Graham Ashcraft

It has been a struggle over the last month for Graham Ashcraft. In his five starts he’s posted a 6.38 ERA in 24.0 innings with 12 walks, five hit batters, and just 17 strikeouts. The last time out he allowed three runs in just 4.2 innings against the Cubs – but the Reds did win that game.

The splits for Graham Ashcraft aren’t huge when it comes to lefties and righties. Left-handed hitters do hit for a good average and they are hitting for power, but they aren’t walking all that much. Right-handed hitters are hitting for an ok-ish average and are only hitting for a moderate amount of power. They draw more walks than lefties do and even with the difference in batting average, those walks give them a higher on-base percentage. Where you can see big splits is in the home and away column. On the road Ashcraft has a 3.11 ERA (7.11 at home) and his OPS against is 156 points lower.

Dakota Hudson

The last month has been good for Dakota Hudson. Since the start of May he’s made six starts with a 3.86 ERA. But that ERA is likely deceptive a bit as he’s managed just 15 strikeouts to go along with 14 walks and three hit batters in 32.2 innings. The last time out he had his best start of the season, allowing one run in 7.0 innings with just one walk.

Hitters aren’t hitting for much power this season against Hudson – be that from the left or right side. Righties aren’t hitting for much average, either. They do walk often enough and make plenty of contact. Lefties are hitting for a solid average and they are walking a ton. In fact they walk more than they strike out against him. At home his ERA is 7.43 (3.41 on the road) and hitters have an .886 OPS against him (.575 on the road).

My last scheduled meeting is at 3PM and shouldn’t take more than about 15 minutes. So I’ll be up and ready to watch the fun. Here’s hoping we can Sweep those Rocky Mountain Swine off to higher elevation and come back home to battle the Stupid Cubs (successfully).

Somebody make sure Jobu didn’t catch an early flight, please.

    • Dennis Westrick

Good afternoon, Mark! At work as well but no scheduled late afternoon meetings!

As you can see from my first post below, I bailed after the 8th inning last night!

Buck Farmer didn’t exactly plow thru the Rockies in the 9th but we did harvest a win!

  2. Dennis Westrick

Stayed up past my normal work night bedtime last night to follow the 8th inning!

As a stroke survivor, didn’t want to chance it that my last word(s) would be BELL! when Bell decided who he wanted to pitch in the bottom of the 9th!

Good win for the Reds and an outstanding effort by Montas and Cruz! Buck (The Astronaut) Farmer, not-so-much!

Waht the heck, let’s play janitor today and get out the Brooms!

    • Mark Moore

I stayed up too late as well. Punted the morning walk as a result (plus my lower back was sore). Got a bit nervous there at the end.

    • Chris

Who did you want to pitch the 9th? Farmer has the best era in the entire bullpen. I’m not a fan of Bell either, but it is getting to the point that no matter what move he makes, he gets bashed, and I think it’s getting a bit ridiculous. Frankly, I think he managed last nights game rather flawlessly. And yes, that’s a bit of a shock.

      • Dennis Westrick

Chris, don’t disagree! Bell did an excellent job last night making decisions regarding when to pull Montas, using Cruz and Farmer to finish!

ERAs for relief pitchers can be misleading as the often inherit runners from previous pitchers and if they allow them to score it is not reflected in their respective ERA!

Farmer and Diaz both make me nervous but sometimes you gotta dance with the one that brung ya!

  3. Jason T.

    Sweep would be huge!
Hoping Ashcraft gets back on track with a quality start.
Let’s keep those bats going and score lots of runs.

  4. Dennis Westrick

Keys to today’s game, IMO, are for Reds “hitters” to display some patience against Hudson and for Pete’s (Rose) sake, GA pitch past the 5th inning!

  5. Tom Diesman

Saw the note above about Pagan returning from the IL tomorrow. It will be an interesting move to see who’s spot he takes. Probably either Moll optioned or they will have to cut the cord and decide to DFA a depth piece.

Also, do I remember correctly that today was when Encarnacion-Strand was to be re-evaluated? If so I hope we get an idea of what the timeline for his return will be.

    • AllTheHype

Justin Wilson is the guy they are avoiding in leverage situations. Whether they will say goodbye to his guaranteed contract is another question. There’s a small chance he could be claimed on the waiver wire.

    • VaRedsFan

Sims would be my choice, if I had a vote.
But even he had a good run up until his last outing.

