Nick Martinez

The splits for Martinez show us that both lefties and righties are hitting for a high average against him this season. They also show us that neither group has walked against him. The differentiator so far is that lefties have hit the ball out of the park against him twice and righties haven’t. Last year, righties managed a .603 OPS against him. Left-handed hitters had a .747 OPS against him last season.

Yu Darvish

This season the splits have been big for Darvish once you get beyond the fact that lefties and righties have essentially the same average. Right-handed hitters have as many walks as strikeouts. Left-handed hitters aren’t walking much and they are striking out a lot against him. Last season the opposite was true – righties struggled as they posted a .674 OPS against him while lefties put up a .799 OPS against him. Hitters were also better against him from an OPS standpoint in Petco (67 points higher), but his ERA was lower in San Diego despite that.

News and Notes

Elly and “The Throw”

Last night Statcast tracked the throw in the 9th inning from Elly De La Cruz at 106.9 MPH. That would have shattered the record since we started tracking that stuff in 2015. It turns out that it was a miscalculation…. but it may still have been the record. We wrote more about it earlier today.

Maybe that bronchitis is still an issue??
I have chronic lung diseases including bronchitis. Sure don’t want a 90+ heater heading your way and a cough flairs up. Just a thought.

    • SHOW OPS

Might be due to the size of the outfield in SD. I wondered the same thing before recalling that.

  1. Melvin

Not exactly an inspiring lineup tonight. Let’s win anyway. 🙂

  2. LDS

Not necessarily a favorable matchup for the Reds. Maybe Martinez will have a good game, at least better than his last.

  3. dimondfvr

    What’s the latest on Stephenson?

  4. Roger Garrett

No CES/TYLER again.Don’t know what the right thing is to do about the IL but this day to day playing short handed is well not good at all.Fairchild over Fraley against a righty is well not good either.Just not our best lineup for sure.Anybody heard anything other then the day to day.

  5. dimondfvr

Yes, No CES/Tyler. If they rae able to DH it would be a better option than Martini

  6. Old-school

This one doesnt set up well

Fairchild is 1-27 against righties and facing an All star righty

Maybe reds FO and Manager are saying we gave u chances in April

  7. Mark Moore

Well … away we go again into the brink. Not sure how long I’ll last tonight. I pushed it pretty good last night (and still managed to read one chapter). Just want to see us be competitive against these Friars. The win last night helped.

    Almost time to …

    KICK THIS PIG!!!

  8. Mark Moore

Did I see they skipped the helmet and cape after Elly’s blast last night? I saw him with the stick, but not the rest of the getup.

      • Harry Stoner

My fantasy is that they celebrate with a giant pen and write a check to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital after each home run.

Pose and mug all you want while signing it.

    • VaRedsFan

Guys having fun while playing baseball.
      Sure…lets be mad at that.

  9. Indy Red Man

Darvish is pretty mediocre so far, but our lineup is horrible? We just can’t keep all the core guys in the lineup. Maybe 2-1 or 3-2 if Martinez can step up in his old park

  10. Ethan L

Don’t have the best feeling with Martinez on the hill tonight…

  11. RedsGettingBetter

I thought Darvish was on IL for this series….Typical pitcher dominant against the Reds especially facing this weak lineup

  12. Mark Moore

Kinda laid that one in there to Profar 🙁

  13. Mark Moore

Thrall … “and Martinez just muffed it.”

  14. LT

Double play written all over it and Martinez screwed it up. Padres fans are telling and screaming

  15. Mark Moore

Bigger jam than Lodolo worked out of last night. Better back him, boyz. Otherwise, it’s gonna be a LOOOONG night.

  16. RedsGettingBetter

Wow, great bounceback from Martinez to put a 0. Helped by defense..

  17. Grand Salami

Still 0-0 through one despite all the drama

Hopefully Reds get a few bounces and win one ugly.

  18. Mark Moore

Benson pulls off another one to shut down the inning for Martinez.

