Last night saw the Cincinnati Reds bust out of their team-wide offensive slump, scoring nine runs in a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers to open up a 3-game series at Great American Ball Park. Tonight’s first pitch is set for 7:15pm ET and the game will be on FOX as the national game of the week.

Hunter Greene

The last time Greene took the mound he was also tasked with facing the Dodgers. He struck out eight batters and gave up two runs in 6.1 innings, but the Reds lost that game in extra-innings.

The splits for Hunter Greene this season don’t really exist to this point. There are some small differences in how lefties and righties are getting to their OPS, but righties have a .646 OPS against him this season with lefties checking in at .633.

Walker Buehler

After missing much of the last two seasons, Walker Buehler is heading to the mound tonight to make his 4th start of the season. It will be his second straight start against Cincinnati. Last week he struck out seven in six shutout innings as the Dodgers won 4-0 in Los Angeles.

With just 13.1 innings pitched since mid-June of 2022, his splits aren’t all that useful, so we don’t have those listed for him.

Time to get a streak going. This guy shut us down last time, I feel a revenge game is in order. Go Reds!!

    • VaRedsFan

      I like the plan.
With Ford back in the lineup, I don’t see why they shouldn’t.

  2. RedsGettingBetter

Candelario was scratched from this lineup… Espinal will rerplace him batting ninth…It’s not ideal against Buehler I guess…

  3. Jason T.

Time for the Reds to not just win an opening game to a series and start actually winning series.

Hey Reds, Hunter would appreciate some runs. Thank you.

  4. VaRedsFan

Beautiful splitter by Greene to strikeout Ohtani.

    • Daytonnati

Two 98s and an 87 … Ohtani dismissed.

  5. VaRedsFan

Betts picked off. They only showed 1 replay. I didn’t think they would reverse that.

  6. RedsGettingBetter

Steer again in the first inning…

  7. Roger Garrett

Double play cost us a run but we be up 1 -0.Steer again.

  8. Melvin

We’ll take a one run lead. Let’s see if we can hold it.

  9. Mark Moore

Well, Steer is in a Pig Kicking kind of mood again. Unfortunate nobody was on.

  10. Melvin

Three hits in one inning. Wow. 😉

    • JB

That’s half way to our total hits yesterday.

  11. VaRedsFan

They are in a heap of a mess this inning.

  12. Mark Moore

Trade the run for a good DP … glad we had that Steer blast to give us one to play with.

  13. VaRedsFan

Only allowing 1 there feels like a win.

  14. Dennis Westrick

Nice job by Greene to get out of that mess with only allowing one run!

  15. Mark Moore

Minor fun fact … I’ve got the game on my phone and we’re sitting here watching the Savannah Bananas play the Party Animals (from Columbus) on the TV.

    • VaRedsFan

Just try to get tickets to the Bananas. They are sold out a year in advance. Then you have to get gouged on the secondary market if you want them.

      • Mark Moore

I know. DD#1 is on the Savannah wait list (fat chance). I have a neighbor who got tickets for the Durham performance. It’s quite the show, I’ll say that.

  16. Indy Red Man

Glad HG is looking better, but they’re all set up to be put away with a splitter or change? Its like playing rock/paper/scissors without scissors? Cmon dude? You’re better then this. He’s making his starts and era is solid….just have to take it year by year, but if became vintage DeGrom then we could win a division one of these years

    • Daytonnati

Funny, just told a buddy if Greene had Cruz’ sinker, he would be All-Star caliber.

  17. Mark Moore

Somebody woke up Benson on that one.

  18. VaRedsFan

    Willy BBBBBBB goes yard….oppo style.
Amazing the success when they stick with that approach

    • LarkinPhillips

I really hope that is the beginning of his adjustment. He has so much power. He just needs to focus hitting middle oppo and he will get hot. Fun guy to root for!

    • Hanginwithem

Beautiful swing by Benson. Head on the ball all the way to the barrel and sent it right back where it came from. More of that!

  19. Hanginwithem

Beautiful swing by Benson. Head on the ball all the way to the barrel and sent it right back where it came from. More of that!

  20. Optimist

Keep Benson at the 8-9 spot – been obvious since this time last season. Better than league average stats there.

