Nick Lodolo

After missing the start of the season, Nick Lodolo has come off of the injured list dealing. In his three starts he’s allowed four runs in 17.0 innings. He’s barely faced lefties this season, but they are 1-8 against him so far this season. Right-handed hitters haven’t been all that successful, either, but they’ve done much better than lefties. In his career, righties have posted an .830 OPS against him, while lefties are down at the .475 mark.

Matt Waldron

One of the few players in all of professional baseball that throws a knuckleball, Matt Waldron brings a 5-pitch arsenal to the table, but his knuckleball sets him apart from just about everyone else. He’s had three good starts this season and two not-so-good starts, but he’s coming off of his longest outing of the year when he allowed one run in Colorado over 6.0 innings.

He’s only pitched in 13 games in his career, but lefties and righties have the exact same OPS against him – .744. They get to that number quite differently, though. Lefties walk a lot more often against him, while righties almost never walk. Right-handed hitters show off plenty of power, while left-handed hitters don’t hit for much power against him.

A winning record with this line up is just not sustainable. Candy has to start hitting and Steer needs to get out of his slump.

  2. Old-school

I try to be balanced and bell does some things good and some things not and lineup construction isnt everything but its not nothing either

Why is Benson hitting leadoff with a K rate of 46% against righties and 39% overall and an obp of .283 but with good power numbers and India is on a heater with obp of .353 and little power hitting 5th?

  3. Jason Franklin

Who is the backup catcher with Stephenson out of the lineup?

    • Doug Gray

Probably Stephenson. They just have no plans to use him unless they absolutely have to.

  4. Mark Moore

I’ll get to see the start of this, but my limit is shortly after 10 EDT. Hoping Lodolo is sharp enough to make up for what is likely some slim run support from the boys tonight.

Either way, about an hour left until we KICK THIS PIG!!!

  5. Harry Stoner

I wonder how Alex Blandino is faring with his knuckleball?

  6. Mark Moore

Have to believe they didn’t find fractures for TySteve or CES (other than the old one). I’d expect to see at least TySteve back this series.

    • Old-school

      Off day thursday

If ces and TS arent playing tomorrow

      No reason to play wednesday

Defining characteristic of this franchise for 5 years . They chronically play with 21 guys when injuries hoping to be a day or 2 turn into 5-7 days

      • Indy Red Man

They were doing that with Dusty. Its crazy. Other teams probably do it too, but not to this extreme

  7. Mauired

Good to see Williamson finally scheduled to pitch again. Although I imagine even when ready to come off rehab he’s going to Louisville until a starter goes down. But it will be great to have a viable option in the minors. Phillips and Richardson have been pretty bad. Of course Williamson surprisingly did better with Reds than Louisville last year.

  8. Old-school

Elly going left center again .

    Tired of david bell apologists

No way any sane person defends will benson with his 46% K rate against righties and 40% overall batting leadoff

    He Ks immediately

Insanity! Leadoff hitters get on base. End of story

    • VaRedsFan

      You forgot 1 thing.
      Bell knows things.
It’s the excuse for all inexcusable things.

  9. Mark Moore

Ooops … left that one up just a bit, Nick. 😮

  10. RedsGettingBetter

    the lead didn’t last….

  11. RedsGettingBetter

Well, 2 FF on the up zone were hit hard by Profar and Machado, fortunately just one cleared the fences…Lodolo should be careful with those kind of pitches tonight

  12. Mark Moore

A little Martini for a nightcap. Now can Candy crush the ball instead of our hopes?

    • Mark Moore

      That works, Candyman.

Now something at least in the air to score Martini, please.

      • Mark Moore

        Just like that!!

Solid bat work and deep enough to move advance both runners.

    • Roger Garrett

You called it Mark and now lets get em in please.

  13. VaRedsFan

Who dat wearing #3…getting a double?

