After a strong start from Hunter Greene and the offense scoring six runs, the Cincinnati Reds picked up a win on Tuesday night to even the series against the Arizona Diamondbacks up at one game each. This afternoon the two teams will wrap the series up with the winner taking the series victory. First pitch is scheduled for 3:40pm ET.

Jonathan India was in the original lineup at second base, but he was a late scratch. Jacob Hurtubise moved into the lineup, and several players moved to new positions but remained int he lineup. India is out with what the Reds are saying is a migraine. There likely isn’t truth to the rumor that he got the migraine from reading the comments section here at Redleg Nation.

Andrew Abbott

In his two starts in May, Abbott has allowed two runs in each of his starts that have gone five innings each while walking one and striking out 10. He’s only allowed more than two earned runs in one of his eight starts this season.

Right-handed hitters tend to see a majority of the plate appearances against Abbott as teams try to avoid sending lefties out there against him. Righties and lefties are both struggling to hit for average and to get on base. Right-handed hitters, though, are hitting for plenty of power against him when they do get some hits while lefties are showing no power.

Brandon Pfaadt

In his second and third starts of the season, Pfaadt ran into some problems. In the five starts since then he’s posted a 3.56 ERA in 30.1 innings and allowed just two home runs. The last time out he faced Baltimore and didn’t pick up a strikeout, but held the Orioles to three runs in 6.0 innings – his 4th quality start out of his last five games.

Right-handed hitters aren’t doing much of anything this season against Pfaadt. They’ve posted a .522 OPS and drawn just there walks in 100 trips to the plate against him. Lefties aren’t walking all that much against him either, but they are picking up a ton of hits and showing off some power against him, too.

News and Notes

Nick Lodolo to the injured list

About three hours before the start of today’s game the Reds placed Nick Lodolo on the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain. He was tomorrow’s scheduled starter, so the team is going to have to shuffle things around a bit. Sam Moll is being called up from Triple-A to take his place on the roster. We wrote about both moves a bit more in depth earlier this afternoon if you want to add some more reading to your list.

Brandon Williamson’s rehab goes well

Last night Brandon Williamson began his rehab assignment after a shoulder injury in spring training has kept him off the mound for the last two months. The lefty threw 3.0 innings in Dayton and allowed one hit – a double – without a run, without a walk, and he struck out four batters while throwing just 38 pitches to get through his outing.

A day off for De La Cruz

Today is the first game of the season that Elly De La Cruz isn’t starting.

Baseball is a beautiful game when played (and managed) correctly! Case-in-point, last night’s game against the DBacks! Yes, Bell made the correct decisions at the appropriate times, especially with the pitchers! Great job by HG and the 2 BP pitchers!

Would be sweet to win this afternoon’s getaway game, win the series and have a modest 2-game winning streak going into the 4-game set with the Dodgers and an end to this way-too-long 10-game west coast rod trip!

  2. Optimist

    Well, they may say it’s a migraine, but . . .

  3. Mark A Verticchio

Man, Sam Lecure did not think it was a good idea to give EDLC a day off. He is only 22 and wanted to start in 162. Oh well Bell can use him off the bench.

  4. JB

Let’s see if the Dbacks can hit the trifecta today of ugly uniforms.

  5. JB

Was hoping Stephenson would start today. 5 hits in last 9 and 9 hits in last 27.

    • Dennis Westrick

Bell is consistent and rigid when it comes to which catcher he has in the lineup for a day game following a night game! Hope it pans out!

  6. Redsgettingbetter

According to the Pfaadt’s splits lefties crush him but the Reds three lefties at the top of the order were retired 1-2-3 with 2 Ks

  7. Mark Moore

India a late scratch … let’s just hope that isn’t for some significant reason … 😮

  8. Mark Moore

Good to see Elly getting a day off. Steer at 2nd makes me a little nervous, but the Bike Helmets play worked that time.

    • Melvin

I’m sure he protested about the day off. His stated goal this year was to play in every game. Maybe he will before the day is over.

  9. Mark Moore

    3 batters, 10 pitches. That’s a good start.

    Now to back him, boyz!!

  10. Dennis Westrick

Pitcher’s best friend, the GIDP, bails Abbott out and keeps his pitch count low for one inning anyway!

