Brent Suter

The Reds are going with a bullpen day today and lefty Brent Suter drew the start from the group. He’s thrown multiple innings several times this season, topping out at 3.1 innings against the Angels on April 21st.

He’s much better against left-handed hitters, who have a lower average, rarely walk, and haven’t hit for as much power as righties have against him. Right-handed hitters have a good average against him, a solid walk rate, and hit for a little bit of power.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto

The sample size is still small in the big leagues for the Dodgers $325,000,000 pitcher, but through 10 starts he’s shown reverse splits. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a far higher average and are hitting for a good amount of power against him. Left-handed hitters are hitting just .189 and are showing very little power. Neither group walks much or makes much contact against him.

Three in a row let’s go. I like the bunting put the ball in play and see what happens

    • LarkinPhillips

Two straight days with sac hunts, two straight wins, coincidence? Haha

  2. LarkinPhillips

No Candy again today? Is he available off the bench or trending towards a DL stint?

Suter for 1st 3 then change or I wonder if they extend him further? I assume Spiers will be first out and maybe Kennedy mops up several innings if needed. He is probably gone tomorrow for Lodolo.

  3. GreatRedLegsFan

Hurtubise looking very good, good contact, speed and defense, his third at bat last night against Buehler was outstanding.

    • Jason T.

Really like his moxie. He looks like a veteran at the plate. Shows good discipline and seems like a good ball player. He’s been really fun to watch.

  4. Mauired

Reds 4 Wins 15 Losses when taking Stephenson out of the lineup and subbing Maile.

    .266 winning percentage

You would think the genius analytical Bell would understand that’s not working and put Stephenson in the DH spot today.

But I guess it’s better to stack up Ls just in case Maile has to leave the game and they lose the DH spot for a couple at bats.

    • Mark A Verticchio

I have been complaining about that as well. You think a man who supposedly looks at stats as well as Bell could figure that out. 4 and 15 speaks for itself.

      • Mauired

It the type of losing move that drags down a season.

How many of those 15 losses would be wins if Stephenson at least DHd the entire game.

Even if just two more wins. That could be the difference between making the playoffs and not.

It’s why having a manager that writes a good lineup card is important for winning baseball.

    • Harry Stoner

Bell had a reasonably good game last night.
He basically let things happen without trying to ‘manage’ too much.
The moves he made were the obvious ones: Cruz-Moll-Diaz.
      PH Fairchild.

      Not expecting a replay today.
My hunch is that Bell will feel compelled to run Kennedy out there and LA will be ready to unload.

Would enjoy seeing Suter, Martínez and Spiers shut them down, but I have a hunch that after a brief interlude Bell Ball will make its return.

    • LDS

Bell and analytics – now that’s funny. Bell has demonstrated his innumeracy more times than I can count. And it was obvious that Maile would start. Bell calls that managing.

  5. Daytonnati

I hate the Dodgers, but cannot hate Mookie. He is money. I wish we had him.

  6. Reddawg2012

I don’t understand why Suter can be trusted to face Mookie Betts but not Teoscar Hernandez. I don’t mind using him as an opener but why not just let him try to finish out the inning?

  7. VaRedsFan

Suter out after 7 pitches. Martinez ….next man up

  8. jeffversion1

When you’re short on pitching so much so that you can’t put a legit starter out there, the answer is obviously to burn one after 7 pitches.

  9. Old-school

Espinal flashes the leather and in position guarding the line. Like his defense.

    Suter gets it done

    How good is mookie though?
Hes a right handed joe morgan. Just does it all and wins

    • Daytonnati

Good call, Morgan is the closest player we’ve had to Mookie.

  10. Old-school

Steer looks like hes settling in after a woeful may

    Nice ab for the double

  11. VaRedsFan

    Yamamotto is as advertised.
Tremendous stuff and command….in inning 1 at least.

  12. LarkinPhillips

Bell is supposed to be analytical. But we face a pitcher who owns lefties and right handers are hitting 260 so we load the lineup with left handers and leave Stephenson on the bench. Makes a lot of sense.

  13. RedsGettingBetter

I wonder if Bell will use Spiers or Kennedy today, especially on a tight game so far…

  14. LarkinPhillips

5 strike outs first time through the order. 36 pitches (4 per Ab) let’s see if the Reds make an adjustment second time through the order.

    • LarkinPhillips

Adjustments were indeed made! Nice to see!