  19. RedsGettingBetter

The ump has squeezed Martinez a little bit so far

  20. Jim Walker

Not sure what is the most incredible part of the bottom of the 1st. Was is escaping bases loaded with no outs with no runs scoring or doing it on less than 20 pitches despite muffing what looked like a GIDP opportunity.

  21. Mark Moore

So perhaps the 7-hole suits the Candyman? He just lashed that one and poked it to the OF grass.

  22. Mark Moore

Making a little stuff happen. Now for Elly to find his stroke against Darvish.

    • VaRedsFan

He battled in the AB, and at least put in play hard.

  23. RedsGettingBetter

EDLC lost a nice chance to have a lead and put press on Darvish

  24. Mark Moore

Nice job backing him up, Stewie!

  25. Mark Moore

Maybe Espinal gets that if he’s playing 2nd, maybe he doesn’t. it was a tough play no matter what. That’s two “almost” in a row that result in a run against.

      • Jim Walker

It was not a good read and break by India. He initial turn was the wrong way (to his left) which took away any chance he might have had for a play.

  26. Mark Moore

I love to see a guy like Machado get fooled that way 🙂

  27. RedsGettingBetter

I would like a lot the Reds could crush Darvish some day…

  28. Mark Moore

Done commenting tonight, friends. Probably will watch our half of the 5th to see if we can muster something against Darvish.

    Catch you all tomorrow.

  29. Reddawg2012

All these bloop hits for the Padres combined with all the injuries and sicknesses for the Reds. Baseball isn’t fair.

  30. VaRedsFan

Padres reject the rbi groundout to get bases loaded 1 out. (catchers inteference instead)
    Manny 3 run double.
    Back breaker

    • VaRedsFan

Now Steer loses one in the lights.

  31. RedsGettingBetter

Martinez in a really unlucky game

  32. Michael B. Green

Are we about done with the Nick Martinez as a starter thing? ERA over 7 as a SP and in the 1’s as a RP.

    • Tom Diesman

I’m not. He’s been really unlucky tonight.

  33. Mark A Verticchio

This one is over, hope to take the series tomorrow, but the offense is really hurting with all the injuries.

  34. VaRedsFan

Nice oppo stroke by Elly followed by a rope double by Steer.

  35. VaRedsFan

India serves an oppo 2 run single to right.
Nice approach by the last 3 batters.

Now way just gotta hope a miracle happens with batters 5-9

    • Rob

I would suggest that blooper would have been caught by many 2B guys.

  36. LT

Cande has another 2 hit game. Hope his bat stay hot

      • LT

He has no where to go but up. He hit rock bottom

  37. Mauired

Fairchild with home run off a righty!

    • Mauired

His second hit of the year off right handed pitching

  38. VaRedsFan

    Bell just got tossed.
He got his money’s worth. Got fed up with the home plate ump’s bad calls.
He gave a might boot to the batting donuts. That had to hurt.

  39. Reddawg2012

Martini hitting at all is pretty pointless. Martini hitting vs LHP is truly just a waste of everyone’s time

    • VaRedsFan

Ty and CES must be in bad shape, if they cant at least PH there.

    • Mauired

Well his days are numbered. Friedl supposed to start playing in minors this week on rehab.

      • Reddawg2012

Yeah until the next starting position player gets hurt or sick or suspended.

      • greenmtred

Wouldn’t you think that Bubba would be the one to go?

  40. VaRedsFan

Tony Gwynn Jr on Padre color commentary…does a good job.

  41. Mauired

Ouch. Guess we know who’s spot Montas will take on roster.

  42. VaRedsFan

Geez.,,,Wilson takes a comeback liner off the shin at 103.
He tried 1 warmup pitch, and couldn’t stay.

    • Rex

does him coming out without facing 3 batters force a roster move?

      • Mauired

Nope but broken bones do. We’ll see but he couldn’t stay in the game. He might be out for a little bit
