After scoring 11 runs on Thursday night, the Cincinnati Reds (38-44) offense went silent Friday night. They’ll look to rebound against the St. Louis Cardinals (42-39) Saturday afternoon, but they’ll have to do it while facing former Reds pitcher Sonny Gray. First pitch is set for 2:15 PM EDT, pending weather.

Carson Spiers

Twenty-six year old right-hander Carson Spiers has been that pitcher who probably needs his own shuttle service for trips between Cincinnati and Louisville, as he’s been between the big league team and Triple-A multiple times in 2024. He’s likely felt both lucky and unlucky since being put into the rotation this month. In his first start of the season, he took the loss against Pittsburgh because even though he allowed four runs in six innings, the Reds scored only one run. In his next start, also against Pittsburgh, the Reds scored 11 runs and he earned the win despite allowing three runs (although this was a quality start, as he pitched six innings).

Spiers doesn’t strikeout out a lot of batters; however, what he is doing well is not walking batters. He has walked only six in 31.1 innings and his BB/9 rate is only 1.7. He’s in the 93th percentile in MLB in BB%. Of his five pitches, his four-seamer and his sweeper are the two pitches with the highest whiff rate. In what is not a coincidence, these are also the two pitches he throws the most of his arsenal.

Sonny Gray

When Sonny Gray pitched for the Reds from 2019-2021, his curveball and his two-seam fastball were prominent pitches in his arsenal (over 20 percent of his pitches, according to Statcast). However, in the last couple of years, he’s focused more on his four-seam fastball and sweeper, while his curve has dropped to about 17 percent usage. It’s worked for him, as he made the American League All-Star team last season and is on his way to another All-Star appearance with the National League in 2024.

Gray has been dominant against all batters, but lefties have hit him a little better this year. Regardless, he still has one of the best strikeout rates in MLB at the 93rd percentile, and is at or above 30 percent no matter which side of the plate the hitter is on. It’s not what you want to see against a team in the top 10 in strikeouts in all of baseball. Another thing stacked against the Reds today is that Gray has pitched significantly better at home. He’s got a 1.51 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 47.2 innings at Busch Stadium. His ERA on the road, by the way, is 4.54.

Minor League Recap

Catch up on all the action from the Reds’ minor league teams last night, including scores and game notes.

Stat of the Day

There’s been a lot of sadness around the Reds record in one-run games this season. It’s not great (they are 6-15), however, it made me curious as to when the last time the Reds were this bad in one-run games. It didn’t seem that long ago that fans were bemoaning this, but apparently it was five years ago. Even in 2022 when the Reds lost 100 games, the record in one-run games was only 21-23.

Reds have lost 4 games 4-3.Three games 2-1,Three games 1-0,Two games 3-2,Two games 6-5 and One game 5-4.Reds aren’t good fundamentally thus the low scoring one run losses as was on display last night.Big discussion as to the play where the Cards scored last night as to who should have caught the ball or called for the ball and if you listen to Bells comments about it you then get why they play how they do and why they will not get better.Just for the record its the outfielders ball, always has been and always will be regardless.

    • RedsFanInFL

Yup, something that was taught to me early on in little league

  2. RedsGettingBetter

Austin Wynns debuts today. It could be good that Wynns should’ve received the pitches of Spiers at triple-A many times this year. It is interesting to know how the things were going in those games…

  3. Melvin

Good point about on run games Ashley. If you get a chance you might look up the last time the Reds had a player with the strikeout percentage that Benson has to go along with the rest of his numbers.

  4. TJ

I bet what I have left in my draft king’s account on the Cardinals to win by 2 or more runs. A sacrilege I know, but I consider it to be easy money.

    • VaRedsFan

I took Sonny Gray over 6.5K’s.
Although he ran his pitch count up that inning…could be in jeopardy.

  5. VaRedsFan

I don’t understand how Contreras can catch last night, and turn around and catch a 1PM day game the very next day.

    • Roger Garrett

Don’t happen with us so I don’t know.

  6. RedsGettingBetter

Noelvi Marte has many ABs with RISP yesterday. Today his first AB comes with RISP. He stranded all the runners so far…

    • VaRedsFan

Marte has shown the ability to go opposite field.
That was the perfect pitch to do it on….but he rolled over on it.