  6. Ill bill

Thinking today will be the day Ashcraft turns things around. He’s due to turn it up. Just like last year but his down time this years wasn’t as bad as last year. If he turns it around today. For some reason all of my posts never make it here.

    • VaRedsFan

I think he will turn it around too.
But Coors is a hard place to do it.

      • Ill bill

Didn’t take long to realize I was wrong about that lol

  7. RedsGettingBetter

Elly at 108.4 MPH ground rocket

  8. VaRedsFan

Elly was looking in at the catcher as he was running.
I wish the runners would stop worrying if the catcher is going to throw through or not, or if they are going to try to induce a rundown.

Just steal the bag is if nobody else is on.

    • Mark Moore

The only time you look is for the old hit-and-run so you can pick up the ball. That’s a lost art, so no reason to look at the catcher.

  9. Mark Moore

Not the start we wanted to see here. Throwing strikes is good. Throwing cookie strikes not so much.

  10. Roger Garrett

After the top of the first does anybody think this team is learning anything about base running or just putting the ball in play?No No No.Rockies come out ready to hit.Load the plane.

  11. Hanginwithem

Much has been made about the starting pitching this year. To this point of the season, they have performed well. At some point, the number of innings pitched for each pitcher will become a focal point. As for the starters, only Greene appears on track to surpass last year’s total. Ashcraft and Abbott are tracking about the same as last year. Lodolo and Montas were non-factors. To put a number on this year’s expected number of innings pitched, based on past performances, 700 from the starters would seem optimistic. To expect the bullpen and “openers” and call-ups to effectively cover the remaining 758 (+/-) innings becomes the elephant in the room.
When the trade deadline approaches and if this team is still in the mix, they will be searching for reinforcements along with every other contender. Now would be the time to identify and pursue those arms that will carry them into and through the playoffs.

    • VaRedsFan

Brandon Williamson can be some relief for needed innings.

    • AllTheHype

Injuries aside, Martinez, Williamson, and potentially Spiers can provide plenty of innings to fill that gap. If one or more starters gets injured, then plan B.

    • AllTheHype

By the way, in 2023 the ML average IP for each team’s starting pitchers was 832.

So if the current group covers 700, that only leaves a 132 or so gap in innings.

      • Hanginwithem

Essentially, yes. 130 inning gap. Cover that effectively and you greatly enhance your chances of playoffs.

  12. Don

This has the makings of a day in which Ashcraft’s ERA goes haywire.

  13. Pablo

The wheels have come off completely.

  14. Mark Moore

And there you have it, folks. A perfectly good afternoon shot to pot in the first inning.

I know it’s Coors and practically no lead is safe, but …

  15. JB

I’m thinking Ashcraft is pitching for his spot in the rotation. When Williamson is ready I think he switches with Ashcraft.

    • Don

I tend to agree. Williamson isn’t exactly an ace, but the Reds can’t continue to run Ashcraft out there every fifth day. He has given up three ERs or more in seven of his last nine starts. That ain’t gonna cut it.

  16. VaRedsFan

Why is Will B playing 5 steps from the warning track?

  17. Roger Garrett

Ball game already.BIG BIG BIG Game and they stink it up at the plate and on the mound in the first inning.

  18. JB

I’m not sure how that didn’t hit Steer in the face.

  19. Jeremiah

I like De La Cruz aggressiveness, but he tried to steal 2nd with first and third with no outs? Got to know when to reign in the aggressiveness. Seemed to hurt the momentum there.

    • VaRedsFan

I’m more than happy with him stealing there. Not happy with him looking in at the catcher while he was running. See above.

  20. Dennis Westrick

Well this is ugly! We run ourselves out of the 1st inning and fail to score a runner from 3rd with NO OUTS!

Then GA comes out and starts throwing batting practice!

Oh well, at least we had a winning series and a winning road trip!

  21. Pablo

Ashcraft got roped and is lucky to have gotten out with “only” 4 runs scored.

    • Don

Yeah, it probably would have been even worse had the Rockies not been so inept at baserunning.

  22. dimondfvr

Ashcraft isn’t fooling anybody! Down 4-0!!!

  23. RedsGettingBetter

Ashcraft throwing a lot of meatballs put the Reds in an early hole 0-4 facing an old former Cardinal Reds Killer Dakota Hudson…

  24. magi210

Bit of a hole to climb out of here. Let’s get the bats going.

