonan

Unbelievable. Intentional walk. All day long.

      • Kevin H

Then you put go ahead run at the plate. Rather a solo homerun than a two run shot

  74. Kevin H

I like Aaron Judge a good solid baseball player.

    • Mark Moore

Same. I really thought he was headed to the West Coast.

  75. Mike W

The key will be not having to face Soto and Judge again tonight!
Come on guys, you can dio this!

  76. Indy Red Man

Moll only has 8 pitches with RLRL coming up. I think I’d let him face the first 2 atleast before I went to Cruz.

  77. Roger Garrett

Reds will need to scores some more runs if they want to win this game.Bell will and should use all of high leverage guys to try and get the win but at 5-4 it will be tough.

  78. Dennis Westrick

I think I said earlier that Reds pitchers need to pitch carefully to Judge! At least it was a solo shot and, if the Reds RPs in the 8th & 9th innings pitch well, that was Judge’s last bat in this game!

  79. Indy Red Man

Luke Weaver….if he was a Batman villain he’d be called The Nibbler

As a baseball player I despise his gutless approach

  80. Roger Garrett

It will be up to the pen to get the win.

  81. Dennis Westrick

Weaver NEVER pitched like that for the Reds!

  82. Mark Moore

REALLY need 3 quick outs here. Cannot afford to fiddle around.

  83. RedsGettingBetter

I have a bad feeling of this game… Hopefully I am wrong on that

  84. Kevin H

A win like this could be start of something Big.. 🙂

    • Roger Garrett

Your right cause this is big time baseball that they play in New York.Win this one and you never know.

      • Kevin H

Lets go!!! LOL seriously yes in my opinion Reds can’t seem to get out of their own way at times.

    • Indy Red Man

But I used to think that every time we won the first game of the series

  85. Indy Red Man

Swung at ball 4 & 5. Thank you sir

  86. Mark Moore

That one just died a slow death … 3 up and 3 down for Cruz.

Hold on to your bu++s …

  87. Indy Red Man

8-9-1 for Alexis….not bad on paper

  88. Kevin H

Reds gotta score at least 1 run for abit of breathing room.

  89. Mike W

    Cruz is sooo good.
How about an insurance run from Elly?!

  90. Roger Garrett

Cruz remains nasty with 95 and the 81 split and we go to the ninth.More runs please.

  91. RedsGettingBetter

Ok, Cruz had his work perfectly retiring a clean inning. It is important because the 8th, 9th and 1st hitters left due up to the 9th inning having chance to avoid Soto and Judge…

  92. Kevin H

Terrible strike call on Benson WTF

  93. Indy Red Man

Boving droppings…Benson drew a walk and it wasn’t that close

  94. Mark Moore

Combined blame on that one falls on Benson and the Chumpire. Cowboy noting Weaver didn’t throw one over the plate that entire AB.

    • Kevin H

Your right Mark, however he drew a walk and it wasn’t called. I realize you seen that. Home plate robot umps can’t come soon enough

  95. Kevin H

Sometimes I wish Reds players would yell and get in face of umpires. These strike zone’s from umpire is so unpredictable

    • Mike W

Occasional yelling is the managers job.
      Oh, wait…….

    • Amarillo

We don’t have enough bench depth to have players get tossed

  96. Mark Moore

And here we go … good thing Diaz threw a day or so ago.

  97. Kevin H

with short porches down left field and right field line, not alot room for error.

  98. Roger Garrett

Diaz is going right at them with 94 and 87 slider.Need one more.

  99. Mark Moore

    And … EXHALE!!!

First Game Magic reigns supreme in NYC. Diaz twirled a fantastic 9th to shut it all down.

  100. DaveCT

MBS, re Diaz, i take it all back. Lol.

  101. Kevin H

Okay, we all know what has happend

    Lets change it tomorrow!!!!

  102. JB WV

When he gets ahead in the count he’s lethal

  103. Doc

First game of a series. Could one expect any different result?

    • Andrew Brewer

I did. I actually thought the Yankees would come back and spoil our win…

Reds did it with 5 hits, and Elly had a homer and triple, and Benson with a Bomb with one on, just like Elly’s. A walk and hit by pitch came back to defeat the Yankees because each was followed with one over the wall.

This was by no means a first game blowout. The Reds needed one in the 9th, and didn’t put a man on.

  104. Indy Red Man

Easy peasy!! Diaz 18 of 20 saves and thats all I care about. If we’re up 2-3 and his walk runs around unopposed then that run doesn’t really matter anyway

  105. RedsGettingBetter

REDS WIN!!! At least winning one game in this tough series it’s very good ! I had forgotten the Yankees faced the more powerful team of baseball in opener games

  106. Stoney

Very good outing by Ashcraft. Excellent all round game by Elly. Need TJ back in center field in the worst way. Let’s take the series please!

  107. RedlegScott

Another first game win. Where do we go from here?

  108. Kevin H

While I know Dunn didn’t hit. I would rather have him in center. Call him up

    • Redsvol

I’ve been saying this for weeks. He is a good fielder and gets on base. He will learn to hit if they plug him in and tell him the job is his. Instill some confidence in him.

  109. Roger Garrett

Reds win and Bell used his A team out of the Pen and they got it done.Diaz went right at them throwing strikes and nails it down.Bell pushed all the right buttons and they delivered

  110. Mike W

Okay, we’re 40-45. I still think 90 wins is necessary to insure a WC spot. So we need to go 50-27 (.649) the rest of the way. I’ll tell you what my fellow die hard Red’s fans, let’s take 15 of the next 20 and “all” we’ll need to do from there on out is go 35-22 (.614). Let’s go guys, we can still do this!

    • Indy Red Man

Is it legal in your state? Be careful

  111. Kevin H

Jim day asking question’s and sometimes I wonder if De la Cruz has a hard time understanding the question? Reason I say this is Day said ” you hope to play here one day” De la Cruz seemed taken back by question and said yes.

De La Cruz is very humble a good all around player.

    • TR

EDLC was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, so his native language is Spanish. As far as someday playing in New York, Elly’s got star quality and New Yorkers love that.
