The Cincinnati Reds (18-25) continue their tour of the west coast with a four-game weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers (29-16). It hasn’t gone well for the Reds, as they’ve lost four of the last 14 games. It doesn’t get any easier either, as the Dodgers come into the series with the second-best record in the National League and a sizable first place lead in the NL West.

The Reds will start an opener in Brent Suter, with Nick Martinez expected to pitch after Suter. The Dodgers will counter with Tyler Glasnow. First pitch is at 10:10 PM EDT.

Brent Suter

Brent Suter will be the opening pitcher tonight. My guess is that he’ll likely pitch two innings if everything goes well. Five of the Dodgers regular position players are left-handed hitters (It is four tonight–Dave Roberts gave lefty Max Muncy the night off). Suter is much better against lefties than right-handed batters. Righties are hitting almost 100 points better against him and also walk 11 percent of the time compared to zero walks to lefty batters.

Nick Martinez will follow Suter. He’s pitched well in relief this month, allowing only one run on three hits in 5.1 innings over three appearances. Unlike Suter, Martinez fares better against right-handed hitters. allowing 18 hits and 9 runs to righties compared to 15 runs and 22 hits, including two home runs, allowed to lefties. The more times Martinez faces batters, the more likely his opponents score off him (.440/.462/.560 the third time through the lineup), so this is what the Reds may be trying to avoid with the opener.

Tyler Glasnow

In his first season with the Dodgers, Glasnow has been really good. He’s only had one bad start so far in 2024, giving up six runs in 5.0 innings to the Washington Nationals on April 15. He doesn’t walk batters and he’s a strikeout machine. Glasnow has struck out 10 batters in three of his last four starts and ranks in the 95th percentile for K% and the 75th percentile for Whiff% across all of MLB. When batters do make contact against him, they mostly hit ground balls. Glasnow’s GB% is 46.1% compared to only 23.4% for fly balls. His splits don’t give an edge to either lefties or righties either. He’s simply getting nearly everyone out this season.

News and Notes

Do the Reds Need to Make Changes?

It’s no secret the Reds have struggled this month and they’re now on the verge of completely losing the season. Should they make changes now or stay the course?

Shohei Ohtani Bobblehead Night

The Reds get the fortune (or misfortune, depending on how you look at it) of playing at Dodger Stadium on Shohei Ohtani bobblehead night. As you might expect, the lines were long hours before the gates opened.

About 40 minutes away from what could be really, really ugly. Maybe the Reds will surprise the Dodgers tonight. It’s happened before. But I wouldn’t bet on it.

      • LDS

Thanks. I grew up hating the Dodgers, going back to the old NL West without wildcards. But, they’ve certainly had some great players down through th3 years.

      • Dennis Westrick

Thanks for sharing the video on the construction of Dodger Stadium! As an engineer, I appreciate historical construction stuff like documentaries on the Hoover (Boulder) Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc.!

      • Harry Stoner

        Ha! Your welcome, Dennis.
I’ve been architect / project manager for the last 35+ years.
        Still at it.
        Are you a structural engineer?
I’ve worked with some great ones.
High / low point was for the design / construction of a short lived MLB stadium for a future governor / POTUS.
Not the best project in hindsight.
        Not a good client, either.

    • Pharmer85

Shohei might (bet on it, that is)

  2. Dennis Westrick

To add insult to injury (not to Reds players) the game is being broadcast nationally on the MLB Network!

  3. Indy Red Man

Over 6.5, LA might get that themselves.

  4. Mark Moore

I’m pretending it’s an advanced version of the 1970’s and I had to check the late box scores what seems like 3 days after the game.

Night, all. Win this one for the beleaguered fans, boyz.

  5. Melvin

    Okay. We’re ahead. Let’s call it a game. 🙂

  6. Harry Stoner

Can we give some of that cred to EDLC?

Looked like the LA 3b was shading a bit to the bag thinking stolen base which opened up a bigger whole for TS?

    Or am I imagining that?

    • Melvin

Could be. EDLC causes problems for sure.