  15. Daytonnati

Wonder if “Lark” wonders why they keep inviting Antone back?

    • LarkinPhillips

Haha. I still really like Antone. I wondered if it would be a just flash as it was different, but he has held up and really is good in the booth.

    • VaRedsFan

Antone was better than Lark on his 1st day in the booth

      • LarkinPhillips

We tend to always score when he is in there too. Can he get a two way contract for the rest of this year, player and commentator.

  16. RedsGettingBetter

India!!! recalling he’s a good hitter

  17. VaRedsFan

Oppo Indy is a competent hitter x 3

    • Melvin

I think that kind of hitting would benefit most of our hitters.

  18. VaRedsFan

    Martini better than Ford…..any objections?
    All in favor?

    • LarkinPhillips

Aye! I think Ford is easily the one to leave when the position spot is needed.

    • RedsGettingBetter

Aside the Reds FO/staff love him …Ford has his games numbering in Red uniform

  19. Daytonnati

Yamamoto, apparently, has “awoken a sleeping giant, and filled it with a terrible resolve.”

  20. VaRedsFan

4 runs in an inning…no homer necessary.
    That’s a nice crooked number.

  21. Reddawg2012

It’s about freaking time the Reds catch a couple breaks. Give me all the seeing eye singles and bloop base hits!

  22. Melvin

We already have six hits in three innings. 🙂

    • Melvin

It’s pouring here in Indy about when the race started. No Indy 500 so far.

  23. LarkinPhillips

Looks like about an hour before the rain gets there. We must protect this lead!

    • LarkinPhillips

Martinez has thrown ball one to all 4 batters this inning. He threw 66 pitches a few days ago. The leash has to be shortening on him.

      • Oldtimer

Martinez pitched 4.1 IP with 3 K, 1 H, and 0 BB. I don’t think it mattered to much that the first pitch in a particular inning to each batter was a ball. Not in that slightest.

  24. RedsGettingBetter

Martinez shoves…Another good outing against LAD from the bullpen…

  25. Mike Adams

Gotta get through the fifth– rain is near Rising Sun heading toward GABP

    • LarkinPhillips

Good bunt too. Great play by the pitcher to barely get him.

    • VaRedsFan

Yes, I hope getting thrown out doesn’t deter him from trying more.

      • VaRedsFan

Perhaps try it against a lefty….should he ever find himself facing one again (he shouldn’t)

    • VaRedsFan

I’m a fan of the city connects. Some aren’t.
Not as big a fan of the hats though.

      • Melvin

I just like a logo out in CF. Looks cool either way.

  26. Optimist

    Martinez – game MVP – it’s official.

  27. JB Wv

Reds have finally found their long man.

  28. LarkinPhillips

Looks like when the rain gets there, it will be there til around 6. Not sure dodgers will want to wait that long to hit the road.

    • Melvin

Maybe they’ll figure they don’t need the win that bad. 😉

      • TR

I doubt the Dodgers will be too happy if the Reds sweep the series.

  29. Melvin

Dodgers lost 6 out of their last 10 and still have a 5 1/2 game lead in their division. We should have it so rough. haha

    • Optimist

Yep – finish it. Even suspend it – saves the pen for a follow-up 1/2 DHer. Pocket the 4 run lead and get ready for Lodolo.

  30. VaRedsFan

Antone saying Spiers was warmed up and is likely burned for the day.
I’m hoping they can eventually call this one official.

    • VaRedsFan

If that’s the case, they should have warmed Kennedy.
      Hindsight and all.

    • Melvin

If it’s like here in Indy it will be at least be a couple of hours.

  31. RedsGettingBetter

I’m not sure if this delay help the Reds guessing the game will resume …On the other hand, I think it’s a official game if it’s rained-out definetly so the Reds could get the W in a shortened match

    • Optimist

Dodgers with a day game tomorrow vs the Mets, so doubtful they want to arrive in NYC late, late tonight.

  32. Jason T.

Antone is just a natural speaker, not just of baseball, but life. What an amazing human being he is.

  33. LarkinPhillips

Sadaks voice is made for commentary and he is always super prepared. Whenever he is with anyone other than larkin he is so much better, sometimes even enjoyable. Hopefully this is larkins last year in the booth.

    • Melvin

Seems like he might be a decent hitting instructor. Just not a manager.

      • LarkinPhillips

Maybe put him in the same role that eric Davis is in, floating special instructor.

