Carson Spiers

A week ago the Reds lost 4-1 to the Pirates and Spiers gave up all four of those runs in 6.0 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. It was his first start in the big leagues this season – though he had been starting while in Triple-A.

The sample size in the big leagues is not all that big for Spiers this season. He’s faced lefties more than righties and they’ve found success against him, posting a .795 OPS made up mostly of singles. Right-handed hitters aren’t doing much of anything against him, posting a .554 OPS this year. If we include his time in the minors in 2024 then things swing in favor of him against lefties, where they’ve got an OPS of .579 compared to a .635 OPS against him from righties.

Bailey Falter

Not even a full week ago Falter held the Reds to two runs in 7.0 innings. That wasn’t good enough on the day, though, as he took the loss since the Pirates only scored one run.

This season the splits aren’t very big for Falter, but hitters are getting to them quite differently. Righties hold a 14 point OPS advantage over lefties, but they hit for a much lower average, walk significantly more, make a lot more contact, and hit for more power. Left-handed hitters don’t face him much but when they do they rarely walk and don’t hit for much power, but so far in the year they are hitting .261 against him. For his career, lefties hold an advantage against him across the board – better average, on-base, and slugging.

News and Notes

TJ Friedl to the IL, Levi Jordan called up

Cincinnati made a set of roster moves today before the game against Pittsburgh. TJ Friedl’s heading to the injured list as his hamstring just isn’t good enough to continue playing. The team is calling up Levi Jordan from Triple-A where he was hitting .302 through 54 games. We wrote about the move earlier today when it was announced and you can read more about both moves here if you’d like.

I like India leading off. Wish David would an opener Not digging Jordan in right. I hate losing but losing to Pittsburgh always hurt Let’s get a win. Go Reds

    • Ted Alfred

Yep…India 3-4 leading off….who knew? Not surprising…he’s always been most comfortable hitting at the top of the order.

  2. CI3J

It’s pretty wild to think this Reds team has had a 8 game losing streak AND a 7 game winning streak in one season… And that season isn’t halfway over yet.

Still, since June 10th, the Reds are 4-8. They have the 23rd worst record in all of MLB. Granted, a lot of teams are bunched together within a few games of each other, but the Reds have been trending in the wrong direction for a while now.

If they are going to salvage this season, they have to start beating teams like the Pirates.

    • LDS

Run differential is another of those hilarious stats. It doesn’t do a great job of accounting for blowouts. For example, open the season with a 10 run victory and lose the next eight games by a rub each. After nine games the team is 1-8 with a positive run differential. Hence, its value is suspect.

  3. Eddiek957

Did anyone see the mlb trade rumors Sunday night chat? The moderator said he expects the Reds to win more because of their run differential. Sure hope this is just a bad stretch

  4. Dennis Westrick

I am at a nexus point in this season! A part of me wants the Reds to lose their remaining games this month and beyond and maybe that will enact change by the Reds FO which should include a wholesale change in the field manager AND coaches!

Another part of me is hopeful the Reds can turn it around by being more productive at the plate, reduce the errors in the field AND eliminate the silly TOOTBLANs. i believe we have a good core of SPs and an above average bullpen when used wisely!

The reality is the Reds still have a longshot at winning the NL Central Division and an even better chance of securing one of the 3 NL WC spots!

The Reds have lost the last 3 series after winning the first game of each of those series! It’s time for that trend to change!

Cautiously hopeful for a win tonight against the Pie-Rats! Go Reds!

    • Doc

That has been their season-long trend, interrupted only by a few series wins. Weren’t they 1-11 out of the gate in series in which they won the first game. Then won a handful, now back to old patterns.

    • Ted Alfred

Yep…100% with you. Really want a new manager because I have no faith in David Bell to ever take this team anywhere that matters… but at the same time it’s hard not to root for them to somehow turn it around and make the summer more interesting.

  5. Old-school

This next week sorta feels like that stretch near Memorial Day when they were 10 under .500 and the season could go off the rails beyond hope. 7 games against the Pirates and Cards and in last place and only ahead of 3 teams in the WC race- marlins, Rockies, and Giants.

