Starting Pitchers

The Reds Hunter Greene is scheduled to go against Mitch Keller for the Pirates in a battle of righthanders.

Hunter Greene

Hunter Greene makes his 15th start of the season today. This has been a season of change for Greene. He has dialed his fastball back a couple of MPH (but still is averaging 98 with it), reduced the use of slider, and, introduced a split finger fastball which has become his needed “third pitch” and de facto change up. He has also flashed a curve to go along with his slider. While right handed hitters are still giving him some problems with both OBP and Slugging outcomes, overall Greene appears to be maturing into his top of the rotation role.

Greene is 5-1 with 4 no decisions in his last 10 starts.  The team is 5-5 over that span having lost all of Greene’s no decision starts in that 10 game stretch.

Mitch Keller

Mitch Keller is also a pitcher who like Hunter Greene appears to be stepping up his game this year. He lacks the overpowering fastball Greene has but instead is getting the job done with four different pitches he throws at least 10% of the time. Again much like Greene, right hand hitters have clearly better OBP and slugging results than left hand hitters against him (Are you listening David Bell??).

Keller has personally notched wins in 4 of his last 5 starts and is 8-4 on the season with just 2 no decision starts. As a team, the Pirates are 9-5 in Keller’s starts.

The Reds pen needed to  cover just 2 innings Tuesday thanks to Nick Lodolo’s 7 inning start. Fernando Cruz and Alexis Diaz each went an inning using just 11 and 13 pitches respectively. Neither had pitched since Friday. Both should be available today along with the rest of the Reds bullpen contingent.

The Pirates bullpen also had to cover just 2 innings Tuesday and used 2 pitchers. Dennis Santana required 18 pitches for his inning of work and may be questionable due to the quick turnaround. Otherwise everyone should be available for the Pirates.

  1. duke

Looking forward to seeing India at the top of the order.

  2. TJ

I’m not an Espinal hater. I don’t get to see many games, but listen on Sirius. Brantley seems to love his glove. Lately, Espinal seems to have made contact and put the ball in play.

    • Rick

His defense is solid. I like him as the 26th man. Our problem is that we have to many 26th man production from several guys.

  3. VaRedsFan

I’d rather have Ty in there. Especially since he stung the ball 3 out of 4 times last night.
Having said that he is 1-12 with 6 Ks vs Keller.
Bring him in later in the game for 2 AB’s

    India is 5-12 vs. Keller

    • Melvin

“I’d rather have Ty in there. Especially since he stung the ball 3 out of 4 times last night.”

Well we wouldn’t want a hot hitter to get too hot would we? That wouldn’t be fair. Need to cool him down an little. 😉

      • Melvin

Afterall, our offense is hitting on all cylinders anyway. 😀

    • Rick

He should be playing especially with all of our injuries.
      Throw away game from Bell.

    • Melvin

“Bring him in later in the game for 2 AB’s”

I can understand your point but we need to realize as soon as we do that our bench is empty. There would be NO ONE for emergencies the rest of the game.

      • VaRedsFan

I’d assume any of the other 3 could be used in case of emergency

      • Melvin

Maybe Martini can run but the other two have leg injuries.

  4. Mark Moore

Unless my math is way off, our one and only one available bench player is the starting catcher who didn’t start last night. That certainly makes sense. Hard to believe Luke was penciled (or inked) into Mr. Bell’s line-up 2x in a row a week or so ago (what most of us think is his regular practice of making up the line-up mix). Could be a short day for me. Client meeting at 3PM, but schedule clear other than that. Hope we can fill it with productive baseball from this largely AAAA mix.

Of we go with the hope we can Kick the Pie-Rat Piggies into one of the Three Rivers and get out of town.

    • Jim Walker

Wouldn’t want to put the 26th man on the roster (Martini) on the IL and lose him past the eligibility date for Marte??? 😉

      • Melvin

No way. Martini is way too valuable to us considering the way he’s been carrying us. 😉

      • JB

I pointed out last night that Friedl,Candy and Martini could be out this game. We all knew that the Reds would go with a short bench. They might be the dumbest team in baseball.

    • Dennis Westrick

Me too, Mark! At work this today with a meeting from 2 to 3 that I hope ends early!

  5. Dennis Westrick

Couldn’t hardly sleep last night wondering what Bell’s lineup would look like for this final game of the road trip! No Ty Steve as usual (sigh!) Benson (See the ball, be the ball) batting 6th seems odd. Who knows with this team!

