Hunter Greene

The last time Greene was on the mound he struck out nine Pirates and threw 6.1 shutout innings. Cincinnati’s offense, though, couldn’t do much and Greene got a no decision in what turned out to be a Reds loss.

Greene has reverse splits and has for his career. Right-handed hitters don’t hit for much average against him, but they walk at a good rate and have a .722 OPS against him. Lefties hit just .176 against him, walk at a solid clip, but aren’t hitting for much power against him and only have a .577 OPS against him this year. Not shown below is that he’s pitched worse at home. His ERA in Cincinnati is 4.02 this season and hitters have a .729 OPS against him at Great American Ball Park this year.

Mitch Keller

The last time that Mitch Keller took the mound he dominated the Reds, allowing just two hits in 7.0 shutout innings with seven strikeouts as the Pirates won 1-0.

The splits for Keller are a bit reversed, but they aren’t extreme. Righties hit for a higher average, walk a bit more, and make way more contact. Lefties hit for quite a bit more power and strikeout far more often, but their OPS is only 44 points lower than what right-handed hitters are posting against him. Not shown below is that he’s pitched much worse on the road. He’s still been good outside of Pittsburgh, though, posting a 3.83 ERA on the road.

News and Notes

Nick Lodolo to the IL

The Reds moved Nick Lodolo to the injured list this afternoon to give the blister on his pitching hand time to properly heal. He’s expected to miss the minimum 15 days.

Yosver Zulueta called up from Triple-A

Taking the place on the roster of Lodolo is Yosver Zulueta. He has been in Louisville all season and has a 2.93 ERA, but he’s been much better than that of late. You can read all about the Cuban-born reliever from our piece that we published earlier today.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand out for the year

David Bell told reporters this afternoon that Encarnacion-Strand opted for surgery on his wrist and that it’s expected to end his 2024 season. We’ve got a few more details on that if you want them right here.

Wow, very concerning about the lack of durability from Lodolo. Going IL quite often. Greene excels in this area on the other hand, that’s a good thing. Good to see Bell sticking with JI leading off, he’s swinging a hot bat. Men, the back end of line up looks ridiculous.

    • VaRedsFan

      Lodolo has a blister.
Has nothing to do with durability

      • CincyDo

Huh? Going to IL repeatedly is not a durability issue?

  2. Dennis Westrick

So, another 3-game series that starts with a win! Need to start winning series again! The easiest way to do that would be with a win tonight with HG on the mound!

Hopefully, the offense that we saw last night carries over! God knows, the Reds haven’t supported HG with a lot of runs in the majority of his starts!

Go Reds! Score early! Score often!

  3. Mark A Verticchio

Glad to see what Sam said on the pre-game. He basically questioned whether the Reds were babying these guys or were they just soft. I kind of think it’s a combination of the two. As Sam said the most important ability is availability and some of this batch of Reds players just don’t have that.

  4. Jason T.

Can we please give Hunter some offensive support and score some runs? Please?

  5. Mike Adams

All we need, fans, is for Pirate pitchers to throw more beach balls right down the middle like last night.
If Keller locates his pitches well and moves them in/out and up/down, the Reds will not hit

  6. Dennis Westrick

Just saw on the MLB Network that current Reds manager David (Tinkering) Bell was named as one of the coaches for the 2024 NL Allstar team! Just don’t let him coach the baserunners!

    • VaRedsFan

He was named a month ago when the Reds were in Ariz.

  7. JB

So much for Levi getting another start. I knew he wouldn’t. Bell has to keep his veterans happy.

    • DW

I was also disappointed to not see him in the lineup after last night’s performance. Also would like to see Soto get a start.

      • JB

No idea why Soto is even up. If Bell isn’t going to use him then leave him in the minors to continue to get at bats.

    • Melvin

Sometimes it seems David Bell has no concept of the term “momentum”. smh Tell me again how many series have we won the first game and then lost the series?

    • Ted Alfred

Yep… watching Benson strike out 40% of the time just hasn’t been enough… we need to see more of it. We wouldn’t want to give the kid Jordan who had four really good ab’s in his mlb debut another start because he might actually get hot and that would be bad cuz then Benson’s feelings would be hurt.

    • JB

I thought I seen him throw up on the mound last game and Sadak just verified it.

  8. dimondfvr

Disappointing to see Benson back in the lineup again. Really! What in his 0-21 current at bats, warrants another start?