  11. LDS

If Bell is going to rest EDLC, do it when a LH’er is pitching. He can’t resist demonstrating his lack of awareness. Pathetic

    • Dennis Westrick

First, you must HAVE awareness in order to have a lack of awareness! Just have to wonder what’s in the Book of Bell.

    • DW

On one hand I agree, but on the other I would like to see him get as many right handed at bats as possible.

    • TJ

Unless he has the day off scheduled weeks in advance. Larussa did that all the time. Guy could be 8-8 with three homers in the prior couple of games. Larussa would state that the day off was planned in advance and the player knew it. Managers do it all the time.

      • Melvin

Not all managers do it and players hate being taken out when they’re hitting well. The Braves manager doesn’t like giving days off unless he has to.

    • Hanginwithem

      Last night’s lineup produced 11 hits, so…

  12. Dennis Westrick

See where the Pie-Rats lost to the Bernies earlier this afternoon! A Reds win moves them back into 3rd in the NL Central for now!

  13. DW

“There likely isn’t truth to the rumor that he got the migraine from reading the comments section here at Redleg Nation.”

    Good one Doug haha!

  14. Mark Moore

WLW audio overlay doesn’t appear to be available. Maybe it’s my browser session

Terrible call on that K for Candy. 6 inches below the zone.

  15. JB

Solo shots and Abbott. I guess it’s better than Homers with men on.

    • Pharmer85

Reminds me of Tom Browning. Not a bad thing at all

  16. Dennis Westrick

Watching the Reds offense against a SP with an ERA of 4+ is like watching a pillow fight!

  17. Dennis Westrick

Sitting at my desk at work and just wondering. Wondering how many HRs have been given up by Reds pitchers this season with 2-strike counts! At least the HR given up by Abbott wasn’t preceeded by a walk, HBP or a hit!

  18. Mark A Verticchio

This line up may not score a run. Just think about how many guys from March aren’t in the line up. I count 5 or 6 and now Lodolo out, 2024 just wasn’t meant to be.

  19. Old-school

Benson now leads all of mLB in K’s and K percentage. OBP is well below .300, yet hes hitting top of the order.

    • Melvin

One could argue that Benson is worse than Aquino and Barrero on offense and not as good on defense to put it in perspective.

  20. Redsgettingbetter

    Benson’s K% is overwhelming

    • Rick

They have him figured out. Dazed & confused.

  21. Dennis Westrick

Three (3) innings and counting without a hit against the overwhelming NL Cy Young favorite!

  22. Old-school

Fraley just misses a bomb and Ford 107 rocket at marte.

    • Dennis Westrick

In addition to the epidemic of injuries, this is the unluckiest team right now!

  23. JB

Looks like a high strikeout day for Reds hitters. 7 and counting. Abbott needs to keep it close.

  24. Roger Garrett

Its a get away day game after a night game and the lineup is exactly minus India just as Bell scripted it.Think we have a chance?Offense was shut down once the lineup was announced regardless of who the pitcher is.

    • JB

Down and away gets him still. Amazing anybody throws one over the plate to him.

      • Rick

Yeah, I agree JB. We do not miss that one bit.

  25. Dennis Westrick

That’s the Eugenio Suarez we don’t miss! A strikeout with 2 men on base and less than 2 outs!

  26. Dennis Westrick

Headed into the top of the 5th inning still without one measely hit! Plus, the Arizona SP is under 50 pitches!

My grandmother could shut thes guys out and she’s dead!

  27. Old-school

Espinal with a nice HR and playing solid defense for a while.

    • Dennis Westrick

Yep! My dead grandmother comment shamed him into hitting a HR!

      • Old-school

Dbacks got their Espinal scouting report from RLn comments section!

  28. Mark Moore

Meetings done … time to focus more on the game. Just in time to see today’s SS shoot one over the wall.

  29. JB

Espinal!!! Can’t ask for more than that on a day off for Elly.

  30. Old-school

Hurtubise with a nice rope to right but right at ‘em.

  31. JB

Espinal with a good play and Ford with the pick.

  32. VaRedsFan

A 1st baseman that actually scooped a ball!
    Nice one Ford!
Elly would have about 4 less errors with that type of result.

    • JB

Ford is playing some good first base. I’m very pleased with his glove and as big as he is , he isn’t a plodder. He’s not fast but he’s not Voglebach.

  33. JB

Benson might have hit a homer yesterday, but he is still lost. 3 more k’s today. Seems like 1000 for the season.