Sad to hear about the passing of Willie Mays! I actually got to see him play at Riverfron Stadium when he was with the Mets later in his career! Great man! Great ballplayer!

As always, Go Reds! Score early! Score often!

    • Melvin

“Couldn’t hardly sleep last night wondering what Bell’s lineup would look like for this final game of the road trip!”

    • Jim Walker

I was in my 20’s by the time Willie retired; but, I do not recall ever seeing him in person.

  6. Optimist

This is the point of the season to NOT play with a short bench. Use the 10-day IL – time for Soto to come up, and bring Dunn back – think 2 weeks ahead and think of late August and who is worn out. Dunn only had 10 ABs, and Soto should get a two week look.

Amazingly, considering team history, the pitching staff seems to be set up nicely.

    • Jim Walker

I think one of the interesting decisions for the Reds is whether they bring Marte up as soon as he eligible or choose to let him stay at AAA through the All Star break. Unless he is absolutely on fire come June 27, it might make sense to option him to AAA and let him stay there until the break.

      • Melvin

I don’t understand why they would do that if he can hit any at all.

      • Optimist

True – and I am thinking Soto/Dunn now, put whomever on the short IL, and set up Marte to return in 3-4 weeks, unless he simply flops in AAA – so far he looks OK, needs to get the BB/K in line.

Also, Elly needs a break and/or stick him at 3b for a few games until Marte returns.

      • DaveCT

My question, Jim, is why does optioning Marte make sense ( and it makes total sense to me).

Marte has been held accountable by MLB for, in essence, hurting the game. But we don’t know if he has been held accountable by the club and/or by his teammates for hurting the team.

This is why I would not be surprised at all if he were to be optioned, perhaps even longer than the all star break.

  7. Mark A Verticchio

One of the worst line ups the Reds have put on the field in my over 50 years as a fan. Not playing Stephenson is almost criminal, I don’t care what he has done against Keller in the past. With only one bench player available something needs to be done. Do your job Krall.

    • Melvin

Naw. He’s comfortable. Wouldn’t want to make any even semi tough decisions. 😉

  8. old-school

anyone see the parlay special yet for today or better yet …..any suggestions?

I’ll go with Mitch Keller 8k’s, a Luke Maile GIDP and 1 Reds Tootblan.

    • Jim Walker

The Reds should have a promotion that folks at GAPB for a game get a free ticket for another game anytime they do not have a TOOTBLAN at home. 😉 😉

      • Melvin

The way the team has been playing I doubt they’d be in danger of losing too much money on tickets. haha

      • old-school

I’d make it more fun. Incentivize the Tootblan.

1 Tootblan and ticket holders get a free David bell bobblehead on the way out of the game.
2 Tootblans they get a free UDF chocolate sundae with proof of a game ticket.

That would be fun late in the game, reds runner on base and the crowd cheering for the chocolate sundae.

      • Dennis Westrick

Based upon the TOOTBLAN rate so far this season, that promotion would bankrupt the team!

      • Melvin

“Based upon the TOOTBLAN rate so far this season, that promotion would bankrupt the team!”

      • Longtimefan

They tout the Reds as a great basestealing team but they neglect to mention all of the tootblans that they seem to have almost daily. They have alot of overall speed but they mostly are horrible baserunners. They have to be at or near the top in all of baseball in tootblans. That can really crush a team that is mostly weak offensively to lose runners on the bases.

  9. Jason Franklin

I wouldn’t be surprised that at least two of these guys hit the IL tomorrow or after the game today and that (hopefully) replacements are brought up tomorrow before Friday’s game. The front office for the Reds is questionable at times.

    • Jim Walker

Dr Bell was telling anyone who wanted to listen last night that he didn’t think Candy or Friedl would need IL time 😉

    • Melvin

When you have the DH and carrying 13 pitchers you’re already playing with a short bench. You can’t afford to have three guys who can’t play especially when one of them is basically your 26th man.

  10. Kevin H

So the consensus is Reds have 1 bench player available? Let’s hope that isn’t the case.

Reds front office depended on the young guys this season and it has come back to haunt in a way. No back up plans for McLain, Marte, and or DH spot not to mention CES.

Yet Stephenson on the bench today.

    • Mark Moore

Yep. TySteve is the lone bench player. That’s even more ridiculous than starting him at DH with Maile catching. It boggles the mind.

