Graham Ashcraft

For the second straight start, Ashcraft will be taking on the Dodgers. Last week in Los Angeles he allowed three runs in five innings as the Reds lost 4-0.

This season it’s been left-handed hitters doing the damage against Ashcraft. They are hitting for a high average and plenty of power. Right-handed hitters are not hitting for average and they aren’t hitting for any power at all, either. Not shown below in his splits is that in his three starts in Cincinnati this season he’s got an ERA of 7.47.

James Paxton

His last start came in Los Angeles against the Reds. He allowed three runs in six innings and didn’t walk anyone for the second straight start. The Reds did hit two home runs that day, but it wasn’t enough in a 7-3 loss.

Left-handed hitters are still looking for their first extra-base hit of the season against him. Of course, they also haven’t been given many chances – just 34 plate appearances against him this year. Right-handed hitters have not hit for much average or for much power, but they have walked more than they’ve struck out against Paxton.

Reds 1st rounder to miss all of 2024

Cincinnati had two 1st round picks last year. While Rhett Lowder is now pitching in Double-A, the 38th overall pick in the draft, Ty Floyd, is going to miss all of 2024. I wrote more about the right-handed pitchers injuries this year as a part of this afternoon’s minor league notebook over at RedsMinorLeagues.com if that’s something you wanted to check out.

Bullpen game Sunday. Coming to the end of 22 games in 23 days. End of a series verse the dodgers. Bold strategy.

    Let’s go.reds.

    • Andrew Brewer

The Reds started the last series against the Dodgers with a bull pen game and won it 7-2, almost a shut out. And they should have won the 4th and final game of that series too.
Betts, Ohtani, and Freeman are the big three that lead off the Dodgers. That’s where we need a lefty on the mound. (Suter did that in game 1 of the last series.) We should do it again. Then bring in Ashcraft.

      • LarkinPhillips

Since they game our bullpen has blown a couple leads. And we have had to make a couple moves to call guys up to eat innings. Bullpen games may be won that day, but they have consequences for the next couple weeks typically.

  2. Dennis Westrick

Not at all optimistic about the Reds chances against the Dodgers lefty starter (Paxton) tonight given their lack of hitting lately!

Will check in periodically to see how the Reds are doing and what will be their recipe for a loss, be it defensive lapses, TOOTBLANs, lack of clutch hitting, the inevitable 10+ strikeouts or a BP implosion! One thing’s for certain, this Reds team has found some creative ways to lose during the last 29 games going 8-21.

Hope I’m wrong and the Reds can start to turn this season around sooner than later! Despite being 10 games under 500, there is plenty of season left!

    • VaRedsFan

I’m sure you’ll be back to let us know if a leadoff walk scores for the Dodgers. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Mark A Verticchio

I just realized the Oakland A’s have a better winning% than the Reds. I can’t say I saw that coming.

  4. VaRedsFan

I’m wondering how they’ll get along tonight without Ford in the 3/4 slot. How will they replace his production?

  5. Votto4life

I am at the Bats double header against Toledo. Bats win game with an Austin Wins 3 Run walk off bomb.

  6. JB

Holy cow somebody bunted. It’s a miracle.

  7. Andrew Brewer

    that was inspired textbook ball…

  8. Roger Garrett

Two walks and a bomb. Now thats good baseball especially taking the walks.

  9. VaRedsFan

Nice stroke by Steer. He seems to be climbing out of his funk.
    Much welcomed.

  10. Old-school

Patience, plate discipline and ambush a 3-1 pitch in your wheelhouse to get a 3-0 lead over the Dodgers.

I may go to bed. All downhill from here!

  11. Roger Garrett

Center cut and he didn’t miss it

  12. Old-school

I will pinch hit for Dennis.

    LEAD OFF WALK!!!!

    • Melvin

Well it scored…..along with the misplayed ball runner.

  13. Melvin

Another hit that should have been an out?

  14. JB

A hesitation by Ashcraft for some stupid reason and then a wild pitch and a double to clear the bases. You got to be kidding me.

    • Melvin

He took a bad angle too. Throw was behind him?

  15. WCRon

Ashcroft needs to move faster. There goes the lead.

  16. Old-school

Reds are 20-30 and in last place for a reason.
Just a terrible inning after you grab a 3-0 lead by all involved.

  17. RED THUNDER

Maybe he is tipping his pitches again

  18. Melvin

Man Betts is good. I’d love to have him.

    • JB

Are you kidding me? After the Reds get a hold of him he will be a .220 hitter.