Maybe Benson needed the day off! Probably get another chance to do something great in the 8th or 9th.

  35. VaRedsFan

Arizona manager Lovullo tapped David Bell to be as asst. coach for the All Star Game. He was close with David’s brother Mike Bell before he succumbed to cancer.

    Nice gesture.

  36. Chad A Donnell

One guy that has gotten off a bit easy on this board is Maile. It would be nice to have a backup catcher who could be used as a late inning PH. This guy is an automatic out this year. Defense can only take you so far.

    • Rick

I’ve been bullish on him and I’m a Ky./UK guy. Need an upgrade there. Atleast hit your weight for a backup C.

  37. Melvin

Abbott continues to pitch like an “Ace”.

  38. RedsGettingBetter

Abbott has a good job done again. I think Bell let him start the 7th inning he’s at 83 pitches so knowing how the starters are managed Abbott should be looking one more frame…

  39. Old-school

Candelario line drive double in the gap

  40. RedsGettingBetter

It’s incredible how dominant has been Pfaadt today… He had no a great ERA before this game…

He is from Louisville and played at Bellarmine.

  41. VaRedsFan

2 Reds starters in a row going 7 innings.
    Love it.

  42. Mark Moore

Another great line on Abbott today. Really can’t ask for much more than 7 solid innings and a lot of ground balls.

  43. Mark Moore

I’d guess that Elly coming in cold wouldn’t give us his best AB. At least he didn’t K on that one. Came close, but didn’t.

      • Mark Moore

Bled that one through a gap. Nicely done.

        Doesn’t end up mattering.

  44. Mark A Verticchio

I would have liked to have saved Elly for a place where he could have used his speed.

  45. Mark Moore

Audio won’t let me flip over to WLW, but (surprisingly to me), Sadak seems calmer today. Anybody else think that?

  46. Melvin

Okay. Good job Cruz. Let’s not fall apart with two outs now.

  47. Old-school

Cruz nasty splitter that takes All star Marte to a knee flailing

  48. Mark Moore

    That’s a bit of a back-breaker.

  49. Reddawg2012

The bullpen is almost as bad as the lineup. Not a single guy you can depend on.

  50. Old-school

    Bad luck

Weak swing jammed misguided blooper to rf line

  51. RedsGettingBetter

Incredible Cruz after 2 outs bases empty fell apart again …what is happening with him?

  52. Mark A Verticchio

Cruz fails for the 3rd straight time, he isn’t doing any better than Diaz, Moll should move ahead of him.

  53. JB

Personally I don’t think Cruz uses the splitter enough. One of the nastiest pitches in MLB and he should be throwing it constantly.

  54. VaRedsFan

Not Fraley’s fault at all, but I’d like to see him in a head first dive for that ball.
The guy scores from 2nd either way, make or miss.

Lord knows we’ve seen enough of those type of plays against us

  55. RedAlert

Train wreck in all aspects , from the top down to the dugout !

  56. RedsGettingBetter

They can’t hit so they can’t win…another irritating loss ….

  57. RedBB

    Offense Sucks

BP sucks….this team has zero reliable back end relievers.

8 pitch inning for Sewald only 4 strikes. Knew it was going to be hard after it turned into a Bullpen game.

  59. Erik the Red

3 hits against a guy with career ERA over 5 that is not good. We may need to rebuild again if a couple of these young hitters do not become dudes.

    • VaRedsFan

Pfaat had 5 straight quality starts before today.
      He is actually good.

  60. Mark A Verticchio

12 of 14 games lost, 2 and 12. They have gone from in contention at 16 and 13 to most likely last place at 18 and 25. I would like to say that is the worst news but 7 of the next 10 games are against the Dodgers with three against the Padres. I could easily see 2 and 8 or even 1 and 9. For sake of argument 2 and 8 would put them at 20 and 33 = season over if it isn’t already.

    • JohnnySofa

It’s over. Three hits has become the norm, and is exactly what we should expect from lineups that continually set a new bar for awfulness.

  61. Roger Garrett

This game was lost from the get go with the get away lineup. If Elly and Tyler can come in late then they can start and get 4 at bats.Bell has no clue.He just gives away game after game after game.

  62. Mark A Verticchio

I have always said that Bell never has a sense of urgency with 4 upcoming games with the Dodgers this was a big game and Bell refuses to realize the situation.
