Graham Ashcraft

Over his last two outings Graham Ashcraft has allowed one earned run in 12.1 innings. The Reds have lost both of those games. He’ll look to repeat his work and hope for better performance from the hitters tonight.

This season it’s been left-handed hitters that have done the damage against Ashcraft. Lefties have an .868 OPS against him. Right-handed hitters have not been able to do much against him, posting a .497 OPS against him this season.

Jordan Montgomery

He’s only pitched in three big league games this season. He was good in the first two, but the last time out he allowed six runs in 3.0 innings and walked three batters against the Dodgers.

Last season righties hit better against Montgomery. Teams didn’t send many lefties out there against him, but the ones that got their chance hit for a good average, but they walked just twice all season against him and hit for no power at all.

News and Notes

Christian Encarnacion-Strand to the injured list

The Reds first baseman has been placed on the injured list with a fracture in his wrist that is apparently unrelated to him getting hit by a pitch in his wrist at the end of April that kept him out of the lineup for several days. No one seems to know what’s going on there. We wrote about this earlier today and you can get more details here.

Mike Ford signs a big league deal

After releasing Mike Ford several days ago rather than call him up to the big leagues, the Reds have now signed him to a big league deal and added him to the active roster. We covered that more in depth earlier today and you can check that out here.

The wires were crossed. They said to designate him not to make him the designated hitter.

  1. Jason Franklin

I would assume the plan is to slide Ford into a DH, keep the Candy Man at 1B, and that appears about it for now. Can’t wait until Marte gets back in June.

  2. Jason Franklin

Also, I can’t image what the starting pitchers are saying amongst themselves. They have to be so tense and uptight each time they go out because they cannot make any mistakes. Give up two runs? That’s it, it may be over.

I really hope the team just explodes for a ton of runs tonight. It would be cathartic.

    • Doc

The SP don’t have a lot of room to talk, unless memory banks have been erased from the last couple of years.

  3. CI3J

Over his last two outings Graham Ashcraft has allowed one earned run in 12.1 innings. The Reds have lost both of those games.

That says it all, don’t it?

    • Jason T.

I was thinking the same. He’s gotta know that he’s gonna have to give up 1 or 0 to even remotely have a chance.
I hope he can go 6 or 7 with 1 or less given up.
These starters have been doing their job.

  4. Randoxu1

Bell’s right handed special. Could you at least play the best players instead of matchups. This platoon stuff is getting old. I know there are not of ton of options could at least put ford and fraley in the lineup

    • Randoxu1

As I predicted when you go to an all right handed lineup there is no one off the bench to hit when they bring a left handed at the end of the game. No way Benson should be hitting in that spot in the ninth inning but we know Bell is smarter than everyone else.

    • Mark Moore

But what was the question? I thought the answer was “Awesome!!”

      • Daytonnati

No, Mark, the answer is always, “Let the ball travel.”

  5. Mark Moore

Dinner consumed, evening walk accomplished, game on my phone while the First Wife and I watch our normal early-evening line-up.

Perhaps tonight, we might do some Snake Eradication? Just hoping those storms don’t materialize. Nasty stuff flying around there in the Midwest.

  6. Ted Alfred

Insanity…one of DBell’s special batting orders that only makes sense to him. Every once in a while we’ll have a good game with these goofy lineups, but most of the time they just don’t work out very well. I’m kind of surprised Ford isn’t the DH if he’s available tonight although I’m not sure if he is?

    • Melvin

Par for the course if he’s not. We like playing short handed. 😉

  7. Mark Moore

Yeah … looks like they got him. No need to burn a challenge. Feels like familiar hard luck “punishment” after we muster a lead-off single.

  8. Mark Moore

    A lead-off “triple”??? From TySteve???

OK, maybe we can score him at this point.

    • Mark Moore

Not yet we can’t … though he did smack it. Took a decent stop from Geno to keep it from finding LF.

  9. Melvin

Stephenson with a triple. Don’t see that every day. 😉 I guess there was an error.

  10. GreatRedLegsFan

If they’re not able to get out of the funk soon, it may be too late by the time Marte and McClain return, which in any case will make the IF roster look so much better. The case for the current OF roster is more worrysome, player by player: Benson cannot hit LH and SO machine, Fraley cannot hit LH, Fairchild is a carreer 86 OPS+ hitter, Steer is a converted outfielder even though a good hitter, newcomer Capel and TJ Friedl, the only truly regular.

    • Redsfan4life

Why does everyone just assume Marte is going to hit when he returns? Have they not learned what the rest of these young hitters have did year 2? As for Mclain doubt he even plays at all.