Just tuned into the end of the Brian G. and Sam LeCure pre-game. No real insight there.

      • Melvin

That wouldn’t bother me so much. Maihle did get two hits last night so both catchers hit well the game before. Fraley could play in place of Benson.

  11. Dennis Westrick

All I ask of HG today is limit the WALKS and keep the pitch count low! Kinda like Lodolo did last night! Pretty please!

  12. Rick

I remember the game that Willie May’s kind of climbed over Bobby Bonds to rob Johnny Bench in LC field in SF.

    • Coach Gates

Bobby Tolan hit the ball according to Dr. Google

  13. Mark A Verticchio

They should have a David Bell bobble head day and see what the crowd would be.

    • Mark Moore

I’m not sure eBay supports an after-market sale where the seller pays the buyer.

      • Jim Walker

I had a friend who one time had a person send him a $1K check for a $50 item and asked him to forward the other $950 to someone else who was selling him an item for $950 😉

My friend recognized it as one of the common scams back then. He took the check to his bank to report it. The bank contacted him later and said the check was actually against a valid account but the signature was forged. So, I guess if my friend had cashed it and sent the money on (or kept it) he would have been an accessory to fraud and forgery.

    • Melvin

haha 😀 I’m sure all the people from Indy like me would make a special trip for sure.

  14. Redsfan4life

Not sure why some of you even waste you’re time watching. All you do is complain non stop. Baseball is supposed to be fun and entertaining. Obviously some here aren’t entertained. Life is too short to waste time on something if you don’t enjoy it.
Something to think about anyway. Have a good day and Go REDS!

  15. Bet on Red

I thought keller wasn’t that good

  16. JB

I’m guessing if the Reds had 5 guys hurt they would let the pitcher bat before putting somebody on the IL. They are that stupid. We pick on the players for their terrible fundamentals but it’s not like they have anything to look up to in the manager and Front Office.

  17. Melvin

Let’s somehow win anyway today. 🙂

    • JB

Hunter is going to have to be near perfect.

      • Melvin

We still have to score one run. We’ll see. 😉

  18. LDS

One pathetic lineup. And with 3 out due to injuries, sitting Stephenson for Maile is simply stupid. So is carrying 3 injuries, put them on the injured list. Option Martini back to Louisville, who cares. Krall and the FO are grossly negligent in managing the operation.

    • JB

It’s a holiday today so the Front office has the day off. They are all at the beach counting their money.

  19. Mark Moore

Bit of weirdness … WLW audio is just a tad out of sync. So I opened a radio-only window and muted the video feed. Pretty good now and it’s like the old days where you get “a weird commercial experience”.

    Just focus, Hunter.

    • Mark Moore

That would be the opposite of “focus” …

      • Mark Moore

I guess he had to tie Nick for team HBP.

  20. JB

Sadak just said the Pirates were a top heavy lineup. Wonder what he would call the Reds lineup if he wasn’t kissing the Front Office butt.

  21. Dennis Westrick

A 15-pitch 1st inning for HG! Good start! My fear is that HD will have to throw a shutout today unless that awesome Reds batting lineup soes something unexpected!

  22. Melvin

Benson could prove me wrong and have a great day. Hope so.

    • JB

You shouldn’t be drinking this early.

      • Melvin

Wish I could use that for an excuse but I don’t drink. lol 😀

  23. RedAlert

How is Benson still on this major league
    roster ….. he is BRUTAL

  24. old-school

My Mitch Keller 8K’s hypothetical parlay looking strong.
I was going to go with the Benson hat trick 3K’s but that’s too easy.
The Tootblan and Luke Maile GIDP might be difficult. Actually have to get on base for those.

Lot of complaining about Reds being short-handed today but its get away day and only 8 innings for a loss. 6 down 21 to go.

  25. Mark A Verticchio

I agree Benson needs to be sent down for everybody’s good, most of all his. His head is just not in the game.

  26. Mark Moore

Realizing this would go against us … how in the heck does the Chumpire miss that one???

    • Mark Moore

At least HG now has the team lead again … 😮

  27. Melvin

Yeah. Definitely a FOUL ball. hahaha 😉

  28. JB

They should have the winner of the 50/50 drawing get to umpire one inning. Can’t get any worse.

  29. Mark Moore

Bit of an ole’ turn by India, no?