  25. Mark A Verticchio

Ashcraft is pitching himself out of the rotation as soon as Williamson is ready.

  26. Dennis Westrick

27-pitch 1st inning for GA with 4 runs allowed! May be time to move him to the BP and try somebody else in the SP rotation!

  27. Gpod

Ashcraft can find himself out of the starting rotation anytime now

  28. Roger Garrett

Reds are not going to change who they are and that is why leadership just has to go.If your going to just throw the bats, balls and gloves out on the field and say go play then thats exactly what they will do.There holding Elly,a lefty is at the plate, its first and third with no outs and its ok to say DON”T STEAL.How hard can that be?I want to stop being so hard on this team but the lack of leadership is just so obvious.Good grief if they can’t figure it out on their own then you have to tell them

    • VaRedsFan

Disagree with not wanting him to steal.
The manager should jump on him for looking in at the catcher…doubt that conversation happened.

      • Dan

I’m with you, VaRedsFan. That’s a great place to try to steal – stay out of the DP, get to where a single can score 2 runs – plus Elly’s success rate at SB’s this year is WELL over 80%.

It just didn’t work out that time. It happens. (I’m not watching, but just reacting to the box score and the game situation…)

You can’t second guess just b/c that one didn’t work out. Given the game situation, it was a smart move, IMO.

  29. LarkinPhillips

Good at bat by Hurt-the-Beast! I like to root for that kid. Tough start to this game, but it’s Coors field so anything can happen.

  30. Gpod

You give an average pitcher 4 runs to work with out of the gate, you’re just asking for trouble…..if Ashcraft gets into trouble in the 2nd….gotta pull him

  31. Jeremiah

I think still time to comeback being in Denver, but not if they get down too much too early here.

I still prefer Ashcraft’s stuff over Williamson, but Ashcraft had to pick ot up I’m next several starts I’d say. I think he’s got at least 3 more starts before a move would be made.

  32. DHud

Every time this team starts to give you just a LITTLE BIT of hope…

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! Being a Reds fan in the Bell era is like being a drug addict! Just enough good stuff, like a win now and then, to keep you coming back!

    • Roger Garrett

Its just what they do.Even in a win they have to many issues.Last night the Rockies manager got 4 innings out of his pull pen and all 3 had ERA’s way north of 5.The Reds got 2 hits the last 4 innings. The Reds also had 3 errors. Its just who they are and what they do and only a change of leadership will change that.

  33. JB

Marte can’t get here quick enough. Lord Candy sucks.

    • Gpod

you would think he every played 3rd base before

    • Melvin

Besides the fact that he can’t catch or throw very well he’s pretty good. 😉

      • JB

Somebody at the beginning of the year said he was good defensively. Must of been drunk.

      • Melvin

Maybe he WAS but he ain’t now. 🙂

  34. Mark Moore

Get through the 2nd without further damage and I think we have a fighter’s chance.

And then we get the lollipop throw after a less-than-clean field from Candy. Cowboy is calling him out without naming him.

  35. Don

Candelario has just been awful defensively lately.

  36. Mark Moore

I always think Blackmon has a couple of squirrels (or at least chipmunks) living in that beard.

    • Dennis Westrick

Blackmon looks like he just wandered onto the playing field after living in a Colorado forest for years!

  37. RedsGettingBetter

Candelario making his usual throwing error each game

    • JB

Honestly I’m just impressed he caught it. That’s how bad he is.

      • Melvin

He and Moose would be close defensively. Maybe he’s not THAT bad. lol

  38. Dennis Westrick

Better 2nd inning for GA! Not perfect but I’ll take the scoreless inning!

Now, let the comeback begin! One run at a time!

    • VaRedsFan

Do you mean GA not perfect because someone committed an error.
      How is that on GA?

  39. Melvin

Friedl hit again. I don’t know why every player doesn’t wear an elbow protector. Very dangerous getting hit there.

    • VaRedsFan

agree….and everything from the knee down would be bubble wrapped for me.

  40. Dennis Westrick

Another Reds batter HBP! Good grief!

  41. Dennis Westrick

I guess some, but not all is forgiven? Nice 2-run shot by the Candy Man!

  42. Melvin

Candelario with the HR. DH is the spot for him except Stephenson has to hit there when not catching.

