Hunter Greene

Coming off of back-to-back 7-inning performances, Hunter Greene will look to keep that going tonight against the Orioles. Since giving up six earned runs on April 10th, he’s made three starts and allowed just five runs total.

This season Hunter Greene has held lefties and righties to nearly the same OPS – .625 and .628. Lefties have hit both home runs that Greene’s given up this year, they are walking more often, but they are also striking out significantly more often against him. He’s been much better against right-handed hitters this season than he has in his career, where they’ve put up an .804 OPS against him. He’s been much better against lefties throughout his big league career.

Cole Irvin

The start of the season was a struggle for Irvin as he allowed nine runs in 10.0 innings to start the year. In his three starts since then he’s given up two runs and thrown 18.1 innings and walked just two batters. He hasn’t allowed a run in either of his last two outings.

He’s pitched better against lefties this season, but he hasn’t faced nearly as many of them as he has righties. Left-handed hitters are making plenty of contact against him – though so are righties – they just aren’t doing a whole lot when they do make contact. Right-handed hitters are hitting for a good average and walking at an ok clip, but they haven’t shown much power at all. Last season lefties had a higher average an on-base percentage than righties against him, but righties hit for a lot more power.

News and Notes

Friedl and Young on rehab

Last night TJ Friedl went 1-3 with a walk and a double in Triple-A. His double went off of the wall in center. Alex Young threw a hitless inning for Louisville while walking a batter and picking up two strikeouts. You can read a little more about their day, and see some video from Friedl’s double right here if that’s something you’re interested in.

Mock Drafting

The Reds have the #2 pick in the draft later this summer. Earlier today Jonathan Mayo of released his latest mock draft based on what he’s hearing from scouts. He notes it’s still too early to know for sure how things will play out, but has Cincinnati selecting Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana.

Nice to see CES and TySteve back.

Interesting choice going with Fraley instead of Benson against a lefty.

On paper, this looks like it’s going to be a low scoring game. Hopefully the Reds can play some small ball and scrape some runs across. A 4-2 win would be just fine with me.

  2. LDS

Good to see CES, Fraley, and Stephenson back in the lineup. India out and Espinal starting again. Hopefully, just rest?

      • LDS

I see that now. Benson needed a break.

      • Mauired

I don’t know if Benson needs a break. Maybe a break from leadoff. He is tied with Elly in ninth place in all of baseball in extra base hits despite his fifth benching by Bell against lefties who he is hitting better than righties. Two more extra base hits and he’s in the top 3 in all of baseball.

      • Mauired

*And 3 more extra base hits, Benson ties Mookie Betts. Benson striking out too much but also not doing as bad as people think.

      • greenmtred

All lefties aren’t the same. It’s certainly possible, since the Reds–like all other teams–have specific advanced stats about pitchers and how their pitches and command might match up with the batters, that Benson is benched against specific pitchers, not simply due to handedness.

      • Mauired

That’s an interesting (and common) take from you.

My take is if the offense is struggling, try to have as many impact hitters in the lineup as possible. I’m not sure how anyone can spin it that Espinal in the lineup over Benson is good for scoring runs.

And yes I understand they don’t play the same position, but India can play second and Benson or someone else can DH.

Bell seems to not understand that Martini and India are not the only players eligible to DH on any given night.

      • greenmtred

Fair point, Mauired. Benson is struggling though, despite the XBH, and we suspect from last year that he can hit much better than he is now. Days off against pitchers who might be particularly tough on him–if that is indeed the case–might be a way to get him going. Somewhat in the same spirit as batting him seventh last year.

Well, no help from the Stupid Cubs! Time to start a new winning streak! As Dorothy said “There’s No Place Like Home!

  4. ryan

Only a real fan could have named any of the Orioles’ starters

    • JB WV

Unless you live in Baltimore like my stupid brother-in-law

    • CI3J

If you don’t at least know who Gunnar Henderson is, you have not been paying attention at all.

He’s going to be a superstar, and probably very soon.

      • Reaganspad

Yea really, as good a catcher as there is in the game, switch hitter, 310 hitter with 18 rbis, team leader and the guy is an OSU Beaver and 2018 National Champion, first pick of the draft…

Dutch Rutchman’s grandson. Lots of places to pay attention, the guy is HOF material.

Much better prospect than Madrigal or Bazanna who may become a Red at #2 this year.

