After sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, the Cincinnati Reds (23-30) welcome the St, Louis Cardinals (25-26) to town. This will be only the fourth game and second series the Reds have played against NL Central teams. The Cardinals are currently riding a five-game winning streak and have won 1o of their last 12. However, this current stretch was preceded by a seven-game losing streak. It’s been very much a roller coaster ride for the Cardinals in May.

Left-hander Nick Lodolo makes his return to the mound and will be opposed by veteran pitcher Lance Lynn. First pitch is at 4:10 PM EDT from Great American Ball Park on this Memorial Day afternoon.

Lance Lynn

Veteran pitcher Lance Lynn is back in St. Louis, the place where he started his career 13 years ago. Through ten games, he’s having the best start to his season in about three years. The 3.68 ERA is a little deceiving, however. In the month of May, Lynn has given up 15 runs on 19 hits in 20.2 innings. His ERA is 5.23 over four starts in May, compared to a 3.04 ERA in five April starts.

When Lynn has struggled this season, it’s been the first inning. He has a 5.40 ERA in the first inning, compared to an ERA under 2.00 in the second through fourth innings. It would seem that the Reds could help themselves a lot today if they are able to jump out to an early lead, or at least make Lynn throw a lot of pitches early. Lynn also has not done well the third time through the lineup, with batters hitting .306/.444/.611 against him.

Nick Lodolo

Lodolo makes his return to the rotation this afternoon after being on the IL with a groin strain since May 15. Lodolo had been pitching really well this season, up until his last two starts. In May, he had allowed eight runs in 11.0 innings in starts against the Orioles and Giants. Maybe it was the injury, but he didn’t look quite the same as he did in April when he had a 1.88 ERA across four starts.

Much like his counterpart today in Lynn, Lodolo’s biggest struggles have come in the first inning. He’s allowed nine runs, including three home runs, in the first inning, but once he settles down, he’s been lights out. Even when he faces the lineup a third time, batters are only hitting .207/.258/.276 against him.

News and Notes

Today’s Roster Move

The Reds needed to make a roster move to bring Lodolo back, and Carson Spiers was the odd man out even though he pitched excellently against the Dodgers yesterday.

Reds Farm System Updates

If you missed it, the Reds made some moves within the minor leagues yesterday, including a promotion and two signings.

Memorial Day Honors

Although Memorial Day is for those who died in service, it’s still neat to see that the Reds will honor a 99-year-old World War II veteran this afternoon. John Sadak posted a link earlier today to a story about Walter Stitt that ran in the Dayton Daily News last week:

Ah yes! The Dirty Birds! A team only a mother could love! They are the NY Yankees of the NL in my opinion!

Time to extend the winning streak against a NL Central Division rival!

The key to success against Lance Lynn is having PATIENCE during each at bat! Lynn is no longer the power pitcher he was earlier in his career and will walk his share of batters!

Let’s score early & often and welcome Lodolo back with a bunch of runs!

  2. Old-school

Military service member leading off on Memorial day. Lets go!
Thanks to all who have served and sacrificed to give us our freedoms.

My grandfather fought Adolph hitler and came home victorious! His stories of crossing the Atlantic with sea sickness everywhere and getting bombed in Scotland on arrival were ugly.

  3. Redsgettingbetter

The Reds have struggled against divisional rivals in recent years especially Brewers, Cards and Pirates.. Hopefully the things will turn around this year

  4. LarkinPhillips

Happy Memorial Day RLN! Let’s keep streaking against the dirty birds! To paraphrase Mark, Time to punt a farm animal!

  5. JB

Good job Candy Man. I can’t stand the Cardinals.

  6. VaRedsFan

Candy answers the Goldy tater with one of his own

  7. VaRedsFan

Lynn and Jonathan Broxton might share the same dietician.

    • JB

I was thinking he was Mike Ford and Burleson was Ford on a one week diet.

  8. Indy Red Man

Candy up to .723 ops. Can he get over .800 again? Thats probably about his ceiling since he’s so streaky, but we’d take it

  9. JB

Benson going the other way. Like it !!!

  10. Daytonnati

    Benson giveth; Benson taketh away.

    • Mark A Verticchio

That was on Bell, called play.

  11. Indy Red Man

Benson? Why do we have to torpedo ourselves every stinking game?

    • Jason T.

That was bad, real bad. Have to be smarter than that.

  12. VaRedsFan

    Just a dumb play.
    Steal the bag Will.
You don’t have to give yourself up, trying for the little league home steal.