  11. Jeff morris

Left handed pitcher for Arizona, and you know how the Reds struggle with left handed pitchers.

    • Mark Moore

Or right-handed pitchers … they seem to be a bit of trouble as well lately.

  12. Melvin

42 innings since we’ve had a lead. Could that come to an end? 🙂

    • Melvin

…and we have a lead folks! Fairchild with the RBI.

    • Mark Moore

So we do … yet it came at a cost. Not a great look, Stewie.

Candyman puts one out there. And graphic said 44 innings 😮

  13. Mark Moore

Now that Stewie miss comes back to bite us a little bit.

But, fear not … our DH tonight should strike fear in the hearts of every pitcher. 😀

    • Mark Moore

5 hits (including India’s in the 1st) produce a run … we’ve seen worse, right?

    • Melvin

I reiterate: Ford has reverse splits and has been tearing the cover off the ball. I have to ask, why is Maihle at the DH?

      • Mark Moore

Is Ford not in the house yet? You’d think they would have planned for that.

      • Melvin

One might argue that if he was “in the house” days ago like he should have been we wouldn’t have to worry about it tonight. 🙂

  14. Jeff morris

CES injury fracture seems strange, unrelated to being hit by pitch a couple weeks ago. These Reds are really injury prone. Happens every year! They sneeze wrong, or do this or that wrong, they get injured. It remains a question mark if, 1. These young Reds players can hit at a major league level, or are they truly just AAA or AAAA players in the Major Leagues. 2. Can they stay overall healthy ? Even if they are doing okay, can the players stay overall healthy for the whole year? At least a positive is the pitching staff. They have done good this year, so far…

  15. Gpod

you know your team is in trouble when your DH is a backup catcher who is batting .146…..kind of defeats the purpose of a designated “HITTER”

    • Melvin

Most starting pitchers hit better than .146 or at least as good. hahaha 😀 I’m sure Greene would like a shot.

  16. Mark Moore

Anyone else hold their breath whilst TJ did a little dive for that ball?

And so much for the lead … 🙁

    • Gpod

and now we are behind….everything eventually gets back to normal

  17. Ksdavis

Pirates call up Skenes. He had pitched really well at AAA.

  18. Mark Moore

Ashcraft not as sharp this inning plus getting squeezed a little by the Chumpire (again).

  19. Dennis Westrick

Here comes the WALKS! This D-Backs team doesn’t need any help!

  20. Mark Moore

Hey who hesitates is lost … Ashcraft with what looked like a late break and Candy double-hitched.

  21. Mark Moore

This is why we can’t have nice things … pitch count now elevated and Ashcraft is largely responsible for that with the free passes.

  22. Dennis Westrick

The walks truly get old! Is GA getting “squeezed” by the HP Chumpire?

    • Mark Moore

A little, but not consistently. He missed the zone by a wide margin that inning.

  23. Mark Moore

    Thank you, Elly.

So is it just me, or is being down a run feeling more like being down a 10-spot? The temporary euphoria at having the lead was VERY temporary.

  24. Mark Moore

Watching Elly battle is hard. Knowing he can’t get a day off (aside from the team not playing) because we don’t have another non-emergency SS option is even harder. His head must be really messed up.

  25. Melvin

Being from Indy I’m going to have to switch over the broadcast to the Pacers soon. Afterall they ARE in the playoffs and have WON their first series this year. I’ll keep track of this game though with great anticipation. 😉

    • Dennis Westrick

Hey Melvin! I lived in Indiana No Place from 1978-1984! Went to many Pacer games even though I was a Kentucky Colonel fan! My office was right downtown on Monument Circle!

      • Melvin

Too bad the Colonels folded and didn’t make it to the NBA. It was a great rivalry with the Pacers.

  26. Mark Moore

Hey, Dennis … he didn’t walk Geno!!!

  27. Dennis Westrick

If it’s not a WALK, it’s a HBP! More freebies than a health clinic!

  28. Mark Moore

Looked like it pulled Marte off the bag. But I guess not … or maybe Jobu is handling reviews and doesn’t care to check on it.

  29. Reddawg2012

Just got home and turned the Reds game on. Two pitchers later and Candy smacks an RBI double. I literally forgot what this feels like.

    • Mark Moore

Don’t replay the top of the 3rd … it was an all too familiar story with walks and elevated pitch counts.

  30. Mark Moore

Aggressive turn from Espinal and House. Throws would have to have been much better than that. And Candyman atones for some of his mistakes with that one.

  31. Mark Moore

One more run and we’ve outscored ourselves from how many games ago?

  32. Mark Moore

And then Candy adds to his own legend … and not in a good way.

    • Mark Moore

And I get he’s not the first choice for 1B, but wasn’t he hired to play both corners competently?