I dont buy the “they’re still close to the WC notion”. I want to see good baseball and they arent playing good baseball. There offense is a K fest with no hitting for avg or getting on base or Power except Elly and Candy. They play slop defense, Little League reckless stupidity on the bases. terrible baseball situational awareness across the board. Friedl hurt again, Marte isnt close, CES isnt close, Benson is 0-21 and hitting .196 with a K % 40%. Reds are back to Espinal and Fairchild playing regularly and the worst productivity in MLB at DH with Martini still getting reps against righties. The manager oversees all this slop and enables it.

See what we get next 7 games against Nl Central foes. Biggest stretch of the season.

  6. Mark Moore

Hoping for the best. Would love to see us break the pattern of “1 of 3 for the series”. I noted on another thread that this feels like a make-or-break series for me.

    Off we go …

  7. Mark Moore

OK … battled a little bit but got them out. Nice inning from Spiers. I’m thinking this is his last start for a while and Ashcraft will take his spot (with an interim BP arm in the middle doing the shuttle shuffle).

  8. Melvin

NO runs given up first inning. Good thing. 🙂

    • Melvin

He’s learning how to foul off pitches to stay alive. Wish more would watch and learn.

      • Melvin

Although he Kd it took 12 pitches to do it.

    • Mark Moore

Well … at least he ran Falter’s pitch count up a bit.

  9. RedsGettingBetter

CAndy getting 12 pitches is at least a good AB despite the K

  10. Old-school

Tough sun but Fairchild never saw that ball. Good thing Elly got out to short CF. Steer with the nice catch in the sun.

  11. Mark Moore

An even better 2nd for Spiers. That sun is brutal, especially in LF for Steer.

  12. Mark Moore

So Stewie is our #6 hitter tonight … sounds about right … 😮

    • Melvin

Our offense isn’t inspiring tonight. Hope it picks up.

  13. RedsGettingBetter

Falter is pounding the zone, has thrown 26 strikes out of 33 pitches but the Reds can’t hit them to nobody’s land

  14. Mark Moore

And we get an errant throw from Espinal.

      • Melvin

        .59 per game

        Atlanta 1st .40 per game

      • Mark Moore

Looked like he had time to square himself.

    • Jason Franklin

I think 3b is jinxed for any Reds player there. They really need to get Marte back up as soon as they can after the suspension.

  15. Mark Moore

Runs are going to be a rare commodity tonight. That one is unearned, but it still counts. Better to pitch around Reynolds.

  16. Melvin

Error didn’t help. Only gave up one. Time to score.

  17. RedsGettingBetter

The ump squeezed and Reynolds capitalizes later… Reynolds is one of the most dangerous Reds killer….

  18. Melvin

Not a bad start by Jordan getting robbed. 🙂

  19. Jason Franklin

I know this is obvious, but man, it stinks have 4 backups starting games for the team. No wonder the offense is so timid. At least they haven’t struckout much tonight. Little victories..

    • Mark A Verticchio

You’re right after the 5th batter this Reds line up is AAA at best. They will not score much if any tonight.

    • Melvin

I’m ready to try Soto for Espinal. .276 ave. .348 OBP against lefties.

      • Jason Franklin

I don’t understand what’s wrong with Bell tonight. He actually started Jordan right off the bat! It’s a miracle! Now, Soto will probably not get a start for week. Just kidding, I hope.

  20. Old-school

For all the Elly strikes out too much(he does) and Elly makes too many errors(he does) he’s our best player and it’s not close. Hes got 3.1 fWAR and it’s not even the AS break.

For all the movie Elly off SS, there’s literally no one to put there in late June of 2024 so thats just noise. McLain is 2 months away at best.

Elly is on pace for Joey votto 2017 fWAR 6.2.

  21. Roger Garrett

Reds can’t hit 90/91 and still trying to pull everything accept Tyler. No clue how to hit against anybody throwing left handed.Hard stuff in slow stuff away its hard to watch this bunch.

  22. Gpod

another listless performance by the reds so far….nothing new

  23. Melvin

Cool to see Jordan’s family here from Seattle.

  24. Melvin

Spiers looking like a good pitcher.

    • Red Thunder

Hopefully, he can get into the 6th inning tonight, Big +

    • Harry Stoner

I’ve liked what I’ve seen in Spiers.
Nice pitch mix and seems to have a plan.
Showing true growth since last season.

He’s got to realize this is a real career opportunity: a hole in the starting rotation on a floundering team.

Step up, son, and the big paychecks are ahead.