    • Melvin

Has more extra base hits than strikeouts.

  19. Brian

Thereโ€™s a hot blonde in the Reds dugout? Could that be part of the hitting issues?
    They are mostly young guys.

  20. Eddiek957

I believe Sadat is a jinx Every time he talks about how badly an opposing hitter batting the dude gets a hit

  21. JB

And the lead is gone in a flash. It was fun while it lasted.

  22. Melvin

Well we had the lead for a FEW minutes at least.

  23. WCRon

He was slow to the bag last time I saw him. Guy needs to lose some weight and move. We will be trailing before this inning is over

  24. Mark A Verticchio

Someday the rotation = Lodolo, Greene, Abbott, Williamson, Petty and Lowder = 5 of those 6. Ashcraft belongs in the bull pen as a set up guy. He is not starter material.

  25. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds for one reason or another should be trailing… After They took the lead 3-0 immediately dropped it ….

  26. Mark A Verticchio

Score 3 give up 4 the story of the 2024 Reds. It all started with a walk and then not covering first base by the pitcher.

  27. Andrew Brewer

I’m ready for an 11-10 thriller, but how long should Ashcraft be out there ?

  28. VaRedsFan

    Oppo-Indy is a competent hitter.

  29. JB

Another bunt!!!! Wth is going on out there?

  30. Old-school

Maybe GABP waking up. Reds beat the Dodgers twice I think last year after giving up big deficits early. Buckle up.
    I like Hurtubise.

    • Melvin

He deserves another start just for that. ๐Ÿ™‚

  31. RedsGettingBetter

Terrible at bat by Fairchild… that’s why this team are losing frequently

  32. RED THUNDER

This team can’t buy a productive out

    • Melvin

A productive out is seemingly not stressed too much. Just swing away and have fun….enjoy yourself as long long as you’re giving a little league effort. Actually Little Leaguers are taught about productive outs.

      • LarkinPhillips

I watch a lot of the Reds minor league games. It isn’t taught there either.

      • RED THUNDER

Yes, Little Leagues are taught to hit a grounder to the right side of the infield. Just get it passed the pitcher

      • RED THUNDER

@LarkinPhillips, you are correct about that too!

  33. Mark A Verticchio

1st and 3rd one out top of the order up, don’t score = 2024 Reds.

  34. Andrew Brewer

1st and third with one out and we come away empty…

  35. Roger Garrett

That inning showcases this team for what it is and thats a team that just doesn’t do enough of the right things to win and its night after night after night even when they manage to win a game.

  36. Beaufort Red

EDLC taking BP with Benson? Does he understand the concept of just make co tact? Heโ€™s starting to look like last years 2nd half EDLC. Starting to really like Hurtubise.

  37. Harry Stoner

As soon as Arroyo is healed and ready: Trade EDLC.

  38. Melvin

Did India not tell EDLC to let that throw go through? Should have been an out.

  39. Old-school

Fairchild awful AB. GET THE RUN IN FROM 3RD

Blue jays had a team meeting in last place per Jon Morosi and players calling out others saying not playing team baseball, more concerned about trying to get stats. Thats this team problem. Reds under David Bell arent trying to make the winning play. They are trying to beat out their fellow AAAA player chasing the long ball.

    • Melvin

I don’t know what’s happening behind the scenes. I DO KNOW they’re not getting the job done.

    • Roger Garrett

Steer strikes out looking in to a double play?WOW

  40. GreatRedLegsFan

Itโ€™s so frustating the inaction of front office and just let things stand. Thereโ€™s no way the team will improve offensively by relying only upon EDLC, Stephenson and now JC that seems to be waking up. Marte and Friedl are still about a month away to return and McClain still too far. Thereโ€™s some pitching depth that could be used to get, i.e., some OF help.

    • Harry Stoner

      Who’s relying on EDLC? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  41. Old-school

Another out on the bases from Candelario. This team gives away outs. You only get 27. David Bell says hand them 10

  42. Melvin

To say that they’res not any help in AAA is just not true. Levi Jordan for one is hitting really well. What have we got to lose?

    • Melvin

.346/.431/.505 Krall does not want to make ANY hard decisions seemingly. Some might say it’s not a good time to panic. When is there a better time than when you’re in last place and last in BA and hits? lol

      • Melvin

Not to mention the guy who’s leading AAA in saves down there too.

  43. Frogem

Why in heavens name is Candelario attempting steals. He’s 0-3 so far. Needs to shut it down and quit giving the opposing team free ours!