  7. Jason T.

Wow. Benson crushed that. Some nice hitting that first inning.

    • Harry Stoner

      Benson an enigma.

      Possibly EDLC level potential.

      Developing consistency is the issue.

They would make an amazing 1-2 at the top of the order if they could both get it together at the same time.

      • Jason T.

        A true enigma.
He definitely has potential. He just has to cut those strikeouts down. Like a lot!
Man that would be an amazing 1-2 punch if he could just put it together.

  8. Melvin

Are you kidding me? Are we going to use our entire bullpen tonight?

Bell being Bell again. Got to protect that lead in the first

      • Rick

Win or lose it’ll still affect the pitchers usage tomorrow.

    • Rick

I tuned in late Melvin. Saw the pitching used & just smdh. Silly even up by 3.
Means Martinez gets in trouble without reaching his max pitch count, ut oh.

      • Rick

The current 4 runs help for today but possibly pay the piper tomorrow.

  9. Harry Stoner

Maybe Bell forgot it’s still the first inning?

Maybe he is going all out to protect his job!

      • Harry Stoner

Since Hernandez didn’t get a hit, I guess that will have to go down as a ‘brilliant move’.

      • Melvin

haha He DOES know we have 8 more innings I assume. 🙂

      • Harry Stoner

I realize “Bell knows things” but you never know.

But I’m sure he has a ‘plan’ and is sticking with it, no matter what happens on the field.

  10. Indy Red Man

Game is showing that it will be on MLB Network. Nope, they lied

    • Randy in Chatt

everyone but Reds country………..stupid, stupid, stupid blackout rules, even down here in Chatt.

      • Rick

Yeah, we hardly ever get those games regardless of the listing..
Bally Sports South is showing it on Spectrum, Randy.

  11. RedsGettingBetter

Will Pagán stay for the 2nd inning? Nick Martinez should be asked for 3 or 4 innings

    • Rick

He usually gets in trouble.around 4 or 5 max innings. I like him for 3-4 innings. Looking good thus far starting the 6th.

  12. Melvin

Okay. Four pitchers in two innings. The math doesn’t add up. 🙂

    • Rick

Fuzzy math as George H. W. Bush once coined. Different context.

  13. RedsGettingBetter

Well, I hope this aggressive pitching strategy will work

  14. RedsGettingBetter

I think Wilson’s outing was just for get an out or he will stay in?

Just doing the matchup thing. No way this will backfire, right?

    • Melvin

That works if we’ve got 18 relief pitchers. 🙂

Do we only have Moll after Wilson that is lefty! Martinez better be able to go more then a couple batters,

  16. Melvin

EDLC with two hits already. Dad be cool. :)…plus two SB.

    • Rick

Bell knows things! I copied cat that from others here before me.
      I loved that phrase tho!

  17. Moon

Ford is not taking advantage of his opportunity with the Reds so far.

  18. RedsGettingBetter

    Stephenson is hot…
Fraley has no chance against Glasnow tonight so far

  19. Melvin

No runs and we only used ONE pitcher that inning. 🙂

  20. RedsGettingBetter

This was a very bad inning at the offense seeing just 5 pitches… Helping a lot to Glasnow in his pitch count that was high up to the 3rd

  21. Melvin

Steer’s best position is 1B. Problem is we can only have one guy player there. Call me crazy but I think CES with practice could do just as well as Steer in LF/RF if need be.

  22. Melvin

Walked EDLC thank you very much. 🙂

  23. Mike W

This Relief Pitchers’ Night’s is a fun thing and working well so far, but using more pitchers than innings does not make me feel good about the next three games — also against the 1st place powerhouse Dodgers. I LOVE Elly’s matur approach tonight against a great pitcher!

    • Melvin

“but using more pitchers than innings does not make me feel good about the next three games”

  24. Melvin

Let’s see if Ford can get this run in….nope. Man on 3B less than 2 outs. K

  25. Melvin

Cool. K passed ball and another run. 🙂

  26. Jason T.

And Steer strikeouts and gets a run in. Take them however we can get them.