  9. Dennis Westrick

Well, HG didn’t waste any time getting that first walk out of the way!

  10. Dennis Westrick

Walk followed by a HR! Check!

  11. RedsGettingBetter

Reds killer Reynolds starting early to kill…unbelievable

  12. Mark Moore

Well … I just flipped on the game … I already feel a Clete pre-loading.

Are we the Piggies getting Kicked tonight? I hope not.

Plenty of time to go on a tear.

  13. Dennis Westrick

Only thing missing is for a 30-pitch 1st inning for HG!

      • RedAlert

Prime example of why Greene will NEVER be a so called “Ace “! Absolutely pitiful

  14. Dennis Westrick

Just don’t get it! HG issues his second walk after being ahead in the count 1-2.

  15. Mark Moore

We let Rowdy lumber into 2nd? That worked out well … 😮

  16. Dennis Westrick

Time to switch over to Copa America soccer!

  17. dimondfvr

Unbelievable!! And Cowboy is really upset with Green!

  18. BuzzKutter

A stolen base for one of the slowest men in baseball for another run. Then Hunter is in front of the catcher cutting the ball off. There is no focus here tonight.

  19. RedsGettingBetter

Greene throwing really bad located pitches… Putting the game in a hole in the first inning … So today we’ll see one of those Greene’s bad games apparently

  20. Mark Moore

3-run hole dug … no sweat … amiright?

  21. DHud

That’s an embarrassing run given up

Completely asleep on Tellez at 1st and doesn’t back up throw to the plate

Bell should take Greene into the clubhouse between innings and have some very choice words of encouragement with his young pitcher

    • RedsMonk65

Definitely disappointing. Can’t expect to win if you play like that.

    • Mark Moore

But then Greene wouldn’t “like playing for him” … 😛

  22. JB

Well you got to think Greene is not himself out there after throwing up on the mound from being overheated. From working in the heat for 30 years trust me you are not yourself and feel somewhat weak. He needs to get in the dugout and hydrate and if he thinks he can’t go Bell needs to pull the trigger.

    • Beaufort Red

Please, overheating doesn’t keep Greene from holding the runner on first or backing up the catcher instead of cutting off the throw.

  23. Mark Moore

BB and steal from Jon??? I like that.

    • Mark Moore

And then THAT happened. If his arms aren’t spread eagle, he’s safe.

  24. Pharmer85

Does Greene think he’s so good he doesn’t have to hold base runners? Failure to even look at the slow-footed Tellez cost him a 3rd run.

    • Mark Moore

I believe you get ejected these days for that. At a minimum, you are out.

  25. Dennis Westrick

Another Reds runner thrown out at home! Jeezy Pete! Fire the 3rd base coach!

    • Mark Moore

I believe that play gets called from the dugout. By the time House sees it isn’t a good idea, it’s too late. Besides, India slid “spread eagle”. If his hand is in front of him, he’s probably safe.

    • DHud

I’m not mad about that one tbh

India reads weak high bounce off the bat and the mental clock says you have time (which he did)

Was a bang bang play and a better slide or slight bobble or toss is slightly up 1st base side or C doesn’t get foot completely in front of plate or insert any other number of things and it’s a run

  26. Mark A Verticchio

Lost a run because Candelario can’t hit the ball passed the pitcher, he might be slumping again.

  27. Erik the Red

This one is over and time to walk the dog.

  28. Dennis Westrick

Thanks to our Little League baserunning, Keller gets out of the 1st inning with no runs allowed on only 11 pitches!

  29. Beaufort Red

    Seriously. Moderated for what?

  30. Kevin H

So is it about player safety, or protecting the catcher? Can it be both?

So a throw from infield the catcher can block the plate, however from outfield catcher has to allow a sliding lane. Either its a rule or not. Can’t in my opinion be 50/50

  31. Indy Red Man

Win the first game then zzzzz. Only fireman work 24 on 48 off. HG making small strides this year, but too many crooked number innings

  32. Beaufort Red

The heat doesn’t keep Greene from holding a runner on or cutting off a throw instead of backing up the catcher. That’s sine pretty harsh criticism I know.

    • Mark A Verticchio

It’s not criticism it’s a fact about a bad team with a lot of players that lose concentration and a manager that doesn’t care. This game is lost.