  43. RedsGettingBetter

CAndelario put the Reds back in the game…Ashcraft needs to settle

  44. Dennis Westrick

Key inning coming up for GA! 3, 4 & 5 hitters for the Rockies and your team just cut the 4-run mess you made in the first in half!

  45. dimondfvr

The Candy man made that one satisfying and delicious!

  46. Mark Moore

Get out of the 3rd unscathed and then continue to climb back into it. Nice job by Elly with that 2nd out.

  47. Mark Moore

And Elly adds to his defensive highlight reel!!!

    • Mark Moore

Fun call from Cowboy there. I’m sure Sadak about lost his mind.

  48. Dennis Westrick

Another Houdini act by GA to escape the 3rd unscathed!

  49. EnglishDude

I was worried about GA pitching here before the game, and here we are. Does he have options? Right now I’d be happy to see Spiers given a shot as our #5.

    • Melvin

Funny how this time last year we’d be happy for him pitching. lol Our overall starting pitching is pretty good this year. Can’t waste it. Let’s make our team better Mr. Krall.

  50. Melvin

Good play by EDLC there. Flashes of defensive brilliance? 🙂

    • Mark Moore

Those two were more than flashes. They were fully lit neon billboards. Let’s see if that provides enough juice for the boyz to bust it open.

      • Melvin

A walk to start an inning is always good.

  51. JB

And there’s the customary Reds pickoff.

    • Melvin

Welsh actually made a strong statement, “We get picked off too way too much”. Usually don’t get something like that from a Reds announcer out of fear. lol Miss the days of Marty telling it like it is.

  52. Melvin

I wonder if we lead the league in being picked off.

  53. VaRedsFan

Jake adds to his Guiness record of poor baserunning blunders.
He leads the next closest by miles.

  54. dimondfvr

Ran ourselves out of another opportunity!

    • Melvin

It’s bad enough being picked off 1B but being picked off in scoring position is a lot worse.

  55. RedsGettingBetter

Wow this situation of runners caught frequently is not possible at this level… Fraley has been caught many times…Killed the inning and helped Hudson a lot

    • Melvin

Too bad Joe Morgan is not around anymore to teach em. If someone is trying to teach em it’s not getting through.

  56. Dennis Westrick

Two (2) TOOTBLANS by Reds runners so far! Incredible!

  57. Roger Garrett

Four hits in the last 8 innings and another out on the bases.Trust me until the master of ceremonies is fired the circus we call the Reds will continue to please us and then surely disappoint us.Where is VInce Lombardi when you need him to holler WHAT THE YOU KNOW is going on out there.

  58. Dennis Westrick

If GA runs into trouble in the 4th or 5th inning, I hope Bell is not napping and has someone ready to bring in like a Nick Martinez!

This is still a winnable game!

    • Indy Red Man

There you go. Moll didn’t break right away and that cost him, but he got it done. He’s pretty good!

  59. 50thyearRedsfan

We get 2 guys on base with no outs against a struggling pitcher who has never won in his own ballpark. Elly tries to steal 2nd which is great because if he didn’t I would be frustrated by the groundball double play that could happen if he doesn’t run. But why did Freel not break for home? There is no way they could tag Elly at 2nd and then throw home in time to get Freel, they would have to catch the ball at 2nd and fire it directly home so one or both of our guys would be safe. Situational awareness is lacking I believe in this case.

  60. Dennis Westrick

    If it’s not a 2-out walk it’s a HBP! Good grief GA!

    • Melvin

The problems with Ashcraft most of the time are between his ears in my view.

  61. RedsGettingBetter

Ashcraft is turning into a Luke Weaver version step by step…

  62. 50thyearRedsfan

What is going on with Ashcraft? He pitches great at times then one thing goes wrong and he implodes. Is this another stretch like last year where he has a 9something era for a dozen starts before he figures it out and starts dominating for the next dozen starts? I do not understand this guy and apparently neither does the pitching coach, go review the videos on his pitching motion or whatever and then get back to being good again.

  63. Melvin

More bad fundamentals by our pitcher?

    • Mark Moore

Yep. And then he starts to lose his focus with Tovar.

  64. Mark Moore

Moll made the pitch he needed to and then decided to watch the play instead of cover. Cowboy again taking him to task for that. As many have said, he seems like he’d be pretty good as a manager or pitching coach. I just doubt he wants to put up with the BS associated with those roles.