  27. Moon

Ford is not taking advantage of his opportunity with the Reds so far…

    • Moon

He did. Walked, two steals, and scores on a passed ball. No one else on the Reds helped.

  28. Jason T.

Hopefully this is Elly heating up again. 4 stolen bases already is a great thing to watch.

  29. RedsGettingBetter

Ford and Steer , 0-6 5 Ks, Ford two times K’d with runner at 3rd less than 2 outs

  30. Melvin

4 run lead after 5. Pray for rain? 😉

  31. Reddawg2012

I can’t believe I’m typing this, but once Nick Martinez is done, I think the pitcher I would most want to see brought in is Buck Farmer.

I don’t think it will happen but if Nick could go 2 more innings. Pitch count is 55 now. I would try Moll in the ninth against the top of LA batting order.

Seems the bottom of Dodgers lineup not that great, the top is very tough! Just stating the obvious, lol.

    • Jason T.

Crazy variance. I noticed that too.

  33. Mike W

I’m just hoping for Elly to get a triple and HR in his final two ABs, which he should get with us on the road. Wouldn’t that be a night? He’s amazing — and a joy — to watch. If the rest of our hitters could hit a mediocre .275, we could be in first place. Our starting pitchers deserve that. Go Reds!

  34. RedsGettingBetter

Martinez has been outstanding. Excellent pitch location and control. Maybe his best game in Reds unifrom so far…Bell should give him a shot to the 7th inning…

    • Jason T.

Especially since he’s past the top 3 in the order.
He deserves a chance for sure. He’s pitched lights out.

  35. Rick

I’m glad to see Elly going opposite field more thus far.
Benson needs that adjustment too he’s still in pull mode & moving his head and looses sight on that outer 1/3.

  36. Rick

Martinez is dealing. Dodger hatred from his Padre days. Adrenaline can be a friend just don’t get cocky pitch wise.

  37. RedsGettingBetter

another five-pitch inning at the offense… Not ideal…

  38. Optimist

    Gonna ride Sims/Diaz until . . . #roles

Lets get another insurance run, heck why not 2 more!

Yeah, its been a rare event lately!

      • Jason T.

        Extremely rare!
What a night for both offense and pitching. Heck, defense was on point too.
        Moll let’s shut them down!

Moll faced his 3 batters now for Farmer

  41. RedsGettingBetter

Bell using literally all the bullpen, just Cruz and Díaz haven’t been used

  42. Mike W

Bell, you’re messing with our pitcher saga in!
Instead of letting Moll pitch his own way out of a jam — with a 7 run lead — you pull him. Now if the guy on 2B comes in it goes against Moll and ends his 24 inning scoreless streak.
Once again you prove you don’t know anything about the psychology of people. Even if we give up zero, you were wrong to do this now.

  43. 50thyearRedsfan

Looks like they gave Elly a hit on that last ground ball and he finishes 4 for 4 with 4 stolen bases, it’s the Electric Elly show! Glad to see the Reds punish these wealthy Dodgers. We might need a complete game from Montas tomorrow but this was a joy to watch.

  44. Mike W

That was “ego” not “saga in”. ?

Enjoyed the game and the comments fellows. Always nice to get the W! Lets try it again tomorrow night

    • Melvin

Okey dokey. We’ll give it a shot. 🙂

  46. Optimist

You know whose name we haven’t heard in a while, and who may be useful soon? #Blandino

  47. Mike W

Yep, two runs charged against Moll that he didn’t give up. 24 consecutive game scoreless streak over for him. Thx for nothing Bell. If you would have left him in and he got out of it, great. If he gave up a run and you pulled him, he would have said “thx for giving me a chance Skip.” Now he’s resentful of Bell. Besides using up our entire bullpen tonight, but hey, we only have 3 games AT the Dodgers the next 3 days. Good night.

Yes, if Moll stay and gave up the run, so be it. This isn’t the way it should have ended, IMO.