  13. JB

Hurtibeast with the hit. Really like this kid.

    • Jason T.

He’s really fun. Easy guy to root for too. He’s looked really good hitting and in the outfield.

  14. Old-school

    Will benson 10u baserunning. Tootblan

Hurtubise finds a way… sort of thanks to old man first base

  15. VaRedsFan

They gave us 5 outs that inning….We gave one of them back.

  16. JB

Lefties are going to have a long day against Lodolo.

  17. Old-school

    Hot take

Nick lodolo is chris sale and nasty

    Sign him to back up

    • LarkinPhillips

Unfortunately he tends to have sales injury history as well.

  18. Roger Garrett

Well we got Lynn’s pitch count up and then go out on 8 pitches. The second inning should have got him an early shower but the Benson fiasco and the DP by Candy well kept him around and we can’t wait to swing in the 3rd.One day as a team I feel we will get it but well we ain’t there yet.

    • VaRedsFan

I think they’d rather face Lynn than anyone in the bullpen.
Two guys hit it to the warning track that inning.

  19. Roger Garrett

Yep you right.Seven pitch walk and a first pitch DP follows.

  20. Roger Garrett

I just want the Reds to win and today’s pitching match up favors the Reds.Lynn is a veteran and when he’s bad he’s real bad.He has to nibble at this point in his career and if you are patient you can get him.If you swing at stuff a little off the plate he will never throw a strike. Now lets go get Lodolo some more runs and lets celebrate Memorial Day with a Reds victory.

    • JB

Or the ump can call a pitch way outside a strike and put Hurtubise in a hole. And then that crap to Elly. Swing early Reds. This ump will screw you

  21. LarkinPhillips

Letting the cardinals hang around is never a good plan. We need to add to this lead.

  22. Reddawg2012

    This umpire is complete garbage.

  23. JB

Larkin hasn’t said a word this whole at bat to Goldy. Sadak is basically flying solo. The dude is basically stealing money.

    • Reddawg2012

Lark offers almost nothing in the booth. It’s honestly kinda sad considering he’s a Reds legend.

      • Sam Feliciano

Cowboy is a much better analyst than Larkin. Brings so much more to the broadcast.

  24. Melvin

Hi guys. Looks like you and Lodolo are doing fine so far. 🙂

  25. VaRedsFan

Lodolo must be on a pitch count because there’s no other reason to pull him.

    • Roger Garrett

Yeah must be cause he gave up a hit to the lefty and then battled Goldy and got him.No other reason to pull him.

    • Jason T.

Must be. Only reason I guess to pull him. He was looking good. Even with crappy calls by the umpire.

  26. MEGGO

counting on our bullpen for 3.2 innings is risky business

    • VaRedsFan

Plus Diaz has been used 2 straight.

  27. Roger Garrett

Can we agree that Cruz is just nasty.Fastball at 95 and then that split at 80.Got to believe somewhere down the road he gets a chance to close.Going in I thought we may see that today. Lets just get a bunch more and let Buck go a couple of innings.

  28. Melvin

Happy Memorial Day by the way. A wholehearted thanks to ALL who have served and sacrificed so we can have the freedom to do even the little things like we are right now. I salute you. 🙂

  29. VaRedsFan

Cruz continues to show that he’s regained his form….nice work.

    • Jason T.

He’s absolutely dealing so far. Looks fantastic!

  30. JB

This ump is rediculous. Heck with working the count. Swing early boys.

  31. Reddawg2012

I want to complain that the offense isn’t adding on, but it’s kind of hard when this umpire keeps calling pitches well of the place for strike 3.

  32. RedBB

Anyone that doesn’t want Robo Umps is insane…this ump should not get paid for this garbage performance.

      • LarkinPhillips

+1000. The challenge system takes care of this mess quickly.

  33. RedsGettingBetter

What horrible calls from the ump, but the most against Reds… I think Bell should throw a chair soon

    • Dennis Westrick

Would love to see Bell rip out first base and toss it like Lou Pinella!

  34. Roger Garrett

WOW.Tyler is behind the plate and if anybody knows how the ump is calling pitches it ought to be him yet he takes 3 straight strikes.Got to believe the Cards are getting the calls

  35. VaRedsFan

The sad thing is Manfred just stated that there would be no changes before 2026.
They brought out the pitch clock…bigger bases…ect very quickly, but this has been in the works for 3-4 years now.

  36. JB

You would think it was 1994 and Maddox,Glavine and Smoltz were pitching with this strike zone.

