The Cincinnati Reds remain on the road today as they start a series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. This game will be on Bally Sports Ohio, but it’s also going to be on FS1.

Carson Spiers

After making two starts last year for the Reds, Carson Spiers is set to make his first start for Cincinnati this season. He’s been starting in Triple-A, but all five of his big league appearances this year have been in long relief.

The splits for Spiers in the big leagues do show some differences. Lefties have picked up a few extra singles when compared to righties and given the sample size that’s led to a higher average, on-base percentage, and slugging – but it’s all based on those three extra singles. If we include his time in Triple-A then he’s been better against lefties, holding them to a .522 OPS compared to a .662 OPS from righties.

Paul Skenes

After a so-so debut back on May 11th, Paul Skenes has been downright dominant in his five starts. He’s thrown 29.1 innings with a 1.84 ERA to go along with just four walks and 39 strikeouts. His last outing saw him walk no one in 6.1 shutout innings and strike out eight.

While Skenes has been quite good against everyone, he’s really crushed left-handed hitters. They are hitting just .197 with almost no walks and are hitting for next to no power. Righties are hitting slightly better, but also don’t walk at all. Right-handed hitters do hit for a little more power, though. In the minor leagues this season, though, lefties hit way better than righties. They had a .624 OPS against him, while righties had a .340 OPS against him in seven games.

News and Notes

Roster moves

Christian Encarnacion-Strand was moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. They made that move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for reliever Brooks Kriske, who they added and then optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Kriske had been in Louisville all season, so he likely had an opt-out if the team didn’t add him. You can read more about both moves and players from our piece earlier this afternoon.

All-Star voting update

To the surprise of probably no one, Elly De La Cruz has more votes for the All-Star game than anyone else on the Cincinnati Reds. The numbers were released earlier today and you can see how everyone stacked up from the club right here.

He will give up a hit in the 1st inning. I’ll bet all of King Midas’s silver.

      • doofus

King Midas may have something to say about you betting away his silver.

      • Bet on Red

or maybe not it seems, always a good bet won

      • Melvin

Looks like he’ll be able to hold on to his silver. 🙂

    • doofus

I am glad my prognostication was incorrect.

  1. JB

Skenes against Benson. Oh boy this could get ugly.

  2. SultanofSwaff

You have to think this is the first of a handful of starts for Spiers, an extended audition. Seems to have a high level of pitchability. Best of luck to him.

    • Rob

That doesn’t match Bell’s endorsement of Ashcraft and short turnaround. You may be right but that indicates Ashcraft’s issues are deeper than reported. I personally don’t have a clue but there are no injury concerns.

  3. TJ

Over under on strikeouts for the Reds? I’m thinking 11ish. Elly and Benson should be good for 3 a piece.

  4. Mark Moore

Here’s to Skene’s coming back to this planet and our guys feeling the “shame” of blowing the game yesterday.

Let’s Kick the Pie-Rats Off the Plank into the Three Rivers!!!

  5. GreatRedLegsFan

Looks like some light rain and thunders coming up.

  6. Hanawi

So Skenes dominates left-handed hitters, but they still roll out the lefty-heavy lineup to face him. Do they read the scouting reports at all?

    • LDS

It’s the only strategy Bell seems to know. He never looks at numbers.

    • Dennis Westrick

There are scouting reports on the opposition team? Really? Who knew?

      • Melvin

Yep. Who bats right and who bats left? What pitchers throw right and what pitchers throw left? 😉

  7. JB

Well it seems like Reds have no chance but you have to remember that the Reds use to kick Garrett Cole’s butt every game . Here’s to stranger things

  8. Dennis Westrick

Well, didn’t follow yesterday’s game very closely due to Father’s Day obligations. Did check the score from time to time though! When the Reds were up 3-0 early in the game, I had a funny feeling that it wouldn’t last!