  14. Old-school

Candelario serves a nice double oppage and EsPee nal nice sac fly

    And a balk

No one bet the candy double espinal sac fly and balk for a run

    • LT

Expected the unexpected with the Reds patched up line up 🙂

  15. Mark Moore

Oh my word!!! And advancing to 3rd makes all the difference in the world.

  16. Mark Moore

OK, they may have suckered me in for the 3rd inning by scoring and turning the line-up over.

Now to retire the Friars with no further damage.

  17. Old-school

Maybe indy had the candy double espinal sac fly and balk in a run for a parlay????

    • Mark Moore

World’s weirdest parlay … it would have to pay huge odds.

  18. Daytonnati

I hope Dennis is not watching this.

    • Mark Moore

He’d need a full complement of BP meds to survive it.

  19. Old-school

Lodolo has some nasty stuff but hes all over the place
That was a schizophrenic 2nd inning.

    • Mark Moore

      Good way to describe it.

  20. Mark Moore

Wil for the 2B … maybe that gets him going again.

  21. Matt WI

A+ mound visit. Turned the inning right around. Derek Johnson for the win!

    • Old-school

Adult daughter says the talking too seemed to work

See what nick has going forward

      Good start

  22. Mark Moore

Gonna chase Waldron early at this rate.

  23. RedsGettingBetter

Lodolo’s lack of command against the first two batters increase his number of pitches significantly…

  24. Mark Moore

India with a cue shot on that knuckler.

I need to shut down the commenting for the night … and the game shortly after. Hoping we keep this up and I wake up to a happy box score.

    Night all.

    • Melvin

We’ll see what we can do to take over for you. 😉

  25. VaRedsFan

That was a pure bullet that Elly just uncorked

  26. LT

Lodolo got 3 outs on 3 different pitches: a curve, a fast, and a change. Talking about variety.

    • wkuchad

I was worried about him getting through 5, but looking much better

  27. Mike W

    I love it.
Elly will be up 2nd next inning and it’s only the 5th. Clearly he should bat in the top 3 the rest of the year. Do you hear us Bell?
Can you imagine if Elly gets 5 ABs every game for the rest of the year? Bell gets that right?
That 8 HRs and 18 SBs all in one calendar month stat is amazing. No one else has done that in 125+ years! That’s an incredible display of power and speed.
Bell, do not move a person — who is the only person ever to have ever done this — back to hitting 6th!

  28. Jason T.

Lodolo is filthy! Really settled in nicely.
Love to see this out of him. Fun to watch.

    • Melvin

Considering we weren’t sure if/when he was even going to pitch this year he’s more than awesome. 🙂

      • Jason T.

That’s so true. Didn’t look good to start the season and wondering when/if he’d be healthy.
He’s consistently been good to great to downright amazing.
        Love watching him pitch.

  29. RedsGettingBetter

Lodolo with 10 Ks thru 5 IP of 1-hit run ball. He’s retired 12 in a row since the 2nd inning

  30. Mike W

    Thank you Tampa Bay!
Let’s finish these guys off and gain another game on the Brewers.

  31. Daytonnati

Why does a 92 mph fastball from a Lefty look faster than 92 from a Righty?

    • Mauired

I think Nick’s length helps his stuff.

  32. Reddawg2012

Nick Lodolo is the type of pitcher that you start game 1 in a playoff series and feel great about it. Please, for the love of God, stay healthy.

    • Mauired

He’s looking pretty nasty. When he was hurt in the spring, I was ready to join the throw Lodolo in bullpen. He might be one of the best starters in baseball. In fact I don’t remember the last time Reds had two lefty starters as good as Lodolo and Abbott.

  33. Matt WI

Brilliant outing. One more insurance run won’t hurt.

You want insurance, Espinal got it for you!

      • Matt WI

Insurance premium is up to date. Full coverage. Espinal has quietly been playing well. I like him hiding back there in the lineup.

  34. Jason T.

    Nice 8th inning Cruz.
    Let’s get this W!