  33. Melvin

No runs given up that inning. Time to score. 🙂

  34. RedsGettingBetter

Greene is struggling with his slider command…

  35. Dennis Westrick

Much better 2nd inning for HG but I’m afraid the damage has been done and is too much to overcome! Soccer it is!

  36. Mark A Verticchio

11 runs last night and they could be shut out tonight.

  37. dimondfvr

Keller hasn’t even reached 20 pitches through 2 innings. He’s making it look real easy.

  38. Melvin

Okay. No runs. Time to hold em again. 🙂

  39. BuzzKutter

An 11 pitch inning followed up by a single digit inning. If they were smacking it okay but a ball hasn’t left the infield.

  40. Dennis Westrick

Eight (8) pitch 2nd inning for Keller! Perfect!

  41. Dennis Westrick

Greene is fooling NO ONE tonight! Pull the plug Bell!

  42. DHud

Martinez should be in the game now

Not next inning, not next batter

    Now

    • BuzzKutter

No worries, he will be at 100 pitches real soon.

  43. LDS

It’s going to be a long night for Reds fans

  44. RedAlert

Ballgame – nice pitching Greene ! Thanks

  45. dimondfvr

Reds are being embarrassed all around! This is unacceptable and nothing will be done!

  46. Indy Red Man

This team. Getting rid of Bell is only a start, but it’s a signal management sees what everyone else sees.

They don’t concentrate enough. They’re not professional enough and they repeat mistakes over and over

  47. Melvin

Greene obviously isn’t feeling well and just doesn’t have it tonight. Still though, there he is still pitching.

  48. VaRedsFan

This is the definition of bad luck.
They have been hitting some very good pitches.

Exit velo on the 5 hits this inning:
    80
    81
    95
    70
    75

    Just random luck folks

  49. Hanawi

Should be Greene’s last inning if he can get out of it. No reason for him to keep going.

  50. Melvin

I guess being down five with the bases loaded and no outs isn’t enough tonight to warrant a pitching change.

  51. BuzzKutter

Am I crazy thinking if he gets out of here only giving up 6 they have a chance?

    • VaRedsFan

      Not really.
Didn’t the Reds lead the Pirates 11-0 last year?
      Our Turn!

  52. Indy Red Man

Took Elly run/over 7.5 so maybe Elly gets a cookie when it’s 10-0

  53. Kevin H

Greene doesn’t have it tonight. This is why the reds can’t win with the current manager. He is so inconsistent in his managing.

  54. Melvin

Only down six. It’s early. Let’s win. 🙂

  55. Dennis Westrick

All we need is a touchdown and the extra point! Where are the Bengals when we need them?

    • Daytonnati

Apparently, at the Paris fashion show 🙂

  56. VaRedsFan

I see the Blue Jays had a 70 pitch inning the other day.
RLN would have broke the internet if the Reds did it.

    • BuzzKutter

Not to mention when the 2 infielders looked at each other on a pop up and it dropped between them.

  57. CincyDo

Lost the game in the first inning.

  58. dimondfvr

Wow. Benson struck out. Who would have thought that would happen?

    • Ryan

Did Larkin really just say that Benson “made an adjustment “?

  59. RedAlert

The fact that Bensin continues to be on roster and lineup is enough justification to fire both Bell and Krall .. RIDICULOUS !!!

    • Melvin

It makes one feel like that tonight at least. That’s for sure.

    • Ted Alfred

I mean you would really think that you would let Jordan start again after the spectacular day he had yesterday..very easily could have been three for four and we seen this Benson movie over and over 100 times. Why can’t you just give the kid a chance and let him play a few games and let Benson sit. I forgot…Bell knows things and he’s protecting Benson’s feelings.

  60. BuzzKutter

I have to keep watching just to make sure they break up this no hitter.

  61. Reddawgs2012

I’m so tired of Reds baseball. I wish I could give it up, but apparently I’m addicted.

  62. Melvin

After watching last nights game, with the FOUR non K good ABs last night from Jordan, knowing that Soto and his .300 ave. hasn’t even played yet, and now watching Benson strike out AGAIN, makes me feel like doing what Greene did on the mound a little while ago. smh

  63. Gpod

Larkin or Sadek couldn’t muster up the guts to heap any major criticism of the lazy play by the Reds to allow Cruz to score …..they are a joke

    • VaRedsFan

TV barely showed a long range replay of it.