Someone else on this site a few days ago made an observation that Sims seems to perform better when he starts an inning and NOT when he comes in with runners on base! Unfortunately, that scenario played out in the worst way! Leaving eight (8) men on base and going 1 for 8 with RISP didn’t help! EDLC certainly did his part!

Time to move on and start with a win tonight against the Pie-Rats! Go Reds!

  9. RedsGettingBetter

Game delay my friends…. Who knows any update about it?

    • Mark Moore

TWC radar shows stuff rolling through until 10PM or so. If that’s the case, there will be no baseball in my house tonight.

      • west larry

Gameday has taken down the “delay” and posted “warm up”.

      • Mark Moore still showing “weather delay”. TWC has it raining there now.

    • VaRedsFan

7:10 1st pitch was the last I heard.

  10. Jason Franklin

Fun fact of No Reason at all: Just noticed Daniel Vogelbach has never stolen or attempted a stolen base in his entire career. He is one of 3 players with at least 500 games played who have that to be proud of. Just something fun to share. Maybe the Reds will sign him now that he is DFA’d? 🙂

    • JB

Maybe that’s why they do that commercial with Voglebach attempting to steal and Showalter ( his coach) is saying ” is he thinking about stealing”?

  11. Dennis Westrick

Raindrops keep fallin’ on my head! And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed. Nothing seems to fit. Those raindrops are fallin’. On my head, they keep fallin’!

  12. Harry Stoner

Well, after last night’s debacle, I’m excited to see how Spiers does back in a starting role.

His starts last season were forgettable, but he’s shown a lot of growth so far.

He’s been bit overlooked among the rash of injuries and getting shuffled around amidst the bullpen logjam.

I hope to see him continue to do well and for Bell to be attentive to the situation..

    • Melvin

I have confidence in him. I’ve got him pitching for my fantasy team this week today and Sunday. 🙂

      • Melvin

Come on Spiers. Settle down. You’re not helping the Reds or my fantasy team.

  13. Mark Moore

And Candyman keep on hitting … 😮

Time to mount one of our patented 2-out charges.

    • Mark Moore

      And he managed to swipe 2nd … 😮 😮

  14. Mark Moore

Did I call that or what??? 2-out magic indeed.

    • Melvin

Good call buddy. You’re on it! 😉 Keep it up.

    • Melvin

That was a good hit by Steer by the way. 🙂

  15. Melvin

Candyman with a stolen base so he’s not THAT slow (referring to being taken out for a pinch runner) :).

    • Harry Stoner

My hunch is that he was making a point to his manager, both with the hit and the SB.

      Likely sailed over Bell’s head.

    • RedsGettingBetter

Tough beginning by Spiers…hopefully he may settle in the game… Reds need score runs against Skenes now…

  16. VaRedsFan

    Skenes K-Prop tonight is 7.5
    0 so far.

  17. Steve

How much silver did you get for Candy’s single in the first, Doug???

    • Mark Moore

Nevermind … he had to give it back.

  18. Mark Moore

Sure … walk Cutch to start things … that won’t bite us.

    Bike Helmets, por favor.

Of course, he needs to throw a strike to accomplish that little trick.

  19. Indy Red Man

Great start. Our guys are really showing appreciation for jumping out to a lead

  20. Mark Moore

And just like that, our little lead to start the game was gone …

Somebody start doing a rain dance, please.

    • Jason Franklin

I wonder if it gets bad if Bell lets Spiers take a real thumping?

  21. Jason Franklin

Well, that was a nice lead.

    • Melvin

I enjoyed it too. Let’s get another one. 😉

    • Harry Stoner

Bell waits until after the obviously nervous young pitcher gives up the lead before talking to him.

Those here who say he has a limited feel for the game are right.

  22. Rob

Anyone else think that Skenes performance tonite could have some bearing on the Reds first round draft choice? If the Pirates can get high level results in 10 months from a top draft choice, why shouldn’t the Reds? I think if Skenes show Krall something tonite, then Burns becomes a stronger possibility at 2. Only an opinion.