      • Melvin

Seems like he could be valuable in some way.

  34. LarkinPhillips

Rain delay topic: do you think the blue Jay’s would take Mike Ford and cash for Votto?

    • Melvin

haha I doubt it would take much to get Votto back if we really wanted. I’m in.

      • Oldtimer

I think Joey would say Go Pound Salt to coming back to the Reds.

  35. Eddiek957

I dig TJ in the booth. I think he makes the other guys better

  36. Eddiek957

Votto has been out a long time Has anyone heard what he is up to? Votto or Brandon Belt would be nice

    • Melvin

What I’ve heard is he’s about ready to start playing again after that stupid dugout injury with the bat laying around.

    • LarkinPhillips

Reading earlier that he is starting to take live ABs in the complex league for TOR.

  37. Old-school

Yamamoto was the read deal. Good to see the REds get 4 on him..Thats back to back games with a 6 run inning and a 4 run inning against quality pitching. Hope India is finding a groove. Steer looks better too.

Listened to thrall and Cowboy for an inning and they are good. Thrall asked Cowboy point blank with Martínez at 3-2 and Teoscar at first base after flipping an off speed pitch for a hit what do you throw here? Cowboy said high fastball and Martinez got the K on a high fastball

Antone in the booth was great again. That guy is solid.

  38. Jason Franklin

Off-topic: This is interesting and shows that cutting back on strikeouts can happen.

In 2019, some Acuna Jr. guy k’d 188 times that year. Still, a great year. By 2023, he had lowered his k’s by 104 (to only 84) for about the same amount of at-bats. That’s impressive. What was his trick? Who is his instructor? The Reds need someone like that.

    • Oldtimer

He got older and more experienced. Pete Rose batted .273 BA and .269 BA his first two years in MLB. He batted .300 BA or better in 14 of the next 15 seasons.

  39. Jeremiah

Not sure whose bottom of the lineup is worse, the Dodgers or Reds? Amazing how bad offense is across much of MLB this year. It’s a real problem, somehow MLB needs to get offense better, not sure how. With that being said, not sure how much longer the Reds can have Espinal and Benson in the same lineup so many games together. I like both of those guys as potential bench players, but just too little offensive output there to be starting so often I think right now. I think the Reds are believers in Benson which is ok, but at some point may have to really reduce his role if he stays below .200 hitting.

  40. Redlegs1869

SF would have caught that. Rather underwhelming effort from Benson.

  41. Old-school

7 shutout innings from Suter, Martinez and Spiers. Well done!

  42. RedsGettingBetter

Spiers has done his job. He permitted some hard contacts but the defense did the outs… I think Sims-Díaz are coming to the final 2 frames…

    • Jason T.

Spiers has looked much better this time up. He had some really good outings recently in Louisville before being recalled. Nice to see his growth.

  43. Jason Franklin

I really think Hurtubise needs to just stay as the leadoff man. He can… I can’t believe I am saying this… bunt! 🙂

  44. Redlegs1869

Reds have to keep Hurtubise on the roster.

  45. Old-school

Intentional walk to Spencer Steer. Wow.

  46. GreatRedLegsFan

Next position players IN: CES, Friedl, Marte. Next position players OUT: Ford, Espinal, Martini. Next pitchers IN: Lodolo, Pagan, Wilson, Young. Next pitchers out: Kennedy, ???.

    • VaRedsFan

I doubt Espy goes. Only SS other than Elly. Good defense at multiple positions.

  47. Old-school

Fraley hitting against the lefty. I guess another game where no opportunities to hit Stephenson from David bell. Candelario an option too.

  48. VaRedsFan

He did get a knock off a lefty last night, and I suppose it keeps the best defensive guys on the field.

  49. Optimist

Only watching on gamecast – warnings? bench clearing?

    • VaRedsFan

Bell came out and discussed with the ump.
Roberts came out, and grabbed his pitcher by the head both hands, and had a stern 15 second talk with him.

  50. GreatRedLegsFan

Fairchild’s interesting stat: 2021-2023 1.1 WAR in 382 AB. This season already 0.9 WAR in 106 AB.

  51. Indy Red Man

Who saw a Reds sweep coming? So we can win the season series vs Philly and LA while losing to everyone else. Just like Martinez is Orel Hershiser vs LA and Dream Weaver vs everyone else. That’s why you play the game.