Adley caught the Reds Kevin Abel (Dayton) who was also on that 2018 team with Rutchman, Madrigal and Trevor Larnach Whois on the Twins

      • Mauired

I really hope Reds don’t pass on a middle of the order slugger for an infielder. Bazzana is a good player but so are Condon, Caglianone, and Kurtz. Reds don’t need more middle infielders. Not saying draft for need, but if a few players are all very good take the one that makes sense for once. Reds love to have surplus at certain positions like 3rd and short and holes at others.

    • VaRedsFan

Jackson Holiday (Matt’s son) is the #1 prospect.
He was called up earlier and went 2-34, and sent back down.
      Baseball is hard.

      • LarkinPhillips

Watched him play n person Tuesday in Nashville. The kid is going to be fine. I think the hype might be a little much. But he will be a good ball player, a la Dansby Swanson.

  5. LarkinPhillips

Anyone have a ETA on the start of the game?

    • Old-school

Im at the game and tarp still on

It never rained more than a sprinkle after 610 pm

    Tarp is off

  10. VaRedsFan

They took the tarp off….now they are putting it back on. 🙁

    • VaRedsFan

      Belay that.

  12. Mike W

VaRedsFan and Old-school, I’m in Northern California where it’s 71 degrees and clear (it’s 5:25 PST right now), so as soon as I read your posts about the tarp off and the game on I stopped playing catch with my dog. I REALLt appreciate your updates! Let’s turn things around, play hard and fast and sweep the Birds. Go Redlegs!

    • Callowaypost

Most of the tri-state is dryer than a nun’s confessional.

I haven’t understood how this delay has succeeded as long as it has.

Most rain I’ve experienced was heavy for less than 10 minutes, and haven’t seen rain since.

  13. Shaggy

The game is finally about to start. It barely rained here.

    • CallowayPost

Tarp is off, my inhibitions along with them.

  14. Mark Moore

Nice way to pick up a little mistake b Greene.

    PIG KICKING engaged.

Oh, and greetings from “the Great White North” … eh?

    • VaRedsFan

Enjoy your couple of hours in Canada.

  15. VaRedsFan

Jake guns down Gunnar trying for 2!

  16. VaRedsFan

    Must be very humid.
Hunter keeps trying to wipe his hand dry.

    • Mark Moore

Yeah, the one over everybody looked like it just slipped right out of his hand and sailed.

  17. Mark Moore

Jam created and then worked out. Not sure I would have burned a challenge, but I don’t get to make those calls, do I?

  18. VaRedsFan

Long AB’s….lots of fouls, but he got out of it on 27 pitches.

  19. RedsGettingBetter

Greene manages to put a zero miraculously…

  20. Dennis Westrick

Not a good 1st inning for Greene! 27 pitches! Let’s get him a lead and hope he settles in!

  21. VaRedsFan

Cole Irvin hasn’t allowed a SB in 3 years

    • VaRedsFan

      until now.
      Elly got him twice.
      Intefernce call was Bull-loney

  22. Mark Moore

OK, no strike-outs for the boyz … that’s an improvement. And Elly went with that pitch for the little bloop single.

I’m on mute, so I don’t get why he had to steal 2nd twice.

  23. RedsGettingBetter

The Reds have just weak contacts in the first inning

    • VaRedsFan

      Soft tossing lefty.
It’s part of the Reds rulebook.

  24. Dennis Westrick

Five (5) innings at best for Greene tonight!

  25. Roger Garrett

Greene isn’t throwing strikes and well it will be a short night unless he rights the ship.

  26. RedsGettingBetter

Greene walked perhaps the weaker hitter of this scaring O’s lineup and that helped to rocket his pitch count even more

  27. Reddawg2012

So frustrating to watch Hunter labor out there and then the Reds come to bat and immediately make three quick outs.

  28. Terry Diener

Six pitches to retire the Redss in the second. I hope Greene was taking notes! LOL

  29. Roger Garrett

Reds can’t hit 90 mph and there guy has 24 pitches to Hunter’s 48 after two innings.I do believe at some point we will hit but it is just awful at times to watch our team at the plate.Just go the other way with this soft stuff or at least try.

  30. Roger Garrett

Good grief 9 straight fastballs. This just will not work.

  31. Dennis Westrick

Greene is his own worst enemy with THREE (3) WALKS!

  32. Mark A Verticchio

This team simply can’t hit, way too many bad at bats and easy outs. That 3rd inning was just hard to watch easy out, easy out, easy out.