    • Melvin

I watched Condon and Bazzana highlights on Youtube. They will both be a major asset to any team that drafts them. Very hard to pass them up.

      • VaRedsFan

Reds will send whoever they draft to A-ball. Then year 2 start at High A…promote to AA…Year 3 AAA….keep him there because Kevin Newman-type is blocking him at MLB…..ect…ect

    • DW

Skenes is a once in a decade (or more) type talent. Can’t expect that from every draft.

    • SHOW OPS

Burns is probably the top pitcher in college, and has a lot of potential with his mix, but he did not dominate in the CWS like Skenes did. Skenes is IMHO a step above. I am no scout, but I’d like Condon or Bazzana, in that order.

  23. VaRedsFan

Spiers might have Nick Martinez disease.
Great in long relief, but not a good starter?

  24. JB

Wonder why Bell didn’t start with an opener in Suter? He has done it before and then brought in Spiers.

    • Harry Stoner

Because that would imply he was actually thinking about things in a clear-headed responsive way.

  25. Mark Moore

Well … Spiers found the strike zone … we can give him that.

  26. Indy Red Man

Spiers is a scrub. Down and in to lefties…always a solid gameplan

    • Rob

His resume is not strong. Sometimes I question what in the heck are the Reds thinking. Pot luck? You bring up 5 guys and one of them will serve you well. That is what it seems like at times.

  27. VaRedsFan

I noticed Elly was all the way over to the 1st base line to take the cutoff….then Jake threw to the wrong bag again.

    • Harry Stoner

Fraley is a menace in the field and on the base paths.

  28. Melvin

Candelario actually made a good play there at 3B.

  29. RedAlert

Great start Spiers – just awesome

  30. Indy Red Man

I predict the Pirates will win 8-9 out of 13 vs the Reds. Won 8 last year and they’re much much better now

  31. Mark Moore

This doesn’t feel quite as deep of a hole given it is the Pie-Rats … but we need to set ’em up and knock ’em in there to even the score rather quickly.

  32. RedsGettingBetter

Tough beginning by Spiers…hopefully he may settle in the game… Reds need score runs against Skenes now…

  33. RedBB

Krall is a F*ng MORON if he shrinks Spiers is better than Ashcarft…knew that before tonight

    • Jason Franklin

Agreed. We can only hope Ashcraft is back soon and is focused again (or whatever reason he was not doing well).

      • Mark Moore

Suffering from Tyler Mahle Syndrome … the one where he wouldn’t throw strikes?

  34. Indy Red Man

Throwing 100 with 4 pitches. Is that legal cause our guys throw 98 with 2

  35. Mark Moore

That was a fun half inning … said no Reds fan EVER!!!

  36. Jason Franklin

This is the kind of Reds game that gives me really bad flashbacks to the 2022 season. A starter who probably shouldn’t be starting (he is a good long man/blow-out guy) and a team managed by Bell. I hope they can find a spark and come back. Got to hope to get a couple guys on with some bloops and a blast against Skeenes.

  37. Rob

Reds need innings out of Spiers tonite. 3-4 runs and 6+ innings would meet the task. No 4-5 inning starts.

  38. Indy Red Man Solid player becomes Stan Musial when he plays us. See you tomorrow

  39. Mark Moore

Maybe I’ll check back in later … or maybe this Provisional Clete will be all she wrote for tonight. Just can’t bear to watch a drubbing when there are other things I can tune into with my First Wife.

  40. RedsGettingBetter

Spiers 4SFB has been crushed because a bad location

  41. RedAlert

Spears ain’t starter material , bullpen ok . Would rather see Ashcraft than this .

    • Melvin

At this rate definitely. Spiers was a lot better last time out.

  42. DK in Erie PA

Very interested to know what Reds opponents are batting with 2 strikes particularly 0-2. My guess is one of three worst in MLB. Can ANYONE on this staff ever put away a hitter with 2 strikes?

  43. Votto4life

Glad the Reds are finally into the easy part of their schedule.