  44. Roger Garrett

Yeah and Steer watched strike 3.Is this team even close to being on the same page?Good grief?

  45. Pete

You can try to fix 26 problems or you can start with fixing just one and evaluate again. This is a farce and not fun. Not for the fans and I doubt the players are enjoying it either. Pitiful.

    • Melvin

      Rather painful ain’t it. ๐Ÿ˜€

  46. Andrew Brewer

strikem out throw ’em outs are great when your team pulls it off.
Candelario a threat to steal ? No, we pinch run for him.

  47. Harry Stoner

So Candelario decides he’a a base stealing threat?

With your top rbi / 2b hitter up?

Bell, of course, has Candelario’s back and JC loves playing for him.

    • Melvin

I guess they forgot the hit part of the hit/run?…if that was actually on. Candy doesn’t have a SB all year yet.

  48. Dennis Westrick

A WALK and a wild pitch by GA contributed to the 4-run 2nd inning for the Dodgers! The only mystery now is the final score in another ugly loss!

    • VaRedsFan

As predicted at the top of the thread.

    • wallyum

Ashcraft never met a deficit that he didn’t feel the need to build on. Steer has been my biggest disappointment on the season, but Ashcraft has had his moments as well.

  49. Roger Garrett

Somebody has to step up and say something. This must be every man for himself. If Candy is running and thats not even a good move anyway then why is Steer looking at strike 3?You just can’t make this kind of stuff up cause its just so silly to start with.OK I will take off and you just take strike 3.

    • Harry Stoner

      It’s not going to happen.

If it were, such a thing would have happened weeks ago.

      This is BullBellBall:

“Be yourself.” “Bell’s got my back!” “We Love Playing for Bell!”

  50. Melvin

Well I’m at least glad I got Betts on my fantasy baseball team. ๐Ÿ™‚ smh

  51. Andrew Brewer

Ashcraft went right at Ohtani, and that with Betts on 2nd… Wow !
And we get the groundout to short…

  52. Roger Garrett

Ash may end up in the pen someday but regardless he is a bull dog win or lose he ain’t backing down.

  53. Roger Garrett

India going the other way again.

    • Melvin

It’s worked twice. Imagine that. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Harry Stoner

I’ve still got some hope for India.
      Talented guy. Loves the game.
      Nagging injuries.
      Maybe trying to hard.
Getting jerked around in the lineup from Bell’s ‘managing’.

      • Melvin

Maybe. I don’t like his philosophy about Bell in those Bally commercials though. lol

  54. Andrew Brewer

that knuckle curve was too much for Hurtubise…

  55. VaRedsFan

    Oppo-Indy is a competent hitter….x2

  56. Andrew Brewer

And we get out of it with just one home run.
The Reds need to score this inning, or we let it get away…

    • Don

There is constant pressure on Reds pitching. If they don’t hold a team to three or four runs, the odds of the offense putting enough runs on the board to win it are slim.

  57. GreatRedLegsFan

A loss today will take projected record to 63-99.

  58. Andrew Brewer

And Fairchild hits one off the fowl pole… !!

  59. Melvin

Fairchild. Whatya know about that? ๐Ÿ™‚

  60. Don

Larkin just referred to the losing streak as “a little bit of a slump”. Talk about lipstick on a pig.

  61. Roger Garrett

Who does he work for?Must be drinking the same kool aid as the team.

    • Melvin

If he thinks that way I DEFINITELY DON’T want him managing the Reds.

  62. Roger Garrett

Homer or nothing it appears but we have 4 runs.

  63. Andrew Brewer

Two outs with a man on… two outs mean nothing to the Reds.

  64. Daytonnati

TySteve with a Clint Eastwood stare there.

  65. Melvin

Maybe a good old fashioned bench clearing brawl would get us fired up? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Stephenson didn’t like getting hit.

    • Roger Garrett

Well Bell beat up a chair the other night and Sheldon said the team then rallied behind him but your saying we need more then that and I agree

      • Melvin

If you’re going to throw something throw it out on the field. Get your money’s worth. ๐Ÿ™‚

  66. Old-school

Reds calling Dodgers on Ramirez. Could be a fit in this bullpen.

  67. Melvin

Another HBP. Fight! Fight!…no way he was trying to hit him though.

  68. Andrew Brewer

two walks and two hit batters, the game is tied, and new pitcher coming in.

  69. Roger Garrett

Lets fight anyway.Beating up chairs is kind of wimpy to me.