    • DaveCT

Spiers really started grooving mid season last year at AA. He was especially fun to watch, as he just hard core competes, like Sonny Gray (tho different styles). Four pitches, thrown for strikes, and fearless. This guy has ML career written sll over.

  25. Melvin

Come on guys. Show some life. You’re getting good pitching. Maybe we can take up a collection to pay David Bell to throw a base. 😀

  26. Mark Moore

Bizzarro/Flex-O Zone on full display once again.

    But Elly overcomes it.

    C’mon, Candyman!!!

    • Mark Moore

Did your job and Steer seals the deal. Cowboy says he’s 6 for 10 against Falter. Timely hit.

  27. Melvin

Good job by Candy to move the runners up. 🙂

  28. Melvin

…and Steer doubles them in. Good baseball. 🙂

  29. Old-school

    What the heck was that?
India solid hit, Elly solid hit, candy moves them over and Steer double them in!

    • Jason Franklin

That’s what I was wondering. I thought it was an actually fundamentally sound team up for a second.

      • Old-school

Ok. Stephenson infield single…cant lose this game now. thats a unicorn.

  30. Jason Franklin

Probably not a good pitch there by Falter. A get ahead curveball can really come back to hurt you. Maybe he ‘faultered’ in his decision. Har.

  31. RedAlert

    That’s what I’m talkin’ bout ! Nice !

  32. DaveCT

“Stephenson legs out an infield hit!”

Future “on this day in history’ story.

  33. Mark Moore

    OK, that worked.

Cowboy continues to openly comment about the poor strike zone consistency from the Chumpires.

  34. Melvin

Fairchild doubles two more in. We’re not dead! 🙂

  35. Old-school

It’s time to Clete folks in a good way…Remember this inning and sleep well!

  36. Harry Stoner

Steer’s BA is flat but he remains productive.

On track for another 35 doubles and 90+ rbis.

Keep your ‘advanced metrics’ for contract negotiations.

    Drive in runs.
    Score runs.

Steer driving in EDLC is what is supposed to be happening nightly.

    • Jason Franklin

He’s also pretty good at first base and average in left field and those are both new spots for him. Plus, he adds in some pretty good speed/baserunning, too. I think he will start cutting back on the k’s and hopefully gets some more pop back.

  37. Mark Moore

    What did we just witness????

Falter watches rather than backs up and Stewie earns himself 3rd.

  38. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds chased Falter in this inning… very good!

    • Mark Moore

And he guarantees we turn the lineup over.

  39. Melvin

Sac fly for Jordan. More good baseball. 🙂

    • Melvin

      Jordan so far:

      Robbed of a hit.
      Sac fly.
      No Ks.
      Just saying.

  40. Old-school

And a sac fly productive out from the new guy? Let’s show this inning in future Rain delays!

    • Roger Garrett

Now you just had to know what was going to happen when Spiers went back out to the mound.

  41. DW

That was fun! A big inning like that has been so rare from the offense this year.

  42. Beaufort Red

Good things generally happen when people don’t strikeout. Quite the revelation.

  43. RedsGettingBetter

Levi Jordan got his career first RBI before his first career single….
By the way, another ump calling against Reds…. What is happening to those guys?

  44. Old-school

FWIW, Jon India has a .357 OBP. In this season of depressed hitting, thats amazing. New lead off guy again for the 5th time with Friedl hurt.

      • Ted Alfred

Yep…called for that 6 weeks ago when Friedl came off the DL the first time

  45. Jason Franklin

Come on Spiers. This is what we get for getting our hopes up. :/

  46. Mark Moore

Bike Helmets. Give up the run and get the outs.

    • Mark Moore

I didn’t mean give up the run without getting an out … 😮

  47. Roger Garrett

You can’t make this type of stuff up.Three straight hits by the Bucs.

  48. Roger Garrett

Bell has to be asleep to allow Spiers to face Reynolds.

  49. Roger Garrett

Just can’t believe Bell still has a job as manager of this team.

  50. Melvin

Did that seem like a slow turn there on that double play try?

      • Melvin

Not to pick on him but smoothness is not the best asset for EDLC.

  51. RedAlert

Need to get Ashcraft back up here and put
    Speirs the pen

  52. Old-school

Did Jon Sadak really just say Fernando Cruz warming in the bullpen….no relation to O’Neill Cruz.