    • JB

True but I would rather have him in there over Espinal. The guy is basically going through Spring Training. Espinal hasn’t done anything in 82 games. Same with Benson, Maile, Martini etc.

      • VaRedsFan

        Definitely want Marte in there.
I want him to use all his tools though.

  7. Roger Garrett

Marte did a great job Thurs by just flipping that low and away pitch to right.

    • VaRedsFan

Thought the same thing Roger…mentioned above.

    • Harry Stoner

Some RLN fans giving up on Marte by his 3rd game.

  8. Roger Garrett

Can’t give up on players that are 22 23 24 25 26 and we have a bunch of them.

  9. DHud

Was Marte waiting on an invitation to throw that ball to 1B??

He Should be thankful it didn’t result in runs

    • Melvin

An error on an easy play with the runner not running full out even.

Chris Welsh – “That’s not the way to win close ball games. It just is not”.

  10. Roger Garrett

Whats the odds of a lead double by Wynns? How about he never moves?

      • Roger Garrett

Hey I will gladly pay up.Just want Reds to win.

  11. RedsGettingBetter

What a AB from India… He’s unstoppable right now

    • Melvin

Whatever you/we do don’t wake him up. 🙂

  12. JB

Jon is on a heater. I’m hoping he is making the next step in becoming a good hitter and this is what we will see constantly.

  13. Roger Garrett

OK how about he never moves?Honey get the money may cost me for this win today.

  14. Old-school

    Lets all appreciate Jon India

    Hes on fire

    • CincyDo

Amen. He sees the ball, he hits the ball, making Willie May proud

  15. PhP

What was up with Steer trying to bunt (on a bad pitch no less). Bad AB by him there.

    • Roger Garrett

Fraley also and we don’t score that 3rd run.

  16. RedsGettingBetter

    Marte stranded another RISP

  17. DHud

Is Marte mentally at the ballpark today??

  18. Melvin

An error leads to a double. Not picking on Marte. Just a team thing.

    • VaRedsFan

He almost dropped another infield pop, and has a throwing error. Not a good look for him today.

    • PhP

Marte not looking good defensively right now either. Almost has 3 errors in 2 innings but he recovered on the infield pop up he almost dropped.

  19. DHud

    Should’ve been out

    Instead he scores

    And the beat goes on

  20. Roger Garrett

It is what it is and has been and will be until well pick a date.

  21. JB

The sun must be brutal. Marte looked like he was fighting that pop up too.

  22. Roger Garrett

Seen enough and will be back next week.Won’t watch the throw away get away game tomorrow.Seen that movie way too many times.GO REDS.

    • Ted Alfred

Yep good decision. Don’t worry, David Bell will do what he’s always does on getaway games and put together a lineup that’s almost sure to lose because winning really doesn’t matter…just as long as everybody’s feelings aren’t hurt

  23. RedsGettingBetter

Spiers had bad luck in this 3rd inning, maybe he pitched for a scoreless frame

  24. CincyDo

Didn’t expect to get 6 hits off Gray through 4 innings. Baseball.

    • JB

Right! I thought Gray would get 12 or 13 k’s.

  25. Melvin

Our .190 hitter who leads the league in strikeout percentage is STILL playing and Ks again.

    • JB

Why he isn’t hitting 9th when he does play is puzzling. Even Wynns has a hit.

  26. Beaufort Red

Down goes Benson! If it wasn’t so pathetic it would be comical.

  27. JB

Good thing about Martini getting a hit is it turned the lineup over for next inning. Positive!!!

    • Melvin

Good thing it’s not snowing too. That would be tough. 😀

  28. JB

Elly makes it look so easy on that triple.

  29. Mark Moore

He glanced over the shoulder to pick up that ball and then kicked it into the next gear. Almost a stand-up triple … 😮

  30. CincyDo

Even on an out, JI made Gray work, making almost a perfect pitch.

    • JB

Yep and you would hope others would follow his lead.

  31. DaveCT

September 21, 2022, Reds selected the contract of Michael Siani.

    August 31, 2023, Reds DFA’d Siani.

Siani was 18 years old when he signed (DOB 7/16/1999; signed July 3, 2018).