Props to my boy Martini. Always liked his swing from day 1. Maybe he needs confidence since he’s been 4A for so long?

  52. Old-school

Never seen that. Dave Roberts went out to the mound and put both hands around pitchers head and talked to him for 30 seconds

    • Jason T.

      That was… interesting?
I guess hitting back to back players warranted a reaction. Definitely have never seen that before.
Kudos to Bell for coming out of the dugout too. We’ve had way too many freak things happen this season.

  53. Daytonnati

Thinking back over the years, as keen as this rivalry was at one time, I don’t recall any bench-clearing brawls between the Reds and Dodgers? Anyone else?

  54. RedsGettingBetter

Yohan Ramirez’s lack of control is wild… Hurtubise should wait some pitches before trying a swing in my opinion….

    • Hanawi

Yeah. Absolutely insane to not make him throw three strikes after his outing the other day and then this one.

    • VaRedsFan

Thought so too, but he did rope a line drive atom ball

      • Jason T.

Saw a good pitch, made good contact. No issues with that whatsoever.

  55. Jason Franklin

Am I the only baseball fan who seriously hate the stupid little dance that Dodgers do when they reach 2b?

    • LarkinPhillips

I am on board that wagon. It’s dumb. Especially down 4-1 looking at getting swept.

I like the Reds new private home run celebration. More about team and less about “me”

      • Jason Franklin

I like the private celebration too. It’s less about showing up the other team as well. Something called “sportsmanship,” I think. 🙂

  56. Roger Garrett

Error cost the second out and now a run crosses on a double.Guess it is what it is but would have loved to see the kid close it out.

    • Tom Reeves

I don’t know that play gets ultimately scored an error by Steer.

  57. Melvin

This game isn’t over. Come on Diaz.

    • Jason T.

Bam! Didn’t love the full counts but Diaz comes through.
      Sweep! Feels awfully good.

  58. Old-school

Raise your hand if you had the Reds winning season series against the Phillies and Dodgers.

  59. Melvin

Diaz got it done. Amazing sweep of the Dodgers. 🙂

  60. Rex

the Reds own the Wild Card tie breaker over the Dodgers!

    • LDS

It’s good to own the season series with the Dodgers, but I doubt the wild card comes into play with them. Nonetheless, probably the Reds best series of the year and maybe in the last couple of years. Got to figure that the Dodger manager will be ripping some rears for being swept by one of the worst teams thus far this year.

    • Melvin

haha We’ll keep that in our back pocket.

  61. Jason Franklin

Now the team just needs to keep playing focused and cutting back on dumb baserunning errors and errors in general. Seems they are playing better since Hurtubise has been getting at-bats.

  62. Dennis Westrick

As a long time, Dodger hater from back in the day when Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda were managing the teams, ecstatic to see our Reds sweep the series and send the Dodgers back to La La Land!

  63. Roger Garrett

Diaz from 92 to 97 with the four seamer and goes 3-2 on both hitters but fans them both.Reds sweep the Dodgers and do it with great pitching the last two games.India/Martini with big two out two run hits.

    • Optimist

Ramping up with a few at 94+ and then to 97 was noticeable – hot weather? humidity? mojo renewal?

  64. RedsGettingBetter

Nice and huge sweep …. The Reds win the whole series against the Dodgers 4-3 …If somebady would have told me that two weeks ago I would have laughed out loud

  65. Mark Moore

WOW!! Did not see that coming. Sweep is extra sweet.

    Savor the victory and reload.

  66. Indy Red Man

113 mph….can’t give Steer an error on that imo. Ball wasnt directly at his chest or anything

  67. Jason Franklin

Some good stat news: In the NL, the Reds have the 4th rated starting pitchers by WAR. The top spot is going to Philly who are at 7.6 war and most the other top 5 or 4.2 or so. The only thing that is worrisome is that the Reds have the lowest groundball percentage in the league. That needs to change as we get into hotter months at GABP.

    • Jason Franklin

Also, the other good news, maybe surprisingly, is that the combined WAR of the starters and RP rate the team 3rd overall in the NL.

      • Melvin

Starting pitching is there. If we get help in other areas…………

  68. west larry

The Brewers lost. The pirates down by five in the ninth, and st louis and the cubs play each other…the reds gain ground on three of them

  69. Jason T.

Great pitching from Martinez and Spiers. Nice to see Diaz close it out.

Nice that the Brewers lost and the Pirates are on the verge of losing too.