  30. Melvin

Cowboy – “India took an extra two steps. That’s why you don’t get a double play.”

We’re not good at that. Should be out of the inning. Also runs up the pitch count Dennis.

    • Melvin

India’s best position is 1B. I’d rather have Steer at 2B than India.

  31. Mark Moore

Hunter to Jon … “OK, then. I’ll do it myself.”

  32. Pharmer85

Again, Reds unable to turn a double play. Good on HG that it didn’t cost them….this time.

  33. VaRedsFan

Brantley blaming India for making a 1 handed catch, foiling the double play. The throw from Espy took him way to the middle and ruined the rhythm of the play.

That’s how I saw it anyway. Not on India.

    • Melvin

You may be right. I do know India took a couple of extra steps. Either way we’re not good at it. That was basically an easy DP by ML standards.

  34. JB

Looks like the Reds aren’t the only team to walk the 9th hitter.

  35. old-school

Looks like reds offense just moving on to third time thru the order and hoping.

    • Melvin

I would have to say that’s a time when the stats don’t tell the whole story. It’s not just about getting picked off when it comes to our base running problems either.

      • Jonathan

I think this goes back to perceived negative value of a pick off compared to the positive value of taking an extra base or other positive base running tasks. yes a pick off looks really bad; however, it also means your looking to run. if the player is never in position to seal a base, then he would never get picked off.

        decent info from (again).

      • Melvin

@Jonathan – I appreciate what you’re saying but it IS possible to steal bases without getting picked off a lot don’t you think? Once in a while is okay. Besides like I said the Reds base running problems reach far beyond just getting picked off.

    • JB

Just think how much better they would be if they didn’t get picked off so much.

  36. Melvin

Maybe we should let Greene hit for himself. That way he would have a chance to really win the game mostly by himself. 😉

    • Jim Walker

Nah, Hunter is not an Ohtani or even Lorenzen, despite the fact people were saying he was a 1st rounder as either a pitcher or SS.

I saw a sound bite a couple of years ago which asked him about his interest in hitting at MLB level. He just smiled and said once they told him he was going to be a pitcher, he quit thinking about hitting and had not tried at all to get up to speed at hitting as he came through the minors.

      • Melvin

Was just in reference to our other hitters. 🙂 Hard to be worse at times.

  37. Mark Moore

45 through 3 feels good to me.

Back him, boyz. Stats say he usually wins if you back him.

  38. Dennis Westrick

Is the Red’s team bus double-parked? No hits and 5 SOs thru 3 innings!

    • RedAlert

Zero hits off this bum …..and Greene with no run support …classic Reds

  39. Mark Moore

Keller consistently covering 1B … go figure.

  40. Mark Moore

And the “expected” hard-luck, hard-hit liner for an out. SMH. 😮

  41. Dennis Westrick

The heck with bobbleheads, they need to hand out No-Doze tablets today!

    • Mark Moore

Yep. I’m on a very “low-wattage” day. Were I in the house in my chair, I’d probably nod off a bit.

  42. Mark Moore

Nice read, Stewie. Saved an extra-base hit there.

Uh … can we at least get a hit, boyz? Maybe that’s the way to start? Please? Pretty please?

    • Dennis Westrick

So, hitting the ball is the object of this sport? Who knew?

    • Mark Moore

OK, that’s a start. Slap shot works.

  43. old-school

Gentlemans agreement on get away day. Lets get this thing done early and third time thru the order decides the winner.

  44. Melvin

Cowboy says with our offense today we’re going to need another HR from Espinal. haha Could be right. 🙂

  45. Mark Moore

Uh … you run that one out, Will. If Telez wanted to, he drops it and gets an easy DP.

    • Mark Moore

Not that it matters in the end …

Dang and I thought last night’s game was a quick one. You can tell its getaway day

    • JB

Hest and humidity is brutal here the past few days. I’m sure they can’t wait to get out of there.

  47. 50thyearRedsfan

Wow who is this incredible Pirate pitcher? He throws it over the plate at 77, 83, or 93 even right down the middle and no one can touch it, he is awesome! Can we trade for him?

  48. Mark A Verticchio

At least 2 or 3 of the guys in this line up need to be sent down, at least Benson and Hurtebese.

    • JB

What? No way! If it wasn’t for Benson I couldn’t run to the bathroom.