  33. Roger Garrett

Nine pitch inning after a six pitch inning.Does anybody have a plan other to swing as hard as they can.Good grief guys your better then this.Wait on it and go the other way.Its the same plan with every soft tossing lefty and we just don’t seem to get it or haven’t so far.

    • VaRedsFan

It’s a good idea to take soft tossers the other way. wished they would do it more

    • Dennis Westrick

Absolutely NO plate discipline by Reds hitters! Stop trying to pull the ball and hit it to the opposite field!

      • Tom Noonan

Exactly what I was thinking. I think the orioles ss has about 8 assists by now. Infield grounded practice. And not hard ones either!

  34. VaRedsFan

All weak contact after that leadoff single by Baltimore.

  35. Dennis Westrick

Irvin will pitch a complete game at this rate!

  36. Terry Diener

Irvin averaging just over 10 pitches per inning!

  37. Roger Garrett

Eight ground outs to the left side in 4 innings.Surely somebody else sees this and is talking to the hitters.

  38. Roger Garrett

May have been a good idea to start as many lefties against a lefty cause maybe they will at least try to go the other way.

  39. Roger Garrett

Lost in all of this is that Hunter rarely gets any run support so we shouldn’t be surprised I guess as to what is going on.

  40. Indy Red Man

This is beyond boring. MLB should be handing out roids and corked bats to whoever wants them because this product isn’t interesting.

  41. RedsGettingBetter

How many flies the O’s have hit against Greene tonight?

  42. Jason Franklin

Can someone please spend some time with the team about trying to go deeper into counts?

  43. VaRedsFan

    Padres to acquire Luis Arraez.

Hmmm…I was under the impression you couldn’t make trades before the deadline.

    • Erik the Red

That does not apply when your team is already out of it. Still very early to be dumping players.

  44. VaRedsFan

Let’s go Cruz. Lets get back to being nasty.

    • VaRedsFan

      That qualifies.
Greene scoreless streak now at 14.2 innings.

  45. Mark Moore

Let’s see if Cruz is on. Hunter was battling, but I wonder if that nearly 3-hour delay played into it at all.

  46. Dennis Westrick

Good decision by Bell to remove Greene! Too bad the pathetic Reds offense could not score a single run!

  47. Dennis Westrick

That’s the Cruz we know & love! Now, let’s score some runs for Pete’s (Rose) sake!

    • Harry Stoner

Does Rose have money on this game?

  48. Hanawi

Solid, not great, outing by Greene given he didn’t make it out of the 6th. Tough after the long weather delay so it’s encouraging to me and definitely looking up for how he is progressing.

  49. VaRedsFan

20 straight scoreless innings by Irvin

  50. Reddawg2012

The Reds cannot hit good pitching. Like at all.

  51. Dennis Westrick

One (1) lousy hit thru 6 innings? Seriously! This team is painful to follow!

  52. Reddawg2012

I was hoping to see Suter for a couple innings here. Pagan just doesn’t seem like a guy you can trust.

  53. Gpod

Honestly….how many guys on this team are like 0 for their last 18 or 1 fior their last 22 or the like ? Hard to watch

  54. Mark Moore

Cruz for a single batter … I just don’t get that decision. And Pagan wasn’t “bad” but not sharp enough to keep the O’s off the scoreboard. Almost like conceding a run.

  55. Jason Franklin

Pretty sad when the team gives up one run and it feels like due to the offense this was the margin of error.

  56. Dennis Westrick

Again, why not Cruz in the 7th? He only threw 6 pitches! This one RP per inning nonsense will cost the Reds this game as it did many times last season!

  57. VaRedsFan

Pagan is probably the worst guy in the pen….next to mop up Buck.

The best guy Cruz, got to get 1 out.

    • Dennis Westrick

No doubt the teacher’s pet, Farmer will be next!

  58. Roger Garrett

Ball game and Bell found the guy that didn’t have it.Guess we save Cruz for the next time we have a lead late in a game.Maybe next week sometime.Night all.Just frustrated because we aren’t hitting and really not even competing at the plate.

  59. Mark Moore

That’s a Clete for me. Night all.

  60. Matt McWax

Did we lose the Hot Stove league?

  61. Dennis Westrick

OK! I’m out! This loss is on Bell because of his idiotic handling of the bullpen! Again!

    • Moon

I hear you dude but if your offense can’t plate a single run that is a bigger issue than Bell and the bullpen.