    • Melvin

Are you saying that showed poor fundamentals? 😉

    • Oldtimer

      Radio crew on WLW did.

Quoth The Cowboy, “the Reds fell asleep on that one.”

    • Votto4life

I have always admired Barry Larkin. But, his time in the TV booth, has really tempered that admiration.

  64. Melvin

Hold it ump. We want to challenge that pitch…oh forgot.

  65. BuzzKutter

And here I was hoping for a granny slam slam. Still nothing out of the infield.

  66. Melvin

I’d say the “spark” we had last night has left us.

  67. dimondfvr

Bases Loaded, less than two outs, no runs, and Keller continues to toss a no-hitter! Oh My!!!!

    • Dennis Westrick

Maybe the Reds need to be no-hit! Maybe that embarrassment will light a fire under this team!

      • Mark Moore

Maybe a little later, monkeys will fly out of my bu++ 😛

  68. Hanawi

Brutal back to back Ks. Needed to get something across to keep themselves in this game.

  69. Melvin

Greene is battling. I’ll give him that.

  70. Randoxu1

Once again, mental mistakes by the same players, no accountability. This manager is clueless. How Benson is in the starting lineup let alone a major league roster is a complete joke. The owner , the front office don’t care and we shouldn’t either. This is a complete failure from top to bottom. Nepotism at its finest in this organization.

  71. Mark Moore

My “Clete comment” didn’t post (or I failed to complete posting it. Anyway, I dropped a while ago. I fired it up on my laptop for a bit until we loaded the bases and couldn’t convert any of them to even a single run.

    Catch you all tomorrow.

  72. Roger Garrett

Hunter with a stinker tonight but even the guy for the Cubs who many already gave the Cy Young to got hammered for 10 or 11 runs.It happens so move on.Reds hitters have to show some life or take the night off and so far we are seeing them take the night off.Last night showed what this team can do but its on nights like this that you show what the team is really all about

    • Justin T

“Last night showed what this team can do but its on nights like this that you show what the team is really all about”

Best description you can give it.

  73. Indy Red Man

Is Shogo Fraleyami ever going to hit a HR again?

  74. BuzzKutter

Don’t worry Stuey will pick him up.

  75. Gpod

OMG…..I just heard Fairchild is hitting .100 against right handers….OMG…..why is he in the lineup ?????

    • Melvin

…because we can’t try Jordan or Soto (who hit both sides of a pitcher) out there even though Bell has used Winker out there before. smh

  76. Roger Garrett

Bell makes out the lineup. It is what it is.

  77. Dennis Westrick

Can’t say the Reds haven’t had their chances to score tonight! Instead of timely hits, they revert back to the norm, a strikeout or weak infield grounder!

  78. Roger Garrett

Yep 0-6 with RISP and Bucs are 5-7.Looks like Buck will have to take this one for the team tonight. Can’t tell you how bad I hope the Reds can fight back.Character building time for this group and you don’t have to win it just get back in it.

  79. Roger Garrett

Cement mixers at 82 inner half can be hit out and it was.

  80. Melvin

Two on, no outs. Let’s at least get two back.

  81. Dennis Westrick

Didn’t the Pirates overcome a 9-run lead in a game against the Reds late in the season last year?

  82. Melvin

Stephenson showing the “wheels” again with a triple. 🙂 RBI

  83. Roger Garrett

Fraley does know that the other team knows he will swing at the first pitch? For a guy with 1 homer and what 10 runs batted in he may just want to think about it.

    • Melvin

I don’t think they’re going to throw him many fastballs down the middle for a while on the first pitch. lol

  84. Dennis Westrick

That 2-run tater ol’ Buck Farmer gave up in the top of the 5th inning is looking large!

  85. VaRedsFan

I’d call it an OK throw.
Larkin said it was a great throw.
A great throw would have got him.

  86. Beaufort Red

Seriously Barry, a great throw? It was up the 1st base line. Sometimes he’s puzzling at best

  87. Roger Garrett

No choice but to wave the white flag with Buck and the new guy I guess but still have 3 more innings to cover. Can Maile pitch then go back to catch then pitch and go back to catch?Where’s that 3rd catcher when you need him

  88. Roger Garrett

Keller just toyed with Benson and then 94 up and he is done on 3 pitches.Feel for the guy but goodness.