  53. Dennis Westrick

Why is Spiers still in the game?

  54. Melvin

Well. Still up two after that. Thankfully. 🙂

  55. JB

Good job Spiers. If you don’t leave I guy in to get out of his own mess , he will never learn .

    • RedAlert

Bell got lucky … left him in about 3 batters too long

      • JB

And he would have never learned how to get out of his mess. Will help him on his next outing.

      • RedAlert

I certainly understand what you’re saying JB … but he wasn’t fooling anybody and I have ZERO confidence in Bell’s ability to know when to make a bullpen move … he’s awful at it and has proven it time and time and time again

  56. Roger Garrett

Please please show Bell the door even if its to the board room.

  57. RedsGettingBetter

India’s hit hard at 108.7 and 107 tonight

  58. Melvin

Another good start this inning. 🙂

  59. Dennis Westrick

If Bell sends Spiers out to start the 6th inning, I’m afraid my head explode!

  60. Mark Moore

Y’all a bit happier with this situation? I know I am.

  61. Old-school

Let’s just roll with India,Elly, candy Steer Stephenson 1-2-3-4-5 for the next few weeks.

    • JB

Exactly and when Friedl comes back put him at 2 and move everybody down one.

    • Roger Garrett

Yeah and throw in CES Marte and Little Mac and we have what I thougt we may have and still could but probably not until next year.

    • Ted Alfred

Hahahaha…lucky if it’s the same for tomorrow’s game

  62. RedsGettingBetter

    CAndy don’t like to walk

  63. Roger Garrett

Yep for sure.Bucs still have a secret weapon though and he is in the Reds dugout.

  64. Old-school

This top of the order doing its job tonight. Well done !

  65. Melvin

Steer with another RBI. Is this a fun game or what? 🙂

  66. Melvin

TS hit it very hard. Just right at the pitcher unfortunately .

  67. RedlegScott

Spiers in a short leash, no doubt.

  68. JB

It’s a cross your fingers moment every time there is a throw to first. Candy scares the heck out of me.

  69. Melvin

Hard to complain too much about Spiers tonight.

    • JB

Nope he has done a nice job. He is exactly what a 5th starter is.

    • RedlegScott

Good stat line. Couldnt ask for much more. Likely finished at 93. Glad Bell left him in.

    • Harry Stoner

Solid performance for the unheralded rookie.

Kudos to Bell for leaving him in to work his way out of the 5th.
      Or maybe Bell was dozing.
Came back well in the 6th.

Not much more you can ask for.

Bright future if the Reds don’t jag him around.

  70. Mark Moore

And Spiers gives us a solid 6 innings and we hold the lead. All good things.

    • Mark Moore

I thought that first run was unearned due to the error.

      • DaveCT

“Edward Olivares singles on a ground ball to third baseman Santiago Espinal. Edward Olivares to 2nd. Edward Olivares advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by third baseman Santiago Espinal.”

        Fly out.

“Andrew McCutchen singles on a ground ball to third baseman Santiago Espinal. Edward Olivares to 3rd.”

“Bryan Reynolds singles on a line drive to right fielder Levi Jordan. Edward Olivares scores. Andrew McCutchen to 3rd.”

Is the assumption that Oliveres goes to third on McCutchen’s hit and scores on the Reynolds hit?

Or that Oliveres scores from 2B (where McCutchen does not)?

  71. Beaufort Red

Bell isn’t the greatest but thank goodness Dennis Westrick isn’t the manager. Hope your exploding head didn’t hurt too much.

  72. RedsGettingBetter

    Quality start by Spiers… I guess he’s done…

  73. Beaufort Red

Dennis, did your exploding head hurt?

  74. Melvin

JORDAN! Double off the wall! Firs big league hit! 😀

    • Melvin

…and first run!!! Got to feel good for that family. 😀

  75. Mark Moore

First RBI and First HIt … quite a night for the family and him.

    And add a run scored.

  76. RedsGettingBetter

    Jordan with a run, double and a RBI….nice debut…

  77. Roger Garrett

Bad decision and an excellent result.Great job by Spiers.

  78. Melvin

India doubles in another run. 🙂 This is good. 😉

  79. Mark Moore

Big night for Jon. He likey leading off spot.

  80. Old-school

Ok reds fans…this is the Reds official rain delay video the rest of 2024. It is the Pirates but exactly…this is what you do the Pirates.