  49. Gpod

Why do we have to count on our pitcher to throw a gem to give us any chance of winning

  50. RedAlert

Benson has got to go …. Jacob needs to go with him ….. I refuse to believe there are no better options some where in minor leagues …. These guys getting continuously rewarded for below mediocre performances … Krall Van Winkle …ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzz

    • Melvin

We need to win NOW. Send him down and bring up Soto and/or Jordan. We can’t afford to wait for someone to come out of a prolonged slump. Our offense can’t carry it.

    • Mark A Verticchio

He is a nice story but this is major league baseball, send him down.

  51. Mark Moore

Hunter definitely doing his part. Time to break loose. I’m guessing we have to do it without Jobu who probably caught a bus back to Cincy (or he’s in a culvert down by one of the Three Rivers in a drunken stupor).

First Homer wins!!!! Maybe a complete game by both pitchers today

  53. DW

I’d like to say that Hunter is getting his usual run support, but these days it is Reds pitcher is getting his usual run support.

  54. Mark

I know we are playing with what we have but these Hurtubise at bats are getting pretty ugly.
We need way more production from the corner outfielders.

  55. Mark Moore

6th inning … obviously no need to sub in TySteve for Maile here. No need to change who we are.

  56. Mark Moore

OK, Elly … you have India on in front of you. 3rd time through and time to show us some stuff.

  57. Dennis Westrick

Looks like HG will go at least 6 innings! Score some runs guys to reward his effort!

  58. Dennis Westrick

We have more hits than the Pie-Rats so we win, right?

  59. JB

I would rather watch Dunn at this point than Hurtubise. At least Dunn has a chance to hit it out.

    • Melvin

Unfortunately Dunn is not hitting well in AAA either. Give Jordan and Soto a chance. At least they’re hitting well down there.

      • JB

I wanted to bring Soto up instead of Martini. He is a light hitter but isn’t that what we need ? A guy who gets on by the base hit?

      • Don

Yeah, Dunn wasn’t hitting well before he was called up and he hasn’t hit well since his demotion. His poor showing in the bigs wasn’t a surprise in the least.

      • Melvin

We need ANY kind of a hitter as long as he actually hits. 😀

  60. Melvin

Two hits today Mr. Krall. That’s enough. No need to bring someone up or make a trade. 🙂 After all, we DID score TWO runs last night. 🙂 We still have 10 players available to play too. 🙂

  61. 50thyearRedsfan

I have enjoyed the highlights from Benson, except for the strikeouts, getting caught off base, and admiring the rare home runs he hits but he needs to go down and give someone else a chance. He has great potential but is dragging this team down. There has to be someone who can bat 200 at this level from the Bats, let’s give someone else a chance. Honestly I do like Benson but without tutoring from Votto he has reverted to garbage practice time or something.

    • VaRedsFan

I agree, but there’s nobody down there that can really make a difference.
      They’ve tried several.

  62. Don

Arguably this may be the best game of Greene’s career and he’s probably headed for a no decision because of this anemic offense.

  63. Jim Walker

Cutch made HG throw a couple extra pitches by laying off bait then HG just reached back and OK if you can hit this bad boy hit it and he could not hit it. Little different approach to Reynolds but same result

    • Jim Walker

Cruz on the other hand did some good body work on HG before he popped out. I’d say thanks to his PA, it is questionable whether HG comes out for the 7th.

  64. 50thyearRedsfan

And I really have hope the Hurt You Beast can be a great role player but right now he needs seasoning in the minors!

  65. Melvin

93 after 6. If he has his way he’ll go out for the 7th.

  66. JB

Bell- “Get Sims up. I’m ending this now!”

  67. Mark Moore

OK, unless our Reds string together a boatload of hits and an extended top of the 7th that has made Greene sit for “too long”, he’s got to handle the 7th. Cruz battled him well, but he’s still throwing well.

I realize our Mr. Bell follows this forum religiously within the game to see what we all think (so he can often do the opposite). But I’m hoping he runs him back out there.

  68. Mark Moore

Can Benson just run into one? Blind hog and acorn, maybe?

    • Mark Moore

I suppose that was asking too much.

      Back to you, Hunter.

  69. Dennis Westrick

The last at-bat (Cruz) for the Pirates in the bottom of the 6th is an example of what puzzles me about HG’s approach/pitching style! He has Cruz in an 0-2 count and then takes 9 pitches total to ultimately get a fly out!

    • VaRedsFan

Cruz fouled off several tough pitches, the credit goes to him for that AB.