  21. VaRedsFan

    Splitter AGAIN to fan Ohtani!
    The kid is learning!

    • Harry Stoner

K-ing Ohtani twice w the splitter has to be a big confidence builder.
HG and TS must be stoked about it.

  22. RedsGettingBetter

Greene giving two Ks to Ohtani using the splitter… It is very encouraging…The bad is the high pitching count so far

  23. Mark Moore

I always love to see guys like Ohtani whiff like that. I’m admittedly not a fan for a number of reasons. I very much dislike the funny-munny financial deal MLB allowed. I also have a gut feeling that he knew all about the gambling going on (and may have had a hand in it himself).

Good on Hunter to mow him down a 2nd time.

  24. RedsGettingBetter

Elly is down again…it seems he lost the approach

    • Mark Moore

Yeah … doesn’t matter which side. He’s pressing and it shows.

  25. Harry Stoner

    Elly just got owned.

    Not a good look.

    • Mark Moore

Like ugly on an ape … more of it and it just keeps coming.

    • VaRedsFan

He has his share of bad looks, but come on….Nobody was going to hit that 79 mph curve ball that broke 2 feet, after seeing 96 mph fastball.

  26. Daytonnati

Elly reminds me of Smash Williams in Friday Night Lights when the recruiting scout showed up at the homecoming game. National TV and Elly sort of melts.

    • Mike Adams

      Two things.
He is young and when he was tearing the cover off the ball he thought he had arrived and success was guaranteed.
He will learn (and adjust) or he will go the way of “The Punisher”.

  27. Mark Moore

Bit of a cookie to Freddie … he won’t miss those very often.

  28. Dennis Westrick

Facing Betts, Ohtani and Freeman is like a modern-day Murderer’s Row!

  29. RedsGettingBetter

I’m starting to think the opener for tomorrow seems to be a not good idea. Greene is on a high pitch count today, it’s unlikely he could go beyond the fifth inning so Bell should be using 3 or 4 relievers…

    • VaRedsFan

      We got Kennedy for that.

  30. Indy Red Man

Martini is better then Ford….he’s awful. I think his helmut is down over his eyes…lol

  31. Mark Moore

Somebody tell me when the Mike Ford experiment is over, please. I know I’ve seen enough.

    • Dennis Westrick

Ford reminds me of my first car, a Ford! Found On Road Dead!

    • WCRon

Why the hell is that guy on the team. He is awful

  32. VaRedsFan

Ford with popup #215 since being recalled.
    Is Martini hurt?

  33. RedsGettingBetter

Will Greene go for the 6th to face the top of the order for 3rd time at 94 pitches?

  34. Dennis Westrick

Greene at 94 pitches thru 5! Any chance Bell has him start the 6th?

    • Harry Stoner

Bell doesn’t show much ‘feel’ for these kinds of decisions.

  35. Melvin

Benson needs to learn to take longer strides and quit spinning his wheels.

  36. Indy Red Man

Espinal is as bad as Ford. We just can’t keep throwing out 3 guys with a combined ceiling of 2 for 12 every night.

    • Mark Moore

Espinal at least has defensive value. And he’s the ONLY competent back-up shortstop on the roster.

      • Indy Red Man

Espinal is pretty good defensively, but thats not our main issue. Why not try Soto? He’s hitting .310. Maybe getting sent down would light a fire under Espinal. He’s been garbage at the plate

    • Jeremiah

I kind of like Espinal as he looks pretty good defensively. But when your offense is so bad and a guy like him is playing every day, he kind of stands out more. It’s too bad as he’d probably look pretty good on a really good team hitting 9th and hitting .200 with his defense…he’s better than Chris Taylor I’ll give him that!

  37. Mark Moore

Bit of a hard-luck triple there.

    • Mark Moore

And it ends up not mattering 😀

  38. Harry Stoner

    One huge ‘attaboy’ for Greene.

    Impressive job.

  39. Melvin

Good job by Greene to get out of that one.

  40. Mark Moore

Nice job by Greene bearing down and finishing the 6th. Glad Bell didn’t decide to yank him after Ohtani.

  41. RedsGettingBetter

Well it worked , Greene has done a really great job… He’s arguably the ace so far…

    • Melvin

Our starting pitching is good enough to win. If only our GM would help with some tough decisions.