I am not positive but i do not believe Siani had to be added to the 40-man until the 2023 off season.

So, we may well have accelerated his clock AND gave him away one year before required.

Siani plays gold glove CF. As he is showing, if he hits *just enough* he is a valuable player.

Certainly a better player today than Fairchild, Benson, Hurtubise, & Dunn

See above, gold glove defense, hitting just enough.

    • JB

If I remember right he wasn’t hitting squat at the time. Neither was Siri and the Reds just let them go.

      • Mark Moore

Your memory matches mine. It’s always about choices with the general crap-shoot that is a prospect.

      • DaveCT

Siani had a bit of a breakout in 2022 while in AA, slashing .252/.345/.404 (OPS .749).

But he was anemic in the ML’s, as you note. However, that was in just 24 at bats.

  32. Mark Moore

Didn’t want him to blast it, so he plunked him. Gray is in some deep-ish doo here. Need to finish this job.

    • Jim Walker

My thought too. If they can signal for an automatic intentional BB at the start of a PA, why not let them do it anytime during a PA? Or at 3/2 just take a clock violation versus plunking a guy/

  33. Mark Moore

A rare bobble from Nolan and we make some hay whilst the sun shines. That’s it for Sonny. Glad we got to him this much.

    • VaRedsFan

Nolan got lucky on Indias hit.
His defense has declined big time over the years.
Used to be one of the best.

  34. Kevin H

Well so much for Reds couldn’t score off Gray. LOL I just started watching. Looking at box score India and De La Cruz doing it again.

  35. Mark Moore

Into their pen again … I like that for this trip. Positive thoughts. Just a little slap or lift here, Santiago … please.

    NOT a liner to SS.

  36. CincyDo

Gladly taking the gift from arenado

  37. Mark Moore

Stewie finds a hole and we plate two more.

  38. VaRedsFan

Stuey was due some good fortune.

    • JB

Well he was hitting off a lefty. He should never hit off a righty.

  39. JB

Love it when we steal against Contreras

  40. CincyDo

Glad to see Stuey come through. He got a couple tough breaks the last couple of games

  41. Mark Moore

And our Blind Hog Benson finds his acorn. Now all Wynns has to do is turn over the line-up and we’ll count this inning very successful.

    • Mark Moore

Or that can happen. That works as well.

  42. VaRedsFan

Yes….it is indeed snowing in St Lou.
Pigs were seen flying as well.

  43. RedsGettingBetter

Fairchild and Benson provided 4 runs … Good by them… It should be more frequent…

  44. CincyDo

Benson probably broke the game open with that hit. Reds win when they have contributions from bottom of line up. It’s that simple.

  45. PhP

Even Benson is getting in on the action.

  46. Tom Mitsoff

Great to see this team get some big hits with men on the basepaths and two outs. Very few and far between so far this year.

  47. JB

Arenado is not having a good day. With the glove or his lazy run to first base.

  48. Kevin H

Keep Wynns in the roster!!! He can DH… lOL

  49. RedsGettingBetter

It’s very interesting if Austin Wynns can hit more than Maile….

  50. VaRedsFan

Will Indy, of all people, make 2 outs in an inning?

    • VaRedsFan

He had 2 of the better hit balls in the inning.

  51. Mark Moore

Nolan got his chance at redemption. Indy just not fast enough.

  52. Beaufort Red

Wish Sadak wouldn’t say the Reds are running roughshod over the Cards. Nice yes but it’s only the 5th.

    • Daytonnati

Poor Roger Garrett didn’t see anything? 🙂

    • VaRedsFan

That was in reference to all of the stolen bases

  53. JB

Arenado stole two hits from India today.

    • Melvin

Don’t believe I’ve ever seen that. lol

      • Melvin

Per Sadak he’s never played outfield before. 🙂

      • Melvin

He’s looking around and saying, “Wow. There’s a lot of room out here”. 😀

  54. Mark Moore

Sorry, Matt. That just looks like F-9 in the box score 😛

  55. Old-school

    Carson Spiers

Is this the second coming of Dan Straily???

What a nice 5 innings of entertaining baseball

    Need more of this.

    • earmbrister

Seems like he tends to keep balls in the ballpark. Really nice outing, again.