  70. Mark A Verticchio

There should be many moves tomorrow, some of these guys have got to go.

    • Mark Moore

I think we all agree. Yet I’d be shocked if we see any moves at all.

      • Rob

The only moves we will see will be inconsequential. Either some Louisville flash or a waiver wire special. None of these will address the problem but probably will pacify part of the fan base. I know Bell continues to say everything is fine but we just lost 2 very important series to Division foes.

    • Melvin

Don’t want to make any hasty decisions. 😉

    • Votto4life

The Reds will wait a couple of days and then put Candelario and TJ on the IL.

  71. Votto4life

It’s just amazing how bad the Reds offense is. I try not to think about the 1983 team, but I don’t remember them being this bad.

  72. 50thyearRedsfan

On the bright side of being a Reds fan our pitching continues to be well above average. All great teams have hitting slumps they have to endure but with good pitching those teams can survive a hitting slump or two or three. Our starters are healthy this year and that gives us a chance, but we have to tweak this offense. Please.

    • Melvin

“On the bright side of being a Reds fan our pitching continues to be well above average.”

      Starting pitching it’s true.

  73. Stoney

Hunter certainly doing his part today. This anemic offense needs to find a way to squeeze a run across. Who didn’t see this coming with this lineup.

  74. Mark Moore

50% of the time Candy doesn’t make that play cleanly.

  75. JB

I hope that comes back to haunt Tellez.

  76. Mark Moore

Stewie misplayed it a bit, Fraley didn’t back him up (would have been a long run), Rowdy almost made a TOOTBLAN, and Hunter’s stellar day is done without his boyz backing him at all.

    • Ted Alfred

Yep…more terrible defense… really bad pitch 0-2 right down the middle of the plate

    • VaRedsFan

That wall is taller than GABP…once you plant your foot in the wall for the leap, you are committed to that spot. Good effort I thought, he was high up there…just missed to our left.

  77. Melvin

Fairchild misjudged that one I’m afraid not that it was an easy play.

    • Mark Moore

He thought it was as gone as Rowdy did.

    • Ted Alfred

No problem with Fairchild, but the RF was nowhere to be seen until it was too late. A big fat guy doing the home run walk and trot for the first few seconds should not be able to get into 2nd easily on a ball that hits the wall and comes straight back towards the infield… just terrible back-up defense by the RF

  78. VaRedsFan

Greene gets yanked after that 1 hit.
    Disagree with the move.

  79. dimondfvr

In 108 Games played last year, Benson had 103 Strikeouts. Sixty nine games including today, 93 strikeouts.

    • Hanawi

They apparently need to hire Votto as a hitting coach because I’m not sure what the current guy is doing.

    • Melvin

He’s still playing. Our offense can carry him. 😉

    • Ted Alfred

Yep…he’s been a deadspot in the line-up all year.

  80. Dennis Westrick

Don’t always agree with Bell’s in-game moves but taking HG out after the double was a good move! Hope it works out!

    • Ted Alfred

I agree, very hot/humid outside and he was around 107 pitches

  81. Melvin

Talk about dogging it thinking you had a HR. Another example of the dead ball this year though.

  82. 50thyearRedsfan

I am really tired of these guys admiring their batted bat instead of running because they think that it might be a home run. At least it was a Pirate that made the boneheaded move of watching the ball instead of running, if that was Elly it would have been an inside the parker..

    • Mark Moore

Rowdy wasn’t going beyond 2nd, but that was very close to an arrogant TOOTBLAN.

  83. Mark Moore

Dangerous guy to have up in this situation.

  84. Mark Moore

OK, now my question is, “Who gets the 8th?”

    • VaRedsFan

Moll maybe? depending on handedness of course.

    • Melvin

We could REALLY use some more late inning relief.

  85. Daytonnati

At least Greene doesn’t get the “L”.

  86. Indy Red Man

I see our bags are packed, I mean bats are stacked for this one! What about doubling the De La Cruz factor? Bryan hit #13 today and will K 150x this year. Fits right in minus the 13 hr part

  87. dimondfvr

Keller has thrown just 77 pitches going into the 8th.

  88. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds playing 3-man down and a very weak lineup against Pirates ace, reached the 8th inning being in a tied game…Nice chance to win even scoring just a run

    • Mark Moore

I don’t believe he’s their “ace”. He is performing well.