    • Melvin

Yeah. I don’t think he’d enjoy it but there would be a lot less nonsense if he were the manager.

  65. Mark Moore

A little redemption from Candy as long as Bud Black doesn’t challenge it.

  66. Mark A Verticchio

The Reds fundamentals are as bad as it gets, so sad and hard to watch.

    • Melvin

More often than not is comes back to bite us in close games.

    • Dennis Westrick

Agree! But what is most frustrating is where is the accountability? No longer “teaching moments”! Fundamentals should have been learned in Little League, High School and College!

      • Melvin

Yeah. Don’t get me fired up again. 🙂

  67. Dennis Westrick

The Reds, at times, display the worst baseball fundamentals! They make the Bad News Bears look like World Series champs!

  68. Roger Garrett

Bell won’t fix something he allowed to happen from day one.It will take someone from outside of the family to come in and fix it.That will not happen so we just get some more popcorn and peanuts and watch the circus.

  69. 50thyearRedsfan

One thing you gotta love about India is the professional at bats he gives, it’s not unusual for his plate appearances to go ten pitches or more. I know a lot of fans are down on him but we have no one better to replace him right now and overall he is better than average. And he plays with the right attitude.

  70. Melvin

Alright Friedl! HR! What do you think about that guy JB?

  71. Mark Moore

Up in the “jet stream” per Cowboy and that’s what happens!!

Going to be a bullpen race to the finish. Let’s see if Elly can advance without getting thrown out.

  72. Daytonnati

I used to call Jay Bruce – Jay “Quickly 0-2” Bruce. I think Benson has deservedly inherited the title …

    And Friedl for the tie!

  73. Indy Red Man

The boys are playing with confidence.

  74. 50thyearRedsfan

Awesome Friedl! Lets get this pitcher sent to the showers!

  75. JB

Reds players picked off at first:
    Fairchild -2

Reds runners picked off at 2nd

    • Melvin

How does that rank with the rest of the league Mr. Stat Guy? 😉

      • JB

No idea. I got bored and curious and went back through the games. I would be surprised if anybody is worse. I mean 11 times!

      • Melvin

Not even halfway through the season.

    • Melvin

Eleven times is a lot no matter what.

  76. Mark Moore

Stallings for the stall with a “Pitch Com issue” …

Just lift one for a sac fly, Spencer. Anything else we’ll consider gravy.

  77. Indy Red Man

Can we stay in Denver please?

  78. Mark Moore

“Victor Vodnik. That sounds like a Russian Cosmonaut.” – The Cowboy

    😛 😀 🙂 😉

    • Melvin

The pop out by Steer with less than tow outs killed us that inning. That’s okay. We’re gonna come back and win this one. 🙂

  79. Indy Red Man

Fraley is regaining that lift in his swing. Just missed 7-4

  80. Mark Moore

And our squandered opportunities immediately come back to bite us in the collective butt.

  81. Melvin

Gonna have to score some more runs. Down one again. Not unexpected in this park

  82. Daytonnati

Is that Richard Petty in the seats behind home plate 🙂

    • JB

I’m not sure there is enough beer in the stadium to make me wear that purple cowboy hat.

  83. Indy Red Man

Vodnik has high leverage stuff. Let’s take him back with us

  84. Mark Moore

Well, we all know what need here.

A little Pig Kicking music, maestro.

  85. Matt McWax

    There’s the 2 bloops, now….

  86. Indy Red Man

Slow CF helped Elly out. Feels like Rox never have burners out there when they should

  87. Melvin

Wasted an opportunity that inning. Still got time.

  88. RedsGettingBetter

Too much wasted oportunities by the Reds so far…

  89. Indy Red Man

All the times they run the bases like T ball then when we really need a steal they stay pat?

  90. Mark Moore

Wasted opportunities and shaky fundamentals. Our calling cards.

  91. VaRedsFan

No way do you ever bring Sims in with runners on base.
    Cruz all day.

    • LarkinPhillips

Seems if you took Cruz out after 10 pitches last night, this situation would be the reason to use him. Guess not.

  92. Indy Red Man

Sims the arsonist at work, but it was actually the defensive alignment

  93. Melvin

Friedl just doesn’t have much arm. A move to LF eventually will do him good.

    • VaRedsFan

No he doesn’t but nobody is going to throw out a guy from that deep.
He should have hit the cutoff man, and pegged the guy going to 2nd.