  89. Roger Garrett

Love Will and Stuie but Will against anybody and Stuie against a righty just ain’t a fair fight at all.Sad.

  90. Dennis Westrick

If the Reds bullpen had been able to “hold the fort”, it would be a 2-run game!

  91. Indy Red Man

Benson actually had a little rally late May-early June, but its getting sad at this point. Send the poor guy down already and see if he can get his confidence/swing back.

No rentals for prospects because this team isn’t going anywhere, but I’d always be on the lookout for somebody like Crochet on the WS if they want to deal him. I’d give up Lowder and whoever for that talent and he’s still young

Took a flyer on Benson and took a flyer on Brandon Phillips long ago. Sometimes a guy just needs a fresh start somewhere. Look at Reynoldo Lopez with Atlanta (1.57 era) or what Gausman did after leaving the Reds. Krall needs a bonafide MLB hitting talent with the #2 and then find a few nuggets here and there. Oh and a new manager and a completely different atmosphere with expectations. A manager that can find a team leader so he’s not the only voice pushing the right concepts. That guy was never Votto which another reason I wanted him gone

    • Roger Garrett

Good points Indy.Team still is young enough with some upside

  92. Dennis Westrick

Reds are 3 for 13 with RISP and the Candy Man is 0-4 so far! Not a good combination!

Still have 3 more innings against the Pie-Rats bullpen! Gotta believe!

    • Oldtimer

Pirates. Third graders might think Pie-Rats is funny but adults shouldn’t.

  93. Roger Garrett

Yeah they were short I am sure so if its up to Buck and the new guy well it ain’t liable to happen. What we need now is to cover 3 innings with as few pitches as possible.I do like the new guy and his velocity.Pitchers with high 90’s gas always plays if they can throw it over the plate.

  94. Roger Garrett

Good job young man.Do you have another inning in you?

  95. Roger Garrett

Guess he will try.Hope it works out for him.Guess he goes back down later in the week.

  96. Roger Garrett

That is a great job by a rookie and may turn out to be the 3 biggest innings any Red pitches this year.Resets the pen and gives up hope tomorrow and against the Cards,

  97. Roger Garrett

Tough love for Benson I guess but looks more like he is being punished and thats wrong.Guys on this team stumble and bumble through games and continue to do it so where is the tough love for them.

  98. Dennis Westrick

Benson with another 3-strikeout night! He’s got to go (to AAA)!

  99. Melvin

Let’s face it gentlemen when it comes to our beloved Reds. This organization, when it comes to winning, doesn’t know what the crap they’re doing. The fact the Benson is still on the 26 man roster, much less still playing, is pure evidence.

    • Roger Garrett

Have to agree with the winning part and will add that they ain’t doing the player any favors either. They IMO punished Barrero in a similar way coming off the injury he had.Don’t like whats going on at all with Benson. Its wrong on all fronts.

  100. Roger Garrett

The Rook and the vet cover 4 innings on 57 pitches which is just exactly what the Reds needed.Great job.

  101. Roger Garrett

India on base all 4 times tonight with 2 walks and 2 hits.

    • RedsMonk65

Also a HBP — so on base all five times. He has been solid lately. Good to see. Lately, India and EDLC have provided a nice 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup.

  102. Melvin

Two on, no outs. Now we just need five runs. 🙂

    • Melvin

DP hit into by Candy. Five runs not likely. Did get one.

  103. CincyDo

Need a hit from Cande here to make things interesting. EDLC and JI have done their job.

  104. CincyDo

Darn it, Cande picked a bad time to have a bad game. Oh well

    • west larry

That’s three or four consecutive bad games. He has gone from red hot to ice cold India and EDLC are red hot now. Bensen? he’s been awful most of the year. Hitting under .190 now. hen do we send him down to triple A?

  105. Roger Garrett

Hunter and Candy have been bright spots in a not so bright season so despite the stinkers tonight they get a pass from me.Reds fought back, didn’t roll over and I like it.Said it down 6-0 early its these type pf games that show what a team is made of and its was a good night.GO REDS

  106. RedsMonk65

Tough loss. Greene just did not have it (whether due to illness or whatever). Bullpen beyond Farmer held up fairly well–especially the new guy. Great game by India. Good games for EDLC and Steer. Just too little too late. Can still take the series in the get-a-way game tomorrow.