  56. VaRedsFan

Love the shutdown inning after scoring a lot.
    Hat tip for Mr. Spiers.

  57. JB

Spiers has his ERA at 2.97. The guy might not have been a starter at Clemson but he is in the Majors. Way better than Ashcraft. Spiers is a pitcher. Ashcraft is a thrower.

    • Melvin

Spiers IS pitching pretty well today. Good thing Aschraft is up too though. His bobblehead day is coming up. 🙂

  58. PhP

Seems strange not to PH with Jordan there. At least he plays OF. Also not like Espy is known for his bat.

    • Melvin

Not known for his bat? Sure he is. He was the DH the past few games. 😉 What are you talking about? 🙂

    • Kevin H

Interesting development here Spiers 5th starter for the reds. Ashcraft 5th?

Who goes and who stays. Or dfa Wilson from bullpen?

  59. Kevin H

Strike zone seems to be so inconsistent these days

    • Mark Moore

I have to avoid watching it. It already makes me angry. Too much anger would drive me over the edge.

      • Kevin H

I was so annoyed after lastnight. I purposefully didn’t watch beginning of game. Looked at game day and was like wow. Then decided to turn it on and watch. LOL

  60. Old-school

    Watching bad baseball again.

    Except its the Cardinals!!!

    Thats double fun

  61. Melvin

I think it’s safe to say Espinal pinch hitting and playing the outfield (for the firs time) that David Bell does not like Jordan. lol Providing of course that Jordan is available. 🙂

    • Kevin H

Well can’t argue, defend, or anything. Bell knows things.

Of course Jordan maybe hurt who knows. Lol

      • Melvin

The way things have been going he is probably hurt somehow. 🙂

      • Melvin

Jordan playing the outfield now so I guess that answers the question as to whether he was available. 🙂

    • JB

Bell loves his veterans getting first opportunity off the bench.

      • Melvin

Like it or not Bell IS loyal. Just look at the Benson situation. 🙂

  62. Mark Moore

Stewie actually had a plausible shot at that one 😮

  63. Old-school

    @Dave CT

Take a bow and a victory lap

But… who else had Carson spiers before the season pitching great with depth each start and competing against every hitter in the zone

    Well done

    • DaveCT

Thanks, Old School. It’s been fun to watch him.

  64. Mark Moore

And Wynns legs out a double. Go figure.

Care to knock him in, Jon?

  65. Melvin

Sign that Wynns guy up. Three doubles. 🙂

      • JB

Hey wth Espinal never played the outfield.

      • Melvin

That’s right. What does experience have to do with anything? 🙂

  66. earmbrister

    Stephenson is getting Wally Pipped.

    • Mark Moore

I worked for a company that was owned by the Pipp family. They were a little sensitive to that whole thing as you might imagine.

  67. RedsGettingBetter

Austin Wynns has 3 doubles in 4 PAs , the same amount than Maile in 111 PAs… LOL

  68. JB

Wynns hitting .750 on the year! What else does this guy have to do to get to the All Star game. Criminal he hasn’t got enough votes.

    • Melvin

Obviously the voting is rigged. 🙂

  69. Mauired

    Does Maile have options?

Wynns has the same amount of doubles in one game as Maile has on the season.

  70. 50thyearRedsfan

Seems another sickness is running through the Reds clubhouse India has infected his teammates with that doubles virus he picked up last week ?

  71. RedsGettingBetter

India’s stretch is really incredible… Glad for him taking the 2021 shape

  72. CincyDo

Something about the first game. Marte had 3 hits, and Wynn now has 3 hits

    • Mauired

I think Maile had a homer on opening day. Not sure though it was a long time ago

  73. Old-school

    Folks

I dont care Jon India isnt Brandon phillips at 2b defensively

I do know the guy knows the strike zone and gives you a good at bat and is on fire

    Find a spot somewhere

The dude gives you a competitive professional at bat every time and this team desperately needs that

  74. gusnwally

With Goldy’s HR I have completed 3 of my 4 SG wagers. Fraley with a hit and Siani. I need one from Contreras. I really thought Sonny would be tuff. Lovin the score, but I would like one more hit.

  75. Harry Stoner

Wilson can get the Curds back in this game in a jiffy.