    • Mark Moore

I hear you … but do you have the $45M that would cost?

  33. Dennis Westrick

Our defense would make Barnum & Bailey proud! What a clown show!

  34. Mark Moore

Nice start to the Bike Helmets from Elly to get Graham out of his Jaham!!!

  35. Dennis Westrick

Three (3) WALKS by GA so far! But who’s counting!

    • Mark Moore

Plus the HBP … don’t forget that. He’s kind of his own worst enemy tonight.

  36. WCRon

Candy is worthless. Makes it painful to watch.

  37. Mark Moore

I just flipped to the TV on FS1. Anyone know who’s in that booth?

  38. Mark Moore

Your basic TOOTBLAN for Maile there.

  39. Mark Moore

My First Wife noticed all the empty seats. Good thing gate attendance and concessions don’t provide a bunch of income for the Reds, right?

  40. Mark Moore

20 swipes for Elly. Not even his best slide and he still made it.

And then there was #21 😮

  41. Mark Moore

Elly needs some new pants between innings 😛 😀 😉

  42. RedsGettingBetter

Nice chance to take the lead wasted

  43. Mark Moore

Calling for Cruz … let’s hope he can stick his fork-ball in these Snakes and get out of the Jaham.

  44. Dennis Westrick

What is Bell waiting for? A complete meltdown leading to a 3+ run deficit?

  45. Dennis Westrick

Anybody else notice that GA seems to lose focus and melts down in the 6th inning of most of his starts?

  46. Mark Moore

Nice Bike Helmets. If we hold them to just that one run, it will feel like a victory to me.

  47. RedsGettingBetter

Having Espinal 5th and Fairchild 6th is really weak.

  48. Old-school

Let’s go back to spring training. Who had Espinal playing 3b and hitting 5th. This is a nightmare.

  49. Mark Moore

Cruz back out for the 7th? Don’t get me wrong, I like it, but I don’t think we’ve seen this movie very often, so it caught me by surprised.

  50. Dennis Westrick

A 5-pitch inning for Montgomery in the bottom of the 6th! Are you kidding me? Reds’ approach to hitting is atrocious!

    • Gpod

at least a 5 pitch inning didn’t give Bell time enough to get another pitcher up and so he had to bring Cruz back in….so that was good

      • Mark Moore

That would explain it … and it worked out very well.

    • Mark Moore

We’re not going to change who they are or some load of malarkey such as that …

  51. Mark Moore

Absolutely filthy on that K to Marte.

  52. Mark Moore

HT to Marte for that accurate glove flip. Nice idea from TJ.

  53. WCRon

Though he deserves better run support a lot of this game is on Ashcraft aided by Candy. Need to hustle and cover the bag. Too many walks.
And after that misplayed ball Candy needs to be benchef

  54. Mark Moore

OUCH!!! Got him “in a bad place” … 😮

I don’t wish that on the worst of the Chumpires.

    • Daytonnati

You know it’s bad when they don’t show the replay.

  55. Gpod

next game can we have a DH that emphasizes the H in the DH

  56. Mark A Verticchio

They may have scored 2 runs in this game but the overall play has been terrible, mistakes all over the place. Looking like 7 in a row to 16 and 20. Hope I am wrong.

    • WCRon

So sad. I would just love for them to be competitive. Know they can’t match the brewers and maybe even the cubs. But this is so sad

  57. Mark Moore

Lucas Sims to the mound … everybody buckle up!!

  58. Mark Moore

Geno remembers where to hit that one … 4-2 seems insurmountable at this point. Cement mixer from Sims.

  59. Mark A Verticchio

    Sims doing what Sims does.

  60. Grover

4th Homerun in 11 innings for Sims, looking at his career stats I see a whole lot of mediocre to bad results. Santillan anyone?

  61. Gpod

There is not gonna be a long win streak like last year to get the season turned around…this team is just not capable of something like that

  62. Grover

Even Elly’s stats are starting to look mediocre

  63. Jason Franklin

How long does Bell and the hitting coach get to keep their jobs?

    • LDS

Not longer than a few more years hopefully

  64. Gpod

When you have both Cruz and Steer in a free for all…..then there is no hope

  65. Mark A Verticchio

Bell has no idea how big of a whole his team is in. Very likely insurmountable with this team and these players.