  70. Old-school

13 pitches 1 strike from Ramirez and 2 HBP

  71. Melvin

No way we should swing at any pitches at the moment.

    • Melvin

We waited till they grooved one for us. ๐Ÿ™‚

  72. Old-school

    happy for Jonโ€ฆ.He deserved that

  73. Melvin

Hahaha!!! Grand Salami for India. ๐Ÿ™‚

  74. RedsGettingBetter

India recalled when he was a good hitter!!!

    • Melvin

India – Yeah. I remember that now. ๐Ÿ™‚

  75. Andrew Brewer

Wow! A grand slam for India’s third hit of the night …

  76. Melvin

When is the last time we scored nine runs?

  77. Jason Franklin

Do not let up on the Dodgers. Must score more runs. They are too good to play soft.

  78. DaveCT

Blood sacrifice. Will the primal instincts awaken?

    I say yes.

  79. Roger Garrett

Two hits the other way and a pull side homer. Now all thats left is to lose a little control and plunk a Dodger in the ribs then we can fight.Bell and Roberts go for the title.Everybody else on both teams just laugh and enjoy maybe a hot dog or two.

    • Harry Stoner

Reds down three starting players from HBP.

I’m willing to credit Bell a little short fuse on the topic.

  80. VaRedsFan

Not sure I’d let Ashcraft go back out there after the long half inning…we’ll see.

  81. Roger Garrett

The wheels are now turning and Bell begins to mix and match for the rest of this game.Win or lose Jon India got it done in good style.

  82. Harry Stoner

    Betts is a mensch.
Easy to hate on LA: Lasorda, Garvey, Cey, et al spoiled it for a generation.
Hard to root against the Mookster though.

    • Daytonnati

Still remember him negotiating for Friedl’s first home run ball and trading for it with an autographed bat. Just a class act.

      • Melvin

Yeah. Me too. He’s a good guy/player and hard to root against.

      • Votto4life

Very proud the fan who caught it..he is from my home town of Portsmouth, Ohio. Betts said the young man didnโ€™t hesitate or ask for anything for the ball. Just tossed it to Betts when he asked for it. Class act by Betts and the fan.

  83. Don

This game has the feel of one of last season’s games…offense, clutch hitting, fans are into it, etc.

  84. Roger Garrett

Clean inning for Ash and Moll.Do you think Moll comes back out?

    • VaRedsFan

Bell doesn’t let Moll pitch much.
      It will be Buck.

      • Dennis Westrick

Two (2) points! 1) Bell will not (in most cases), allow one of his RPs to pitch more than one inning regardless of how he performs in his inning of work or how many pitches he’s thrown! And 2) Bell loves him some Astronaut Farmer!

  85. Old-school

Summer GASP to the Reds rescue. How they caught fire last year. they beat the dodgers and braves by scoring 8-9 runs after trailing.

  86. Hanawi

Fairchild has been quite good in May

    • Don

He’s hitting .267 in his last 30 ABs with a couple of HRs to boot…not bad at all.

  87. Harry Stoner

It’s two months into the season.

Candelario has been paid about $5M for his efforts so far.

It’s past time for him to start earning his pay.

I’d put it up on the scoreboard: Candelario Earnings To Date / Production To Date.

  88. Don

Fairchild having one heck of a night, a HR and two robberies in CF.

  89. Old-school

Fairchild needs to play CF every day with Friedl out. Just coach him on hitting situationally better. Hes been very good on defense.

    • VaRedsFan

The defense plays everyday, but can’t hit righties though.

      • Melvin

Well it would be hard to hit worse than Benson has and Fairchild plays better defense.

  90. Dennis Westrick

That a boy, Farmer! Issue a walk with a 4-run lead!

  91. RedAlert

Hold your breath with Buck Farmer – he is NOT GOOD !

  92. JB

Somehow Farmer hung on for dear life and made it through the inning.

  93. RedsGettingBetter

    Can exhale…..Farmer … Holy sh..t

  94. Votto4life

Santillan hitting 98 tonight on the radar. Why isnโ€™t he the Redโ€™s closer?

    • Mark A Verticchio

That is a million dollar question. What is wrong with the front office bringing up Kennedy instead of Santillan. Kennedy is a journeyman at best.

    • Melvin

I know when he comes up he has to stay but I think it’s about time. lol

  95. Melvin

This has been the India/Fairchild night so far.

  96. Dennis Westrick

Hate to always focus on the negatives, but nine (9) strikeouts by the good guys thru 7 innings!

    • Melvin

Yeah. A few of those hard swings went for homers tonight but it doesn’t happen often. Need to make contact.