  42. Dennis Westrick

Gutty six (6) innings by Greene! A couple of more runs would be nice before starts spinning the RP Roulette Wheel tonight!

  43. RedsGettingBetter

Hurtubise is dealing…earning his spot on the roster

  44. JB

Hurtubise and Elly. Speed gets us one let’s see if Elly can steal a few bases.

  45. Ted Alfred

Prove me wrong David Bill. Let’s keep this thing rolling

  46. JB WV

Great job Hunter and love the intensity. Fought through some tough innings without giving in.

    • Indy Red Man

They said he threw 12 splitters tonight. Looks like he’s maturing for sure!

  47. Mark Moore

That run may prove VERY important. Got to get 9 outs. Just get them 3 at a time.

  48. VaRedsFan

Hurtubise has put together some nice AB’s since being called up.
I’m a little skeptical of his swing. Enjoying it so far though.

  49. Harry Stoner

Not expecting a lot from the BP right now, but W or L, Greene made for a nice early Summer evening of baseball.

  50. Jason T.

What an impressive start by Hunter. Battled adversity and continues to grow as a pitcher. Him and Abbott are fun to watch.

I like the moxie shown by Hurtibise. He’s fun to watch.

    • Indy Red Man

Maybe guys are fitting into the lineup? Hurt/Stuey platoon leadoff with India/Benson at the bottom of the order.

      • Jason T.

I absolutely feel like they are!
And definitely yes. India/Benson seem way more comfortable and take better swings at the bottom of the order.

  51. Indy Red Man

As usual. Make the lefty come to the plate before you go or don’t go at all. This is a launching pad and a double scores him too

  52. Roger Garrett

Nope and well thats just what this team does.Tyler right there against a lefty well we will never know now.

  53. Melvin

We don’t have the highest IQ in base running.

  54. Mark Moore

    That’ll do, Cruz. That’ll do.

  55. Harry Stoner

When Cruz’s splitter is on, he’s unhittable.

I wonder if he and HG have been talking?

    • Roger Garrett

Cruz hits 95 on his 4 seamer and 88 on his cutter/slider then his split/change/fork ball at 81/82 and its just set down.Throwing strikes is the key for him.His stuff is as you said Harry is unhittable.

  56. Dennis Westrick

Yes! The 2-out walk by Cruz made me nervous!

    • Jason T.

Very nervous. Thankfully he’s been better his past couple of appearances. Still though…

  57. RedsGettingBetter

Cruz should’ve been very afraid of Heyward… Even he did not offer a single splitter in the at bat…

  58. VaRedsFan

Cruz has regained some form after the rough 4 outings.
    Long season…. ups and downs.

  59. Mark Moore

OK, given I was NOT on the bring Joey back at all costs … him in the Mike Ford role pretty much HAS to be better than what we’re seeing.

    • VaRedsFan

Once they lost 4-5 guys, then yes Joey would have had a role, but having to wait for 4-5 guys to go down before he got a shot was probably not in his best interest.

      • JB

Plus I don’t think Joey has even played yet. He was finally taking live batting practice last week

    • JB

I don’t think the front office ever expected it would get so bad that Mike Ford would be needed.

    • Melvin

All we had to do was give him a minor league contract. Virtually no risk.

      • JB

See my comment above. Either way Ford still would be playing. Votto might be back sometime in June

      • Melvin

Isn’t that what Toronto gave him?

      • VaRedsFan

JB – Votto rolled his ankle in the Toronto dugout.
Different situation and that injury doesn’t occur?

      • JB

VaRedsFan- come on. If you are going that route, then he might blow his shoulder out again on his first swing in Cincinnati. Can’t predict what happens on “ifs”

      • VaRedsFan

All we can go on is what DID actually happen.
And he DID step on a bat in the toronto dugout.
Which is why he is just now starting up.
Do you honestly think that happens anywhere else?

    • Mark Moore

All … fair points. And I completely agree that nobody could have predicted the personnel situation. Joey would not have likely been a savior. But Ford is just plain brutal.

  60. Roger Garrett

Come on Stuie we need one more run

  61. Optimist

I like Stu as the defensive replacement. Let’s see about the AB.

  62. Mark Moore

A little insurance would have helped … need 6 more outs, boyz.