    • Melvin

Yep. The “easy” part has done really well for us the past few years. 😉

      • JB

Right! That’s how you get contract extensions.

  44. RedsGettingBetter

    Splitter at 95.1 MPH. Insane…

  45. DHud

Skenes could throw left handed and the reds wouldn’t hit him

  46. RedAlert

With this anemic offense , no way Reds can afford to pass on a top hitter with the second pick in draft ….no way …..

    • Ted Alfred

That seems obvious… which means they’ll probably blow it and draft a P who will take 4+ years to develop etc etc

  47. Melvin

Oh my goodness. That was a terrible play be Benson. Maybe in the lights? He was RIGHT there. Over ran the ball.

      • Melvin

Hope that was the excuse. That was terrible.

      • JB

How about he is terrible? I’ve seen enough of him.

    • Melvin

Nothing against Benson. He’s a good guy but we could really use an every day outfielder to go along with Friedl and Steer.

  48. RedAlert

Reds playing little league baseball on all fronts ….

  49. Melvin

Sheesh another error by EDLC. We’re on our total game tonight…hitting, pitching, fielding. Still time to turn it around and win.

  50. Mark A Verticchio

This team is just so weak on fundamentals, and it starts at the top. I’m afraid the team is heading in the wrong direction again.

  51. Mark A Verticchio

Fraley has really had a bad year, average is fair but no power. How many teams have their #5 hitter with 1 home run.

    • Melvin

Yeah. I know he’s struggling with his daughter situation too.

    • Harry Stoner

      Don’t neglect his 9 rbis!

I feel for the guy as he must be having a tough time with his daughter’s health issues.

His head doesn’t seem in the game.

I’ve never been a huge fan, but am resigned to the likelihood that this season is going to be a wash for him.

I figured he was just a fill in from the Geno-Winker trade, but it’s not like the Reds are stockpiling outfielders who can hit.

  52. Harry Stoner

Seeing Grandal behind the plate reminds me that Devon Mesoraco turns 36 on Wednesday.

Been out of the game for 6 years.

His 2014 season was the real deal, then he couldn’t stay unhurt.

Grandal, of course, part of the high cost of “All In” Latos.

    • Melvin

Latos was pretty good for us for two years.

    • DHud

Hard to baseball when your hips don’t work

      • Harry Stoner

        Or shoulder.

        Or foot.

        Kind of a tragedy, really.

At least he got one good contract out of it all.

I thought the Reds were set for 10 years.

  53. Mark Moore

Afraid the Clete fully loaded and I’m not taking it back. Skenes is definitely on tonight and we’re definitely off. Perhaps tomorrow (he said with a twinge of hope).

    Night, all.

  54. Hanawi

Hoping Spiers can hold them for two more innings. I would take the 4 runs if he can give them 6.

    • Melvin

Yeah. That wouldn’t be TOO bad if he could do that.

  55. Dennis Westrick

Nothing ever changes with this team! SPs average 20 pitches per inning! And the offense averages one SO per inning! Recipe for a last place team!

  56. Chad Donnell

Another homeplate umpire that does not know the strike zone

    • Hanawi

Can’t watch but following on Gamecast. Skenes seems to be getting the low strike pretty regularly. Reds’ need to adjust.

      • VaRedsFan

He’s getting calls off the inside corner to leftys

  57. RedsGettingBetter

    Friedl is in a slump suddenly. He’s 0 for 11 since Saturday….

    • VaRedsFan

But has hit the ball hard in several of those AB’s

  58. VaRedsFan

Skenes getting all of the off the plate strike calls.
Spiers can’t get a strike called with the whole ball in the box.

Elly gets hosed on calls every game.

    Why the double standard?

Credit to Elly for never saying a word to the ump. Because you know there would be a narrative that he is some hot-head, flash if he ever said anything. Mature beyond his years.

  59. VaRedsFan

Great catch by TJ….now he’s hurt.
    Possible hammy….doesn’t look serious….
    He should get a 2nd opinion anyway…

  60. JB

Well there goes Friedl. That’s going to hurt if he is out a bit.