  35. Mauired

For those that say lineup does not matter. Benson now tied with Elly for most extra base hits. Two bases empty doubles into the corner. Imagine if he was middle of the order with runners on. That’s another 2-4 runs on the board. And that’s just tonight. Extra base hitters need rbi opportunities. He shouldn’t have been in the nine hole. Shouldn’t be leadoff either. One of these days Bell will get it right.

  36. Harry Stoner

    Why is Espinal batting #8?!

Move him up in the lineup!

    • Matt WI

Nah… kinda nice to have some sneaky talent helping turn the lineup over.

      • Harry Stoner

Was just joking….following the RLN standard lineup critique.

FWIW He does have more rbis than his #8 competitor, Benson.

      • Matt WI

Fair enough! Lot of that logic around for sure!

      • Mauired

Stoner your humor is about as bas as your logic. I just said Benson should be out of leadoff so his team leading extra base hits can drive in more runners. Then you mock me and unintelligently make my point that Benson has the same amount of rbi as the pathetic good for nothing Espinal. Your intelligence is really something special.

You gotta chill out, Mauired. Calling Espinal “pathetic good for nothing” isn’t gonna be tolerated. Questioning Stoner’s intelligence is also not going to be tolerated. I’ll leave this as a warning, but next time you’re going to get a time out from commenting.
-Adding this in the comment to make it more likely you’ll see it

      • Doug Gray

      • Mauired

Hmm logic. Bat your leading extra base hitter behind 3 guys that are never on base. Cadelario .222 obp. Espinal .292 obp. Maile 286 obp

Yeah lots of rbi opportunities there.

      • Harry Stoner

Dude, your touchiness and poor assumptions are as bad as your constant litanies of complaint.

I know it might be hard for you to accept, but sometimes it isn’t about you,

It seems your ego can’t handle that, but I don’t expect much in the way of self reflection.

For a such an opinionated sort, you’re pretty sensitive, aren’t you?

Try to remember: not everything is about you.

      • Mauired

“Was just joking….following the RLN standard lineup critique.

FWIW He does have more rbis than his #8 competitor, Benson.”

What are you talking about? Seems like you took the opportunity to respond to me for no reason but it’s not all about me. More illogical babble. You’re pretty good at that at least.

      • Mauired

Opinionated? I’m on a baseball website. I’m entitled to mine equally as you are. If you don’t like. Move along or come up with an intelligent response if you have any.

      • Mauired

@Doug. Ok. I take back my comments. Espinal is a really good defender. Stoner has alot of quality insightful comments that are much appreciated.

      • Doug Gray

You could just say Espinal is playing poorly right now. And tell Stoner you disagree with him or that you believe he’s wrong.

      • Mauired

Sorry. I try to have a baseball discussion and I get trolled. Just frustrated.

  37. Jason T.

Nice add on run in the top of the 9th.
    Let’s close this one out.

Bring it home- Diaz!!! We want the Win

Its never easy with this crew!

  39. Jason T.

Diaz, my blood pressure rises fast when you pitch.
    Glad we got that W!

  40. Matt WI

Whew. A little sloppy late, but good game. And, props to SD… loud and proud for a Monday. Hope GAPB fills up when school is out.

  41. Mike W

Elly, you know I love you — but why throw that 95 mph to Candy at 1B? Thankfully that didn’t cost us. Great win guys! Good night gents.

    • Doug Gray

Because he had to. Anything less than what he threw and Bogaerts is safe.

  42. Tom Noonan

What was that throw from elly to Candelaria all about near the end. Completely unnecessary to throw it that hard in that case. Caused an error and brought up the potential tuing run.

    Very strange.

    • Matt WI

And Sadek was complementing that he had learned not to over throw based on runner speed early in the game! Kiss of death.

    • Doug Gray

It was absolutely necessary to throw that ball a billion miles per hour. Bogaerts was 6-inches from the bag when the ball hit Canderlario’s glove.

  43. RedsGettingBetter

Great win! They keep rolling .Moved up to 16-13 and two more en SD. Ashcraft looking for winning the series…

    • RedsGettingBetter

I wanted to say Nick Martinez instead of Ashcraft…