    • Melvin

…because our pitcher was pitching like an ACE. 😉

  89. Mark Moore

If we score, is Keller in line for a complete game loss?

  90. Hanawi

Another excellent outing from Greene. Just needs to cut down his pitches a little bit to get deeper, though not sure how important that is in MLB these days. 7th inning seems to be the max for most starters. Only 12 complete games across all of baseball so far.

  91. Dennis Westrick

So, Cruz faces 3 batters and throws 13 pitches! That means he cannot pitch the 8th, right?

  92. Mark Moore

Stewie on and Candyman coming to the plate?

  93. Red Thunder

Keller had to sit some that inning, see if that makes a difference

  94. Melvin

Fairchild walks. 🙂 Bunt Hurtubise. Not it’s Candy. Hope he doesn’t hurt his leg more.

    • Hanawi

Yeah. Seems like they could have played some small ball there and tried to get Fairchild to 2nd. Could then get Stephenson in the game with a runner in scoring position.

  95. Mark A Verticchio

Bell should have bunted then pinch hit Candy for Maile.

  96. RedsGettingBetter

I thought Hurtubise will stay in the game bunting in this AB…

  97. Melvin

Should have had Hurtubise bunt there instead in my view.

    • VaRedsFan

I’d rather him steal the bag, then bunt him to 3rd.

      • Red Thunder

Could have if Candy would have looked at a pitch or two

  98. Melvin

Obviously Mr. Bell doesn’t agree with us gentlemen. 🙁

    • Mark Moore

Wanna bet? I think Fraley enters the defensive mix now.

  99. 50thyearRedsfan

Awesome move Stewie! Please get him home!

    • Jim Walker

I am not sure he is actually available short of an emergency

      • Mark Moore

Any idea why? Some injury we don’t know about? He’s not due for paternity leave until August.

      • Melvin

If that truly is the case we basically had NO bench today. hahahaha!!!! Candy only played out of necessity. smh

  100. JB

Ok Stuey , there’s two outs. You can go on contact.

  101. 50thyearRedsfan

You all are right bunting was the move there by Hurt u beast, and after the steal of 2nd Stewie could be on 3rd! And to be successful you need to be able to score a runner from 3rd with less than two outs but alas we never considered small ball in this pitcher’s duel. Why why why!

  102. JB

I’m thinking that the automatic runner on second in the 10th might be the best offensive threat for both teams.

  103. Mark Moore

OK, Melvin. I’m wrong. Candy at 1st and Steer to LF. So weaker defense now.

Up to Martinez to get through the weaker part of their lineup.

  104. JB

Sadak- haven’t seen any balls drilled. Reynolds on cue.

  105. Mark Moore

And that’s probably the ballgame. At least the loss isn’t on Greene.

Chances of this affair being done before my 3PM meeting on the uptick.

  106. RedsGettingBetter

    I can’t believe it ….

  107. RedAlert

Ballgame – way to come I. And throw gas on it Martinez

  108. Red Thunder

There is that first homer thing! Hoping I was wrong

    • Mark Moore

      You did call it.

And NOW we see Sam Moll.

  109. 50thyearRedsfan

As for needing a new closer Diaz is 16 for 18 in save situations and that is pretty awesome, his high era is due to being used in non save situations which we have seen since he became a Red he is not good at. So that is on the manager for not using a player correctly. As far as some of the ugly saves he has I only care about the final result, bend not break and he has done that.

  110. RedAlert

What a waste of great starting pitching …. And Krall sits and watches as Rome burns …

    • Jim Walker

I’ve got my fingers crossed that Krall is playing out the line before he sets the hook.

  111. Melvin

We REALLY need some late inning relief help. We can’t even get Krall to give us healthy players from the options we already have though.

    • Hanawi

The bullpen has been pretty good overall. Martinez has been much better as a reliever, though I’m wondering if he’s better in the middle innings instead of 8/9. They could have gone to Moll there instead.

    • JB

Can’t win when you can’t score. Martinez has been solid in the pen. We wouldn’t even care about the pen if the offense wasn’t so bad. I mean it’s just terrible.

      • Mark Moore

Can’t score when you can’t get on base.

  112. Mark Moore

Last call, gents … last call!!!

  113. Indy Red Man

Martinez sucks too. Not bad for long man, but you don’t need to pay $13 mil for 4.40.
    .500…A Bridge Too Far

  114. Mark A Verticchio

35 and 39, If this team could hit at all or knew how to produce a run or two = better manager with this pitching staff they could make the playoffs and be dangerous because of Lodolo, Greene and Abbott.