  63. VaRedsFan

Appreciate the attempt by India…solid line drive right at the CF’er.
    Keep the approach middle-oppo.

  64. Indy Red Man

How about DeJong from the White Sox? He’s got 7 Hrs and we all know he can launch them in Gabp. Big big upgrade over Espinal offensively

    • Melvin

There are players out there whether he’s the one or not.

  65. Optimist

When Moll is on, innings just disappear.

  66. Mark Moore

Oh boy!!! That’ll DEFINITELY do, Moll. Nice job.

Need another run or two before we buckle up for the 9th.

  67. Harry Stoner

Ohtani has to be pixxed. 😉

  68. Mark Moore

Nicely executed Sac Bunt … let’s push him across now.

  69. Roger Garrett

Did we just bunt a runner to second?

  70. Dennis Westrick

OMG! A sacrifice bunt by a Reds batter! Now, let’s get him home!

    • Melvin

May not ever happen again. Better take advantage. 😉

  71. Harry Stoner

I know I’ve been sour on EDLC of late, but that certainly would have been a K last year, chasing those off speed pitches.

    Some discipline emerging.

  72. Indy Red Man

Good ump tonight. Guys not 65 years old. I’m 57 and its common sense that you can’t do (or see) what you used to.

  73. Mark Moore

Fraley got completely HOSED on that strike call.

    • Harry Stoner

He’s got to foul that pitch off.

Can’t stand around with two strikes in that situation.

      • Mark Moore

Yeah, I know. Fundamentals … you have to protect the plate in that situation and he clearly didn’t.

  74. Harry Stoner

Fraley is a menace out there.

  75. Moon

And this is where you wish you had a reliable closer. Buckle up!

  76. Roger Garrett

Diaz at 95 to Freeman. One out.

  77. Mark Moore

Kind of like Diaz from a year ago, eh?

    That’ll do, Pig. That’ll do.

    • Moon

Good game all around. Reds do play to the level of their competition.

      • Mark Moore

They did tonight. 9 hits. That’s been a while since we’ve seen that.

  78. RedsGettingBetter

Ladies & Gentelmen , the Reds have won a series and nothing more nothing less to LA Dodgers…. Very good pitching today…

  79. Roger Garrett

Ball game and Diaz mows em down with 95 and that 89 mph slider.

  80. Pharmer85

Good signs from Steer with 3 hard hit balls tonight. A return to form from him would be huge.

  81. Dennis Westrick

I don’t know how to react! Two (2) wins in a row! And, against the Dodgers no less!

  82. Dennis Westrick

Seven (7) pitch inning for Diaz! Bell is a genius! For one night anyway!

  83. Tom Reeves

Unlike a lot of fans, I’m glad these Reds don’t lose faith when things are tough.

    Tough times make tough teams!

    • VaRedsFan

Only if they succeed after a the tough situation.

  84. Eddiek957

Very nice ballgame. Hunter was huge when he needed to be. Bullpen was excellent Good day to be a Reds fan. Have a great Memorial Day weekend

  85. Doc

Gee, I thought the Reds were supposed to be swept by the Padres and Dodgers. Doesn’t the home-stand currently stand at 3-2?

Kudos to Hunter Greene who was again superb, and to Cruz, Moll, and Diaz for doing what they are supposed to do…shutdown the late innings. Nice job all around, with special nod to Jacob Hurtubise since his call up.

  86. Jeremiah

Nice win Reds! Hunter Greene is frustrating to watch at times, as he lacks that pinpoint control, put away pitch at times. Really ups his pitch count. But he seems to be getting better and maturing with his pitching. I just hope he stay healthy, I think that’s the main thing for him. I think he’s a guy that even if he’s just average, he’s a 4.50 ERA type of guy, but if he keeps improving he has potential to be a 3.00 ERA type of guy. He has games where he pitches like an Ace. Would be fun to see Greene, Abbott, Ashcraft pitch 175 innings or so to see what they can do.

Hurtubise looks like a solid player, a little less powerful version of Friedl. Hurtubise and a healthy Fraley I think may make the Reds lineup fairly better on a nightly basis especially against lefties.

  87. Reinhart-Seymour

Think reds ought to try get Votto back, won’t cost anymore than what paying Ford and will hit I would think better