  62. Gpod

Pagan just does not have a put away pitch

  63. RedsGettingBetter

This would be the third loss in a row and If your regular roster can’t hit at all I’m not sure the FO could do something to fix it in the next games… a black cloud is coming

  64. RedsGettingBetter

I thought Wilson wasn’t available so Bell didn’t bring on him in this inning against the three lefties …. Incredible mismanaging in my opinion

    • Dennis Westrick

If it wasn’t for Bell’s mismanagement, there would be no management by him at all!

  65. VaRedsFan

The Bell supporters will never be able to explain this away.

For 5 years, he’s removed an effective reliever (after 6 pitches and 1 out) to put in, e lesser pitcher.

    • Dennis Westrick

Plus, thanks to the Reds FO extending Bell’s contract for 3 more years, we have 2 more years of this managerial malfeasance!

    • DW

Yeah that one is hard to understand.

And I am so unimpressed with Pagan so far this year. Really didn’t like the signing in the first place…bringing a flyball pitcher into GABP just doesn’t make sense to me.

  66. Erik the Red

Hard to win win there are eight automatic outs right now. Irvin is solid however their should be a lot more hits off a guy that throws soft stuff like him.

  67. Jeff Morris

Wilson should have pitched to the Orioles hitter that hit the two run homer, not Pagan. Has to be lefty vs lefty matchup!

  68. Gpod

The day off really helped this reds offense ….good lord it’s ugly

  69. Moon

2 hits through 7. Both by Elly. Jeez, what a pathetic lineup

  70. Mark A Verticchio

This team is fading fast, which many predicted for May. Getting Freidl back will help some but not nearly enough. Krall deserves as much blame as Bell, everybody knew they needed a strong right handed outfield bat and Krall got Candelerio, sad.

    • Erik the Red

The early grades on Krall’s offseason signings and moves is an F after 32 games.

  71. Grover

Hard to see this team going anywhere when there is only 1 above average hitter in the lineup. No McCain, Friedl or Marte is hard to overcome. Can’t believe Candelario is a guy you give a 3 year contract to.

  72. Reddawg2012

As a whole, is this Reds team better than last year’s team? The rotation obviously is, but overall they are just so uninspiring. At bats are not even remotely competitive.

  73. RedsGettingBetter

Even the umpire denied the only walk the Reds would have calling really bad that 3rd strike to Maile

    • VaRedsFan

Molinski is one of the better umps, he missed that one though.

      • VaRedsFan

Which means KChild gets to lead off.
        Unless they use Benson.

  74. DW

I don’t think this is time to panic. The offense will likely break out soon. So many guys are slumping at the same time.

  75. Moon

Bell is using Maile as a Pinch Hitter? Goodness, Maile is like a kid with a blindfold trying to hit a pinata.

    • VaRedsFan

well he did replace the 0-22 Fraley….
      … sooo upgrade?

  76. Mark A Verticchio

When you have to pinch hit Luke Mahle for anybody it shows you how bad things have become. This team will battle the Pirates for 4th place. I just don’t see things getting better. Last year many good young players brought life to an average team in May, this year there is nobody that will help. The best young hitter in the organization is a 19 year old in high A ball, Collier.

  77. RedsGettingBetter

Farmer dominating the top of the order in the 9th. Good outing, he did that Pagan didn’t

  78. Mike W

The balls and strike calls tonight have really irked me, but none more than the last few against Maile. Seriously though, all umps’ balls and strikes accuracy should be evaluated at the All-Star break and the bottom 20% of them should not be allowed behind the plate the rest of the year. They can start fresh (slate wiped clean) the following year.

  79. LDS

Shutout 3 times in last 11 games. Not signing that RH power hitting OF is starting to loom large. Candelario is proving not to be the answer. The best that can be said for tonight is EDLC got a couple of hits off a lefty. Now 0-2 in May and 4.5 out. Not much time to right the ship.

    • Optimist

The 3 shutouts very bad; not signing the power RH bat not looming that much – yet; plenty of time to right the ship; SP likely to regress, RP to remain blah/OK. Swapping some bats (Ford/Capel up, Martini/Bubba down) may help with a jolt, but wear off quickly.

Next month really up to Candelario/CES/TySteve/and then Friedl.

No reason to not give those 4 the next 30 days before considering this unfixable as is.

Still a .500 team, not good, not bad.