    Elly 600 feet!

  81. RedsGettingBetter

    Ok, it’s an offensive explosion!

  82. RedlegScott

The Pirates have thrown four pitchers at the Reds and our guys have gotten to all of them. Offense coming to life or flash in the pan? One game not enough to tell.

  83. Mark Moore

Oh he CRUSHED that one … 😮

Cowboy says the Riverboat bathroom door.

    • Melvin

In case some can’t watch it landed literally on the boat in CF.

      • Roger Garrett

Dunn hit some shots and for us old guys so did Foster and Griffey Jr but the boat is uncharted waters I believe.

  84. Dennis Westrick

Call the FBI! Somebody kidnapped my Reds team!

  85. DHud

Idk if I’ve ever seen a baseball hit that far at GABP

    • Melvin

Elly could actually win a Toyota for someone some day. 🙂

    • Votto4life

And yet he was referred to as “Sombrero Sam” here just the other day.

      • Kevin H

Heck a few others suggested Trade De La Cruz, and comparing him to Aquino and Stubbs.

  86. RedlegScott

Why bring in Cruz w an 8-run lead? Does he need work? Why not one of the weaker relievers and save Cruz for tomorrow?

    • Melvin

Me doesn’t know. 🙂 Perfect time for Sims it would seem.

    • Roger Garrett

Already around 20 pitches.Won’t see him tomorrow

  87. Kevin H

De La Cruz is a generational talent, and will only get better. So fun to watch

  88. RedsGettingBetter

Fernando Cruz in a 11-3 game? Is he needed? I don’t think so…

    • Melvin

David Bell must REALLY want to win this game. :D…and Cruz gives up a two run homer anyway.

  89. Melvin

Come on Cruz. Concentrate. Sims is warming up. 🙂

  90. Melvin

Alright. Only six more outs to go. Let’s score some more runs too. 🙂

  91. RedsGettingBetter

25 pitches by Cruz today. I can’t understand this move really….

  92. MBS

Nice night for Spiers, and he now has back to back 6 inning performances.

Even if Ashcraft kicks him out of the rotation, hopefully the Reds keep him up in a long man role. He’s definitely one of the best 13 pitchers we have.

  93. Roger Garrett

Nope cause he left Spiers in to lose it and he didn’t.Cruz is in because it was in the script that he follow Spiers.Twenty five pitches and no way for tomorrow and probably not Wednesday either.Velo was down from the first 4 seamer he threw.

  94. Dennis Westrick

Sorry! Bell is clueless when it comes to knowing when to take a SP out of the game, what RP to use in which inning, etc.! No lead is safe when Bell is mismanaging!

  95. Roger Garrett

Brew Crew don’t look now but here comes the Cardinals.Six plus from Lance home run Lynn and up 4-1 at home in the 7th.

  96. Dennis Westrick

Hilarious! Sims just had to walk a batter with 2 outs! It’s in the script for Reds BP pitchers don’t you know!

  97. Ted Alfred

I sure hope Jordan is back in the lineup tomorrow. Great debut at the plate…lets keep it going and let Benson sit a few games. Unfortunately knowing David Bell like we do you know Benson will be back in the lineup tomorrow night because he won’t want to hurt his feelings…sheesh.

    • Melvin

We can only hope. Maybe Soto will play too. 🙂

  98. Dennis Westrick

Wilson is obviously NOT a closer!

  99. Ted Alfred

What is Wilson doing throwing all these breaking balls on 2-2 and 3-2 counts up six runs with two outs in the 9th. Seriously

    • Ted Alfred

And thank God they’re hitter just struckout on a very low breaking Ball 4…which would have put the tying run in the on Deck Circle…yikes.

      These Redlegs are never boring

  100. Mark Moore

That was a round about way to get free pizza … but the deed is done.

Elly or Levi with Day tonight? I’d vote for both.

  101. Dennis Westrick

Never easy with this Reds bullpen!

  102. Moon

And game one of the battle for the bottom goes to the Reds!

  103. Roger Garrett

Pen will be toast by the time the Cardinals arrive.Cruz nope for tomorrow as is Wilson and Sims and probably Suter.Wonder about Buck cause kind of figured we would see him but it will work out.Great win tonight and Spiers fought through 6 which was
    just great.GO REDS