For millionth time, we keep seeing this same mistake.

  94. JB

Sims is doing his best to put it out of reach.

  95. Gpod

The only way the reds are gonna pull out of this hole they dug for themselves and at least get back to 500…. is to sweep some series against bad teams, not take 2 out of 3…this is a series that you definitely could have swept ……6 outs to maybe make it happen….Sims not helping

  96. RedsGettingBetter

As I expected, after a Reds masterful pitching yesterday, today would be likely productive day for the Rockies so the Reds should’ve to hit and score a lot of runs to win…

  97. LDS

Keeping Wilson and sending Young down – I still don’t see a justification

  98. VaRedsFan

Pagan is back tomorrow, who goes down.
    It better not be Moll.
Either of the two that just pitched, Sims/Wilson can go.
Who cares if they get claimed.

  99. Dennis Westrick

Don’t know about the rest of you on this site but I’m pretty much over the Sims show!

  100. JB

Surprising stat- Cruz is second in NL for inherited runs scored at 22. Sims at 12 or 14 now. Wilson -15

  101. LarkinPhillips

RBI Triple for Hurt-the-beast and speed allows him to score on a short shallow fly to left. 1 run game.

Magic 10 Ks again! Benson adding 3 more to his total. Need to hold them and score some more in the 9th with top of the order up

  103. Indy Red Man

Sims kind of cheated by the Reds playing their C so far up the middle? You know he’s throwing sliders away so why? Of course they have their spray charts, but thats 4-6-3 and saves us 2 runs normally.

Yeah, that’s why he was in there to get the DP

    • VaRedsFan

Hurtubise dropping the fly ball was the biggest killer

  104. Gpod

Reds are doing everything possible not to win this game

Plus the Rookies are trying their best to help the Reds. lol Way to go Cruz!

  105. DW

Really wish Bell would have let Martinez go more than two innings.

  106. Roger Garrett

Just checked back in to see all the moves Bell made and he found several guys that didn’t have it.First and third to start the game and again in the 5th with less then 2 outs and that will be game set and match.Throw in the pick off and thats who we are but this team will fight and scratch and claw on most nights.Got to love em for that but unless they cut down on the mistakes and address a couple of black holes in the pen well it ain’t going to get much better then win a few lose a few and soon the cry of playoffs.Guess its what we live for a few months each spring and summer.GO REDS

  107. RedsGettingBetter

Good zero, let’s turn things around!

  108. LarkinPhillips

Chaotic bottom of 8th there. Houdini act by Reds and Cruz. Let’s get a couple here in the 9th and steal the game!

  109. Old-school

Rockies saw Reds get thrown out on the bases and say …Wait . Hold my beer. Watch this!

    • Roger Garrett

Yeah and somebody will win this game and you can look at both teams record and you don’t have to wonder how they got there.

  110. Indy Red Man

3-0 count if Freidl just takes 2-0. Got lucky though

    • Indy Red Man

Little guy 2-0 count leadoff. Absolutely take

  111. LarkinPhillips

Absolutely hit Friedl. You can see the shirt ripple. Should be a quick review here. Big lead off runner! Come on ELLY!

  112. LarkinPhillips

5 straight balls now. Have patience Elly!

    • Jason Franklin

I think the kid just gets antsy when the count is going his way. Hopefully he learns to allow the balls to come his way.

  113. Dennis Westrick

Milwaukee losing in the 8th to the Phillies! Dirty Birds have already won! Stupid Cubs and Pie-Rats play later tonight!

How the Rockies did not score in the bottom of the 8th is something right out of the Reds playbook!

  114. RedsGettingBetter

STEER! waiting the 4SFB to crush it!

  115. magi210

  116. VaRedsFan

    Spencer Steeeeeerrrrr…..DEEEEP

  117. DW

It would sure be nice to pad that lead with how inconsistent Diaz is this year.

  118. Dennis Westrick

Please, please, please Mr. Bell! Let Cruz finish this game! Somebody send Diaz to the snack bar on the other side of Coors Field!

    • Jason Franklin

Agreed. See if Cruz can and let Diaz be ready/maybe a lefty too if needed? Cruz, in case you guys didn’t know, has the best splitter in the game. Let him throw it.

      • VaRedsFan

        It won’t be Cruz.
He pitched yesterday, and this has been a long inning.