    • SteveAReno

the whole team is in a big hole

  66. DataDumpster

Well, like Barnhart and Newman embarrassing the Red’s yesterday by equaling their team total hits, today it was Suarez’s turn by getting a dinger and a STOLEN BASE. Also, to further develop the narrative that Bell is virtually clueless, his decision to throw Moll down to AAA in lieu of Thomas or Sims was further proven folly as both of them blew another chance. Lastly, I was confused but at least hopeful with the reconsideration of Ford (try anything different at this point) but I guess he wasn’t ready or being saved for the perfect matchup (that probably never comes). Still time for a comeback but I suppose they will settle for the 2 runs and 7 hits as a good talking point in Bell’s post presser.

    • Grand Salami

And they had all those hits after 5. They faded against a pitcher that was throwing the exact same stuff. Third time seeing him and they all got worse.

  67. RedsGettingBetter

After Dbacks took the lead, the Reds offense has gone 3 innings in order , 9 batters retired.

  68. Grand Salami

I was thinking Friedl might spark a small turnaround.

The lineup tonight was whacky and didn’t produce. That’s Bell.

Montgomery didn’t have much but the Reds let him make it 7 without being able to locate his secondary pitch whatsoever. The team hasn’t hit all season, it’s philosophical and that’s on the hitting coach.

Someone needs to get fired. The front office hs to demonstrate to the team and fans that this is well below expectations.

  69. Dennis Westrick

Another day, another loss! Maybe we’ll win again June!

  70. DataDumpster

Beautiful AB by Fraley. It’s all set up for Ford!

  71. Ptaylor2112

Wait, I though y’all said Mike Ford was the second coming?

  72. JB

Ginkel is Arizona’s version of Sims. Smokem if you got em.

  73. Mark Moore

Nice job by TJ to lash that one down the line. Now can we convert it?

  74. Gpod

This is a huge at-bat for Benson……to say the least

      • Mark Moore

It’s an “old school” you crossed some imaginary line despite not offering at it.

  75. Mark Moore

For reasons obvious to most of us, this one really hurt. Too many mistakes by too many players and we’re still not really hitting that well or consistently.

Forecast looking like rain tomorrow afternoon per The Weather Channel.

  76. Gpod

In retrospect ….I would have pinch-hit for Benson with a right-hand batter because Benson is a strikeout machine…..but I don’t know if anyone was available on the bench

  77. Jedi Joey

Ughhhh, this is sickening. I don’t see any relief anytime soon either.

  78. Doc

Starters at #5-8 were six for fourteen. Pretty good. Didn’t get much help, though.

  79. Dennis Westrick

You simply CANNOT strike out with a runner at 3rd and less than 2 outs!

    • Jeremiah

That was pretty predictable…Maile being such a bad hitter, it all kind of snowballs when you have so many bad hitters, then the pinch hit situations don’t work out as well either.

  80. LDS

Someone needs to explain to Lovello that he was supposed to leave Ginkel in the game and let him be banged around. Everyone knew Benson was coming. This situation illustrates perfectly the folly of the platoon system. How many games in a row do the Reds have to lose before Krall does something to change the situation?

  81. Jeremiah

Candelario 3 hits nice to see, maybe he picks it up a bit. This could be a long Spring Summer! My concern is there’s not a whole lot of help I would think to make the team better from the minors or trades.

With CES injured things couldn’t go much worse for Krall and what you’d hope for. No way he could have envisioned these offensive struggles. Even Steer had fallen off the map a bit.

I don’t see the Reds making any big trades either like San Diego with Arraez…

I think probably as a GM youre thinking this is not the year and looking to 2025, with the hope in the back of your mind they turn it around this year at some point. The low expectations of the Reds overall I think would keep them from making moves such as trades, switching managers. Overall as a GM I think you give it to about 60 games and then kind of really evaluate where you are at.

    • Melvin

“I think probably as a GM youre thinking this is not the year and looking to 2025”

Always next year. Adopting the Cubs theme for 100 years is not a good thing.

  82. Gpod

remember how fun this team was last year.?……a fading memory…..because it feels like the total opposite

  83. Mark A Verticchio

In 1993 the Reds fired Tony Perez at 20 and 24. He is much more of a Red than Bell will ever be. It is time to make a change. Bell’s crazy line up left him without a right handed bat when he really needed one, Benson is now 2 for 31 vs left handed pitching, you the man David, LOL.

    • LDS

Bell is 9th in Reds games managed and the only one in the top ten with a losing record. By year end, he’ll be 5th in games managed. And all the Reds have to show for it is wasted talent and an established culture of mediocrity, which will take a long time to eradicate.

  84. Jeremiah

I think there was a little bit of fools gold last year… they had the 12 game winning streak which was awesome. Matt McLain was incredible if I remember when he first came up and EDC incredible when he first came up. Otherwise their offense wasn’t really good for the most part I think after things settled down.

I think they still have above .500 Talent going into the next couple years but might not quite be there yet with the injuries and couple other factors.