    • Jim Walker

Good recovery by Wilson just as it looked like the Cards were on the cusp of getting back in.

Of all the things I do not like about Bell’s style. his blasé attitude with a lead ranges right up there with his lockstep commitment to platoon matchups at the top of my list.

He is worse than DustyB was at sitting on his hands while a big lead fritters away. At least with Dusty that was about the only thing I took serious exception to.

      • Harry Stoner

Yep…he’ll pull a guy who’s on and effective and wait until things have gone in the ditch with someone who doesn’t.

It remains a mystery why so often Reds’ relievers enter the game seemingly unprepared to pitch.

Wilson and Sims had no control of their pitches, and no apparent game plan for the hitters they were facing.

        Spraying pitches all over.

  76. dimondfvr

I think we have all seen enough of Wilson today!

    • Melvin

Never fear. Sims is warming up. 🙂

  77. Mark Moore

OK. Limited damage. Lead feels safe-ish at this point. WLBDB’s bullpen has to be completely gassed.

  78. RedsGettingBetter

Wilson limited the damage to just 1 run

  79. Kevin H

Wilson battled and gets job done. Whew..

  80. RedsGettingBetter

Marte has been terrible. At least could put the ball in play with the bases loaded in the 6th inning to induce an error and getting a RBI..

    • Jason Franklin

Terrible? Really? He just got back from the ‘stupid idiot list’ but he is far from terrible. His defense is usually solid. I think he is just playing excited like any 22 year old young adult would be. I would hold to cast judgement for at least a few weeks.

  81. Mark Moore

“Hold on to your bu++s …”

  82. Old-school

Lucas Sims in low leverage 9-3 situation with an empty stadium in St Louis in the 8th inning still cant get outs. 3 hits. When do the Reds bring up Santillan and end the Lucas Sims spin show?

    • Kevin H

In all fairness a bloop hit to center and a bloop over the mound. They weren’t exactly crushing his pitches.

    • Kevin H

But I agree the Sims show has grown old.

  83. WCRon

Sims is a disaster waiting to happen

  84. Mark Moore

Cruz with runners on 1st and 3rd … what could possibly go wrong?

  85. Mark A Verticchio

Cruz, Moll and maybe Diaz only guys I trust.

  86. Kevin H

I don’t think you send Spiers down or Ashcraft when Lodolo comes back. 1 should go to bullpen.

    • Harry Stoner

Some healthy Spiers vs Ashcraft competition would be a good thing.

Spiers is coming on….I’d hate to see Krall / Bell foul it up.

Neither are Mr. Intuitive or Mr. Insightful.

      • Kevin H

So true, like sending Moll down earlier this season literally for no reason than he has options.

      • Harry Stoner

Ashcraft apparently took his demo pretty hard.
Tough to say how much communication he got about it.
He was pretty terse and snarky when answering questions about ‘what he worked on…’
Then talking a lot of smack after a rugged return performance.
Reds need his high ground ball style back.
Isn’t going to hurt to have Spiers breathing down his neck.
Ashcraft’s next start will be telling.
But I’ll bet Krall and Bell are as surprised by Spiers as the rest of us.
I don’t trust either to handle it well.

  87. RedlegScott

Nice job, Suter. Another quality start from Spiers.

    • Harry Stoner

Spiers and India’s resurgence have been the (positive) surprises of 2024.

  88. Jim Walker

Another 2 hit day for Stu. And another hit off of RHP. Believe that makes 3 hits off RHP in his 3 most recent games. In total, he has 6 hits in his last 5 games.

  89. Mark A Verticchio

Guaranteed series split but 3 of 4 would be great.

  90. Dennis Westrick

Anybody else on this site wonder how many runs this Reds team would score if they didn’t average a SO per inning?

Great win! Outstanding job by Spiers!

  91. Kevin H

I am carried away I know, however can reds carry 3 catchers? Wynn did well today and only 1 game. Still play him tomorrow!!!!

    • Jason Franklin

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bell has Maile starting. Maybe they should go with a DH/C thing like they do with Stephenson/Maile? I am always in full favor of going with the hot hand. Maybe I am too old school?

    • Mark Moore

Nope. Just can’t do it. They might, but they shouldn’t.

  92. Mark A Verticchio

    Maile starting today, no surprise.