  97. Melvin

There’s your walk Dennis with Ohtani coming up.

  98. RedsGettingBetter

Sims complicating the things with a walk and HBP…incredible

  99. Don

Lucas Sims is like a box of chocolates.

  100. Melvin

Another caught ball by India. He’s everywhere. ๐Ÿ™‚

  101. Jeremiah

Is Fairchild a gold glove centerfielder? He’s made a lot of highlight reel plays this year

    • Melvin

      Plays like one sometimes. ๐Ÿ™‚

  102. Harry Stoner

I’ve been hounding EDLC, but that was a pretty good at bat.

Could have seen him chasing any number of those pitches and K-ing again.

    Well done.

    • Jeremiah

I think he’s probably just going to be pretty inconsistent at this point in his career you just hope he has the highs and doesn’t settle into all lows or mediocrity

  103. Melvin

I don’t know why EDLC is not going here with a four run lead.

  104. Reddawg2012

I’m not trying to be a hater but how is it possible that Barry Larkin was such an all time great player but adds next to nothing to the broadcast with his color commentary? I just feel like we get so much more from Welsh and Brantley.

    • Harry Stoner

      Larkin was a great player.
No reason to assume he should also be a good talker.

      • Reddawg2012

I don’t need him to be a good or smooth talker. Just occasionally provide some insight beyond what my 84 year old grandpa could come up with.

    • Melvin

He says some good things sometimes but mostly he’s kind of a dud. Why is it that it seems pitchers are better commentators than position players most of the time?

    • VaRedsFan

Antone was better on day 1 as a guest announcer.

  105. Harry Stoner

Good to see that Suter didn’t walk the first batter he faced.

    • Melvin

haha Better than walking him and letting someone else hit a HR I guess. One out. Two to go.

  106. Melvin

Well that’s not a good way to start the 9th.

  107. Melvin

Hey. We won against the Dodgers. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Harry Stoner

A gnarly win, but a win just the same.

Would have been a fun game to sit out at GASP.

Do they still serve brats, metts and Hudephol?

      • Harry Stoner

No more Hudepohl? What about Schoenling? Burger?

      • Daytonnati

Yes, yes, and I don’t think so?

They no longer “rock and roll with a Hudepohl!”

      • Harry Stoner

Rock and roll? Not necessarily my thing.

I do more fondly remember WNOP and AM jazz radio from my time in Cincinnati.

I never really liked Hudepohl beer unless there was a ballgame in front of it. Muy blandioso.

Used to ride my bike, though, past the big glass windows of the Schoenling brewery on my way to work each day.

I think the Burger brewery was over the river in Kentucky at that time, but I don’t remember for sure.

      • Jim Walker

@Harry>>> I recollect that the beer brewed across the river was Bavarian Beer. Wikipedia seems to agree with that.

Burger was brewed in Cincy proper in a brewery off Central Parkway (per Wikipedia).

Hudy took over Schoenling and eventually bought the trademarks and brand names of Burger too.

Hudepohl-Schoenling shutdown but the guy who started Christian Moerlein bought their trademarks and recipes (apparently including the original Burger stuff)

      • Harry Stoner

        @Jim. Thanks! Iโ€™m sure youโ€™re right.
This was a long time ago and my time in town was short.
I remember finding some โ€˜Little Kingsโ€™ in a small grocery down in TX once, but out of context, they werenโ€™t quite the same.
Beer and I parted company long ago, but I get nostalgic now and then watching a game.

  108. Don

First game back home and the Reds drop a nine spot on the second best team in the NL to kick off a weekend. This was a big win.

ANY win is a big win right now. ๐Ÿ™‚

I loved strat-0. Started playing in my dorm room in College and played until my early 40s.

When I was a kid I made up my own dice game and played it years. I was pretty nerdy.

Votto4life – Just shows how much of a fan you were/are.

They would have scored twice as many if Ford would have played.

    • Harry Stoner

      I don’t get Ford:
1st round draft pick. Ivy League Man. Big MiLB numbers.
Definition of a stiff in MLB.

It was a scheduled day off? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Huge win! Not a good pitching but the offense could capitalize its chances… 9 walks tonight is showing good at bats

    • VaRedsFan

I wish the walks could carry over….but it often does not.

    • VaRedsFan

Same with India hitting oppo. Carry it over.

    • Harry Stoner

      9 walks are staggering.

I’d be surprised if the LA manager was mumbling his way through some excuses for that as we’ve become accustomed to with Bell.