  37. JB

Wow Pages is a big boy too. Krall needs to trade them Ford.

  38. Melvin

Cruz got it done without any two out trouble.

  39. LarkinPhillips

Outstanding job by Cruz! Let’s add on now boys!

  40. RedsGettingBetter

    My goodness Fernando Cruz unhittable….

  41. Optimist

    It’s gonna be Sims 8th/Diaz 9th isn’t it? That’s the formula, correct?

    • Melvin

Whatever it is let’s hope it works.

    • RedsGettingBetter

Díaz has back-to-back outings …I’m not sure he’d be available

    • VaRedsFan

Diaz has thrown 2 straight….not so sure.

  42. VaRedsFan

Lefty in…so we should get Fairchild in for Will

  43. Roger Garrett

Well Cruz is done for today and probably tomorrow so is it Sims and DIaz?Lets get 4 or 5 more so it won’t matter much please.

  44. JB

I thought Fairchild got it. Nice tag by Jon

    • LarkinPhillips

Fairchild is doing very well in this role. All you can ask is hit it hard which he did. Plus he is playing good defense so a late game defensive upgrade.

  45. Melvin

Hurtubise not good against lefties evidently?

    • LarkinPhillips

I think it is more Liberatore is very good against lefties. Hurtubuise had some.left on left action the other day.

  46. Roger Garrett

Bell going all in right here and well lets see how we defend in the 8th.

    • VaRedsFan

      Espy 3rd
      Candy 1st
      Steer LF
      Stu CF

  47. LarkinPhillips

Complete pitch around of Elly to get to Candy. He needs to make them pay for that!

  48. RedBB

Meh..this is setting up for a blown lead and loss

    • VaRedsFan

      Lost opportunities are piling up.

  49. Reddawg2012

Man. Would have been really nice to make them pay for walking the bases loaded.

  50. RedsGettingBetter

    They are wasting chances…

  51. Roger Garrett

Steer has to take a strike.Five out of his first 6 pitches were called balls.Patience please the next time.

  52. Optimist

    Moll time! Excellent. But, the 9th . . .

  53. Roger Garrett

Got to admit I forgot about Moll.

  54. Melvin

Krall DID make a good trade for Sam Moll. He’s been good for us. Needs to make MORE. Let’s win.

  55. LarkinPhillips

Good inning by Moll. Just checked in on Joe Boyle for fun. 7.16 era this year. 23 walks in 24 innings.

    • Optimist

He’s on the IL, but he’s still young – many of us still following him. Still, Moll is the type of reliever they have not had for quite a while.

      • LarkinPhillips

I always liked Boyle. I still see him as a high leverage reliever rather than a starter though.

  56. VaRedsFan

Sadak said Sims was warming last inning.
    Here he comes.
    Grabbing my Pepto.

    • JB

At least Sims is starting the inning. The guy scares me when he Inherits runners.

  57. RedsGettingBetter

Sims to the 9th…. Crossed fingers and hold your bu…

  58. JB WV

Praying to the baseball gods to help Simms

  59. Reddawg2012

I’d have more confidence in Buck Farmer than Lucas Sims right now.

    Prove me wrong, Lucas.

  60. Melvin

He IS scary sometimes. Hope he gets it done.

  61. Roger Garrett

Sims has good stuff but he is finding too much of the plate at times which has hurt so far.Good time to get it together.

  62. Melvin

He did it. Four in a row. The miracle continues. 🙂

  63. Jason T.

Fantastic pitching and great divisional win! Let’s keep it going!

  64. VaRedsFan

I’ve been hard on Sims, but he has delivered lately.
    Good on you sir!

  65. LarkinPhillips

Great win to start this series! Heck of a job by the pitching! Always good to beat the devil birds!

  66. Roger Garrett

Yes sir.Reds win and for the third straight game the other team scores exactly one run.Pitching was lights out and no walks.

  67. RedsGettingBetter

Huge win! Strong pitching again for 3rd game in a row just 1 run surrendered… First time they win 4 game in a row this season…
They need to score more runs…

  68. Reddawg2012

4 in a row! This is more like it!

  69. JB WV

My prayers were answered. Go Reds!!!

  70. Mark A Verticchio

Great win but, they need to score more runs. However they did have a few hard hit balls that seemed to die. It would be nice to get a healthy a productive Freidl back and Strand shortly after. Marte will be back after 26 more games and let’s all keep our fingers crossed for Mclain sometime.