  61. RedsGettingBetter

Wow, Is TJ Friedl injured again?

  62. JB

And there it is. Pickoff number 12 for the year.

    • Harry Stoner

Don’t worry, it won’t change who they are.

  63. Mark A Verticchio

I am about to think this year was just not meant to be, injuries, poor decisions and fundamentals, underachieving players and so on.

    • JA

Poor decisions makes injuries… in any pro sport…

      Any… from soccer to box

    • Harry Stoner

      McLain, Marte, CES out.

Friedl, Benson, India, Fraley, Maile not really contributing as expected.

      EDLC productive but wildly inconsistent.

That’s a lot of missing hits and a lot of Ks in exchange.

Focus on Greene and Abbott improving, Lodolo staying healthy Williamson coming back.

      Maybe Spiers eventually.

I didn’t think playoffs coming into the season, just wanted improved baseball on any given night.

The pitching has provided some of that, but Bell and the appalling lack of fundamentals are withering.

  64. RedsGettingBetter

The frequent picks off have killed so many rallies and promising innings for the Reds

  65. Mark A Verticchio

Surely their 12 pick offs leads baseball.

  66. JB

That first inning killed Spiers. Bell has used the opener(Suter) before. Why not tonight is the million dollar question.

    • Harry Stoner

Bell wanted to show he was in charge after last night’s fiasco?

  67. VaRedsFan

Credit to Spiers for battling thru 6 after the rough start.

Yes, happy he made it this far, especially with Bell using Martinez yesterday knowing Spiers was starting today. Another panic decision by Bell, IMO. He has held them, now time for the offense to do something or take the L.

  68. RedsGettingBetter

TYSteve is also in a slump , he is 1-19 last 8 days

  69. LDS

Time to bring in the LH’er so Bell empties his bench. At least Bell entertains the MLB managers with his little league antics. Now in season 6, when it was obvious several years ago that Bell wasn’t the guy the Reds needed.

    • Harry Stoner

Bell getting ready to start ‘managing’.

Happens in the 7th inning most of the time

    • Votto4life

It’s time for another extension. Perhaps the Reds can extend Bell for the rest of the millennium. You don’t want to take a chance of him getting away.

  70. JB

Skenes out. Let’s see if we can get their bullpen.

  71. RedAlert

Bout sick of all these Reds hitters getting hit on hands …. Need to start some payback … totally ridiculous this year

    • Dennis Westrick

Clint Hurdle’s Pirates all over again! Time to retaliate!

      • Harry Stoner

Yeah, the Hurdle years were really, really bad.

MLB brass completely looked the other way.

        A shameful period.

    • Harry Stoner

Becoming picked-off #13 isn’t going to make Martini’s hand feel any better.

  72. RedAlert

Nice fundamentals Bell ….Bush league … these dudes just don’t get it and Bell lets it continue with zero consequences

  73. RedsGettingBetter

No, no way, man… that’s very bad

  74. JB

I think the Reds can get to 30 times picked off this year. They need to focus and achieve this goal.

    • Harry Stoner

Bell: “We want to stay aggressive!”

  75. Dennis Westrick

How many TOOTBLANs this season? Inning killers!

  76. RedsGettingBetter

Awful game today …. so far

  77. Redlegs1869

Agree on getting hit. More sick of our base runners being the most incompetent in baseball

  78. Mark A Verticchio

This is just a bad bad baseball team. These guys have no clue. Two innings in a row in a 4 -1 game, losing, where the lead off man reaches base and is picked off.

    • Harry Stoner

Bell shuffling through his excuses cue cards

He’ll be prepped and ready for the post game interview / mumble.

    • RedAlert

It’s inexcusable Mark … but these kinda things carry no consequences with Bell or apparently anybody else in this front office …. Just like Benson striking out a million times and still gets more run than he
deserves … he should have been in AAA long ago

  79. RedAlert

Get off you keister KRALL and DO

    • TR

The Reds management seems to have a self-imposed block to shop around young unproven talent to improve the team, especially offensively. Until that changes, I don’t see our team getting much beyond .500.