  119. Dennis Westrick

If Diaz comes in for the bottom of the 9th, I will need to make a run to the pharmacy at Publix!

  120. LarkinPhillips

Dunn over Fairchild is an interesting decision.

    • LarkinPhillips

Now we try to steal 3rd there?? This game makes no sense at all today

  121. Roger Garrett

Come on kid get your first big league hit.

  122. DW

I can’t see the game to know if there is some unique situation, but Fraley attempting to steal third there is another stupid base running decision. Really gain nothing and could end the inning if thrown out.

  123. Jason Franklin

Pretty impressed so far by Dunn and Hurtubise. Good patience.

  124. VaRedsFan

Just because Jake was safe doesn’t make that play OK.
    Very dumb actually.

    • Redlegs1869

100%. Serves no purpose at all with two outs

    • magi210

Agreed. He may have tried because the third baseman was playing off the bag a bit, it took a nice play to make it close.

    • JB

Really no reason to take the base. I really don’t like when a team is out of challenges they can ask the umps to take a look at it. What is the sense of being out of challenges

    • Jason Franklin

It was pretty dumb. I wonder if the signs got messed-up or something? Only reason to do that , I guess, is that you hope the catcher or pitcher mess up the throw and it allows your baserunner to score? Who knows.

    • DW

So how do all of us armchair coaches at home know this, but a MLB regular doesn’t? Just crazy. These are common sense baseball fundamentals.

  125. Gpod

all i ask is just one more run here….please!!

  126. Mark Moore

I’ll admit I don’t understand it all, but how does Black get to initiate a “crew chief challenge” after he burned his standard challenge? Can the umpires decline the request? It still went to NYC for review.

    • JB

I just said that above. What’s the sense of having no challenges left. Stupid.

  127. RedsGettingBetter

  128. Mark Moore

    And a 4-RBI BIG FLY!!!

We’re out of slam range. Way to go RoY India!!!

  129. Jason Franklin

Holy crap man. Is that India’s second this year?

  130. Moon

My Goodness what a crazy game. Go Reds!

  131. Mark Moore

Thrall reminding us they’ve all come with 2 outs on the board. Batted around.

    I’m feeling a bit more optimistic for a sweep here … 😮

  132. Redlegs1869

I only feel slightly more comfortable now with Diaz coming in.

  133. Indy Red Man

Bell had him right where he wanted him)). Their 2 relievers in the middle were nasty, but that was some pathetic work in the 8th-9th….thankfully

India lowest chase rate in Mlb. Figures I have to watch other broadcasts to learn about my team

8 runs in the last two innings, Thanks Rockies! Sorry for the fans but we know how it feels to have games like this.

  135. Redlegs1869

    Actually Suter. So good enough.

  136. Mark Moore

Suter should be the right guy to finish this. If any of out staff knows Coors, it’s him.

And a generous backwards K (again on McMahon).

  137. JB

The Reds with 42 hits this series and 29 runs. Crazy game.

  138. Indy Red Man

Ok who had India with 5 rbis batting 8th and Candy stealing 2 bases?

  139. Mark Moore

India, Steer, or both for the Jim Day interview?

  140. RedsGettingBetter

Reds sweep Rockies! Finale game in a vintage way…..Great momentum to go back at Cincy

  141. DW

What a great series to build momentum off of. Hopefully it gets carried over to the series with stupid Cubs.

  142. Jason T.

What a fun game to watch! Awesome comeback. Huge to get the sweep.

  143. Dennis Westrick

Just got back from the pharmacy! What did I miss?

    • Indy Red Man

You’re kidding right. Just a 2 out HR to take the lead then a granny on top of that.

      • Dennis Westrick

Of course I’m kidding! I have enough prescription meds to last me until the end of the season!

      • Melvin

“Of course I’m kidding! I have enough prescription meds to last me until the end of the season!”

hahaha 😀 I had to take a break from posting doing something else but could still see the game on mute. Great comeback. 🙂

  144. Indy Red Man

They said league average ops is .698. Literally every Reds starter is over that now

    • LarkinPhillips

Stats are looking better after this Coors field trip. Nobody (that started today) is under .200 now either I believe.

    • Matt McWax

I just noticed that 8 of the 9 starters had normalized into the .700 to .799 range. That’s pretty unusual. I expect Hurtubise to get up there too and likely some will bang their way back above .800.