    • Hanawi

Those are 3 of the top 20 most valuable pitchers in baseball based on WAR. And all young. They have the core but need McLain back more than anything. Add Marte and then another OF that can play everyday and that’s enough to make a run in my opinion.

      • Melvin

        ….and another late inning reliever.

  115. Red Thunder

Wake that heck up offense or take the L again

  116. Ted Alfred

    13 million for Martinez…yikes.

  117. JB

Like I said, we all get giddy when they win. Reality is they aren’t good enough to string a few wins in a row unless the pitching throws shutouts.

  118. Mark Moore

Early on in this game thread, someone was chiding a lot of us for our critical comments and not just enjoying the game for what it is. I believe this game might illustrate why many of us with a lot of passion for Reds baseball who have followed the team for a long time might sound as cranky as Marty B.

It’s more than just a perfect bad storm. And it starts at the very top of the organization.

    • Red Thunder

@ Mark, its through the whole system, top to bottom, minors is no different than the Majors. The stories I could tell!

  119. Melvin

We’ve scored a total of three runs in the three game series. No need to get uncomfortable or make any hasty decisions Mr. Krall. Don’t get up.

  120. Mark Moore

And so it ends for this road trip.

  121. RedAlert

Go thru the motions … just like their manager and do nothing GM.

  122. LDS

I wasn’t expecting much from the Reds this year and thus far they haven’t surprised me. They are just a poorly constructed and very poorly managed team. A very good Greene effort squandered.

    • Hanawi

They need to replace some of the deadweight in the lineup, but right now, the upper levels are pretty bad. I still think Dunn will be good, but he’s likely not 100% from his injury. Reds don’t have the depth that other teams with higher payrolls do to absorb the injury issues. They have valued the platoon guys (Benson, Fraley, etc.) higher than they should instead of looking at them as 26th man PHs off the bench and bringing in another starting OF.

      • VaRedsFan

They have prospects that they can trade for proven talent though.

        Dunn has proved nothing.

      • Hanawi

Dunn has been very good until this year and he’s coming off a shoulder injury. I don’t think he’s going to be right until next year.

I’d be fine trading Collier if they can find someone that can be a middle of the order bat. A lot of their other top guys in the minors have struggled or been injured as well, so they would be trading at a low point.

      • LDS

They do but then who would talk about the great farm system that Krall built. Of course, the farm system isn’t winning much this year. And the pitching is atrocious thus far (collectively). It’s one of the reasons I won’t be surprised if the Reds waste their draft pick on a pitcher, hoping for another Skenes, vs. acquiring a potentially impactful bet. Let’s face it – nothing the Reds have done in recent years suggests a very astute organization.

  123. Votto4life

This is not going to change who we are.

      • Votto4life

Tonight, I will be going to see FC Cincinnati who is in second place in the Eastern Conference of the MSL and has the defending 2023 MVP Luke Acosta. FC Cincinnati is only 2 points behind Lionel Messi and Miami.

Seriously JB, you should check them out some time. They are a very well ran organization. A team the City of Cincinnati can really be proud of.

      • JB

I live in upstate NY. Tonight I’m going to Seneca Lake and a steak.

      • Votto4life

JB such a beautiful area. How far are you from North Elba? I’m a bit of a history bluff and have been planning a trip to update NY. Enjoy the Steak!

  124. Red Thunder

2 hits, that’s the offense. Another HG pitching performance wasted

  125. RedsGettingBetter

This is a pathetic loss … This poor and embarrassing offense … great pitching absolutely wasted

  126. VaRedsFan

Bell continues to show no faith in Moll.
He is the best pitcher in the pen and needs to pitch the 8th.
He is being reduced to a LOOGY

  127. west larry

What a bunch of poor “hitters”. W need a big bat, and we need one now.

  128. Mike Adams

“This won’t change who we are”:
    weary disappointed Reds fans

  129. Anthony

Note the 700th different batting order. (Seems like it) Again no offensive production. What a coincidence. Our current manager couldnt motivate a dog to chase a cat. Its beating our heads against a wall. Never gonna take off till hes 3b coach for Lehigh Valley. Gotta go. Long overdue for fresh leadership and approach. Google Einstein Law of Insanity. Thats our #1 issue!