  80. Harry Stoner

Did the ump just eject Bell for the rest of the season?

  81. Mark A Verticchio

34 and 38 after tonight and heading in the wrong direction. The next two days you have your best two young pitchers going. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing or where, would somebody please tell Bell these are must win games even though it’s June.

    • Dennis Westrick

Never any sense of urgency with Bell! Come September, when we are hopelessly out of the playoff race, Bell will know that he still has a job for the next 2 seasons!

  82. VaRedsFan

    On HBPs
You guys do know that Greene and Lodolo lead the league right?

    • Harry Stoner

Add to them the K Bros De La Cruz and Benson.

Statcast researchers in a whirlwind trying to find the last time this has occurred.

  83. Harry Stoner

Souter has been proving to be a good acquisition on the Bull’s part.

It would be 7-1 under ordinary Reds BP circumstances.

  84. VaRedsFan

Pitt announcers saying that the Pirates were flickering the light while Suter was warming.
    Legit gripe.

    • Harry Stoner

Pirates got zilch in 7 innings after scoring off a nervous rookie pitcher who Bell waited to calm down until after he had his early meltdown.

      Still a bogus team.

  85. Dennis Westrick

    Three Words! Last place Reds!

      • Dennis Westrick

Better be soon! At 71 I ain’t getting any younger!

      • Harry Stoner

I just want to watch some good baseball on any given summer evening.

Unfortunately, I’ve got a Bell in my shoe and I need to shake it out.

The Reds have some very exciting players to watch, but the team is a mess.

They should be playing much better baseball than they have been playing.

        It’s wearing me down.

Bell has become a cartoon character.

I might really need to take a break for a week or so,

Denis, I know the feeling. I’ll turn 80 before spring training and I wonder if I’ll see the reds win 90 in a season again.

Hey, the Cubs could lose. It could take a day or two to reach last place. Just like last year, the Reds continue to lose to teams in the division. The playoffs are fading fast. And June is typically the Reds good month. All-Star game and the 2nd half, remember the Reds have had a winning record in August only once in Bell’s tenure. Without big moves from Krall, this year likely won’t be the second. And the only time a Bell team has made the playoffs was the COVID shortened season. Bell hadn’t had time to burnout the bullpen.

According to HarryCast baseball archives, it’s been since all the way back in 1247 that a team has had:

The two pitchers with the most hit batters

The two hitters with the most Ks

Lead the league in the most runners picked off

Have the SS leading the league in errors.

Baseball fans in 2875 will look back at this team in wonder.

Following a bit from afar tonight…Runners picked off in consecutive innings with no outs? Wow what is going on there!? Especially Martini, at least EDLC you know is the fastest guy in the league and super aggressive.

This whole super aggressive, running style the Reds have wanted to adopt as their identity seems to be backfiring a lot at times. Potentially with injuries too. I like the sound of an aggressive running hustling team, but maybe they are liking the discipline and wisdom that goes along with that, knowing when to pull in the reigns. The other teams know the Reds are like this of course so they seem to probably be focusing more on cutting down on that aggressivness.

Friedl being out again would be terrible. If I’m not mistaken, he hasn’t had a game off since returning from his last injury. Can’t blame Bell for his injuries, but I feel Bell is overplaying Friedl and De La Cruz, almost like he can’t take them out of the lineup, they’re too valuable, a thought the Reds can’t win a game without them. I think a guy coming off several injuries, you got to give him a day off occasionally, maybe slow him down a bit too.

Yeah it’s a great plan. There are really super aggressive to the point of absurdity over and over, but when they’ve got two outs in the 9th down a run vs the Brewers with the tying run on 2nd when we got good old Stu Fairchild running the bases like a middle school kid, checking to make sure the center fielder doesn’t catch the ball for some reason as he’s he’s starting towards 3rd…sheesh
